Caros amigos da Música Coral, 

É com enorme prazer que vos acolhemos 

e damos as boas-vindas na primeira 

edição da nova série do evento LISBON 

SINGS. Estamos todos desejosos de cantar 

e celebrar juntamente com os 25 coros 

participantes, num total de 16 países. Este 

novo formato de evento, que decorre em 

paralelo com o evento ON STAGE LISBON, 

permite, além do desafio da competição em 

diferentes categorias, a oportunidade de 

participar em vários concertos e em ações 

de melhoria de desempenho. 

Contudo, e sendo Lisboa um dos destinos 

mais populares na Europa, não é apenas a 

maravilhosa música de todo o mundo que 

nos aguarda. Vamos desfrutar do verão 

tardio em Portugal com especial ênfase a 

11 de Novembro, dia de S. Martinho com a 

chegada das castanhas maduras e o vinho 

novo! 

Dirigimos um agradecimento muito especial 

aos nossos anfitriões pela excelente 

colaboração e boa parceria. Aguardamos 

todos com grande expectativa os próximos 

dias de "verão de S. Martinho" repletos 

de música, alegria, amizade e memórias

Dear friends of Choral Music, 

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you 

all to the premiere of the new LISBON SINGS 

event series. We are very much looking 

forward to singing and celebrating together 

again with 25 participating choirs from a 

total of 16 nations. In combination with ON 

STAGE LISBON, this new event format offers, 

in addition to the challenge of a competition 

in different categories, the opportunity to 

participate in evaluation performances and 

various concerts. 

However, as one of the most popular travel 

destinations in Europe, not only wonderful 

music from around the world awaits us 

in Lisbon in the coming days. Let's enjoy 

together the late summer in Portugal and 

especially on November 11, St. Martin's Day 

with the first ripe chestnuts and the first 

wine of the year! 

A big thank you goes especially to our hosts 

for the wonderful cooperation and good 

partnership. We are all looking forward 

to late summer days full of music, joy, 

friendship and everlasting memories! 

After this long period of silence, let us finally 

fill the stages of this world with singing 

again - today in Lisbon, in July 2023 at the 

World Choir Games in Gangneung (Republic 

of Korea) or in October 2023 at the European 

Choir Games in Norrköping (Sweden). I wish

… CONNECTING BRIDGES 

30 years of success: Since 1988 INTERKULTUR, founded by Günter Titsch, is the world’s 

leading organizer of international choir competitions and festivals. The event series have 

meanwhile become known throughout the world for their high artistic and organizational 

standards. INTERKULTUR is a concept for choirs all over the world and their excitement about 

its competitions and festivals is constantly growing. 

Since more than 30 years singers and choirs from all over the world have been celebrating 

international choral music with INTERKULTUR in different cities and on different continents. 

Whether the Palau de la Música in Barcelona or the Konzerthaus Vienna, whether dream 

destinations in South Africa or Vietnam; wherever they go, participants will experience a 

peaceful, world-spanning festival of singing and intercultural choral music on a high artistic 

level. Friendship Concerts and joint singing events complete the great emotional impact of 

INTERKULTUR’s international choral meetings. 

INTERKULTUR unites nations. In 2004 and 2006 – following long negotiations – the organization 

was able to bring choirs from North and South Korea together on stage. Also choirs from 

countries like Israel and Iran keep coming together at the choir festivals and light a beacon of 

peace in Friendship Concerts. 

Participation is the highest honor. INTERKULTUR´s biggest success to date was to bring the 

antique Olympic idea to the choral community. The Choir Olympics 2000 in Linz, Austria was 

the beginning of a Choir Olympic movement, which goes around the world until today: Its story 

of success continues with subsequent events in Busan, Republic of Korea in 2002 and Bremen, 

Germany in 2004, and as of 2006 under the name “World Choir Games” in Xiamen, China; Graz, 

Austria in 2008; Shaoxing, China in 2010; Cincinnati, USA in 2012; Riga, Latvia in 2014 and the 

Winter Olympics City of Sochi, Russia in 2016. The 10 th anniversary edition of the World Choir 

Games in 2018 happened on African soil for the first time: Tshwane in South Africa attracted 

more than 300 choirs and more than 16,000 participants in July 2018. Due to the worldwide 

COVID-19 pandemic the 11 th edition of the World Choir Games hosted by the cities of Antwerp 

and Ghent in Belgium had to be postponed from July 2020 to the fall 2021. For the first time in the 

event’s history these Games took place as a hybrid event with live competitions in Flanders and 

an additional Virtual Competitions part. 

