Wine and Beer and Moonshine, Oh My! 

As you are learning, Excelsior Springs really is full of many things to do and see. Over the last 

decade, the town has been on the fast track to becoming a premiere getaway for adults looking for a 

weekend of rest, relaxation and... libations. 

Whether you’re a craft beer connoisseur, a wandering wineaux, mad about moonshine - or 

everything in between - you’ll want to plan to really drink in and savor your trip to Excelsior Springs! 

Going Where The Water Tastes Like Wine 

Ok, the water doesn’t taste like wine - but you’re going to want to drink the wine like it’s water. 

Excelsior Springs may have a history steeped in the folklore of the area’s magical healing waters, 

but the future is in the wine. 

There are multiple local wineries, each showcasing its own delicious wines in unique locations with 

great offerings. To immerse yourself in the full wineaux experience, plan a trip to one (or all!) of the 

following locations:

• Fence Stile Vineyards , Winery & Distillery: Located at 31010 W. 124th St., Fence Stile 

is the only winery in the region with a wine cave. Highlights include wine and spirit tastings, special 

tours and tasting events, outdoor patio, outdoor firepits, adopt-a-vine program, food, and event 

space. In 2021, its selection expanded to include small batch rum. If you are feeling particularly 

romantic, Fence Stile is also home to the “Love Lock Wall,” a place where loved-up couples can 

“lock in” their love with a special padlock. 

• Four Horses and A Dog: Have you ever been daydreaming with your friends about turning 

a passion into something bigger? That exact scenario led to the development of Four Horses and a 

Dog Vineyard & Winery. Two couples opened Four Horses in 2008, and have shown no sign of 

slowing down since. Located at 15010 Salem Road, Four Horses and A Dog offers its own wine, 

focusing on the production of semi-dry to dry wines. There are also sweet offerings, along with a

variety of craft beers, hard ciders and sangria. Pair your selection with a picnic 

pack, or even bring your own spread to enjoy. Four Horses and a Dog will be 

open through March 2023, and from then, its delectable Missouri wines can be 

found at Shamrock Hills Vineyard & Winery. 

• Shamrock Hills Vineyard & Winery: Opening April 2023, Shamrock 

Hills Vineyard & Winery will be taking over production of the wine currently 

found at Four Horses and a Dog. The same great wine will be rebranded under 

the Shamrock Hills name as the new owners begin to grow their own acres of 

grapes. Their beautiful land will create a scenic backdrop for tastings, live music 

and more. Shamrock Hills is located at 12300 Shoemaker Road. 

• Van Till Family Farm Winery: Amid a beautiful country backdrop at 

13986 Hwy C, Rayville, you’ll find Van Till Family Farm Winery. This familyowned 

and operated winery includes a wine room, wine garden, wine club, full 

table service, and frequent events. On Friday and Saturday nights, Van Till offers 

delectable wood-fired oven pizzas - made with ingredients grown on site. 

Don’t worry - the wine doesn’t stop flowing there. Visit one of the following 

locations, specializing in wine, to enjoy even more of the good stuff. 

• Casa Di Vite: Inside this beautifully restored historic building, Casa Di Vite 

focuses on international wines, bringing the flavors of multiple countries, such 

as Spain, Argentina, France and Italy to its glasses. Visit Casa Di Vite at 216 

Spring Street. (See more on page 50.) 

• Pairings by Van Till: Pairings by Van Till is a secondary location of Van Till 

Family Farm Winery, situated in historic downtown Excelsior Springs at 415 S. 

Thompson Avenue. Pairings serves unique and tasty charcuterie boards paired 

with its very own wine, along with other menu items, like sandwiches and baked 

brie. Board choices range from traditional to seasonal and even dessert - imagine 

a board filled with cookies, ice cream, fruit and nuts... yum! 

