<strong>Looking</strong> <strong>Ahead</strong>’ because anything can happen when<br />

the Dawgs and Gators take the field in Jacksonville<br />

Before I jump into the Dawgs<br />

annual clash with the Gators,<br />

thoughts and prayers go out<br />

to the family of the legendary Charley<br />

Trippi, who at age 100 passed last<br />

week in Athens. Mr. Trippi’s prowess<br />

in athletics (both collegiate and professional) was on par<br />

with the great olympian Jim Thorpe. Of course, Bulldog fans<br />

appreciated Trippi most for his spectacular accomplishments<br />

while at our beloved University. Again, everyone at Bulldawg<br />

Illustrated sends our condolences and we look forward<br />

to bringing our readers a special tribute in our next issue<br />

(Georgia-Tennessee).<br />

Back to Georgia-Florida … it’s sort of ironic that this issue’s<br />

cover is all about reminding everyone in Bulldog Nation not<br />

to look past the Gators (to the Vols’ visit to Athens in two<br />

Saturdays), when low and behold I just did it myself in the<br />

above paragraph. However, I will give myself a pass because<br />

it was necessary to let folks know when to expect our special<br />

send-off to one of the greatest Bulldogs ever.<br />

Unfortunately, in my opinion, too many smart Bulldog fans<br />

(that I have run into over the last week or so) are already<br />

champing at the bit for the Tennessee game, while discounting<br />

the game on this week’s schedule. You expect that from fans,<br />

but you can bet Kirby Smart is also fighting hard to remind his<br />

players that the marquee Bulldogs-Volunteers game will lose<br />

a lot of its luster, if they don’t show up in Jacksonville 100%<br />

focused versus the Florida Gators.<br />

With this cover of BI and the awesome photo of Darnell<br />

Washington (No. 0), I feel our magazine has done its part to<br />

remind the Bulldog Nation … ‘0 (<strong>Zero</strong>) <strong>Looking</strong> <strong>Ahead</strong>’ against<br />

the 2022 Gators.<br />

Yours truly was a mere 13-year-old in 1985 when mighty<br />

Florida arrived to the Gator Bowl sporting the No. 1 ranking<br />

in the country. When the final whistle sounded, they left the<br />

banks of the St. Johns River dragging their deflated tails back<br />

to Gainesville with a 24-3 loss to the Dawgs.<br />

The above history lesson goes out to any Georgia fans<br />

that think the impossible can’t happen. No doubt about it,<br />

Florida can make their season (under first year head coach<br />

Billy Napier) by upsetting one of their most hated rivals on<br />

Saturday.<br />

Nonetheless, even with my inner most Munson brewing, I<br />

have faith that Coach Smart, his team leaders and everyone on<br />

the Georgia sideline will arrive to Jacksonville with their game<br />

faces on.<br />

There is another reason I chose The Big O (Darnell<br />

Washington) for this cover. Washington is Georgia’s most<br />

menacing looking player and amplifies there is no denying the<br />

2022 Dawgs have a substantial size and depth advantage over<br />

the 2022 Gators. Also, simply look at the two teams tight end<br />

units. Georgia has four to five players that would start on most<br />

teams in the SEC. Finally, don’t miss Jeff Dantzler’s A View From<br />

Jacksonville (page 24) with broadcaster Frank Frangie. The<br />

longtime broadcaster (who while encouraged by Florida’s hire<br />

in Napier) predicts Georgia winning the game 41-24. “There<br />

is a gulf between these two teams right now,” Frangie said. “I<br />

can’t imagine it being much closer than that.”<br />

Still, even though the depth gap is vast, I head into Saturday’s<br />

game wide open in knowing that anything can happen in<br />

Jacksonville. Be ready Dawg fans … ‘0 (<strong>Zero</strong>) <strong>Looking</strong> <strong>Ahead</strong>.’<br />

This 80-page issue (plus plenty of shopping, eating and<br />

libations in the Golden Isles) should help pass the time<br />

between now and when toe meets leather on Saturday.<br />

On the sports front, I love that (on page 77) Kevin Butler’s<br />

Players of the Game (from the Vandy game) are all freshmen.<br />

That says a lot about the above-mentioned depth within the<br />

Georgia football program. And Hamilton Culpepper is back in<br />

this issue with a stellar interview with former Dawg roverback<br />

John Little (page 72). A big congrats to both John and Champ<br />

Bailey who are the two Georgia players being inducted into<br />

the Georgia-Florida Hall of Fame on Friday. Also, former BI<br />

writer Murray Poole came out of retirement again for me<br />

(pages 71, 72) in this issue to pen a review of Loran Smith’s<br />

book “Return to Glory.”<br />

On the social front, you can’t fill 80 pages of content without<br />

a ton of fan photos. This issue (beginning on page 30), the<br />

BI camera delivers from the Vandy game to the Bulldog<br />

Open to the Presidents Club reception. On pages 28 and 29,<br />

enjoy getting to know this issue’s Georgia Girl, Lillian Owen<br />

Magruder. Her fond memories of UGA Tennis camps with<br />

Coach Magill, Diaz and Wallace combined with her favorite<br />

quote being Kirby’s halftime speech from last year’s Georgia-<br />

Florida game make her a keeper in my book.<br />

Then on page 68, Savannahian Pierce Cannon will<br />

definitely hit home with 912ers when he calls his greatest<br />

accomplishment being when he held Glynn Academy (No. 1<br />

pick in the NBA) super star Kwame Brown to six points during<br />

his high school basketball days. Finally, Loran Smith continues<br />

our Bulldogs of the 4th Estate series (page 67) reminding our<br />

readers (including myself) that longtime Bulldog radio man<br />

(before Larry Munson) Ed Thilenius cut his teeth as a writer<br />

for the Athens Banner-Herald. Long live the scribes and print<br />

journalism.<br />

Whoa, I’m dazed from writing this note to include all the<br />

content in this 80-page whopper. I am so glad I had the bye<br />

week, which also afforded me the opportunity to celebrate<br />

my mother’s (Sudy Vance Leavy) 80th and my good friend’s<br />

(Jeff Ramsey) 50th. Just like the tradition of the Georgia-<br />

Florida game being in Jacksonville, nothing beats quality time<br />

with family and friends. Just don’t forget … ‘0 (<strong>Zero</strong>) <strong>Looking</strong><br />

<strong>Ahead</strong>.’ See you in the Golden Isles for pre-game and Saturday<br />