The 12 th and 13 th World Choir Games are inviting choirs from around the world to Gangneung, 

Republic of Korea in summer 2023 and to Auckland, New Zealand in July 2024.

Since 2007 INTERKULTUR has been transferring the idea of the World Choir Games also 

to different continents: The Asia Pacific Choir Games took place for the 4 th time already in 

October 2017. Host city was the Sri Lankan capital Colombo. In 2013 the European Choir 

Games premiered in Graz, Austria. Subsequent editions of the event were held in Magdeburg, 

Germany (2015) and in the Latvian capital Riga (2017), along with the Grand Prix of Nations, 

which addresses international top choirs. In August 2019 choirs from all over the world met in 

Gothenburg (Sweden) for the 4 th edition of the Grand Prix of Nations & European Choir Games. 

The next editions of the European Choir Games will happen in Norrköping, Sweden in the fall of 

2023 and in Aarhus, Denmark in 2025. 

The Idea 

INTERKULTUR has become the symbol for a unique artistic idea: In comparison to traditional 

meritorious choir competitions that only invite international elite choirs to take part, the 

INTERKULTUR competitions are open to all non-professional choirs. Choirs from all over the 

world, interested in gaining international festival and competition experience, can compete 

according to their level of artistic achievement. INTERKULTUR has opened a door to new 

impulses and perspectives for the national and international choral movement. 

The Competitions 

There are various categories for all types and levels of choirs in different degrees of difficulty, 

with or without compulsory pieces. The competitions offer good, competitive conditions, 

valuable, artistic contacts, various workshops and seminars, as well as practice opportunities 

with international performers. More than 200 experts and leading choirmasters from all over the 

world guarantee a high level of expertise in all INTERKULTUR events. 

Evaluation System 

The jury awards Bronze, Silver, and Gold Diplomas on 10 levels at INTERKULTUR competitions 

according to the MUSICA MUNDI® evaluation system (30-points-system); and Bronze, Silver 

and Gold Medals at the World Choir Games, the Asia Pacific Choir Games, the European Choir 

Games and the Grand Prix of Nations according to the World Choir Games evaluation system 

(100-points-system). In each category, a Winner or Champion is determined and outstanding 

achievements are honored with Special Prizes. In some competitions there is a Grand Prize 

Competition of the best choirs selected by the international jury which determines the overall 

winner of the competition.

The Pedagogical Concept 

INTERKULTUR events are not only competitions and international choir festivals, but also 

serve as professional development such as providing feedback from various pedagogical 

offerings. In Evaluation Performances or Individual Coachings, choirs have the chance to work 

with international jury members and gain advice on their current level of achievement, receive 

proficient pedagogical and artistic information and obtain suggestions as to how to interpret the 

chosen piece. The MUSICA MUNDI® Choir Academy gives new impetus especially to young choir 

conductors in China. 

Every two years the World Choir Council consisting of currently 128 members representing 

92 countries and regions comes together during the World Choir Games to discuss the choral 

scenes in their respective home countries. These meetings make an important contribution to 

the development of the international choral scene. 

Locations of Festivals and Competitions 

To date, INTERKULTUR events have taken place in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Croatia, 

France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Malaysia, Malta, 

Netherlands, People’s Republic of China, South Africa, Portugal, Philippines, Republic of Korea, 

Russia, Serbia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Thailand, USA and Vietnam. Many cities have been 

convinced of the success of INTERKULTUR events and establish regular choir festivals or apply 

repeatedly to host more unifying major events. 

