Parramatta’s long, painful wait for a
drought-breaking Premiership will
drag on for at least another year.
The Eels were completely outclassed
in Sunday’s NRL Grand Final, falling to
western Sydney rivals Penrith 28-12.
Only two late tries to Clint Gutherson
and Jake Arthur put some respect into the
scoreline.
Penrith were dominant from the opening
whistle, never relenting in a first class
performance to become just the second
team to win back-to-back Premierships in
the NRL era.
Stephen Crichton, Brian To’o and Scott
Community News Update
Message from Mayor Lake
NRL Grand Final
Cumberland has been in footy fever following the NRL
Grand Finals over the weekend. It was great to see the
support for Parramatta around the LGA with businesses
and residents getting into the spirit with blue and gold
merchandise along our streets, buildings and offices, all for our great local
team. The Eels have a long-standing connection to Cumberland with
roots dating back to 1908 when Parramatta formed part of the Central
Cumberland Club and the team participated in the first Sydney Rugby
League Premiership season. At the time of printing this publication, it is
not known who wins the 2022 Premiership but I would like to extend my
congratulations to the Parramatta Eels. Both the mens and womens
teams have made us proud and we look forward to celebrating with
you over the course of this week.
New Deputy Mayor
Cumberland City Council is pleased to welcome a new Deputy Mayor to
its chambers following an Ordinary Meeting of Council on Wednesday
28 September. Councillor Suman Saha has been elected as the new
Cumberland City Council Deputy Mayor and takes over the position from
Councillor Kun Huang who will remain a Councillor for the Regents Park
Ward. The motion was actioned in accordance with section 231 (1) of the
Local Government Act 1993 and the term is now in effect from 28 September
2022 to September 2023. Councillor Suman Saha is a Wentworthville Ward
Councillor and has lived in the Cumberland area with his family since
2005. He was first elected as a Councillor in 2017 and since then has been
working closely with many of our multicultural communities, especially our
subcontinent groups. Congratulations to Deputy Mayor Saha, I look forward
to working closely with you and seeing the work you do in our community.
Residents make
opposition clear
LOCAL NEWS
ELLIE BUSBY
Wentworth Point residents have
turned up in force to protest
against a revised scheme, which
could see two 45-storey high-rise residential
developments tower over the suburb.
A proposed amendment to the Homebush
Bay West Development Control Plan (DCP)
for Block H, Precinct B, 16 Burroway Road
and part 5 Footbridge Boulevard, Wentworth
Point, has caused division amongst councillors.
The amendment would look to change the
DCP, which currently allows for a maximum
height of 25 storeys, in order to build a highrise
residential development that has two
towers, a podium element and open space
provision.
Following public exhibition of the proposed
development, Council received a total of
763 submissions – 64 per cent of which were
opposed to the proposed changes.
To address concerns, the proposal’s
applicant, Billbergia, supplied an outline
of a revised scheme, which would see two
45-storey towers, instead of the original 40
and 50 storey towers that were exhibited, and
1,000 new apartments.
Following the September 12 Council meeting,
which saw councillors opt not to reject the
proposed amendment despite the recommendation,
deciding instead that further information
was required to support consideration of
the alternative scheme, locals have aired their
frustrations.
Over 40 residents attended the most recent
Council meeting with signs that read ‘support
the rescission’ and ‘no to Noack,’ voicing their
support for the rescission motion. A petition
opposing the amendment, which received
over 400 signatures in just four days, was also
submitted.
The rescission motion, moved by Councillor
Dr Patricia Prociv, urged the council to refuse
the proposed amendment to the Homebush
Bay West DCP.
Cr Prociv said the residents of Wentworth
Point want councillors to represent the interests
of all the residents.
“The petition that was presented tonight
requests that Council respect the results of
the public exhibition, where 64 per cent of
the residents opposed the proposed amendment,”
she said.
“It is our duty as councillors to respect and
support the voices of our community, in this
case the community of Wentworth Point.”
Cr Kellie Darley supported the rescission
motion and said two 45-storey towers is out of
character for Wentworth Point.
“When we hear all the evidence from the
community and when the council staff
recommends that we refuse the planning
proposal to draw a line in the sand, I really
Wentworth Point residents protesting at the latest Parramatta Council meeting.
The two 45-storey high-rise residential developments as part of the revised scheme.
have to ask why are we ignoring that advice?”
she said.
However, Cr Paul Noack hit back over
concerns for the revised scheme and said
there had been “confusion” over the September
12 Council decision.
“There is no scheme before this Council
now, there is no proposed 45 storeys,” he said.
In support of Cr Noack, Cr Michelle Garrard
also referenced the ‘No to Noack’ signs some
of the residents held.
“This is not the Noack amendment, this was
the chamber’s amendment – there were 10
people in this chamber who supported it.”
Despite the turn out of support from Wentworth
Point residents, the rescission motion
failed to pass. Further information on the
revised scheme will be submitted in order for
the Council to consider it for the purposes of
public exhibition.
West is won, but remains divided
One intriguing sub-plot out of Sunday’s NRL
Grand Final is the huge reality check for the
AFL and the fact the sport’s assault on western
Sydney is failing dramatically.
We’ve heard for years about the millions
and millions of dollars the AFL is pouring into
western Sydney and the GWS Giants, playing
the long game through schools and banking
on generational shift. But it’s now been a decade
since GWS entered the competition and
their impact has been minimal.
