FROM THE
EDITOR
Starkville was an absolute blast for the Bulldog Nation and Kirby’s
Dawgs came away with another solid victory … now let’s open the
paddock on Saturday and get another W in the Blue Grass state!
VANCE LEAVY
EDITOR IN CHIEF
Having just arrived home
from the terrific Mississippi
State roadie, I first want to
extend a huge thanks to the town of
Starkville and the awesome MSU fans. Everyone there was so
welcoming and appreciative to all the Georgia fans that made
the trip. From fantastic golf at the Old Waverly Golf Course to
scrumptious dinners at 44 Prime and Anthony’s, the hospitality
in StarkVegas was top-notch. And while the cowbells at the
game are always annoying, you have to appreciate the Maroon
fans that banged them throughout the night game.
Long story short, the next time the Dogs play in Starkville do
yourself a favor and make a three day weekend out of it. Great
time, great hospitality, great environment … Hail to State!
Of course, the outcome on the field for our Bulldogs certainly
made the trip even better … Dawgs 45 Maroons 19.
A tip of the hat also goes to Mike Leach’s Dawgs, who
competed valiantly for the entire game. In my opinion,
the game was much closer than the final score indicates.
Nonetheless, our Dawgs do what they do and leaned on
MSU the entire game, which in the end netted the lopsided
conclusion.
With the victory, our Dawgs remain the top team in the
country and stretch their record to a perfect 10-0. Except as
Coach Smart and I’m sure every member on the team would
admit these 2022 Dawgs aren’t without some faults. The
turnovers on offense and some special teams’ shortcomings
(see Kevin Butler’s Players of the Game on page 37) are
completely fixable, which is why having two more regular
season games is so important.
One thing that nobody can question with this year’s Dawgs
is their togetherness when they take the field. This is why this
issue’s cover shot (by Rob Saye) is perfect for Saturday’s game
in Lexington. Look at those serious faces coming out of the
tunnel or paddock (since this game takes place deep in the
horse country of the Bluegrass state).
I definitely encourage you not to miss Greg Poole’s From the
Field (page 34). As Greg points out (using a quote from Coach
Smart’s post game presser), I have no doubt these Dawgs and
their still evolving DNA will be ready to play a Wildcat team
that is surely smarting after the embarrassing loss to Vandy
this past weekend.
I can’t wait for the paddock to open on Saturday for our
Dawgs final road game of the 2022 regular season. This issue
of BI should tide you over until toe meets leather in Lexington.
As I opened with, the trip to Starkville was a blast and our fan
photos (page 26-30) certainly display our fans doing what they
love most there. It wasn’t a Georgia takeover, but the Red and
Black definitely was well represented.
Also in our social section, don’t miss our Georgia Girls feature
(pages 24 and 25) with Athenian Katie Foley Jacobs. Katie is a
former Equestrian Dawg turned fashionista entrepreneur. And
now I know why Katie and my bride (Cheri) are kindred spirits
… they are both voracious readers, admire Dolly Parton and
have double-digit subscriptions to fashion magazines. Love it.
Then be sure to pop over to our Proust Q&A (page 31) with
Golden Islander Trey Brunson. Like Katie, Trey spends some of
his down time reading. Also, I grew up with Trey and the entire
Brunson family, so I can attest to his love of the Dawgs and
the game of football. And while he is older than Kirby, I know
it makes him proud to see his SAE fraternity brother having so
much success leading the Georgia football program.
Finally, I leave you with a couple of bonus action shots from
the Mississippi State game. In our last issue, I failed to talk
about the incredible tackling displayed against the Vols in
the Tennessee game. And for that matter, the crisp tackling
all season long has been a thing of beauty. Just ask the
Mississippi State player (in the photo) whose number can’t be
seen because of the way he is so covered up by Dawgs. And
thumbs up to Kendall Milton for his TD scamper that put the
final nail in the coffin in Starkville. Nice job No. 2.
Alright Bulldog Nation … let’s open the paddock in Lexington
on Saturday and help our Road Dawgs come home with
another win. See you there … Go Dawgs!
Smart and Stoops are similar in their dedication to playing
a physical brand of football, which equates to another stellar
battle between the Cats and Dawgs on Saturday in Lexington
JEFF DANTZLER
@jeffdantzlerTV
When Georgia and
Kentucky square off
Saturday afternoon on
a cold Fall Saturday, it
will be a matchup of two of the most
physical teams in college football.
Head coaches Kirby Smart and Mark
Stoops pride themselves on physicality
at every level offensively, defensively
and on special teams. Especially on the
line of scrimmage.
Stoops first. With a famous first
name, the brother of longtime highly
successful Oklahoma legend Bob Stoops,
has built Kentucky into one of the most
stable programs in the Southeastern
Conference. Operating in the shadow
of regal Kentucky basketball, ripe with
those eight national championships,
the Wildcats football program has
often been an afterthought. Both in the
Southeastern Conference and within the
Kentucky fan base.