The Participants 

In total, roughly 10,500 choirs with almost 450,000 active singers from 108 countries have taken 

part in the INTERKULTUR competitions to date. An interesting note is that more than half of the 

participants have been children and youth up to 27 years of age and 67% of the participating 

choirs are returning ensembles looking forward to new destinations and new choral challenges. 

Many of them constantly increase their achievements – from first little successes to a Gold Medal 

or the sought-after Champions title. 

Means of Support 

In accordance with its statutes, INTERKULTUR supports the following activities: 

• International music festivals and choir competitions whose goal is to bring together choirs 

from different regions of the world and encourage international collaboration through mutual 

respect, as well as to contribute to cultural exchange and understanding among nations 

• Children and youth choirs even from financially challenged countries 

• Non-professional choirs that focus on the growth of youth development 

• Young, talented choirmasters, young musicians and 

singers through the support of scholarship awards 

• Specific sponsorship opportunities

Lisbon is the capital and the largest city of Portugal. With over 20 centuries of history, this city 

located on the seven hills has more than 500,000 inhabitants. 

Lisbon shows multiple contrasts between the historical and modern, combining different cultures, 

trends and lifestyles. Situated near the Tagus river and sunny almost all the time, the Portuguese 

capital has a unique beauty and an internationally acclaimed architectural singularity. 

Rich in monuments, neighborhoods (Baixa Pombalina, Belém, Bairro Alto, Chiado, Bica, Alfama 

and Mouraria), riverside zone, Fado houses, parks, gardens and viewpoints, Lisbon offers various 

possibilities to discover, so visit and enjoy the vast natural, historic and cultural city heritage. 

Landmarks such as the Medieval Castle of St. George, Medieval Cathedral, Belém Tower, 

Jeronimos Monastery, National Pantheon, Palace Square and the Downtown are some of the 

tourist attractions of Lisbon that fascinate thousands of visitors from around the world. 

The gastronomy of Lisbon is very influenced by its proximity to the sea. So typical specialties in 

Lisbon are fried cod, fried green beans, and grilled sardines on bread (mainly in the feast of the 

popular saints that occurs during the month of June). The famous Bife à Café is also considered 

a capital's "ex-libris" food. The most famous dessert in Lisbon is the traditional Pastel de Nata 

(custard tart), made in a former factory in Belém, better known as Pastel de Belém.

CHOIR MUSIC IN PORTUGAL 

The Lisbon National Conservatory of Music instituted with the changes in its curriculum in 1930 

that singing, learning to play instruments and composition was incorporated in its courses. With 

the Decree nº18881, it was decided that choral music, chamber music and orchestra were to be 

obligatory for all the music students. 

In the meantime, the choral movement in Portugal began to be active in the ´60s and the ´70s 

although there were already existing choirs before, since choir singing, orchestra and chamber 

music were already obligatory in the conservatories and schools of music. 

In Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra, Faro and other cities all over Portugal, choirs began to flourish and 

to have an active and important role in the musical and cultural life of the cities. Church choirs 

have always been indispensable ever since, during the Mass celebrations, Christmas and Easter 

festivities. 

At the moment, in Portugal, there exist mixed choirs, female choirs, male choirs and children´s 

choirs . 

Lisbon has two professional choirs namely: “Teatro São Carlos Opera Choir” and “the Gulbenkian 

Choir”.

VENUES 

Universidade de Lisboa - Aula Magna 

The University of Lisbon (Universidade de Lisboa) is the largest and most prestigious 

university in Portugal and is one of Europe’s leading universities. 

The Aula Magna will be the main venue for LISBON SINGS. With a total capacity of 1584 

seats, Aula Magna is host to hundreds of events and is now welcoming singers from all 

over the world on its stage for competitions and the ceremonies. 

Museu Nacional da Música 

During the LISBON SINGS 2022 selected 

choirs will be invited by the local chamber 

choir “Coro de Câmara de Lisboa“ to sing 

in a Friendship Concert in a special location 

– the national music museum (Museu 

Nacional da Música). 

