THE IMPORTANCE OF MUSEUMS: PRESERVING LOCAL CULTURE
Preserving Local Culture
Three Valparaiso art museums work to enrich their communities while
promoting local artists and preserving Northwest Indiana’s culture.
By Katie Bieber
In a world of rampant social media platforms, instant gratification,
and dwindling attention spans, the way we experience art has
dramatically shifted. But to truly understand the magnitude of a
work of art, it must be viewed in person. Visiting a museum or an
art gallery can also be a collective experience, inspiring conversation,
an exchange of ideas, and ultimately, creating community. Valparaiso
is home to both museums and art galleries, which share the important
role of honoring and preserving its local culture.
Showcasing Northwest Indiana’s Talent
The mission of the Pines Village Retirement Communities is to
“celebrate life by enriching the lives of older adults.” As a nonprofit
organization, they commit their funds to enhancing the community and
services for their residents. One way they accomplish this is with art.
It decorates every wall. In 2009, Pines Village underwent a renovation
and at that time, created a space that would be dedicated to art.
“Our residents are supporters of the arts, and we follow their lead,”
said Corporate Relations Director Amy Page.
Since The Village Gallery opened in 2009,
it has showcased original artwork from
local artists, with exhibits changing every
six weeks. Located on the first floor and
professionally organized, it is easily accessible
to all residents and the public, while providing
a great opportunity for artists to showcase
their art. The Village Gallery exhibits include a
“Meet the Artist” reception, where artists can
talk about their work on the Sunday afternoon
that their exhibits open. These are open to all
residents and the public. There are also no
charges for the artist to exhibit, and they can
sell their work commission free.
“It’s a win-win for our residents, and it’s a winwin
for the artists,” Page added.
In addition to The Village Gallery that
regularly rotates current artistic talent, Pines
Village has permanent art collections to
showcase the region’s legacy artists.
Embedded in the history of Pines Village is
the artist Hazel Hannell, a prolific artist and
longtime resident of Porter County. Although
she never lived at Pines Village, she was
a friend to many of its residents. Over the
course of her artistic career, she was a painter,
printmaker, and ceramic designer. She even
designed chintzes, a printed multicolored
cotton fabric, for Marshall Field and Co.
Hannell painted until she died at age 106.
Following her death, Pines Village was the
recipient of 21 never exhibited watercolor
paintings. The Hazel Hannell Collection
was unveiled in 2011. It is displayed in
chronological order, showing how her style
evolved from early in her career until its end.
Her final painting was completed at age 103
with her eyesight fading.
“She is a great example of aging and
creativity that we promote all the time.
The independence, the creativity, the
dreams that people have. They don’t go
away,” reflected Page.
Pines Village is a member of LeadingAge, a
501(c)(3) tax-exempt charitable organization
whose vision is “an America freed from
ageism.” They were so impressed with
Hannell’s exemplification of aging and
creativity that the collection was on exhibit
at their Washington, DC headquarters from
April-June 2012.
As you continue to wind through the
corridors of Pines Village, you will find
yourself surrounded by stunning artwork.
Interspersed between a large variety of artists
and styles are two more collections that
honor notable local artists, Russell Nelson
and Margaret Burroughs.
A resident of Pines Village, Richard Brauer,
who many know as Professor Emeritus of
Art at Valparaiso University and the Director
Emeritus of Valparaiso University’s Brauer
Museum of Art (his namesake), was pleased
Our residents are
supporters of the
arts, and we
follow their lead.
—Amy Page, Corporate Relations Director
Pines Village Retirement Communities
to learn that he could continue his long life in
art at Pines Village.
“They have so much original art. I had an
active life in art before I moved in as a retiree.
I was really pleased that I could continue that
life in art here. I enjoy when there’s a lot of it.
When it changes. Not only in the gallery, but
in the hallways,” said Brauer.
Pines Village residents get more than just
artwork on the walls, they are also offered
painting classes. All the materials are
provided. The only requirement of residents
is to show up.
“My life in art has continued, and I suspect
others have just begun their life in art here, or
at least find it more enriched being here than
staying at home,” Brauer continued.