in Jacksonville for another battle with the jort-wearing reptiles.<br />

Forever SEC foes’ fans relished in reminding the Bulldog Nation<br />

that 1980 was Georgia’s last national championship, but that<br />

narrative is dead with Kirby’s Dawgs doing the talk on the field<br />

Georgia is heading to<br />

Jacksonville atop the polls<br />

with a perfect 7-0 record as the<br />

reigning national champions of<br />

college football. Florida is 4-3 with losses<br />

to Kentucky, Tennessee and LSU. The<br />

Gators led in all three of those games. The<br />

Bulldogs have beaten Oregon. Florida has<br />

topped Utah.<br />

So many times in the 20th century, the<br />

winner of this game has had the inside<br />

track to a berth in the Southeastern<br />

Conference Championship Game. In fact,<br />

in the last 20 SEC title tilts, Georgia or<br />

Florida have appeared in Atlanta as the<br />

winner of the East Division 15 times. The<br />

Bulldogs have won the SEC East nine<br />

times dating back to 2002, while Florida<br />

has been to the Georgia Dome/Mercedes<br />

Benz Stadium on six occasions over that<br />

stretch. Georgia, interestingly, suffered<br />

gut-punch losses to the Gators in 2002,<br />

2003 and 2005, which proved costly in<br />

the pursuit of the national championship,<br />

but those three Bulldog teams all found<br />

their way to the SEC Championship<br />

Game, capturing the league crown in<br />

2002 and 2005. But that’s an anomaly.<br />

It’s been the Bulldogs or Gators in<br />

Atlanta for seven consecutive years, with<br />

the Gators winning in Jacksonville and<br />

advancing out of the East in 2015, 2016<br />

and 2020. Georgia has played for the SEC<br />

title in four of the last five seasons, with<br />

Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs topping the Gators<br />

en route to Mercedes Benz in 2017,<br />

2018, 2019 and 2021. In 2017, 2018 and<br />

2019, the Bulldogs posted 11-1 regular<br />

seasons, while going 12-0 a year ago.<br />

The Dogs won the SEC championship<br />

and Rose Bowl in the College Football<br />

Playoff in 2017. Georgia fell in de facto<br />

national quarterfinal games in 2018 and<br />

2019, costing the Bulldogs a shot at the<br />

national title. Last season, the Dogs lost<br />

in Atlanta, but earned a berth in the CFP<br />

and defeated Michigan in the Orange<br />

Bowl and Alabama in the National<br />

Championship Game to capture college<br />

football’s ultimate prize.<br />

No longer can arch rival fan bases, who’s<br />

schools have been dominated by the<br />

Bulldogs, significantly in the glory-laden<br />

Smart era, tease the Georgia faithful<br />

about how long it had been since the<br />

program’s most recent national title.<br />

Georgia has beaten Auburn 15 of the<br />

last 18 times. Under Smart’s watch, dating<br />

back to the revenge victory over the<br />

Tigers in the 2017 SEC Championship<br />

Game, the Bulldogs have won six in a<br />

row over Auburn. That includes a 42-10<br />

victory over Auburn earlier this month at<br />

Sanford Stadium, an eighth consecutive<br />

win in the series of the Tigers Between<br />

the Hedges. Bryan Harsin, whose seat<br />

is mighty warm, is the second Auburn<br />

coach to square off against Smart since<br />

2017.<br />

Following the Gators this weekend,<br />

Georgia will host Tennessee. The<br />

Bulldogs have won five in a row over the<br />

Volunteers under Smart’s watch, and 10<br />

of the last 12 dating to the Mark Richt era.<br />

In the Vols two wins in 2015 and 2016,<br />

Georgia blew a 24-3 lead in Knoxville,<br />

and then were upended by the Hail Mary<br />

at Sanford Stadium. Josh Heupel has<br />

Tennessee soaring again. He is the third<br />

Volunteers head coach Smart has faced.<br />

Since 2001, the Bulldogs are 17-3<br />

against the Yellow Jackets. Oh how it<br />

could be 20 in a row. There was no game<br />

between the two in-state arch enemies in<br />

2020 due to conference only scheduling<br />

in the SEC. Georgia is on a four game<br />

winning streak against Tech, outpointing<br />

the North Avenue Trade School 180-<br />

35 over that stretch. With Geoff Collins<br />

ousting - he never coached Between<br />

the Hedges and his Tech teams lost by a<br />

cumulative 97-7 total in 2019 and 2021<br />

- interim head man Brent Key will be the<br />

third Yellow Jackets head coach to square<br />

off against Smart’s Dogs when the two<br />

meet the Saturday after Thanksgiving.<br />

Paul Johnson, (Collins’ predecessor) went<br />

3-3 versus Georgia at Sanford Stadium.<br />

There was a great sense of relief not<br />

having to prepare for that equalizing<br />

triple option.<br />

And then there are the Gators.<br />

From 1990-2010, Florida went 18-3<br />

against Georgia. Ouch. Ouch. Ouch. There<br />

were a lot of long rides home from the<br />

Golden Isles for two decades. Georgia<br />

had won 15 of the previous 19, but then<br />

Steve Spurrier arrived and times changed.<br />

The tables turned some following Urban<br />

Meyer’s departure from Gainesville, as<br />

Mark Richt’s Bulldogs won three in a row<br />

from 2011-2013. But then Florida would<br />

win three straight, including a 2014 upset<br />

coached by current Bulldogs co-defensive<br />

coordinator Will Muschamp. Once Smart<br />

got the Bulldogs machine rolling in 2017,<br />

things turned back Georgia’s way. A 42-7<br />

rout of the Gators showed Jim McElwain<br />

the door. Dan Mullen came on board and<br />

Florida went to major bowls in ‘18 and<br />

‘19 after falling to Georgia. The Gators<br />

beat the Bulldogs in 2020 and were<br />

on the way to the SEC Championship<br />

Game and another major bowl. He<br />

once had the attendance of the Florida<br />

spring game announced as a total<br />

corresponding to how many days it had<br />

been since the Bulldogs 1980 national<br />

championship.<br />

But a thrown shoe against LSU started<br />

a tremendous ripple effect. Georgia has<br />

won 25 of 26 games since, while things<br />

went south for the Gators. The Bulldogs<br />

34-7 victory over the Gators last season<br />

dropped the tenure of Dan Mullen, who<br />

lost his final four SEC games as Florida’s<br />

head coach, five and a half feet under.<br />

Now Billy Napier is Florida’s head coach,<br />

the third that Smart has squared off<br />

against. If the Gators win, that would<br />

be two of three in the series, a win in<br />

Napier’s Jacksonville debut, a big jolt<br />

for Florida and a dagger to the Bulldogs<br />

championship hopes.<br />

Meanwhile, it’s a chance for Georgia to<br />

make it 8-0 on the season, keep those<br />

championship dreams thriving and<br />

make it five of six against the Gators.<br />

Plus, it would start Napier off with a<br />

losing record in the series. That is very<br />

important. It’s hard to go uphill in this<br />

series. Losses to Ron Zook’s Gators in<br />

2002 and 2003 left lasting scars for Richt’s<br />

Bulldogs.<br />

But last season’s national title exorcized<br />

a lot of demons.<br />

Now with the glow of that National<br />

Championship crown beaming for the<br />

Georgia faithful, the Bulldog aim to<br />

further a march to glory in 2022 and<br />

continue some wonderful trends against<br />

arch-nemesis who can’t scream 1980 as a<br />

falling insult.<br />

The stage is set for another colossal showdown between<br />

old rivals, as Georgia and Florida renew one of college<br />

football’s grand rivalries Saturday from the banks of the<br />

mighty St. Johns River in Jacksonville.<br />

Both teams, as usual, are coming off open dates.<br />

Georgia is riding high. The reigning national champions<br />

head into the game with a perfect 7-0 record, and 4-0 mark<br />

in Southeastern Conference play. Since losing to the Gators<br />

in 2020, Georgia has won 25 of its last 26 games.<br />

Last time out, the Bulldogs rolled over Vanderbilt 55-0 at<br />

Sanford Stadium. It was a second straight impressive margin<br />

- Georgia defeated Auburn 42-10 in Athens the week prior<br />

- since Georgia survived a bona fide upset scare, escaping<br />

with a 26-22 win over Missouri.<br />

Georgia navigated the first half of the schedule unscathed.<br />

The Bulldogs have done so while suffering through a slew<br />

of injuries to several top flight players, who have missed<br />

significant action. With the open date, the Bulldogs are<br />

hopeful of getting some of those injured players back for<br />

the clash with Florida, which begins a true gauntlet of major<br />

tests for the defending champs.<br />

Florida is 4-3 on the season, 1-3 in SEC play, in Billy Napier’s<br />

first season as the Gators head coach. The Gators are coming<br />

off a 45-35 shootout loss to LSU in the swamp. One week<br />

earlier, that same Missouri team that nearly upset the<br />

Bulldogs, fell to Florida 24-17 in Gainesville. That win over<br />

the Mizzou Tigers broke a string of six straight SEC losses<br />

dating back to last season. That includes a 34-7 Georgia<br />

victory over Dan Mullen’s Gators in Jacksonville.<br />

Under Kirby Smart’s watch, Georgia has won four of the last<br />

five meetings against Florida. In each of those four years that<br />

the Bulldogs won in Jacksonville, Smart’s Dogs advanced<br />

