Bins, charity boxes part of 

rubbish system review

Consultation opened this 

week on the proposed Draft 

Waste Management and 

Minimisation Bylaw 2023 

bylaw, which allows regulation 

of all waste collection services 

and operations. 

Currently the city council 

has two waste bylaws – the 

Waste Management Bylaw 2009 

and the Cleanfill and Waste 

Handling Operations Bylaw 

2015.

current bylaws were legally due 

for review in 2025. 

“However, we decided to 

review them sooner to ensure 

they remain fit for purpose. 

Following the review we 

proposed new one,” he said. 

“The new bylaw is consistent 

with recent changes to 

regulations under the Waste 

Minimisation Act and our 

climate resilience strategy. It

WHEN YOU have $160,000 of 

methamphetamine, $108,860 

in cash and a sawn-off rifle in 

your car the last thing you want 

to run into is a major police 

operation. 

But that is what happened 

to Benjamin Jaye Smith, who 

was stopped in an armed 

police cordon in Spreydon on 

March 15, 2019 – the day of the 

mosque terror attacks. 

Police were not looking 

for him, but other potential 

terrorists after they had other 

captured the gunman nearby in 

Brougham St. 

The case can be revealed 

following guilty pleas by Smith 

in the district court. Smith is 

set to be sentenced on May 24, 

2023. 

According to the summary 

of facts, as the mosque gunman 

was arrested in Brougham St 

he indicated to police he had 

bombs inside his car. 

Armed cordon points were 

set up to secure and contain a 

250m area radius of his car 

due to the IED in the boot of 

his car, and the possibility it 

may explode prior to being 

made safe. 

The terrorist also told police 

there were nine active shooters 

in the city. Police staff were 

advised there were likely other 

people and vehicles outstanding 

in relation to the shootings. 

About 3.30pm Smith was 

driving his car in a northerly 

direction on Strickland St. 

An armed police officer 

stationed at a cordon point 

on Strickland St heard his car 

approaching the cordon at 

speed and believed the car was 

not going to stop. 

As Smith came around 

a blind corner, he stopped 

abruptly behind a row of cars 

already at the cordon point. 

An armed police officer 

approached Smith’s car and 

conducted an armed vehicle 

stop. He then invoked a Search 

and Surveillance Act search of 

the car after seeing the butt of a 

sawn-off rifle in the boot. 

The officer found a sawn-off 

.22 calibre pistol about 750mm 

in length with one round of 

ammunition in the chamber. A 

silencer was also located in the 

car. 

Inside the magazine attached 

to the pistol were five rounds of 

.22 calibre ammunition. 

The car was then towed and 

secured at the Christchurch 

South Police Station. 

The following day police 

searched the car again. 

Inside was an electronic cash 

counting machine and a sentry 

safe containing $108,860 cash 

and 921 grams of methamphetamine. 

The methamphetamine was 

worth about $160,000. 

Text messages revealed Smith 

supplied controlled drugs, likely 

to be methamphetamine, to 

a person who then sold it to 

various people in the Tasman 

area.

THE COMPETITION was as 

hot as the water was cold, but 

Hannah Drury still managed to 

swim her way to world record 

success. 

The 44-year-old said four 

months of bathing in her garage 

chest freezer had paid off, as she 

arrived back home in Canterbury 

last week with two gold medals 

from the world ice-swimming 

championships in Samoëns, 

France. 

She won gold in the 100mbutterfly, 

where she recorded an 

age-group world record time of 

1min 33.69sec, and the 100m 

individual medley, where she recorded 

an age-group world record 

time of 1min 33.07sec. 

“I am really proud of what I 

achieved and I didn’t think I 

would swim as fast as I did. I 

certainly never expected to win 

two gold medals in record times,” 

Drury said. 

Her training regime involved 

sitting in her freezer filled with 

ice-cold water for up to six 

minutes a day. 

“I definitely think it helped, 

because once I got into the lake, 

which was about three degrees, I 

didn’t bat an eyelid at the cold. It 

was more about getting on with 

fast swimming.” 

The competition was “fierce” 

with more than 350 swimmers 

from about 40 countries. 