But not under Stoops’ watch.
Yes, John Calipari and Big Blue are still
king of the mountain. Stoops though
has built a consistent winner. The steady
growth and consistent success has made
a mark in, yes, both the SEC and with the
Wildcat faithful.
It started in 2013 with a record of 2-10.
The next two years, the Wildcats went
5-7. Now that wouldn’t have cut it in
Athens, Tuscaloosa or Baton Rouge or at
Rupp Arena. But Kentucky was patient,
and it has paid off. The SEC East’s longest
tenured coach has led Kentucky to a
bowl for six straight years, and this
season will be the seventh postseason
trip in a row for the Wildcats. The only
losing season over that stretch came in
the Covid 2020 campaign. The highlights
have been a pair of 10-3 records in
both 2018 and 2021. In the Stoops
era, Kentucky has notched signature
wins over Tennessee, Penn State and
Iowa, while turning the tables against
Florida. From 1987-2017, the Gators
beat Kentucky an astonishing 31 times
in a row. Some of those games, it was
just incredible how they got away from
Kentucky. But since 2018, Stoops has led
Kentucky to three wins in the previous
five meetings with Florida, including the
last two in a row.
Now, if Kentucky can beat Georgia and
in-state rival Louisville, the Wildcats
would be bowling with a shot at another
9-4.
That would also end another streak.
Back in 2016, favorite Georgia son
Kirby Smart recorded one of his first
signature victories as the head coach at
his alma mater. A last second Rodrigo
Blankenship field goal delivered a 27-24
win in Lexington. That was a building
block win for a program on the fast track
under Smart’s watch.
Since 2017, the second year of the
Smart era, Georgia has been one
of the most dominant programs in
college football. The Bulldogs won
the SEC championship and played
for the national title that year. Last
season, Georgia won the National
Championship. This year, the Bulldogs
are heading to their fifth trip to the SEC
Championship Game with a regular
season record of 11-1 (2017, 2018, 2019)
or better (2021).
Thinking back to some hard times
daddy - cue The American Dream Dusty
Rhodes - there was a stretch mainly
covering the 1990s when Georgia lost
nine straight times to Tennessee and
went 1-11 against Florida teams coached
by Steve Spurrier. For this spirited 50-
year old scribe, from 1983-1990, the
Bulldogs lost seven times in eight games
against Auburn.
Well, Georgia has won five of the
last six against the Gators, who are
on their third head coach during that
stretch. The Bulldogs have won six
straight against Tennessee, which
is on its third head coach over that
period. And, dating back to the 2017
SEC Championship Game, Georgia has
beaten Auburn, now on its third head
coach of the Smart era, six times in
a row. That’s strong stuff against the
Bulldogs biggest SEC rivals.
For the record, Georgia is also 4-0
against the Yellow Jackets - outscoring
“The Enemy” 180-35 - since 2017. There
was no game between the in-state foes
in 2020. The North Avenue Trade School
is also on its third head coach of the
Smart era.
Georgia has also won 12 straight
against Kentucky, running the decade
of the 2010s under Mark Richt and
Smart.
While there has been such turnover
amongst the Bulldogs old and ancient
foes, Kentucky has been a constant
since Stoops got his program going in
Lexington.
He and Kentucky certainly look at
beating Georgia before what promises
to be an electric atmosphere at
Commonwealth Stadium / Kroger Field.
Back in 1988, Kentucky upset Georgia
in Lexington, derailing SEC title dreams
in Vince Dooley’s final season as the
Bulldogs head coach. I’d gladly trade
one of the wins in a mediocre season
during this current 12-game winning
streak for that one in ‘88. It’s one of the
most painful losses in Georgia history.
The legendary Dooley told me once that
one stood out perhaps more than any,
because he would have loved to “go out
… as a champion.”
So here are the Wildcats trying to play
spoiler and derail the Dogs dreams
of a second consecutive national
championship.
While Kentucky dropped a bad one in a
nooner against Vanderbilt, the Bulldogs,
after back-to-back victories over the
Gators and Volunteers, were in Starkville
and now visit Lexington. Directly in the
crosshairs.
What a test this will be for the Bulldogs.
Smart has implored his team all year
to be the “hunter,” vowing that the
reigning national champions would not
be hunted.
And in what promises to be one of the
most physical games of the year, the
Bulldogs must pack their best punch and
strongest chin.
GEORGIA VS KENTUCKY
BY: JEFF DANTZLER
Top-ranked Georgia battles Kentucky Saturday afternoon in
Lexington at Commonwealth Stadium/Kroger Field, and the
forecast is calling for cold temperatures.
