DRENCHES LINCOLN

PARTS OF Lincoln were 

brought to a standstill as a 

localised thunderstorm brought 

almost two weeks of rain in 20 

minutes. 

Staff and customers at 

Rosemerryn shopping centre 

were stranded in the torrential 

downpour as the centre’s street 

frontage turned into a lake on 

Friday about 4pm. 

Firefighters were called to deal 

with flooding, mostly affecting 

Eastfield Drive and Goldney 

Close. 

Children swam in and cycled 

through the newly-created lake, 

while Lincoln Headquarters 

patrons joked the premises was 

now a waterfront bar. 

HQ part-owner Chrystal 

Boyne said the bar’s courtesy 

van fell victim to the flood, as 

water flowed into the engine 

bringing the van to a standstill 

as it entered the bar driveway on 

its return from dropping patrons 

home.

couldn’t even see in front of you 

when you were out there,” Boyne 

said. The lack of visibility forced 

motorists outside to pull over. 

“It was bizarre, just how short 

and sharp it was, and then it was 

gone.” 

About five patrons stranded as 

they waited for the floodwaters to 

subside at outdoor tables watching 

children swim and cycle in 

the almost knee-deep water. 

Neighbouring Lincoln Pantry 

staff also watched the storm 

unfold. 

Owner operator Phillippa Boa 

said one of her staff members’ 

cars had water flood through as 

it was parked on Eastfield Drive. 

It now could not be driven for 

two weeks pending a mechanical 

assessment. 

There was also loud thunder 

and wind during the “spectacular” 

storm. 

The MetService measured 

17mm of rain at Lincoln, while 

residents in various areas of the 

town reported receiving more 

than 20mm in their rain gauges. 

Residents at Rolleston also reported 

heavy rain, while those at 

Prebbleton and Leeston reported 

very little. 

MetService meteorologist Peter 

Little said 17mm was a lot of rain, 

considering in one month Lincoln 

could expect about 45mm. 

The thunderstorm was one of a 

number in Canterbury on Friday. 

It had formed in the foothills 

then drifted south eastwards 

across the northern part of Lake 

Ellesmere then to southern parts 

of Banks Peninsula and out to 

sea. 

“As that thunderstorm tracked 

across it was very intense rainfall, 

it was a very short and sharp 

burst which is very typical for 

thunderstorms,” Little said. 

This summer had so far had 

more thunderstorms than average, 

as northerly winds blew 

across the country under cold air, 

leading to unstable atmospheric 

conditions. 

District council group manager 

infrastructure and property Murray 

Washington said the district 

council’s roading team put up 

signage and checked the drains 

on Eastfield Drive. 

“We’re checking the drains 

in the area to ensure there are 

no blockages that slowed the 

drainage, but overall it’s good to 

see the system working to protect 

properties,” Washington said.

Harness colours remember cancer

WHEN GREG Manson’s horses 

step out onto the race track 

they carry with them a very 

special memory to a mate who 

is remembered for his fight 

for better cancer care in New 

Zealand. 

That special memory is 

Manson’s colours – the initials 

BV emblazoned on black, red 

and white. 

BV stands for Blair Vining, 

who became a national 

identity as he battled terminal 

bowel cancer, presenting a 

140,000-strong petition to 

Parliament with his wife Melissa, 

three months before he died in 

October 2019. 

The black, red and white are 

the colours of Vining’s beloved 

rugby club Midland in Winton. 

A lock, who played about 400 

senior matches, Vining was 

renowned for his toughness. 

“He was a strong man; my 

horses have to be tough like he 

was,” Manson said. 

On Sunday, the colours were to 

the fore when veteran and tough 

as teak pacer Copperfield Rose 

finished third at the Motukarara 

trots. 

“They are very proud 

moments,” said Manson, who 

trains a small team at Lincoln. 

Each time Manson’s horses 

win, there is a tribute to Vining 

in the winner’s circle. 

“Blair’s mentioned every time. 

I love it . . . the awareness of 

cancer, the hospital,” Manson 

said of the Southland Charity 

Hospital Trust, established in 

2019 following Vining’s highlypublicised 

battle providing free 

services to those in the southern 

half of New Zealand who are 

unable to access care through the 

public or private health systems. 

