EXPERIENCE AN

ICONIC DESTINATION

If you’ve heard of Excelsior

Springs, you’ve likely heard of

The Elms Hotel and Spa.

Renowned for beautifully appointed

accommodations, The

Elms Hotel & Spa delivers lavish

amenities and standard-setting

service on lovely grounds in

Excelsior Springs. Throughout

its storied history, The Elms has

been frequented by celebrities,

politicians, and notorious persons

alike, earning international

fame and establishing itself as

an integral part of our Excelsior

Springs hotel history.

What sets The Elms apart

from other hotels is, of course,

its world class spa. The expansive

25,000-square-foot facility

offers a place where you can

spend your days in serenity

with pampering spa treatments

and a wide array of amenities.

Spa treatments include options

such as therapeutic massages,

cupping massages, stone and

waterfall massages, hydrotherapy,

facials and much more. A

full list of services can be found

at elmshotelandspa.com.

Before or after your services

(or both), you can relax in The

Grotto, Excelsior’s take on ancient

Roman baths. The Grotto

experience includes: Dry Sauna,

Steam Sauna, Hot Tub, Cold

Plunge Shower, Steam Shower

and an Exfoliation Bar. You can

even choose to bypass the spa

service and buy a day pass to

relax the day away in the Grotto.

While you stay at The Elms,

also be sure to dine at 88 at the

Elms, where all food is prepared

using locally sourced farm fresh

ingredients; have a drink and

pub style snack at the Tavern;

and be sure to start your morning

off with a cup of joe and

some in-house baked goodies

at the Cafe.

Your experience would not be

complete without considering a

paranormal tour, as The Elms is

one of the most famously haunted

places in Missouri. Don’t

worry, though, the ghosts - and

the staff - are always friendly,

and excited to see you!

A WORLD AWAY

FROM EVERYDAY

Innkeepers Kim and Gary

Sanson knew they had something

special when they found

the cute house that would become

The Sunny Side Cottage.

They took their love and passion

for restoring historic homes

and poured it into creating this

home into the beautiful bed and

breakfast that it is today.

The Sunny Side Cottage is

gorgeous, charming, and freshly

renovated. Nestled in the

heart of Excelsior Springs, this

home comfortably sleeps up to

six for a perfect weekend getaway

with friends and family, or

a romantic getaway for just two!

Guest after guest finds that

the personal touches create an

ambiance of ideal comfort and

coziness that truly makes the

Sunny Side Cottage a perfect

home away from home.

The Cottage is situated in a

convenient location, right up the

hill from the historic Downtown

District, but also on the way to

the West side of town, where

additional dining and activities

await.

When you stay at the Cottage,

you are renting the entire

house and have access to a fully

equipped kitchen, luxury linens,

HDTVs with cable, free WiFi

and more. Freshly baked cookies

will be waiting for you upon

your arrival (who doesn’t love

that?!) and a continental breakfast

of baked goods, waffles,

juice, coffee and snacks will be

provided.

If part of your visit to Excelsior

Springs includes a Trolley Wine

Tour (and of course, it absolutely

should!), it will even pick you

up right at the door.

If you’re looking for a place to

stay that feels like you never left

home, be sure to come over to

the Sunny Side!

“We had a wonderful time celebrating our

anniversary here! Kim & Gary’s place was perfect,

clean, had everything you would need and much

more! They had such nice touches like providing

us a sweet chocolate cake to celebrate. They were

great at communicating and definitely went above

and beyond for us! We will definitely be back!

Cannot recommend this place highly enough!”

GEM OF A JEWELRY STORE GOES BEHIND

THE SCENES OF ITS CUSTOM WORK

Have you ever taken a moment to really

look at a piece of jewelry, the intricacies

and the details, and wondered how it came

to be? At Sturm Brothers’ Custom Design &

Fine Jewelry, you don’t have to wonder - you

can watch! Located at 111 E. Broadway, this

gem of a jewelry store not only offers display

cases full of beautiful ready to purchase

pieces, they also design custom jewelry that

they make right there at the store, and you

can watch the magic happen. When setting

up their new open concept showroom they

wanted to give customers a front row seat

to the jewelry making process. The staff are

always happy to answer questions and talk

through the process to any spectators as the

jeweler meticulously crafts the next wearable

piece of art.

