FROM THE
EDITOR
The night game in CoMo was almost a disaster, but
our men in Red and Black came through with the W …
now they must hit Sanford with an eye for the Tigers
VANCE LEAVY
EDITOR IN CHIEF
Well, Georgia fans I’m sure you
are feeling like I am right about
now … dazed and elated. It
was an old-fashion donnybrook in CoMo, where the midwest
Tigers came to play from the opening whistle. But fortunately, our
Bulldogs fought together to dodge a major bullet bringing home
the agonizing 26-22 victory over Mizzou.
Whoa, that game was something I won’t soon forgot.
As Coach Smart alluded to in his immediate interview following
the game, when you go on the road in the Southeastern
Conference victories don’t always come easily. That was most
certainly the case this past weekend. However, the good news is
that this 2022 Georgia team heads into October still unbeaten.
Next up … the Tigers (Auburn) from just across the state line,
who like Missouri face our Bulldogs after smarting from a tough
loss (to LSU) the week before. Much has been talked about
surrounding all the turmoil on the Plains. However, I firmly believe
beleaguered head coach Bryan Harsin will have his cats ready
come 3:30 p.m. on Saturday in Sanford Stadium.
With that being said, coupled with Georgia’s not-so-great
performances the last two Saturdays, I felt this cover of BI had to
strike a realistic cord, so all the photos (on the cover) were taken
by BI’s Greg Poole after the win in Missouri. The faces of Coach
Smart, Stetson Bennett, Nolan Smith, Brock Bowers and Sedrick
Van Pran are as real as you can get. There is definitely concern in
their eyes, however each also possesses resolve, which should
make you feel good as a Georgia fan.
The message is simple this Saturday … eye for the Tigers and
use the recent struggles as a launching point to return to the
standard of football expected at the University of Georgia.
As Jeff Dantzler delves into with his column (page 12), the
history of the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry is rich, to say the
least. And while our Dawgs have been dominant in the series
most recently, the Tigers have history on their sides for dashing
Georgia’s desire for dream seasons.
Don’t kid yourself, Auburn will definitely arrive to Sanford
Stadium and give our men in Red and Black their best punch.
While fans’ wants for their team have nothing to do with the
outcome of a game, they can help their team by standing
behind them on game day. With that being said, it is absolutely
imperative that Sanford is bonkers when toe meets leather
on Saturday. There is no doubt that Missouri’s fan support
contributed to the game in CoMo being so exhausting.
Again, “Eye for the Tigers” on Saturday.
This issue of BI (all 72 pages) definitely matches what is going to
be a humdinger of weekend in Athens. I’m pretty sure everyone I
know from all parts is converging on the Classic City. It’s going to
be a blast, but as already stated our fans and team must do their
part so the good time lasts the entire weekend.
Beyond our normal sports coverage, Hamilton Culpepper is
back in this issue (page 64) with an excellent interview with Knox
Culpepper. You have to love Knox’ humility and my goodness I
totally forgot that he notched 51 tackles in back-to-back games
versus Auburn (25) and the Jackets (26) in 1983. That is insane.
Enjoy catching up with this Damn Good Dawg.
On the social front, I must first give BI photo intern, Carter
Horne, kudos for manning the Bulldawg Illustrated fan photos
camera at the Missouri game (pages 30-38). Carter, BI student
writer Coby Serina and BI Mr. Everything, Greg Poole, drove all
the way to Columbia and back. That alone deserves praise, but
throw-in the game being at night and these guys have earned
some extra Dawg Bones. Thanks fellas, great articles and images
and you made it back safely!
Also, something special in this issue, is our recognition of the
UGA Alumni Association’s 40 Under 40 Class of 2022 (pages
39-50). I think you will agree with me that seeing where some of
Georgia’s finest have landed in their careers is fascinating.
This issue’s Georgia Girls features Sarah Bennett (page 28, 29)
of Monroe. Anyone who knows Sarah will attest to her fun and
genuine demeanor. Her answers certainly prove that. And what a
great memory that John Bell (Widespread Panic front-man) sung
the national anthem at Foley Field the day Panic in the Streets
occurred in downtown. You gotta love Panic and the Dawgs.
St. Simons Island pharmacist and business owner, Tommy Bryan
mans our Proust Q&A spot (page 54) in this issue. Always one
for a good laugh, Tommy nails it when blending marriage, duck
hunting, golfing and the Dawgs with his answers throughout.
And since Athens is going to be off the charts this weekend,
enjoy Alexa Stevenson’s Guide 2 Athens (page 52) feature, which
is full of neat recommendations from food to culture.
Finally, Loran Smith is back in this issue with not one, but two
offerings.
For our Bulldogs of the 4th Estates series, Loran profiles Amy
Robach (page 53). Despite Amy’s meteoric career in television
broadcasting, she remains grounded by her family and a love for our
University. It’s no wonder so many Americans adore watching her.
Loran’s sports column is a must read on page 62 for any Dawg
fans who are feeling angst about this 2022 Bulldogs team. The
sledding in the SEC is never easy, but it’s a lot more pleasant to
learn from a tough earned W, than a devastating loss.
With that being said, I’m out of here. Enjoy these 72 pages of
Bulldog love and now it’s time … eye for the Tigers. See you in
Sanford, Go Dawgs!!
Georgia’s almost two decades of success over Auburn has
shifted the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry series, however history
shows the Tigers’ knack for hurting Dawgs’ special seasons
JEFF DANTZLER
@jeffdantzlerTV
The Georgia Bulldogs are basking
in the midst of the lengthiest run
of glory in program history. Under
the watch of native son Kirby
Smart, the top-ranked reigning national
champions are one of the undisputed
kings of college football.
There have been many other magnificent
stretches for the Bulldogs: 1941-42, 1945-
1946, 1948. There are the Southeastern
Conference titles of 1966 and 1968. Cast
forever in Georgia lore, the Red and Black’s
Golden Era of 1980 through 1983, with
the 1980 national championship, three
straight SEC crowns, four consecutive
top five finishes and a cumulative 43-4-1
record. Georgia finished in the top ten
for four straight seasons from 2002-2005,
and then was ranked No. 2 in 2007. This
is a first though, the five successive top
ten finishes and five consecutive major
bowls. The chrishindo, the 2021 national
championship.
Growing up in the 1980s - I was eight
for the 1980 national championship and
didn’t really know any different, and then
crestfallen and heartbroken after Pitt and
Penn State - those glory days and the
heroes of so many unforgettable victores
will forever hold a special place in my
heart and memories. It’s a high the Bulldog
faithful had been chasing ever since.
The national championship of 1980
started the magical run through the early
‘80s. The national championship of 2021
was the fifth of five straight sensational
seasons. Now the Bulldogs of 2022 try
to extend this unprecedented run of
greatness in Athens and make their own
mark.
