anis Salon & Day Spa, with its roots tracing back 

38 years to the vision of founder Chris Valavanis, 

has undergone a transformative journey under 

new ownership. Originally established in Munster, 

Indiana, Vanis Salon & Day Spa expanded to three 

locations: Valparaiso, Crown Point, and Schererville. 

What set Valavanis’ salons apart was his passion for 

providing robust educational opportunities, including 

an apprenticeship program to train new stylists. 20 years 

ago, one of those apprentices was Colleen Kaper, who spent 

her career as a hairdresser alongside Valavanis. “Chris built 

his business on education. He was super passionate about 

continuing that education to stay current and keep up on all the 

latest trends,” said Kaper. 

It seems fitting that when Valavanis was ready to fully retire, he 

would sell to someone who knew what the iconic brand was all 

about. Two years ago, Kaper and her husband Brent bought the 

Valparaiso location. In 2023, they acquired the Crown Point and 

Schererville locations. Kaper reflected on Valavanis’ management 

style. “Chris was such a great businessman. He developed strong 

management teams in all of his salons, so when I took over it 

was an easy transition. Somedays I feel like I need to be in three 

places at one time, but there is really strong leadership in each 

salon.” Kaper manages all three locations while also providing

A VISION FOR GROWTH 

As the salon evolved over the years, it has embraced more 

spa services, including popular treatments like eyelash 

extensions, lamination, and lash lifts. Kaper hopes to 

continue to expand these services in the future. Both the 

Valparaiso and Schererville locations are a salon and full 

spa, offering their clients an opportunity to disconnect 

and indulge in self-care. “Our goal is to make people feel 

relaxed and beautiful while they’re here. We’re not a fastpaced 

salon. When someone comes here, they’re here for 

two hours or three hours, and sometimes it’s their only time 

to relax. Clients really value that,” said Kaper. 

Vanis’ impact on the Valparaiso community is palpable, 

offering a haven for individuals during life's significant 

moments, from weddings to the milestones of raising 

families. “I’ve given kids their first haircuts, and now I’m 

seeing them graduate from college. We get to be a part 

of a lot of good and bad days for people. That is the 

most heartwarming, helping clients get through those 

moments,” reflected Kaper. 

Vanis Salon & Day Spa is more than just a beauty 

destination. It is a retreat for self-care, wellness, and 

community. The salon's legacy, built on education and 

meaningful client relationships, promises a future filled with

A LIFELONG PASSION FOR EDUCATION 

Knight’s journey from elementary school teacher to wellness coach 

to Owner and Area Developer of Valparaiso’s Prime IV Hydration and 

Wellness has a common thread: education for herself and others. 

Initially, though, it was a serious health condition that led Knight to 

research and teach herself about alternatives to traditional medicine. 

“I had these food allergies that were very hard to detect and were 

not being addressed by any sort of traditional medication,” Knight 

said. By experimenting and educating herself about potential 

allergens, Knight discovered how to eliminate problematic foods 

from her diet and heal herself. 

Her passion for continuing education led her to explore IV therapy, 

and as it wasn’t available locally, she found herself traveling to 

Chicago to experience the treatment. 

Knight credits a little self-analysis with the realization that she 

needed to bring IV therapy to the Valparaiso community. “It was 

something I realized driving home after an IV appointment in 

Chicago, and I said to myself ‘It feels good to finally feel good.’” 

WATER IS EVERY CELL’S PRIMARY NUTRIENT 

Our bodies need nutrients, just like a car needs gas. However, up 

to 92% of the U.S. population is either chronically dehydrated or 

vitamin deficient. In educating herself about her own health, Knight 

learned what it truly means to fuel her body with IV therapy. 

“When you give your body the right nutrients, whether it be through 

food, supplementation, or other methods, your body has significant 

power to heal itself,” said Knight.

What we eat and drink is filtered, broken down, and excreted

credentials and experience to make every 

client feel comfortable before they even 

walk through the door. Every one of her 

medical team members are registered 

nurses – ER, labor and delivery, outpatient 

surgery nurses – with at least four 

years of experience. 

At each visit, every client, new or 

returning, will have a consultation where 

one of Prime IV’s registered nurses will ask 

about their goals and health history. Then, 

a custom-made drip is created just for their 

specific needs. Once a personalized IV is made, 

clients enjoy a one-hour vacation in their state-of-theart 

head-to-toe massage chair while their body receives the 

nutrients needed to look, feel, and perform their best. 