The reigning national champion Bulldogs head in with a record
of 10-0, and 7-0 in league play, clinching the Southeastern
Conference East Division crown for the fifth time in the last six
seasons with a 45-19 victory over Mississippi State this past
weekend in Starkville. Georgia has won 28 of the past 29 games
dating back to the final four games of the 2020 campaign. For
the first time in program history, the Bulldogs are off to a 10-0 in
back to back years.
Kentucky heads into the game with a record of 6-4, 3-4 in
Southeastern Conference play. The Wildcats were stunned by
Vanderbilt 24-21 this past Saturday, as the Commodores broke a
26-game SEC losing streak. Kentucky, which has signature wins
over both Florida and Mississippi State this season, will aim for
the major upset of the Bulldogs, as they try to bounce back from
the tough loss to Vandy.
Georgia has won 12 straight in the series, defeating Kentucky
every year since 2010. The Wildcats last win over the Bulldogs
came in Athens in 2009. The last time Kentucky beat Georgia in
Lexington was 2006.
The Wildcats would like to pull out some of that upset mojo.
The Bulldogs most heartbreaking loss to Kentucky ever came
in 1988, as Kentucky cost Georgia a share of the SEC title in the
final season of legendary hall of fame coach Vince Dooley. When
it comes to beating title contenders, the Wildcats upended
eventual national champion LSU in 2007.
For the Bulldogs to avoid the upset, to “remain the hunter,”
under head coach Kirby Smart’s watch, Georgia must clean up
a turnover problem. Over the last three games, a 42-20 win
over Florida, 27-13 topping of Tennessee, and the 26-point
triumph over Mississippi State, the Bulldogs have a cumulative
seven turnovers, while coming up with two. Both against the
Volunteers.
That’s something Georgia must clean up if these Bulldogs
are to arrive at the ultimate destination. These Bulldogs have
clinched the berth for the SEC title tilt in Atlanta. Then it’s the
Yellow Jackets for the state championship. But Smart and the
veteran leadership on this team is preaching no lookahead.
There are bigger proverbial fish to fry. A slip-up would mar
Georgia’s drive for the national championship. It’s certainly
been clear that these Bulldogs of 2022 are out to make their
own history.
BULLDOGS TO WATCH
BY: COBY SERINA
MARCUS ROSEMY-JACKSAINT (WR #1) - This man is on a tear.
In what has become his breakout season, Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint has so
far caught 21 receptions for 241 receiving yards and a touchdown and is
becoming a reliable starting option in the process. In the absence of A.D.
Mitchell, you can see that the Dawgs have slotted MRJ right in, and while the
two present their own unique skill sets, he’s proving himself to be worthy of
the playing time he’s earned. He may just reel in a big one against Kentucky
as the Wildcats have one of the better rush defenses in the SEC.
MARCUS ROSEMY-JACKSAINT
WIDE RECEIVER
DARNELL WASHINGTON (TE #0) - The “juggernaut” of a tight end
just caught his first touchdown of the season against the Mississippi State
Bulldogs, and it feels like he’s just getting started scoring wise at the back
end of the regular season. In the past three games Darnell Washington has
been getting about four targets a game. That’s a lot of opportunities given
he averages 16.3 yards a reception. So far this season, he’s the team’s third
most productive receiver and that should only continue against a lackluster
Kentucky team.
DEVIN WILLOCK (OL #77) - Georgia is already having another
special season, but something special in particular that they do right
now is consistently rotate their offensive lineman to keep legs fresh and
energy high. Devin Willock has been one of the beneficiaries of this style.
A third-year 6-7, 330-pound interior lineman who had his first start against
Tennessee will (like he has all season) will get good playing time against
Kentucky. Look out for him wearing 77 in the trenches. He’ll manhandle
defenders in the running game.
DEVIN WILLOCK
OFFENSIVE LINEMAN
MALAKI STARKS (DB #24) - As a true freshman Malaki Starks is
already racking up statistics like he’s a veteran. Deployed at the safety and
sometimes slot position, Starks has already amassed 48 total tackles (leads
the team), six pass deflections and two interceptions. Long story short, Starks
is not afraid to get physical, and that’s just the type of play the Dawgs will
need as they tee off against a run-heavy Kentucky.
SMAEL MONDON JR. (LB #2) - Because of Kentucky’s smashmouth
offense, linebacker Smael Mondon should wind up having a day. Against
a run-heavy Florida team, Mondon put up a career high seven tackles. Last
week against Mississippi State’s air raid offense, he surpassed that number
putting up eight total tackles. Mondon is a sturdy backer who can display
some crazy sideline-to-sideline speed when needed.
SMAEL MONDON JR.
LINEBACKER
ZION LOGUE (DL #96) - You don’t hear his name called enough, but
it’s only because senior Zion Logue is doing all the dirty work in the trenches.
Sitting at a pretty 300 pounds, Logue is disruptive at the nose guard position.
With his size and reach, he’s constantly eating up running lanes and blowing
up plays before they happen. If something good happens defensively, you
can probably trace it back to Logue just doing his job.