• Willow Spring Mercantile: A local favorite, Willow Spring Mercantile is 

home to the state’s largest selection of Missouri wines, craft beers and distilled 

spirits. Enjoy tastings, pair wine with its delicious freshly-made bistro food, or sign 

up for one of its regular four-course wine meals. Willow Spring can be found at 

249 E. Broadway in Downtown Excelsior Springs. 

• Wine & Shine Tasting Room: Enjoy tasting (and taking home) unique 

wines from Florida Orange Groves Winery. There are over 30 flavors to 

choose from, ranging from orange coffee to tomato wine. Wine & Shine Tasting 

Room also offers a great selection of retail, boba teas, moonshine and more.

Save Water, Drink Beer 

Will we ever run out of water and libation references? Only time will tell! After 

a day of wandering our wineries, maybe it’s time to stop for a sip of locally brewed 

beer. 

• The Atlas: The Atlas Saloon & Brewery has resided at its corner location in one 

form or another since 1894! This historic building is now a popular late night spot in 

Excelsior Springs. The brewery takes inspiration from the famous water of Excelsior 

Springs to brew German beers of old. Its beers are named for the 29 mineral 

springs that once brought people to Excelsior Springs from all over the world. The 

Atlas is located at 100 W. Broadway Ave. (See more on page 18.) 

• Dubious Claims Brewing Co: Housed in brick and industrial style decor, 

Dubious Claims Brewing Co. is home to over 12 craft beers brewed in-house. 

From the bar, you can look into the brew house to see the giant machines (named 

after members of Van Halen) that brought you that delicious beer you’re drinking.

Many other establishments carry a variety of domestic and craft beers to enjoy. 

Beer is a feature at most Excelsior Springs festivals, typically in the form of a beer 

garden. New in 2022, we paired a special Home Brew contest with our Annual 

BBQ & Fly-In on the River Competition, allowing home brewers to enter their 

creations, and bystanders to taste. 

Drinkin’ Whiskey Like It’s Water 

When you’re ready to level up, there are numerous options to find spirits 

in Excelsior Springs - and we don’t mean the paranomal kind (although 

some say we have those, too!). 

From locally-made liquor to exotic moonshine, the choices are plenty! 

• Of The Earth Distillery: A short - but worth it - drive from Excelsior 

Springs, Of the Earth Farm Distillery creates and carries delicious small 

batch craft spirits. Every spirit produced is mashed, fermented, and distilled 

by the Of The Earth Farm Distillery team using ingredients from their own 

farm and other local farmers. Try it out at 17190 Hwy 13 in Richmond. 

• Fence Stile Vineyards, Winery & Distillery: Fence Stile has 

broaded its selection to now include spirits! Using innovative techniques, 

Nyx Spirits are bottled with the same ABV at which they are aged, creating 

a stronger flavor and more alcohol content than a normal liquor. Try these 

rums at 31010 W. 124th St. 

Wine & Shine Tasting Room: My, oh, my - it’s moonshine time! 

Amongst their other tasting offerings, Wine & Shine Tasting Room at 109 

E. Broadway also offers samples of Sugarland Moonshine and Ole Smoky 

Moonshine. Find your favorite and grab some to take home with you! 

Nothing Dubious About This Downtown Brewery 

In the early-to-mid 1900s, Excelsior Springs became America’s “Haven of Health.” 

Boasting 46 mineral water springs and five different varieties of water, each with unique 

supposed healing properties, Excelsior was a wonder destination to the ill. Mineral water 

pavilions and bath houses soon gave way to the big business of health sanitariums. These 

facilities thrived until a national media exposure of “dubious claims” dried up the mineral 

water business. While the health benefits of the area’s mineral waters may be questionable, 

you can let the beer at Dubious Claims Brewing Co. be the cure for whatever “ales” you. 

Established in 2018, Dubious Claims Brewing Co. is a craft brewery opened by Neil 

Wilkerson. After “Neighbor Neil” became a bit of a neighborhood celebrity by brewing 

his own beer, he decided to take it to the next level by opening his own place right here in 

Downtown Excelsior Springs. 

With over a dozen beers made right in house in the state of the art brew house and a 

complementary menu filled with pizza and pub-style appetiziers, every palate is sure to be 

pleased. 