The lake water temperature 

had been “perfect” at 3-4 deg C, 

in spite of unseasonably mild 

weather across Europe. 

The New Zealand team of eight 

swimmers finished ninth on 

the medal table, bringing home 

10 golds, four silvers and two 

bronzes. 

Drury said she and her team 

members had an “awesome 

time” in Samoëns and enjoyed 

the supportive and friendly 

atmosphere in “the frozen 

village”. 

“The New Zealand team were 

well recognised, and the other 

teams loved how we were so tightknit 

and had travelled so far to be 

there,” she said. 

A memorable moment was 

when one of the team members 

lost their togs during a race. 

“Thankfully they were not 

disqualified.” 

Drury said she was looking 

forward to the upcoming 

competitions in New Zealand 

over winter, the first of which is 

in July at St Bathans in Central 

Otago. 

She had not yet returned to 

bathing in her freezer, but was 

not ruling it out in the next few 

weeks, especially as she wanted 

to stay acclimatised to the cold 

conditions. 

“The freezer is still there ready 

for me to get in,” she said.

Property prices hold up against the trend

PROPERTY PRICES in 

Christchurch have fallen just 

one per cent over the last year, 

while other major centres have 

suffered a marked drop. 

Wellington was down 18.1 per 

cent, Auckland 8.2 per cent and 

Dunedin 10 per cent, January’s 

CoreLogic House Price Index 

shows. House prices fell in all 

the major centres and regions, 

apart from Gisborne, New 

Plymouth and Queenstown. 

The index saw residential 

property values fall 7.2 per cent 

over the year earlier, which was 

the biggest 12-month decline 

since May 2009’s drop of 7.9 per 

cent. Further falls of between 15 

and 20 per cent expected in the 

second half of this year. 

However, CoreLogic chief 

property economist Kelvin 

Davidson said last month’s drop 

was smaller than the worst of 

the global financial crisis, when 

prices fell 9.7 per cent in the year 

to March 2009. 

He said the green shoots of 

optimism seen in October and 

November evaporated following 

the Reserve Bank’s gloomy 

monetary policy statement in 

late November, which pointed 

to rising interest rates and a 

recession from the middle of 

this year.

People wanting live venues in the 

central city to be allowed to play 

louder music have taken their 

case to the city council. A petition 

signed by just over 3500 people 

was presented to city councillors 

at their meeting yesterday. The 

petition is the latest move in the 

saga over live music in the central 

city after bar Dux Central in 

Lichfield St had to drop live music 

after a new neighbour complained 

about the noise. The petition 

was presented to city councillors 

by musician Mark Chirnside. It 

calls for the maximum permitted 

decibels within the central city to 

be raised from 60dB to 140dB. 

FEEDBACK SOUGHT OVER 

CATTLE BARNS 

Residents will be given the chance 

to give feedback on a farmer’s 

consent application to build 

four large indoor cattle barns on 

Banks Peninsula. Farm company 

Wongan Hills has applied 

for consents to Environment 

Canterbury to build four large 

composting feed farms on their 

Kaituna Valley farm – which 

could hold up to 2200 cattle – 

near Te Waihora Lake Ellesmere. 

The four large sheds would house 

the cattle 24 hours a day, yearround. 

Local community group 

Little River Eco Collective has 

been vocal in opposition to the 

proposed barns – saying they will 

have detrimental effects on the

PRINTING UP A STINK 

Two Canterbury University 

students Joel Tregurtha and Te 

Matau O Te Rangi Allen have 

spent their summer developing 

and 3D printing a model stink 

bug. The project has seen the 

development of a prototype larger 

than life-size model of the brown 

marmorated stink bug, which is 

about the size of a 10 cent coin. 

The stink bug is an east Asian 

bug now found in North and 

South America and Europe. It 

is a particularly difficult pest to 

eradicate and control, devastating 

horticulture and causing a 

nuisance overwintering in homes. 

As a hitchhiker, the risk of it 

arriving in New Zealand is high.

The summary of facts said 

Smith was a supplier of “significant 

quantities of methamphetamine” 

to at least six different 

people between February 1 and 

March 15, 2019. The cash turnover 

from the drug dealing was in 

the thousands of dollars. 