The AFL can do as many school visits as it
likes, can keep pouring money into GWS and
can take little wins like goal posts going up in
sporting ovals, but nothing is shaking the reality
that rugby league owns western Sydney.
The AFL will keep pouring cash into GWS,
believing that eventually, the crowds will
come. But it’s flogging a dead horse.
Sydney is a stubborn city; and western Sydney
even moreso.
All rugby league needed was to get its house
in order in western Sydney and last Sunday
night’s Grand Final proves it has.
Why Optus data saga is a major
wake-up call for all Australians
It’s not every day an email lobs into your
main inbox from a “Mrs Susan Pujok” from
the “Basel-Stadt (District Court)” in Switzerland.
So I paid it extra attention; its contents
were alarming. “We regret to inform you that
you have been a victim of internet fraud/identity
theft. Your identity and consumer credit
files were compromised during a data breach
where millions of taxpayers’ information were
exposed to hackers and used in a scheme now
uncovered by federal authorities.”
The message must have evaded Gmail’s
spam filters. A terrified check of my bank accounts
found everything in order. If my personal
details were now bobbing around the
dark web, there wasn’t much I could do.
But it was enough to set nerves jangling in a
week where millions of Australians potentially
had their personal details – names, birthdays,
phone numbers, email addresses, home addresses
and identity documents like passports
and drivers’ licenses – exposed following the
massive data breach at Optus.
I’ve previously been an Optus customer. For
some reason, the telco hasn’t notified me that
I’ve been affected, and I’m not sure whether to
be worried or relieved.
Our new mobile and digital existence has its
attractions. But as we know, it comes with an
underbelly of sludge. For example, I’m now
routinely texted mysterious links, telling me to
News...........................................................1-14
Turning Back Time............................15
Business................................................16-18
pay overdue road tolls I didn’t access; to “confirm
FedEx shipment details” for products I
haven’t ordered; or bombarded with messages
from people who’ve “arrived in Australia
and are currently single”. For some reason, I’m
regularly entreatied in Chinese from a “Mrs
Hui” who owns an optometrist in Hurstville.
No doubt it’s the price we pay for connectivity.
You learn to be vigilant. Not click on any
dodgy links or accidentally hand over money.
Of course, all that would change in a hurry
if someone started using a false passport or
taking out a mortgage in your name. Perhaps
siphoning money from your bank account for
bills you don’t recognise. In the days since the
Optus breach, cyber fraudsters and lowlifes
have launched a new wave of scams, even impersonating
the telco or demanding ransom.
The Optus saga is a wake-up call. The onus
to protect our data should be greatest on the
tech leaders. Yet Yahoo, Facebook, LinkedIn,
Adobe and Alibaba have all suffered major
breaches in recent years. If they can’t manage
our private information, what hope is there?
One of the most notorious all-time hacks
involved the Ashley Madison personals’ site
in 2015, which released highly sensitive data
about people’s extramarital affairs. Yet data
breaches are not just embarrassing nuisances.
Increasingly, they have the potential to impact
critical infrastructure and economic interests.
Entertainment................................19-29
Business Directory.....................30-31
Sport.............................................................32
Witness the ransomware attack on the Colonial
Pipeline last year, shutting down oil supplies
across the US east coast. Or the software
breach of cloud platform Kaseya, infecting
thousands of businesses around the world.
Data security is a challenge we simply must
get a handle on to capitalise on the potential
of digital transformation. Whether shopping
for fashion or furniture, downloading music or
booking flights, virtually all of us transact now
with retailers online. So much of our lives are
now stored in Service NSW. The Federal Government
has set up My Health Record. Our
public transport mobility is tracked via Opal
data. And these are just the building blocks
for future innovative uses of data leveraging
capabilities such as blockchain and artificial
intelligence. The whole idea of Parramatta as
a “smart city” involves placing digital sensors
on assets such as security cameras and street
lights to regulate how pedestrians and traffic
move around.
Some Australians may be prepared to entertain
these use cases in return for greater
convenience, a better deal or a better experience.
But popular consent requires trust in the
technology – and the organisations promising
the benefits. A reputation that has taken decades
to build up can be shredded in an instant
– and that’s something Optus is learning the
hard way right now.
Putting Parra on the map
Parramatta’s stunning new community hub is now centrepiece of world class city
ELLIE BUSBY
It has been called the “pièce de résistance”
of Parramatta, and now, the new community,
cultural and civic hub has officially
opened.
After much anticipation, the $136 million
PHIVE centre located in the heart of
Parramatta has finally been unveiled to the
public. With a new two-level library, Council
chambers, wellness studio, tech labs and
a pop-up café on its way, PHIVE has been
designed to house “world-class” facilities that
the whole community can explore.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Donna
Davis said PHIVE is the bold centrepiece of
Parramatta Square’s $2.7 billion transformation.
“The opening of PHIVE has finally arrived,
this is the living room in the heart of the city of
Parramatta,” she said.
“It’s a unique building that reflects our
unique community, a wonderfully diverse
community with a rich history and a promising
future. I’m so looking forward to our
community being able to embrace this building.”
With a bright red and orange tessellated roof
and unique design, PHIVE is hard to miss.
Designed to reflect the colours of Australian
fauna, the vibrant colour scheme is carried
throughout the building with orange floors
Young readers enjoy the wide selection of books available, with the help of ‘The Gruffalo’.
