Congratulations to Jon Lopez of Friends Tavern
who is Get Out! magazine’s Waiter of the year
Hello, Jon. What is your
favorite part of your
job? How long have you
been working at Friends
Tavern
It’s being able to share
with people from different
cultures. It is the best
experience you can have,
not only with people of
your same nationality, but
also with people of other
nationalities. You learn a lot,
especially about their food
and typical dishes. I have
been part of the Friends
Tavern staff for nine years,
and I have met many people
who have become part of my
family
What are the
challenges of your job
and how do you deal
with them?
The challenges I face at work
involve keeping track of all
the orders while engaging
the customers. It can be quite
overwhelming. However, I
see this as an opportunity
to meet new faces, as well
as feeling satisfied knowing
i have provided the utmost
services to all of these
individuals.
Aside from your
job, what are your
aspirations ?
I am a person with many
goals and dreams. Every
day, I strive to get ahead and
achieve everything I set my
mind to, apart from being
a waiter. Two years ago, I
obtained a license as a real
estate agent and notary
public in the city of New York.
Do you have a favorite
drink?
I’m not really a drinker, but
when a client
invites me to
a drink, I like
Buchanan’s.
our entire community. On the
second Friday of the month,
we have the “Machos” super
party with more than four
sexy dancers and the best
music. On the last Sunday of
the month, we have a party
that has been going on for
more than four years called
GOGO XPLOSION, where
there are more than six sexy
dancers in the bar, free shots
for all our clients and an
environment where people
enjoy the best music. Do
not hesitate to spend such
a pleasant night with the
sexiest staff.
What are the shifts you
work, so people who
like you can find you?
How does your
presence fit in with the
atmosphere at work?
I have always been a hard
working individual from a
very young age. As a Latino
male, It has been instilled
to have a hard working
mentality, and the nature
of this job exemplifies that,
considering how much we
engage folks, as well as
constantly moving around to
provide optimal service.
Friends Tavern is one of the
oldest bars in the area. For 33
years, it has been providing
the best service to our
community. It’s open seven
days a week from 5 PM to 4
AM. On Wednesday nights,
they are pretty busy with
happy hour prices–all drinks
$5–and great atmosphere
and the best music by our
resident DJ. On Fridays
My work shifts are
and Sunday. Everyone is
cordially invited to spend a
there to serve you with all the
DJ JOSHUA RUIZ
A native New Yorker of Cuban and
Puerto Rican dissent, DJ Joshua
Ruiz relocated to Miami to go to
college, and it was there that he
was first exposed to nightclubs’
music and venues where he met
industry legends.
In the summer of 2021, DJ Joshua
joined the nightlife scene in
New York and had the ability to
play various crowds. He became
popular quickly with his blended
sound of Tech House, tribal circuit
and high energy progressive
beats. DJ Joshua Ruiz takes over
INTERVIEW
During a conversation with
Joshua, I found his desire to
elevate tradition and keep the
industry alive very inspirational.
So what made you
get into DJ’ing?
I come from a music family. I
have always had a passion for
music growing up. My mom
was a bartender at Crobar,
and my uncle is DJ Adam
Ruiz AKA DJ Mada has had
a great influence on me, so I
was always exposed to music
I guess you could say it’s in
my blood. As I became an
adult, post military, In about
2017, I started gogo dancing,
and DJ’ing in 2021 then it
progressed to me wanting
to take control of the music.
That’s not really
that long ago. But
that’s cool.
Yeah, I know, it progressed a
lot faster than I expected.
I’ve been working hard.
I bet you have.
DJ’ing is hard work.
It is 75% networking and 25%
music.
Do you do your own
mixes?
So right now, I’m still a DJ
in progress. I do a couple
of mashups here and there.
The production is part of it.
It’s probably gonna start in
the next year or so. Once my
name starts getting exposed
more, then I’ll start putting out
my own mixes.
I hear you have a
huge event lined for
New Year’s Eve at Q
in NYC.
Yes, New Years Eve at The Q
where I’m also a new resident,
The Q is my home in New
York City, I’m doing their
events on Saturday’s.
Make it a
I’m also looking forward to
Day weekend in Los Angeles.
Follow me on social media for
more dates.
Aside from DJing,
what do you do?