While Copperhead Rose is 

probably in the twilight of his 

career, another Manson pacer 

Franco Marek could carry the 

colours to the top. 

“Copperhead Rose has raced 

for six years. He’s such a tough 

animal. A bit of that is rubbing 

off on Frankie,” he said of 

Franco Marek.

Christmas New Year at 

Motukarara, his fifth win from 

just seven starts.

is a smart horse. We have been 

patient with him and tried to give 

him time to mature. He has got a 

wee way to go, but he knows what

Travellers warned of the 

dangers of dengue fever 


CLIMATE CHANGE and 

increased overseas travel are 

creating a more favourable 

environment for an outbreak of 

dengue fever. 

There was one case of the viral 

illness notified for the district 

in the week ending December 

30, which was the fifth case in 

Canterbury last year. 

The Selwyn case was contracted 

overseas, as are all 

New Zealand cases. But there 

is increasing potential for an 

outbreak of the mosquito-borne 

virus on New Zealand shores in 

a warming climate. 

Dengue is passed on by infected 

mosquitoes of particular 

breeds. Mosquitoes become 

infected when they bite an 

infected person, and can then 

spread the virus to others. 

Community and Public 

Health of Canterbury regularly 

conduct mosquito surveillance 

activities to prevent exotic mosquitoes 

gaining a foothold in 

the region. Both Lyttelton Port 

and Christchurch International 

Airport are considered risk 

areas for incursion as they receive 

cargo and passengers from 

around the world daily.

Manson became mates with 

Vining when he lived in Southland 

through their respective 

wives Karla and Melissa who 

were friends. 

The Mansons and Vinings 

and a handful of other families 

would go to Twizel on holiday 

each year. 

“We still do that with Blair’s 

family,” Manson said. 

Vining was not a horse racing 

person as such. But when 

Manson decided to get back 

into training after an absence 

from the game he suggested to 

Vining that he wanted to change 

his original colours to the BV 

on black, red and white. Vining 

agreed. 

Vining’s family now take a big 

interest in the horses which carry 

their colours , keeping up with 

how they are going and “putting a 

dollar each way on them.”

Canterbury Medical Officer of 

Health Dr Cheryl Brunton said 

lower case numbers in recent 

years were due to fewer people 

travelling overseas in the Covid 

pandemic. 

In Canterbury, there were 23 

cases of dengue notified in 2019, 

five cases in 2020, none in 2021 

and five in 2022. 

Dr Brunton said the mosquitoes 

that spread the virus were 

not commonly found in New 

Zealand. 

“However, as our climate 

becomes warmer and wetter, it 

is possible that mosquito species 

that are competent to spread 

dengue could establish here.” 

There is no specific treatment 

or widely available vaccine 

for dengue, so it is important 

to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes 

when visiting tropical 

and sub-tropical areas worldwide. 

Outbreaks are common in 

the Pacific Islands. 

The infection is usually mild, 

but in rare cases it can be very 

serious. 

Symptoms can last from two 

to seven days and may include a 

sudden fever, intense headache, 

muscle and joint pain, feeling 

very tired, nausea/vomiting and 

a skin rash.

high number of callouts for the 

brigade over the holiday period.

Brigade chief Cam Kenyon 

said fire risk management 

personnel planned to meet 

with Oranga Tamariki to see if 

there was some way to stop this 

happening in future.

over the holiday period. It comes 

after police referred three young 

people allegedly responsible for 

a spate of fires in Rolleston in 

October and November to Youth 

Aid. 

Kenyon said police were 

investigating the two fires, one 

in a park on Brookside Rd on 

January 2 at 6.22am, and the 

other in which two teenage 

females were witnessed leaving 

the scene on Munro Lane 

(December 23, 5pm). 

A police spokesperson said 

police had exhausted all lines 

of inquiry into the January 2 

incident.

Christmas and New Year,

“It’s been a busy time for the

hard yards,” Kenyon said. 

On Christmas Day, there 

were five callouts – bushes on 

fire, a minor two-car crash, a 

car fire, bonfire that needed 

investigation, and a medical. 

On New Year’s Eve, there 

was a callout at 10.45pm about 

smoke coming from a garage. 