French architect Manuelle Gautrand, in partnership
Constructed by Australian group Built,
also incorporates the city’s rich history
throughout the building, with a Keeping
Place that enables First Nations cultural
material and knowledge to be conserved and
celebrated on Country.
“PHIVE reflects our diverse history, particularly
it has a Keeping Room that recognises
the rich Burramatagal and Dharug history
of our area and of western Sydney,” Cr Davis
said.
“[It] is extremely significant, it’s the
only place in a local government building
in Australia that has a special place for
Burramatagal people to keep their special
items of significance.”
A development years in the making, plans
for PHIVE were originally discussed over two
decades ago.
“Back in 1996, the councillors at the time
had a vision to build a new council chamber
and community facility, and incorporate a
new library in the heart of Parramatta,” Cr
Davis said.
“It has taken until today to actually achieve
that.”
To celebrate the opening, City of Parramatta
Council hosted a weekend of free activities,
which included everything from a comic
workshop with a Marvel artist to silent discos
and gin-making workshops.
Cr Davis said in order to be a great city, there
needs to be great places for everybody to
enjoy, and PHIVE certainly now ticks that box
for Parramatta.
“PHIVE will definitely put Parramatta on
the map as one of the world’s greatest cities,”
Cr Davis said.
“Just as the Opera House draws people into
Sydney, PHIVE has got that sense of place that
really will attract people to Parramatta.”
Place of the Eels unveiled
I was delighted to launch, Place of the Eels, our new public
artwork in the heart of the Parramatta CBD last Friday.
Created by Western Sydney artists Claire Healy and
Sean Cordeiro, the eight-metre tall, aluminium
replica of a vintage bus is now permanently parked
in Parramatta Square.
This sculpture is a conversation starter encapsulating
a number of intriguing stories, colourful characters
and some important moments in our City’s history.
The artwork itself is modelled on the 1960s Leyland
Worldmaster bus used by the Parramatta Eels rugby
league team to conduct meetings during their
premiership-winning years in the 1980s.
The bus also includes insignia that pays tribute to
Rosie Bint Broheen, one of the first Lebanese women
to purchase property in Parramatta; local legend
William Francis King, also known as ‘The Flying Pieman’,
and the Parramatta Industrial School for Girls.
Make sure you get down to Parramatta Square to
see Place of the Eels and reflect on some of the
people that have contributed to our great City.
LORD
MAYOR’S
MESSAGE
CR DONNA
DAVIS
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Donna Davis (centre) with
former Parramatta Eels players David Liddiard and Peter Wynn
at the City’s new public artwork, Place of the Eels.
PHIVE comes alive
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Donna Davis recently held
some community tours of PHIVE.
I’ve spoken to so many people who’ve already
visited PHIVE and the reaction is always the same,
‘Wow. Amazing building and spaces for our City!’
Ever since opening day, our new community, cultural
and civic hub has been a hive of activity. Something
is happening in every corner of the six-storey building
– from dance classes in the lobby, to silent discos
and science workshops in the maker spaces and
wellness studios.
I recently had the chance to host some community
tours and it was an absolute joy to share with residents
all the wonderful services and facilities offered in our
new building.
If you haven’t visited PHIVE, I encourage you to come
down and find your space. PHIVE is a place to find
local services, create in our maker spaces and sound
labs, or simply meet friends for a coffee or bite to eat.
It also houses a new library, creative spaces, meeting
rooms, study areas, studio and recording booths, as
well the Council Chambers and visitor services.
Another accolade for our Escarpment
Boardwalk
The Parramatta River Escarpment Boardwalk recently
won a Good Design Australia Award in the architectural
category alongside other significant projects including
the Grampians Peak Trail in Victoria and Goyder
Square in the Northern Territory. Council received the
Powerhouse Design Award which is given to a project
that has potential to make a significant improvement
to the quality of health, wellbeing or the environment.
Officially opened in April 2021, the Escarpment
Boardwalk is one of the final links of the popular
Parramatta Valley Cycleway, connecting more than
20km of continuous off-road paths along both sides
of the Parramatta River, from Parramatta Park to
Melrose Park. The river foreshore paths are used by
more than one million pedestrians and cyclists every
year in the City.
Earlier in the year, the
Escarpment Boardwalk won an
award for Engineering Excellence
for projects greater than $5 million at
the Institute of Public Works Engineering
Australasia NSW & ACT Awards.
We are so lucky to have a boardwalk that makes the
most of the local natural environment and Parramatta
River – congratulations to all Council staff who helped
deliver this project.
Why not take a walk this week on our award winning
boardwalk?
City of Parramatta’s ‘Welcome Here’ spaces
Earlier this year City of Parramatta, in partnership
with Woolworths Group, invited local businesses to
join the ‘Welcome Here Project’ demonstrating their
commitment to provide safe places for our lesbian, gay,
bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LGBTQI+)
communities to work, relax, have fun and learn.
Council facilities including libraries and community
centres as well as full-sized Woolworths Supermarkets
are already proudly displaying the ‘Welcome Here’
sticker.