My 9 to 5 job is I am a
construction manager for a
company that my family runs
and owns. I do a lot of Interior
design, modeling bookcases,
temporary storage solutions
here in the city. And then music
is pretty much my life. Also, I
am a big baseball fan.
Baseball? Well I
hope you like the
Yankees.
I do. I’m a big Yankee fan. I am
heavily invested emotionally
and sometimes financially.
Do you have a DJ that you
were most influenced by?
Abel Aguilera. Not only is he
a personal friend, but he’s
also been the biggest mentor
in keeping me grounded and
showing me the ropes, telling
me what to do and what not to
do. Abel and Eddie Martinez
are the two. Eddie is on the
radar and he puts on good
music.
As a DJ, do you have
a favorite type of
music?
I play all types of music, but
my favorite type to play is
definitely tribal progressive.
I like underground too. I
think I mentioned some
classic vocals, sultry, tribal
progressive, house…
Where do you want
to be in five years?
I want to be the most
requested DJ. I definitely want
to be producing tracks of stuff
that I made and recognized
globally. Being someone
that’s known to care about the
culture as well. Preserving the
culture.
Is there anything
that you’d like to
talk about that I
haven’t asked?
I just want to let it be known
that the number one thing to
me is preserving the legacy of
the DJs that have come before
me and have opened the doors
for us.That kind of gets lost.
So I guess you could say I pay
my respects, making sure the
people who came before will
get the recognition as well.
BEST BAR OF THE YEAR
INTERVIEW >>>
Hi Ted, Rise Bar has had tremendous
success since its opening on Ninth
Ave @ 56th St. You, Tracy and John
Blair have even doubled the venue
in size, which is really unheard of
in the nightlife business—not to
mention in NYC nightlife. It’s an epic
challenge to conquer. What were the
reasons that you expanded your bar
to double its size?
We had wanted to expand Rise or add
another location for a while—especially
after the community board rejected our
first application for the Spot. Although
we did eventually get approval for our
sister bar, we remained vigilant for an
opportunity to add a second bar and
dance floor to Rise.
Co-owner Ted Arenas
has had phenomenal
success of Rise Bar, so
much so that he was
able to expand. Get Out!
Magazine was able to talk
to Ted regarding the bar
and their sister bar for
the near future.
When COVID hit, the business next
door to Rise vacated the space, so we
annexed it. Undertaking this expansion
during the pandemic was a huge risk,
especially given how oversaturated
Hell’s Kitchen has become with
LGBTQ+ nightlife venues. But we
believe in our brand, and we wanted to
grow our business by serving food and
having more room to accommodate
private parties, corporate events and
other celebrations.
What’s your signature drink and why?
Our rotating seasonal menus have many
delicious classic and specialty cocktails, but
I’d have to say the Samurai Old Fashioned
is especially good. It’s made with Japanese
whiskey and we use an orange oil spray
to give it a flavorful zest of citrus. Its taste
stands out and our customers love it!
What are your favorite food items on the
menu? And tell us about your weekend
brunch.
Our truffle fries are one of our most popular
weekday orders, and our power bowl with
grilled chicken and avocado pea hummus
is a bartender fave because it is so healthy
and tasty. And although our brunch menu is
packed full of excellent choices, the chicken
and waffles is definitely a fan favorite.
When hiring a bartender, what attributes
do you look for?
First and foremost, we
look for bartenders who
are both experienced and
personable, and it’s critical
that they demonstrate skill
and expertise behind the
bar. We try to select people
that we think will interact
well with customers and that
can handle unpredictable
situations and difficult behavior
in a professional manner.
Commitment to the job,
punctuality and reliability are
also attributes we emphasize in
our selection process.
to accuse us of wrongdoing instead of
taking accountability for their behavior.
And honestly, if a situation gets to the point
where we have to take any sort of action
against a customer, it’s because they
were doing something harmful, offensive,
or dangerous to the people around them.
We never like having to use disciplinary
action, but we will always act quickly and as
needed to ensure the safety and wellbeing
of our other customers and our employees.
On a more positive note, I’d say the most
rewarding part of my job is seeing people
happy and enjoying and appreciating the
positive atmosphere my employees and I
work to create. I absolutely love hearing
stories of how people met their partners at
Rise and are now engaged or married. It’s
incredible to feel like a part of something
that brings people together.
What’s the most difficult part
of your job, and what’s the
most fun for you?