Firefighters found the smoke 

had come from a car doing 

burnouts.

Leeston 

crashes 

injure three 


THREE PEOPLE were injured in 

separate car crashes in the Leeston 

area over the holiday period. 

Two were on the same sweeping 

bend on Leeston Dunsandel Rd, 

where it intersects with Prossers Rd. 

The first happened on December 

28 about 8.30pm between a car and 

a motorcyclist who suffered moderate 

injuries. 

The second involved a single 

vehicle with two occupants, on 

December 30 about 10am. The car 

was travelling towards Leeston 

and failed to take the bend and 

overturned. 

One person suffered moderate 

injuries. 

The third crash was on January 

1 on Beethans Rd about 5.50pm, 

where the car overturned, laving 

one person with minor injuries. 

Leeston Volunteer Fire Brigade 

chief Matt Walker said the people 

involved in the crashes had been 

“very lucky” not to have added to 

New Zealand’s deadly holiday road 

toll. The occupants in each crash 

had been correctly restrained. 

New Zealand has had its highest 

road toll in four years over the 

Christmas and New Year break, 

with 20 people killed on the 

country’s roads during the holiday 

period. 


A DELAY in helium arriving 

from Australia meant Pacific 

Radiology Rolleston’s MRI 

scanner was out of action for 

three weeks. 

Patients booked for scans 

had to have their appointments 

rescheduled until the machine 

became operational again 

on Thursday last week, after 

helium was transported from 

Darwin. 

Magnetic Resonance Imaging 

machines require thousands of 

litres of liquid helium to keep 

their magnets cool, but the 

element it is stored in only a 

limited number of sites in Australasia. 

There is also a shortage 

worldwide, threatening the 

long-term future of the imaging 

procedure. 

A patient told the Selwyn 

Times she was booked for a 

non-urgent scan at Rolleston on 

December 20. Pacific Radiology 

staff phoned her on December 

19, saying the scanner was 

“broken.” Staff rescheduled her 

appointment to December 29 

at Pacific Radiology St George’s 

Hospital.

Helium delivery delay prevents 

MRI scanner from operating 

Group general manager South 

Island Tracey Barron said the 

Rolleston MRI machine was out 

of action from December 15 to 

Thursday afternoon last week. 

This was 8.5 working days in 

total, as the machine was not 

scheduled to operate on the 

three working days between 

Christmas and New Year nor 

the statutory holiday days. 

While the delay was at “a 

very busy time” for the branch, 

there was only a “slight delay” 

for patients as they were 

rebooked onto one of Pacific 

Radiology’s other MRI 

scanners in Christchurch, 

Barron said. 

“Our priority is always our 

patients. Our staff opened extra 

lists to accommodate the additional 

demand. We appreciate 

the understanding by patients,” 

she said. 

The machine had gone out of 

action when part of the scanner 

required replacement during a 

routine scheduled service by the 

manufacturer. 

“Unfortunately a small 

amount of helium dissipated as 

a result of this and additional 

helium was required to be 

sourced to ensure the safe operation 

of the machine,” Barron 

said. 

Helium is classified as a dangerous 

or hazardous good, and 

needed to be transported in a 

large metallic canister. 

“This means that it can take 

a while to reach its destination, 

depending on transport 

available and aircraft pilots and 

drivers with the appropriate 

licences. This coupled with the 

Christmas period and statutory 

holidays and ongoing Covid-19 

infections within the transportation 

workforce meant it took 

longer than normal to arrive,” 

she said. 

The delay was not due to any 

shortage of helium supply globally. 

Media have reported in recent 

months that the long-term 

future of MRI is uncertain due 

to a global shortage. 

Helium is a non-renewable 

element found deep within the 

earth’s crust. Major producers 

have decreased supply, 

including Russia which has 

curtailed production since the 

war in Ukraine.

A CHRISTCHURCH-based 

aviation technology company 

is developing pilotless planes to 

fight bushfires from the skies. 

Skybase is converting aircraft 

to fly remotely in a world-leading 

move designed to revolutionise 

firefighting. 

