Last year’s Christmas in the Village in Mount Sterling
enjoyed the largest turnout in its history. Members
of the Mount Sterling Chamber of Commerce,
hosts of the community event, are hoping to keep the
momentum going this year.
“Being out on the street and seeing all the people
interacting and just having a good time—that’s what I
really thrive on. We hope to see that return this year,”
said Barbie Wallace, one of the event’s organizers.
Christmas party planned for South Solon kids
POSTAL PATRON
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Tiphany Kennedy-Chaffin moved to South Solon
13 years ago. She raised her son there. She’s a member
of the village council there. She loves living
there. And this holiday season, she is giving back to
her beloved community by throwing a Christmas
party for children.
She’s calling the party “Christmas in the Village.”
The event will take place 2-4 p.m. Dec. 3 at
the Stokes Township Firehouse, 7105 E. Main St.,
South Solon.
Every child who visits the firehouse during the
party will receive gifts and snacks and have an opportunity
to visit with Santa. Picture This Photography
will take photos of children with Santa for $5
each. Half of the cost will go back into the Christmas
party fund for next year. The other half goes to
cover photo supplies.
While the party is for all kids in the village,
Kennedy-Chaffin has an especially soft heart for
those whose families are going through tough times.
“We unfortunately have a few families in town
who really struggle during the holidays, and the
children do not always get any type of celebration. I
want to bring smiles to their faces, if even just for a
couple of hours,” she said.
Kennedy-Chaffin is especially thankful to the
Stokes Township trustees and the fire department for
jumping on board to help make the party a reality.
“They’re pulling the trucks out of the firehouse.
We’re setting up tables. It’s going to be a big to-do,” she
said. “I’m tickled to death. I’m so excited about this.”
Some of the toys for the gift giveaway came courtesy
of a chili supper the firehouse hosted in late October.
The cost for the supper was $6 or a donated
toy. Kennedy-Chaffin also is thankful for the Madison-Plains
and London students who have volunteered
to help with set-up and hand out gifts.
The party is the second community-wide event
Kennedy-Chaffin has organized this year. This summer,
she coordinated a village-wide yard sale. She
plans to make that and the Christmas party annual
events. These efforts are part of her mission to rejuvenate
the town.
“I believe South Solon has great potential and
just needs a jumpstart to get back to what it once
was,” she said.

Since 1992, the Central Ohio AFP board has
publicly recognized local philanthropic leaders
and celebrated their impact in the community
through National Philanthropy Day.
Santino, a sophomore at West Jefferson High
School, has found himself within the cancer world
the entirety of his life. In March 2006, just 10
days after Santino’s parents, Michael and Brooke,
found out they were expecting a child, Michael
was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma—a
rare head and neck cancer. In 2015, at 9 years old,
Santino made the decision to stand up and do
something in the fight against cancer. At a young
age, he possessed a desire to help others going
through similar battles.
Santino Carnevale
succumbed to his long battle with cancer in the
fall of 2016, but that hasn’t slowed Santino’s
efforts in the least.
Proceeds raised from Santino’s initiatives
have exceeded $135,000 for the Head and Neck
Cancer Strategic Fund.
Santino holds a 4.0 grade point average
(GPA), serves as class vice president, and is a
scholar athlete at West Jefferson High School.
He is a member of the soccer and track teams
and played basketball his freshman year. He
is active in Renaissance Class, a group that
works to promote and improve school culture.
He also is a member of student council.
Outside of school, he is a member of the James Ambassador Society
Santino began by organizing a lemonade stand and bake sale.
He did it in honor of his father, as well as his grandfather, the late
Franklin County Sheriff Jim Karnes, who passed away from pancreatic
cancer when Santino was 4 years old. The first year of the
lemonade stand, Santino raised $5,000, and he has never looked
back. He formed an initiative known as “Santino’s Crusade for a
Cancer-Free World.” In addition to the lemonade stand and bake
sale, he hosts an Ohio State tailgate party in West Jefferson. His
family, friends, and classmates have joined him in his efforts.
