Community News Update
Message from Mayor Lake
The Federal Budget
Last week, the Federal Government handed down its first
budget for the Parliamentary term, and I am happy to see
that funding support has been allocated to Councils to create
stronger, more liveable communities. The budget included
a $250 million expansion of the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure
Program, an extra $100 million in Financial Assistance Grants and $200 million
per year for disaster mitigation from 2023-24. Additionally, funding has also
been allocated to support aged care, health, education, social housing, first
home buyers and the roll out of childcare subsidies for families which will raise
the maximum subsidy rate cap to 90 percent. I welcome this announcement
by the Federal Government and will continue to work closely with my federal
counterparts to ensure that Council is advocating on these policies and takes up
any opportunities that are presented to us for the benefit of our community.
Country Women’s Association Annual General Meeting
I recently attended the Annual General Meeting of the Country Women’s
Association (CWA) Greystanes Branch. Most people think the Country Women’s
Association are just known for their great baking skills. But over the last 100 years
they have made a significant contribution to our community by providing health
services, education programs and acting as a voice for women and children
living in rural areas of Australia. It was wonderful to talk to the women and learn
more about what the CWA has accomplished for the broader community.
Your Rates at Work
Potholes continue to be filled across Cumberland City and staff are marking
out sections of roads which require heavy patching. Works completed include:
• The repairs of 122 potholes
• The cleaning of 943km of roads
• The cleaning of three stormwater pits
Council is in the process of upgrading Granville
Park Fields 3, 4, and 5. The irrigation update
was also completed recently. The next stage
will be the top dressing of the playing surfaces,
which will be undertaken on completion of all
floodlighting works.
Macca’s gets green light
Northmead McDonald’s will be able to permanently operate 24 hours a day
ELLIE BUSBY
Northmead residents will soon get
24/7 access to Big Macs after a plan to
extend the McDonald’s opening hours
was approved – but some locals aren’t happy.
When COVID first hit, the popular Northmead
McDonald’s was able to extend its
hours and become a 24/7 premises between
March 2020 and March 2022. Now that the
trial period is over, the fast-food eatery at
225 Windsor Road is hoping to permanently
return to 24/7 operational hours, seven days
a week.
The application was recently discussed at
a Parramatta Local Planning Panel (LPP)
meeting, after the Council received a total of
14 submissions in regard to the proposal.
The LPP revealed some locals were
concerned that the proposed changes would
lead to an increase in noise, anti-social
behaviour, odour and light pollution in the
surrounding neighbourhood.
Northmead resident Gui Xiong, who is
against the plans, said the Development
Application (DA) is not in the interest of the
local residents.
“I spoke to community members and I had
a petition objecting the DA, I had a total of 38
signatures from members of the local area
surrounding who did not wish for the DA to go
ahead,” she said.
The McDonald’s at 225 Windsor Road, Northmead, will soon return to 24/7 service. Photo: Melissa Stevens.
“There were several concerns, such as environmental
factors… there were also concerns
of noise and lighting.”
One LPP member raised concerns that the
environment has changed since the trial
during COVID and that there were a lot of
restrictions on late-night partying at the time,
which “might not be the case” now.
In response, a spokesperson for the applicant
said the DA had been referred to NSW
Police, who supported it and didn’t have any
concerns.
“Council planners requested information
from NSW Police in relation to that informal
trading period to see if there had been any
alcohol-related incidents at the site, which
hasn’t occurred… there’s been no incidents of
any intoxicated behaviour, anti-social behaviour,”
Yannis Comino from SLR Consulting
said on behalf of McDonald’s.
“If there’s loud noise in the parking area
McDonald’s staff will request the customers
to be quieter or move on, if there’s incidents
of that progressing then it gets escalated and
the store would contact the police, who [they]
have a good working relationship with.”
The Hills Police Area Command also
provided recommendations to help the
application get approved, including raising
the height of fences to help limit the impact of
noise and lighting on the surrounding area.
Members of the LPP ruled that the plan
would “not create adverse impacts” in the
local area, unanimously approving the extension
of the Northmead McDonald’s hours to
24 hours.
Celebrating two years of Parra News
Melbourne Cup day may offer the race that
stops the nation, but for us here at Parra News,
it serves as a different kind of celebration.
This publication launched on Melbourne
Cup day two years ago, and has now settled as
a leading provider of local news and information
to residents in the Parramatta and Cumberland
Local Government Areas.
The paper launched after the first lockdown,
and then survived through the second, all
thanks to our readers and advertisers who
have continued to support us.
Local newspapers remain vitally important
to the areas they represent. Too many areas
are without a local paper these days, and they
are all the poorer for it.
Without a local paper, there’s little scrutiny
of what’s going on at Council, or with the local
MPs, or with different organisations within
the community. Those doing good aren’t recognised
as they were in the past, which means
others aren’t inspired to follow them.
Thank you for the last two years, and here’s
to many years ahead!
Trucks become a necessary evil
Charlotte welcomes me into her home in
Winston Hills.
A few metres away, the Friday afternoon traffic
zooms past on Windsor Road. In fact, it’s
why I am summoned. Trucks are flying down,
she says, at all hours of the day and night, preventing
her from sleep.
“I once walked from here to the traffic lights
to get to the other side of the road for a coffee,”
she explains.
“In that time, I counted 52 trucks. Fifty-two!
The speed that they go, the kerosene they use
… if you want something done, what do you
do?”