BY JEFF DANTZLER
Georgia clinched the 2018 SEC East title with
a 34-17 victory at Kentucky, as D’Andre Swift
had a spectacular game with 156 yards and two
memorable touchdowns on 16 carries.
On the final weekend of the 2001 regular season,
the Georgia baseball team won two of three
games at Kentucky to clinch the Bulldogs first
Southeastern Conference title since 1954.
One of the greatest players in Georgia basketball
history, All-American guard Vern Fleming was an
Olympic Gold Medalist in 1984 and played 12 NBA
seasons, primarily with the Pacers.
WILDCATS TO WATCH
BY: CLAY WATKINS
MARK STOOPS (HC) - Despite a difficult 2022 campaign, Stoops
has led Kentucky to new heights to which they have not been
accustomed. The former defensive architect for the Florida State
Seminoles is coming off a 2021 campaign where he led the Wildcats
to 10 wins which included a Citrus Bowl victory over Iowa. Stoops
is known for fielding extremely physical teams that are difficult to
play against no matter their record. Despite coming off an extremely
disappointing loss against the Vanderbilt Commodores, Stoops will
have his Wildcats fired up to play the visiting National Champions.
WILL LEVIS
QUARTERBACK
WILL LEVIS (QB #7) - The Wildcat quarterback is midway through
a rather disappointing 2022 campaign. Levis came into the season with
tremendous hype and Heisman expectations. Levis is still predicted to
be a first-round pick despite serious struggles this season. The Kentucky
quarterback is coming off a game against Vanderbilt where he threw
for just 109 yards, no touchdowns, and one interception. Despite his
struggles, Levis possesses a massive frame with a rocket arm. The
Bulldogs seem to be coming into town at the right time, but they
certainly will be aware of Levis’ athletic abilities.
CHRIS RODRIGUEZ JR. (RB #24) - Rodriguez was one of the
few bright spots in Kentucky’s loss against Vanderbilt. The senior from
McDonough, Georgia rushed for 162 yards and two touchdowns.
Rodriguez was suspended toward the beginning of the season, but
since his return, the running back has made Kentucky a much more
threatening team offensively. Georgia, so far this season, has been
impressive against the run, but Rodriguez is a bell-cow type back that
will need to be limited in order for the Bulldogs’ defense to excel.
CHRIS RODRIGUEZ JR.
RUNNING BACK
DANE KEY (WR #6) - Dane Key is a 6-3, 194-pound receiver from
Lexington, Kentucky. The freshman has been a hometown hero for the
Wildcats racking up five receiving touchdowns this season. Key has just
over 400 yards receiving through the 2022 season and is a fantastic
catcher of contested passes. The Wildcats will need to rely on their
playmakers if they want to have any shot of knocking off the Bulldogs,
and Key, despite his age, is more than capable of creating problems
with his speed and pass-catching ability.
DEANDRE SQUARE (LB #5) - Square is a senior linebacker
from Detroit, Michigan. The Wildcat has tallied 55 tackles this season,
leading Kentucky’s entire team despite being injured for a large part of
the season. The linebacker is expected to return against Georgia and
Kentucky will certainly need him against a dynamic Georgia offense.
Square does a terrific job in pass coverage and he will need to against
Georgia’s NFL-ready tight ends. If Square is fully healthy against the
Dawgs, he will likely lead the Wildcat’s defense in tackles.
JORDAN LOVETT
DEFENSIVE BACK
JORDAN LOVETT (DB #25) - Lovett was the fourth-leading
tackler against Vanderbilt this past weekend. The defensive back
from Radcliff, Kentucky has been a massive presence on the Kentucky
defense. Lovett is 6-2, 202-pound and is already one of Kentucky’s best
tacklers. The talented freshman is coming into the Georgia game with
27 total tackles on the season and will be a player that Todd Monken
will need to scheme around.
JALEN CARTER EQUALS
PHYSICAL!
BY JEFF DANTZLER
FIVE KEYS
FOR A DAWGS VICTORY
1
BE MORE PHYSICAL - In Kirby Smart’s uber successful career at the Georgia helm, the
Bulldogs have been one of the most physical teams in all of college football. Mark Stoops
has Kentucky in that same boat, a tough, hard-nosed physical football team. So who can
be the “bigger bully,” especially in the trenches. Kentucky is big up front - newsflash, they’re in
the Southeastern Conference. They love to deploy a physical running attack, most notably in
an impressive home victory over Mississippi State, and Will Levis is a big strong quarterback
who can run and is hard to get down. Most games are won at the line of scrimmage. For
Georgia to prevail, the Dogs must win at the point of attack.
