Final bell soon to ring for
long-serving school principal
• By Tatiana Gibbs
LONG-SERVING principal
Stephen Harrison will no longer
be ruled by ringing bells and
school holidays, retiring from
Cotswold Mātāhae School after a
lengthy 25-year tenure at the end
of this school year.
From spearheading the school
through its earthquake rebuild,
to cycling schoolwork to homebound
students during Covid-19
lockdowns, Harrison is leaving
“big shoes to fill,” associate
principal Paula Fleming-Connell
said.
“Stephen is very caring,
forward thinking, inspirational,
and it will be a really emotional
time when he leaves,” she said.
Cotswold Mātāhae teacher
Samantha Cade was a student at
the school herself and has been
teaching three years now with
her old principal as her boss.
“I remember back when we
would win sports games, we’d
all come into his office and get a
fruit burst and it was really fun,”
Cade said.
“He always remembers who we
are too.”
Cade is one of thousands of
pupils Harrison has had through
his school, a feat that still leaves
him dumbfounded when he runs
into past students as adults.
“We’re enrolling grandchildren
of children I’ve taught or
who have been here themselves,
and that’s quite scary,” Harrison
said.
Harrison now feels it’s the
right time to pass on the role to
RETIRING: Principal Stephen Harrison will finish at Cotswold Mātāhae School at the end of the school year.
the next person, having seen the
school through its 10-year earthquake
rebuild – now equipped
with a brand-new playground
that Harrison proudly took the
first slide down.
“Part of my focus was to see
the build through to a point that
I was giving the school back in a
better place than I received it and
I’m comfortable with that.”
The school role has grown
from 382 pupils when Harrison
first started 25 years ago, to now
560, which is expected to grow
to just shy of 600 students by the
end of the year.
Dunedin’s Wakari Primary
School principal Chris Smith
has been appointed as Harrison’s
replacement.
“I was sitting here, welcoming
each candidate for that interview,
and thinking that it was
only yesterday I was doing that
myself,” Harrison said.
“It’s been amazing, it’s flown
by and we’re very fortunate that
we’ve got an amazing community
we serve here.”
The first plans on the agenda
for the keen fisherman are
to wait until “it’s not school
holidays, and the rivers and lakes
have been flogged dry” to take
his new caravan out for a spin.
YOUNG GARDENERS: Rita O’Connell, 8, is part of the children’s gardening group that has partnered with Enable. Right – Edith O’Connell, 3, gets stuck in.
Garden project is growing community
COMMUNITY-owned fibre
broadband provider Enable has
partnered with a local children’s
gardening group to grow flower
gardens.
Enable’s Hills Rd office had a
large area of its site unused. As it
is deemed a commercial site, the
possible uses for the land were
limited.
A local children’s gardening
group, which already tends to
the Shirley Community Garden,
jumped at the possibility of adding
another garden to its roster.
The children recently planted
flowers in the planter boxes
provided and will maintain the
site.
Enable chief executive Johnathan
Eele believes the partnership
has a great fit with the
company’s community focus.
“As Enable are 100 per cent
owned by the people of Christchurch,
we were keen to find a way
of utilising our site to benefit our
people,” he said.
“We put the call out to the
local community, and we are
excited to be able to partner with
local children in a project that
helps not only beautify the area,
but also provides a skill-set such
a gardening.”
Resident Emma O’Connell,
who is involved in the gardening
group along with her two daughters,
said: “The opportunity to
plant and grow the garden from
the bare soil, with support from
Enable, was exciting for the
children. They learn such great
skills and feel very proud of the
contribution they make to the
community.”
Enable is looking at whether
a similar initiative can be rolled
out at any of its other central
office sites.
Students’ small business tackles drink driving
• By Kate Paterson
SIX CHRISTCHURCH Girls’
High School students are raising
awareness around the dangers
of drink driving by creating and
selling car air fresheners.
Year 13 students Prue McKay,
Sasha Linton, Lucy Lassche-
Jones, Zara Coberger-Taite,
Abagail Patrick and Phoebe
Yarham have launched their
small business Ghost Chips,
named after the iconic road
safety advertisement by Waka
Kotahi NZ Transport Agency,
which started in 2011.
