Shirley Boys’ High School
student cooks his
way to prestigious award
AN ASPIRING young
cook from Shirley Boys’
High School has earned a
prestigious award.
Zane Roberts was among
three students who have
scooped the Prime Minister’s
Vocational Excellence
Award.
The award was launched
in 2019 to celebrate the
top high school students
enrolled in vocational study
with a $2000 prize.
Along with Hillmorton
High School’s Tyler
Spatcher-Harrison and
Lincoln High School’s
Adam Barker, Roberts has
juggled school this year
along with two days a week
completing cookery level
three at Ara-Te Pūkenga’s
department of hospitality,
business and service
industries.
Wanting to get beyond
Young and Healthy Charitable Trust
and Virtual Adventure founder Kim
Harvey visited Pareawa Banks Ave
School last week and gifted a class of
pupils a pair of Asics shoes each.
The group was among 22,000 Kiwi
children in Canterbury joining forces
with celebrity heroes including Ardie
Savea, Ameliaranne Ekenasio, Kane
Williamson and Samantha Charlton to
washing dishes in a restaurant
and working toward
becoming a chef, Roberts
said his plans are set for
next year.
“I’m going to do level
four in the workplace. I’ll
go to work, and they’ll
teach me everything but
every so often I’ll get to
come back to Ara to do
assessments which is cool.
I’ll get paid to learn so I’m
happy.”
Tutor Arnya Watson said
the award is a wonderful
bonus for these students
who have gone above and
beyond.
“They’re my high achievers.
They’ve worked hard
out of class to practice and
do extra competitions.
Anything that was available
to do – they pushed
themselves.
“I still can’t believe we
had three in one class
though.”
Most of her 2022 class
are planning on returning
to Ara, which Watson
said demonstrates how the
supportive approach to
learning gives students a
firm pathway to staying in
education.
And because the level
three course is managed
through school, there is
impact on their fees – free
first year of tertiary study.
Watson said it is rewarding
helping these students
find where their future lies.
“They get a lot out
of their experience as
they seek work. Instead
of having to be shown
everything they’ve already
got skills – they know about
clean workspaces and food
safety, so it gives them a
head start.”

The health and well-being
programme took the children on a
virtual trip around the globe, instilling
healthy habits along the way such as
moving their bodies, eating extra fruit
and vegetables, drinking more water,
getting a good night sleep and reducing
leisure time spent on screen.
New Brighton Seaside
Christmas Parade
December 10th
New Brighton’s Christmas Parade is back
this year to kick off the holiday season.
This event has been organised by the New
Brighton Project who are dedicated to
supporting New Brighton’s growth as a diverse
and inclusive community through celebration
and engagement for the past two decades. All
are welcome to join in the day’s festivities.
The joy of the season surrounds the parade
and all the affiliated activities. Bring the kids
to meet Santa on the beach or stop by yourself
to let Santa know your holiday wish. Enjoy
the community parade from the footpath or
bring a seat to enjoy the participants. Santa
will close the parade off with all his well
wishes.
After the parade walk the short distance
over to their Seaside Market for Christmas gift
shopping. They have a huge array of art, crafts,
gift ware and delicious food. There are stalls
which offer something for every member of
the family.
A bouncy castle for the littlies will be
available. Free face painting with so many
options to choose from including fairies,
elves, animals and more so you can take your
memories home with you.
Enjoy the entertainment and don’t forget to
tell Santa your wish before you leave.