So close so many times between 1980
and 2021. Now here we are again.
En route to the mountaintop of college
football, the Bulldogs have amassed an
impressive record against the program’s
longtime, historic rivals. Perhaps most
notably, against Auburn.
Since 2006, Georgia is 14-3 against
the Tigers, including a 7-0 mark against
Auburn at Sanford Stadium.
During the middle and second half of
the 1980s, this is something that would be
hard to visualize and imagine.
In one of the most important games
in Sanford Stadium history, a top four
national battle, 8-1 Auburn beat 8-0-1
Georgia 13-7 in 1983. That heartbreaker
cost the Bulldogs a fourth straight SEC
championship and shot at the national
title. It also joined losses to Auburn in 1942
and 1971 as some of the most costly in
Georgia history.
From 1983-1990, Auburn went 7-1
against the Bulldogs, with Georgia’s win
famously coming between the hoses
at Jordan-Hare Stadium 20-16 in 1986.
Auburn’s campus is just across the state
line, and the Tigers have always hit the
Peach State hard on the recruiting trail.
A lot of Auburn players from Georgia
have dealt a plethora of punishment
to the home state school. Especially in
Athens. For years and years, this series was
controlled by the road team. Auburn was
particularly dominant at Sanford Stadium.
From 1977-2001, the Tigers went 11-2
against Georgia in Athens.
When the Tigers pulled off a fourth down
final minute comeback - not the last time
that would happen - to deal the Dogs a
heartbreaking 31-30 loss Between the
Hedges in 2005, Auburn led the all-time
series 53-48-8.
Now the Bulldogs lead the series 62-56-8,
and Georgia aims for an eighth straight
victory at Sanford Stadium over Auburn
dating back to the mesmerizing Blackout
triumph of 2007. Under Smart’s watch, the
Bulldogs are 6-1 against Auburn, and that
includes one of Georgia’s biggest wins
ever. It was a victory that would ignite the
Georgia program back into the elite.
In 2017, Smart’s second season, Georgia
had an 11-1 regular season. The lone
loss came at Auburn by a big number,
40-17. Georgia entered that game ranked
No. 1. The Bulldogs came back and beat
Kentucky and the Yellow Jackets. Auburn
beat Alabama, which had moved to No.
1 and the two would rematch in the SEC
Championship Game. The conference
crown and College Football Playoff berth
were on the line.
Georgia fell behind 7-0 at Mercedes
Benz Stadium in Atlanta, but the Bulldogs
would come storming back. Roquan Smith
spearheaded the defensive performance
and Georgia’s offense got clicking. The
Bulldogs won 28-7 to clinch the program’s
first SEC title since 2005 and earn one of
those four coveted playoff spots.
It was the Bulldogs most significant
victory since the aforementioned early
80s.
That 2017 SEC Championship Game
triumph over the Tigers sits on the Mount
Rushmore of Georgia victories in the
Kirby Smart era. The others would be, and
surely there’s not too much debate here,
the 33-18 National Championship Game
victory over Alabama on 1/10/22, the 34-
11 Orange Bowl College Football Playoff
Semifinal win over Michigan that earned
the berth in the big game in Indianapolis
for the 2021 title, and the New Year’s Day
Rose Bowl College Football Playoff 54-48
overtime victory over Oklahoma that
vaulted the Bulldogs into the big game for
the 2017 crown. If you wanted to go one
for the thumb - a lot of lists are preferred
to have five or ten - the 20-19 thriller that
the Bulldogs pulled out to beat Notre
Dame in 2017 was a launching point for
Kirby’s Canines.
It’s well known that in the grand annals
of Georgia-Auburn, these two foes have
ruined special seasons for the opposition,
with the aforementioned numerous
upsets on the road. The Tigers will try
to do that again on Saturday, to make
some new history. While the Bulldogs will
attempt to continue this impressive and
unprecedented string of success in the
It’s the 127th renewal of the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry,
as Georgia hosts the Auburn Tigers Saturday afternoon at
Sanford Stadium.
The reigning national champion Bulldogs are coming off
a thrilling 26-22 come-from-behind victory over Missouri in
Columbia, which improved Georgia to 5-0 on the season and
2-0 in Southeastern Conference play. The Tigers were hungry
for an upset and led until the closing minutes. Georgia trailed
13-0 in the first half, 16-6 at intermission and 22-12 in the
fourth quarter. But the Bulldogs scored two fourth quarter
touchdowns and then ran out the clock to avoid what would
have been college football’s biggest upset of the season.
Auburn lost to LSU at Jordan-Hare Stadium, as the Bengal
Tigers from Baton Rouge came back from a 14-0 deficit. The
week prior, Auburn edged Mizzou 17-14 in overtime on the
Plains. Heading to Athens with a record of 3-2 and 1-1 in the
SEC, underdog Auburn aims for the upset in Athens.
These two schools got it all started in the deep south in
Atlanta’s Piedmont Park in 1892. In the years, decades and
centuries to follow, the ancient foes have squared off in a
slew of classic gridiron battles that have epitomized the
glory, pageantry and heartbreak of SEC football.
For decades, this rivalry has been filled with underdog
victories and road team triumphs. Auburn would love to
conjure up those echos. Since 2006 though, Georgia has
gotten the better of Auburn, with the Bulldogs winning 14 of
the last 17 meetings with the Tigers.
For the Dogs to continue that success against the Tigers
and reach the midpoint of the regular season with an
unblemished record, there are some areas where Georgia
must improve to get back to peak performance. Over the
last two weeks, in a 39-22 victory over Kent State and the
four-point win at Mizzou, Georgia turned the football over a
total of five times. The Bulldogs are minus - four in turnover
differential in the last two games. Georgia had no turnovers
in the first three games of the campaign, victories over
Oregon, Samford and South Carolina by a combined score of
130-10.
Red Zone productivity is another area where Georgia is
striving for better production - as in score more touchdowns.
Georgia’s first four scores in CoMo were field goals. But, the
Bulldogs were two for their last two in Columbia, with those
fourth quarter TDs making the difference.
In this era of “what have you done for me (not lately, but)
today,” in the SEC, where the wins are so hard to come by,
every victory is so precious. And every player for these old
foes will try and make their mark and slice of history in one
of college football’s best rivalries.
BULLDOGS TO WATCH
BY: CLAY WATKINS
KIRBY SMART (HC) - Coach Smart, in his seventh season as head
coach of the Bulldogs, has built a program which is the envy of every
program in the country. Off to a 5-0 start, the Dawgs are looking to
use the next few games against seemingly inferior opponents to gear
up for a difficult late season slate of games against Florida, Tennessee,
Mississippi State, and Kentucky. Smart never overlooks an opponent
and knows that anything can happen in a rivalry game. Smart’s teams
are never unprepared and will have the Dawgs highly motivated for a
late afternoon kick against the Tigers.