Santino is widely known throughout The James as one of the
youngest adolescents to establish a fund and is often referred to as
at OSUCCC-James and is the youngest member inducted into
the society. He is a referee for West Jefferson youth soccer and has
served as assistant coordinator of the West Jefferson Ox Roast.
In addition to the AFP philanthropy award, Santino has received
the 2018 Jefferson Award which recognizes individuals who do extraordinary
things in their community, the
Shining Star Award from the Sons of Italy
honoring people who make a difference, and
the Leon Garrett Award for students with
above average GPAs and outstanding leadership
and community involvement.
place at the high school.
The next day, on Dec. 9, the jazz band will
perform from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Polaris
Also on Dec. 9, the jazz band and chamber
played the gig in 2019. Following a two-year
hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they
are making their second appearance. In addition
to performing for two hours, the band
mean they are going to like it, nor does it mean they are going to be
well-behaved.
It is a good thing almost all of the actors in “The People We Hate
at the Wedding” are charismatic because the characters they play
tend to act out in ways that are hard to sympathize with. That is
not to say every book, film, or television show has to have likeable
characters at its center, but you end up with a harder read or watch
without them.
The fact that the audience can, at times, feel sorry for the characters
is another testament to the skill and charm of the actors, but
it does bring up script issues. Although wickedly sharp at times,
the story (adapted by Lizzy Molyneux-Logelin and Wendy
Molyneux from a novel by Grant Ginder) does not delve too deeply
into the characters’ motivations. So, we cannot fully embrace their
acts of rebellion. At times, it just feels too bratty and unjustified,
which I suppose can be a form of entertainment if the mood hits
just right.
Not everyone can enjoy watching films filled with awkward moments—director
Claire Scanlon has a true talent for staging cringeworthy
scenes—but I think those who can tolerate it will find some
enjoyment from “The People We Hate at the Wedding.” Not everything
the film does hits, and some of the more sincere and dramatic
moments feel out of place, but the film will make you laugh, smile,
and thank a deity that your immediate family is not like theirs. And
if it is, well, try to turn that dynamic into a book or a script because
some people would really enjoy it.
many younger members of our ensemble
look to her for help and as a model of
professionalism in all we do. Kinsey is
well deserving of this honor.”
The London Rotary Club is pleased to
that wherever her future pathway takes
her, Olivia will be a wonderful example
of what happens when a person works
Fire station visit
Tri-County Fire Department was the destination for Mount Sterling Public Library’s Preschool
Storytime on Oct. 17. In honor of Fire Prevention Month, the group took a walk to
the fire station after reading the book, “No Dragons for Tea: Fire Safety for Kids (and
Dragons)” by Jean Pendziwol and Martine Gourbault. Firefighter Bruce Alkire taught the
kids about what to do in case of an emergency, such as a fire, and explained the Stop,
Drop & Roll technique. Firefighter Connor Deitz donned his turnout gear to encourage
the kids not to be scared, and Lt. Zach Graham provided information about the gear,
hoses, tools and equipment on the trucks. The trucks were a big hit. The visit was cut
short due to a fire run, so the kids left a big thank-you card for the firefighters to read
upon their return. Those who took part in the special storytime and field trip included:
(from left) Rudy Sebens, Josh and Logan Marcum, Matthew Winner, Jayce and Levi Puckett,
and Aria and Jennifer Kern.
ADVISORY
The National Trade Association
we belong to has
purchased the following
classifieds. Determining
the value of their service
or product is advised by
this publication. In order
to avoid misunderstandings,
some advertisers do
not offer “employment”
but rather supply the
readers with manuals, directories
and other materials
designed to help
their clients establish mail
order selling and other
businesses at home. Under
NO circumstance
should you send any
money in advance or give
the client your checking,
license ID or credit card
numbers. Also beware of
ads that claim to guarantee
loans regardless of
credit and note that if a
credit repair company
does business only over
the phone it’s illegal to request
any money before
delivering its service. All
funds are based in US
dollars. Toll Free numbers
may or may not
reach Canada. Please
check with the Better
General’s Consumer
Protection Section