There’s no escaping that trucks are a fact of
life in a modern city.
Supermarket shelves need to be stocked,
furniture transported and parcels distributed.
But this comes with serious side effects for local
residents.
Authorities are grappling with the problem.
For example, most trucks have been banned
along segments of Pennant Hills Road, forcing
drivers to use NorthConnex. However, rising
freight tolls mean trucks are increasingly resorting
to whatever arterial roads they can find
or doing rat runs through suburban streets.
The Parramatta region is a hotspot given the
rise in construction and economic activity.
Charlotte says the problem has gotten much
worse since she moved here in 2009.
She tried planting bushes in her front garden
to block some of the noise.
Leading me to her back porch, which is undercover
and quite far from the main road, she
tells me her beloved items are often covered
Trucks contribute four per cent of Australia’s
carbon emissions.
However, they also have a direct impact on
quality of life by emitting nitrogen oxides and
particulate matter. As diesel is burned by truck
engines, this creates microscopic solids that
can enter people’s lungs and even their bloodstreams.
Needless to say, this is not good for us and
even more worrying when we can’t see it happening.
A report published recently by the Grattan
Institute has estimated that exhaust-pipe pollutants
from trucks kill more than 400 Australians
every year.
They can cause or contribute to lung and
bladder cancer, stroke, heart disease, pneumonia,
asthma and type-2 diabetes.
Part of the problem is that local trucks are
among the dirtiest in the developed world. The
Grattan Institute found the average age of an
Australian truck is 15 years; many have been
wheezing along for decades longer. Roughly,
one-quarter of the fleet was sold before 2003,
when freight vehicle pollution standards were
virtually non-existent.
Significantly lagging behind the European
Union, UK, US and Japan, Australia is moving
to address this by phasing in what is known as
the ‘Euro 6’ emissions standard for new trucks
and buses from November 2024.
This will effectively halve the amount of particulate
matter and nitrogen oxides that a vehicle
can discharge. It is forecast $6.4 billion will
be saved over 25 years from costs associated
with premature deaths and chronic illnesses.
But Australia can go further by imposing
sales targets for zero-emissions trucks and
tightening standards on engines, tyres and requirements
on manufacturers to include the
latest fuel-saving enhancements.
Many cities, including London, Tokyo, Beijing,
Barcelona and Madrid, have even imposed
bans on the dirtiest trucks through
so-called low emissions zones, protecting
densely populated areas from inhaling harmful
pollutants.
As for residents like Charlotte exasperated by
all the noise?
Right now, most complaints disappear into a
bureaucratic vortex.
It’s unclear whether responsibility falls under
the Environmental Protection Authority,
local council, police, or a combination of
all three. When you’re tossing and turning at
night, it’s also unfeasible to be out on the road
in your dressing gown noting down number
plates.
France has introduced “sound radars” in
several cities and towns to photograph and
fine noisy motorbike drivers.
An acoustic camera initiative is also underway
in parts of central London.
It’s an area where technology is constantly
evolving.
The alternative is to pack up and move. But
these are the growing pains of Parramatta as
we continue the struggle to a greener future.
Data breaches highlight need
for cautious approach online
EMILY FESZCZUK
The digital age has reinvented how
society operates but it has increased
the risk of criminals targeting people’s
personal data.
Recent attacks on Optus and Medibank
demonstrate no one is safe and experts are
urging people and businesses to use Cyber
Security Awareness Month as a reminder to
make sure their information is secure.
Director of Tresami Computer Engineering
in western Sydney, Lee Banister believes there
are a few main reasons why cyber crime is
becoming increasingly common.
“COVID meant that many businesses moved
employees to work from home setups which
has created security issues for businesses, as
business data is being accessed from personal
devices and non-secure networks,” Mr Banister
said.
“Cyber crime losses in the U.S. went up from
$4.2 billion in 2020 to $6.9 billion in 2021, and
I have heard that you can buy packs for less
than $50 on the dark web which give you the
software tools to start an attack so the more
money can be made, the more people want to
be part of it.”
Lee Banister shares his tips to keep secure online. Photo: Melinda Jane.
With human error being one of the biggest
threats, people are reminded to keep potential
scams at front of mind and always be cautious
when contacted via phone, social networks or
emails, especially those with links.
“Being careful about how much information
you share on social media is important
because scammers use something called
social engineering where they go online and
find out your name or date of birth which is
half the security information that is needed to
get into accounts,” he said.
“Websites are always going to get hacked but
choosing passwords that are difficult to guess
and not using the same one for every account
is helpful. Creating unique passwords means
if one site gets hacked they don’t have access
to all of your other accounts.”
With many businesses in Parramatta, Mr
Banister said companies must take all reasonable
steps to comply with its obligations to
prevent data breaches occurring.
“Too many businesses hold on to too much
personal information of customers which just
lends them to losing that information. Some
might store identification documents when it
could just be sighted to validate something,”
he said.
“A business should ensure that data is held
securely and the access is limited to only those
who require access because if you limit the
access you are limiting your attack surface.”
Business owners should be using up to date
software and security systems.
“Email remains the primary method used to
conduct attacks so businesses should implement
a secure gateway which scans all email
and makes sure that threats are not reaching
the users’ inbox,” he said.