“The seizure of drugs and cash 

on 15 March, 2019, combined 

with the telecommunications 

data from the defendant’s cellphone 

identifies the defendant as 

a major dealer/high-volume supplier 

of methamphetamine and 

a distribution network located 

throughout the South Island and 

lower North Island.” 

Smith showed a leadership 

position and people underneath 

him would regularly report back 

to him regarding sales and the 

cash they were holding.

arrest Smith exercised his 

rights to silence, but later 

admitted his knowledge and

On April 3, 2019, Smith was 

questioned in relation to the 

other items located in his car. He 

admitted the cash was his, but 

declined to comment on the safe 

and its contents.

More homes affected by sea level rise

A NEW assessment on the 

threat of sea level rise means the 

number of ‘at risk’ properties 

in the city, on Banks Peninsula 

and along Pegasus Bay coast has 

increased by nearly 20 per cent. 

The coastal hazards assessment 

report for the city council, undertaken 

by environmental consultancy 

company Tonkin+Taylor, 

has identified 5400 more vulnerable 

properties across Christchurch, 

including 1500 more on the 

peninsula.

32,800 properties 

across greater 

Christchurch considered 

in danger

lying suburbs like Linwood,

was included in a previous 

assessment in 2017, “leading to 

1500 more properties in that 

area being identified at risk,” 

Stevenson said.

properties are in Diamond 

Harbour, Duvauchelle, Le Bons 

Bay, Lyttelton, Okains Bay and 

Wainui. In each area more than 

100 properties have been newly 

identified at risk, said Stevenson. 

Other areas affected include 

Birdlings Flat, Governors Bay, 

Little River, Motukarara, Pigeon 

Bay and Port Levy, but to a lesser 

extent. 

Property owners have had 

the information added to their 

Land Information Memorandum 

(LIM) so they are aware of the 

risk. The city council has also 

sent letters to property owners 

with the latest information 

included. 

“We appreciate this is not 

welcome news for some residents, 

but we wanted to let people know 

what information is held by the 

council for their 

property,” said city 

council general 

manager infrastructure, 

planning and

For some properties, including 

some at Southshore, this has 

meant a lower assessed risk than 

in 2017. 

Said Stevenson: “It’s important 

to understand that this recent 

notification . . . adds to existing 

coastal hazards LIM comments 

from the 2017 Coastal Hazards 

Assessment.” 

Some some properties assessed 

in 2017 were not re-assessed and 

some properties assessed in 2021 

were not previously assessed in 

2017. 

The earlier assessment also 

included areas further up rivers 

within the city, where coastal 

flooding is less dominant but 

remains a factor, Stevenson 

said.

Suspected murder-suicide of elderly 

Three years after his 

parents died in a 

suspected murdersuicide, 

one question 

still haunts their 

youngest son. Sam 

Sherwood reports 

SEAN FEARY was sitting at 

home in Washington when his 

29-year-old daughter called from 

Christchurch. Clearly distressed 

she immediately said, “Grandma 

and Granddad have been 

murdered”. 

Feary tried to reassure her 

and said she was wrong and that 

they were fine. She then told him 

about news articles that showed 

his parents’ home in Christchurch 

and reports that two bodies 

had been found. 

He told her to head straight to 

the scene and talk to the police officers 

there. When she arrived, she 

called her dad again and he spoke 

with a police officer at the scene. 

The officer explained how 

Feary’s father, Bill Feary, 80, had 

called the police about 4am on 

September 30, 2019, and told the 

operator he had killed his ailing 

77-year-old wife Jill, and was 

intending on self harming. 

A police negotiation team and 

armed offenders squad rushed 

to the property immediately. 

After breaking in they found the 

couple dead. 

The district’s top police officer 

said at the time the deaths were 

an “absolute tragedy”. 

Feary, speaking to the Herald 

on Sunday for the first time, 

says he has no doubt the couple 

planned their deaths. 

“To me it’s like a Romeo and 

Juliet story. Mum couldn’t take 

anymore and he couldn’t live 

without her. She was his whole 

life. 

“I couldn’t have asked for 

better parents.” 