The Music Museum is an institution under 

the Directorate-General for Cultural 

Heritage (Direcção-Geral do Património 

Cultural) housing one of the richest instrument 

collections in Europe, along with 

documents, an iconography collection and 

a sound archive. 

It has been open to the public since July 

26, 1994 in the underground station of Alto 

dos Moinhos and aims to preserve and 

maintain its collection, while at the same 

time make it available for research, education 

and diversion to all those who are 

interested.

Auditorio Orlando Ribeiro 

The Orlando Ribeiro Library, in Solar da 

Nora, right in the historical centre of Telheiras 

pays tribute to the Portugese geographer 

Orlando Ribeiro, who during the 

oppression turned his attention to showing 

the importance of diversity. Inspired by 

him, who was also known for his countryside 

diaries, his vast photograph collection 

and his love for music, we can find among 

others a unique catalogue of 22.000 CDs 

and DVDs of all music categories in his library. 

While this library is located in an old 

manor house, the modern extension connected 

to the manor house by a covered 

bridge hosts a modern auditorium that 

regularly holds concerts and shows of artistic 

nature, colloquia or conferences, as 

well as other activities of public interest.

Museu Nacional do Azulejo 

Lisbon is known worldwide for its Azulejos - colorful ceramic tiles that cover house fronts 

and walls. They show typical patterns, but also depict historical scenes and cityscapes 

as well as tales. Situated in the former cloister “Convento Madre de Deus“, the national 

museum of ceramic tiles (Museu Nacional do Azulejo) introduces with its impressive 

collection the history and functions of ceramic tiles since the 15 th century. Participating 

choirs of the ON STAGE LISBON 2022 will be guided through the exhibition and learn 

about the history of Lisbon while stopping in central spaces of the museum to perform 

choir music. Visitors of the museum are welcome to join the performances. 

Basílica da Estrela 

Located on a hill in the west of the city, the Basílica da Estrela can be seen from afar and 

is one of the city's landmarks. As a result of a promise made by Queen Maria I, should she 

give birth to a son, would she have a church built, the basilica was errected in late Baroque 

and Neoclassical style from 1779 to 1790. The central nave and the six side chapels 

are richly decorated with marble, gold and figurines and end in a large dome from 

which one not only has a beautiful view of the park opposite, but of the whole city.

The Casa do Alentejo is situated on the Rua das Portas do Santo Antão. From the outside 

the house looks very inconspicuous, but once you get into the main entrance hall you 

will need a moment to take in the beauty of the colorful walls and the high glass ceiling. 

The building that was constructed in the 17 th century, was the residence of the Paes de 

Amaral family, or the viscounts of Alverca. Later the building was used as a school, a furniture 

store and in the early 20 th century the first casino of the city. Nowadays the building 

is used as a cultural center and social club. The interior includes a ballroom, decorated 

with mirrors, sculptures of allegorical figures, and a large ceiling fresco, as well as a restaurant, 

a library and games room that all enclose a splendid patio that seems to open 

up to the sky through a glass ceiling and features traditional tiled walls and palm trees. 

During "Lisbon Sings" we will use the Casa do Alentejo as a meeting point for the final 

dinner, to come together and celebrate the results of your hard work in the competitions.

Johan Rooze estudou piano e dirigiu o 

conservatório de Utrecht nos Países Baixos. 

Foi posteriormente para os Estados Unidos, 

tendo-se especializado em Piano Jazz, Canto 

e Arranjos. Fundou e foi durante 23 anos, o 

Diretor Musical do grupo vocal “Dekoor” da 

Universidade de Utrecht tendo ganho vários 

prémios como o Festival Coral da Holanda, o 

Festival Vocal Internacional e ainda o “Idols 

for choir” TV show, “Korenslag” 2007 nos 

Paises Baixos. Foi maestro da orquestra e 

coro estudantil Utrecht Student Symphonic 

Choir and Orchestra. Viajou com os seus 

coros por todo o mundo. Fundou o grupo 

“Dudok-Ensemble”, um excelente projeto 

coral, dirigiu as Bach Cantatas mensais em 

Utrecht e foi o maestro convidado do Coro 

da Radio Nacional. Foi professor de Jazz 

Vocal, Direção e Arranjos no Conservatório 

de Roterdão e Alkmaar, membro do Conselho

professional Daegu Students Choir. É 

frequentemente maestro convidado de vários 

coros. A par com o seu trabalho a nível coral, 

desempenha também um papel muito ativo 

como pianista de Jazz e em arranjos musicais. 

