Santa’s toy-makers in 

need of a new home

VOLUNTEER elves have given 

thousands of wooden toys to 

many deserving children across 

Canterbury for 50 years. 

But this year the volunteers 

at the Santa Claus Workshop 

Charitable Trust are hoping 

their wish for a permanent 

home will come true. 

The hunt for a new premises 

began in December last year 

after the technology block at 

Shirley Intermediate School was 

demolished. It was home to the 

workshop for almost 10 years. 

Since then, many volunteers 

have been working from home 

to get about 1100 handmade 

toys ready for the festive season. 

From cars to wheelbarrows 

and wooden chairs to cots for 

dolls, they craft a wide range 

of toys using high-quality 

timber. While some only take 

a few hours to complete, more 

intricate toys can take up to 20 

hours. 

Trust chairman Stewart Williams 

said the workshop’s elves 

might not be able to produce 

the toys next year if they cannot 

find a new home. In the worst 

case, the trust could be forced to 

take a break from toymaking. 

“We really don’t have much 

option. We’re still actively looking 

with the council, but we 

haven’t had much luck to date,” 

Williams said. 

“It’s not practical going forward 

from our perspectives . . .

The search for a new site has 

been difficult – but Williams 

said the trust is not alone. 

“I know most volunteer 

groups are also struggling with 

the same issue.” 

In August last year, the workshop 

was offered a vacant site 

at 280 Westminster St by the 

city council. However, the site 

was vandalised beyond repair a 

week before the equipment and 

tools were moved in. 

Said Williams: “They trashed 

the place, smashed all windows, 

and tore out all the wiring.

uninhabitable. 

“It restricted us from being 

able to support people that need

help in our society. We just want 

to be able to make toys to make 

kids happy.”

those it does have are generally 

being held for broader site 

redevelopment, such as park 

enhancements.”

Talented young cook among 

three to receive top award 

AN ASPIRING young cook 

from Hillmorton High School 

has taken out a prestigious 

award. 

Tyler Spatcher-Harrison was 

among three students who have 

received the Prime Ministers 

Vocational Excellence Award. 

The award was launched in 

2019 to celebrate the top highschool 

students enrolled in 

vocational study, with a $2000 

monetary prize. 

Along with fellow awardwinners 

Zane Roberts from 

Shirley Boys’ High School and 

Adam Barker from Lincoln High 

School, Tyler has juggled school 

this year with two days a week at 

Ara – Te Pūkenga. He has been 

studying cookery level three at 

Ara’s department of hospitality, 

business and service industries. 

“New stuff like knife skills and 

learning about different food has 

been great,” Tyler said. 

“I’m doing level four next year 

and my award will help pay for 

level five after that.” 

Tyler found his love of cooking 

through his dad and said he was 

glad he grabbed the chance to do 

the level three course. 

Tutor Arnya Watson said the 

award is a wonderful bonus for 

the students, who have gone 

above and beyond.

planning to come back to Ara, 

which Watson said demonstrates 

how the supportive approach 

to learning gives students a 

firm pathway to staying in education. 

And because the level three 

course is managed through 

school, there is an impact on 

their fees-free first year of tertiary 

study. 

Watson said it was rewarding 

helping students find where their 

future lies. 

“They get a lot out of their 

experience as they seek work. 

Instead of having to be shown 

everything they’ve already got 

skills – they know about clean 

workspaces and food safety, so it 

gives them a head start.”

had a good time, connected, 

learned something new and found 

a bargain.”

For birds’ sake, keep dogs off mudflats

IN 2018, the Avon-Heathcote 

Estuary was classified as a 

wetland of “international 

importance”. A prestigious and 

well-deserved title indeed. 

Did you know that 149 different 

bird species have been 

identified in the estuary? Or that 

the estuary and nearby oxidation 

ponds host a number of endemic 

bird species, which are classified 

as vulnerable, declining and/or 

endangered? 

Who does not enjoy watching 

the spoonbills sifting water for 

food, observing cormorants sitting 

along the edge with wings 

spread, drying their feathers, 

seeing the black and white oystercatchers 

digging for cockles or 

the godwits looking for worms? 

Or perhaps you enjoy watching 

the kingfishers perched on rocks 

and tree branches, ready to dive 

down for a “crab dinner”. 

Few people realise that some 

birds can only feed when the 

mudflats are not covered by 

water during low tide – when 

their mud source is accessible. 

SMALL WINDOW: Dogs off lead are chasing birds (and have killed penguins), disturbing their feeding patterns. 

Whereas other birds will be able 

to feed at low tide during the 

night, not all birds can. So, the 

combination of daylight and exposed 

mudflats provide the only 

window – for a few hours – for 

these birds to feed. 

This is also the time many 

dog owners enjoy walking along 

the estuary. And fair enough, 

as dogs love to run around, and 

dog owners enjoy the freedom 

of space to let their four-legged 

friends off the lead. 

However, the birds see people’s 

pets as predators and aim to stay 

well clear of them. 

When dogs are on lead being 

exercised along paths and walking 

tracks, this does not pose any 

issues. When dogs are let off lead 

to run around the mudflats and, 

even worse, allowed to chase 

birds, this becomes an absolute 

disaster. 

The estuary trust has conducted 

multiple surveys and 

observations of bird behaviour 

to gain ample evidence and concluded 

that, when birds see a dog 

running around, the birds will 

stop feeding and fly away. 

It can take up to 45 minutes 

for birds to regain confidence to 

settle down again and continue 

feeding. 

When this disturbance happens 

once or twice during a 

low tide the birds will have lost 

the chance to feed, as the tide 

returns to cover their feeding 

ground, and they will go hungry 

for the day. 

