INTRODUCING GREENLIGHT FUND’S NEWEST PORTFOLIO MEMBER, CHILD FIRST! THE CHILD FIRST MODEL The Child First approach is unique in combining comprehensive, coordinated services, psychotherapeutic intervention for child and caregiver, and increasing adult self-regulation and executive functioning in a single model, resulting in long-term positive outcomes for children and families through all stages of development. $600k GREENLIGHT INVESTMENT + $2.4 M LEVERAGED LAUNCH INVESTMENT + ROBUST PARTNERSHIPS = Child First is expected to serve 3,000+ children and families over their first 4 Years Services are conducted in the home with the child, parents or other primary caregivers, and other family members by a clinical team of a Mental Health Clinician and a Care Coordinator. The Child First intervention targets those families experiencing the most complex, intersecting adversities, decreases stress within the family, increases stability, facilitates connection to growth-promoting services, and supports the development of healthy, nurturing, protective relationships. CHILD-PARENT INTERVENTION Child First provides Child-Parent Psychotherapy which helps build a nurturing, responsive, and safe caregiver-child relationship. This protects the child’s developing brain from the damage of chronic stress, helps heal the effects of trauma and adversity for both child and parent, and promotes strong emotional health and cognitive growth. EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING Child First partners with parents and caregivers to strengthen executive function and selfregulation, which shape our abilities to plan ahead, focus attention, remember details, control impulses, and juggle multiple tasks. This sets up caregivers to best nurture the child’s development of these same skills and provide a safe, growthenhancing environment. INTENSIVE CARE COORDINATION Child First helps directly decrease the stress experienced by the family members by helping them to identify, navigate, and connect with comprehensive communitybased services and supports, leading to family stabilization, decreased stress, and utilization of growth-enhancing community resources. 6 GLF Golf 2022 Program 09.22.indd 6 9/25/22 12:30 PM
Child First Works Child First is a national, evidence-based, two-generation model created in Connecticut to address toxic stress and trauma in historically under-resourced families with young children. Child First aims to prevent emotional disturbance, developmental problems, abuse, and neglect through psychotherapeutic intervention, intensive care coordination, and enhancement of executive function. In a randomized control trial completed in 2011, Child Firstʼs interventions show substantial improvements across multiple domains: 46% decrease in child behavioral problems 68% decrease in language delays in children 64% lower levels of depression and/or mental health problems in mothers 39% of families were less likely to be involved with child protective services 98% increase in families accessing community services and support Plans for Boston The Child First Boston expansion will be driven by the community. Over the next year, four affiliate agencies will be selected and trained in the Child First approach. With $2.4M already committed outside of GreenLight’s investment, and robust partnerships in early childhood and mental health, Child First is expected to serve 3,000+ children and families over their first four years. MISSION Child First helps to heal and protect young children and families from the effects of chronic stress MEET THE FOUNDER Dr. Darcy Lowell, Chief Child First & Mental Health Officer Dr. Darcy Lowell is a developmental & behavioral pediatrician, founder, and Chief Child First and Mental Health Officer at Child First. In 2001, Dr. Lowell founded Child First to heal and protect very young children and families from the impact of trauma and adversity. Dr. Lowell’s work with families affected by social and economic inequality focuses on the power of early, responsive relationships to prevent the damaging effects of trauma and early adversity.