It involves putting high-tech 

artificial-intelligence computer 

systems inside Kiwi-made 

Fletcher top-dressing planes 

and keeping pilots safely behind 

computer screens on the ground. 

The move will mean when 

conditions – such as poor weather, 

fading light or firefighter 

fatigue – ground planes and 

helicopters, the converted drone 

aircraft can still take to the air 

and drop vast litres of water and 

fire retardant on flames and 

hotspots. 

In a New Zealand-first, the 

Civil Aviation Authority granted 

Skybase certification in May 

2022 to carry out remotely operated 

test flights on the condition 

a pilot was on board. 

“That was a key moment for 

aviation in New Zealand,” said 

Skybase founder Michael Read. 

The company, which was 

founded in Christchurch in 2017, 

has been testing the technology 

out of Rangiora airfield. 

Its long-term vision is for the 

aircraft to be completely autonomous. 

But for now, they are 

reliant on pilots to supervise and 

step in when needed. 

The remote pilot on the 

ground has to be qualified in the 

New Zealand-made Pacific Aerospace 

Fletcher - often described 

as a “workhorse” utility plane 

– but can be based anywhere in 

the world. 

Pilots fly as if they’re inside 

the cockpit, talking to air traffic 

control, and watching several 

monitors. 

“You’re doing everything from 

the ground that you would do 

from the air,” said Read, a former 

Royal Australian Air Force pilot. 

The ground technology is connected 

to the aircraft through 


several communication modes, 

including tracking antennae, satellite 

and mobile phone network. 

And the development of Elon 

Musk’s Starlink satellite internet 

constellation could prove a “gamechanger” 

in the future. 

Read envisages the flight 

autonomy upgrade system for 

existing aircraft, dubbed SOFI, 

also becoming useful for other 

sectors, including agriculture, 

mapping, surveillance, cargo 

operations, first responders, 

medevac missions and natural 

disaster responses. 

The plane can carry 1500kg 

and could air-drop emergency 

supplies after floods or cyclones 

and in weather deemed too dangerous 

for manned planes. 

“There are a lot of reasons to 

do this technology other than 

aerial firefighting,” Read said. 

“But right now, that is the focus 

because [fires] are extremely 

dangerous and increasingly 

prevalent.” 

He cites key statistics to support 

his arguments, including 

that around 80 per cent of all 

aviation accidents are caused 

by humans and, in 2021, 17 per 

cent of the world’s carbon emissions 

came from uncontained 

bushfires. 

The ability for pilotless planes 

to be on standby 24/7 could help 

eliminate wildfires “as a catastrophic 

threat”, Read said.

time, safety regulations around 

risk factors such as poor visibility 

mean planes are grounded 

while the fire burns on. 

Most blazes start late in the 

day when it’s hot and thunderstorms 

are active. 

And overnight, when manned 

aircraft aren’t able to fly, can be 

the best time to fight fires, with 

lower winds and temperatures. 

“Not having a human pilot on 

board means the risk benefit is 

very favourable.”

BACKYARD CRITTERS 

LAST WEEK I stumbled 

across a new ladybird on my 

lemon tree. 

THis 4mm long, red ovalshaped 

beetle has five black 

‘spots’ on its hard outer 

forewings and is called the 

vedalia or cardinal ladybird 

(Novius cardinalis). 

THe central spot is linked 

by a black line that runs down 

the centre of the abdomen. 

The head is orange brown and 

the whole upper surface is 

covered in fine hairs. 

THis ladybird was accidently 

introduced from Australia but 

is not commonly observed in 

New Zealand. I was surprised 

to find that the specimen I 

collected at Lincoln is the 

most southern observed on 

iNaturalist. It is found on all 

continents except Antarctica, 

and is an effective biocontrol 

agent of several pests. 

THe cardinal ladybird is a 

predator of small invertebrates 

such as mites, aphids and scale 

insects, including the cottony 

cushion scale. Larvae grow to

A MULTI-talented athlete 

from West Melton is one of 

two Selwyn Netball Centre 

players set to participate at a 

national development camp in 

Ashburton. 

A week before Jody 

McCarthy-Dempsey won 

the junior girls’ long jump 

title at the New Zealand 

secondary schools track, field 

and road championships last 

month she was selected for one 

of three netball camps. The 

New Zealand secondary schools 

squad will be picked from the 

camps. 