If you’re a fan of the beer (and oh, you will be), you can even take some home with you - 

beer can be canned at the bar and glass growlers are available to fill with your favorites. The 

most popular beer is the Bathhouse Blueberry Wheat, but there is a large variety, from light 

to dark, to suit any preference. Seasonally, you will find DCBC’s hard apple cider, made 

from fresh apples from local orchards, or Mango Town, a spin on the classic E-Town Ale, 

perfect for sipping outside on the back patio on a warm summer night. 

Dubious Claims has two spaces perfect for your event, and often hosts wedding 

rehearsal dinners, reunions, birthday parties, company gatherings and more. New in 

2022, Neil’s Holiday Room turned one of those spaces into a brightly lit festive pop-up 

room, complete with an exclusive holiday cocktail menu and fun photo backdrops. 

Dubious Claims is also highly involved and invested in the local community, present at 

most events with its beer tent, hosting local fundraisers or even entering its specially-built 

@dree_15 

beer bike in the local parades. 

Throughout the year, you can find fun at DCBC through speed quiz trivia, bingo, an adult 

Easter egg hunt, and many other events - be sure to follow on social media for information.

Dubious Claims - we’ll save you a seat!

Same Great Wines With New Beginnings 

This story began back in 2008 when friends (Jeanine & Stephen Stubbs and 

Michael & Cheryl Jennings) agreed to try their hand at planting grapes to make 

wine for personal use. Over the next few years, numerous additional vines were 

planted until what began as a hobby gradually morphed into the business venture of 

Four Horses and a Dog Vineyard and Winery. The tasting room opened its doors 

on April 1, 2015, offering a small selection of mostly dry wines. Over the next few 

years, additional wines were added to include a wider range of styles ranging from 

sweet to dry. As the wine selections grew, so did the customer volume resulting in 

three tasting room expansions over the course of five years. 

By 2020, Four Horses and a Dog Vineyard & Winery was rated the number 

one thing to do in Excelsior Springs by TripAdvisor. The uniqueness of this winery 

doesn’t just come from the comfortable and friendly atmosphere, it also comes from 

the focus on drier wines, which is a unique spin for Missouri grown grapes, but one 

that proved to be very popular with the customers. As the growth has continued, the 

friends determined it was time for the winery to find a new location. 

Mike and Denise Riley, owners of Shamrock Ranch and wine lovers themselves, 

had made the choice to add grapes to their property, just fifteen minutes from Four 

Horses and a Dog, but hadn’t ever envisioned owning a winery. They have spent 

time in many Oregon wineries, and have always loved the Midwestern atmosphere 

and vibe of those properties. When they joined the Excelsior Springs community, 

they decided to attend a trolley wine tour and learn about the local wineries. When 

they arrived at Four Horses and a Dog, they realized they had found that same 

feeling right here at home. 

Since Mike and Denise knew they wanted to put grapes in the ground, and 

they were attracted to the Four Horses atmosphere, they solicited growing advice 

from Mike and Stephen and the rest is history. That’s the moment the stars 

aligned, and everyone knew it was a match made in heaven. 

The Rileys look forward to embracing the 

friendly and welcoming atmosphere so carefully 

curated by Four Horses and a Dog where 

guests become friends and everlasting 

memories are made at the new wine venue, 

Shamrock Hills. But the Rileys’ plans do not stop 

there. They plan to continue the growth of the 

winery. For the next several years, the grapes at 

Four Horses and a Dog will continue to be used 

as the Rileys plant their own vines. In 2023, 

four acres will be planted, including Crimson 

Cabernet, Cabernet Dore, St. Vincent and 

Zinthiana. In 2024, two more acres will house 

grapes of the Traminette and Chambourcin varietal. 

The Stubbses, Jenningses, and Rileys are so 

happy for one another and look forward to their 

friendship continuing. Grab a glass at Four Horses and a 

Dog Vineyard & Winery through March 30, 2023 and after 

that at Shamrock Hills Vineyard and Winery at 12300 Shoemaker 

Road, where you can enjoy the same delicious wines in a new tasting room with 

a new beautiful scenic landscape.