One thing that really gets to
me is that, when someone is
too intoxicated to get into the
bar (or is thrown out because
of inappropriate or dangerous
behavior), they’re often quick
Why do you feel that patrons frequent
your bar rather than other bars?
To be honest, I’m not sure that people
frequent Rise and the Spot more than other
local LGBTQ+ bars. But I do think one
thing that sets us apart is how much pride
we take in having friendly staff and going
above and beyond to accommodate our
customers, their needs, and their wishes.
We really go out of our way to ensure that
our patrons have a safe and welcoming
environment whenever they’re inside our
walls.
Is there a favorite night or event for you,
and why?
I love our drag brunches. They’re fairly new,
but the positive customer response to them
has been overwhelming! Seeing how much
people enjoy these shows and receiving
their glowing feedback is so encouraging
and makes me really happy.
What advice would you give to those
who dream of having a career like yours?
Get ready to be on call 24/7, and know that
sometimes stress from your job will keep
you up at night. It’s a big sacrifice, so you
have to be sure you really love what you do
if you’re going to make that commitment.
A lot of people see owners and managers
hosting or giving out drink tickets, and
they think based on this that the job is
easy and mostly fun. But what you see in
those moments is just the tiny tip of a huge
iceberg. That “front-of-house” aspect of the
job only accounts for a minority of
what we do. The behind-the-scenes
logistics of running a business are
a lot less glamorous and a lot more
tedious and time-consuming!
Could you give us an overview
of your weekly entertainment
lineup and happy hour specials
and hours?
Our happy hour special is halfprice
drinks, and it runs daily from
opening until 9 P.M. Our weekends
are packed with shows! Brunch happens
on both Saturday and Sunday, with two
seatings each day. Izzy Uncut and Skye
Walker host the Saturday brunch, while
Holly Box-Springs and Egypt do Sundays.
Then, on Sunday night, we have Playground
Sundays with Chicky Gorgina and Jacklynn
Hyde.
Our Monday night event is called Messy
Mondays, and it’s hosted by Pissi Myles and
Jasmine Rice LaBeija. Tuesdays, we have
Cut Throat Karaoke with Emily McNamara,
and our Legend Wednesdays star Marti
Gould Cummings, Pattaya Hart, Lexington
Banks, and Bootsie LeFaris. But that’s
not all we have—for a complete list of our
weekly shows, check out risebarnyc.com!
You and your co-owners have also
recently added a sister bar to the Hell’s
Kitchen community. Would you like to
speak about it and add anything else that
we didn’t cover?
If you haven’t yet checked out our sister bar,
the Spot, please do so! It has a lot of special
things in common with Rise, including a
huge stage and amazing sound system.
The Spot is not yet allowed to stay open
until 4 A.M.. on weekends, but we recently
received approval for a license change that
includes those later operating hours. That
change will most likely enter into force in
spring 2023. Once that happens, we will
hold a relaunch of our weekend events and
start some exciting new things as well.
IS THERE A FAVORITE
NIGHT OR EVENT FOR
YOU AND WHY?
There are hundreds.
They are all different
and unique and some
may cater to a specific
audience. The fun for
me is to make each
event go seamlessly
and memorable for the
guests.
WHAT ADVICE
WOULD YOU
GIVE TO THOSE
WHO DREAM OF
HAVING A JOB
LIKE YOURS?
I think most have a
misconception of
what it entails to run
a successful bar or
nightclub. You can
work in nightlife for
a number of years
holding only one
position, and that
doesn’t make one
qualified to become
a general manager/
director of operation
or whatever title.
The position is
many occupations
looped into one. You
have to know a little
about everything.
Management skills are a
given, business, law, bar
science, sound, lighting,
music, and culture. It
takes years to retain it
all. You also must have
thick skin and be strongminded
to last in this
business and remain
successful.
GLOBAL DJ PHENOMENA:
GET OUT! MAGAZINE DJ OF THE YEAR
TONY MORAN
USHERS IN NEW YEARS EVE @ THE EAGLE
What better and more exciting
way to usher in the New Year than
with iconic, globally acclaimed DJ
Tony Moran, who has just been
named DJ of the Year by Get Out
Magazine!