Beyond their specialized custom work,

they also offer jewelry repair, personalized

consultations, gift wrapping and online

shopping. If you’re looking for a one of a

kind Excelsior Springs souvenir, the Sturm

Brothers’ have created a custom line of jewelry

using the unique Mayan figure imagery from

the Hall of Waters as inspiration.

It’s not often you can come to visit a

town for a three day trip and leave with a

piece of custom designed jewelry, but that

is exactly what Sturm Brothers’ can do for

you. Stop in on a Friday and design your

perfect new adornment - in most cases

it will be ready to pick up before you leave

town on Monday. For more elaborate pieces,

shipping is of course available. If you want

to peek in on the process throughout your

time shopping downtown, you are welcome

- and encouraged - to do so. Ask questions,

get engaged and enjoy the jewelry making

process. You’ll be able to proudly wear your

new piece and tell everyone you know that

you helped design it. How many people can

say that?

After you leave town, you can continue

to follow Sturm Brothers’ on Facebook,

Instagram, or YouTube to keep up to date

on their custom work and follow along on

their journey as they share with the world

a fascinating look behind the scenes of a

jeweler’s bench.

YOU CAN’T LOSE WHEN

YOU’RE SHOPPING

AT GRACE WINS

If you love all things home decor, you’ll definitely want to make your way

down to Grace Wins, located at 118 E. Broadway in the Historic Downtown

District.

Grace Wins opened in 2020 after owner Kristin Anderson and her family

breathed new life into the building, with a complete top to bottom, interior

to exterior renovation. The once deserted storefront now stands proudly as

one your eye will immediately be drawn to, with a fresh façade and huge

display windows giving a peek into the gorgeous merchandise beyond the

front doors.

Inside, the store is full of home decor pieces, candles, linens and much

more. The concept of Grace Wins was born out of Kristin’s personal passion

and love for decorating and styling her home. She wanted to take her minimalist,

less-is-more vibe and bring it to life in a way in which others could

be inspired - being able to do so right in the heart of her hometown was just

icing on the tastefully decorated cake.

While the idea behind the style at Grace Wins might be “less is more,”

there is definitely a lot to choose from. Whether you are looking for a small

statement piece, a gift option, or hoping to redecorate an entire room, when

you’re shopping at 118 E. Broadway, everyone wins.

The epic building renovation also includes an

upstairs renovation that is now a 5 bedroom

AirBnB named “ The Loft at Grace Wins,” that

is available to rent.

YOU KNOW ABOUT OUR WATER - DID YOU KNOW ABOUT OUR BEER?

Make Downtown Excelsior Springs your new destination

for craft beer sampling. The little craft beer haven

that could, we are home to two independent breweries

in our Downtown, Dubious Claims Brewing Co.,

located at 451 S. Thompson Ave. (see page 32) and

The Atlas Saloon & Brewery, located at 100 W. Broadway.

There is also a large variety of craft and domestic

beers available throughout our restaurants and bars,

giving any beer lover plenty of options to quench their

thirst.

While sitting and enjoying a cold one at the bar is always

a great time, be sure to keep your eye out for the

several events hosted throughout the year that highlight

the high quality adult beverages, and are always

a great time!

there, too! Broadway Bar & Grill has opened a

brand new tasting room that offers wine and moonshine

Online ordering with curbside pickup available - get your food and beer to go!