The Atlas Saloon Brews From History 

The Atlas Saloon & Brewery was built by Joseph Schlitz Co. and opened in 1894. At that 

time, Broadway was just a dirt road with wagon wheel ruts. The bank was across the street, where 

you will now find the Excelsior Springs Museum and Archives. 

Cut to present day. Jim McCullough bought the Atlas, and restored the building to 

resemble an old time saloon. When you walk through the front doors you might say to yourself, 

“Now THIS is a saloon.” 

In 2018, the Atlas expanded into the beer brewing business. A brew house was added 

in the old back office, which includes three fermenters and a brite tank. The Atlas specializes in 

German lagers, using noble hops and barleys from Weyermann’s malting house in Germany. 

At any time, you can find four or five lagers on tap, each unique in its own way. To name a few: 

• Atlas Brew is created with the old Schlitz recipe from the 1800s. 

• Munich Helles is the oldest beer in the world, first brewed by the monks of Munich. 

• Grains for Irish Stout are from the Malting Company of Ireland. 

• Scottish Ale - Its highest rated beer on Untappd - has 10 types of grains with many flavors 

on the palate and tongue. 

Behind the bar, mixologists - and craft beer queens - Cheyenne, Terri and Melissa are ready 

to both serve you and educate you on the craft beers. Beers at the Atlas Saloon, brewed by 

brewmaster Keith Hudson, can be served by the pint, or you can try them all by getting a flight! 

In addition to the 9 beers brewed in house, the Atlas also has a full bar ready to accommodate 

any thirst. For wine lovers, you can find wine from local winery Four Horses and a Dog. If you are 

looking for a spicy way to start your day, try an Atlas Bloody Mary which has placed in multiple 

local contests. 

During football season, the Atlas is the place to be if you’re looking for a Chiefs bar. Every 

game becomes an event with plenty of tailgate food and, of course, drinks. Red and yellow rally 

shots are handed out to help lead the Chiefs to victory, and the playoffs are an extra special 

time to visit. 

The Atlas Saloon & Brewery has been serving beer since 1894, and is thrilled to be carrying 

on that tradition in Excelsior Springs. Guests are invited to take a step back in time while they 

hang out with friends, play pool, darts, shuffleboard and other games, as well as peruse the back 

room that displays striking photos of Excelsior Springs history. 

The owners at the Atlas Saloon & Brewery are often asked if they distribute their beer, as 

guests have been known to travel hundreds of miles to try them or get another taste. But the only 

way to get delicious Atlas beer is to buy it right here in Excelsior Springs!

Take A Little Road Trip To This Hidden Gem 

Of The Earth Farm & Distillery is located just north of 

Richmond, in the gently rolling hills of Ray County. 

In 2010, Of The Earth Farm decided to improve upon 

its seven acres of tree fruit by offering a value-added 

product: Apple Brandy. This flagship product has led to the 

creation of more than a dozen premium spirits and liqueurs. 

Year-round products like Rye Whiskey, Blackberry Liqueur, 

Gin No. 1, Pommeau and Grappa are joined by seasonal, 

small-batch spirits like Winter Gin and Rye Eau de Vie. 

All of the distillery offerings can be sampled each 

weekend (April – December) in the Tasting Room on the 

farm. The Tasting Room also offers a seasonal selection of 

cocktails, adult slushies and food. Special events with live 

music and entertainment are a monthly highlight. Guests 

can enjoy sipping cocktails on the patio while watching the 

sheep flock graze in the pasture nearby. 