Stars of Western Sydney
A huge thank you to everyone who donated to the
Cancer Council NSW’s ‘Stars of Western Sydney –
I feel very proud to be one of the local leaders to take
part in this fundraising campaign. I want to thank all
who donated and helped me reach my fundraising
goal of more than $5,000. Your donations support
the Cancer Council’s world-class research, prevention,
advocacy and support services.
Hindu New Year Annakut Celebrations
I attended the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha Hindu
New Year Annakut Celebrations on Wednesday
26 October.
The day after Diwali marks the beginning of the Hindu
New Year. On this day, an Annakut, or a ‘Mountain of
Food,’ is offered to Bhagwan as a symbol of appreciation
and gratitude.
This year was a special event, being the 100th birth
anniversary of His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj.
It was great to celebrate with our community in the
main hall at Rosehill Gardens, where a grand
offering of food was displayed.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Donna Davis recently
attended Hindu New Year Annakut celebrations at Rosehill
LOCAL NEWS
“Hard days to come”: Labor’s
tough Budget night message
CicciaBella
Finance Minister Katy Gallagher, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Treasurer Jim
Chalmers in Canberra on Budget day last week.
EMILY FESZCZUK & ELLIE BUSBY
Jim Chalmers handed down Labor’s
first Budget in nearly 10 years last Tuesday
night, stating it was a “solid and
sensible Budget” but warning there were
tough times ahead for Australians.
The Federal Treasurer outlined measures
that he believes suit the conditions of a challenging
period for the country, but some
say it does not do enough to support those
struggling the most.
“Australians know there are hard days to
come, and hard decisions to accompany
them,” he warned.
“Getting through this period stronger than
we were before will rely on the best of our
character – our resilience, our pragmatism,
our cooperation and our confidence, and
above all, our belief in each other.”
At $36.9 billion, the 2022-23 deficit is less
than half the $78 billion forecast in the
Budget early this year, which has improved
due to higher prices being paid for the country’s
natural resource exports.
Appealing to families, a five-point plan
for cost-of-living relief addressed cheaper
childcare with $4.7 billion being spent over
four years to increase subsidies and $530
million to increase paid parental leave to 26
weeks by 2026. Cheaper medicine was also
on the agenda with the cost of a PBS maximum
general co-payment slashed to $30
a script, and a goal of building one million
new homes over five years from 2024.
Skills and education are a focus for the
Government in a bid to help build the economy.
“Together with the states and territories,
we are making a $1 billion investment in
fee-free TAFE and vocational education
places,” Mr Chalmers said.
“This Budget also invests more than $770
million for better schools… and we will
invest $485 million to create 20,000 new
university places over the next two years for
students from disadvantaged backgrounds.”
Mr Chalmers said a spending audit has
also helped identify $22 billion in savings
over the next four years.
Partner in the Business Services team at
BDO’s western Sydney office, Peter Tracey
said there is some conditions implemented
to assist further improvements.
“They are providing additional funding to
the ATO with the hope of collecting additional
revenue from all taxpayers so businesses
and individuals should have their tax
compliance affairs in order,” Mr Tracey said.
“They are changing the age eligibility
for the Downsizer Contribution from 60
to 55 years of age to encourage people to
downsize their home to get more money in
superannuation which they are hoping will
also help with the supply of property in the
market.”
Despite businesses struggling across the
board, Mr Tracey said the government
“lacked meaningful measures” to support
the industry domestically and failed to
approach tax reform.
“Staffing and skilled labour is a big issue
and they have increased the migration cap
from 160,000 to 195,000 but we will see if that
is enough to help with shortages,” he said.
“They have also kept in place the stage 3
tax cuts which are due to commence July 1,
2024, but there is time to readdress that if
they choose to.”
Member for Parramatta Andrew Charlton
said he is “proud” to have secured over $60
million for Parramatta from the Budget
and is excited to begin delivering on the
Albanese Government’s “promise of a better
future.”
“With funding for my election commitments
now secured, I’ll be working hard to
deliver on my campaign promises, such as
the development of a cultural precinct in
Harris Park, better aged care services at the
Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite community,
and a high-quality premier cricket facility at
the Richie Benaud Oval,” he said.
“I firmly believe that Parramatta is
perfectly positioned to become a global city,
and it’s my intention to help Parramatta
become one.”
Those wanting to rip down a
statue of Australia’s first Prime
Minister Sir Edmund Barton in Port
Macquarie should move on to their
next woke project. Barton was far
from perfect and very flawed, but his place in
history cannot simply be erased.
Congratulations to Kasey Badger
who became the first woman to
referee a men’s Rugby League
is consistently one of the best
match officials in the NRL, and it was a well-deserved
honour.
Congratulations to Brad Hazzard
Anyone who has worked with
the Health Minister says he is a
thoroughly decent man who took
his public service seriously. All the best in
retirement.
It feels like our politicians are
doing little to help tackle rising
power bills, other than remind us
that we’re about to get hit hard in
the coming year. This is serious
stuff, and many will face major problems over
ELLIE BUSBY
A
proposal for a 76-room hotel with a
rooftop bar in South Wentworthville
has been endorsed by Cumberland City
Council.
Plans for a new hotel at 245-247 Great Western
Highway are one step closer to approval, following
a recent Council meeting.
Proposed to reach a height of 27 metres, up
to six-storeys, the application seeks consent to
build the new facility as well as restore heritage
building ‘The Wattles’.
The proposed hotel will look to include a
rooftop bar/dining area, pool, gymnasium,
conference room, health and wellbeing centre.