A somewhat hidden gem, The Village
Gallery at Pines Village is open to the public,
Monday-Friday from 8:30-4:30pm. It expertly
showcases up and coming artistic talent while
preserving the artistic history of Northwest
Indiana. If you are an artist interested in
exhibiting your work, or to view upcoming
Located in the Valparaiso University Center
for the Arts on the campus of Valparaiso
University is the Brauer Museum of Art. It
was named the Brauer Museum of Art in
1996 to honor the collection’s director and
curator, Richard Brauer. Its primary collection
is American art with a focus on Midwestern
regional art, as well as world religious art.
Its more than 5,000 works of art span the
mid-19th century to the present. Within this
permanent collection are prominent works >>
THE IMPORTANCE OF MUSEUMS: PRESERVING LOCAL CULTURE
>> by well-known artists including Frederic
E. Church, Karl Anderson, Georgia O’Keeffe,
Andy Warhol, and Ansel Adams.
Perhaps most significant is that it houses
the largest known collection of works by
Junius R. Sloan. Sloan was part of the first
American landscape style, also known as
the Hudson River School. He was the first
significant dedicated landscape artist in the
Chicago area. Richard Brauer devoted years
of research to Junius Sloan, and because of
his efforts the Brauer Museum now owns the
“collection of record” which includes over
400 paintings, watercolors, photographs,
sketchbooks, letters, and other documents.
Unfortunately, the treasure trove of artwork
in the Brauer Museum of Art has been
affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, with
the museum being closed due to safety
protocols. However, there are plans to reopen
this fall, and the Brauer will do it with a
new Director, Jonathan Canning.
Canning has a wide range of museum
experience. He spent nearly ten years as
the Senior Curator of the Martin D’Arcy, S.J.
Collection at the Loyola University Museum
of Art. He will be joining The Brauer after
serving as the Director of Curatorial Affairs
and Programming at The Hyde Collection,
a small but exceptional private art museum
located in Glens Falls, New York.
...Northwest Indiana
has its own artistic
tradition separate
from Chicago...
to honor and respect.
I’m excited to see...
what the Brauer can
do for the community.
— Jonathan Canning, Director
Brauer Museum of Art
When asked what drew him to Northwest
Indiana and the Brauer Museum, he
responded that he wanted “to get back into
an academic setting where I could have
colleagues across the university to work with
and think with, not just faculty but students,
professional staff, and with people from
outside of the arts,” said Canning.
He is also excited about the Brauer’s location
inside the Center for the Arts Building. The
large glass windows of the shared lobby and
proximity to other art forms have inspired his
vision for future programming.
“Working with another art form is something
I really want to engage with at the Brauer.
With theater, music, dance. It’s a very
powerful way of bringing the community
together and exploring fundamental and
important aspects of the human condition,”
said Canning.
Having spent many years professionally
in Chicago, Canning is looking forward to
reconnecting with its art community. But he’s
more interested in learning about the
contemporary art scene of Northwest Indiana.
“I know Northwest Indiana has its own artistic
tradition separate from Chicago, and I want
to honor and respect that. I’m excited to see
what’s there and understand better its own
artistic traditions in the landscape, the
dunes, and to see what the Brauer can do
for the community.”
There will likely not be a grand re-opening,
but rather a series of rolling events that
coincide with Valparaiso University’s
academic calendar. For those eager to
A “Beyond Beyond”
Experience
There is a sort of Zen reverence you feel when
you step into the newly opened Schiralli Art
Gallery. Located within a beautifully restored
home that was built in 1900, the Gallery
showcases 10-foot ceilings, original in-laid
hardwood floors (handcrafted from trees
grown on the property) and a sense that every
detail has been carefully considered. Perhaps
this is because the opening of this gallery and
its café has been a long-time dream of artist
Rocco (Rocky) Schiralli and his co-owner and
wife, Tammy Rose-Schiralli.
From the beautiful music that effortlessly
floats through each room, to the gorgeous
Murano glasses used to serve imported
artisanal sodas and teas, the space sets
the stage for Rocco’s stunning and
provocative art.
A native of Northwest Indiana, Rocco has a
master’s degree in Psychology, a license in
mental health counseling, and a license in
addictions counseling. In 1998, he began
working at Porter-Starke, and managed the
adolescent addiction program. Over the
course of twenty years, he eventually became
CEO of the organization.
