School Update
Manukura Korero
After the success of our Senior Prize giving, we look forward to the opportunity to thank our
Stakeholders and contributors from the business community at our annual He Mihi Maioha -
Appreciation Night. We are also looking forward to celebrating the successes of our Y1-10 ākonga
at the Junior Prize giving ceremony. The Y9/10 prize giving will take place on Wednesday 14th of
December and the Y1-8 prize giving on Friday the
16th of December.
As we rush towards the end of Term 4 we are
excited with the prospect of the Christmas gift
celebration for our Year 1-8 ākonga. This is an
initiative organised by our Studentleaders. We are
currently after donations of empty shoe boxes,
wrapping paper and any items that can be gifted
to ākonga 5-13 years old. We would like to thank
the generous members of the wider community
that have responded to our request for support of
this initiative. If you would like to donate towards
this, please contact Natalie Malan on mnn@
haeata.school.nz.
Our ākonga hosted a mini community market
on Friday 18 November. This featured some
goods that they had designed and made. Te
Tai O Mahaanui was filled with excitement and
our young entrepreneurs enjoyed a successful
afternoon of engaging with kaimahi, peers and the
community.
Keep an eye out for the Cell phone policy survey
that will be sent to whānau via hail. Ākonga will
have the opportunity to complete this at kura.
Preparations are well underway for the AFFIRM
community event happening on the 3rd of December. We have some solo artists as well as our
Pasifika and Kapa haka groups performing on centre stage at 12pm. Thank you to ACTIS for this
opportunity.
This unique learning opportunity aims to
raise our tamariki’s aspirations for higher
education and encourage their lifelong
learning. The University of Canterbury
and Lincoln University are working in
partnership to deliver the programme, which is the first of its kind in New Zealand. So proud of
our talented academics who graduated in the Passport to Learning programme for ākonga aged
7 – 14 years.
The Christchurch School Music Festival
2 November 2022
After a few months of practising the songs for the festival we had our first rehearsal where a
number of schools within the Canterbury East area came to Haeata for the afternoon. This gave us
an opportunity to see what it feels like to sing as a whole group.
On November the 2nd we took a van to the Christchurch Town Hall for our final rehearsal. We
were there for most of the day. We went through all of the songs. We practised and practised.
All of the schools that were going to sing that evening were there. Some of the orchestras were
also there practising.
We were pretty excited as it was a big deal for Haeata as it was the first time our kura joined the
festival.
We sang our hearts out. The orchestra was amazing as were the special singing items. It was a
very long day but enjoyable.
We had fun!
Hospitality
On the 29th of September 2022 a group of Kōmanawa ākonga were very fortunate to attend the
AuKia ora and greetings from our wonderful commercial kitchen facilities at Haeata.
Term 4 is always such a great opportunity for reflection and, as I look at my ākonga now,
compared to where they were at the start of the course, I am hugely filled with pride as I reflect
on how their kete of skills, knowledge and confidence has grown from strength to strength.
Incrementally and progressively from the “I can’t do that”, to the “Wow, I can’t believe I just made
that!”. Each one of those moments makes me so proud!
The seniors have now left with a plethora of practical cooking and hospitality credits to their
name. They are armed with the skills to try new recipes, substitute ingredients, implement healthy
and cost effective alternatives, and have the vision and confidence to be creative in the kitchen
and stand proudly by their work. They deserve the privilege of wearing a chef’s jacket and, if I still
owned a restaurant, I would employ them in a heartbeat.
The juniors fill me with the warm fuzzies too, particularly the year 9’s. It took a while to garner
a cohesive team but with patience and firm non negotiable expectations, I now have a class
that I can’t wait to teach and inspire with more culinary creations. The pictures are some of my
favourites of when we had a design, a sweet and also a savoury, bread of your choice. We also had
a stack of pancakes competition. Those are the teaching moments I love. Life long skills using at
hand, or inexpensive ingredients.
The other pictures are of some cakes, and finger food platters created by the year 11’s, and my
favourite picture of them all, my top Hospitality students hard at work.
Y8 Technology: Soft Materials
Year 8 ākonga completed their soft materials project where they
made a cushion or an apron. Most ākonga painted while others
tie-dyed their fabric. Skills learned
included pattern making, measuring
seam allowance, cutting fabric and
sewing skills. Some ākonga found the
tasks challenging and all found the
sewing process relaxing.
At the end of Term 4 ākonga will be
able to take their soft material project
home.