Trabalha como Diretor Artístico para a 

"Interkultur" e é frequentemente convidado 

como orador, consultor e workshop-leader a 

nível internacional. 

Johan Rooze studied Piano and Conducting at 

the Utrecht Conservatory, the Netherlands. 

Later he went to the U.S. to specialize in 

Jazz Piano, Singing and Arranging. He was 

founder and 23 years Musical Director of the 

Utrecht University Vocal Group “Dekoor”. 

They won many prices, The Dutch Choir 

Festival, The International Vocal Group 

Festival and the “Idols for choir” TV show, 

“Korenslag” 2007 in the Netherlands. He was 

Conductor of the Utrecht Student Symphonic 

Choir and Orchestra. With his choirs he 

toured all over the world. He founded the 

“Dudok-Ensemble”, an outstanding project 

choir, conducted the monthly Bach Cantatas 

in Utrecht and was guest conductor with the 

National Radio Choir. He was Professor for 

Vocal Jazz, Conducting and Arranging at the 

Conservatories of Rotterdam and Alkmaar, a 

member of the board of Musical Advisors for 

the Dutch Royal Christian Music Association 

and Artistic Director for the International 

Choir Festival, Netherlands 2005. 

In 2008 he moved to South Korea where he 

teaches Choral Music and Jazz Piano at the 

Yeongnam University. He is musical director 

of Y"Yaenoeul Jazz Singers" and in 2010 he 

founded the professional "Daegu Students 

Choir". He is a frequent guest conductor with 

other choirs. Besides his choral work he is 

very active as a Jazz Pianist and Arranger. He 

works as Artistic Director for “Interkultur” 

and is a frequently asked adjudicator, speaker 

and workshop-leader internationally.

Primož Kerštanj formou-se no conservatório 

de Música de Ljubljana tendo estudado 

na Academia de Música da Universidade 

de Ljubljana. Como cargo profissional, 

atualmente leciona piano e solfejo na Willems 

Music Center DO RE MI Bled, onde também 

dirige o coro infantil DO RE MI and the vocal 

group DO RE MI. Kerštanj especializou-se 

no trabalho com crianças com necessidades 

especiais e com perturbações do espectro 

autista.Dirigiu inúmeros coros durante a sua 

carreira: o coro feminino Milko Škoberne 

female choir Jesenice, Vox Carniolus e de 

2000 a 2010, a academia Akademski pevski 

zbor France Prešeren Kranj. De 2006 a 2014 

dirigiu o coro Dekliški pevski zbor Gimnazije 

Kranj tendo elevado o seu desempenho a um 

nível alto de qualidade. 

Primož Kerštanj foi galardoado com o prémio 

de Melhor Maestro na competição em Riva 

del Garda em 2007 e em Calella/Barcelona 

em 2013. O coro feminino Carmen manet é 

um dos três coros que Primož Kerštanj dirige 

atualmente. Umas das conquistas mais 

importantes do coro foram obtidas no Grande 

Prémio em Montreux - 50 th Montreux Choral 

Festival em Abril de 2014 e a Placa de Ouro 

em abril de 2016 na competiçao nacional em 

Maribor. Em 2017 o coro Carmen conquistou 

o prémio "Eurovision Choir of the Year 2017" 

com transmissão para 12 países na Europa. 

Primož Kerštanj é ainda compositor, 

músico e júri altamente requisitado a nível 

internacional. 