The following businesses are now ‘Welcome Here’ sites:
• White Henry Café
• Teddy Black Café
• Sydney Sports Medicine
• 4uu4 Cups
• Umaya
• Parramatta Bike Tours
• Karabi Community Development Services
• Dundas Area Neighbourhood Centre
City of Parramatta is one of four Councils in NSW
to join the ‘Welcome Here’ program. We are proudly
working with local partners to improve community
inclusion and reduce discrimination.
For more information, visit:
Applications (DAs), items on exhibition, and public notices will now be available via Council’s website:
Cumberland Council welcomes
new Deputy Mayor after vote
ELLIE BUSBY
Labor Councillor Suman Saha vows
to ensure all voices are heard as he
becomes Cumberland City Council’s
new Deputy Mayor.
Cr Saha has replaced fellow Labor Councillor
Kun Huang in the role of Deputy Mayor, as
he looks to serve alongside Mayor Lisa Lake
for the next 12 months.
During the latest Cumberland City Council
meeting, Cr Saha went up against Our Local
Community’s (OLC) Helen Hughes, receiving
nine votes to six. Cr Hughes congratulated Cr
Saha and said she hopes he enjoys his next 12
months as Deputy Mayor.
Dressed in a Parramatta Eels jersey underneath
a blazer, Cr Saha addressed the Council
for the first time as Deputy Mayor.
“I stand up and thank the people of Cumberland,
especially the people of the Wentworthville
ward, for placing their trust in me,” he
said.
“It’s a great honour to be elected your Deputy
Mayor, to serve the Cumberland community
for the next 12 months.”
Cr Saha credited the Labor councillors and
fellow branch members for helping him take
this next step in his council career, praising
the General Manager and staff also for their
work.
“Thanks to my fellow councillors, especially
my Labor councillors, for showing faith in
me, I look forward to much more harmonious
and good working relationships among all the
councillors,” he said.
“I look forward to supporting Mayor Lake,
I’ve known [her] for 15 years, we’ve shared
our disappointments, celebrated our victories
together and we’ve helped each other.”
Reflecting on his journey to Australia and to
local politics, Cr Saha thanked his family for
their support.
“I arrived in Australia in 2003 as an international
student with my Bengali accent and
ethnicity, which I’m very proud of, and settled
in Australia as a skilled migrant,” he said.
“Thanks to my parents, I could never be
where I am today without their support and
guidance.”
Living in the Cumberland area since 2005,
Cr Saha was first elected as a Cumberland
Councillor in 2017.
Ensuring everyone has access to Council’s
services, regardless of their age,
gender and ethnicity, will continue to
be a key focus for Cr Saha as he moves
forward in the new role.
“I am here because I want to make a
difference and ensure all voices are
heard,” he said.
“I believe we are at our strongest
and our best when we come
together to deliver for
Cumberland.”
Cr Lake, who
remains Mayor,
welcomed her
fellow Wentworthville
Ward councillor
to the role
and said she looks
forward to continuing
to work with
Cr Saha over the
next 12 months.
Auburn: Man charged over alleged
serious assault
A man has been charged following an
investigation into an alleged assault in
Auburn in August.
About 6.45pm on Wednesday, August 10,
a 43-year-old man was approached and
allegedly assaulted by an unknown man in
the driveway of a home on Rawson Street,
Recently reaching a milestone anniversary,
local club Wenty Leagues
has celebrated 60 years in community
service.
From humble beginnings to being ranked
in the top five registered clubs in NSW,
Wenty Leagues has come a long way in 60
years. Celebrating the occasion with a threecourse
meal and entertainment, Wenty
Leagues took 200 guests on a journey of past
to present community club operations.
Originally opening its doors in 1962 with
just 46 Foundation Life Members, the club
has since gone through many transformations,
with the biggest in most recent years
being the completion of the Club’s $120
million Master Plan.
These upgrades saw new food and beverage
outlets like Char Steak and Seafood and
Envy Bar make its new home in the club.
The Wenty Events Centre also led to Wenty
Leagues hosting everything from weddings
to corporate events – something that came
in handy when the club celebrated its 60th
anniversary.
Events like Magpie Family Fun Day and
Carols on Ringrose are a staple on the
community calendar, with Wenty Leagues
proud to deliver the events for free to residents
of Cumberland.
Over the past 60 years, Wenty Leagues has
provided significant funding assistance via
its ClubGrants program to organisations
with initiatives within the local community,
enabling them to continue to support
individuals and groups for the benefit of the
local area.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the club
said Wenty Leagues is proud to be known as
the “home away from home”.
“Wenty Leagues is honoured to have
grown with the Wentworthville Community
and more broadly the Cumberland local
government area over the past 60 years and
looks forwards to continuing that responsibility
and community growth now and into
the future,” the statement said.
“We are proud of our last 60 years but more
importantly look forward to our next 60
years in community service.”
LAST WEEK’S ANSWER
Last week’s photograph was of the basketball court at John
Wearn Reserve on Farnell Avenue, Carlingford.
The soaring prices for food and
drink inside stadiums is getting out
of control. You would have needed
a second mortgage to afford a pie
and a beer at Accor Stadium on
Sunday night. It’s hard not to feel that it’s not
just a huge profit grab.
Channel Nine’s Mat Thompson did
an awesome job calling his first
NRL Grand Final on Sunday night.
Mat is from Sydney’s west and had
plenty of pressure on him after the
retirement of Ray Warren. He knocked it out of
the park.