When this happens a few 

days in a row it means no food 

to gather, so no food for their 

chicks. No food means weight 

loss and, for migratory waterbirds, 

not enough strength come 

winter to fly to warmer areas 

like the North Island, Australia 

or beyond – across the world to 

Alaska in the godwits’ case. 

So please, dog owners, we are 

asking you to consider one of the 

reasons our estuary is unique is 

because of its stunning bird life. 

But our shorebirds are disappearing, 

with numbers declining every 

year. Keep dogs off the mudflats 

and on the lead when walking 

along the estuary. There are ample 

red zone areas and dog parks in 

Christchurch where your furry 

friends can run around, have fun, 

and chase a stick or ball – where 

they do not disturb birds. Let’s 

work together on this to keep our 

estuary a wetland of “international 

importance”. 

If you are not a dog owner 

or are a responsible dog owner 

and you see offenders – where 

dogs are off lead and not under 

effective control – then please 

note the details, such as the 

location, time and date, and 

report this to the city council 

for dog control officers to 

follow up.

The Cecilian Singers celebrate 40 years 

ALTHOUGH NOW in their 

42nd year, The Cecilian Singers 

are celebrating the 40th 

anniversary of the choir, with a 

special concert at The Piano on 

November 26. 

An equal voice choir for 

women, The Cecilian Singers 

was founded in 1981 by Nan Anderson. 

It is an auditioned choir 

with a varied repertoire, ranging 

from medieval to modern, both 

sacred and secular. 

The choir quickly established 

a national reputation with 

broadcasts on Radio New 

Zealand and Praise Be. 

It has also recorded two CDs 

that went to No. 1 on Concert 

NZ Classical Hits. Works by 

New Zealand composers, some 

especially commissioned, are 

frequently performed and the 

choir has twice travelled to 

Australia to showcase New 

Zealand music. 

There has always been an 

emphasis on supporting local 

musicians and encouraging 

outstanding talent. Featured 

artists have included Teddy 

Tahu Rhodes, Ann Lamont 

Lowe, Louisa Pilkington, 

Helen Charlton, and many 

instrumentalists who have gone 

on to NZSO or international 

careers. 

Over the past 40 years, the 

Cecilians have performed at 

least 100 times at concerts, plus 

events like weddings and music 

festivals. Events range from 

poetry and music at the Old 

Municipal Chambers, to singing 

in Hebrew with the Washington 

Women’s Choir at the Great 

Hall. 

They have performed at many 

iconic Christchurch venues that 

were casualties of the February 

22, 2011 earthquake – the 

Provincial Council Chambers, St 

Luke’s Church, the Music Centre 

Chapel and The Chapel of St 

John of God in Halswell. 

The choir has been fortunate 

to have worked under the baton 

of only four music directors in 

its history. Nan Anderson, who 

received the QSM in 2020 for 

services to choral music, was the 

director for 27 years. Anderson 

was followed by Jean Cumming, 

Rosemary Allison and the 

current director, renowned 

contralto Rosemary Turnbull. 

As has been the case for so 

many organisations, the choir’s 

original plans for celebrating 

the milestone were disrupted 

by Covid-19, resulting in 

three cancellations of planned 

concerts. The celebration on 

Saturday will be the culmination 

of two years of planning, 

rehearsing, and waiting. 

It will offer traditional and 

modern classical compositions 

(Brahms, Britten and Orban) 

and a piece by NZ composer 

David Hamilton. The choir will 

be accompanied by pianist Sarah 

Kang, harpist Helen Webby and 

horns Emma Eden and Bernard 

Shapiro.

for more than four decades.

BRAINTREE, the first wellness 

centre of its kind in New 

Zealand to support people with 

neurological conditions, is 

holding an open day in Papanui 

on Saturday. 

The centre at 70 Langdons Rd 

will be open to the public from 

10am to noon. 

“We have had such positive 

feedback from everyone attending 

either an activity or support 

session since we opened in June 

this year, we want to give the 

public the chance to see just how 

special this facility is and why 

it is earning such high praise,” 

BrainTree general manager Phil 

Marshall-Lee said. 

“We hope people will pop in, 

have a look around and enjoy a 

coffee.” 

BrainTree is the new home for 

Dementia Canterbury, Multiple 

Sclerosis and Parkinson’s Canterbury, 

the Southern Stroke 

Foundation, Southern Music 

Therapy, Aspire Canterbury and 

Adult Conductive Education 

Trust. 

“The centre is already making 

life so much better for the many 

people living in the community 

with neurological conditions,” 

Marshall-Lee said. 

Conditions such as Multiple 

Sclerosis, Parkinson’s and 

dementia are progressive, and 

while some people become 

severely disabled, most can 

live with relatively moderate 

symptoms for longer periods of 

time. The wellness centre is a key 

component to ensuring those affected 

can still live a full life after 

a diagnosis of a neurological 

condition. 

Marshall-Lee said the centre 

is equipped with a gym, studio, 

cafe and meeting spaces for individual 

or group use, as well as 

being a place to share and learn 

from real-life experiences, take 

part in activity support groups 

and access specialist well-being 

services. It can also host conferences 

for up to 80 people, with 

all inquiries welcome. 

The $8 million complex is the 

culmination of a huge community 

effort since Dementia Canterbury, 

and Multiple Sclerosis and 

Parkinson’s Canterbury joined 

forces in 2017 in the Canterbury 

Brain Collective, a registered 

charity, to build a home for the 

two societies. 

The cost has been almost 

entirely funded by private 

individuals, businesses and community 

trusts in Christchurch. 

The donors, many of whom have 

known someone personally affected, 

have opened their hearts 

and contributed generously, all 

sharing the vision of creating 

BrainTree, Marshall-Lee said.