to the Southeastern Conference Championship Game. The<br />

last team to have such a run of success out of the SEC East<br />

was Florida under Steve Spurrier’s watch in the 1990s. The<br />

Coach guided Florida to the first five SEC Championship<br />

Games from 1992-1996.<br />

Napier will be the third different Florida coach to square<br />

off against Smart’s Bulldogs. They coached together as<br />

assistants for Nick Saban at Alabama, including the Crimson<br />

Tide’s 2015 national title team.<br />

Georgia is still in the thick of everything, once again<br />

dreaming big, while Florida will try to play spoiler, jumpstart<br />

the second half of the season and get a signature SEC upset<br />

win. This is the most talented SEC opponent the Bulldogs<br />

have faced this season. Though Florida’s record isn’t what<br />

the Gainesville faithful had hoped for thus far in Napier’s first<br />

year, funny things happen in Jacksonville, so Smart knows<br />

his Bulldogs will have to be at their best to secure a victory<br />

over this long time nemesis.<br />

BULLDOGS TO WATCH<br />

STETSON BENNETT (QB #13) - Bennett started the Vanderbilt<br />

game completing 18 for his first 20 pass attempts, before finishing<br />

24/30 for 289 yards and two TDs. Prior to the Vanderbilt game,<br />

Bennett had a three game passing-TD drought. Florida’s defense is<br />

formidable and the Dawgs will need a healthy Bennett distributing<br />

the ball to a multitude of weapons to be at their best against the<br />

Gators. Hitting a few deep balls would be a refreshing sight and<br />

would really open up the potential of this offense.<br />

BEAR ALEXANDER<br />

DEFENSIVE TACKLE<br />

AD MITCHELL (WR #5) - Mitchell has missed significant time<br />

after a seemingly innocuous ankle injury in the first series against<br />

Samford in the second game of the season. The hope is that<br />

Mitchell is being held out in an effort to get him fully healthy for a<br />

tough stretch run against Florida, Tennessee, Mississippi State and<br />

Kentucky. If Mitchell can return to the form as witnessed against<br />

Oregon, which included four receptions for 65 yards and a TD, the<br />

Dawgs should be even more dynamic in their passing attack against<br />

the Gators.<br />

DARNELL WASHINGTON (TE #0) - Washington is often<br />

the undervalued “other tight end” that gets overshadowed by<br />

the hyper-athletic Brock Bowers. Despite his mammoth size,<br />

Washington is plenty athletic himself, as evidenced by his superb<br />

one-handed catch and run against Vanderbilt. Washington also<br />

added a circus, sideline catch that contributed to his 78 yards<br />

receiving on six total catches. Washington is a dominant blocker<br />

and, along with Bowers, will be a focus of the Gators defensive<br />

game plan.<br />

MALAKI STARKS<br />

SAFETY<br />

BEAR ALEXANDER (DT #99) - Big Bear Alexander has earned<br />

playing time along the interior defensive line despite being a true<br />

freshman. Alexander had shoulder surgery after arriving at UGA<br />

and was not able to fully participate in offseason strength and<br />

conditioning. Nevertheless, Alexander is plenty stout and possesses<br />

a quick burst that should enable him to contribute quality snaps,<br />

even after the return of Jalen Carter.<br />

John Lastinger was the quarterback in Jacksonville<br />

for Georgia’s 44-0 victory in 1982 and 10-9 triumph<br />

in 1983 over the Gators, en route to 11-1 and 10-1-1<br />

Sugar and Cotton Bowl seasons.<br />

The Bulldogs rode a dominant rushing attack to<br />

a 42-7 win over Florida in 2017, with Sony Michel<br />

leading the way, carrying six times for 137 yards and<br />

two TDs, including a 74-yarder.<br />

Jake Fromm had a fantastic game at quarterback<br />

for the Bulldogs against Florida in 2019, completing<br />

20 of 30 aerials for 279 yards, a pair of touchdowns<br />

and a clutch third down pass.<br />

MALAKI STARKS (S #24) - Starks, another true<br />

freshman, is now fully entrenched as the starting safety<br />

beside Chris Smith. In fact, Starks played more defensive<br />

snaps than any other defensive player against Vanderbilt.<br />

Given Anthony Richardson’s struggles throwing the ball,<br />

Florida has become a run-heavy offense. Against the Gators,<br />

Starks will be asked to come into the box and make plays<br />

against a potent and talented run game.<br />

KELEE RINGO<br />

CORNERBACK<br />

KELEE RINGO (DB #5) - The usually terrific Ringo is<br />

coming off a game with a few missteps, including a pass<br />

interference penalty and a mistimed jump that could have<br />

led to a long reception if not for a dropped pass. The preseason<br />

All-American is a physical specimen with size that<br />

is not typically seen in a cornerback. The Gators, as they<br />

normally do, will take some deep shots off play action, and<br />

Ringo will need to prevent any big plays over the top. This<br />

will be an excellent test for Ringo and the secondary heading<br />

into a difficult stretch of games.<br />

GATORS TO WATCH<br />

BILLY NAPIER (HC) - This isn’t the start that Billy Napier was hoping<br />

for to begin his tenure with the Gators, but the SEC is a solid jump<br />

having previously coached in the Sun Belt Conference at the University<br />

of Louisiana. That being said, Napier has yet to tap into his unlocked<br />

potential. With the Warhawks, Napier saw three consecutive ten or more<br />

win seasons and left with a 40-12 record overall. Ten wins is now out of<br />

reach for the Gators, but that doesn’t mean they can’t beat the Dawgs in<br />

the always throw-the-stats out environment of Jacksonville.<br />

MONTRELL JOHNSON JR. (RB) - Following head coach Billy<br />

Napier over from the University of Louisiana, running back Montrell<br />

Johnson has done nothing but stunned in his short time in The Swamp.<br />

He ranks top 10 in the SEC in rushing yards with 425 on just 59 attempts;<br />

his rushing efficiency at 7.20 yards per carry is one of the best in the<br />

conference putting him just behind Alabama’s Jahmyr Gibbs. Together<br />

he, fellow back Trevor Etienne and his quarterback Richardson make for a<br />

dangerous Florida running game.<br />

ANTHONY RICHARDSON (QB) - Albeit it hasn’t been the season<br />

Anthony Richardson’s camp was hoping for six games in, but regardless you<br />

can’t deny the sheer athleticism of this guy. It’s his first year starting under a<br />

new head coach in one of the most competitive college football leagues in<br />

the country. Despite his sometimes struggles, he’s still managed to amass<br />

over 1,300 passing yards and almost 400 on the ground. Look for AR to<br />

provide a spark once his name is called in Jacksonville.<br />

JUSTIN SHORTER (WR) - Justin Shorter is one of the most explosive<br />

receivers in the SEC. He is second in the conference in yards per reception<br />

at 22.5. Any time he sees the ball you can expect it to go for a chunk play.<br />

On top of that he’s also 7th in the SEC in total receiving yards having<br />

collected 405 to this point in the season.<br />

MONTRELL JOHNSON JR.<br />

RUNNING BACK<br />

AMARI BURNEY (LB) - Playing off-ball linebacker, Amari Burney<br />

has been one of the Gators’ biggest playmakers so far this season. In the<br />

statistical categories it’s easier asking what he hasn’t done. He has 44 total<br />

tackles, 4 sacks, 1 pass deflection, 1 interception, and 1 forced fumble.<br />

Unlike Cox, Burney is often seen in coverage and deployed all over the<br />

field because of such.<br />

BRENTON COX (LB) - This one’s a must see. A Georgia native and<br />

former Bulldog turned Gator is now a leader on the rival team and has put<br />

up a number of sacks and tackles playing at the defensive end position.<br />

He’s only found his way to the quarterback twice this season, but Coach<br />

Smart has said in the past it’s common to gameplan around sacks. If<br />

anyone’s gonna put his hands on Bennett, it’ll be Cox.<br />

JASON MARSHALL JR (CB) - Only a sophomore, Jason Marshall<br />

has already amounted three pass deflections, and while that may not<br />

seem like a lot, to put into perspective Georgia’s Kelee Ringo only has two<br />

this season. Regarding the cornerback position, the less stats the better.<br />

It just shows he’s not being targeted because more likely than not he’s<br />

getting the job done in coverage. Marshall has earned a starting spot over<br />

an entire roster of SEC corners as just a second year.<br />

A cornerstone of the Gators 2006 and 2007 national<br />

championship teams, Al Horford has enjoyed a stellar<br />

NBA career, five times an NBA All-Star, four times<br />

with the Atlanta Hawks.<br />

One of the great players in Florida history, three time<br />

Pro Bowler Wilber Marshall was a stalwart on a pair of<br />

Super Bowl title-winning teams - the 1985 Bears and<br />

Washington in 1991.<br />

Steve Spurrier is the greatest Gator, winning the<br />

Heisman Trophy in 1966 and then coaching Florida to<br />

six SEC championships and the 1996 national title in<br />

TURNOVERS- In the first three games of the season, Georgia had zero turnovers and<br />

outscored Oregon, South Carolina by a cumulative score of 130-10. In a clunky win over<br />