Sean Feary was born in 

Wellington but the family, 

including his older brother, 

soon moved to Christchurch. 

Bill Feary, who was the boys’ 

stepfather, raised them from 

when Feary was about eight. 

“Dad made me the man I am 

today, he was awesome,” Feary 

says. 

“They always took us on little 

holidays and things like that, 

it was just normal Kiwi life. It

was great.” 

Bill Feary spent most of his 

career in broadcasting as a rigger, 

before moving to Christchurch 

and working for a flooring 

company and then taking up a 

job as a bus driver before retiring. 

Jill Feary worked at a local 

clothing apparel company until 

she retired. 

Sean Feary moved to the US 

when he was 30, but kept in constant 

contact with his parents. 

Jill Feary’s retirement was 

marred by health issues including 

chronic obstructive pulmonary 

disease – an inflammatory lung 

disease that causes obstructed 

airflow from the lungs – as well 

as a virus that injured her heart. 

This was followed by breast cancer, 

which required her to have a 

mastectomy in her mid-60s. 

Despite the major operation, 

she made sure she was able to 

travel to see her son and celebrate 

his 40th birthday. 

However, she never fully healed 

from the surgery, with complications 

that would continue for the 

last 12 years of her life. Near the 

end, she had pneumonia. 

Feary says his mum was too 

stubborn to have someone come 

and care for her. 

“There was no way that mum 

was going to have someone 

changing a nappy or bathing her 

because she went through it with 

my grandmother and there was 

no dignity in that,” he says. 

“She was definitely suffering, 

and I could tell when I spoke to 

her she was in a lot of pain.” 

Her health issues continued 

to worsen and she had to visit 

the hospital two or three times a 

week. 

“She loved the Christchurch 

Hospital staff,” her son says. 

“They did nothing but take 

care of her.” 

Sean Feary is adamant his parents 

planned their deaths. 

Bill Feary, who took on the 

role of caring for Jill, became 

more protective of his wife as her 

condition worsened.

“He didn’t want her stressing 

out, didn’t want her doing too 

much. He did all the cooking, 

he babied her, and he really took 

care of mum a lot, above and 

beyond. 

“He adored her, she was his 

soulmate.” 

Bill Feary would often email 

him with updates about his 

mother’s health. The last email 

was to inform him she had 

pneumonia. 

Feary got a call from his mum 

in March 2019 asking him to 

come home as she missed him 

and wanted to see him. He did 

so, spending a few weeks with 

the couple, and he said aside 

from the health issues the couple 

appeared to be fine. 

“Dad was still goofy as ever.” 

Feary’s last conversation 

with his parents – who had 

10 grandchildren and nine 

great-grandchildren – was just a 

“normal phone call”, he recalls. 

“Mum and Dad were just 

joking around.” 

He was supposed to call them 

the following weekend but 

forgot. The next day he was on 

the phone with the policeman 

who was telling him about his 

parents’ deaths. 

“It was such a shock; I just 

went numb.” 

After consoling his wife and 

children, he booked flights and

was in Christchurch within two 

days. 

Immediately after touching 

down, he went to identify his 

parents at Christchurch Hospital 

before going to their home. 

“The police were brilliant. I 

got there and it was like nothing 

had happened; they repaired the 

house.” 

In the bedroom Feary would 

stay in when he visited was a 

large bag on the bed. Inside 

was his children’s favourite 

chocolate, jet plane lollies for 

him, socks for his wife, and 

photos of his children. He is 

convinced his mum left it all for 

him shortly before she died. 

“I know Mum knew what 

was going on. Dad wouldn’t 

have done that, that was Mum 

through and through.” 

A will was also left in the 

living room. 

Feary spent about a month 

in Christchurch, dealing with 

police and lawyers and sorting 

the family home. 

“I didn’t really have time to 

grieve. My whole time there 

was just dealing with what had 

happened.” 

He credits Victim Support 

staff for helping him come to 

terms with his parents’ death 

while he was in the country. 

Three years on, Feary, now 

54, is still coming to terms 

with what happened. A private 

person, he does not like 

speaking about it too often 

and tries to stay busy, but 

admits there are times when 

the emotions just come to him, 

seemingly out of nowhere. 