Tammy was born in Chicago but grew up in
Northwest Indiana. With her father originally
from Alabama she recalls making Southern
dishes from scratch at an early age. Her love of cooking continued
throughout her teenage years, working in restaurants in many different
capacities. After switching gears and giving a 9-5 a try, she realized she
preferred serving people more than working for someone else. She
started a catering business and was working out of Nana Clare’s when
the pandemic hit.
The pandemic coincided with Rocco’s retirement, and the two started
looking for property where they could both fulfill and merge their
artistic dreams. Unfortunately, commercial property was impossible to
find. But through connections, and a cold call knock on the front door,
they found their dream location. >>
THE IMPORTANCE OF MUSEUMS: PRESERVING LOCAL CULTURE
>> “Tammy has a very creative, visionary eye
in terms of what something could be. She’s
the optimist of the two of us. It was a cool
house, but it needed a lot of work,”
said Rocco.
The two took on the challenge. They removed
sub floors, shag carpet, and repainted walls.
All the bathrooms were updated, and the
kitchen was completely redone. A new HVAC
system was installed, and the plumbing and
electrical were updated. Despite the changes,
they managed to preserve the home’s original
beauty and charm.
As you tour this historic venue, Rocco’s art
lines the walls, peeks through unexpected
places, and in the artist’s words, bombards
you with “possibilities of meaning.”
Completely self-taught and colorblind,
Schiralli describes his method as “Altered
States of Art, a combination of surrealism
and visionary styles.”
Attached to the gallery is Café Cozy. Tammy’s
daily artistic contribution comes in the form
of simple, fresh ingredients thoughtfully
combined and beautifully plated – true
culinary works of art. With no set menu,
Tammy relies on seasonal ingredients, often
visiting the farmer’s market and harvesting
herbs grown on the property. Everything is
served in-café only, with no options for carryout,
encouraging visitors to be in the present
moment, unplug, and unwind.
When asked why the arts are important
to society, the Schiralli’s both had
poignant responses.
“Because life is beautiful, but sad. The arts
make life more beautiful,” reflected Rocco.
“Food is love. It’s an expression of love,
feeding somebody,” said Tammy.
The Schiralli’s invite you to slow down and
take in the artwork with a glass of wine in
hand. Should you be craving a longer stay,
you can relax and recharge at the RocCozy
Inn. Located on the grounds of the Schiralli
Art Gallery and Café Cozy, this one-bedroom
carriage house offers an extravagant
experience with artistic flair.
Step inside the Schiralli Gallery and Café Cozy
Preserving the Old and
Welcoming the New
From Junius R. Sloan’s sprawling 19th
century landscapes to the politically infused
works of Rocco Schiralli, the museums and
galleries of Valparaiso offer a chance to
reflect, engage, and marvel at the artistic
talents of its local culture.
"The pandemic showed us, across the world,
that the arts are a focal point for expression,
emotional release, mental enrichment. It is
important for humans to be able to create and
invent and release themselves in the presence
of art,” reflected Canning, Director of the
Brauer Museum.
TURNING PASSION FOR ART INTO A DEVELOPED SKILL
Turning Passion
for
Art into a
DEVELOPED SKILL
Art Barn School of Art and Painted Palette Studio provide the
opportunity for anyone to explore their passion for art.
By Katie Bieber
The tell-tale sign you’re an artist is that as a kid you
were always doodling on the little blank space left
after notetaking, or completely filling notebooks with
drawings. For Amy Davis Navardaukas, Executive
Director of Art Barn School of Art, and Nathan Biancardi, owner
of Painted Palette Studio, the art bug bit them at an early age.
Biancardi said, “I couldn’t stop drawing since I was old enough to
crawl,” while Navardaukas described herself as “always artistic as a
kid”. Sometimes, life throws a curve ball and distracts you from your
passion for art. In that case, it’s never too late to revisit your former
love. Whenever the art bug bites you, this is your invitation to explore
your passion.