The western side of the site plans to feature
basement car parking for 79 spaces plus six
motorcycle spots. However, the Cumberland
Development Control Plan (DCP) states that
a minimum of 106 parking spaces must be
provided for the proposed development.
The applicant also wants to turn Heritage-listed
‘The Wattles’ into a restaurant or a
café for the public to enjoy. Built between 1851
and 1875 as a private residence, the cottage is
historically significant as it is one of the earliest
houses in the Cumberland Local Government
Area (LGA).
Cumberland Councillor Glenn Elmore backed
the plans, stating that he didn’t believe ‘The
Wattles’ would get the renovation it needs if the
proposed hotel doesn’t go ahead.
“I thought to myself what is a suitable use for
this site and probably this motel and combination
is the only feasible use for it,” he said.
“In this situation I think it’s about the only
alternative we have, and if this doesn’t happen
probably the site will stay as it is for another 10,
20, 50 years.”
Calling it a commercial enterprise, Cr Michael
Zaiter said he would welcome more projects in
the local area like the planning proposal.
“It is an opportunity for this property to be
redeveloped potentially to provide some jobs for
the local area,” he said
“A hotel of this size will provide a number of
jobs for anyone who lives locally or close by.
“[The Wattles] has been totally underutilised
for many, many years and this particular
proposal may actually allow it to be used and
enhanced.”
However, in response to early consultation of
the proposal, Transport for NSW raised concerns
regarding safety issues, traffic volumes and
parking requirements. Council officers have
requested that the applicant provides further
information to address the issues voiced by
Transport for NSW.
Following the Council’s endorsement, the
planning proposal will now be forwarded to the
Department of Planning and Environment for
Gateway Determination.
LOCAL NEWS
Shining light on big issue
Modern slavery is often ignored in Australia, but it’s happening on our doorstep
ELLIE BUSBY
A
charity event in Parramatta
is looking to raise funds to
help Australians escape
modern slavery.
Although many may believe slavery
is a thing of the past, Freedom
for Humanity is seeking to remind
people that slavery still exists – both
overseas and in Australia.
On Thursday, November 3, the
charity will host a cocktail event at
Deloitte Parramatta to raise funds
for a new scholarship program that
focuses on enabling Australians to
escape modern slavery.
For Freedom for Humanity
Founder and CEO Anna Ruth,
the event is a great way to raise
awareness about slavery and create
discussion.
“We want to create awareness
of the issues, because not many
people know it’s happening western
Sydney, they just think it’s overseas,”
she said.
“As well as to support our new
program, which is a scholarship
program to empower those who
have escaped modern slavery and
human trafficking.
Freedom for Humanity will host a cocktail event in Parramatta.
“I always say awareness brings
change.”
With an estimated 50 million
people around the world being
forced into slavery, Ms Ruth believes
it’s important that people remember
that these statistics aren’t just
numbers – they’re “women and
children”.
“There are now 50 million slaves
around the world, that’s tens of
thousands of people in Australia,”
she said.
“However, in discussion with
experts many believe this is only the
tip of the iceberg [in terms of] the
numbers in Australia.”
Passionate about making a
difference, Ms Ruth said it was after
attending a conference where she
heard about missing children being
human trafficked that she knew she
had to do something.
“It was like a seed that planted
in me all those years ago… I have
this inner voice that tells me to do
events for charities and end human
trafficking and modern slavery,” she
said.
Now, after a difficult two years of
having to change cocktail events to
online summits, Ms Ruth is looking
forward to returning to in-person
events. She’s encouraging people to
buy tickets now for the ‘Thursday for
Freedom Cocktail Event’ for a great
night out while also helping making
a change for good.
“We’ve got some exciting raffle
prizes people have contributed
that will be amazing for people to
support,” she said.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity to
network, [enjoy] cocktails and canapes,
and to hear from speakers.”
Held at Level 19, 60 Station Street
in Parramatta, tickets for the event
will cost $75 and it runs from
5.30pm-7.30pm.
Big push for new garden
How community garden could help tackle rising cost-of-living pressures
ELLIE BUSBY
A
push for a community garden to be
established in a Lidcombe estate has
received the support of Cumberland
City Councillors.
As the cost-of-living continues to rise, residents
in Botanica Estate, Lidcombe, may soon
be able to dodge the high price of supermarket
produce by growing their own fruit and veg as
part of a community garden.
For resident of 11 years Paddy Hore, there’s
no better place to live than in Botanica Estate.
“This is our second house in Botanica… after
looking all over Sydney we ended up buying
a house 100 metres from where we already
lived. We really like living here, it’s a great part
of the world,” he said.
Passionate about the area, Mr Hore believes
there’s only one thing that could make Botanica
even better: the creation of a community
garden.
Mr Hore said the gardens seem like a “very
positive thing” and would be great for people
who don’t have big backyards or want to learn
how to grow vegetables.
“There’s some people in the estate who have
very small gardens… some people would
actually like to have access to a little more
space to be able to grow a few things,” he said.
“I’m keen to learn from other people how
you successfully grow herbs and veggies…
Dinh Van, Paddy Hore, Kevin Cheung and Paul La are pushing for the community garden. Photo: Melissa Stevens.
and I know for a fact we have a really diverse
community here, there’s lots of different
cultures, so I’m interested to see how people
from different backgrounds grow different
things.”