For those who aren’t familiar, Tony
Moran is a DJ, singer, songwriter
and record producer who has hit
the Billboard charts at #1 many
times. Aside from his own super
hits, he has produced, remixed
and worked with artists including
Madonna, Michael Jackson,
George Michael, Mariah Carey,
Whitney Houston, Selena Gomez,
and a barrage of others. He began
his career with friend Albert
Cabrea as the Latin Rascals and
shortly after that, he was hired
by Fever Records to write songs
for other artists. The result of
that was the song “Show Me” by
the Cover Girls, which became
his first top 40 hit. He constantly
continues to write songs and
travel the world as a number one
DJ extravaganza.
I was fortunate to catch Tony for
a conversation in the midst of his
studio work and travel time to talk
about the hottest party planned
for New Years Eve…with the most
compelling DJ on the planet!
INTERVIEW >>>
NEW YORK AND THE EAGLE ARE SO
EXCITED TO SEE YOU RETURN TO THE
CITY, ESPECIALLY FOR NYE….
I’m very excited to come back to New
York. The Eagle has rebranded itself and
reinvested in itself…It’s more than just a
fetish bar. It’s actually become a high-tech
disco complex. They have a humongous
dance floor–kind of like Splash, if you
remember what that used to be. I’m very
excited to be returning there.
I WANTED TO GET YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT
RETURNING TO NEW YORK AND BRINGING
IN THE NEW YEAR AT THE EAGLE…
Traveling around the world for several years,
sometimes your favorite places in the world aren’t
with you because the timing is just not right. Most
venues want you on the same weekend, like New
Year’s Eve, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents’
Day, July 4th, Labor Day and all these holidays,
so I just have to wait it out. So my return to the
Eagle was very special, since growing up there.
So as I said, I’ve been traveling around the
world and doing all these amazing events over
the last several years and somehow because of
scheduling issues I have, playing in New York
City has eluded me. It’s left sort of a little void in
my heart because my energy originates from New
York City.
YOU HAVE A VERY UNIQUE STYLE….
Thankfully, my brand and my legacy have led to
my upbeat and very positive outlook on music. I
also have such a special flavor for doing things
that stimulate the sexuality, and it makes it even
more provocative with such a variety of feelings…
and I get to do this many times when I play after
hours in L.A. I’ve done many after-hours in L.A.
just so I could keep that edge because I am a
songwriter and a producer of wonderful music and
my goal in life is to be able to entertain people
and leave them with something to remember
outside of the experience… and many times,
it’s the song. Like “Hands in the Air”, the Tony
Moran anthem. It’s something sexy, something
believable and as I said provocative. I have really
prepared for providing all of this content that’s
going to stimulate your mind. Musically, from
another perspective, you really haven’t heard me
playing New York or Los Angeles or in Miami or
in Fort Lauderdale, where I could hit you hard…I
have nothing to prove except to stimulate your
senses and give you an enjoyable time. So I’m
really ready to show New York how much I’ve
missed them and I want them to know that I am
hoping as well that they let me know how happy
they are to see me again.
investigate and study my repertoire knowing
that all those things can be going through your
mind. What I can at least provide to you is that
the audience themselves will know that the effort
was made to stimulate, generate, electrify and
create memories that you will remember. So 2023
is going to come in with a bang and I’m going to
make sure that happens.
I’M SURE YOU WILL! AND THERE IS NO ONE
BETTER QUALIFIED ON THE PLANET.
I am very honored to hear you say that and I’m
so happy that I got this call from you. The owners
and the staff have been amazing. Again, it’s a
mutual appreciation society. I am as much excited
to give you something special as you want to
hear it. Many of the current and resident DJs are
friends of mine. We share music and we also
share the excitement of those key destinations
and places of musical joy where the journey
reveals itself to you. Everyone is so ready and I
am very much ready. So everyone be ready to
stay out for a while….. then right after that, I am
on a 7 AM flight to Los Angeles to do it all over
again. I will be in New York several days prior
because I am a New Yorker and I need some
time to catch up with my family and some friends,
hopefully. I will already be in the New York spirit
and the New York state of mind, and I am going to
knock your socks off.
I KNOW WHERE I’M GOING NEW YEAR’S
EVE!
New Year’s Eve is such a special time of year,
where almost anything goes. You are ready to
restart your next chapter in life within 24 hours
of December 31 and as Prince said, “Let’s party
like it’s 1999”… You’re going to have all kinds
of people surrounded by reflective feelings, and
with the knowledge of that, it just allows me to