THeir brand targets teenagers,
encouraging young people to be
safe on our roads, and is part of
the Young Enterprise Scheme.
Said Prue: “Teenagers, especially,
don’t seem to see the
issue with drunk driving. Too
often [they think] it’s cool and
they don’t understand what’s on
the line. We wanted to try and
prevent it.”
She hopes that having the air
fresheners hanging in cars will
remind young people of the message
behind Ghost Chips.
“Air fresheners are something
that can stay hanging in their
cars for a while, reminding people
of the cause,” Prue said.
Ghost Chips is also on social
media platforms Facebook,
Instagram and TikTok, where it
posts ‘Fact Fridays’.
Every Friday the group posts
ENTREPRENEURS: Zara Coberger-Taite, Phoebe Yarham, Lucy Lassche-Jones, Abagail Patrick, Prue Mckay, Sasha Linton are
tackling drink driving by creating and selling car air fresheners.
information and statistics about
drunk driving to raise awareness
around the impact that alcohol
has on our roads.
Abagail said: “At this point in
our lives we are all starting to
get our licences and learn how to
drive, but we overlook how dangerous
driving can be. If we can
get the message to teenagers then
maybe we can start to create
awareness around safe driving.”
The girls recently had an opportunity
to sell some of their
air fresheners in Ballantynes,
and have even had online orders
placed in Australia.
Moving forward, they hope
to expand their business by
creating different scents to add
to their collection, all while
continuing to create awareness
around safe driving.
The students are currently
in the evaluation stage of their
project; they will be competing
with Ghost Chips in the regional
finals against other Young Enterprise
Scheme contestants on
November 2.
Colour-separated glass trial under way
HUNDREDS OF thousands of
glass bottles and jars could get a
second chance at life thanks to a
colour-separated glass trial that’s
under way in Christchurch.
For the next three months,
EcoCentral – in partnership
with Christchurch glass recycling
company 5R Solutions – is
trialling a colour-separated glass
collection at its Parkhouse transfer
station.
Residents dropping off glass
bottles and jars will be asked to
separate them into three colours
– brown, clear and green.
From there it will be made
new again – 5R Solutions will
collect and store the glass, before
sending it to Auckland manufacturing
company Visy to be made
into new bottles.
5R Solutions founder Chris
Grant says the trial is a great first
step towards a more sustainable
Christchurch.
“A lot of people think that
when they put glass in their
yellow recycling bin it’s going to
be made into shiny new bottles
– that’s simply not the case,” he
says.
In Christchurch, glass recycled
at kerbside is crushed and used
for road fill.
“At that point the glass is gone,
it’s lost forever,” Grant said.
Separating glass into colours
prior to the recycling process
opens the door to much greater
opportunities and a far better
outcome, he says.
“The thing about glass is that
it’s infinitely recyclable – glass
bottles and jars can be recycled
over and over, with no loss of
quality or purity.”
Glass is made from sand, so
replacing old bottles with new
ones means that more sand
needs to be taken from beaches
and rivers.
“Dropping off your glass to
EcoDrop Parkhouse is a great
way to look after our precious
natural resources while supporting
the circular economy in
action,” Grant said.
5R processes around 14,000
TRIAL: Chris
Grant at
EcoCentral
where glass
will be sorted
into colours
and recycled
to be made
new again.
tonnes of glass each year from
councils across the South Island.
Being Christchurch born and
raised, Grant says he’s pleased to
be part of the solution for local
residents.
“This is a golden opportunity
for Christchurch to join other
cities across Aotearoa that have
already realised the benefits of a
back-to-glass recycling system.”
A $37,500 grant from the Glass
Packaging Forum provided Eco-
Central with enough funding to
get the trial under way.
EcoCentral operations manager
Rob Wilson says the team is
always looking at ways to maximise
the lifespan and value of
products and materials received,
including glass.
“The longer we keep glass in
circulation, the better we look after
our environment. That’s what
this trial is all about – trying to
find the most sustainable and
effective ways of avoiding waste
going to landfill.”
“While the trial is under way,
we will also be conducting a
lifecycle analysis of all the options
for post-consumer glass to
determine the best approach for
now and the future.”