The possibility of a new shared garden
within the Botanica Estate in Lidcombe was
recently discussed at a Cumberland City
Council meeting.
Councillor Kun Huang, who put forward
the notice of motion, said members of the
community have asked the Council about the
possibility of having a community garden in
the Botanica Estate.
“This is another project that the Botanica
community has asked for, for quite a while,”
he said.
The endorsement for another community
garden to be created in the Cumberland
Council area comes after the opening of the
Wentworthville Community Garden last
month.
The Council report said that alongside
allowing residents to grow their own fruit
and vegetables, community gardens provide
a range of other social and environmental
benefits. It also notes that the creation of a
community garden can help residents to
become less reliant on purchasing fruit and
vegetables from stores.
Cumberland Council will now conduct a
report outlining the establishment of the
community garden.
“Not just footy and sh*t”: Men
invited to take a seat at the Table
EMILY FESZCZUK
A
community organisation is inviting
blokes to pull up a seat to create
meaningful conversations and relationships,
overcoming the stigma that “men
don’t talk”.
The Men’s Table initiative has recently made
its way to Parramatta and is looking for more
males to take part.
Member Eric Balinghasay, who is a part of
the central office known as The Kitchen and
is helping activate the local Table, said the
concept is simple.
“A group of up to 12 men meet at the same
time every month, at the same place and have
dinner together to share about their lives,
whether it is celebrating the highs, to share a
laugh or to talk about the lows and challenges
they are facing,” Mr Balinghasay said.
“There are fundamentals or guidelines
to help the discussion such as things being
confidential to make sure there is a level of
openness, and no toxic masculinity behaviour.”
Started in 2011 by David Pointon and Ben
Hughes, the registered charity now has
around 1000 members and close to 80 Tables
around the country.
While you don’t need to be going through
any challenges to join, the group provides
Camaraderie is a main focus for The Men’s Table initiative.
support for local men that can be often overlooked.
“We know that men have a greater challenge
in terms of not only having open conversations
but actually reaching out and starting
new friendships at any age,” he said.
“Out of every 10 suicides, seven of those are
men so there is clearly a need for more support
and our tagline is we don’t just talk about
“footy and sh*t” because men often connect
by sports and drinking but don’t have deeper
conversations that they would like to have.”
Each Table is free to join, and men only pay
for their own meal.
The Men’s Table welcomes males from
different backgrounds and walks of life, and
all ages.
“Our youngest member is about 21-years-old
and our oldest is about 92 but the majority fall
around the 40 to 60 age group,” Mr Balinghasay
said.
“We are very inclusive and have men who
are married that live with their families, as
well as single men, those in relationships or
who live alone and LGBTQ men that attend
the events.”
Identifying a gap in western Sydney, Mr
Balinghasay said introductory dinners known
as an Entrée have recently been held to attract
potential members.
“We had an Entrée at the Granville Centre,
and from there four men formed the first
Parramatta Table, while four others have
joined Tables in locations nearer their residence,”
he said.
“The Parramatta Table is open to more men
to grow their number.”
The Venus/Uranus opposition suggests
a house move, family fiasco,
uninvited guests dropping in or some
other kind of domestic drama. And
some Aquarians could experience
disruptions at work. Whatever happens,
strive to get the balance right
between your public life and your private
responsibilities. Retrograde Mars
also pushes you to reinvent a close
relationship. But don’t get so carried
away that you throw the baby out with
the bathwater!
Many Fish are feeling rather restless.
Mars is retrograde until January 12,
so it’s time to ditch distractions, conserve
energy and prioritise important
tasks. Then slow down and listen to
the wisdom of your inner voice. Your
motto for the week is from birthday
great, fashion icon and Vogue editor
Anna Wintour: “I respond to my own
instincts. Sometimes they’re successful
and sometimes they’re not. But
you have to remain true to what you
believe in.”
Resist the overwhelming urge to be
an impulsive and impetuous Ram!
Your boss planet Mars is now retrograde
(until January 12) so you need
to apply the brakes and think before
you speak and act and post. Otherwise,
you could upset others with
your hasty words and reckless actions.
When it comes to your Aries aspirations
for the future, the main quality
you need to cultivate at the moment is
patience, as you slow your motor and
cool your heels.
Mighty Mars is reversing through
your self-esteem zone until January
12, which could dent your confidence
and dampen your enthusiasm.
Don’t dwell on the negatives! Hold
your head high and trust your inner
judgement. Be inspired by actress and
birthday great, Sally Field (who was
born on November 6, 1946): “It took
me a long time not to judge myself
through someone else’s eyes.” On the
weekend, keep the lines of communication
and compassion wide open.
It’s time for gung-ho Geminis to hit
the pause button, as dynamic Mars
reverses through your sign until January
12. Which will stymie motivation
and increase impatience, especially
involving personal projects and close
relationships. Jumping to conclusions
is definitely not recommended! Hasty
words and ambiguous comments will
only lead to drama and confusion (especially
on Friday). So slow down and
listen carefully to what other people
are saying.
Mars is reversing through your seclusion
zone. So it’s time to help those
around you (especially family members)
in a quiet, low-key, behind-thescenes
kind of way. On the weekend,
Venus and Uranus could send some
surprising news in your direction, especially
involving a child, teenager,
lover or close friend. Wise words for
the week are from fellow Cancerian
(and humanitarian) Princess Diana,
“Everyone has the potential to give
something back.”