Kent State, and a narrow victory at Missouri, turnovers plagued the Bulldogs. There was<br />

one against Auburn and none versus Vanderbilt. Protecting the football is essential. But Kirby<br />

Smart would love to see his defense - and special teams - create some turnovers. Remember<br />

how tight last year’s game was? Florida unwisely ran an interception out of the end zone. Then<br />

came a fumble that led to a Georgia touchdown, an interception that set up a Bulldogs TD and<br />

Nakobe Dean’s epic Pick Six that proved to be the knockout blow. All of that with under three<br />

minutes to go in the first half. There’s always energy and noise with the crowd split in half.<br />

Turnovers in Jacksonville seem to “just mean more.”<br />

CORRAL RICHARDSON - Anthony Richardson is a big play-maker for the Gators at<br />

quarterback. He has a huge arm and is an extremely dangerous runner. When Richardson<br />

2gets loose, the Gators offense is downright lethal. There’s skill and speed all around him, plus<br />

a tough and physical offensive line. Keeping containment, not over- pursuing, and not rushing past<br />

Richardson are essential to success. He’s a load, and no fun to tackle running downhill.<br />

WIN THE RUN GAME - In the history of this rivalry, along with turnovers, the most<br />

telling factor in who wins this legendary, emotional rivalry is the run game. The team that<br />

3runs the ball better, in general, wins. Run it better and win the turnover battle, that’s a solid<br />

recipe for victory. Daijun Edwards, Kenny McIntosh and Branson Robinson are tough and physical.<br />

That Bulldogs offensive line has to give them a little bit of space. Georgia also must come up with,<br />

as Smart says, “creative ways to run the football.” And get the ball to #19 Brock Bowers.<br />

STRIKE DOWNFIELD - The Florida secondary is athletic. Always is. The Gators<br />

will certainly try multiple looks to try and create pressure against the Georgia passing<br />

4game. Stetson Bennett IV is hopeful of having his healthiest collection of pass-catchers<br />

since the season-opening victory over Oregon. When the plays are there, it’s vital to strike.<br />

Georgia will have to run it strong, and hit through the air. It’s a good bet that Florida will stack<br />

the front and force the Bulldogs to lead with the passing game.<br />

CONQUER THE KICKING GAME - The winds blow funny in Jacksonville. They<br />

come whipping in off the St. Johns River and swirl through the old Gator Bowl. A lot<br />

5of excellent kickers have had nightmare afternoons and early evenings in Jacksonville.<br />

Making the kicks you’re “supposed” to make is essential. Field position with punting and a<br />

burst from the return game can make the difference. Then of course there is the potential<br />

of the double, a turnover in the return game. Watch the fake and the surprise onsides kick<br />

Dawgs! It’s a good bet, especially with the open week, the Gators will try something tricky to<br />

try and steal a possession.<br />

DAWG BONES OFFENSE - GEORGIA<br />

Georgia’s offense has been every bit as potent as expected before the<br />

season began. The Dawgs are averaging 41.7 PPG (#10 nationally), 527 YPG<br />

(#4 nationally), 330 passing YPG (#10 nationally), and 197 rushing YPG (#30<br />

nationally). Georgia got back to running the ball effectively the last couple of<br />

weeks and if the Dawgs can keep teams honest by hitting some deep shots,<br />

they should continue to roll up points. Florida’s running game has been the<br />

offenses only bright spot, producing an average of 214 YPG (#17 nationally).<br />

Florida ranks 91st nationally in passing YPG and ranks 101st nationally in<br />

PPG. Anthony Richardson is only completing a less-than-pedestrian 57% of<br />

his passes and has more interceptions (7) than TD passes (6).<br />

The Dawgs’ defense may be the best in the country. After seven games,<br />

the Dawgs are only giving up 9.1 PPG (#2 nationally), 247 YPG (#3<br />

nationally), 164 passing YPG (#8 nationally), and 83 rushing YPG (#5<br />

nationally). The Dawgs have accomplished this with their All-American<br />

DL, Jalen Carter, who has played little more than one game. Carter<br />

should be back for the Florida game. The Gators rank 106th in total<br />

defense giving up nearly 430 YPG. Florida is statistically weak against<br />

the run and pass. Florida ranks 87th in the country against the pass and<br />

111th against the run. Unlike Georgia, Florida does not have great depth<br />

defensively and they tend to wear down as the game progresses.<br />

DAWG BONES SPECIAL TEAMS – GEORGIA<br />

Jack Podlesny has been superb for Georgia this year, making 14/16 of his field<br />

goal attempts. Jack Pod has a career 83 percent average converting field goals,<br />

which bests Rodrigo Blankenship’s career field goal percentage of 82.5. Punter<br />

Brett Thorson has also been steady for the Dawgs. Thorson has not been<br />

called on much this year but is averaging a respectable 43 yards a punt and<br />

has been adept at pinning teams inside the 20. Adam Mihalek, Florida’s kicker,<br />

is only converting on 56 percent of his field goals, but does have a long of 50<br />

yards. Georgia is excellent in kick coverage – primarily using starters on most<br />

coverage units – while Florida relies more on back-ups.<br />

DAWG BONES COACHING – GEORGIA<br />

This year is not off to the start many Florida fans hoped for after the<br />

Gators beat Utah to open the season. Napier should be credited<br />

for transitioning the offense to a more run-focused approach after<br />

Richardson’s early season troubles airing it out. Florida’s defense has<br />

underperformed despite having some NFL talent. In contrast, Kirby<br />

Smart is at the pinnacle of the college coaching fraternity. Coming off<br />

a national championship and a new 10-year contract making him one<br />

of the highest paid coaches in the nation, Smart shows no signs of<br />

complacency. In fact, many predicted a drop off defensively this year<br />

after the Dawgs lost 15 players to the NFL draft, but statistically this<br />

year’s defense is on par with last year’s. Recruiting is also rolling, as usual.<br />

DAWG BONES OVERALL – GEORGIA<br />

Georgia should be favored by double digits against the Gators. Both teams<br />

will be coming off bye weeks, so expect a few new wrinkles from each<br />

team. As with any heated rivalry game, the favorite does not always win.<br />

Unless the Dawgs turn the ball over and fail to play inspired football, the<br />