STETSON BENNETT
AND KIRBY SMART
STETSON BENNETT (QB #13) - Stetson, for the second straight
week, did not pass for a touchdown. However, against Missouri, he
completed 24 out of 43 passes for 312 yards. When it counted, Stetson
led Georgia’s offense on a game winning driving while spreading the
ball around to different receivers, tight ends, and backs. Stetson will
be looking for a more consistent performance against Auburn. Getting
back a healthy AD Mitchell will certainly help.
BROCK BOWERS (TE #19) - What else can be said about Bowers?
He is the Bulldogs most consistent running and receiving threat, as well
as a selfless blocker. Bowers led Georgia in receiving against Missouri
with five catches for 66 yards. While Bowers did not find the endzone
against Missouri, he did have a key reception on Georgia’s gamewinning
drive that set the Dawgs up with a first and goal from the
one-yard line. Bowers will again be used in all manner of ways against
Auburn.
KENDALL MILTON (RB #2) - After a long run, Milton had an
uncharacteristic fumble against Missouri. He ended the game with a
respectable seven carries for 63 yards, which equates to nine yards a
carry. Milton is Georgia’s most physical running back. The Dawgs are
eager to find a more consistent running game, and Milton will get his
share of carries against the Tigers.
JAMON DUMAS-JOHNSON
LINEBACKER
AD MITCHELL (WR #5) - AD, like Jalen Carter, has missed significant
time the last few games. AD is a do-everything wide receiver that
keeps defenses honest with his play-making prowess. A return to
full-time duty is expected against Auburn. The Dawgs could use a few
more playmakers on offense to take some of the pressure off Bennett
and Bowers. The Dawgs’ running game has been a bit pedestrian and
adding a dynamic receiver to Georgia’s potent offense may be the
recipe for success against Auburn.
BY JEFF DANTZLER
When Georgia defeated Auburn 24-13 in 1981, the
victory clinched the SEC championship, marking the
first time in program history that the Bulldogs won
consecutive league titles.
In 1990, led by All-American Alec Kessler, Georgia
clinched the outright SEC Basketball Championship
with a victory over Auburn on the Plains in the final
game of the regular season.
One of the most significant victories in Georgia
history came against Auburn in 1959, as the last
minute 14-13 triumph engineered by Fran Tarkenton,
propelled the Dogs to the SEC title.
BULLDAWGILLUSTRATED 16 ISSUE EIGHT • AUBURN

JAMON DUMAS-JOHNSON (LB #10) - Jamon “Pop”
Dumas-Johnson is a tackling machine and the leader of
the Dawgs’ defense. The Dawgs’ defensive line is not quite
as stout as last year’s line, and Dumas-Johnson is relied
upon to clean things up on the second level. A team
leader in sacks and tackles, look for Dumas-Johnson to
track Auburn running bank Tank Bigsby all game long.
CHRIS SMITH (S #29 ) - NFL scouts love Chris Smith’s
intelligence, toughness, and ball-hawking ability.
With the departure of Lewis Cine to the NFL, Smith is
considered one of the Dawgs’ most valuable players and
the quarterback of the defense. Smith will be roaming all
over the field against Auburn and looking to add to his
interception total.
CHRIS SMITH
SAFETY
NOLAN SMITH (LB #4) - The heart and soul of the
Georgia team must play a critical role in helping the
Dawgs recover to form against Auburn. The senior is tied
with Jamon Dumas-Johnson for sacks this season and has
been the most impactful player affecting the quarterback
fromm a pass rushing standpoint. Nolan is an extremely
impressive run stopper, which will be necessary to limit
Tank Bigsby’s success.
TIGERS TO WATCH
BY: COBY SERINA
ROBBY ASHFORD (QB #9) - Having transferred from Oregon
and now being back in his home state, third-year Robby Ashford saw
his first real taste of meaningful playing time against Auburn’s loss to
Penn State after T.J. Finley suffered a shoulder injury to his throwing
arm. Ashford has since started the past two games, but we’ll see how
Auburn deals with Finley’s injury. If Ashford does start come gameday,
just know he runs almost as much as he throws.
BRYAN HARSIN
HEAD COACH
PHOTO BY: TODD VAN EMST/AU ATHLETICS
TANK BIGSBY (RB #4) - The Georgia native has done well for
himself since choosing to take his talents to Auburn. Easily one of
the most talented backs in the conference, Tank Bigsby boasts an
incredibly strong lower half that allows him to keep the legs churning
through tackles and break free for big gains. He loves the stiff arm
move and isn’t shy to use it to shoving defenders to the ground and
out of his way.
JA’VARRIUS JOHNSON (WR #6) - Ja’Varrius Johnson leads
the Tigers in receiving and for good reason. So far this season, he’s
averaging 19 yards per reception. He’s Auburn’s go-to for explosive
plays. Last week against LSU, Johnson got open for a 53 yard
touchdown reception. When he’s on the field, Georgia will need to
have multiple eyes on No. 6..
LINEBACKER
PHOTO BY: TODD VAN EMST/AU ATHLETICS
CAM RILEY (LB #13) - This junior linebacker is finally assuming a
legitimate role on this team, and you can see it in his numbers. In
Auburn’s first game of the season against Mercer, Cam Riley put up
15 total tackles besting his season total last year of 14. His size at the
position is legitimately different. At 6-5, 230-pound, Auburn may
match him up against Georgia tight end Darnell Washington in hopes
of negating Washington’s size advantage.
DERICK HALL (LB #29) - Derick Hall can be seen deployed on the
line of scrimmage playing EDGE more often than not. It’s hard to put
a label on this guy. Hall is a bigger guy at the position weighing in
at around 260 pounds. He’s a bully in the trenches and relies on his
strength more than anything to make plays. It’s definitely working for
him this season as he leads the team in sacks.
BRYAN HARSIN (HC) - Let’s face it. Harsin is on the hot seat. The
offseason drama, the loss against Penn State and the losing in general
may have him out the door before this season even comes to an end.
If Harsin wants to increase his chances of staying, he has to at least be
competitive against Georgia. There’ll be a lot riding on this game for
Harson.
BY JEFF DANTZLER
One of the top sluggers in Major League Baseball
history, Auburn alum Frank Thomas, The Big Hurt, hit
521 career home runs and was twice the American
Auburn’s greatest basketball player Charles Barkley,
a member of the Hall of Fame and highly popular
commentator, was an 11 time NBA All-Star and the
league’s 1993 Most Valuable Player.
Led by halfbacks Bo Jackson and Lionel “Little Train”
James, Auburn won the 1983 SEC Championship and
then defeated Michigan 13-7 in the Sugar Bowl to
finish No. 3 nationally.