Many talented Lions have ambitious
aspirations for the future. But a
cherished goal or a longed-for dream
could be delayed, as Mars reverses
through your hopes and wishes zone
for the next two months (until January
12). Try to be extra patient! Good
things will eventually come to Cats
who wait. On the weekend, expect the
unexpected involving a work issue, a
family matter or a romantic relationship.
A flexible and fun approach will
see you through.
Mars is reversing through your professional
zone until January 12. So
it’s not an ideal time to look for employment,
apply for a new job or start
a challenging work project. You’ll
require plenty of diplomacy, discretion,
patience and persistence, as you
navigate a bumpy career path over the
next couple of months. And expect
some communication chaos on the
weekend when a friend behaves in an
unpredictable way, or an important
message goes astray.
Don’t expect close relationships to
deftly and diplomatically, then
things will soon be back on an even
or hidden surprises on the
weekend when Venus and Uranus upset
plans involving work or wellbeing.
A secret could also be revealed. If you
you’ll manage fine.
Expect some challenges and setbacks
over the next two months, as
Mars reverses through your daily routine
Keep on keeping on Capricorn! Your
writer and director Ethan Hawke (who
Are you still taking notes using pen
and paper? The game is changing!
MONEY MATTERS
WITH ALEX MCKENZIE
FUTURE FINANCIAL SERVICES • 4704 8585
Planning for the inevitable is a great
way to manage financial roller coaster
As a person with a technology bent,
I’m a bit old fashioned when it
comes to taking notes. I have never
managed to embrace to-do lists on phones
or computers. I still have a book where
I write daily lists and cross them off as
completed. Likewise, in meetings, I take
notes in the same book as it allows me to
scroll back through the pages for review.
While dedicated digital notepads are not
new, they have not been commonly available.
This is about to change with Amazon
announcing the Kindle Scribe.
The Kindle Scribe has a 10.2” display and
weighs 433g. It is approximately A4 in size.
Using it as a writing pad, the battery will last
about three weeks. As an eBook reader, it
will give you 12 weeks of battery life. It will
fully charge in a few hours. Two pen models
are available – Basic and Premium. The
difference is the addition of an eraser and a
shortcut button on the Premium pen. It has
built-in Wi-Fi allowing you to connect to
your local network and the Kindle store. The
idea behind a digital notepad will enable you
to read and write as naturally as you do on
paper.
The Scribe supports multiple formats,
including pdf, word, jpg, HTML, text, epub
and Mobi. Having compatibility with Microsoft
Word is a real advantage, as you can
create, edit, or mark up these documents.
Kindle Scribe is the only digital tablet
that currently supports Microsoft Word. It
includes templates including lined paper,
blank paper, checklists and to-do lists. Additionally,
you can open PDFs and highlight
or mark them up with additional comments
and notes.
An additional feature is that you can
connect a Bluetooth headset to the device
and, using Voiceview Screen technology,
can have the screen contents read to you.
The Kindle text-to-speech book reading is
also available.
As the Scribe integrates the Kindle eBook
reader and a writing tablet, this will save
me from carrying around multiple devices
and notepads. This is a game changer for me
as I now need only one device. The Kindle
Scribe is available on preorder from Amazon
and will be released at the end of November.
Pricing Starts at $549, including a pen. I
recommend getting the Premium pen for an
additional $50. I have already dropped a hint
to have this as a Christmas present.
There are times in our life when we
are spending far more than usual or
earning less than we normally do; it is
good practice to prepare for these moments
in advance.
We all know that life has many twists and
turns, ups and downs and is anything but
straight forward.
Some of these things are unforeseen;
however there are events for which we are
able to plan.
There are periods of our life where we know
in advance that our circumstances are going
to be different, whether that be seasonal
changes or lifetime events. By preparing for
these times in advance, we are likely to reduce
the financial stress.
Year to year, there are moments that cost us
more.
The Christmas period is probably the most
obvious time where our spending increases.
School holidays are another period where, for
many, there are additional costs; things such
as increased child care, increased activities
and, for some, reduced work hours.
Despite knowing that these periods are
coming, many try to absorb the extra expenses
into regular spending.
This often results in shortfalls, which creates
financial stress and can lead to the reliance on
credit cards and alike.
These periods can be planned for. If we allocate
funds throughout the year to be used in
these periods, we can remove the stress.
Essentially, we are averaging our yearly
expenses and planning accordingly.
The same can be done for periods in our life
where things are more difficult financially.
In my opinion, the most difficult time is
when we start a family.
During this period, most families have one
of the parents not at work or working in a
reduced capacity.
Once they return to work, many require
child care which is quite expensive, even with
the government assistance.
In the months leading up to this, if a family
is able to create a nest egg to get them through
this period, it will greatly reduce the financial
stress.
Private school is another example. We all
know that private school fees are very expensive,
for many this is considered a worthwhile
expense.
If you start saving for these fees well in
advance, then you can average these costs
over an 18 year period instead of a six year
period.
Putting away $100 per week from when your
child is born until they complete high school
is a lot easier than trying to find $15,000 per
year (or $300 a week) for the period they are at
high school.
Planning in advance can take the pressure
off for these known periods are a little tougher
than usual and avoid the potential pitfalls that
financial pressure creates.
Food for thought.