In Valparaiso, Art Barn School of Art and Painted Palette Studio
invite all ages at any skill level to immerse themselves in art, whether
it’s to improve a skill or learn something new. The Art Barn was
founded by an artist, Jan Sullivan, in 1969 when she began teaching
art on what used to be a 19th century dairy farm. To this day, the
Art Barn follows Jan Sullivan’s vision to be a place of inspiration for
the creative soul and support for the artist within. “Education is at
the core of what we do,” said Navardaukas. The 69-acre school is
located on the northeast side of Valparaiso in Jackson Township and
offers culturally focused classes, workshops, events, programs, and
exhibitions for all ages and all skill levels.
Painted Palette Studio opened in 2019 by Valparaiso’s fine artist and
caricature artist, Nathan Biancardi, where he offers one-on-one art
lessons, in-person or virtually available to adults and youth, creates
art himself, as well as hosts parties, events, and workshops. This
year, he became the All About Art camp director when the former
founders decided to retire. Biancardi looks forward to continuing to
honor their legacy.
Valparaiso Creative Spaces Fill the Need
for Artistic Outlets
Create, create, create is the beating drum for art, but where do you
go when the passion for art outgrows the space? Schools supply
art rooms, but what about after school or even out of school? Some
artists, like Nathan Biancardi, fill their home with art. “I have huge
painting albums,” he said. “That was why he had to move. I didn’t
know where to put all his stuff,” his mother, Carole Biancardi, joked.
After graduating in 2018 from Valparaiso University with a bachelor’s
degree in fine arts, his parents gifted him a “happy graduation” art
studio in the old Valparaiso Technical Institute building on the west
side of Valparaiso. The move provided Nathan Biancardi the “privacy
to do whatever [he] wanted” and to “explore artistically.”
10 VALPARAISO MAGAZINE | FALL 2022

Even if they’re
working at the same
skill level they were
before, taking a class
gives people a reason
to come in and make
art every week.
— Amy Davis Navardaukas
Art Barn School of Art
Navardaukas shared a similar
story where there wasn’t
enough space to create. After
she pursued her passion
for art at Purdue University
and received a liberal arts
degree with a concentration
in fine art, she soon realized
that the large format work
she was doing couldn’t be
maintained in her tiny home
studio. “After I graduated I
couldn’t sustain working that
large because I didn’t have
access to the campus’s studio
spaces anymore,” commented
Navardaukas.
In addition to outgrowing a
studio, one also must think
about the equipment required
to create art. If a person wants
to do ceramics, you’ll need a
place to wedge your clay, a
wheel to throw, a surface to
work on, a kiln to fire, not to
mention the messy process
and all the dust produced.
“You almost need to have a
dedicated space just for art and
a lot of people don’t,” added
Navardaukas. That’s where
Art Barn School of Art and
Painted Palette come in. The art
schools provide the Valparaiso
community with classes, events,
workshops, camps, and exhibits
to satisfy the hunger for art.
“Most people are looking for
some way to build their skills
or to try something new,” said
Navardaukas. So, how does one
do such a thing?
Trying Something
New: The Discovery
Phase
There are numerous avenues
you can take to make art, from
the material you create with to
the style you gravitate towards.
The goal in the discovery >>
ValpoChamber.org 11

TURNING PASSION FOR ART INTO A DEVELOPED SKILL
>> phase is to try each
direction until you find what
you love because it’s all
individual-based. Art can be
created through a large variety
of mediums, from acrylics,
watercolor, and oil paints to
ceramics, mixed-media collage,
and scarf dying. With that said,
Art Barn and Painted Palette
Studio give their students
“experiences with art materials
that they may not normally
have had experience with in
school,” stated Navardaukas.
“A lot of the supplies we have,
our students have never heard
of before,” said Biancardi’s
mother, Carole.
It’s all about finding what
you like by how it feels to
you. Each media will feel
different. Biancardi chooses
oil painting as his favorite even
though he is a well-known
caricature artist because he
likes the way it feels: “smooth”,
“finer, “classier”. “It feels like
a real painter is creating on
the canvas,” Biancardi said.
By comparison, “molding
something with your hands is a
whole different experience than
trying to express something
on a page or on a canvas,”
said Navardaukas. Art classes
allow the students to try many
different forms of media to find
a particular medium that sparks
their creativity.