Primož Kerštanj graduated from the 

Conservatory of Music in Ljubljana and has 

studied at Ljubljana University, Academy 

of Music. His current professional position 

is teaching piano and solfeggio at Willems 

Music Center DO RE MI Bled, where he 

also conducts the children‘s choir DO RE 

MI and the vocal group DO RE MI. Kerštanj 

is specialized in working with children with 

special needs and children with autistic 

spectrum disorder. He has conducted 

several choirs in his career: "Milko Škoberne 

female choir Jesenice", "Vox Carniolus" 

and from 2000 to 2010 "Akademski pevski 

zbor France Prešeren Kranj". He has been 

directing "Dekliški pevski zbor Gimnazije 

Kranj" from 2006 to 2014 and has brought it 

to a high quality level. 

Primož Kerštanj was awarded as best 

conductor in the competitions in Riva del 

Garda in 2007 and in Calella/Barcelona in 

2013. The female choir "Carmen manet" 

is one of the three choirs Primož Kerštanj 

conducts nowadays. Most important 

achievements of the choir was winning the 

Grand Prix at 50 th Montreux Choral Festival 

in April 2014 and a gold plaque in the 

Slovenian national competition in Maribor 

in April 2016. 2017 Carmen manet became 

"Eurovision Choir of the Year 2017" which was 

broadcasted on TV in 12 European countries.

Mia Makaroff é compositora, música, 

professora de música e maestrina de 

coro. Formou-se em 2003 na Academia 

Sibelius com mestrado em música - Music 

Education Studies. A sua experiência 

profissional inclui ensino de música 

em escolas e trabalhos com coros 

e composição, estando envolvida na 

criação e direção de diferentes projetos 

musicais. Vários grupos e muitos coros 

de renome divulgaram a música de Mia 

Makaroff junto a um público mais vasto 

como por ex. Rajaton, King's Singers, 

Cantus, Amarcord e outros. Mia M. tem 

também estado envolvida em vários 

projetos nacionais e internacionais como 

por ex. ”Song Bridge”, o musical bilingue 

”Crown Children”, a missa ”Diligam Te” 

e ”The New Carmina”. Realizou ainda 

Master Classes de composição para coros 

infantis na Bélgica, Itália e Rússia. Mia 

Makaroff desempenhou ainda o papel 

de júri e oradora em competições de 

coros e festivais, como por ex. no 10th 

World Choral Games em Tshwane na 

Africa do Sul. Os seus temas favoritos 

são a criatividade, ritmo e melhoria da 

comunicação, nutrindo também grande 

interesse pela música de Teatro. 

Mia Makaroff is a composer, arranger, 

music teacher and a choral conductor. 

In 2003, she graduated from the Sibelius 

Academy as a Master of Music in Music 

Education studies. Her work experience 

includes teaching music in schools, 

working with choirs, composing, creating 

and conducting different music projects. 

Many well-known song groups and choirs 

have brought Mia Makaroff’s music to 

a wider audience, such as ”Rajaton”, 

”King's Singers”, ”Cantus”, ”Amarcord” 

and others. She has been involved in 

many national and international projects, 

such as ”Song Bridge”, bilingual musical 

”Crown Children”, the mass ”Diligam Te” 

and ”The New Carmina”. Further she 

has held master classes of composing 

for children choirs in Belgium, Italy and 

Russia. Mia Makaroff has also worked as 

a juror and a lecturer in choir competitions 

and festivals, for example in the 10 th 

World Choral Games in Tshwane in South 

Africa. Her favorite themes are creativity, 

rhythmics and enhancing communication. 

Also theatre music is one big interest of 

hers.