FORGET ABOUT THE WATER,

JUST DRINK THE BEER

In the early-to-mid 1900s, Excelsior

Springs became America’s “Haven of

Health.” Boasting 46 mineral water springs

and five different varieties of water, each

with unique supposed healing properties,

Excelsior was a wonder working destination

to the ill. Mineral water pavilions

and bath houses soon gave way to the

big business of health sanitariums. These

facilities thrived until a national media

expose of “dubious claims” dried up the

mineral water business. While the health

benefits of the area’s mineral waters may

have dried up, you can now let the beer at

Dubious Claims Brewing Co. be the cure

for whatever “ales” you.

Established in 2018, Dubious Claims

Brewing Co. is a craft brewery opened

by Neil Wilkerson. After “Neighbor Neil”

became a bit of a neighborhood celebrity

by brewing his own beer, he decided

to take it to the next level by opening his

own place right here in downtown Excelsior

Springs.

With over a dozen beers made right in

house in the state of the art brew house

and a complementary menu filled with

pizza, sandwiches and a delightful beer

cheese macaroni and cheese, every palate

is sure to be pleased.

If you’re a fan of the beer (oh, you will

be), you can even take some home with

you - beer can be canned at the bar and

glass growlers are available to fill with

your favorites. The most popular beer

is the Bathhouse Blueberry Wheat, but

there is a large variety, from light to dark,

to suit any preference. Seasonally, you will

find DCBC’s hard apple cider, made from

fresh apples from local orchards, or Mango

Town, a spin on the classic E-Town Ale,

perfect for sipping outside on the back

patio on a warm summer night.

Dubious Claims has two spaces perfect

for your event, and often hosts wedding

rehearsal dinners, reunions, birthday parties,

company gatherings and more.

Dubious Claims is also highly involved

and invested in the local community, and

has hosted several events that raised over

$90,000 to give back to local programs,

with plans for many more in the future.

If you’re looking for a friendly face, a

good meal, and a cold drink, make sure

to stop by Dubious Claims - we’ll save you

a seat!

Travel Tip: The Elms has a “ Stay and

Play” package that includes fun at

WoodChux & DCBC

FAMILY FRIENDLY FUN AT

WOODCHUX AXE THROWING

Right next door to Dubious Claims Brewing

Co., you’ll find Downtown Excelsior

Springs’ newest recreational activity, Wood-

Chux Axe Throwing.

WoodChux first opened in Liberty, Missouri

after a group of friends and neighbors

decided that the Northland needed such a

venue, and that they were just the guys to

make it happen. That casual conversation

quickly became a dream, which quickly became

a reality. After cementing themselves

as the only axe-throwing locale in the Northland,

and a popular activity among all age

groups, the idea of expansion came quickly

and easily.

That expansion brought them to Thompson

Ave in Excelsior Springs. In addition to

the close proximity in location, WoodChux

also serves Dubious Claims food and beer.

Along with several axe throwing lanes,

there are other games available, combining

to give people of every age group a unique

opportunity to have fun outside the box of

the conventional.

Guests can use the typical axes, or try

their hand at throwing spears or ninja stars.

If you have a large group, there are multilane

discounts available, or options for

renting out the entire establishment (hello,

“Celebrated my brother’s 25th birthday

at the Excelsior WoodChux location!

It was easy to reserve lanes online and

we were able to bring our own cake and

ice cream. We also ordered pizza and

beer fromDubious Claims next door and

had it brought to us - so cool!

Highly recommend for parties or a fun

evening with friends.”

bachelor party!). Their convenient mobile

unit can even bring an entire axe lane to

your own party, and includes all set up and

training.

Whether you are on the lookout for some

friendly date-night competition, an adventurous

night out with pals, or a family-friendly

night of fun, WoodChux is sure to aXe all

History

PLENTY FOR A

BUFF

In Excelsior Springs, we take

great pride in our historic resources.

There are so many incredible stories

surrounding the discovery of our

mineral waters. We are proud of

the one-of-a-kind Hall of Waters,

recognized as an American treasure,

and The Elms Hotel and Spa.

Our entire downtown is one of

our three National Register historic

districts, and features unique places

to shop, eat and stay overnight.

We have a challenging historic

golf course and are minutes away

from Watkins Mill State Historic Park

and State Historic Site and the Jesse

James Farm.