HOUND LEVIS - One of the most talented quarterbacks in college football, the 6-3,
232-pound senior has all the tools. He can make all the throws, and is an athletic, effective,
2strong runner. He turned a couple of fumbles/bobles into first downs and positive plays for
Kentucky a year ago in Georgia’s 30-13 victory over the Wildcats in Athens. The Bulldogs are in a
stretch of facing outstanding signal callers. Making Levis uncomfortable, even if the Dogs don’t get
him down a lot is essential for a Georgia victory.
3
CORRAL RODRIGUEZ - Kirby Smart calls Chris Rodriguez a “thumper.” One of the most
successful running backs in Wildcats history, Rodriguez checks off all the boxes. The 5-11,
224-pound senior from McDonough, Georgia (Ola HS) packs a load. Rodriguez is a hard
physical runner and a perfect pairing with Levis in the Wildcats talented backfield. He has a nose for
the goalline, a touchdown maker when Kentucky is knocking on the door. Absorbing the hit from
Rodriguez is not a recipe for success against the Wildcats. Easier said than done. Those fleet Georgia
‘backers will have to be at their best.
MAKE PLAYS ON PERIMETER - Elite players like Sony Michel, D’Andre Swift,
MeCole Hardman, and Brock Bowers have shined against Kentucky in the Smart era. It’s
4hard, tough and physical inside with these two SEC brutes. Every inch is a battle. Getting
those “chunk” / explosive plays at receiver, in the return game or anywhere in the open field can
be difference-making in any game, but especially this one. Bowers was at his best a year ago
with a spectacular two touchdown performance. It’s a good bet that Big Blue will be scheming
to the 10th degree in an attempt to slow the All-American do-everything tight end down.
5
WIN THE KICKING GAME - The Bulldogs beat Kentucky 30-13 last season. One of
the big plays was a blocked field goal by Jordan Davis and Devonte Wyatt. Back in 2018,
Hardman broke a long punt return to set up Georgia’s first touchdown in a 34-17 win
over the Wildcats in Lexington. Can Georgia come up with another big play like that? It’s going
to be cold and likely windy, so the kicking game could have an even bigger impact. Field
position, who’s got the wind in the fourth quarter, and who can handle the elements? Special
Teams and turnovers, we all know they can be the great equalizer, especially when combined.
If Georgia can win the kicking game, the Dogs have a good shot at denying the talented
Wildcats upset bid.
DAWG BONES OFFENSE: GEORGIA
Georgia has the second most productive offense in the SEC, while
Kentucky has the least. There’s a 1,600 yard disparity between Georgia
and Kentucky’s total production which leans Georgia’s way. And some
may bring up the “Will Levis is a first-round pick” gist, but the fact of the
matter is no one he’s throwing or handing the ball off to will go that
high. Levis is a sharp tool in a dusty shed while the Georgia offense in
comparison is simply put: a well-oiled machine.
DAWG BONES DEFENSE: GEORGIA
In the SEC, both Georgia and Kentucky boast the best and third best
defenses respectively, but the thing that sets Georgia apart is their run
defense. The Dawgs have allowed 825 rushing yards on the season to the
Wildcat’s 1,350, and overall you can say Georgia has the more talented
roster. Kirby Smart and his crew take the cake here especially after
Kentucky’s wild loss to Vanderbilt last week.
DAWG BONES SPECIAL TEAMS: GEORGIA
Kentucky’s kick return game is a bit better than Georgia’s, but Georgia’s
punt returning is better than Kentucky’s unit. So they’re about even in
the returning category, but the Dawgs pull away with Podlesny at boot.
His season field goal percentage is 89.5% to the Kentucky kicker, Matt
Ruffalo’s 63.2%. Both have taken 19 attempts.
DAWG BONES COACHING: GEORGIA
Proof is in the pudding. One of these coaching staffs is leading the
College Football Playoff committee ranked No. 1 team in the nation to
an SEC Championship where they’ll likely be favored, and one of them
isn’t. You can also assess how these staff are instilling discipline within
their teams by looking at the amount of penalties they’ve drawn thus far.
As of week 9, the Dawgs have had 17 less penalties than the Cats, and
nothing much should change in Lexington.
DAWG BONES OVERALL: GEORGIA
The College Football Playoff committee thinks this is the No. 1 team
in the nation. The Associated Press poll thinks this is the No. 1 team in
the nation. You probably think this is the No. 1 team in the nation. And
truth is that the Georgia Bulldogs are undoubtedly the No. 1 team in the
nation. Not only has Kirby Smart recruited the most, if not one of the
most, talented rosters in the nation, he’s created an unbeatable culture
amongst that group in the process. Yes, this will be a home game for the
Kentucky Wildcats, but should be nothing more than a business trip for
the Georgia Bulldogs.
A VIEW FROM ...
TALK ABOUT THE WILL
LEVIS / CHRIS RODRIGUEZ
BACKFIELD COMBO.
Chris Rodriguez is built differently
as a running back. Rodriguez is a
straight-ahead, downhill runner.