TRAVEL
A
few weeks ago I found myself in need
of some R&R at the end of a busy
week. Thankfully, a weekend away at
the Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel Sydney did just
the trick.
Upon walking into the gold-draped lobby
of the hotel, it became clear to myself and my
companion that this wasn’t just any boutiquestyle
accommodation.
Housed within a stunning heritage-listed
building, most recognisable by its peculiar
diminutive Flatiron shape, the Radisson Blu
Plaza Hotel Sydney was once home to Fairfax
& Sons – the publishers of Australia’s oldest
surviving newspaper, The Sydney Morning
Herald. Now, over 160 years after it was first
built, and following a revamp in 2016, it
successfully balances its historical roots with
elements of modern flair to provide guests
with the ultimate luxury stay.
“THE RADISSON BLU PLAZA
HOTEL SYDNEY IS THE
PERFECT LOCATION TO
SPOIL YOURSELF IN THE
HEART OF THE CITY”
The hotel has 338 guestrooms and 26 suites
across its six room categories. With each of
these fitted with modern amenities and chic
style, you’re not missing out with the standard
option. But, if you’re looking for something
a little bit extra, you can upgrade to a room
with an extra-deep jetted tub, or to one of
their Business Class rooms, which includes
exclusive access to the Business Class lounge.
After checking in, we made our way up to
find our own spacious room with all the bells
and whistles, including individual room
climate control, an iron and ironing board,
and bathrobes and slippers for the both of us.
The sophisticated marble bathroom includes
both a bath and shower, with a window
connecting the two rooms to allow you to
watch your favourite TV show surrounded by
bubbles. The hotel also provides a selection
of pillows and bedding for guests to choose
from, ensuring the utmost comfort during
your stay.
After dropping off our bags, we took to
exploring some of the hotel’s amenities,
which include a fitness centre, pool and
spa. The Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel Sydney
also has three restaurants; the Lady Fairfax
room, which ensures a start to the day second
to none with their Super Breakfast, the
award-winning Bentley Restaurant & Bar,
and The Fax Bar, which is the perfect setting
to unwind after a big day in the big city.
However, one of the highlights of our stay
was finding out just how close the hotel is to
almost every attraction in Sydney. On the
night of our stay, we went to the incredible
‘Moulin Rouge! The Musical’, which was
showing at the Capitol Theatre – just a short
20-minute walk away down the ever-lively Pitt
Street.
Upon our return to the hotel, the comfortable
king size bed meant that we were asleep
as soon as our heads hit the pillows – but not
before setting an alarm to ensure we could
make the most of a big day ahead.
Before we knew it, we were back at the Lady
Fairfax room to indulge in the buffet breakfast
of our dreams. Though all the classics were
present, filling our first plates with scrambled
eggs and hash browns, and fruit and yoghurt
respectively, the spread didn’t stop there. The
room was lined with tables boasting a selection
of upscale options like smoked salmon
and ham, and the sweet stuff, including
delicious pancakes and waffles.
With full stomachs and wide eyes, we then
left our luggage with the incredibly helpful
staff to again take advantage of the hotel’s
prime location, walking first to Darling
Harbour, then to eat our way through Manly
via Circular Quay.
With all that and more right on your doorstep,
there’s no doubt that the Radisson Blu
Plaza Hotel Sydney is the perfect location to
spoil yourself in the heart of the city.
MOVIES, TELEVISION, MUSIC AND MORE – PARRAMATTA’S LEADING ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
CAMPBELL
BRINGS THE
CLASSICS
CASSIDY PEARCE
David Campbell has been singing
ever since he was a young boy.
But, with his extensive work in
television and radio, even he
admits that it’s not necessarily
what he’s best known for anymore.
“It’s weird, because I’ve been on TV for
such a long time now, which has been such
a wonderful blessing, but at the same time,
when I do sing, there’s a generation of people
that are like, ‘Oh you’re a singer?’, and
I’m like, ‘Yeah! That was my whole life for
20-something years!” he said.
Since the beginning of the year, David wasted
no time getting back on stage, performing
in shows with his Dad, Jimmy Barnes.
But, it’s now his turn to take centre stage, in
a one night only show at the EVAN Theatre
in Penrith.
The show highlights his iconic 2008 album,
‘Good Lovin’’, with a set he hasn’t performed
in over 10 years.
“It’s my first time really starting to revise
old things, and older albums and projects
that I’ve looked at,” he said.
“I had to fill in for The Tesky Brothers on
my Dad’s tour in Adelaide for his ‘Soul Deep’
tour, so I thought I’d do something that was
in keeping with the spirit of ‘Soul Deep’.
“When I was touring ‘Good Lovin’’, I also
toured around that time with Tom Jones. I
was his opening act at the wineries around
the country, and we had to do this tight set,
so I dusted that set off and went, ‘It was good
fun doing this album’, so when Panthers
approached me and was like, ‘Hey, do you
wanna do something at the EVAN Theatre?’, I
was like, ‘Yeah actually, I do! I’d like to come
back and relive the moment that this album
came out’.”
David said he can’t wait to return to Penrith
and connect with western Sydney audiences
again.
“It’s the perfect spot to do it, because we
came back quite a few times on that tour to
that area, so it’s going to be great to revisit,”
he said.
For David, the album represents a time in
music where sixties swing music converges
with rock to create a varied mix of sounds,
requiring a “really great singer”.
It’s for this reason that he’s bringing along
his sister Mahalia, for yet another family affair
for the bunch.