The way Parramatta came
together to celebrate Grand Final
Week last week was something
truly special. It was great to see so
much blue and gold throughout
the city. Well done to everyone who took part
in the festivities!
The number of rip-offs and scams
we heard about in Grand Final
Week was extraordinary. It’s so
disappointing that so many people
want to take advantage of others.
It’s also clear that everyone involved in ticketing
needs stronger strategies.
Fortnightly markets will offer
much-needed community boost
ELLIE BUSBY
Food stalls, live music and pop-up play
areas will soon be on its way to Epping,
following the approval of temporary
markets.
A recent City of Parramatta Local Planning
Panel (LPP) has given the green light for a new
temporary market to go ahead in Epping.
Known as The Langston Markets, the event
will be located in the shared space of Chambers
Court between The Langston residential
towers.
Operating fortnightly every Sunday from
9am to 1pm, the “bespoke” markets intend to
largely serve the residents within The Langston
development and surrounding areas.
The market dates will be in accordance with
approved conditions of consent provided by
City of Parramatta.
The Langston Markets will typically host
between 35 to 50 stallholders per event
and feature market vendors who sell fresh
produce, food and beverage; live acoustic
music; community organisation stalls and
children’s activities such as face painting and
pop-up play areas.
The Statement of Environmental Effects
(SEE) said the temporary markets will “positively
contribute” to the economic and social
development of The Langston development
Where the new markets are proposed to be held.
and wider town centre by providing entertainment
and activation of the public domain.
“The proposal will complement the
approved development and will benefit the
vitality and vibrancy of the retail and dining
precinct at ground level,” the document said.
An initiative by Cbus Property, the Langston
Markets will also aim to foster a “sense of
community” amongst locals and assist in
creating a walkable Epping town centre by
providing a local benefit for residents.
The Plan of Management revealed the
market operators will invite local business
to participate in the market and extend their
presence within the Epping area.
The document said the temporary markets
received the largest response from locals yet,
with majority in support of what is anticipated
to become a popular event.
“The markets are supported by the future
residents with 72 per cent of residents identifying
markets as a desired activity,” the Plan
of Management said.
The markets are expected to hold a capacity
of between 500 and 800 patrons over the
course of the four-hour period.
Despite this, the document stated that the
potential noise and traffic impacts of the
temporary markets are considered to be
minor in nature.
“It is important to minimise disruption to
local and surrounding residents and businesses
by monitoring the level of noise created
by the event,” it said.
“Noisy activities should be located within
the venue in an area that is least likely to affect
nearby residents.”
Approval for the markets comes after it was
confirmed a Mint Fresh IGA would open in
The Langston’s retail space.
Sit back, relax and
read for a cause
LOCAL NEWS
ELLIE BUSBY
This coming Booktober, people are
being encouraged to pick up a book
and open up a new chapter in children’s
literacy.
For the month of October, not-for-profit
charity WestWords is hoping more people will
sign up to the annual event and read more
books for a good cause.
Created to provide books and literacy
programs to under-resourced schools in
greater western Sydney, Booktober aims to
give opportunities to children who may not
necessarily receive them.
Speaking from the Parramatta WestWords
office, WestWords Executive Director Michael
Campbell said he encourages more people to
register to become a ‘bookworm’ and raise
funds during Booktober.
“Booktober both gives and is giving,” he
said.
“Give and directly enable some of the most
important work we can do as a community
by assisting our next generation to reach their
potential.”
And for those who are reluctant to run marathons
or shave off hair, Booktober presents
a relaxing alternative – all you need to do is
“stop, breathe and read a book”.
“I don’t know of any other fundraisers that
ask you to stop the busyness of life, sit down
and nurture yourself with a good book,” Mr
Campbell said.
“You’re doing good things for you and you’re
doing good things for kids in western Sydney
– it’s a win-win.”
Working directly with schools, WestWords
creates a platform for kids in western Sydney
to build confidence, discover commonality
within their differences and create their own
identity through storytelling.
Coming off of two years of disruptive learning,
it’s never been more important for the
team at WestWords to provide an opportunity
to help develop the literacy and life skills of
the younger generation.
“I kid you not, we have kids through our
schools program who say WestWords have
changed their lives,” Mr Campbell told Parra
News.
“It develops skills so that they can form ideas
and articulate their imagination, and once
you give that to a child you set them up for the
rest of their life.”
For those interested in participating in the
fundraiser, Mr Campbell said it’s a simple
process to sign up.
“They just jump on our website and sign up,
we’ll send some tips on what to do and how to
do it in order to encourage people to sponsor
you, and then you choose the books you want
to read,” he said.
“We’ve got a partner, Booktopia, and as soon
as you sign up you will get within 24 hours
WestWords Executive Director Michael Campbell. Photo: Melissa Stevens.
a code that will give you a discount on any
books that you order through them.
“Please join us – it makes a difference – we all
need a good book this Booktober.”
Booktober is on now through to Monday,
October 31.
TURNING BACK TIME
Check out this throwback to
St George’s Terrace in 1987!
This photo of the two-storey
landmark building was
taken from across the road at
91 Phillip Street, Parramatta.
George Coates reportedly
built St George’s Terrace at 44
Phillip Street in 1881.
It is, perhaps, safe to assume
they included ‘George’ in
the building’s name as an
homage to the family patriarch
and master builder.
In present times, St George’s
Terrace looks very different,
with the Parramatta
Powerhouse currently under
construction on the site.