Dawgs should be 8-0 heading into a Game Day weekend in the Classic City<br />

against Tennessee.<br />

The Gators are a middle of the pack<br />

SEC team. They really struggle on<br />

defense — one of the worst Gator<br />

defenses in my lifetime — and the<br />

offense is hot and cold, usually<br />

based on how well Anthony<br />

Richardson is playing. They are 4-3,<br />

but in fairness, the three teams that<br />

have beaten them are Tennessee,<br />

Kentucky and surging LSU. But it’s<br />

really just an average team.<br />

most of the Spurrier years, I really<br />

didn’t think there was much chance<br />

Georgia could ever win. They all<br />

felt like mismatches going in, at<br />

least to me. This is the same, just<br />

in Georgia’s favor. I can’t imagine,<br />

even if everything goes as well<br />

as possible for Florida, that the<br />

Gators could win. Georgia is so<br />

much better. Lots of really good<br />

players, really well-coached. They<br />

are better than the three teams<br />

that beat Florida already. But to<br />

your question — the Gators need<br />

Richardson to play his best game.<br />

They need him to run more than<br />

he has, to create havoc outside the<br />

pocket. He is an inconsistent passer,<br />

but he is an electric athlete. He has<br />

to be amazing in this game. They<br />

need to convert third downs and<br />

stay on the field and keep a really<br />

struggling defense off the field. And<br />

they probably need to get a few<br />

takeaways. I think they have to win<br />

the turnover battle by at least three<br />

to even have a chance. It’s not likely.<br />

WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON<br />

GEORGIA?<br />

I think the Dawgs are terrific.<br />

Talented, tough, smart, wellcoached.<br />

Probably asleep at the<br />

wheel a bit against Missouri, but<br />

still found a way to win. Georgia<br />

might be the best program in<br />

America right now — at least on par<br />

with Alabama and Ohio State — the<br />

only other ones in the conversation.<br />

Kirby has really recruited at an elite<br />

level and they are coaching that<br />

way as well. Stetson Bennett has<br />

seen about all there is to see in<br />

college football and can win with<br />

his arm and his legs. Nobody would<br />

be surprised if they repeat.<br />

MAKE THE CASE FOR<br />

JACKSONVILLE TO KEEP<br />

THE GAME.<br />

I can’t imagine that the game would<br />

ever leave. I know Kirby believes<br />

it is a recruiting disadvantage<br />

to lose that recruiting weekend<br />

every other year, but now that the<br />

home team can host recruits, that<br />

should alleviate that. The game<br />

is financially beneficial to both<br />

schools, more than playing at home<br />

would be. In addition, both schools<br />

get 40,000 seats every year. And I’d<br />

hate to be the one who told those<br />

rich Georgia boosters on Sea Island<br />

and elsewhere in South Georgia<br />

that they are losing their game.<br />

Beyond that, one of the things that<br />

separates college football from<br />

every other sport is its wonderful<br />

traditions. Marching bands and<br />

cheerleaders and student sections<br />

and wonderful neutral site games.<br />

Selfishly, I know how critically<br />

important it is to our city. I hope like<br />

crazy our city has it forever.<br />

OF YEARS, WHAT WOULD<br />

YOU LIKE TO SEE NEXT?<br />

The 12-team playoff. We’re headed<br />

there by 2026 at the latest, but it<br />

appears there is real momentum<br />

to get it done by 2024. We need<br />

more teams in the hunt, more<br />

fan bases excited about being<br />

in a winner-take-all tournament.<br />

I’m very excited about that. The<br />

other big talkers are conference<br />

expansion and NIL, and I know both<br />

topics get major headlines, but<br />

I’d be disingenuous if I said I have<br />

strong opinions about either. I like<br />

players getting theirs, so I’m totally<br />

ok with NIL, although I hope we<br />

can find some consistency or how<br />

it is applied from state to state. As<br />

for conference expansion, I’m fine<br />

with exactly where it’s headed. The<br />

best conferences are going to keep<br />

adding the best teams that aren’t<br />

already there. Just how it is. Which<br />

is fine with me.<br />

Georgia 41, Florida 24. There is a<br />

gulf between these two teams right<br />

now. I can’t imagine it being much<br />

closer than that.<br />

3 packs Sunbeam dinner rolls<br />

1 lb thinly sliced ham<br />

3/4 pound thinly sliced Swiss cheese<br />

Directions:<br />

Cream first five ingredients. Cut rolls<br />

top and bottom. Spread on both<br />

parts. Layer with ham and cheese.<br />

Wrap in aluminum foil. Bake 350 for<br />

15 minutes or until hot.<br />

Bulldawg Illustrated continues its series, featuring long-time UGA personalities of the Fourth Estate. There are many who are published authors along with<br />

network television superstars. Our sixth installment spotlights former Georgia Bulldogs’ play-by-play announcer, Ed Thilenius, who like so many media stars<br />

got his start in a local newsroom (Athens Banner-Herald).<br />

Before Scott Howard, an underappreciated announcer who<br />

underscores the fundamentals of radio play by play, there was<br />

Larry Munson; before Munson there was Ed Thilenius who had,<br />

at one time, a similar cult following as Munson did.<br />

Thilenius’ teams, unfortunately, did not have the good fortune of<br />

winning like those of Munson era. Larry’s broadcasting career was linked<br />

with the accomplished coaching of Vince Dooley.<br />

Like the coach of his era, Wallace Butts, Thilenius did enjoy a late<br />

championship run in the 50s when the Bulldogs won the SEC title in 1959<br />

and subsequently defeated Missouri in the Orange Bowl 14-0.<br />

Latter day Bulldog fans don’t remember Thilenius, although in the UGA<br />

archives are tapes of his play-by-play accounts including the broadcast of<br />

the 1957 Tech game when Georgia broke the drought by defeating Tech on<br />

Grant Field, 7-0, Theron Sapp scoring the only touchdown of the game.<br />

Before his dalliance into radio, which segued into a permanent gig,<br />

Thilenius was a reporter with the Athens Banner-Herald. There was an<br />

incident on campus in the late 40s having to do with a prominent dean<br />

being shot by his estranged wife. Thilenuis covered the story and when<br />

he showed up in the dean’s hospital room, he was greeted with, “Hello<br />

Ed, I see the press is here.”<br />

With a perfect bass voice for radio, Thilenius, who sounded as though<br />

he might have swallowed Walter Conkrite, moved into full time status<br />

with WRFC, covering sports and news for the local station, as he had<br />

done for the Banner-Herald; and calling Bulldog football, basketball, and<br />

baseball games along with the Friday night games of Athens High. A<br />

busy man, indeed.<br />

By the time of the 1965 football season, in which he called the flea<br />

flicker game which upset defending national champion Alabama,<br />

Thilenius had moved to WAGA TV in Atlanta, becoming the city’s first full<br />

time TV sports director. In 1966, the Falcons joined the National Football<br />

League, and Thilenius became the announcer for the NFL franchise.<br />

At the time, CBS arranged for two announcers to call each game. If the<br />

Falcons, for example, were playing Green Bay, stations in the Southeast<br />

got the broadcast of Thilenius, while the Midwest stations heard the<br />

game called by Ray Scott.<br />

The next season, CBS decided that one announcer crew was sufficient<br />

and let half of the announcers and crews go. Thilenius did not make<br />

the cut. He was devastated. Falcon owner, Rankin Smith, did his best to<br />

get CBS for find a spot for Thilenius, but to no avail. Ed then wanted his<br />

old Georgia job back but Joel Eaves, athletic director had already hired<br />

Munson and would not consider a change. Ed drove over to Athens to<br />

meet me and ask how he could present his case, but I had to tell him I<br />

was not in a position to help him.<br />

In 1964, I recall, Bobby Dodd then AD at Tech, made an offer to Thilenius<br />

to become the Yellow Jacket announcer. It ended up with Ed getting<br />

a raise out of the negotiations, which greatly irritated Eaves. was not<br />

sympathetic with Thilenius’ desire to return to the Bulldog booth.<br />

Interestingly, a few years later, Munson and Thilenius became<br />

acquainted. One day, I got a call from Munson saying that it would be<br />

nice to have Thilenius back on the broadcast doing color.<br />

That would have gone over splendidly in some circles, but I had to tell<br />

Munson that I didn’t think it would be a good idea. While I was not sure<br />

what would come of a discussion with the incumbent power brokers at the<br />

moment, namely Coach Eaves, I was fearful that Thilenius in that position<br />

might cause a great controversy. Some fans, with Munson’s popularity in its<br />