Of The Earth Farm & Distillery Tasting Room is open 

January – March by appointment and April – December:

2002 by two sisters, Jill Rickart and Wendy 

Baldwin, who had a vision and saw potential for a

tin ceilings, and wooden floors exude ambiance 

and make the customer’s dining experience all

boiled shrimp on Tuesday nights, along with 

other specials throughout the week. Ventana 

offers homemade desserts and is well known 

for its abundance of cheesecake flavors, which 

customers ardently adore.

cocktails. The Ventana Vacation - a delightful 

coconut drink - is very popular, so be sure to give

At Sturm Bros.’ Custom 

Design and Fine Jewelry, 

visitors shop their uniquely 

curated collection of fine jewelry 

pieces in a range of precious 

metals and genuine stones or 

design a custom jewelry piece. 

The Sturm Bros.’ showroom is 

an open workspace designed 

to give clients access to the entire 

jewelry creation process, from designing 

to casting to stone setting. Customers can 

view each step and have their questions 

answered along the way, making memories 

and jewelry simultaneously. 

The Sturm brothers, Jordan and Joseph, 

grew up in the jewelry industry. They each 

developed a love for jewelry and decided 

to open Sturm Brothers’ Custom Design & 

Fine Jewelry in 2017. Jordan is a graduate 

of the New Approach School for Jewelers 

and Joseph became a CAD certified 

jewelry designer in 2019. Together with 

their mother TJ, their sister-in-law 

Libby, and Joseph’s wife Megan, 

they have created a one-of-akind 

jewelry experience for their 

customers. 

When visiting Excelsior 

Springs, you too can create a 

custom jewelry piece. Here 

is a quick walk-through of the 

Sturm Bros.’ process. It all starts 

with a visit where, together, you and a 

Sturm Bros.’ team member use the CAD 

program to build your jewelry dream. Next, 

a rendering is printed for you to take home. 

Then, the designer will make any necessary 

final adjustments to prepare a file for the 3D 

printing of a plastic model of the jewelry. 

Some clients wish to return and try on their 

3D model before the jeweler makes a mold 

and casts the piece in the desired metal. For 

the last steps, the jeweler sets any stones 

and polishes up the custom creation. The 

new design is then ready to be picked up

The beauty and artistry in Excelsior Springs is not hard to find - in fact, it’s literally built into the bones of its oldest buildings and structures. The Hall of Waters, which includes the world’s longest water bar 

(re-opening later in 2023), is a stunning and unique art-deco and depression-modern style building with more features than we can list here - you just have to see it for yourself! The Hall of Waters 

has been named one of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places, and is in the process of undergoing renovation to maintain its structural integrity. While it is not completely open to the public at 

this time, there is still plenty to take in so be sure to take a walk around the famous landmark while you’re here!

We Draw On The Walls In This Town 

We’re a town that is obsessed with our own history - and with good reason, if we do say so 

ourselves! This old-fashioned mural showcases how things used to be. 

Another homage to our history, this colorful mural graces the side of Ventana Gourmet Grill, and 

portrays an artsy timeline of the years past. 

Find this gorgeous butterfly design inside the Brooke Baxter Memorial Park on Thompson Ave.

Vintage And Vows 

Megan and Aaron grew up together in Excelsior Springs, both spreading their 

wings and flying away after graduating high school. When the two reconnected 

over 20 years later, the lovebirds chose to move back to town to establish new 

roots for their fledgling family. 

When it came time to walk down the aisle, the Hall of Waters was a no-brainer 

for the pair. 

“The Hall of Waters has always been so magical to me,” said Megan. “The Art 

Deco archtecture has always captured my imagination. I could get lost in all of the 

details inside that building forever.” 

Not only does Megan love the aesthetic of the Hall of Waters, many of her 

childhood memories were intertwined with it. 

“I participated in dance recitals on the grounds,” she explained as one of the 

many fond flashbacks, “Years ago, my parents purchased a family brick with our 

name on it, and I can still find it anytime I walk past the bench out front.” 

Megan, Aaron, their family, and their friends enjoyed a beautiful wedding 

in the venue of her dreams, and recommends anyone planning their big day to 

consider Excelsior Springs as a wedding destination. In particular, she comments 

on the scenic beauty perfect for photos and the accommodating nature of all the 

local businesses.

designs,” she throws in. “They did mine and I still receive compliments on my ring

A Beautiful Backdrop For “I Do” 

Callan and Jon travelled to Excelsior Springs from Moberly, Missouri to say “I do.” 