BUSINESS
WITH NATHAN TODD
WESTERN SYDNEY BUSINESS CENTRE • 4721 5011
How to create the best content for the
ever-changing social media world
There is no doubting the influence
social media can have on your
business, but are you struggling to
market your business?
You may have realised recently that the
organic reach for posts on Facebook and
Instagram are currently very low, which
makes it very hard to compete with other
brands if you are just starting up. So where
to now?
If you are keeping up with the latest trends,
you would have found that video is becoming
more and more important when it comes
to marketing your business.
TikTok/Reels changed the game for a lot of
businesses, and those that made great video
content saw drastic changes in both their
organic reach and interactions.
But what content actually works, and what
is going to get you results?
Here are a few tips/tricks for you next Reel/
TikTok.
Follow the trends
Use the latest trends, music and sounds.
Yes this may be easier said than done, but
the best way to do this is to get scrolling on
Reels and click on ‘Use Template’ and then
add your content. This will literally make the
video for you!
Create original content
Be yourself!
And if you don’t want to be feature in the
video, make sure it’s on your products/
services.
Put content across all socials
If you make a Reel on Instagram, make
sure you also put it on Facebook Reels and
TikTok!
Cover all bases.
Use text
Make sure the text you use is brief and to
the point (summary of what you are speaking
about)
Know your market
This is pivotal!
Use your content to find out what your
audience wants to see and post more of it.
This can be done by looking at your page’s
analytics and seeing what gets the most
interactions/views.
Include hashtags
Three to five will be enough for each post
and make sure they are relevant to the post!
Although TikTok and Reels have a great
organic reach, don’t make the mistake of
marketing there if that’s not where your
clients are. Not every platform is suited for
every business. If you would like to find
out the best ways to market your business
online, please feel free to get in touch at any
time.
It’s a good week to expand your
world via exciting local friendships
and international contacts. If you link
up with like-minded people, then it
will open up new doors of opportunity.
But be careful what you post online,
as a casual comment could lead
to controversy. And expect the sparks
to fly on Sunday when the Full Moon
and Jupiter fire up your adventurous,
spontaneous side. If you must be rebellious,
then aim to be a rebel with a
worthy cause.
With Mercury moving forwards in
your partnership zone, you’ll feel
more motivated to sort out relationship
problems than at other times.
And you have a good chance of success,
especially if you are proactive
about finding solutions and are prepared
to compromise. But money
matters could come to a head on the
weekend when the Full Moon lights
up your financial zone. Maybe it’s
time to boost your cash flow or re-design
your dreams?
Harmonious partnerships and creative
coupledom are highlighted as the
Full Moon and Jupiter (in Aries) plus
the Sun and Venus (in Libra) rev up
relationships and joint ventures. If you
combine diplomacy with dynamism
(and Ram charm with a sense of adventure)
then you’ll sail through challenges.
Balance is the key. Your motto
is from actress Claire Danes (who has
Sun in Aries and Moon in Libra) “Relationships
are a constant negotiation
and balance.”
Expect a rather intense week as the
fiery Full Moon stirs up inner compulsions,
submerged secrets or hidden
resentments. You could also become
obsessed about someone or something
from your complicated past.
If you’re a bright Bull, you’ll learn
from your mistakes, let go and move
on. Inspiration for the week is from
actress Kate Winslet (who turns 47
on Wednesday), “The good and bad
things are what form us as people …
change makes us grow.”
AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
This week the Full Moon focus is on
friendships. How to nurture them,
keep them … and then let them go if
you have outgrown each other. You’ll
find mutual interests are essential
to long-term platonic relationships.
Attached Twins – stop being scatterbrained
and superficial! Mercury
(your patron planet) is moving forwards
again, so your sweetheart is
looking to you for some sensible and
balanced advice. Singles – love and
friendship are linked.
Are you making the most of your
mind? With Pluto and Mercury (which
is now direct) activating your communication
zone, detailed research and
strategic thinking will take you far.
Courtesy of the Full Moon, it’s a good
week to increase your public profile,
complete a professional project, give
a speech, launch a website or start
a social media campaign. But don’t
underestimate the hard work and patience
it will take to keep the wheels of
progress turning.
The Full Moon and Jupiter rev up
your gypsy gene and activate your
adventure zone. So it’s a good time to
escape somewhere special, whether
it’s a much anticipated holiday or a
spontaneous weekend getaway. With
Mercury moving forwards in your
money zone, don’t let fleeting whims
and luxury fever get in the way of longterm
financial planning. Your motto is
from fellow Leo, artist Andy Warhol
“Making money is art and working is
art and good business is the best art.”
Mercury is moving forwards in your
sign so communication, travel and relationships
should all start to improve.
But the big lesson to learn is how to
diversify and delegate. No one (not
even a super effective Virgo) is indispensable.
And expect some dramatic
developments to do with lust or loot,
as the Full Moon stimulates your sex
and money zone. Single? It could be
difficult to differentiate between a
dream date and a disappointing dud
Expect some relationship rumbles,
as the Full Moon stimulates your partnership
zone. Singles – look for love
with an amorous Aries or an adventurous
Aquarius (but don’t let them
walk all over you). If you’re attached,
now is the time to stand up for what
you believe in. Otherwise your proactive
partner could take the reins and
ride the relationship in the direction
and manner they prefer, with little input
from you. A shared vision is vital
for romantic longevity.