“I miss them every day. I 

will be driving to work in my 

van and it’ll just hit me again. 

Sometimes I have a tear and a 

wee bit of a cry and I’ll be like 

why? Just out of the blue. It’s one 

of those things,” he says. 

“I’m just grateful that I’ve got 

great kids and my wife has been 

nothing but supportive.” 

Asked how he feels towards 

his father, he says he loves him 

and holds no ill will for what 

happened. 

“Dad was pretty healthy and 

he just would not want to live 

without Mum. I don’t know 

many men that would’ve gone 

through what he went through 

and completely stick behind 

Mum 100 per cent in the way he 

took care of her. 

“They loved each other so 

much.” 

There are still some 

unanswered questions for Feary, 

which he hopes a coroner’s 

report will one day solve. 

But the most important 

question, that still haunts him, is 

about his mum. 

“I want to make sure my mum 

never suffered and that she was 

at peace. 

“It would be closure because I 

keep thinking about it.”

Another twist in the Cave Rock 


THE FUTURE of one of the 

most desirable coastal building 

sites in Christchurch is up in the 

air – yet again. 

The controversial and 

troublesome 4186m 2 site facing 

the beach at the entrance to 

Sumner village has been 

fenced bare land for years, except 

for a tavern building with a 

large derelict and often-flooded 

basement car park underneath. 

One of the owners, Lime 

Developments, has refused to 

comment on its latest plans but 

it appears a 2021 a proposal to 

build apartments with a wine bar 

underneath, alongside a private 

residence, have evaporated. 

Another shareholder, developer 

Shane Kennedy, had been in 

talks with the city council, saying 

he intended to start building in 

2021. A resource consent was 

granted last year but now a new 

resource consent application 

has been lodged for a larger 

complex called The Marriner. It 

proposes 14 apartments and six 

commercial units covering the 

entire western half of the site. 

Kennedy has also declined to 

comment on the latest plans. 

For more than 25 years the former 

Cave Rock Apartments site 

has been plagued with conflict, 

bitterness, controversy and bad 

luck. It started in the mid-1990s 

when plans for a 49-apartment

was first announced by developer

Peter Foster, and neighbours 

objected. They were finally approved 

and the complex was built 

in 1998. 

Just a few years later problems 

emerged as many of the apartments 

were found to have design 

defects and were leaky buildings. 

An agreement had to be negotiated 

with the city council and the 

builder to repair them. 

Mainzeal was about to start repairs 

when the February 22, 2011, 

earthquake struck and the main 

block was abandoned soon after. 

The entire complex then 

became the subject of a long and 

bitter dispute between the owners, 

and with EQC and NZI (part 

of IAG) over how to repair the 

buildings and flooded basement 

car park at the eastern end of the 

site. The complex continued to 

suffer after the quakes, Mainzeal 

went bust, and architect Peter 

Beavan died aged 86 from cancer 

caused by asbestos. The main 

block was finally demolished in 

2012. 

In 2016, the owners rejected 

a $16 million full and final 

settlement offer from the insurers 

and two more years went by 

before they finally settled at 

mediation on the eve of High 

Court action for an undisclosed 

sum. A plan to rebuild the main 

block was then abandoned after 

costs escalated and, in 2018, a 

conditional offer to purchase the 

property as-is-where-is for $4.8m 

was accepted. More in-fighting 

followed as four apartment 

owners, unhappy with how the 

money was to be distributed, 

refused to sell. They included the 

original developer, Peter Foster.

The High Court was called on 

to settle that dispute, too, ordering 

them to sell. Then, even more 

dispute and legal action over the 

agreed purchase price after vandals 

damaged the buildings. 

When it was all over, owners 

were finally paid the last of the 

proceeds in April 2021, but not 

before 14 of the original residents 

had died in the meantime. 

The purchaser Jonathan Lyttle 

of Citadel Property said at the 

time he was excited about taking 

over the site. 

“We are really happy for the 

members of the body corporate 

and owners who have been 

through quite an ordeal,” he said. 