CAME UP BIG WHEN
NEEDED!
BY JEFF DANTZLER
FIVE KEYS
FOR A DAWGS VICTORY
CORRAL THOSE TBS - Through the years, Auburn has had a bunch of outstanding
running backs. The Tigers have two more in junior Tank Bigsby and sophomore Jarquez
1Hunter. These guys can pound it and pound it, and both have the breakaway capabilities
to hit the home run on a low risk play. You have to keep an eye on Bigsby and Hunter as
receivers. Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart talks about that “eye discipline,” and that goes double
for this Auburn running back duo.
2
WALL OFF HALL - As usual, the Tigers defense is chock-full of big time players who
are strong and who can run. Derick Hall is at the top of the list. While the Bulldogs Jalen
Carter and Alabama’s Will Anderson were the consensus top returning defenders and
NFL Draft prospects when gauging defensive fronts around the league, Hall is right there in
the conversation. He makes quarterbacks uncomfortable, racks up sacks and tackles for loss.
Quick and standing 6’3, 256-pound, Hall is a load to block. He also has terrific ball skills, on
display with a huge pick and return in Auburn’s win over Missouri.
CRANK IT DOWNFIELD - Georgia’s downfield passing game must be on point
again. In the Bulldogs last two victories over the Tigers, Georgia’s downfield strikes have
3been essential. In 2020, Stetson Bennett IV found George Pickens and Kearis Jackson.
Last season, the game-breaker was a 60-yard scoring strike deep down the middle of the field
from Bennett to Ladd McConkey. The big play, deep ball gave the Bulldogs a 24-3 lead in a
34-10 victory.
WATCH THE FAKE - Special Teams and turnovers are obvious. It’s a no-brainer in
every game every week - the quickest path to an upset, especially if there’s a turnover
4in the kicking game. Stealing a possession or extending a possession can turn a game.
Auburn comes in as the underdog, and the Tigers just may have something up their sleeves
with reverses, flea flickers, halfback passes and especially trickiness in the kicking game. The
Bulldogs must be en guarde.
5
GUYS BE GUYS - Big games like this one, the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry, are broken
down extensively. There are so many factors that ultimately determine who wins and
who loses, but at the top of the list, it’s the best players playing big in the biggest
games. And in this rivalry, from Fran Tarkenton to Herschel Walker to David Greene to Thomas
Davis to Roquan Smith, when the Bulldogs have beaten the Tigers, Georgia’s great players
have been at their best in these legacy games.
FOOTBALL
THE DAWG BONES
GEORGIA VS AUBURN
BY CLAY WATKINS
DAWG BONES OFFENSE: GEORGIA
Georgia’s offense has cemented itself as one of the better units,
not only in the SEC, but in the country. With AD Mitchell and Arian
Smith returning from injury, the Dawgs are returning their fastest
wide receiver and their best pass catcher on the perimeter. Todd
Monken, who is one of the top play callers in college football, will
certainly be able to open up the playbook even more than he
already has. Auburn, on the other hand, has struggled significantly
on the offensive side of the football. They have used multiple
quarterbacks in TJ Finley and Robby Ashford, and besides an
impressive back in Georgia native Tank Bigsby, the Tigers do not
have many weapons to overcome an underperforming QB room.
DAWG BONES DEFENSE: GEORGIA
Georgia has reloaded on defense and has been playing an
impressive number of wildly talented, young players on a defense
that substitutes throughout the game. Malaki Starts and Mykel
Williams have earned starting roles, while true freshman like Bear
Alexander, Jalon Walker and Daylen Everette are pushing for more
playing time. Jalen Carter has yet to play while 100-percent healthy,
and All-American Kelee Ringo has somewhat flown under the
radar despite shutting down every receiver he has faced this year.
The bottom line is that Georgia has one of the best defenses in the
nation, while Auburn’s defense has struggled, especially at home
against Penn State.
DAWG BONES SPECIAL TEAMS: GEORGIA
The Dawgs have one of the best kickers in the land with Jack
Podlesny. He has a very legitimate shot to finish his career with the
highest field goal percentage in Georgia history. Anders Carlson is a
very consistent kicker for the Tigers and one of the better ones in the
SEC. I’m giving Jack the edge here, as he has had more opportunities
to kick this year and has made a higher percentage of his kicks.
DAWG BONES COACHING: GEORGIA
Kirby Smart is a man of many mottos, a master motivator, and a
proven developer of players. He has a national championship ring
and continues to prove why his Georgia Bulldogs are the new
standard for college football success. Brian Harsin seems to have a
clock ticking on his coaching tenure as his time on the Plains has
been a flat-out disaster through just over a year. Auburn paid Gus
Malzahn a large sum of money to leave Auburn and they may be
looking to do the same with Harsin. Coach Smart has said that this
particular coaching staff has the most cohesion of any staff yet
during his time at Georgia. The same cannot be said of the Auburn
staff given the job security issues that continue to swirl.
DAWG BONES OVERALL: GEORGIA
As one can assume, Georgia is better than Auburn in every phase
of the game. This matchup is set to be played in Athens, where
Georgia will look to use their talent advantage on offense, defense,
and special teams to make a statement against one of their
archrivals. Georgia would love to demonstrate once again why they
are worthy of a No. 1 ranking. Stetson Bennett and company should
be capable of doing just that.
A VIEW FROM ...
Auburn
WHAT DOES AUBURN NEED TO DO
TO BEAT GEORGIA?
Find a way to run the football. The backfield
tandem of Tank Bigsby and Jarquez Hunter are
formidable. Have to find a way with a revamped
offensive line to make some holes.
WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON THE
BULLDOGS?
Just as good as last year, maybe better
offensively.
LET’S TALK SEC, WHAT DO YOU SEE
AS THE FUTURE OF THE LEAGUE IN
TERMS OF SCHEDULE SET-UP?
Missouri made its first ever trip to Jordan-Hare
Stadium last month, 12 years into being in the
SEC. Whether it’s a modified division, no division
or pods, the league has to find a way to schedule
equitably, in every sport.
WOULD YOU RATHER SEE MORE
GAMES AGAINST ALL THE TEAMS
IN THE LEAGUE OR THE ANNUAL
PRESERVATION OF CLASSIC
RIVALRIES?
It seems like it has to be one or the other if we
play nine.
I’m not sure there is a unicorn solution for this.
It may take a sacrifice of a long time rivalry. It
also may take adding another SEC game to the
schedule.
OF THE THREE TOP AUBURN TEAMS
OF THE 2000S … 2004, 2010, 2013,
WHICH IS YOUR FAVORITE? WHICH IS
THE BEST?