The couple hosted their wedding at the historic Elms Hotel and Spa, 401 Regent 

Street. 

“The Elms has a historical beauty to it that you just can’t find anymore,” said Callan. 

While The Elms is gorgeous year-round, luck would have it that it snowed just two 

days before the ceremony, blanketing the area with a magical fairy-tale like quality. 

“The snow with the woods surrounding The Elms provided such an amazing and 

beautiful backdrop for our wedding,” she continued, “Plus the small town atmosphere 

and hotel setting offered something very important to us in a dedicated space. The 

staff was amazing and so helpful.” 

The Elms provides each couple with an on-site event planner. Their night included 

the ceremony, reception, food and drink, and many guests also took advantage of 

the world-class spa. 

The night before their wedding, the duo, their families and their wedding party 

enjoyed a rehearsal dinner down the street at Dubious Claims Brewing Co., followed 

by axe throwing at WoodChux, where they were able to rent out the entire facility. 

Both of those facilities are within walking distance from The Elms in nice weather, or the 

hotel will also offer a shuttle if needed. 

“The historical beauty of this town is amazing for anyone who wants to have more 

to their venue than just the traditional beauty,” emphasized the couple, also noting the 

fascinating ghost and history tours some of their out of town guests were able to enjoy 

during their stay.

One Town, Many Memories 

Amber and Kaleb knew they wanted to get married in Excelsior Springs, 

and they made sure to use as many local vendors as they could. 

“The Downtown scenery has always been beautiful,” said Amber, “Plus 

everything we needed was close by.” 

The following locations were utilized during their big day: 

• The Montgomery, located on Thompson Ave., was the star of the 

show (second to the bride, of course), hosting both the wedding and the 

reception. 

• The Excelsior Springs Trolley provided transportation and fun photo 

opportunities. 

• Amber’s hair was done by Kerri at Excelsior’s House of Hair. 

• Excelsior Springs DJ Service, Beatz DJ, provided the music of the 

evening. 

• Prior to the wedding, Kaleb and his groomsmen walked to Dubious 

Claims Brewing Co. for a few pre-wedding drinks. 

• The ladies ventured to a local downtown coffee shop to grab coffee 

while they were getting ready. 

• The lovebirds spent the evening at The Elms Hotel and Spa.

Restored Building Brings Wine & Weddings To Downtown 

Susan Blaser and her daughter, Brittni Blaser, have 

taken their dreams and brought them to reality at 216 

Spring Street in Downtown Excelsior Springs. 

The building, once a medical facility built during the 

healing water rush of the early 1900s, has been brought 

back to life. After a complete renovation, the stone building 

highlight of downtown has now been turned into both an 

international wine cafe and a wedding event venue. 

Casa Di Vite, the wine bar, offers delicious international 

wines in an “apertivo” style experience. 

Alongside the wine, Casa Di Vite also serves bourbon, 

whiskey, and Italian beer. The space can be rented out 

privately for any of your special events. 

Speaking of special events, the second building at 216 

Spring Street has been branded Excelsior Weddings & 

Events. With the goal of offering memorable, affordable 

and all-inclusive weddings, the Weddings & Events Menu 

offers two spaces to choose from.

The Only Time We’re On Is Wine Time 

We’ve mentioned a time or two that we love our wine here 

in Excelsior Springs, so it’s no surprise that we host a popular 

annual Wine Festival. This premier destination event places 

Missouri’s wineries and its famous wines on display in the 

beautiful outdoor setting of Lovers Lane in East Valley Park. 

Whether you are an expert on all things wine, or a newbie 

who is just starting to dabble, this epic wine-tasting event will 

be perfect for anyone. 

Wine novices are able to learn more about wines and 

sample from a comprehensive selection in many varietals, 

styles and price ranges. Wine aficionados can enjoy meeting 

winemakers, asking detailed questions and acquiring Missouri 

wine selections. 