However, not long after, he 

demolished the remaining apartments 

and in mid-2020 the land 

was divided into five plots, later 

changed to four, in a process complicated 

by a stormwater easement 

running through the middle of 

the site. 

The sections were marketed 

for a while as sites for owner-occupiers 

or builders, but only one 

sold. Concrete foundations were 

poured for the private residence 

and locals said timber framing 

and trusses turned up on site but 

soon after, they were taken away 

again. 

Marriner Developments then 

acquired the entire site. 

Several resource consents have 

been applied for and granted for 

the site over the past few years, the 

most recent late last year which 

the city council is reviewing. 

City council planners said 

they cannot confirm when the 

latest application for a mixed use 

complex might be considered.

Boy’s close call with irrigator 


A BOY FACES a slow recovery 

after being seriously injured by 

a lawn irrigator while playing in 

a park. 

Ten-year-old Jayden sustained 

a depressed skull fracture and 

bleed on the brain after being hit 

on his head by a rotating arm of 

the machine. 

He was visiting Southbridge 

Domain playground with his 

grandmother Angela Slade and 

eight-year-old cousin Emily. 

Angela said the visit to the 

park suddenly became a life-anddeath 

situation after Jayden was 

attracted to water around the 

travelling roto-rainer irrigator in 

hot weather. He was struck as he 

stood up after slipping. 

Angela said at first she had not 

noticed Jayden had wandered 

about 15m away to play under 

the irrigator on an adjoining 

rugby field. As she unpacked 

food onto a picnic table, she 

heard “a horrible, horrible 

scream”. 

“That’s when I turned around, 

he was just getting back up again 

and the bar nearly got him again. 

I’m like: ‘Get out, get out’.” 

Angela said while she had earlier 

pointed out to the children 

a single caution sign nearby 

saying ‘Potentially Dangerous 

Equipment’, this had obviously 

not been enough to keep Jayden 

away. 

Jayden was in extreme pain 

after the accident and began 

vomiting. He was taken to 

Christchurch Hospital by ambulance.

severe concussion, but they were 

as surprised as she was when 

a CT scan showed a depressed 

skull fracture and bleed on the 

brain. 

Last week he had a craniotomy, 

where a 10cm long piece of bone 

from his forehead was removed 

and replaced with a plate. He 

may have to have more surgeries 

to replace the plate as he grows. 

He was discharged at the weekend, 

and is expected to make a 

full recovery. But that recovery 

will be slow as he suffers the 

head injury effects of fatigue, 

headaches, irritability and light 

sensitivity. He will be at school 

only part-time throughout term 

one. 

Whittaker said she was glad to 

hear the Selwyn District Council 

had removed all such irrigators 

from operation in parks and 

reserves. She said while the caution 

sign had been pointed out 

to Jayden, he would not have absorbed 

the information due to a 

learning disability and dyslexia. 

“I don’t want it to happen to 

anybody else,” she said. 

Selwyn District council group 

manager infrastructure and 

property Murray Washington 

said while in operation the 

irrigator had three caution 

signs “placed at different points 

around the reserve to alert people 

approaching from different 

directions.” 

“This type of irrigator is 

common in rural areas and has 

been used by the council for 

around 30 years without incident 

to our knowledge. We plan 

to replace them with modern 

technology water cannon type 

irrigators, which will minimise 

any future risk to the public.”

THE OWNER of a painting 

business repeatedly smacked 

the bottom of one of his young 

female employees and told 

another “one day I will get you” 

before plying her with vodka and 

attempting to rape her during a 

work trip. 

Gerald Mark Diver’s victims 

said his unwanted sexual behaviour 

towards them became 

“normal” and it was often passed 

off by him as “workplace banter”. 

But on Monday, the 53-yearold 

owner of Gerald Diver Painter 

& Decorator was sentenced in 

the district court to four years 

and four months in jail, after the 

two women revealed his offending 

and brought to an end his 

workplace harassment. 

The first former employee, 

referred to in court as victim 

A, said she had become “numb 

and immune” to Diver slapping 

her bottom. After experiencing 

the assault almost daily for 

several years, it became normal 

behaviour, she said. 

He would also make comments 

to her such as “you’re 

looking good today”. 