You have strong likes and dislikes,
and you don’t do things by halves. Especially
when there’s a Full Moon! You
love to call the shots and be in control,
but you’ll find another ‘c’ word – cooperation
– will get you a lot further,
with less tantrums and tears. Positive
Pluto aspects promise group activities,
intense communication and
powerful conversations. Don’t overthink
things though! As Bill Gates (a
fellow Scorpio) says “Often you have
to rely on intuition.”
The Full Moon and Jupiter light up
your drama zone so expect a week of
extremes – everything from passion
and flamboyance to arguments and
dummy-spits. A troubled teenager or
a feisty friend could push your buttons.
So try to keep your composure,
and don’t give them the satisfaction
of a response! Professional projects
are favoured – as long as you don’t
be a Sagittarian smart-aleck. Listen to
the wise advice of a trusted colleague,
teacher or mentor.
The Sun’s visiting your career zone,
which boosts your ambitious streak.
You’re keen to get ahead but don’t
trample over others on your climb to
the top! Aim to get the balance right
between your personal and professional
lives. Relationships will be
complicated this week when passion
is combined with power plays, and romance
is coupled with responsibility.
So expect some domestic dramas, as
the Full Moon triggers prima donna
moments or a family fiasco.
TALKING TECH
WITH DAVID NORRIS
NORTEC IT • 9894 9514
The best way to improve the strength
of your struggling Wi-Fi connection
A
common question I’m asked is
how to fix up poor Wi-Fi reception
around the home or office. Most
homes and offices still use the Internet
router as their Wi-Fi source. These devices’
primary purpose is to provision the Internet
and not to provide Wi-Fi to your home
or office. They are often located in the
corner of the house and do not have the
signal strength to deliver Wi-Fi throughout
the house.
One solution is to get a Wi-Fi booster
or range extender. These devices pick up
a weak signal and boost it. As a result of
the lower signal, you can expect to get a
decreased speed across the network as a
result. The better solution is to use a Mesh
Wi-Fi system. These systems are designed to
blanket the home or office with overlapping
Wi-Fi signals from multiple devices set up as
a mesh. Mesh systems operate on both the
2.4 and 5Ghz radio bands and, depending
on the solution, can offer throughput speeds
of up to 9.6Gbps.
These devices are generally sold in
packs of three; one of the units connects
to your Internet router and becomes the
central hub. The remaining units, known
as nodes, are plugged into a power point
and will capture and rebroadcast the Wi-Fi
signal. Additional nodes can be purchased
depending on the size and configuration of
your home or office. There is no limit on the
number of nodes that can be added, so the
mesh solution can be expanded as needed.
Mesh Wi-Fi devices are by design userfriendly
and require very little technical
knowledge. A mobile application will guide
you through the installation and advise you
on the nodes’ placement. Most also support
additional features, including parental
controls.
The power of a mesh system is that once
connected to the Wi-Fi, no matter where
you are, your device will switch to the most
robust signal mesh node seamlessly. This
means you have a single SSID, username
and password for the Wi-Fi throughout the
mesh. Even if a node fails, the system will
adjust the mesh accordingly to compensate.
There are multiple providers of meshbased
Wi-Fi systems. These include TP-Link
Deco, Google Nest, Asus ZenWifi, Netgear
Orbi, Dlink Covr and Amazon. These
products can be obtained from your local
computer retailer. Alternatively, call me if
you are struggling with your WiFi.
HEALTH
WITH ERIN BURNS
ONE POINT HEALTH • 4732 5188
Exercise after a knee replacement:
What you need to know and follow!
Sometimes non-surgical treatments can
become no longer helpful in managing
knee pain associated with damage
from conditions such as arthritis or injury.
When pain becomes unmanageable and
simple activities such as walking or climbing
stairs are too difficult, a total knee replacement
(TKR) may be warranted.
Building strength and range prior to TKR
is just as vital as post surgical rehabilitation.
Rehab can start hours after the operation
with an initial focus of range of motion and
strength to return to walking and other
activities of daily living (ADLs).
Normal activities should be able to be
completed within three to six weeks.
But what exercises should take place?
Walking! Build up your walking in small
bouts to slowly increase mobility and independence,
along with ADLs such as household
chores, stair climbing etc.
Strength exercises will improve your ability
to complete such activities to reduce your
limitations.
A physiotherapist or exercise physiologist
will be able to assist you with rehabilitation
and may deliver exercises such as
sit to stands, knee extensions, calf raises,
hamstring curls etc.
Completing walking and strength exercise
develop both aerobic fitness and muscular
strength allowing you to walk for greater
distances, perhaps at a quicker pace, allowing
you to improve functional everyday
activities and can get you back to your usual
routines.
A big fear people may have post surgery is
kneeling, however although uncomfortable
it is not harmful. Most people will be able to
fully straighten and bend their knee enough
to complete activities like stair climbing,
getting into cars and walking with a typical
gait pattern. My take home message both
before and after a TKR, motion is lotion!
Call OnePointHealth on 4732 5188 to book
an appointment to manage your knee pain
prior to or following a knee replacement.
ENTERTAINMENT
MOVIES, TELEVISION, MUSIC AND MORE – PARRAMATTA’S LEADING ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
SO FUNNY YOUR
FACE WILL HURT!