Taking an art class also exposes
the students to assorted styles
and artists. “It’s nice to be able
to have different instructors that
teach in different ways,” said
Navardaukas. Although only
Biancardi teaches at Painted
Palette Studio, he brings
famous artists like Vincent van
Gogh, Frida Kahlo, and Andy
Warhol into his classroom. This
exposure helps the students
find their own style of art, just
as Biancardi did. “I like to go
from one style to another. It
is not enough to be realist or
abstract. I need a little bit of
both,” said Biancardi.
Sharpening the Saw:
The Various Ways to
Make Progress
Vincent van Gogh once said,
“As practice makes perfect,
The students gain
confidence that
they can learn a
new skill, be selfexpressive,
and
then also take what
they’ve learned
here and explore
at home.
I cannot but make progress;
each drawing one makes,
each study one paints, is a
step forward.” Art Barn and
Painted Palette Studio help
their students simply focus
on progress rather than
unattainable perfection. One
piece at a time. A student can
choose to solely work on one
piece until they are pleased
with the outcome or create a
new piece every day. It is about
doing art over and over again
to “sharpen that saw and keep
that flicker of creativity alive,”
commented Navardaukas.
“Even if they’re working at
the same skill level they were
before, taking a class gives
people a reason to come in
and make art every week,” said
Navardaukas.
Staying consistent and
practicing is what van Gogh
said, making progress.
Doing so, the students gain
confidence as well. “Art is
a confidence builder,” said
Biancardi. Every week, he
watches his students’ progress.
“We had one student come
in and draw a little tiny donut
on a piece of notebook paper.
Then, after a few months, he
was drawing on large sheets
of paper, painting on bigger
canvas,” Biancardi proudly
stated. “The students gain
confidence that they can learn
a new skill, be self-expressive,
and then also take what they’ve
learned here and explore at
home,” continued Biancardi.
“The ability to create gives a
person self-esteem,” added
Carole. It goes both ways.
Teachers too can learn from
their students. For Biancardi,
teaching helps him “focus and
remember certain principles of
art.” “It’s like reeducating while
also trying to educate them,”
Biancardi commented.
Art Is More than a
Skill, It Is a Passion
Once the art bug bites,
the artist inside awakens.
Sometimes it’s early in life,
and sometimes it’s a little
later. No matter where you
are, though, Art Barn and
Painted Palette Studio are
there to give you a space to
let your artist out and explore
various forms of art, gain
confidence in your own ability
to create, and hone your craft.
So, sign up for that class and
embrace the artist within.
BUILDING COMMUNITY, ONE THEATER AT A TIME >>
Lisa Formosa-Parmigiano,
Chicago Street Theatre
Building
Community,
One Theater at a Time
The challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic created the opportunity for
the leaders of three Northwest Indiana performing arts venues the
opportunity to reflect, refocus and come back stronger than ever.
By Katie Bieber
Community theater has historically
been a place where people from
all occupations and backgrounds
can come together for a shared
experience. Community theaters provide
a safe haven for thought, expression,
and dialogue.
Perhaps this is why many leaders at local
community theaters have all gone from
helpful volunteers to torchbearers in their
organizations. Their love for the art form,
and connecting with their communities, has
contributed to their unwavering passion to
keep their theaters alive.
The Unique Experience of
Live Art
Upon entering the Chicago Street Theatre,
a mural vividly illustrates its storied
history. What first started as an amateur
drama company in 1955 is now known to
Valparaiso as the Chicago Street Theatre.
After spending over four decades in
residence at the Memorial Opera House, the
organization purchased the Chicago Street
Theatre in 1997.
“There is so much to be said for pride of
ownership. Having a home that is yours. It
just changed the dynamic,” said Sheri Nash-
Braun, Business Manager and Marketing
Specialist, and member of the group for
over 50 years. >>
ValpoChamber.org 17

BUILDING COMMUNITY, ONE THEATER AT A TIME
>> In 2008 the theater underwent major
renovations which included its lobby,
auditorium, and bathrooms. This was also
the year that Lisa Formosa-Parmigiano was
hired as Director of Education. Under her
tutelage, the Chicago Street Theatre School
grew like wildfire. A donation enabled the
remodeling of an upstairs classroom, now
known as the Edith B. Wood Studio. This
small stage accommodates class showcases
and smaller, more intimate productions.