He loves contact and won’t shy
away from it. He is a bruiser. Will
Levis has drawn praise from NFL
scouts and has studied under two
NFL minds in Liam Coen and, now,
Rich Scangarello. Kentucky can be
balanced in their pro-style system
with this combo threat.
HOW ABOUT THE
OUTSTANDING JOB MARK
STOOPS HAS DONE FOR
KENTUCKY, HIGHLIGHTED
BY THOSE TWO 10-WIN
SEASONS?
Mark Stoops has done a fantastic
job changing the culture in
Lexington and he has done it
the hard way. His teams are
always physical, fundamentally
sound and he and his staff do a
tremendous job developing guys.
The momentum in recruiting
reflects the trajectory of the
program he has built.
WHAT DOES KENTUCKY
NEED TO DO TO BEAT
GEORGIA?
The biggest key for Kentucky will
be keeping Will Levis upright,
taking advantage of the home
crowd. The Cats need to cash in on
opportunities and limit Georgia’s.
Kentucky has to match Georgia’s
physicality from whistle to whistle.
If the Cats can establish C-Rod
early, look for that to open up playaction
opportunities downfield.
WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON
THE BULLDOGS?
Man, are they impressive! Talent
across the board. Brock Bowers
is a monster. Offense setting a
record pace at over 500 yards a
game. Defensively, to face two
of the top offenses in the nation,
and hold them to a combined 16
points, is incredible. Georgia looks
like a team built to win it all.
THE SEC IS ALWAYS
STRONG, AND IT SEEMS
ESPECIALLY DEEP AND
TOUGH THIS SEASON,
WHAT IS YOUR VIEW OF
THE LEAGUE IN 2022?
If you’re a fan of college football,
how could you argue the
entertainment value of the
SEC this season? We have been
treated to marquee games week
after week. The depth of this
conference is impressive. A lot
of that you can contribute to the
quality of head coaches in this
league. There are no weeks off in
the SEC!
ALWAYS HAVE TO ASK,
HOW WILL THE ‘CATS BE
ON THE HARDWOOD THIS
SEASON?
Coach Calipari has assembled
another talented roster. Perhaps the
biggest recruit for Kentucky is the
return of the National Player of the
Year, Oscar Tschiebwe. Cason Wallace
is a name to know. He is a consensus
five-star prospect and has already
shown his ability on both ends of
the floor. The Cats have veteran
experience to go with the young
prospects. I expect Kentucky to vie
for another conference crown and
deep run in the postseason.
DO YOU HAVE A SCORE
PREDICTION FOR THE GAME?
If Kentucky can establish
Rodriguez on the ground and
protect Levis, they’ll keep this
game low-scoring. Give the edge
to Georgia, 28-10.
NO HORSING
FOOTBALL
FROM THE FIELD
BY GREG POOLE
GEORGIA - 45, MISSISSIPPI STATE - 19
Coach Smart tried to warn us all week, and Kirby alluded
to Starkville and Coach Leach’s team earlier in the week
when he said:
“It’s an extremely tough place to play. A place I’ve been
many times. Their environment is electric. It’ll be at night.
And their guys play really hard and they’re really physical.”
He was right. Davis Wade Stadium is a very tough venue,
and I am sure my ears will be ringing from the clanging
cowbells for several days. Thankfully, the decibel level
began to drop as fans of the Bizarro Bulldogs headed
for the exits and someplace warm as the second half
moved along. Emptying an opponent’s home stadium has
become a trait of these Dogs.
Even though it was a night game in a hostile
environment made worse by those infernal cowbells
(WTH, SEC?). I never felt that I was watching a game that
would go down to the wire. The punt return touchdown
that closed the gap to 17-12 at the end of the first half
seemed more like an aberration than a harbinger of
doom.
It was another day at the office for the SEC East champs.
In the SEC, that “office” is often a brutal environment, even
for the defending national champions. Next Saturday in
Lexington, Kentucky, the Dawgs will face another test
of will. Yes, UK lost to lowly Vanderbilt Saturday, but the
Wildcats are another physically big squad playing smashmouth
football. Kentucky may run a more conventional
offense than Mississippi State or Tennessee, but playing
at home and coming off of an embarrassing loss will
motivate the ‘Cats. Meeting a big, physical team inspired
to shake off an embarrassing loss will present another
challenge for the SEC East champs.
WILL AND KIRBY... ALWAYS COACHING!
Kirby Smart said it best in his postgame press conference:
“We anticipated things being tough here, so how do you
anticipate things being tough? You take your DNA traits, and
you say they travel. They’re going with us, and we’re going
to use them when we need them. Because if you just lift a
50-pound bar all your life, you’re never going to get stronger,
right? You’ve got to lift heavy weight. We lifted some heavy
weight tonight in terms of our DNA, our composure, our
resiliency, our toughness, and we were ready to use them.
Because we practice them all year and it’s like, okay, here’s
our opportunity guys. What do we want to do with it?”