The West Melton teenager 

Halswell Rugby League Netball 

Club’s Maddy Laing are 

one of 15 Mainland Netball 

representatives selected for the 

camp from January 20-22. 

Ninety secondary school 

players were picked for the three 

development camps across New 

Zealand. 

They will undergo movement 

competency screening, skill 

development and tournament 

match play. The camps are the 

first step on an elite pathway for 

promising high school netballers. 

Due to being under 16, Jody, 

15, got special dispensation to 

attend the camp and aims to 

make the most of the three days 

with specialist coaches. 

“I feel like for me, it’s going to 

be a good opportunity,” she said. 

Jody has recently switched 

from the attacking end to 

defence, and is excited to 

improve her skills with help

from “different coaches with 

different perspectives.” 

The Darfield High student 

is used to being the youngest 

player in her premier one team 

at Selwyn, but is eager to share 

what she learns at the camp with 

her club and school teammates. 

“I’d like to take the skills 

back to West Melton, and to my 

school so I can encourage and 

help others in my team,” Jody 

said. 

Several current ANZ 

premiership players, such as 

Grace Nweke, Tayla Earle and 

Paris Lokotui, have all started 

their careers through national 

camps. As she starts on a similar 

path, Jody said: “You kind of feel 

proud of yourself, as you can see 

how far players like that have 

come.” Maddy is one of three 

Mainland players picked for the 

development camp for a second 

consecutive year, and is feeling 

confident after “a lot harder” 

selection process than last year. 

“This year it was different 

. . . everyone who wanted to be 

selected participated at a camp in 

Rangiora with Tania Hoffman. 

From there, another camp was

the first one . . . that was at a 

higher level. I was very nervous 

last year, but now that I’m in 

that older year group I feel more 

confident for this year’s camp,” 

she said. 

The 16-year-old said the skills 

she learned at the 2022 camp 

helped her over the season. 

“When it came to my 

season, I found playing with 

new people so much easier after 

having to meet new people and 

play with them at the camp,” she 

said. 

Former Central Pulse assistant 

and current NZSS head 

coach Pelesa Semu will lead the 

three-day camp with former 

Silver Ferns and Southern Steel 

assistant coach Jo Morrison. 

Maddy, who plays in midcourt, 

is looking forward to working 

with both coaches again after 

gaining new skills, particularly 

in defence, last year. 

“They’re really specific and 

very clear, but sometimes with 

club coaches . . . you need to ask 

a lot of questions to understand,” 

she said. 

The camps will be held in 

Ashburton, Auckland and 

Hastings and will be followed 

by the 2023 NZSS netball 

campaign. Maddy and Jody 

will be hoping to impress the 

selectors and be named in the 

final squad selected for what 

will potentially be the first 

international competition for 

the NZSS team for more than 

two years due to the Covid 

restrictions.

performance of Sargent Best at 

Motukarara on Sunday. 

The Art Major five-year-old 

charged from being well back to 

nudge Radioactive Jaffa on the 

line in race 8, the Creedwood 

Equine Agistment Pace. Paying 

$11.50 and $2.80 it was Sargent 

Best’s maiden win at start No 15. 

“It was a good effort. Any 

horse that’s come from last at 

Motukarara has done a good 

job,” said May.

for May – he has four winners 

so far – and, with Ben Hope 

suspended, it’s likely he will have 

plenty of chances to add to his 

tally when he drives for Greg 

and Nina Hope at Nelson on 

Friday and Sunday.

Officials plan 

to audit 

100 stables 

THE RACING Integrity Board 

will audit 100 harness stables this 

year. 

The inspections will measure 

the stables’ compliance with the 

Harness Racing New Zealand 

horse care regulations. 

Last year the RIB audited 

every greyhound kennel in New 

Zealand. 

In October, HRNZ introduced 

its horse care regulations, which 

set out the minimum standard 

of care a person must provide to 

standardbreds in their care. 

The RIB audit will amount to 15 

per cent of 654 registered trainers. 