Unfortunately, perhaps more than any
industry, live theater took a hit during the
COVID-19 pandemic. Although they were
able to keep their educational programs
going via Zoom and with careful sanitation
procedures in place, getting volunteers
and a steady audience to return has been a
challenge.
“I think so many people take it for granted
that we’re going to be here, and it’ll be okay.
Not just we, as in this small building, but
also the arts in general. A lot has happened
behind the scenes over these past two
years,” said Formosa-Parmigiano, Artistic
Director and Director of Education.
With their doors forced closed, Chicago
Street Theatre took the opportunity to
update the lobby. This cozy space now has
a full coffee bar and comfortable seating,
inviting their audiences to come for an
experience, rather than just a show.
“We have come out of this stronger and
smarter. Continuing Chicago Street and the
roots of where we came from allowed us
to survive and we’re going to continue that
and grow. It’s not accidental. We’re here to
stay and here to listen and collaborate,” said
Formosa-Parmigiano.
A big part of their continued success
has been their foundation of dedicated
volunteers. A wall of the lobby is
emblazoned with the names of every
volunteer that has donated their time or
talent over the years. They are always
looking for people to join them in making
outstanding art, from ushering to directing
a play or musical.
“I believe in ensemble, and I’ve always
tried to teach it. So, my heart and soul will
be here at Chicago Street,” concluded
Formosa-Parmigiano.
Everybody has
the opportunity to
participate... We
meet everybody
with open doors
and open arms.
That’s who we are.
— Scot MacDonald
Memorial Opera House
An Institution Founded
on the Importance of
Community
Following the end of the civil war, members
of the Grand Army of the Republic wanted
to honor their hometown. Instead of having
a monument erected in their honor, they
persuaded the Indiana General Assembly to
change state law and used the $1,000 given
to the county toward building the Memorial
Opera House.
“It’s a great community gathering space,
and we know what this building represents
to the community. The Grand Army of the
Republic met upstairs, in what is currently
our lounge, in 1893. Their descendants, who
are now the Sons of the Union Veterans of
the Civil War, are continuing to meet here.
So that history has carried through the
buildings almost 130-year history,” said Scot
PJ MacDonald, Executive Director.
MacDonald started as a volunteer in 2006.
Over the years, his passion for the arts,
his career in banking, and his love of the
building and its rich history led him to his
current position of Executive Director.
When asked about how the pandemic
affected the Memorial Opera House,
MacDonald responded, “The last two years
have been incredibly challenging, but also
incredibly rewarding. We were able to delve
into what this building needs to survive
another 130 years.”
MacDonald hopes to preserve the living
memorial and cultural landmark with much
needed renovations and additions all while
“maintaining the dignity and the beauty
of the building.” While hopes for a bigger
footprint are still in the works, the Memorial
Opera House will continue to expand their
programming. In the spring of 2023, a
program called The Penguin Project will
be offered. This is a unique production,
as all the roles of a modified version
of a Broadway musical are performed
by young artists with developmental
disabilities. They are joined onstage with
peer mentors.
“It helps raise compassionate and
concerned citizens that we want to be
running our businesses and our government
in the future. So, it’s a big investment
in our students of all levels, and it’s a
big community lift because there’s no
registration fees for the students at all,”
18 VALPARAISO MAGAZINE | FALL 2022

said MacDonald. Accessibility
and audiences finding a home
in this historic building is
MacDonald’s rallying cry.
“Everybody has the opportunity
to participate. We want to
make sure that it’s accessible
to everybody at every level. We
meet everybody with open doors
and open arms. That’s who we
are,” said MacDonald.
Award-Winning Theater
in Northwest Indiana
There are some unspoken rules
when in the theater. For example,
What was once a taxidermy museum, and then a truck repair shop,
is now an intimate 50-seat theater that they proudly own. A member
of the Northwest Indiana Excellence in Theatre Foundation (NIETF)
since 2002, they have received over 204 nominations and 70 awards
for excellence in all aspects of theatrical production. This allvolunteer
community theater offers a diverse range of productions
from the classics to large-scale musicals, to their beloved 10-minute
play festival. The festival first debuted with six 10-minute plays that
were donated by a local playwright. However, it has grown to be of
international interest.