Keep reading to learn more about

our rich history.

46

IT STARTED WITH THE WATER, BUT THE PROGRESS KEEPS FLOWING

Excelsior Springs, the city with the

magic waters, came to be as a modern

dwelling in the year 1880. At the time,

it was basically a wheat field. From the

Fishing River, a spring water with a red

coloring flowed, becoming Siloam Spring

and the first of the mineral waters found

in Excelsior Springs. It is the only natural

supply of ferro-manganese mineral water

in the United States and one of only five

known worldwide. It’s also the spring that

paved the way for Excelsior Springs to

become what it is today.

The story goes like this: A local farmer,

Travis Mellion, was searching for help

for his daughter who was suffering from

tuberculosis. Mellion gave his daughter

water from the spring to drink and bathe

in. Within days, a drastic improvement

in her condition was observed; in just

weeks, she was cured. People took notice.

Another story of the healing properties of

the water comes from Civil War Veteran

Frederick Kuglar, who decided to test the

water on an unhealed gunshot wound. He,

too, found relief and a full recovery from

the waters.

From there, the owners of the property

platted the valley and formed a town.

Within a year’s time, 200 houses had

settled into the hilly terrace for newcomers

to call home. Visitors who had heard of the

magic waters came in droves, camping

in tents and covered wagons, to get their

hands on the waters.

After the discovery of the first water,

more than 40 more mineral water wells

and springs were identified, including

sodium bicarbonate, calcium bicarbonate

and saline sulphur. One of Excelsior’s

claims to fame is that we have more

groupings of mineral water than anywhere

else in the world. You read that correctly -

in the entire world!

Before long, visitors from larger

metropolitan areas caught interest in the

springs. Suddenly, due to high demand,

boarding houses and hotels were erected

and stage lines were put into place.

Excelsior continued to thrive with further

construction and expansion, even avoiding

the worst of the Great Depression thanks

to our status as a health resort oasis.

In the late 1950s, the good times took

a hit as some of the health benefits were

questioned and popularity of resort spa

towns declined.

Today, the springs still flow, although

access to them has diminished. City and

community civic groups are currently

working to restore mineral water pavilions

at as many sites as possible.

Our rich history helped make us what

we are, but we are even more than our

water. We have created a community with

deep roots in history and a huge passion

toward the future. We have two feet

moving forward while keeping an eye on

our past.

Our tourism industry is booming and

new businesses are opening up every

year, including new breweries, restaurants

and retail space with more to come in the

future.

We pride ourselves on being a unique,

charming town rich in history, culture and

forward momentum. We welcome you to

our town and hope you enjoy your time

here!

If you’d like to learn more about our

history, you can read about it at www.

VisitExcelsior.com or even better, learn

about it in person at the Excelsior Springs

Museum and the Hall of Waters.

UPSCALE DINING IN A CASUAL ATMOSPHERE

19 years ago, sisters Wendy Baldwin

and Jill Rickart decided to take a

chance on a new business venture in

downtown Excelsior Springs. At the

time, the downtown was a shell of what

it is today, but the sisters saw potential

for growth that they could be a part of

and help spearhead.

Their restaurant, Ventana Gourmet

Grill, came to life in February 2002,

offering a casual yet upscale dining

experience that was previously lacking

in this small town. Their corner building

is a sight to behold, with historically

ornate ceilings, original wood floors

and brick walls full of the antique

charm that Excelsior Springs has come

to be known for.

The menu is eclectic, with choices

for every preference, from pasta to

award-winning steaks, and everything

in between. On any one table you

might find a Caesar salad with a cup

of lobster bisque soup, a bowl of New

Orleans Cajun pasta with a side of

Parmesan pita bread, and a prime rib

with zucchini and a baked potato. If it’s

a Tuesday night, you might even find

an order of their all you can eat shrimp.