“We do love performing together, and we
don’t get to do it that often,” he said.
“My Dad’s just done a huge tour, he’s got all
these big events coming up, Mahalia’s doing
gigs around the country, Jackie plays with
my Dad, and my sisters do their own shows
as well, so when we can come together and
sing, we like to do it.
“There’s something about singing with
your family that gets you on a cellular level,
and just feels better.”
As for who’s going to love the show, David
said it’s not just for those who have been
there all along.
“It doesn’t matter when you discovered
me, if you’re having a good time and you
want to try it out, it’s a good night to try it out
with,” he said.
“It’s going to be a fun, big show with a lot
of sing-a-longs for the audience hopefully.”
David Campbell will be on at the EVAN
Theatre in Penrith on Saturday, November
5 at 8pm. Tickets are $64.35. For more
information or to book, visit penrith.panthers.com.au.
At the movies...
REVIEW
Black Adam

2 hours, 5 minutes
Though Dwayne Johnson’s ongoing promotion
of ‘Black Adam’ meant that I was a
little bit over it even before I entered the cinema,
the newest DCEU film surpassed my
expectations, albeit being a bit surface level.
‘Black Adam’ recounts the story of ancient
Kahndaq, a distinctively Middle Eastern
country ruled by King Anh-Kot, where Teth
Adam (Dwayne Johnson) was bestowed the
almighty powers of the gods. 5000 years later,
he’s awoken from his slumber to find the
region riddled with soldiers and still not in
the hands of the people, convincing himself
and viewers that they need someone on
their side.
We then see the introduction of a number
of heroes; Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan),
Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Atom Smasher
(Noah Centineo), and Cyclone (Quintessa
Swindell). Unless you’re a fan of the comics,
these characters would be completely new
to you – as they were to me. The lack of background
does make the film a little trickier to
follow, given that it leaves viewers with no
reason to back them against Black Adam, or
care what happens to them otherwise.
The film, with clear political overtones,
sees the weight of its ideas around colonialism
floated and dismissed just as quickly, in
favour of yet another brawl – deeming it all
spectacle, and no substance.
Though it was strange seeing Dwayne Johnson
in a role that didn’t require khakis, he
played the antihero well, and the mid-credit
scene provides interest for future films.
A Marvel sympathiser at my core, I must
say I set the bar pretty low for this movie. It’s
no classic, but ‘Black Adam’ was a fun, easy
watch, for fans of a good fight scene.
Str8ts
How to beat Str8ts -
Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat
in any row or column. But... rows and
columns are divided by black squares into
compartments. These need to be filled
in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’.
A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order,
e.g. [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in
that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the
solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.
You can find more help and strategies at www.str8ts.com
along with more puzzles, Apple apps and books.
Wheel Words
Create words of four letters or more using the given
letters once only, but always including the middle letter.
Do not use proper names or plurals ending with S. See
if you can find the nine letter word using up all letters
SPORT
Sport needs intervention
Cumberland Council agrees to support development of synthetic sporting field
ELLIE BUSBY
Frustrated Cumberland locals have
pushed for greater support for playing
grounds, after wet weather caused
constant disruptions across local sporting
competitions.
For Lidcombe local and mother of two
teenage “football-mad” boys Melanie Rennie,
seeing the impact the weather has had on
local sports grounds this year has been heartbreaking.
“This year has been one of the most challenging
years that I’ve seen for disruption to
both my boys and our entire football family in
this community,” she said.
“Starting with the delays that have carried
on from COVID [to] being constantly
disrupted due to that horrible La Nina and our
parks being unable to hold up to the weather
and dry out.”
Ms Rennie said she has heard the frustrations
of numerous players, parents and
volunteers at not being able to play on fields
that have been deemed “unplayable” by
Cumberland City Council.
Having been involved in the Lidcombe
Waratah football family since 2011, Ms Rennie
spoke of the important role local sports play in
maintaining the physical and mental health
of young people in the community.
“It’s really essential to these boys, both for
Cr Ola Hamed with local sports representatives at Melita Stadium. Photo: Melissa Stevens.
their mental health and obviously their physical
fitness, that the stability and the resilience
of our grounds must be improved as a point of
urgency for this community,” she said.
For African Australian Football Association
(AAFA) Secretary Mohammad Omar, playing
sport is not only great for health but provides a
“sense of belonging”.
“We’ve got a lot of young people who do want
to play and love the ‘World Game’… many of
these refugees that have come from war-torn
countries as migrants to this country, the only
thing they know is football,” he said.
“Every park that you go into in the Cumberland
area, kids are kicking the football
around… so this is a very important thing for
our young people.”
Cumberland City Councillor Ola Hamed
addressed the impact the severe weather
conditions has had on sporting grounds,
agreeing that the fields are in “desperate
need” of serious remediation.
Moving a Notice of Motion at a recent Council
meeting, Cr Hamed said that sports and
recreation are an “important part of the fabric
of community.”
“[Sport] contributes to community character
and gives us local heroes who inspire and
unify us,” she said.
“That is precisely what Cumberland sports
clubs aim to do and they are only able to
facilitate this through having access to quality
sporting fields.”
Cumberland Council unanimously agreed
in principle to support the development of
at least one synthetic sporting field and will
undertake consultation to determine where
it can be developed. Council will also be
provided with a report outlining a plan to
increase the capacity and resilience of Council
sporting fields.