If the trial is successful,
EcoCentral will consider implementing
the new glass flow
at other transfer stations across
Christchurch.
5R Solutions is a
Christchurch-based
company specialising in
glass recovery.
Since establishing in 2009
the company has stopped
over 50,000 tonnes of
glass from going to landfill
every year by processing
it so it can be used again
(this is the equivalent of 22
Olympic-sized swimming
pools or nearly 230,000
wheelie bins).
4 Steps to Get Ready for Kitchen Renovations
There are two actions that come to
mind as being the most important when
getting ready for a construction project:
avoid denial and prepare. Everything you
need to do falls under one of these two
categories. But how, specifically, can you
prepare for the first day of construction?
night, you’ll want a place to make a cup of
coffee or a snack.
I think two tables are ideal, and if you
have the room, two tables plus the
kitchen table for seating. If you don’t have
an old table, pick up a few folding tables
that can serve as both dining spaces and
usable benchtops. If you’re using a nice
Here are the basic steps.
1. Make a list of items you need
on-site when construction
begins
Have you ordered your kitchen sink
and tap? Do you have your appliance
deliveries scheduled? The reason for
having a list of items and a renovation
timeline is that once building works start,
life gets a little more chaotic – well, a lot
more chaotic. Tasks such as ordering a
sink can slip through your fingers, and
you’ll find yourself scrambling when your
builder asks for something if you’re not
prepared with a schedule.
2. Establish expectations with
your trades
This isn’t just about telling your designer,
builder and tradespeople what you
expect, this is also about your builder
and other professionals giving you
realistic expectations. This will make
you a happier client and ensure a more
pleasant process overall.
As the homeowner, you have some
control over the renovation schedule.
Taking too long to finalise decisions can
cause significant delays.
• How long construction will last.
• Consider what you can do personally
to guard against delays. Often this
means having all the products onsite
and not making changes.
• Dust control. How will the
construction be sectioned off from
the rest of the house?
• Debris removal. Are you getting a
skip bin, or will debris be stored in
the garage and removed in phases?
• Areas the crew can use. What will
be the staging area for tools, cutting
timber and tiles? What bathroom
facilities will and won’t be available
for your trades?
• Clean-up expectations. Some trades
clean up at the end of each day and
others don’t. Communicate what
you want but also understand that
certain requests may mean more
time and expense.
• When you have to be out of the
house for refinishing the floors, how
long will this take and what products
will be used? Do they meet your
expectations of low-VOC emissions?
• What hours can the crew work
and can they work on Saturdays?
Arrange to provide them with the
essentials, such as keys and alarm
codes.
table from the house, get a plastic-coated
tablecloth to protect it.
Think about setting up your temporary
kitchen the way you would a real kitchen,
in stations.
Don’t forget to be nice to the neighbours
and ask your trades to do the same. Let
your neighbours know you’re starting a
construction project and that there will
be crews around. Tell them to please
let you know if they have issues. Noise,
debris and blocking the street with
deliveries are often issues that come up
with neighbours.
Set up a recurring weekly construction
meeting to touch base with your builder
and other professionals. You may not
need it every week, but at least it’s on the
schedule in case you do.
Here are some things to consider and
discuss with your builder:
3. Empty your cabinets
Now that you’ve taken care of business,
it’s time to get your hands dirty. Rather
than dreading this, look at it as an
opportunity to do some serious spring
cleaning. Instead of throwing everything
in a bunch of boxes and deferring the
editing process to the end, get it done
now to make moving back in that much
more fun. However, if you have too much
on your plate to deal with this now, it can
always be done later.
Put all the items you won’t need for a
few months into boxes – or even better,
big plastic storage containers with lids to
protect the contents from dirt and dust.
Separate out what you’ll want to use in
your temporary kitchen: knives, coffee
mugs, food you’ll eat and even a few wine
glasses. Who says you have to drink out
of plastic cups the whole time?
4. Set up a temporary kitchen
The more organised and prepared you
are in this area, the happier you’ll be. A
half-hearted attempt at a temporary
kitchen isn’t recommended. Even if you
don’t have kids and plan to eat out every
