After tryingand failing forsometimeto
On behalf of my family, Iwould like to
thank you for the kind condolences that
we received after the recent and sudden
passing of my mother Liz.
Although it has been avery difficult
time, my family and Ihave found
comfort in your kind words, calls,
messages,and cards.
Isincerely appreciate yoursupport.
Thank you.
Last week was the first regular council
meeting of the new term and where we
discussedthe chlorination of our district
water supplies.
Taumata Arowai took over
responsibility for regulating drinking
water from the MinistryofHealth in
November 2021, via the Water Services
Act.
The Act requires all registeredwater
supplies to introducearesidual
disinfectant,such as chlorine, unless
awarded an exemption.
The chlorine requirement cameinto
effect on November 15.
Waimakariri DistrictCouncil has
submittedsix applications to Taumata
Arowai, seekingexemptions from
having to use chlorine in urbanwater
supplies of Rangiora, Kaiapoi,
WoodendPegasus, Oxford, Cust and
Waikuku Beach.
Earlier thismonth,wehosted
Taumata Arowai ChiefExecutiveand
Principaladviser Drinking Waterto
discuss the implications of the
November 15 date, and express the
community’s strong preferencefor
unchlorinated water, and apathway
fresh W
towards achieving exemptions.
Thereport to council followed this
meetingand details the options council
has to continueoperating urban water
supplies either chlorinated or
unchlorinated.
These options take account of a
programmeofwork to be done to meet
new compliance standards,until
exemptionsassessments are
considered.
The councillors and Iwelcome the
‘‘pragmatic approach’’ Taumata Arowai
are takingregardingenforcement of
mandatory chlorination.
Overthe coming weeks councilstaff
will work with Taumata Arowai to agree
atimetable for the assessment of our
chlorineexemption applications.
We expect thefirst decision in the
coming months.
Councilhas decided to continue to
operateour unchlorinatedsupplies as
we bring forwardwork alreadyplanned,
such as UV disinfection,arigorous
testing regime, and retain the option of
emergency chlorination at short notice
if required. This is an importanttool in
allowing us to operate nonchlorinated
schemes over thelong term. Councilhas
invested over$100m in water
infrastructureand has budgeted for 30
years ahead of planned upgrades.
Because of this, waterinWaimakariri is
of avery high standard.
Community engagement
Hurunui College youngsters are engaging
with their community.
Aprogramme focusedonlife skills is
keeping their College studentsproactive in
the community.
Funded by the Ministry of Education,
the programme Kia Pakari, meaning
‘strong and sturdy’,involvesagroup of
Year 9and 10 students engagingin
physical activity, well being development,
and creating strong communicationskills,
with an overall goal to raise achievement
and engagement.
Studentsare also encouraged to suggest
communitybased projects,their most
recentbeing abeach clean up at
Ashworths, Amberley and Leithfield
Beaches.
Course leader Lee Copplestone says the
projects are about character building and
learningtobecome good membersof
society.
‘‘It was great to have them do aproject
focused on the impact our actions can have
on the environment,’’ he says.
Hurunui DistrictCouncil’s Business
Connector Chris King was nearby with a
trailer for the rubbish collectedand to
lend ahand.
‘‘Itisalways good to see local young
people coming up with great ideas and
getting stuck into it,’’ Mr King says.