2004 is one of my favorite Auburn teams I’ve
covered in any sport. It became the example of the
need to establish a playoff. We’ll never, again, see an
undefeated SEC Champion, denied an opportunity
to play for the national championship. That team
had every aspect needed to win a title, experience
and leadership on both sides of the ball. It’s a
shame that the polls were manipulated that season
to deny Auburn a chance.
YOU ARE AN OUTSTANDING
ANNOUNCER, OUT OF FOOTBALL,
BASKETBALL AND BASEBALL, WHAT
DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT EACH?
I always say the season that I’m calling and it’s
the truth. Football is a spectacle and the biggest
challenge to call, for me. I’ve called basketball
longer than any sport. I played baseball and
probably understand the game the most. It’s a
privilege for me to work at any SEC venue calling
Auburn football, men’s basketball, women’s
basketball, baseball and soccer.
TO SEE IN COLLEGE ATHLETICS, OR
WOULD YOU LIKE TO HIT THE PAUSE
TWO GREAT STORES FOR ALL
YOUR BULLDOG NEEDS
DESCRIBE ATHENS IN FIVE WORDS
OR LESS: Creative, comfortable, quirky.
RESTAURANTS AND BARS: Heirloom,
National, Seabear, The Grit.
SHOPS: I love any shop that supports
the many amazing local creators who
live here … Community is your onestop
shop for all things local.
ATHENS/CAMPUS LANDMARK: I
have always been fascinated by the
tree that owns itself.
MEMORY WHILE IN SCHOOL: Many of
my best memories of my college years
are music related. John Bell singing the
national anthem at Foley Field before
Panic in the Streets comes to mind.
4.
PROFESSOR/CLASS: Neuropsychology.
I just couldn’t believe that I could buy a
sheep’s brain at the bookstore to dissect.
for women. Love everything from their
jewelry to their clothes!
FASHION DESIGNER: Sara Blakely, for
obvious reasons! (2)
INTERIOR DESIGNER: Monica Stewart-The
Misfit House. (3)
CHEF: Sean Brock.
HISTORICAL FIGURE: Dorothea Dix.
QUOTE:
GAMEDAY RITUAL/PLAN: If we are
lucky, friends stop by the farm on the
way in or out of town for a visit! When
we head in, it’s Kidds tailgate until
kickoff…or maybe a little longer.
TAILGATE RECIPE: (4)
I love a good “cowboy caviar” so many
variations, but this one is a good start
… serve with tortilla chips or Fritos!
2 cans black eyed peas, drained
1 15 oz. can black beans, drained
2 cups corn, fresh or frozen
1 cup diced red onion
1 green bell pepper, diced
1 red bell pepper, diced
1 jalapeno, seeded and chopped
5 garlic cloves, minced
1/4 cup cilantro, minced
Bulldawg Illustrated continues its series, featuring long-time UGA personalities of the Fourth Estate. There are many who are published authors along with
network television superstars. Our fifth installment spotlights Grady alumna Amy Robach, who despite her TV fame remains grounded being a mother, while
remaining one of the best in the business.
Most mornings, even with an early rising routine, I, at some
point, monitor the news and features of “Good Morning
America,” mainly because of the sprightly contributions of
Amy Robach, a distinguished University of Georgia graduate.
Versatile and introspective, Amy began producing news for the Grady
College of Journalism when she was a precocious student who sensed
that the real-life studio out there was a far cry from the campus—except
for one thing. One professor, actually.
David Hazinski knew what it would be like for his students if they were
fortunate to make it in the television world. It was cutthroat, it was dog
eat dog and it was demanding and unrelenting.
None of that fazed her. She enjoyed the hassle and the unforgiving
atmosphere which hovered over her each day as she produced news
stories which were far from a diet of pablum, even in a collegiate learning
environment. Such as interviewing the father of a student who had come to
her dorm to gather her belongings after the daughter had committed suicide.
Her route to preeminence had her doing news in small markets
followed by a stint at WTTG in Washington, D. C. No assignment was too
meaningless for her, she was willing to get her hands dirty and before you
knew it, she moved to MSNBC in 2003. She then became co-anchor of
Weekend Today where she worked for five years before joining ABC News.
Initially, she appeared on “Good Morning America,” as a correspondent
and became the show’s news anchor in 2014. In 2018, Robach became
the new co-anchor of ABC’s 20/20. She has an important role in the lives
of millions of Americans and there is no reluctance to remind everybody
she is a proud graduate of UGA.
After bragging on Georgia winning the national championship
following the defeat of Alabama in Indianapolis, a colleague remarked on
air, “Thanks Amy for that objective report.” Whenever and wherever she
can speak up for Georgia and the “Dawgs,” she has no reluctance. She’ll
give you a broadside.
There has always been an unabated curiosity about those who climb
the mountain, how they function and how they view life from an
elevated station. It is always inspiring to interact with those who are the
best at what they do.
At schools of Journalism across the country, there are countless young
women with the beauty of Aphrodite and the intellect of Athena. Many
aspire for lofty network status, but few, however, are chosen. Amy is one
who has made it big.
You observe Amy’s smiling countenance on “Good Morning America,”
and you see talent, poise and comportment that confirms she performs
before the camera as effortlessly as a brick mason who has been at his
craft for decades; a concert pianist who is flawless on the keyboard at
Carnegie Hall; a pilot landing a jetliner for the 300th time at Heathrow.
There is a savory regard and seasoned respect for her on the air
presence and compelling stories for the network. She is good at what
she does, very good, but when her workday is done, she takes time
to be a homemaker and a mother. In some ways, she is an everyday
mom as much as anything. Her work is important. Her homemaking
responsibilities are equally important.
Born in Michigan, Amy spent her teenage years in Gwinnett County
and was educated at the Henry Grady College of Journalism at the
University of Georgia. It was in Athens that she came to appreciate the
beauty of the campus, the fun Between the Hedges of Sanford Stadium
on Saturday afternoon and the intellectual motivation of a journalism
faculty which underscored a noteworthy blueprint for success—
principally to use your brain for the ultimate achievement in life and roll
up your sleeves and go to work expecting no free lunch.
There is fervid praise for her alma mater in that while her
undergraduate days were an over-the-top experience, she was also the
beneficiary of “a phenomenal education.” She majored in broadcast
journalism with a minor in political science. “I felt that I walked away
(from campus) after those four wonderful years with what I needed to go
out in the real world and succeed.
“I can’t speak highly enough about the journalism school at the
University of Georgia and how it exposed me to the ethics involved, how
to manage media law, and all the things you need to know when you’re
writing a story--and making sure you’re being objective as much as you
can. I felt like I had street smarts to be successful when I walked into my
first newsroom as the result of the education and experience, I got at the
University of Georgia.”
She is a cancer survivor who underwent a mammogram, as a favor
to her colleague Robin Roberts, on national television. She discovered
that she had cancer. Her amazing story has resulted in countless women
becoming proactive by scheduling a mammogram, post haste. They
write her every day about her influence. Her story has made them reach
out to their doctor for an appointment without delay.