Along with their gourmet entree

choices, Ventana boasts an extensive

wine list, beer and spirits, and is famous

“ Arainy day in Excelsior Springs called

for comfort food. We found it at Ventana

Gourmet Grill. Crunchy Parmesan grilled

cheese sandwich with chips, pickle and a

cup of tomato basil soup. Excellent, unique

taste to an all-time classic meal.

Friendly (masked) staff, quick service,

very satisfied. I’d do it again! Oh, and the

atmosphere. Great old restored building.

Fromthe wood floors, exposed brick walls,

heavy woodwork and nice, original tin

ceiling, the place just delights the senses.”

-J.L. Schmidt, Google Review

for their homemade cheesecake.

Their forward thinking momentum

has led to multiple expansions over

the years. With the growing need to

accommodate larger groups, such as

wedding or retirement parties, they

expanded their business to include

what they affectionately call “ The O.R.,”

also just known as “the other room.” In

2018, they expanded again, opening a

bakery right next door called “ Ventana

Sweet Kneads” to satisfy the needs of

those with a sweet tooth. Along with

delicious homemade sweets, including

gluten free options, guests can find

many fun novelty items to shop from

like old-fashioned candy, cheeky

kitchen decor, tea tins and much more.

2020 brought a beautiful new

website, that shows the full menu,

gives information on daily specials and

makes ordering carry-out easy as pie

(we mean cheesecake!).

If you’re in the mood for high

quality food brought to you by

friendly faces, please be sure to visit

Ventana Gourmet Grill, located at 117

W. Broadway. Their menu is available

at www.ventanagourmetgrill.com. If

you would like more information on

hosting a party in their event space,

please contact 816-630-8600.

We love a good

time here in Excelsior

Springs, and that

typically includes all

kinds of exciting events,

like festivals and big

gatherings. As we all

know, 2020 threw that

for a bit of a loop. We

learned though that we

are able to adapt and still

have fun, even if it looks

different than what

we are used to.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS

START OF YEAR / SPRING

A lot of our events for

2020 were unfortunately

postponed or cancelled,

but as we don’t know

what the future holds,

we are moving forward

with tentative plans to

continue with our normal

events in 2021. As we’ve

also learned, change

comes swiftly and with

no regard to our plans,

so all events are subject

to change. However, all

of our local businesses

have spent the past

year cultivating safe

practices to continue to

stay open and continue

to provide services in a

safe and healthy manner,

so even if our events get

cancelled, your trip to

Excelsior Springs can

still be amazing!

Please be advised that

we do follow all Clay

County, Missouri health

protocols in regards

to social distancing,

mask requirements and

capacity requirements,

so those must be

considered at the time of

each event as well.

Make sure to follow

AND THERE’S MORE WHERE THAT CAME FROM!

Excelsior Springs is bursting with talent, and when times are normal, there

are always ample opportunities to witness its magic. The Slightly Off Broadway

Theatre, a local community theatre group, performs a full year of shows, ranging

from comedies to dramas to musicals. Their schedule and ticket information can be

found at sobtheatre.org.

Live music is a centerpoint of most of our festivals and events, with several

individual businesses hosting their own bands and musicians. When capacity

limits allow, Wabash BBQ hosts a blue garden each summer from May-September,

showcasing local blues and rock acts on their outdoor stage as the scent of freshly

smoked BBQ wafts through the air.

Over the last decade, Excelsior Springs has also become a bit of a haven for

artists. The unique architecture, historical components and picturesque landscape

are an inspiration for anyone with a creative mind.

The Historic Downtown District is now home to several art galleries, studios and

shops. The downtown itself is adorned with beautiful, handpainted murals covering

multiple building sides, making a walk down the street feel like stepping into a

vintage postcard.

The second weekend of every month, downtown stays open late for Second

Weekend Art Crawls, where shops and studios bring in featured artists and

musicians to entertain guests for the evening. Featured artists sometimes even

provide demonstrations.

Between the galleries, local artwork on display and for sale, and unique Mayaninspired

architecture of buildings such as the Hall of Waters, every little thing about

Excelsior Springs has an artistic touch to it.