You’ll have the opportunity to sample dozens of wines 

from several different Missouri wineries, and meet with the 

owners who have made Missouri famous in the American 

wine market. You will also have the ability to experience 

Missouri made craft brews and talk directly to the brewery 

owners and brewmasters. 

Local bands will provide the background music and keep 

the festival lively while you sip and stroll through the wineries, 

breweries, food trucks and vendors at the festival. 

Tickets will go on sale online prior to the festival, with 

additional tickets available at the gate if it doesn’t sell out in 

advance. Tickets include access to the grounds for the duration 

of the festival, wine and beer samples, a souvenir glass, all day 

trolley access and the option to purchase additional wine by 

the glass, bottle or case. 

For those just interested in strolling the scene and listening 

to the music without sampling the wine, general admission 

tickets will be available for a lower price.

The Streets Shut Down, The Fun Ramps Up 

One of the largest festivals of the year, Waterfest takes place each year during 

the last weekend of June. This two-day celebration began as an homage to Excelsior 

Springs and our mineral water heritage. 

Although we’ve been known to withstand a rainstorm or two during the annual 

event, it’s actually quite low on water, but high on everything else you could think of! 

Nearly 100 booths fill Broadway from end to end, lined with vendors from far and 

wide who travel to showcase their products, apparel, crafts, snacks and more. 

Vendors Galore! 

Two main stages host live bands throughout both the days and evenings, 

complemented by other live performances. You can also find a beer garden, petting 

zoo, historical trolley tours, a quilt show, car show, contests and games. There’s even a 

parade! 

One of the most well-attended and popular local events, Waterfest, one of the 

most well-attended and popular events, is a family friend event guaranteed to leave

Remember I Reflect I Recall 

Excelsior Springs, the city with the magic waters, came to 

be as a modern dwelling in the year 1880. At the time, it 

was basically a wheat field. From the Fishing River, a spring 

water with a red coloring flowed, becoming Siloam Spring 

and the first of the mineral waters found in Excelsior Springs. 

It is the only natural supply of ferro-manganese mineral water 

in the United States and one of only five known worldwide. 

It’s also the spring that paved the way for Excelsior Springs 

to become what it is today. 

The story goes like this: A local farmer, Travis Mellion, 

was searching for help for his daughter who was suffering 

from tuberculosis. Mellion gave his daughter water from 

the spring to drink and bathe in. Within days, a drastic 

improvement in her condition was observed; in just weeks, 

she was cured. People took notice. Another story of the 

healing properties of the water comes from Civil War 

Veteran Frederick Kuglar, who decided to test the water on 

an unhealed gunshot wound. He, too, found relief and a full 

recovery from the waters. 

From there, the owners of the property platted the valley

The Water And The History Flow On 

and formed a town. Within a year’s time, 200 houses had 

settled into the hilly terrace for newcomers to call home. 

Visitors who had heard of the magic waters came in droves, 

camping in tents and covered wagons, to get their hands on 

the waters. 

After the discovery of the first water, more than 40 more 

mineral water wells and springs were identified, including 

sodium bicarbonate, calcium bicarbonate and saline 

sulphur. One of Excelsior’s claims to fame is that we have 

more groupings of mineral water than anywhere else in the 

world. IN THE ENTIRE WORLD! 

Before long, visitors from larger metropolitan areas 

caught interest in the springs. Suddenly, due to high 

demand, boarding houses and hotels were erected and 

stage lines were put into place. Excelsior continued to thrive 

with further construction and expansion, even avoiding the 

worst of the Great Depression thanks to our status as a 

health resort oasis. 

In the late 1950s, the good times took a hit as some of

Today, the springs still flow, although there is no longer 

access to them. City and community civic groups are 

currently working to restore mineral water pavilions at as 

many sites as possible. 

Our rich history helped make us what we are, but we are

with deep roots in history and a huge passion toward the 

future. We have two feet moving forward while keeping an 

eye on our past.

opening up every year, including new breweries, restaurants 

and retail space with more to come in the future.