The result is that Amy is saving lives every day and simply says,
“The reaction has been overwhelming.” With abundant humility and
gratefulness, she is keenly aware that the most important life she saved
was her own.
WHADDAYA GOT
LORAN
LORAN SMITH
The comeback at Mizzou could be a blessing in disguise as the
entire Bulldog Nation is now sure not to take any SEC foe lightly
Gary Pinkel, who enjoyed noteworthy
success at Toledo and Missouri, was
a guest on the Georgia pre-game
show Saturday, a game in which he
was given his on campus salute as the newest
coach to be inducted into the College Football
Hall of Fame.
In recalling Missouri’s upset of Oklahoma, then
ranked No. 1 in 2010, I asked him how worried
Georgia should be about the game? He, ever
the gentleman, said that it would be helpful if
the Bulldogs brought their “B” game and that
Missouri come with an “A” game.
Pinkel, a close friend of Alabama’s Nick Saban,
who coached with the latter under Don James
at Kent State was not about to say anything
foolish, but he knew that the talent level
favored the Bulldogs. He knew that for the
Tigers to win, Georgia had to help the home
team.
The Bulldogs did that for the better part of
three quarters with an offense that could not
score touchdowns until it counted with time
running out in the fourth quarter.
This could be a blessing in disguise. It is tough
to carry the No. 1 ranking though the season.
There are countless cases where the top ranked
team in the country has escaped close games
by the skin of their teeth. You are going to have
an off day, no matter the team. And it could be
costly. To have survived, however, means that
all Bulldog loyalists should be celebrating not
carping and finding fault.
Even the best pitchers with four days rest don’t
follow up a dominant outing with another the
next time out. A golfer shoots lights out for
two rounds and then loses concentration and
lapses into forgettable shot making that costs
him the tournament.
The reason that Nick Saban has won so many
championships is that he has done such a
good job recruiting that when his team has
an off day, he can beat you with his superior
talent.
I’d like to think that Kirby Smart has reached
that point. It certainly was the case Saturday in
Columbia. His team had an off day but escaped
with victory.
Think of the plusses that should come from this
game. First of all, his players now realize that
all the pats on the back would have included
daggers if the Bulldogs had lost.
The Bulldog players will work harder, they will
pay attention to what the coaches are saying
and now have a chance to bond and move into
position to compete for another championship.
The timing of this toe stumping is fortuitous in
that the game was won. There remains a goose
egg in the loss column, which means that all
goals can be reached. There are no guarantees,
however, but there is no regrouping from the
agony of defeat. None of that will eliminate the
griping and carping, however.
Kirby frequently reminds his players that it is
human nature to lather you up when you are
winning, telling you how great you are, but just
as quickly come with venom and contempt
when you disappoint them.
At an occasion such as this, it is also good to
point out that when he expresses concern
about Vanderbilt which is on the schedule
following Auburn, that he is underscoring the
obvious: This is the Southeastern Conference
and every team has players so it is best to get
yourself in the proper frame of mine to play
an SEC team which can embarrass you when
they play at their best—certainly if you are not
ready to play.
In 1957, Auburn won the national
championship but had a problem defeating
Georgia in Columbus. That was a day when
the Tigers were powerhouse and Georgia was
struggling. Auburn, late in the game enjoyed a
6-0 lead, but the Bulldogs drove down to the War
Eagle one-yard line. A national championship
that game looked dim, but Bulldog quarterback
Charley Britt fumbled a snap at the Auburn
one-yard line. Auburn recovered and a national
championship was saved.
When there is talk of this championship in
the “loveliest village on the plain,” there is no
mention of the Bulldogs offensive mishap on
the Tigers one-yard line.
Maybe that will be the good fortune Georgia
will experience after getting by Missouri on
Saturday night.
WHAT’S
THE WORD
HAMILTON CULPEPPER
KNOX CULPEPPER III JUNKYARD DAWG WHOSE ACTIONS DID THE TALKING
After visiting many other schools
around the country on recruiting
visits, it was time for Knox Culpepper
III to visit his dream school, the University
of Georgia. Upon his arrival, Culpepper was
taken under the wing of legendary senior
linebacker #48 Frank Ros, the number
Culpepper would later choose to wear to
honor a role model like Ros. Ros introduced
Culpepper to the entire team as well as
lettermen, but when it came to meeting
with head coach Vince Dooley, the first
impression was nothing short of incredible.
“It was the best recruiting trip I had been
on by far,” said Culpepper. “I went to meet
with Coach Dooley as all recruits do on all
recruiting trips, but he was the only coach
to ask me for my commitment on the spot,
and I gave it to him right then.”
As a young boy, Culpepper dreamed of
playing at the University of Georgia to
follow in his late father’s footsteps Knox
Culpepper Jr. Culpepper Jr. died when
Culpepper III was 15, but his old-fashioned
disciplinarian ways have stuck with
Culpepper III throughout his life. “He always
said, ‘Make your actions speak louder
than your words,’” said Culpepper. “Since
then, that has always been my philosophy
because that is how he taught and coached
me.” Although Culpepper III’s father was
rather quiet, he was always present, leading
by example rather than vocals.
As Culpepper’s senior year in 1984 rolled
around, Coach Dooley, his staff and the
rest of the team named Culpepper a
captain. Culpepper dreamed of playing at
Georgia, but the honor of being captain
validated all the goals Culpepper had set
in his life thus far. Those lessons that his
father taught him were surely evident to
the rest of the roster as the now senior
linebacker had led by example for the
three years prior.
“I was not the fastest or best athlete,” said
Culpepper. “My philosophy was to be in
better shape and have better technique
than the guy across the ball from me…
As a linebacker, you are the quarterback
of the defense, but I still led by example,
showing out when I was on that field. I
was never a big rah-rah guy.”
Being in the best shape was a necessity for
those Junkyard Dawg defenses, as everyday
of the week they had to practice against
the great Herschel Walker. Culpepper said
he had played the greats in the SEC: George
Rogers, Bo Jackson and George Adams, but
the licks Herschel laid in practice for the
two year they played together were unlike
anything else.
“I tell this story all the time,” said
Culpepper. “I got hit my freshman year in
practice harder than I have ever been hit. I
was coming in on a blitz against Herschel,
and he looked like he was barely moving.
He got underneath my shoulder pads,
and I went backwards. It ended up being
one of those comments in the film room,
‘Fellas, this is how you block a linebacker.’
They proceeded to play it about 50 more
times in film that day.”