WHO SHOULD GET IV HYDRATION THERAPY? 

“We say, ‘There’s a drip for that’, meaning we have a drip for 

almost any goal you’re trying to achieve or ailment you’re 

trying to ease,” said Knight.

After about three sessions, when Knight asked how she felt, she said,

SALT CAVE EXPERIENCE 


It all started with a stubborn, stuffy nose. 

Kim Franklin, owner of Evexia Salt Cave 

in Chesterton, was visiting a friend in 

Naperville, Illinois. With an hour to kill 

before her dinner date, she decided to 

pop into a nearby salt cave. Kim felt the 

effects immediately and now reflects on 

the transformative experience. “It was like 

someone turned a faucet on my nose. It 

broke up everything and I felt so good. So, 

I started to go to any salt cave that I could 

find.” Over the next two years, Franklin 

spent all her free time researching salt 

caves, either by visiting them in person or 

reading about the centuries-old practice of 

breathing dry, salty air. 

Salt Therapy, or Halotherapy, has been 

recognized for its therapeutic effects by 

many cultures, including ancient Egyptians, 

Romans, and Greeks. However, Polish 

physician Felix Boczkowski first discovered 

its more current form. He observed that salt 

miners had healthy respiratory systems 

and glowing skin, unlike miners in other 

industries. Boczkowski attributed these 

positive benefits to the micro-sized salt 

particles the miners would breathe in daily 

while chiseling and hammering. In response, 

Boczkowski founded Poland's first health 

resort facility in 1839. Over the many years 

since, Halotherapy has continued to evolve 

and more innovative methods of delivering 

halotherapy have been developed. 

BUILDING AN ACTIVE SALT CAVE 

The more Franklin learned about this 

holistic medicine, the more she wanted 

to share her knowledge and passion with 

her local community. After some deep 

consideration, she chose to leave her HR 

career behind and open an active salt cave 

in Chesterton. She hired a Polish company 

to build an authentic, 440-square-foot 

salt cave, composed of 20,000 pounds 

of pink Himalayan salt, imported directly 

from the Himalayan mountains in Pakistan. 

What makes Evexia an active salt cave is 

the Halogenerator that has been installed, 

which grinds and crushes 99.99% pure 

grade sodium chloride (salt) into microsized 

particles that are dispersed into 

the air of the salt cave. 


Calming music, aesthetic lighting, and 

comfortable seating make the cave 

both mesmerizing and inviting. A 

glance up at the ceiling reveals 

a night sky, encouraging 

those participating in 

the dry salt therapy to 

sink a little deeper 

into their seats, take 

a deep breath, and 

relax. The dry salt 

aerosol helps address 

respiratory concerns, 

inflammation, skin 

conditions, and fatigue. 

Although many clients 

spend time in the salt cave to 

address physical ailments, others 

come for the added mental health 

benefit. Franklin has programmed events 

inside the salt cave including yoga, meditation, 

hypnosis, and singing bowl sound therapy. 

AN ACTIVE SALT CAVE 

FOR EVERYONE 

When asked how her wellness services impact the 

lives of her customers, Franklin responded with a big 

smile. “We like to get involved in the community and 

we go above and beyond so everybody can experience 

how wonderful this place is,” said Franklin. She then went 

on to describe her passion for making sure the space is 

accommodating for everyone. Nursing homes bring residents 

in wheelchairs. A local child psychiatrist has used the space to 

treat clients who are sensory sensitive. “It’s so good for children, 

especially if a child has any type of skin allergies like eczema or 

psoriasis. We put some toys in there for them to play for a half hour 

or 45 minutes, depending on their age. We’ve had a lot of great 

feedback with that,” reflected Franklin.

Franklin went on to describe what 

almost sounded like medical 

breakthroughs. A woman with 

a horrible ear infection on 

three antibiotics felt her ear 

loosen and could hear again. 

A mechanic who couldn’t 

open his hand for almost two 

years exited his session in 

tears while flexing his hand. 

“When I hear stories like that 

from my customers, I just know 

I’m supposed to be here,” said 

Franklin warmly. 