infancy, might clamor to have Thilenius back doing play-by-play.<br />

I always thought that it was big of Munson to even consider the<br />

arrangement, but I felt that such a move might end up in debilitating<br />

controversy.<br />

The last survivor of the Thilenius broadcast crew, John Withers worked<br />

not only the Georgia broadcasts but the Falcon broadcasts of 1966,<br />

remembers Thilenius as being “a perfectionist.”<br />

“I enjoyed working with him. He would always try to compliment our<br />

crew for the job we did. He would make sure that he mentioned our<br />

names which gave us great status around campus and the host hotel<br />

when we were on the road. I thought he was a great announcer.”<br />

Ole timers have great recall of Thilenius’ broadcasts. “Imagine your radio<br />

dial as a football field, the lefts and rights are the same.” Then he would<br />

describe the huddle of quarterback Fran Tarkenton. “Tarkenton talks to<br />

his two rows or five.”<br />

His voice was so authoritative. No sports announcer ever sounded<br />

better on radio.<br />

LORAN SMITH BOOK TAKES DAWG FANS<br />

FROM PROGRAM’S BEGINNING TO THE COVETED 2021<br />

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP<br />

Loran Smith very seldom misses attending the Major golf<br />

tournaments … the Masters, U.S. Open, PGA and the British Open.<br />

But this July the University of Georgia broadcasting legend,<br />

historian and author didn’t make the British Open tournament in<br />

St. Andrews, Scotland due to having to put the finishing touches<br />

on his new book, “Return to Glory.”<br />

And this latest creation by Smith is one the Bulldog Nation<br />

should relish as it not only relives the 2021 Bulldogs’ run to the<br />

program’s first National Championship since 1980 but, also, takes<br />

the reader through UGA football history<br />

from the day the Bulldogs first took the<br />

field in 1892 under Dr. Charles Herty.<br />

Released in August by Whitman<br />

Publishing, LLC, Smith’s 160-page book<br />

is one in a long line of publications<br />

that Loran has written on all things<br />

concerning Georgia football.<br />

“I guess there’s about 14 or 15 I’ve<br />

written,” said Smith. “Some of those are<br />

co-authored, one with Vince (Dooley)<br />

and ‘Glory, Glory’ with Lewis Grizzard.<br />

One of those was on the history of<br />

the Orange Bowl and another was<br />

on Athens, my hometown. I did the<br />

history of the Orange Bowl for their<br />

50th anniversary in 1980. Then I wrote<br />

five books on the Masters…those are<br />

not included in the stats I just gave you;<br />

those are sort of annuals.<br />

“On this book, it has some old history<br />

in there but I wrote the manuscript<br />

for the new part in January,” he said.<br />

“With the Georgia history in there, I was<br />

able to get it done before we won the<br />

championship. So, it’s retracing old ground but the thing about<br />

that first-ever Georgia game on Herty Field is a tackle on Georgia’s<br />

first team told John Stegeman, our preeminent historian, that we<br />

beat Mercer by that 50-0 score. But the scorekeeper got it wrong<br />

because he missed two scores when he went across the street to<br />

buy some booze. So, I’ve always maintained that not only was it<br />

our first game but also our first tailgate party!<br />

“The big thing about this book, with words and photography,<br />

it touches the latest national championship. So that should<br />

be the appeal of the book, that we’re celebrating a national<br />

championship. And ‘Return to Glory’ is a pretty good description<br />

of the story of the 2021 season and ’21 team.”<br />

Smith, now 84 and going strong, said Georgia’s three national<br />

championship teams of 1942, 1980 and 2021 all possessed<br />

similar traits, which allowed those Bulldogs to overcome all odds<br />

enroute to the most prestigious trophy in college football. He<br />

even included a non-national title team at Georgia, the 1959 SEC<br />

champions, in the discussion.<br />

“The big thing is, like all championship teams, there was a<br />

togetherness, a brotherhood,” said Smith. “Like in 1959, we didn’t<br />

win the (national) championship but that was a classic example<br />

of the benefit of good timing and also of the togetherness that<br />

team had. Dave Lloyd was a disruptive guy who left the team<br />

and Coach (Wally) Butts and the coaches were lamenting the<br />

loss. But the players were overjoyed because he had such a<br />

disruptive factor. And coinciding with<br />

that, Coach J.B. Whitworth had the same<br />

effect on the players that Erk Russell<br />

had. It was almost identical; now he<br />

didn’t butt heads or that kind of thing<br />

but the brotherhood of that team was<br />

unbeatable. So was that of the 1942<br />

team. Now I say that having not been<br />

here then but the factors were the same.<br />

Like Georgia’s three national<br />

championship teams, Smith said the<br />

SEC champion 1959 Bulldogs – who lost<br />

only to South Carolina and scored an<br />

Orange Bowl victory over Missouri – had<br />

great leadership.<br />

“Captain of the 1959 team was<br />

Don Soberdash and Jimmy Vickers<br />

was alternate captain and then Fran<br />

Tarkenton was captain and Pat Dye was<br />

alternate captain in 1960,” Smith noted.<br />

“Tarkenton was the central figure in<br />

rallying the troops, rallying the players.<br />

And they liked him very much and<br />

he made a big difference. And I think<br />

with Coach Whitworth providing the<br />

inspiration … by that time Coach Butts<br />

had some lean years and he had settled into a cynical stance<br />

which came off as negative, and Coach Whitworth balanced the<br />

emotions. He made football fun, made everybody believe in it<br />

and made everybody feel good.<br />

“Like I said, I wasn’t here for the 1942 team but I just heard all<br />

what they said about it … like Racehorse Davis, (Frank) Sinkwich,<br />

(Charley) Trippi, I knew all those guys. And Van Davis.”<br />

Smith said Dooley’s 1980 champions literally overcame all odds,<br />

starting the season ranked 16th in the AP poll and hurdling one<br />

obstacle after another enroute to a 12-0 record and the national<br />

championship win over Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl.<br />

“Of course, in 1980 Georgia was not figured to be the best by<br />

any prognosticators but, boy, they just had that great leadership,”<br />

said Smith. “Herschel was the missing piece and he just really fit<br />

in. He had the greatest attitude, was selfless and was really team<br />

oriented. It was just a Cinderella year. Everybody felt good and everybody worked.<br />

“You could see the resemblance with the 2021 team,” Loran said. “Erk came out with the<br />

“Big Team, Little Me” so from the beginning everybody, led by (captain) Frank Ross, took<br />

the attitude that they were going to find some way to win – they didn’t care who had the<br />

glory. Everybody had to run wind sprints and Herschel would be first in line. Both the 1980<br />

and 2021 teams were very similar in that they had all the ingredients of selflessness.”<br />

However, unlike most of the 2021 team’s 14-1 season, Dooley’s 1980 Bulldogs had to win<br />

a number of close games to remain unbeaten. “They just found a way to win,” said Smith,<br />

“and that was another of Erk’s big slogans…’One More Time.’ I remember him saying it in<br />

New Orleans when we knew Notre Dame was going to be a tough, tough opponent.”<br />

Smith said Kirby Smart’s 2021 Bulldogs, like the 1942 and 1980 national champs before<br />

them, just had a brotherhood all across the board.<br />

“Like the great defense, the offense had it, too,” he said. “And I think the beauty of that<br />

team was you had that impregnable defense, except in the SEC Championship Game.<br />

You know Stetson Bennett, if there’s ever been a rags-to-riches story …. It was against all<br />

odds and he was perfect for Georgia’s play-action offense. He was just a perfect fit; he’s<br />

got such quick feet and touch on the ball and he’s very smart, a very heady player. People<br />

that remember Eddie Stanky (former MLB second baseman, manager), he was that kind of<br />

player. He might not in the flesh be the best talent but he was hard to beat.”<br />

Smith admitted that ‘Return to Glory’ was somewhat of a challenge to get finished on time.<br />