“After we saw how well it was received by actors, directors, and
audience members, we opened it up to the world to submit scripts
for consideration. We had to cap the number of plays that we will
accept because one year we got well over 400. We stopped counting
at that point,” said Heid.
Like all live theaters, the pandemic was a challenging time for 4th
Steet Theater. Because of their all-volunteer staff, they did not
qualify for federal grant money. After putting out a newspaper
article detailing their struggle, donations from the community came
pouring in.
Heid is looking forward to what future programming might look like
at 4th Street Theater. She hopes that they will soon be able to offer
a sensory friendly show, one that appeals to parents with special
needs children, audience members who may be epileptic, or who
may be overwhelmed by loud noises.
For those who have not visited the theater, Heid encourages them to
consider attending a show that they are not familiar with.
“There’s this temptation to only see shows that we know a lot about.
There are some shows where I was first told the concept and I
thought I would hate it. I am often surprised by the shows I end up
liking,” reflected Heid.
4th Street Theater is always looking for more volunteers, and Heid
suggests that you reach out when audition notices are posted.
Whether you’re interested in building sets, or volunteering for just a
couple of hours at a time, there is an opportunity for everyone from
the community to help keep this Chesterton treasure running.
Angela Heid
4th Street Theater
you don’t whistle, never mention Macbeth, and you always leave the
ghost light on. But Angela Heid, Board President of the 4th Street
Theater in Chesterton has something else to add to the list.
The first time Heid visited 4th Street Theater, she was carrying a
couple lights they needed as well as a wealth of knowledge about
lighting and sound. “I said the most dangerous words you can say in
the theater. ‘Do you need help?’” Heid joked.
A Communal Experience
Although their struggles and triumphs may be different, all three
performing houses agreed that the arts build community by
teaching empathy, compassion, and expression.
“If we can’t express ourselves, and through that develop compassion
for what others are expressing, then what is there? Whether that’s
an experience that makes you laugh until you spew your coffee or
an experience that makes you cry tears of understanding, that’s
the human experience. I’d like to get back to a place where even
if we disagree, we can have discourse and dialog. And I think
art can do that,” concluded Lisa Formosa-Parmigiano of Chicago
Street Theatre.
VALPO CHAMBER
Debra Silvert, flutist, and Paul Bowman, classical guitarist, had
a vision to entice new listeners into concert halls back in 1988.
For six seasons, they toured, premiering new American works
for flute and classical guitar in concert halls and music festivals
across the United States, Asia, and Europe. After a 21-year hiatus,
they picked up where they left off and set roots in Northwest
Indiana, drawing larger, more diverse audiences. Now, Duo
Sequenza performs live and virtual concerts and has worked
on recording projects, such as their second album and a crystal
flute album.
In 2016 the book was published,
Playing the Lead
for
Over 60 Years
Since 1955, the Community Theatre Guild
has moved Valparaiso to laughter and tears,
while providing opportunities for actors
of all ages to hone their craft.
By Kelleen Cullison and Chris Hough
Thanks to diligent efforts by community organizations and leaders over the years, Valparaiso
is widely regarded as one of the key cultural destinations in Northwest Indiana. In any given
month, the city is host to farmer’s markets, multicultural festivals, marathons, live music, and
local food events. And throughout the year, theatrical performances are held, indoors and
out. Those who attend are enjoying the labor of a long-established theatre community in
Valparaiso by the Community Theatre Guild (CTG), which has been working since 1955 to
provide spectators and actors of Northwest Indiana the opportunity to engage in theatre.
It all started in spring of 1955, when a performance of “The Little Dog Laughed” by a PTA
group was a surprising success, prompting the formation of the Little Theatre Group, soon
renamed the Community Theatre Guild in 1957. Tryouts followed in June at the
Memorial Opera House for “Papa is All,” which actors performed in August
despite the gigantic fans required to keep the auditorium hospitable (fans
which nearly blew the set down!) The CTG
performed almost exclusively at the Memorial
Opera House, with building and group
developing a symbiotic relationship. The
Memorial Opera House served as host and
home for the Guild, and the Guild took
responsibility for maintaining the building,
overseeing renovations and fundraising for
new equipment and furniture.