EXPANDING SERVICES 

FOR FUTURE GROWTH 

What started with just a salt cave has now 

grown into a one-stop wellness shop in Chesterton, 

Indiana. In addition to dry salt therapy, Evexia offers services like 

Ionic foot detox, full-spectrum infrared sauna, energy therapy, 

and a large variety of spa services including massage, facials, 

and Ecofin hand or foot wax treatments. More recently, they have 

added dermaplaning, electrolysis, eyebrow and eyelash tinting and 

eyelash curling to their list of services. Both individuals and groups 

are encouraged to take advantage of the full range of services, like 

bridal parties or businesses that want to offer their employees a 

corporate wellness day. 

Franklin concluded the interview with a call to action. “I don’t 

think the average person realizes that you have to take time 

for yourself. You have to schedule it in. If you don’t take care of 

yourself, who else is going to do it?” If you’re curious about salt

Wednesdays and Happy Hour Fridays. What was once only 

available in the salt caves of Poland can now be experienced 

right here in northwest Indiana.

ver the course of 30+ years as a registered nurse in the 

ICU, Linda Gaddis, Owner of Sanctuary Skincare and 

Wellness Spa, saw a pattern that sparked a passion. 

People would be in critical care, desperate for their 

good health to return, but everything ran a specific 

course. Someone who was diabetic would come back 

in five years to have hypertension and diabetes. Another 

five to seven years later, their kidneys would start to fail, 

and neuropathy would settle in. 

“I noticed how it was a predictable downward spiral, and I began to 

wonder, why do we keep doing the same thing over and over again, what 

other things are out there,” said Gaddis. 

That’s when her passion for preventative care and 

functional medicine took root. “Everybody has their 

passion, this just happens to be mine,” commented 

Gaddis, while glancing at the medical journal she was 

eager to finish later. 

A PASSION FOR PREVENTION LEADS TO 

THE BIRTH OF A MEDICAL SPA 

Caring for and then seeing her mother pass from a 

terminal illness was the final push Gaddis needed to 

open a medical spa dedicated to preventative care. 

With ten years in the industry, Sanctuary Skincare 

and Wellness Spa has evolved from one laser hair 

removal machine to a variety of treatment plans to a 

comprehensive and aesthetics program. Joined by her 


daughter, Anna Allman, the medical spa located at 

502 Wall Street in Valparaiso offers an extensive menu 

filled with a wide range of skincare treatments and 

alternative medicines. 

“In the end, if you have a health or aesthetic concern, 

it’s best to come to us,” added Gaddis. 

TREAT THE PATIENT RATHER 

THAN THE DISEASE 

Gaddis focuses on wellness through homeopathy, 

a study of medicine using minute concentrations of 

natural elements from plants, animals, or minerals to 

create FDA approved medications. 

“Using a homeopathic approach to medicine, we 

don’t treat the disease; we treat the patient who has 

the disease,” said Gaddis. What this means is one 

determines which homeopathic medication will be 

most effective by the patient’s response, not the illness 

or the symptom. 

For clarity, let's use a real-life example. Gaddis had a 

client who had a rash around her mouth. To treat the 

symptom, she was put on steroids, but the rash kept 

coming back. For three years, her primary doctor, 

dermatologist, surgeon, even the Mayo Clinic could not 

figure it out. Gaddis dug into her health history, asked 

why the rash was only around her mouth, and why the 

steroids only worked for a little while. She discovered 

the client was allergic to her toothpaste. Once she 

stopped using that toothpaste, the rash disappeared.

Lindsay Munden, DNP, APRN, FNP- 

BC, began her career as a registered 

nurse working in pediatrics 

at Franciscan in Crown 

Point. While continuing her education at 

Valparaiso University to become a nurse 

practitioner, she shadowed a plastic 

surgeon who would frequent her pediatric 

unit. She would eventually end up working 

at his private practice for two years, where 

she learned how to do cosmetic injectable 

treatments, like Botox and fillers. During 

that time, she completed her doctorate 

at Valparaiso University. Munden was 

quickly recruited to teach at VU and has 

served as Professor of Nursing in the Nurse 

Practitioner program for the past 9 years. 

A seasoned member of the American 

Association of Nurse Practitioners and 

the International Society of Plastic and 

Aesthetic Nurses, Munden has not only 

excelled in her professional background but 

has also ventured into the entrepreneurial 

realm. Her passion for safe and evidencebased 

care led to the creation of the Lindsay 

Munden Aesthetic Beauty Lounge.