“The challenge with this book was we had so many players and coaches that were<br />

significant in the story so I did little vignettes and sidebars and there’s close to 50 of those,”<br />

he said. “And then the big thing was trying to get Kirby’s insights. You know after the game<br />

he got to bed about 4 a.m., something like that he told me. And then he’s up for the press<br />

conference and then he flew home. So, he didn’t sleep in his own bed until the second<br />

night. So, Monday night was Indianapolis, Tuesday night was Athens and then Wednesday<br />

morning, it was business as usual he had gone back to work. And he starts flying on that<br />

helicopter, recruiting then. Then the meetings he had to attend. He just didn’t have time<br />

but he did help me at the strategic points. I wanted more of his insights into the thing and<br />

that’s what I kept badgering him about. And, we got that done!<br />

“But, really, I got this Return to Glory done relatively quickly because I had to start doing<br />

the interviewing with the players and coaches on a deferred basis,” said Smith. “I couldn’t<br />

do Kirby and the coaches until they got through recruiting so it was February. So, I got a<br />

late start but that gave me a chance to write the transcript in January.”<br />

Smart has the foreword in Smith’s new book, praising the support of the Bulldog Nation<br />

and pointing out how the Georgia fan base was most instrumental in the Bulldogs’ run to<br />

the national championship.<br />

JOHN LITTLE 2022 GA-FLA HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE<br />