Kentucky will put those DNA traits to the test again next
Saturday, and the Dawgs will ace that exam, also.
GEORGIA – 45
MISSISSIPPI STATE - 19
BY: CLAY WATKINS
A look back at what decided the game
between Georgia and Mississippi State.
0
MSU converted zero of its three attempted
fourth down conversions. Coming into
the game, Coach Smart said that third and
fourth down conversions would be the
45-19
key to this game. UGA’s defense did not
disappoint. MSU was only 3-of-14 on thirddown
conversions. After the game, Smart
seemed pleased with the defensive effort,
noting that Kamari Lassiter made “a really
good play” with an open-field tackle on a
fourth and one from Georgia’s 9-yard line.
Georgia’s defense continues to play at an
“elite” level.
141
Ladd McConkey powered Georgia’s
offense with a combined total of 141 yards
running and receiving. The highlight was
a spectacular 70-yard touchdown run on
an end-around that saw McConkey out run
the MSU secondary for a score. McConkey
added five catches for 71 yards and another
touchdown. McConkey’s latest offensive
explosion follows his 94-yard effort against
Tennessee. McConkey will likely earn an
All-SEC selection at some level. As noted by
Stetson Bennett after the game, McConkey
has been “a stud from the moment he
67
rushing attack that ranks second-to-last in
walked [on campus].” With AD Mitchell still
the SEC, one spot ahead of MSU.
on the shelf recovering from an ankle injury,
McConkey has proven to be WR1 for the
Dawgs.
67
Zavion Thomas’ 67-yard punt return for a
touchdown in the closing seconds of the
first half evaporated Georgia’s comfortable
lead heading into the locker room. Georgia
had controlled the momentum but suffered
a quick three-and-out that forced the
Dawgs to punt to MSU with 19 seconds
remaining in the half. Thomas, who came
into the game
47
ranked third in the SEC with
9.9 yards per punt return, fielded the punt
off a bounce and outran the punt coverage
unit for a TD that brought MSU within one
score at the break. Georgia has struggled
just a bit of late with both kick coverage and
kick returns. This is an issue that the Dawgs
will need to button up heading into the
final two regular season games and the SEC
Championship game against LSU.
47
BULLDAWGILLUSTRATED 36 ISSUE THIRTEEN • KENTUCKY
Georgia gave up only 47 yards to MSU on
the ground while gaining 179 yards rushing.
Georgia’s run defense has been spectacular
and the return of Jalen Carter from injury
has bolstered an already stout defensive
front. Carter produced a total of seven
tackles, including one sack and 1.5 tackles
for loss. Georgia will look to bring the same
defensive effort to Lexington next week
when the Dawgs face a struggling Kentucky
4
THE STARKVILLE
COWBELLS!
The number of touchdowns produced
by Stetson Bennett. Bennett was 25/37
throwing the ball for 289 yards and three
touchdowns. Bennett also ran for another
score. Bennett’s TD run only covered
four yards but Bennett looked like Barry
Sanders as he figuratively broke an MSU
defender’s ankles with a stutter step move
that cleared his path into the endzone.
“The three touchdowns were critical,
really good throws,” Smart said. “He had
some really good throws to Ladd.” Smart
acknowledged that Bennett, who also
had two interceptions, had some throws
“he’d like to have back.” However, neither
interception came from a bad throw, as the
first resulted from Bennett having his arm
hit while throwing and the second was on a
tipped pass.

Saturdays and the famous
Bulldog Brunch from the Hilltop
Grille on Sundays.
— COMPILED BY JEFF DANTZLER
OFFENSIVE PLAYER
Ladd McConkey - Ladd McConkey works harder than Juan
Valdez’ donkey. Ladd not only attacked Mississippi State by
the air, but his fleet feet and smooth moves helped Georgia
jump to a 7-0 lead after his 70-yard sprint to open the game.
Not only did Ladd attack the Bulldogs on the ground, but his
five receptions for 71 yards brought his average per touch
against Mississippi State to a cool 23.5. With is two TDs in
Starkville, plus his sure hands on punt returns, Ladd certainly
is in talks for the Bulldogs’ offensive MVP of this year. Now the
fun begins … let’s ride Ladd McConkey UGA‘s super donkey to
the championship.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER
Jalen Carter - To have Jalen back at this time in the season is invaluable.
The senior from ApopKa,Florida stands 6-3, 300-pound and he truly is
an athlete on the field. Maybe for the first time this season he was full
strength against Mississippi State and his athletic ability shined. Seven
tackles with two solos a sack and 1.5 tackle for loss and one hurry, pretty
much explains why he will be one of the top three picks in the NFL
draft. His presence on the front line enables our linebackers to scrape
untouched and make tackle after tackle because Jalen demands a
double team every play. When Jalen is on, our linebackers are on, and
our secondary can do what they do the best... Cover! Jalen is our “go”
switch for the defense and will need to be on “go” from here on out.