Those two years Culpepper played with
and practiced against Herschel paid off
come 1983. In back to back weeks against
Auburn and Georgia Tech, Culpepper
broke the single game tackling records
(and still holds the first and second spots
in this statistic column) with 25 against
Auburn and 26 against the Nerds (Georgia
Tech). What did he eat for breakfast those
two Saturdays in order to do that? It
wasn’t about breakfast for Culpepper; it
was thanks to the practices Coach Dooley
ran. Culpepper said that between twoa-days
and practice during the season,
game time was fun time. Coach Dooley
kicked their butts throughout the week
according to Culpepper, so come game
day, he never got tired for those 60
minutes on Saturdays… that’s how you
compile over 50 tackles in just two weeks.
With practice time restrictions nowadays,
there’s no longer two-a-days and
continuous, grueling practices like there
were in the 80s, but Culpepper is quite
impressed with how Coach Smart gets the
guys ready to compete at the level they
play. Culpepper said that what Coach Smart
accomplishes in the time he is allotted with
those players is just phenomenal. He doesn’t
like to predict, but Culpepper alluded to the
way that this team is performing right now,
there is almost nothing those guys can’t
accomplish.
Before handing in this article, I must tell
a quick Knox Culpepper story. In the early
80s when Culpepper arrived on campus,
my father John Culpepper, a 10-year-old
at the time, got a puppy and named him
Knox after #48. My family and Knox share
a last name, a great one at that, but we are
not related except through that little black
lab in 1981 and a university we both call
home. However, after talking for just 20
minutes on the phone, this Damn Good
Dawg and his humor is a person I’d gladly
call family. Cheers to a great interview and
an even better last name.
FROM THE FIELD
FINALLY A TOUCHDOWN!
BY GREG POOLE
GEORGIA - 26, MISSOURI - 22
As they say, an ugly win is still a win. UGA has won two ugly
ones in the last two weeks, and I wonder where the team
that destroyed Oregon is hiding? Let’s face it, the Dawgs have
underwhelmed recently, and there are challenging games
against talented teams on the horizon.
As I write this in a hotel room area near the Mizzou campus,
it is tempting to rail about the sloppy play on both sides of the
ball, and there was plenty of it. However, we should give some
credit to the players and staff of the Tigers. Missouri played
hard, and they left everything they had on the field, and even
on a bad night, the Dawgs took control at the end. Maybe, that
exertion of command is what we should be looking at after two
games that could quickly have gone the way.
No matter how one tries to rationalize the Missouri and the
Kent State games, the stark reality of giving up 44 points to Kent
and Mizzou after allowing just 10 points in the first three games
of 2022 is worrying.
Injuries have hurt, but that is why Coach Smart and his staff
spend so much time and money recruiting quality depth.
Football is violent, and the result of SEC games is injuries
for all league teams. Managing player health is a coaching
responsibility, just like other aspects of the game.
Even though it was not pretty, the win column is one digit
larger. The Dawgs survived the Missouri onslaught and are
still undefeated. At this point, that is all that matters. Indeed,
the talking heads will wonder what’s wrong with Georgia. The
Dawgs seem likely to drop in the polls, and that will cause much
consternation among fans.
Despite our worry, fear, or maybe anger, the Georgia Bulldogs
are undefeated as we move to the sixth game of the season.
Auburn will arrive in Athens having managed to slip by Mizzou
by 17-14 only two weeks ago. After Auburn, Vandy visits
Athens, and the Dogs have a bye week before the contest in
Jacksonville. Time to heal, practice, and allow Kirby Smart and
staff to correct the mistakes and prepare for the run to the SEC
Championship.
GEORGIA – 26
MISSOURI - 22
BY: COBY SERINA
A look back at what decided the game
between Georgia and Missouri.
Surviving what was a wild road
environment for the Georgia Bulldogs, the
team found themselves at real risk of losing
for the first time this season against an
unranked Missouri. The Tigers were said to
be “really aggressive” according to Coach
26-22
Smart, and they lived up to that reputation
last Saturday.
It was issues up front that prevented
the Georgia offense from executing to
the standard at which they had been all
season and almost cost them the game.
If it weren’t for the kicking consistency of
St. Simons Island native Jack Podlesny and
the running ability of Daijun Edwards, the
Dawgs would not have come away with a
win in Columbia. The Dawgs’ performance
against the Tigers leaves a lot of questions
for fans, so the following statistics should
help explain what the team did right in its
comeback victory against Mizzou.
100%
To open his postgame interview Coach Kirby
Smart gave kudos to Coach Eli Drinkwitz
and Missouri Tigers and the atmosphere
that they created at Faurot Field. The fans
were definitely a factor in the game. Their
raucousness may have been the reason
behind a false start penalty here or there,
but one thing the ‘Zou couldn’t do was
hinder Jack Podlesny and his perfect night.
Podlesny was 4 for 4 on field goals and 2
for 2 on extra points against the Tigers. Jack
Podlesny or “Pod” according to Smart was
labeled as an “MVP” for the game against
Missouri. It’s a well deserved appraisal. If it
weren’t for Pod, the Dawgs wouldn’t have
been able to stay in the game. He didn’t
kick a game-winning field goal, but his
made field goals proved very important in
Georgia’s comeback in Columbia.
8
8
During the offseason, there was plenty
of hype directed at the young linebacker
Jamon “Pop” Dumas-Johnson. Both
teammates and coaches of his will attest,
Pop is the guy on the Georgia defense. Now
that we’re a good bit through the season,
that hype remains. Talk about athletic. It
feels like Pop is a pinball at the linebacker
position. Explosive, just bouncing around
to wherever he needs to be to make a
play. One thing to note is that he plays so
smoothly; he has zero trouble getting to the
ball. It’s almost like he’s floating out there.
The sophomore had seven solo stops, eight
total, and one of them was for a loss. He also
accounted for one pass deflection which
should have been a pick. Pop isn’t perfect
though. He has some things to pick up on
at the position, following in the steps of
Nakobe Dean, Quay Walker, and Channing
Tindall is a hard task, but it seems to be a
task he’s doing well.
11
Third-year running back Daijun Edwards
carried the ball 11 yards for 4.9 yards for 4.5
yards per carry in Columbia. While these
numbers aren’t particularly gaudy, they
exemplify one of Edwards’ key traits as of
right now: consistency. Against Missouri,
Edwards showed up when he was needed
the most and was able to tote the rock to
close out the game securing the victory. The
south Georgia native, is slowly emerging as a
more prominent player in Georgia’s running
back room, and that come up was hastened
by his performance against Missouri.
These were the number of receptions
that tight ends Brock Bowers and Darnell
Washington caught against the Tigers. Since
bursting onto the scene last year, Bowers
has consistently earned targets, so now that
it’s carrying over into this year, it isn’t much
of a surprise. But in regards to Washington,
his increased role comes after an entire
offseason of rah-rah surrounding Georgia’s
tight end room. Now that the excitement is
being realized and Washington is becoming
more and more featured, he too is earning
the trust of the offense in turn earning more
targets. This stat just goes to show how
much the tight end room means to the
Georgia Bulldogs.