The woman felt “unworthy 

and belittled”. Diver paid her 

minimum wage and told her she 

wasn’t worth more, despite her 

being a qualified painter. She 

eventually resigned. 

As she began to believe Diver’s 

treatment of her was standard, 

other men started disrespecting 

her too. 

She didn’t speak up about the 

assaults while employed by him 

as she feared her voice would not 

be heard over that of her boss’. 

Victim B told the court she 

was once a “strong, jovial and 

happy painter” who was handpicked 

by Diver to work for his 

company. 

But he would later sack her 

after she confronted him about 

attempting to rape her. 

The experience lingered in 

her new relationships, making 

it difficult for her to trust. Panic 

attacks and flashbacks became 

a common occurrence and she 

missed out on celebrating milestones 

with her loved ones. 

“Gerald Diver deserves to 

feel the full force of the justice 

system given the offence of the 

crimes he inflicted on me and 

his other victims,” she said in her 

victim impact statement. 

Diver had once been overheard 

by victim A telling victim B “I 

will sleep with you one day”. . . 

“one day I will get you”. 

In September 2020, victim 

B and Diver travelled north of 

Christchurch for an overnight 

work trip. They were staying in a 

shared motel unit with separate 

bedrooms. 

Following a day’s work, 

they had dinner together and 

Diver bought a one-litre bottle of 

vodka which they drank in the 

games room of the motel. 

Victim B said she got drunk 

“really fast” and Diver began 

saying “vile” things to her of a 

sexual nature and told her to 

keep drinking. 

After they left the games room 

Diver tried to pull her into the 

motel unit despite her repeatedly 

saying “no” and pushing him 

away. 

She recalled him becoming 

aggressive and continuing to pull 

her before she blacked out in a 

bedroom. 

The next morning she woke 

to find she was not wearing any 

tights or underwear. She could 

recall being held down, unable to 

move or see anything and feeling 

a “massive” weight on her. 

At the time, victim B didn’t say 

anything to Diver about what 

had happened but a few days 

later she raised it with him and 

stated she did not want to work 

alongside him that week. 

Diver told her nothing happened 

and she was “making 

things up”, she said. But a few 

days later when she tried to confront 

him again, he cancelled her 

work and sent her home. 

Diver faced a charge of attempted 

sexual violation by rape 

and a representative count of 

indecent assault, having been 

found guilty in an earlier judgealone 

trial. 

Diver was initially charged 

with rape but at trial the court 

heard his erectile dysfunction 

meant he could not achieve 

an erection long enough for 

penetration. This was used as 

his defence, which contributed 

to the charge being reduced to 

attempted rape. 

At sentencing, Crown prosecutor 

Courtney Martyn questioned 

Diver’s claimed remorse, submitting 

it was actually self-pitying. 

Defence lawyer Grant Fletcher 

said the court must take into 

consideration that rape had not 

been proven and it was instead 

attempted rape. 

But Judge Michael Crosbie 

resisted the submission, stating: 

“It is not a clumsy attempt. I find 

it likely that Mr Diver raped her.”

THE DRIVER behind a fatal 

hit-and-run told police it was 

his friend who was responsible 

for the crash and he didn’t know 

anything about it. 

But in the district court, 

Anthony Alexander Thomas 

admitted he had lied to police 

about being in the passenger seat 

when his Subaru vehicle collided 

with cyclist Sean William Russell 

Innes in Linwood. 

He pleaded guilty to conspiring 

to defeat the course of justice 

after having earlier admitted 

to driving dangerously causing 

death and failing to stop and 

ascertain injury. 

Initially, a 44-year-old Ashburton 

man who has interim name 

suppression was accused of the 

hit-and-run. 

But Thomas, a 30-year-old 

farmer from Ashburton, later 

owned up to being behind the 

wheel after he was “overcome 

with guilt” when Innes, 45, died 

in hospital two weeks later. 

According to the summary of 

facts, Thomas and his co-accused 

were travelling from Ashburton 

to Christchurch about 3pm on 

September 13 last year. 

Thomas was driving and his 

co-accused was in the passenger 

seat as the car turned onto Linwood 

Ave, which was busy with 

traffic at the time. 