In 1981, the group participated in the
Indiana Community Theatre League. Best
Actress was awarded to the CTG’s Mary
Beth Wiese for her role in “Vanities.” A
decade later, the group won the League’s
annual competition with their production
of “The Boys Next Door,” sending them
International Festival, where they won once again.
From “Death Takes a Holiday” in 1955, to “Will Rogers
Follies'' in December 1995, the guild performed out
of the Memorial Opera House. But in 1997, a shift in
circumstances led the Community Theatre Guild to select
a new base of operations. Other groups now oversee the
repairs of the Memorial Opera House and perform on
that stage. In 1998, the CTG, after a series of shows on
unexpected yet innovative stages, finally took up residence
in the renovated Assembly of God church, known to us
today as the Chicago Street Theatre, where they’ve been
ever since.
In the Chicago Street Theatre, the Guild has nurtured
generations of local actors through classes and
performance opportunities. In 1996 they created the “Kid’s
CTG,” making theatre in Valparaiso accessible to all ages.
They maintain a community presence with annual events
like the children’s play, One Night Jam sessions, and the
ever-popular Shakespeare in the Park, as well as regular
shows such as the upcoming performance of Stephen
King’s Misery this coming October.
Culture is what elevates a city to a community, and the
CTG has done the important work of bringing that culture
within everyone’s reach. Their achievements over the past
60+ years are critical components of the work that has
been done across the city to make Valparaiso the cultural
destination that it is today.
Art & Culture
Thrive
THROUGH VALPARAISO
CREATIVE COUNCIL ENDEAVORS
By Valparaiso Creative Council
Art, culture, unique opportunities, these are all things people
look for when choosing a city in which to live. It is the mission of
the Valparaiso Creative Council (VCC) to help promote, develop
and advocate for and with local art efforts in order to ensure our
city is full of diverse art in all forms and readily available for our
community to enjoy.
The VCC feels communities thrive when people come together
to create, explore and celebrate art, culture and innovation.
We were formed following numerous workshops and panels
to envision the future of Valparaiso. The ValpoNEXT Citywide
Vision Plan was developed with a broad range of strategies
generated by hundreds of participating community members.
Among the action steps to pursue over the coming decades is
the creation of a Creative District, and the VCC was formed to
oversee these plans.
“This plan was developed because our community said art
matters,” VCC Board Vice-President Megan Marolf said, “and
over the past few years the plan has evolved and taken new
shapes, which we are very excited about. The Creative District
is a goal which is decades out; however, we keep that original
vision alive within our community through our projects and
collaborations.”
We have been involved in several community projects in
partnership with the City of Valparaiso, Valparaiso Community
Schools and other local businesses. While the City of Valparaiso
supports our efforts, we are a separate non-profit with 501(3)
status and fundraise to ensure we can continue to support local
art ventures.
Recent projects and initiatives have included the Community
Paint Party, Birds of Paradise Scavenger Hunt, City Council Mural
Project, Cumberland Art Walk and most recently a collaboration
with Country Inn & Suites to showcase local artists.
“We have many plans for the next five years to move the mission
forward. It has been great to establish relationships with local
business owners and local legislators who support community
art initiatives. This ensures art and our rich culture stay an
integral part of the community,” VCC Board President Stephanie
Swearington shared.
Through our work with local organizations we continue to ensure
art reaches children and adults of all abilities. Our efforts to
provide access to art for those who may otherwise not have the
resources has provided great partnerships with Porter Starke
Services and Opportunity Enterprises.
In August, The VCC hosted our first event fundraiser, from
which a portion of the proceeds will go toward art installations in
the Valparaiso Parks Department’s new skate park. We continue
to raise funds to be used toward the art in the park, with the
goal of raising $15,000 by Christmas. For more information on
how to donate to our current fundraiser please visit us at www.
valpocreates.org or email info@valpocreates.org.
The Valparaiso Creative Council has many projects in the works around the Valparaiso
community and is looking forward to another active year in 2023.