CASSIDY PEARCE
Having revolutionised the ventriloquism
scene in the 1980s,
David Strassman is no doubt
one of the biggest names in the
industry.
Though David notes his characters have
changed over time, audience members will
see this happen in real time, in his new show,
‘The Chocolate Diet’.
“The Chocolate Diet is pretty much all about
our addictions in our lives, that we are pretty
much slaves to,” he said.
“For example, Ted E. Bare is addicted to
chocolate, and in this show, he goes through
some pretty drastic transitions and transformations.
He gained a couple stone during
COVID, and he decided to go on a diet, but he
comes back so impossibly thin that his ribs are
showing, and that’s a whole funny routine.
“From that, he decides to eat again and he
comes back impossibly obese, he has folds on
folds, and so, it’s Ted E.’s journey, but we all experience
that.”
His latest production is one of his biggest
yet, including special effects, music, and a set
to die for.
“It’s an amazing production, I have these
massive sets, giant stacks of chocolate Krispy
Kreme doughnuts and stacks of Tim Tams
covered in chocolate sauce, and these massive
banners of Sunday roasts and burgers with the
lot,” he said.
“It’s just a place of the most delicious food
as the backdrop of the set, and then all my
other puppets that are going through personality
and identity crises which are absolutely
shocking and hilarious at the same time.”
But, there’s no doubt that the show will feature
David’s trademark humour that will have
you in stitches.
“My show is a laugh every 10 seconds,” he
said.
“I do so much local material and local humour
– I’ll be making fun of everybody.”
David is currently on a two-month long tour
of his second home in Australia, including
a whopping five dates at Penrith Panthers,
which are already on track to sell out. But, it’s
not just the shows he’s looking forward to for
when he makes his way west.
“Penrith is absolutely amazing, we love it. It’s
one of the most beautiful clubs in Sydney, in
all of New South Wales. It’s like you’re going to
Vegas or something!” he said.
“Plus, the food options around Panthers is
awesome. When you’re traveling and you have
shite food options, it doesn’t really make for a
good time, so I’m pleased it’s really gone off
in Penrith.”
As for who will enjoy this show, David is
promising a good time for all.
“If you love chocolate you’re going to love
this show,” he said.
“It’s a great night out, your face will be hurting
after my show.”
David Strassman’s ‘The Chocolate Diet’
will be on at the EVAN Theatre from October
15. Tickets are $54.35. For more information,
At the movies...
REVIEW
Bodies Bodies Bodies

1 hour, 35 minutes
Everything is working against ‘Bodies
Bodies Bodies’ when deciding what
movie you might want to see over the
weekend. Granted, it looks a little tacky
and the trailer doesn’t provide a lot of
hope.
But while it’s not exactly family entertainment,
this horror / whodunit is a
really entertaining ride that refuses to
take itself too seriously while providing
a running commentary on Gen Z.
The film opens with a very passionate
kiss (and I mean very) between two
young women – almost a declaration
from the very beginning that director
Halina Reijn isn’t afraid test boundaries
with her audience.
Those snoggers are Sophie (Amandla
Stenberg) and Bee (Maria Bakalova),
the first of a group of friends we meet
who are gathering for a house party
while a serious storm unfolds outside.
When the group plays a murder mystery
game, things take a turn – you
guessed it, the game becomes more
than just a bit of fun as some real deaths
start to mount up.
Along the way we tackle all the big
Gen Z issues – led by lack of mobile
phone signal, though things do get
somewhat deeper than that as mental
health and the fragility of relationships
becomes part of the conversation.
The pay-off after 90 minutes of blood,
gore and a few shocks to the system is
a very clever ending that you probably
won’t see coming.
– Troy Dodds
Pro-Am to tee off at new course
NATHAN TAYLOR
Golfers across Sydney are gearing up
to tee off at the Cumberland Golf
Pro-Am Tournament being held on
October 6 and 7 in Guildford.
Players of all ages and abilities will be able to
show off their skills as they go toe to toe with
top professionals on the circuit at Woodville
Golf Course.
The event will be held over two days, the
first day will be open to junior players from
ages 12 to 16 years and the second day will
see amateurs aged 18 and above take over the
greens.
Cumberland City Council Mayor, Lisa Lake,
said the tournament is a great opportunity to
showcase the outstanding golf courses and
recent upgrades including the completion of
the 7th hole at Woodville Golf Course.
“This is a great opportunity to raise the
profile of Council-owned golf courses,
particularly with the new 7th hole,” she said.
“The Woodville Golf Course is a premium
playing space with Council laying down
10,000m2 of new turf and significant path
works at Woodville, so players will be in for a
grand experience.”
PGA representative and Tournament Coordinator,
Peter Weldon, said the tournament is
a great experience for players of all levels.
“This is the first tournament we’ve been able
to put on since COVID restrictions. It’ll be
Cumberland Mayor Lisa Lake and Councillor Paul Garrard.
good to see a bit of normalcy return to such an
important event for golf players,” he said.
“The tournament is a great opportunity
for younger players to get a sense of what a
professional PGA tournament looks and feels
like. Having such passionate players coming
together to improve in their skills can lead
to them maybe one day becoming part of
Australia’s top players.”
The Cumberland Golf Pro-Am Tournament
will be held this Thursday, October 6 and
Friday, October 7 at Woodville Golf Course in
Guildford.
