Style Magazine - Readers Choice Awards - Roseville Granite Bay Rocklin 2022

In this month’s issue, our biggest of the year, we’re celebrating the season—along with all our region’s small businesses (and business owners)—in a big way. If you’re like me and read magazines back to front, then start with “Last Look” on page 82 for an autumn-esque picture snapped locally and our favorite leaf-peeping locales, including East Sacramento—an urban forest that’s currently awash in a canopy of yellow, orange, and crimson-colored trees. Leaving the leaves behind, turn to page 68 for some easy, autumn-inspired recipes utilizing the cream of the harvest crop, including a butternut squash risotto you’ll be eager to reheat…and have on repeat. In honor of the most hallowed holiday—the one where consuming colossal amounts of candy and donning creepy costumes is A-OK—we asked area distilleries for their “boo”ziest, most spirited cocktails. Pick your poison (I think I’ll start with the Midori-spiked, freaky-looking “Frankenstein”) on page 72. We also share some fun, festive Halloween happenings in The 10 Spot (page 16) that are sure to (pumpkin) spice up the season. Around here, it wouldn’t be October without our annual “Best of” feature, where we announce the winners of this year’s Readers’ Choice Awards. It’s a personal favorite because I always discover new (literally) winning places around town to support—like Pasty Pies of the World and Exhilaration Station—and am reminded of all the talented, innovative entrepreneurs our region is teeming with. Find out if your favorite people and places made the list starting on page 51. There’s much more in store, too, including an inspiring, informative piece about local women beating breast cancer (page 20); a spotlight on some of the area’s best bands (page 26); and tips on making sure your WFH office is an authentic place of productivity, whether you prefer to work indoors or (like me!) out (page 54). I hope you’ll agree that these glossy print pages are as plentiful and uplifting as the autumn season itself. Enjoy! ——Megan megan@stylemg.com @meggoeggowaffle

BEATING BREAST CANCER
by PAULINE ARROYO | photos by TAYLOR GILLESPIE
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month,
we’re highlighting four women in our
community who have fought and/or continue to
fight the disease. Keep reading to discover their
important stories and words of wisdom.
Tina Macuha
Good Day Sacramento anchor Tina
Macuha was diagnosed in March 2009
with stage 0 breast cancer and had a
double mastectomy that April. Tina has a
family history of the disease including her
grandmother, four cousins, and mother.
“My mom died of breast cancer in the
early ’80s, so I was diligent on getting
mammograms right after she passed
away.” After deciding to share the news
with viewers, the outpouring of love
and support was immediate. “I received
emails from women who said they put
off their mammograms and seeing me
go through this made them schedule
[an] appointment.”
What advice do you have for other
women?
Bring someone with you to your
appointments so they can take notes and
help ask questions. When we're stressed
and overwhelmed with this diagnosis,
we don't hear what the doctor is saying
because we're in fear mode. Always ask
questions and be an advocate for yourself!
What has this journey taught you?
I've learned I can reach out to others for
support and do what it takes to be healthy. I
feel so fortunate to have family and friends
who held me up during a difficult time.
This journey taught me blessings come in
many ways.
Karly Hernandez
Jackson resident Karly Hernandez is a
dedicated wife and loving mother to two
daughters. The month after her brother
passed away, in May 2021, she found a
lump in her left breast. That September she
was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer.
Though she initially experienced hurdles
obtaining insurance coverage and care,
she found a multifaceted approach from
Marshall Medical Center. “Marshall has been
great. They’re very attentive; as a questioner
by nature, they answer all [of mine]. I feel
so blessed to be accepted by them.” Now
cancer-free, Karly continues to undergo
chemotherapy. While in treatment, she
makes sure to visit and get to know all the
other patients in the cancer center.
What advice do you have for other
women?
Listen to your body, listen to your gut,
and pursue it. Mindset is everything.
Although it’s scary, doctors and resources
are there to help you get through it. I am
very thankful for everyone and to God for
pulling me through.
What has this journey taught you?
Appreciate the small moments. I’m
thankful to be here with my babies and
grateful to get to see them grow up…to be
there for first days of school and to read
[them] bedtime stories.