Pedro Teixeira é um dos mais destacados 

maestros de coro em Portugal. É desde 2021 

Maestro Adjunto do “Coro Casa da Música” 

(Porto, Portugal), e foi Maestro Titular do 

“Coro de la Comunidad de Madrid” entre 2012 

e 2018. Nascido em Lisboa, obteve o grau de 

Mestre em Direção Coral na Escola Superior 

de Música de Lisboa, e é conhecido no meio 

coral pelas suas interpretações perspicazes e 

sensíveis. Desde a sua criação em 2001, Pedro 

dirige o “Officium Ensemble”, grupo dedicado 

à interpretação de polifonia renascentista 

portuguesa. Tem dirigido repetidas vezes 

o Officium Ensemble em prestigiados 

festivais internacionais de música antiga 

tais como “Oude Muziek Utrecht”, ou “Laus 

Polyphoniaæ” em Antuérpia. Teixeira dedicase 

também à música contemporânea, 

apresentando várias estreias mundiais por 

temporada, como maestro titular do “Coro 

Ricercare” desde 2001. É desde 1997 diretor 

artístico das Jornadas Escola de Música da 

Sé de Évora. Para além de ser professor na 

Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa, Pedro 

lidera várias masterclasses e cursos de verão. 

É também regularmente convidado como júri 

em concursos internacionais de coros. Desde 

2018, Pedro dirigiu o “Coro Gulbenkian” 

como maestro convidado em várias ocasiões 

e palcos. Ao longo da sua carreira, Pedro 

preparou coros em colaboração com 

maestros tais como John Nelson, Enrico 

Onofri, Lorenzo Viotti, Riccardo Muti e Esa- 

Pekka Salonen. 

Pedro Teixeira is one of Portugal’s foremost 

choral conductors. Between 2012 and 2018 

he was the Director of “Coro de la Comunidad 

de Madrid”, and since 2022 he has been the 

adjacent conductor of “Coro Casa da Música” 

in Porto, Portugal. Born in Lisbon, he attained 

a Masters degree in Choral Conducting 

at Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa, and 

has become widely known in the choral world 

for his insightful and sensitive performances. 

Since its inception in 2001, Teixeira conducts 

“Officium Ensemble”, an ensemble dedicated 

to the interpretation of renaissance Portuguese 

polyphony. He has performed widely 

with Officium Ensemble in prestigious early 

music festivals such as “Oude Muziek” (Utrecht) 

or “Laus Polyphoniæ” (Antwerp). Teixeira 

is also dedicated to contemporary music 

and, as the Director of “Coro Ricercare” since 

2001, conducts several world premieres per 

season. For 24 years he has been the Artistic 

Director of the international workshop “Evora 

Cathedral Music School”. Besides being a 

teacher at Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa, 

he also leads several masterclasses and 

summer schools, and is invited regularly to 

adjudicate in several international choir competitions. 

Since 2018, Pedro has conducted 

the “Gulbenkian Choir” in several occasions 

and venues as guest conductor. Moreover, 

Teixeira has prepared choirs in collaboration 

with conductors such as John Nelson, Enrico 

Onofri, Lorenzo Viotti, Riccardo Muti and Esa- 

Pekka Salonen.

Lisbon is known worldwide for its Azulejos - colorful ceramic tiles that cover house fronts 

and interiors alike. They show typical patterns, but also depict historical scenes and 

cityscapes as well as tales. 

Situated in the former cloister “Convento Madre de Deus“, the national museum of 

ceramic tiles “Museu Nacional do Azulejo” introduces with its impressive collection the 

history and functions of ceramic tiles since the 15 th century. 

In this setting the participants of the ON STAGE LISBON 2022 will explore this unique part 

of Lisbon’s history and fill it with music.

SING A SONG FOR OUR EARTH 

In this 90 minutes workshop you will get to 

know each other, talk about our earth and 

contribute to a little song that you will sing 

together. Mia Makaroff will do short warm-ups 

by circle singing and movements. Afterwards you 

try to express yourselves through music, 

singing in the languages you can use. 

The easy song is pre-written by Mia Makaroff 

and every age group can participate in their 

own way. Some improvisation might 

also happen!

from Portugal and take a musical souvenir 

back home. 

In this 90 minutes ineractive session 

Pedro Teixeira will work with you on two easy 

compositions by Fernando Lopes-Graça: 

"Do varão nasceu a vara" and "Deus lhe dê 

cá boas noites" and will fill you in on what to 

consider for an authentic interpretation.