IT’S ALL ABOUT MAKING

THOSE DREAMS COME TRUE

Melinda Humphrey has

been a real estate agent now

for almost 20 years, but it

never gets old. What drew her

to this career, and what continues

to keep her excited by

it, is the idea of helping people’s

dreams come true.

A home is such a big part

of anyone’s life, the backdrop

of a million tiny and huge moments

that make up the entirety

of their story, and making

sure they find the perfect

fit is not a job she takes lightly.

Melinda has lived in the Excelsior

Springs area since the

late 90s, having moved from

Oak Grove, so she’s very familiar

with not only this area

but many areas around Missouri.

If you are looking for a

new home, or to sell your current

home, she can help you

find your way.

Melinda has a large family,

and therefore has a long

background in different personality

types, preferences

and needs, which is just part

of what makes her such a

great agent. Cultivating relationships

with her clients

not only helps them find their

perfect home, but they become

lifelong friends, one of

Melinda’s favorite perks of the

job.

Excelsior Springs is a growing

town, full of new homes

being built, new school district

buildings, new businesses

opening all the time, and

hopefully wonderful new residents

just like you.

If you are curious about

the current Excelsior Springs

housing market, ready to start

looking for your forever home,

or even an investment property,

consider giving Melinda

Humphrey a call.

One thing is for sure - you’ll always

remember Kenny Manley!

Quick with a smile and a witty

sense of humor, Kenny with the

Manley Home Team will make

sure you know his name. If you

aside, Kenny’s friendly personality

makes him an amazing real

estate agent, and someone you

want to get to know.

Kansas, Kenny has just been in

the real estate game for a handful

of years, but he’s gone all

agents in the state of Missouri

each quarter.

Outside of his love of real estate,

Kenny loves to spend time

with his family, that includes wife

Ember, son Ryker and daughters

on the local Board of Education,

and volunteering with several

other local organizations.

finding what you’re looking for,

on a specific home or land and

don’t see it on the market, don’t

“Kimis great. At the time when we were trying to find a home the market was very hot.

Every time we found a home there were 3 to 5 people that were bidding on the same

home. Things were looking very bleak. She kept telling us that the right one would come

along. And the right one did come along and she went after it . It’s like she knewthat it

was the right house for us before we knew. She was very aggressive and got it for us.

She knewexactly what she was doing. She’s the best. Very smart and the best in real

estate. I don’t knowwhy anyone would not call Kimwhen they are buying or selling a

home. She cares about people and we think she’s great” - John &Carol, Web Review

NEW BEGINNINGS START

WITH KIM MCELWEE SANSON

Are you ready for a new beginning?

Look no further than

Kim McElwee Sanson. An agent

with Re/Max Area Real Estate,

real estate is in her blood. Her

father opened the office in the

80s, and her son continues the

tradition as the current office

broker as of 2019.

An ultimate champion of Excelsior

Springs, Kim and her

husband, Gary, spend the majority

of their professional and

free time immersed in all things

Excelsior Springs. They are involved

in many boards, organizations

and clubs, and have

personally invested in many

renovation projects, in both financial

and sweat equity. You

have already read about many

of their projects, including their

bed and breakfast - The Sunny

Side Cottage - and the historic

building they renovated from

the ground up, that is now home

to the store called Bliss.

But her roots began in the

real estate world, and she loves

to help others plant their own

roots right here in her beloved

home town. One of Kim’s specialties

is looking at a home,

or building, that someone else

might not know what to do with,

and being able to see its true

potential. She will regularly provide

clients with a laundry list of

simple, and affordable, ways to

bring the property up to market

ready, and then she gets it sold.

If you are ready to find your

own new beginning, whether

that be a new home, or a piece

of commercial property you

have your heart set on, Kim is

your gal. She knows the ins and

outs of this town like the back

of her hand, because it’s just a

part of who she is.

Kim can be reached by phone

call or text at 816-868-8383. Go