A team of RIB staff, veterinarians 

and an auditors will visit stables 

and check animal health, as 

well as any facilities used for the 

training, care and containment of 

horses. Trainers will be told of the 

visits in advance. Following each 

audit, a report will be issued to the 

trainer, and to HRNZ, containing 

any areas of non-compliance. 

These areas of non-compliance 

will be addressed as an ‘improvement 

notice’ which trainers will 

be required to comply with. 

Three pilot audits are to be 

carried out in the coming week. 

The results and data gained from 

the audits will help guide the RIB 

and HRNZ to focus on areas that 

may need extra attention and 

education.

A new drinking water pipe is being piped under SH1 over January and 

February, with roadworks required on Ayelsbury Road and Burnham Road.

work, dedication to fitness and 

diet, along with a myriad of 

health issues and the value of 

friendship and loyalty.

It was a career 

that brought him success at the 

wheel of both circuit racing and 

rally cars. For the most part, 

he also built the cars – more 

than 20 were built at his own 

city workshop. At the other 

end of the spectrum was his 

time driving thoroughbred 

BMWs, where he also achieved 

considerable success. 

Few drivers in New Zealand, if 

any, can claim to have achieved 

what Crowe – he lives in Sumner 

– has over such a wide spectrum 

of the sport. Competition has

involved racing on the purposebuilt 

tracks and street circuits, 

plus gravel events with rally 

and hillclimb cars. The true 

significance of Crowe’s success 

is it has been achieved at local, 

national and international 

levels. 

On the track Crowe has won 

the New Zealand Touring 

Car Championship and the 

Asia Pacific Touring Car 

Championship. He was third 

in a Wellington street race, and 

fourth in the world acclaimed 

Bathurst 1000. (All of these 

driving BMWs.) Added to 

this are four Open Saloon Car 

Championship titles, along with 

a win in the New Zealand Sports 

Sedan Championship driving V8 

powered Toyota Starlets. 

Crowe was the first South 

Island driver to win the 

prestigious Ashley Forest 

Rallysprint in 1985 and has won 

10 different regional rallies, 

together with the Coronet 

Peak Hill Climb, the Race 

to the Sky hillclimb and the 

overall New Zealand Hillclimb 

Championship. He has also 

raced a jet boat in Mexico. 

Behind this success has been 

Crowe’s physical fitness, thanks 

primarily to an introduction 

from his partner Colleen, a 

physical education instructor. 

It’s this fitness that has helped 

him maintain focus during 

endurance racing. Running, 

in particular, has also seen 

him compete in the Paris and 

London marathons, which then 

followed the Coast to Coast, just 

to test his fitness further. 

The book also includes the 

latter periods of major health 

issues. Prostate cancer, a brain 

bleed and bladder cancer have all 

interrupted Crowe’s seemingly 

healthy and adventurous 

lifestyle. It is fortunate he has 

come through these issues and 

continues to work and play with 

cars. 

So does he have a favourite 

discipline? 

“Rallying gives you more 

kilometres for your dollar and it 

can be very taxing, but so very 

satisfying at the end,” Crowe 

says. 

“The long distance races 

called on a lot of stamina so I 

am pleased that I have always 

kept myself fit. Racing also gave 

me many memorable moments. 

I loved the fast circuits where 

the old airfield at Wigram was 

a stand out. It had bumps, tight 

area around the hangars with off 

camber, a long main straight and 

a hairpin at the end of it.” 

Now 77, Crowe has continues 

to work his car business. With 

his health issues now aside, 

he reflects how thankful he is 

to have come through these 

challenges and looks forward to 

the next adventure.

Farm safety over 

the holiday period 

Farms are places of work, even over 

the holiday period, so visitors, whether 

family and friends, need to be aware of 

the potential hazards. 

While it’s fun to have tractor or 

farm bike rides, most children are not 

familiar with how they work nor do 

they have the skills and strength to 

control them. Children under 15 are 

most vulnerable for having onsite farm 

accidents. 

When it comes to children, Worksafe 

suggests walking around the farm and 

identifying hazards together. Explain 

to them that they can be injured when 

playing on or near farm machinery such 

as tractors and full-sized quad bikes. 