Over the last 8 years, Munden has provided

Mind Salon and Spa in Crown Point. “It gave 

me great exposure to build up my clientele,” 

said Munden. However, after her family 

relocated to Valparaiso, Munden decided 

it was time for her own brick-and-mortar 

space. Nestled just off Highway 30, the 

lounge is cozy and gorgeously designed. 

Blending the essence of a medical center 

with the tranquility of a day spa, it embodies 

the unique fusion that defines a medical 

spa experience. 

Munden offers a wide range of nonsurgical 

enhancements that cater to 

diverse aesthetic needs. From anti-aging 

solutions and laser treatments to addressing 

hyperpigmentation and promoting collagen 

stimulation, the services are a testament 

to her dedication to holistic care. Munden 

describes an initial aesthetic consultation. 

“Our goal is to enhance patients’ natural 

beauty, but it’s still medicine. So we collect 


a medical history, then do a facial assessment. 

We focus on what the patient is trying to 

improve or enhance, and we come up with a 

treatment plan together.”

said Munden. 

Munden went on to describe how she

like pain management. “Patients come 

in and have spent thousands of dollars on 

oral appliances for their teeth grinding and 

TMJ with no relief. To be able to treat them 

with Botox and have them call me the next day 

and say their pain's a zero for the first time in a year. 

That's been really fulfilling too, 

to help people that have more of a medical need than cosmetic,” 

reflected Munden. 

Appointments with Munden are never less than 30 minutes, 

proof of her unwavering commitment to quality patient care and 

satisfaction. Once the patient leaves, they are often not without 

Munden’s personal cell phone number. “They know they can call 

us for anything. They send me pictures or videos of them making 

expressions to show me their results. I love waking up to those 

messages, it’s very gratifying,” said Munden with a warm smile. 

This personalized approach reflects Munden's genuine concern 

for her patients, fostering a lasting connection that transcends the 

boundaries of a typical medical interaction.

As she looks toward the future, Munden is dedicated to staying 

abreast of emerging trends and advancements in

Personal care businesses have been a fixture in downtown 

Valparaiso since before the turn of the 20th century.

he beauty business, believe it or not, 

began with men. 

Decades before beauty salons, workingclass 

men, who lacked the disposable 

income to own a personal shaving kit, 

relied on visits to their barber multiple 

times a week for a shave or a trim. In 

1890 alone, there were a half dozen 

barbers set up in the basements of main 

street office buildings and businesses. 

Beauty salons, alternatively, didn’t start 

appearing until after the First World 

War, when perms and bobs replaced 

long hair in popularity, and specific 

tools became necessary to achieve 

modern styles. Unlike barbers, who 

had business locations, women ran 

their beauty salons inside their homes 

and via appointments. You were far 

more likely to find a beauty salon 

listed in the phone book than a 

barbershop, which ran 

on newspaper adverts, 

walk-ins, and a wellestablished 

clientele. 

Some women bucked 

this at-home-salon trend. 

In 1927, Evelyn Schlundt 

and Helen Baker became 

available for hair styling 

at the Doyle and Breed 

^

Barber Shop in the Elks building. They were 

the first two women hair stylists advertised 

in Valparaiso. 

Lowenstine’s Department Store began 

offering permanent presses that same year. 

For decades they provided high-end hair care 

on 57 South Franklin Street. They were known 

for having cutting-edge equipment to meet 

changing styles. The salon remained open 

until Lowenstine’s closed its doors in 1988. 

An infamous 1996 fire destroyed the building 

just as plans were underway to begin to fill the 

massive space once again. 

Lowenstine’s was the main commercial hair 

salon until Harvey’s Dime Store opened its 

salon in October of 1964. Harvey’s offered 

a wide variety of services and goods; they 

started offering yarn the same year the 

salon opened. They remained a competitor 

to Lowenstine’s until the dime store’s closure 

in 1987. 

Despite the success of Lowenstine’s and 

Harvey’s salon departments, small, private 

salons and barber shops remained a 

consistent presence. College Barber and John 

G. Marks were listed at 9 Washington in 1929. 

There was Hill’s at 56 Jefferson in 1938. Smart 

Set could be found at 51 South Michigan in 

1965, and Faires’ and White’s Beauty Cottage 

at 63 Lincolnway in 1966. In 1969, Harry 

Athens, once the youngest barber in the area, 

retired after over 41 years in 

business as a barber in downtown 

Valparaiso. One of the many 

changes he noted over his tenure 

was an increase in the price of 

haircuts from $0.50 to $2.50 by 

the time of his retirement.