KEVIN BUTLER’S PLAYERS OF THE GAME
Each week, Georgia and Chicago Bears
Hall of Fame legend Kevin Butler
picks his Players of the Game. A
member of numerous Halls of
Fame and holder of a slew of
records, Butler co-hosts DawgTalk
on Georgia Football Saturdays
and the famous Bulldog Brunch
from the Hilltop Grille on Sundays.
— COMPILED BY JEFF DANTZLER
OFFENSIVE PLAYER
Darnell Washington - The tower of power had another very
productive game that helped the Georgia offense find pay dirt
late in the fourth quarter versus a focused Missouri football
team. #0 does what he does best, YACs -getting those “yards
after the catch” that makes a big difference to the Georgia
offense. Standing 6-7, 270-pound - at least - Darnell is averaging
18 yards per catch this season and complemented those stats
Saturday with three catches for 64 yards. When Darnell catches
the ball, it’s easy to see the Tower of Power but watch the film
and witness what a superior blocker Darnell has turned into.
Whether it’s through the air or pushing people on the ground
Darnell is another star on the Georgia offense.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER
Malaki Starks - The freshman sensation from Jefferson, Georgia
plays like he is a seasoned veteran in the Georgia defensive
backfield. Standing 6-1, 205-pound, Malaki is not intimidated
by anybody he has faced. Registering six tackles with four
solos and a pass deflection, Malaki is a force in the secondary
for UGA. Not many freshmen step in on defense and make a
name for themselves like Malaki has. His hustle was evident by
running down a Mizzou player to stop a dagger, touchdown
opportunity for Missouri at the 1-yard line. This gave the defense
an opportunity to complement Malaki’s hustle and turn Missouri
back from the end zone forcing them to settle for a field goal.
Malaki is a great athlete and gives Georgia a shutdown DB for
years to come.
SPECIAL TEAM PLAYER
Jack Podlesny - In a game that featured kickers, Jack performed at
his best against Missouri. 4 for 4 on field-goal attempts, registering
14 points that gave Georgia the ability to stay close to Missouri
until the offense found the end zone. Jack is becoming one of the
most reliable kickers in all of college football and will certainly
play a role in every game the Dogs face in the SEC. A native of
St. Simons - all the people that live there are certainly excited to
watch their home boy take good care of the dogs using his right
foot. He may not weigh as much as Mavis (Mizzou’s kicker) but we
will take him every day as Georgia’s kicker.
FOOTBALL
MORE SPORTS
The calendar has rolled into October, it’s the heart of the college football
season. Loads of big conference games highlight the slate. Georgia had
a scary affair at Missouri, but pulled it out. Bryce Young was injured in
Alabama’s win. It was a monster weekend in the Magnolia State, as Ole
Miss beat Kentucky and Mississippi State topped Texas A&M. TCU and
Kansas are both undefeated and play a big one this weekend.
1. ALABAMA - It was a big win at Arkansas, as Bama
survived the Hogs push and Bryce Young’s injury. Now
comes the game the college football world has been
anticipating. Alabama and Texas A&M with Nick Saban and Jimbo
Fisher taking center stage.
2. OHIO STATE - The Buckeyes fell behind Rutgers
7-0, but then turned it on and dominated the Scarlet
Knights 49-10. Now Ohio State heads to Michigan
State for a classic Big Ten battle. The Spartans are struggling. The
Buckeyes are rolling.
3. GEORGIA - The Bulldogs survived a scary night
in CoMo, escaping with a 26-22 win over Missouri.
Back-to-back fourth quarter touchdowns delivered the
triumph. Now comes ancient rival Auburn as the Bulldogs try to
bump that record to 6-0 and 3-0 in the SEC.
4. CLEMSON - The Tigers are roaring after a 30-20
victory over N.C. State. Clemson is clicking and has the
most talent in the ACC. They’ll have to be sharp and
avoid the trap at Boston College this week with a trip to Florida
State on deck.
5. TENNESSEE - The Volunteers had a week off to
soak in their big win over Florida in Knoxville. Now it’s
grind time in the SEC. Tennessee ventures to LSU for a
huge showdown between two programs. Emperor Saban awaits
on deck.
6. OLE MISS - The Rebels secured a thrilling 22-19
victory over Kentucky in a highly touted showdown
in beautiful Oxford. The Ole Miss defense and special
teams came up with the big plays, and the Rebels are 5-0. Next up
is Vandy in Music City USA.
7. MICHIGAN - The Wolverines took down Iowa 27-14
in Iowa City. Michigan is now 5-0 and 2-0 in the Big Ten.
Michigan ventures to Indiana Saturday for a second
straight road trip. A battle with Penn State looms.
8. SOUTHERN CAL - The Trojans had a little more
trouble with Arizona State than expected, but pulled out
a 42-25 win. Next up is Washington State, and Southern
Cal must guard against looking ahead to Utah the next week.
9. OKLAHOMA STATE - The Cowboys had an open
date and capitalized with a 36-25 victory at Baylor. It was
the Big XII opener. Now the Cowboys take on always
dangerous Texas Tech in Stillwater. Oklahoma State is clicking.
10. KENTUCKY - It was a heartbreaker for Kentucky
in Oxford, as the Wildcats fell to Ole Miss 22-19. A
couple of extra point miscues and two red zone
fumbles were killers. Kentucky will try and get well Saturday night
against South Carolina in Lexington.
11. MISSISSIPPI STATE - The Maroon Bulldogs
made the big plays and scored in all three phases in
an impressive 42-24 win over the Aggies in College
Station. Arkansas comes to call Saturday. The Hogs are limping.
Will Rogers is a top flight quarterback.
12. UTAH - Since a heart-breaking loss to Florida in the
season-opener, the Running Utes of Kyle Whittingham
have put it all together and ripped off four consecutive
victories. Utah has a huge game at 5-0 UCLA this week.
13. OREGON - Since the season-opening loss to
Georgia, the quack attack has been gaining some serious
steam. Oregon took down Stanford 45-27 to make it 4-1
and 2-0 in the PAC-12. The Ducks are at Arizona Saturday.
14. BRIGHAM YOUNG - The Cougars put together a
Thursday night 38-26 win over Utah State. BYU didn’t play
great, but the Cougars are 4-1 with a couple of extra days for
Notre Dame in Las Vegas. What a setting for BYU and the Fighting Irish.
15. TCU - It was a game to remember for TCU, as the Horned
Frogs scored 27 points in the first quarter and beat
Oklahoma 55-24. TCU is 4-0 and has its hands full on
Saturday, taking on resurgent 5-0 Kansas in Lawrence.