10 Tips to help keep 

visiting children safe 

on the farm 

1. Before young visitors arrive, make 

sure that you are fully aware of all the 

water hazards on the property – rivers, 

creeks, troughs, dips, tanks, dams and 

ponds, including hot water sources. 

2. Give children safe areas where they 

can go and play. 

3. Set out-of-bounds areas around 

silos, loading areas, dams, power tools 

and animal pens. 

4. Give children high-visibility 

clothing when out and about on farm. 

5. Talk to children about how to 

behave around animals. 

6. Always supervise small children – 

stay close and active with them. Little 

ones can easily wander off and quickly 

get lost or into difficulty. 

7. Make sure dangerous agrichemicals 

are stored safely and out of 

reach of children. 

8. Keep doors shut or locked so 

children can’t access dangerous 

equipment or chemicals. 

9. Do not allow children to ride on 

tractors, quad bikes or on the back of 

utes. 

10. Remove keys from doors 

and vehicles. Never leave vehicles 

unattended with the motor running.

health benefits of growing your own 

AS THE NEW year begins, many 

people resolve to make positive 

changes, eating healthier, 

exercising more, learning more 

and spending more quality time 

with family. 

Gardening can help with all of 

these goals. 

In New Zealand, more families 

have invested in greenhouses, 

building garden beds in their 

backyards or containers. 

Gardening can potentially save 

money on food costs and can 

ensure you have control over the 

quality of the produce. 

For many gardeners though, 

gardening brings them closer to 

nature and a lot of joy. 

January is a good time to tidy 

up the garden by harvesting, 

deadheading flowers, trimming 

hedges, and weeding. It is also 

a good time to plant annuals 

and perennials to add color to 

the garden until autumn. These 

plants will need extra care and 

watering at this time. 

To keep plants healthy during 

the hot summer months, it is 

important to water regularly, use 

mulch, and remove weeds.

• Harvest time. 

• Deadhead flowers to encourage 

more flowering. 

• Trim hedges and do some 

weeding. 

• Keep an eye out for veges/ 

fruits that have blossom end rot,

It is important to make sure 

the plants are well-watered during 

the establishment phase.

summer heat 

• Water regularly – ideally early 

in the morning and/or towards 

later early in the evening. 

If you’re going on a holiday . . . 

• See if you can form an arrangement 

with a neighbour, 

friend or family member to 

water your plants while you are

Mini with strong performance pedigree 

WHEN BMW bought into the 

Mini brand in 1996 it embraced 

the history and concept of the 

early Austin and Morris cars. 

So much so, that even the high 

performance name of Cooper has 

been retained over the years. 

Cooper harks back to 1948 

when father and son Charles and 

John Cooper were making open 

wheel cars for motorsport, to 

which they had much success. 

The British Motor Corporation 

(and British Leyland) capitalised 

on that success and badged many 

of the Mini variants Cooper and 

Cooper S, both had significant 

performance enhancements over 

the standard models. Racing and 

rallying success followed, a Mini 

with either badge was sought 

after and desirable. 

As tribute to the Mini Cooper’s 

illustrious past, today’s Mini 

range incorporates several John 

Cooper Works-badged models 

– three-door, Countryman and 

Clubman, all commonly referred 

to as JCW. 

This evaluation focuses on the 

Clubman, although all immediately 

impress with their sporty 

looks and keen performance, the 

latter thanks to a turbocharged, 

2-litre four-cylinder engine that is 

rated at 225kW and 450Nm. 

These figures are up with the 

competition in terms of power 

output placing the JCW quite 

squarely in the hot hatchback 

market, although with its clever 

twin opening rear door arrangement 

it isn’t exactly a hatchback. 

As the badge Clubman suggests, 

it’s a slimmed down versatile station 

wagon. 

If the engine size and figures 

look familiar, it is much the same 

power plant that can be found in 

BMW’s M135i and, as such, the 

JCW has phenomenal performance 

on tap. It is an engine that 

works effectively through the 

entire rev band and doesn’t need 

to be constantly driven towards 

the top end. Drive is channelled 

through an eight-speed automatic 

transmission. It is characterised 

by quick, strong shifts and ratios 

in the early gears that are biased 

towards quick acceleration. 