SPECIAL TEAM PLAYER
Needs Improvement - In Greek mythology even the nastiest most
powerful gods have a weak spot. Georgia has two weak spots and
the special team is stepping up and becoming just as big a concern
as turnovers. Consistency executing special team play is as important
as your offenses scheme and defensive scheme. On Saturday versus
Mississippi State, Georgia’s special team cost field position and points
with Mississippi State’s 63-yard punt return for a touchdown. Our
defenders must have better control of their body and protect their
alleys in order to accomplish the goal of limiting the return yards. It’s a
defensive play and it needs to improve. And those near-errant snaps on
FGs effect timing which effects scoring. Gotta tighten-up guys!
JD’S TOP 15
— Jeff Dantzler
1. GEORGIA - The Bulldogs clinched the SEC East title
with a 45-19 victory over Mississippi State, improving
to 10-0 on the season. Georgia is on the road again this
week, heading to Kentucky, which got upset by Vanderbilt this
past weekend.
2. OHIO STATE - The Buckeyes pummeled Indiana
56-14 to make it 10-0 on the season. Now comes a
tough test at Maryland in what could be a high scoring
affair. Then comes the big one with Michigan. Ohio State is the
last Big Ten team to win it all.
3. MICHIGAN - That Wolverines running game was
extremely impressive in a 34-3 win over Nebraska. There
has been no slip back for Michigan, which won the Big
Ten and made the playoff last season. Illinois heads to the big
house on Saturday.
4. TCU - The Horned Frogs are 10-0 and got the
signature win over in-state rival Texas. TCU has locked up
a
spot in the Big XII Championship Game and are firmly in
the playoff picture. It’s off to struggling Baylor Saturday.
5. TENNESSEE - Missouri hung around for a while,
and then Tennessee hit its full stride offensively, pulling
away from the Tigers for a 66-24 win. Style points. Next
up is South Carolina in Columbia and then Vanderbilt in Music City.
6. SOUTHERN CAL - The Trojans took care of
Colorado Friday night 55-17 to improve to 9-1 on the
season. Now comes the two big rivals. First it’s UCLA in
the Rose Bowl and then Notre Dame in the Coliseum. The Trojans
are in the thick of everything.
7. LSU - The Bayou Bengals took a hard-fought,
old school defensive battle in Fayetteville, downing
Arkansas 13-10. LSU faces Texas A&M in the regular
season finale, but have secured in the SEC Championship Game.
They get UAB Saturday.
8. ALABAMA - The Crimson Tide pulled out a 30-24
victory over Ole Miss to make it 8-2 on the season.
Bryce Young is just tremendous, and has a shot at a
second straight Heisman Trophy. Alabama hosts Austin Peay
Saturday, then it’s Auburn.
FOOTBALL
MORE SPORTS
This year is flying by, and there are just two weeks left in the regular
season. The SEC had an awesome weekend with seven intraconference
games. Washington pulled off a great win over Oregon in the rejuvenated
PAC-12. Ohio State and Michigan keep rolling right along, and TCU has
put itself in position.
9. CLEMSON - The Tigers are bound for the ACC
Championship Game for the seventh time in the
last eight years. Clemson hosts Miami Saturday.
The Hurricanes, who just beat the Yellow Jackets, have been
struggling. Clemson is still in the playoff hunt.
10. OLE MISS - It was an all-time heartbreaker for Ole
Miss, as the Rebels had their SEC Championship Game
and playoff hopes ended by Alabama. Ole Miss must
regroup and head to Arkansas, which nearly upset LSU.
11. PENN STATE - The Nittany Lions have lost
twice this season, falling to Ohio State and Michigan.
A
30-0 win over Maryland was impressive. Penn State is
8-2, and off to Piscataway to take on Rutgers. It may
be cold there.
12. UTAH - The Running Utes have a monster game
Saturday at Oregon. The Ducks are reeling from a
heartbreaking loss to Washington. The PAC-12 is up for
grabs. If Utah wins Saturday, with a trip to struggling
Colorado next, the Utes are in.
13. NORTH CAROLINA - The Tar Heels are getting
excellent quarterback play from Drake Maye, and
are 9-1. A thrilling 36-34 win over Wake Forest is a
highlight win. The Yellow Jackets are bound for Chapel
Hill this weekend.
14. WASHINGTON - The Huskies got their win
of the year, pulling out a thrilling 37-34 victory over
rival Oregon in Eugene. The record is 8-2, and a
sweet bowl awaits if Washington can close strong. Colorado
visits Seattle Saturday.
15. OREGON - It was a heartbreaker for the
Ducks, who fell to Washington 37-34. The playoff
hopes are dashed but the PAC-12 is within reach.
Can Oregon rally and find a way against tough
Utah at Autzen Stadium?