Come Saturday, one of college<br />

football’s greatest rivalries takes<br />

place on the banks of the St. John’s<br />

River in Jacksonville, Florida. Yes, ladies<br />

and gentlemen it is the World’s Largest<br />

Outdoor Cocktail Party; it is a city and a<br />

stadium split right down the middle with<br />

red and black on one side and orange<br />

and blue on the other; it is … drumroll<br />

please… Georgia-Florida.<br />

As the men who represent this great<br />

institution suit up to take on the Gators of<br />

Gainesville, millions will be watching, but<br />

only a few will be honored on the field.<br />

One of the men being recognized prior<br />

to the game will be University of Georgia<br />

legend and Damn Good Dawg John Little,<br />

the roverback of the mid-1980s who<br />

secured his spot in the 2022 class of the<br />

Georgia/Florida Hall of Fame.<br />

Little’s resumé, however, doesn’t end<br />

with the Georgia/Florida Hall of Fame.<br />

Little was inducted as an Southeastern<br />

Conference Football Legend in 2014 as<br />

well as earning All-SEC, Academic All-SEC<br />

and All-American honors in 1985 and ‘86.<br />

For the ‘86 season, Little was named a team<br />

captain, and now, Little is a successful<br />

businessman with Georgia Crown<br />

Distributing Co. as their Vice President of<br />

Pricing and Procurement. With a name like<br />

Little, he sure is a big deal.<br />

The great success story of Little started<br />

in the one and only Panama City Beach,<br />

Florida, at Mosley High School. After a<br />

coaching change in Little’s freshman<br />

year, the Dolphins went from a two-win<br />

maximum program to a 5-5 sophomore<br />

season, 10-1 in his junior year and 13-1<br />

with a loss in the state title his last season.<br />

Little’s contribution to the team did not<br />

go unnoticed by the Dawgs north of the<br />

Georgia/Florida line as Coach Ray Goff<br />

ventured down to Mosley and began<br />

recruiting Little. Though he wasn’t a highlytouted<br />

recruit, Goff and Georgia wanted<br />

Little on the roster.<br />

“[Goff] was the first coach, first school<br />

to recruit me,” Little said. “It was really the<br />

only school that I felt wanted me, so my<br />

decision was pretty easy. Then, once I got<br />

to Athens on my visit, I was like, ‘Yep, I<br />

know where I’m going.’”<br />

At Georgia, Little had the burden and<br />

responsibility of filling the great Terry<br />

Hoage’s shoes at roverback. Little said he<br />

was compared to him often, but they had<br />

different styles of play. Nonetheless, Hoage<br />

set the bar high at that position and Little<br />

said he did everything in his power to<br />

remotely compare to the all-time legend.<br />

Come 1986, although Little had already<br />

proven himself as one of the best<br />

defensive backs in Georgia history, he<br />

made a statement to be an all-timer like<br />

Hoage, hauling in two picks at Clemson in<br />

the fourth quarter.<br />

“It was a huge rivalry game then,” Little<br />

said. “They were one of the most talented<br />

teams in America at the time, and that<br />

game was so close. So securing those<br />

two picks stands out to me as my favorite<br />

moment at Georgia.”<br />

Little’s historic career set records as he<br />

ranks seventh all-time in career tackles<br />

with 381, the most by any defensive back<br />

in school history. While Little prepares to<br />

accept the honor of the Georgia-Florida<br />

Hall of Fame thanks to an illustrious career<br />

and standout performances in his Georgia-<br />

Florida games, he found out about the<br />

recognition in a rather unconventional<br />

way.<br />

Communication] emailed me, and it<br />

looked like a spam email to me,” Little said.<br />

“I didn’t respond. He emailed me again<br />

the next day and was like ‘You need to call<br />

me.’ I called him and he told me. Thank<br />

goodness, because this is a pretty cool<br />

honor.”<br />

Little will be attending the Georgia/<br />

Florida game to accept the recognition<br />

alongside future College Football Hall of<br />

Famer and current Pro Football Hall of<br />

Famer Champ Bailey, another defensive<br />

back at UGA.<br />

As mentioned earlier, this is not Little’s<br />

first recognition for his performance on the<br />

field. In 2014, when he was selected to the<br />

SEC Legends, he and his wife attended the<br />

event. The week of the SEC Championship,<br />

the club holds a dinner and announces<br />

each new inductee of that year’s class,<br />

and alongside all the other greats of the<br />

SEC, each inductee’s college highlights<br />

are shown. In Little’s class was legendary<br />

Auburn running back Cadillac Williams.<br />

“My wife went to Auburn,” Little said. “Her<br />

highlight of the night was she got to meet<br />

Cadillac Williams, but for me, it was so neat<br />

to be with those guys, sit next to them and<br />

be honored with them.”<br />

The Panama City native left his mark in<br />

Athens and on the gridiron as well, but<br />

Athens and this University left its mark on<br />

Little too.<br />

“It is still, 40 years later, the greatest<br />

college experience you can possibly have,”<br />

Little said. “The city embraces all of the<br />

sports teams. The students get involved<br />

and it makes the great atmosphere that<br />

we know and love. When I was there, the<br />

team lived in McWhorter Hall all together,<br />

and that made for some of the best times<br />

in my life. I would never have thought I<br />

could have enjoyed a college experience<br />

that much.”<br />

As the Georgia/Florida Hall of Fame gets<br />

ready to induct Little, the Georgia people<br />

will say cheers to John Little at the World’s<br />

Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.<br />

A case of the flu kept me off the field for the Vanderbilt<br />

game. The fact that I was not there and how UGA<br />

dismantled Vandy leaves little for me to analyze. Sure there<br />

were mistakes and tackling was an issue at times, but when<br />

your team waxes a conference opponent 55-0, it has been<br />

a good day.<br />

I had almost forgotten how nice it is to have replays<br />

served up after every play, but no matter how great your<br />

entertainment system, the in-stadium experience remains<br />

unchallenged. Of course, my usual vantage point is the<br />

sideline, providing glimpses and sounds of the game that<br />

TV can never capture.<br />

Vandy has trouble fielding a competitive SEC team,<br />

but that does not mean its players do not play hard.<br />

They kept coming at the Dawgs on both sides of the ball<br />

until they finally ran out of gas in the fourth quarter. The<br />

Commodores do not have the talent to compete with the<br />

Georgias of the world, but they never quit. Getting beat is<br />

not the same as giving up.<br />

Next up is Florida, who lost to LSU two Saturdays ago,<br />

but the Gators will be ready for Georgia. They will be<br />

hyped and full of themselves, but it will not help. Florida<br />

is a few recruiting classes away from being competitive<br />

with the SEC’s top teams. That is not to say that Georgia is<br />

invincible, but if both teams play close to their potential,<br />

Georgia wins going away.<br />

After Tennessee’s massive win over Bama, expect to<br />

see the upstart Vols roll into Athens a week after Florida<br />

with a legion of orange-clad fans, sending ticket prices<br />

through the roof. The atmosphere will be electric. With<br />

national hype and championship implications, Georgia vs.<br />

Tennessee is the matchup that fans deserve.<br />

These are the games that UGA hired Kirby to win.<br />

Tennessee follows Florida, then Mississippi State and<br />

Kentucky. It is going to be a fun run, but, for now, all<br />

eyes and focus must remain on the Cocktail Party in<br />

Jacksonville.<br />

A look back at what decided the game<br />

between Georgia and Vanderbilt.<br />

The Georgia Bulldogs’ game against<br />

Vanderbilt seemed as if it was just another<br />

day in the office for Kirby Smart and his<br />

team. Nothing too crazy, nothing too wild,<br />

just another notch in the win column for<br />

55-0<br />

the Dawgs. Something to note was the<br />

consistent and balanced offense. Stetson<br />

Bennett went 24 for 30 for two touchdowns<br />

and 289 yards only playing through three<br />

FRESHMAN OFFENSIVE PLAYER<br />

Dillon Bell - The freshman receiver from Houston, Texas that<br />

stands 6-1, 210-pound had a great day against Vanderbilt. His<br />

season totals are 13 catches for 131 yards, but against the ’Dores<br />

Dillon had five receptions for 54 yards and a TD. Due to injuries,<br />

receiving might be the weakest position on the Georgia offense at<br />

this point in the season. However with the freshman Bell stepping<br />

up and giving Stetson another target that he can count on, that<br />

will be key going down the homestretch. When you look around<br />

the offense, a lot of freshmen are playing and this go-round Dillon<br />

Bell is my offensive freshman player of the game.<br />

FRESHMAN DEFENSIVE PLAYER<br />

Jalon Walker - My defensive player of the game versus<br />

Vanderbilt is a young freshman who is making a mark in the<br />

middle of a Tenacious D. Walker is a 6-2, 225-pound freshman<br />

out of Salisbury, North Carolina. He had a solid game against the<br />

Commodores with four tackles and two solo tackles. The freshman<br />

linebacker is making a name for himself in the middle of a defense<br />

that has housed two Butkus Award winners in recent years. His<br />

play as a freshman stands out at one of the toughest positions on<br />

any defense. He’s got his feet wet through seven games and now<br />

will step into the meat of the SEC schedule where his physical<br />

presence will be greatly appreciated by the Bulldog Nation. His<br />

performance through seven games and especially against the<br />

Commodores makes him my freshman Bulldog defensive player of<br />

the game.<br />

FRESHMAN SPECIAL TEAM PLAYER<br />

Brett Thorson - Once again I’m going down under and checking<br />

the box. I’m picking the thunder from down under. Brett Thorson,<br />

though he didn’t play a lot, was effective on his one punt for<br />

36 yards down the inside the 20. Brett has done exceptionally<br />

well filling in for one of the best punters in Georgia history, Jake<br />

Camarda, and doing a very effective job for the Bulldogs. He needs<br />

to stay sharp during this off week because his foot will play a key<br />

role in every game from here on out on the Bulldogs march for a<br />

second straight national championship. You cannot put too much<br />

value on putting a team inside their 20 with an aggressive bulldog<br />

defense coming on the field. The better Brett performs the better<br />

start our defense has to do what they do best, dominate opposing<br />

offenses. I know one thing is for sure – there is a big Bulldog Club<br />

down in Australia and it’s growing every day.<br />

We head into the final week of October, as the season flies by again, with<br />

some enormous matchups. The unbeatens are dwindling each week as<br />

opposing teams look to right their own ship with massive upsets over the<br />

top-ranked teams.<br />

1. GEORGIA - The Bulldogs were off this past<br />

weekend to recharge the batteries for the annual<br />

border battle against Florida, which was also off, in<br />

Jacksonville. Georgia is hopeful of getting some key injured<br />

players back, while trying to make it 8-0.<br />

2. OHIO STATE - The Buckeyes domination<br />

continued with a 54-10 demolition of offensively<br />

challenged Iowa. There is a lot of momentum for Ohio<br />

State, as Ryan Day’s crew sets its sights on Penn State in State<br />

College. This team has the goods to make a run.<br />

3. TENNESSEE - There was no letdown or lookahead<br />

for the Volunteers against Ut-Martin in a 65-24<br />

win. This offense is tremendous and Hendon Hooker<br />

is rightfully a Heisman front-runner. Kentucky comes calling<br />

Saturday night for what should be a dandy.<br />

4. CLEMSON - The Tigers are undefeated, and<br />

survived a big time upset push from Syracuse to win<br />

27-21 at Death Valley. There’s an open date and then<br />

Clemson heads to Notre Dame for a big showdown in South Bend.<br />

5. ALABAMA - The Crimson Tide defense flexed its<br />

muscles and Alabama cruised past Mississippi State 30-<br />

6. Bama is off this week, and then it’s LSU in a big battle<br />

against the big rivals in Baton Rouge. Alabama is again right<br />

square in the middle of it all.<br />

6. MICHIGAN - These last two seasons have been<br />

tremendous for the Wolverines. The defending Big Ten<br />

champions are 7-0 and coming off an open date for a<br />

big one against Michigan State in Ann Arbor. Jim Harbaugh has a<br />

very good Big Ten running attack.<br />

7. OREGON - Since getting blown away by Georgia 49-3<br />

in the season opener, Dan Lanning’s Ducks have gotten to<br />

work and taken care of business. A 45-30 win over UCLA<br />

this past Saturday is the highlight. The Ducks go to Cal Saturday.<br />

8. TCU - What a tremendous season for the Horned<br />

Frogs, who improved to 7-0 with a nice comeback<br />

win over Kansas State in Fort Worth. Sonny Dykes has<br />

gotten the Gary Patterson great days in Cowtown right back.<br />

Could be tricky Saturday at West Virginia.<br />

9. USC - The Trojans had an open date to stew on a<br />

43-42 heartbreaking loss to Utah. Now Southern Cal<br />

can refocus and turn their sights to Arizona in Tucson.<br />

USC will be heavily favored in its next three before UCLA and the<br />

Fighting Irish.<br />

10. OLE MISS - The Rebels suffered their first<br />

loss of the season, going down to LSU 45-20 this<br />

past Saturday. This tough schedule in the SEC West<br />

continues this weekend against Texas A&M in College<br />

Station. A win is a must for the Rebels Atlanta aspirations.<br />

11. OKLAHOMA STATE - The Cowboys pulled<br />

out a thrilling 41-34 win over Texas in Stillwater to the<br />

delight of the Oklahoma State faithful. Now it is off to<br />

the Little Apple to play Kansas State. The Pokes are almost always<br />

right in the mix under Mike Gundy’s watch.<br />

12. WAKE FOREST - The Demon Deacons had a<br />

tremendous season last year and have just one loss<br />

this season, in overtime, to Clemson. Wake Forest<br />

dusted Boston College 43-15 this past weekend. The Deacons<br />

head to Louisville Saturday.<br />

13. UCLA - The Bruins got worked over by Oregon in<br />

Eugene. But it was just the first loss for Chip Kelly’s team.<br />

The PAC `12 is in its best playoff positioning in several<br />

years. UCLA hosts Stanford Saturday, and that will be physical.<br />

14. PENN STATE - The Nittany Lions bounced back<br />

from a blowout loss to Michigan with an impressive<br />

45-17 victory over Minnesota. Penn State will go allin<br />

this week at home with Ohio State coming to town, but the<br />

Buckeyes have a big talent edge.<br />

15. LSU - The Fightin’ Tigers fell behind Ole Miss<br />

17-3 in the first half in Baton Rouge. Then LSU put it<br />

all together and blew past the Rebels 45-20 with a<br />

dominating second half performance. The Tigers are off Saturday,<br />

then it’s Bama in Red Stick.<br />