The JCW Mini is quick, it will 

lunge to 100km/h from a standstill 

in 5.1sec, and will complete 

an 80-120km/h overtaking 

manoeuvre in 4sec, all of the time 

enticing the driver with a wilful 

engine sound and exhaust growl 

which pops and crackles with 

each gearshift. 

BMW also lists a 7.7-litre per 

100km/h combined cycle fuel 

usage rating. That correlates well 

with the 9.6l/100km showing on 

the test car’s trip readout and the 

6l/100km instantaneous figure

travelling at 100km/h (engine 

speed 1800rpm). 

I took the test car on the 

fabulous roads that make up 

State Highway 72 (Scenic Route), 

through the tight and twisty 

roads out of the river gorges 

the JCW provided accurate and 

stable handling. Grip in the first 

instance is supplied by low profile 

Bridgestone rubber (235/35 x 

19in), and if you add in the benefits 

of drive to all four corners 

through a fully independent 

suspension you end up with a car 

which is delightful and capable in 

a corner. 

Power to the rear is quite strong 

and it gives the false impression 

that it is rear drive only. Just when 

you think oversteer can be initiated 

out of a corner the front bites 

and that force is negated. However, 

it is a wonderful handling feeling 

and certainly draws the driver 

into the feel of the car. That’s what 

buying a sports car represents, 

as a driver you want to feel fully 

involved within the unique characteristics 

of it, the JCW makes 

you feel special, simply because it 

is a very special car. 

The balance of power and handling 

is insightful, the JCW is eager, 

especially in sport mode, but 

there is also normal mode which 

encourages moderate accelerator 

use in order to glean those amazing 

fuel usage figures.

One thing any prospective buyer 

would need to consider is that 

the ride is firm, sure BMW have 

done well to build compliance 

into the system, and there’s just 

enough suspension so that road 

ripples and ruts are absorbed, but 

with the low profile tyres there is 

a constant reminder that this is 

a car that is built so that corners 

can be challenged without a handling 

compromise. 

On that subject, I must mention 

as well, the quality of the 

brakes, huge vented discs are 

fitted at each corner providing 

immense braking power. There 

needs to be strong retardation, 

the JCW fair flies between corners, 

but slowing and stopping is 

quick and constant. 

Inside, the JCW gets all of 

the trim and specification you’d 

expect to find in any BMW, and 

it is laid out in the style which is 

retrospective making the Mini 

concept true to the past and very 

much a standout. 

The JCW Clubman is priced 

from $75,940, as with all BMW 

product there are a vast array of 

specification and trim options 

depending on your taste and 

need, and the evaluation car was 

carrying several extras. However, 

it is still priced firmly amidst its 

competition. 

There are many high 

performance models that share 

similar performance around 

the same price, but the Mini 

is much different in terms 

of styling, I particularly like 

the rear doors system and, 

of course, I like the interior 

design details that hark back to 

the 1960s. What I’m referring 

to there is the switchgear and 

toggle arrangements that form 

part of the centre console dash 

panel, they look and feel great 

to manipulate. That attention to 

detail is something to treasure. 

When I met my wife 42 years 

ago she had a Morris Mini and 

it served her well for many 

years. Every time I’m in a new 

generation model I relate to that 

early 850. Sure, the Mini today 

is a vastly different in terms of 

technology, but there are many 

elements that transport you back 

to that era.

Making the most of 

show home viewing 

Looking through show homes is a great way to get ideas for 

features and fittings to put into a new home. It can also be helpful 

for getting a spatial feel for other aspects of a house design. 

Before heading out for a day’s 

viewing, conduct an internet search. 

identify the locations of show home 

villages and the types and sizes of the 

various building company’s homes on 

display, noting down the square metre 

size of each home. 

if wanting a high end, architectural 

design, focus on the larger homes that 

have desirable design features. if at the 

entry or middle level of the market, 

earmark homes that fit this taking in 

other show homes for extra ideas. 

allow sufficient time when visiting each 

show home, asking for a floor plan that 

has room sizes before walking through. 

Check also the floor to ceiling height 

of the rooms and consider how this feels 

and whether you prefer a cosier feel with 

the standard ceiling eight of 2.4 metres or 

more spaciousness created with a higher 

stud or exposed ceiling beams.