As he approached stationary 

traffic at the intersection 

of Linwood Ave and Buckleys 

Rd, Thomas drove along the 

left-hand shoulder of the road, 

designated for cyclists. 

Innes, who was cycling, was 

struck from behind and forced 

up onto the car’s bonnet before 

being thrown onto the road. 

Thomas, who was travelling at 

least 73km/h when he hit Innes, 

made no attempt to slow down 

or stop following the collision. 

Instead, he completed a left turn 

and fled the scene. 

A short distance from the 

crash site, Thomas pulled over 

and swapped seats with his coaccused. 

The man then drove the 

car towards Burwood, having to 

steer while looking out the window 

due to the windscreen damage.

Later that evening, Thomas 

called the police and reported his 

vehicle as stolen, claiming he had 

woken up to find it missing. 

But after hearing Innes had 

died as a result of the crash, 

Thomas came clean and was 

arrested and charged. He was remanded 

on electronically monitored 

bail ahead of his sentencing 

on May 4. 

His co-accused did not turn up 

to court, prompting the judge to 

issue a warrant for his arrest. 


THE NAME of a Merivale man 

who used the handle “Superdad” 

to operate an account to upload 

sexual content involving children 

and share with other users his 

dark desire to “perv on young 

kids” can now be revealed. 

Anthony David Cook, 59, was 

sentenced in the district court 

last week to four years and one 

month in prison for sharing and 

possessing child sexual exploitation 

material. 

According to the summary 

of facts, in 2015 Cook used fake 

details and the username Superdad748 

to create an account on a 

social media messenger platform 

located in the United States. 

In January 2019, he uploaded 

CSEM involving a boy aged between 

seven and 10 years. 

This was detected by the social 

media platform and while it was 

reported to authorities, a suspect 

could not be linked to the distribution 

of the image.

CSEM, distributing a total of 41

images to seven recipients until 

services were able to link it to his 

account. 

In October 2021, police 

searched Cook’s Merivale home 

and found two iPhones. 

The phones were searched and 

a total of 1056 objectionable publications 

were discovered. Some 

involved children as young as 

four years old performing sexual 

acts on adults. 

According to the summary, 

Cook would message others on 

the platform and express how he 

“loved to perv on young kids getting 

changed”. 

“I think the pools will finally 

get a visit from me this weekend. 

Can’t stop thinking about the 

little boy’s c****,” he said in one 

exchange. 

In another message, Cook 

described seeing a 10-year-old 

girl at a customer’s home he had 

visited. He told the recipient he 

had been thinking of the girl in a 

sexual way. 

“I stared at her when I could 

and she held my gaze.”

Arrested pornographer faces nervy wait

AN EX-PAT Cantabrian who 

helped trick women into 

becoming porn stars has lost his 

US lawyer and had sentencing 

delayed – while his old boss and 

Christchurch schoolboy friend is 

awaiting extradition from Spain 

after appearing on the FBI’s Ten 

Most Wanted Fugitives list. 

Matthew Isaac Wolfe, aka 

‘Ben’, was due to be sentenced in 

a San Diego courtroom this week 

for his roles in the GirlsDoPorn 

scandal. 

Wolfe, 41, is facing a maximum 

sentence of life imprisonment 

after earlier pleading guilty 

to conspiracy to commit sex 

trafficking. 

But he faces a nervy wait until 

May 25 to learn of his fate. 

Court documents seen by the 

NZ Herald reveal that Wolfe 

needs more time to finish his 

paperwork to “address the 

complicated issues involved in 

the matter”. He has also had a 

change in attorneys. 

Wolfe was a cameraman and 

office assistant to Christchurch 

primary school buddy Michael 

James Pratt’s shady porn empire 

behind popular adult websites 

GirlsDoPorn and GirlsDoToys. 

Others have already been 

convicted for their parts in the 

scandal. 

And Pratt, who had been on 

the run since 2019, was finally 

arrested in Spain just before 

Christmas. 

Spanish police announced the 

arrest on Twitter, publishing a 

video of officers handcuffing a 

man and searching him. 

A spokeswoman for the FBI, 

which had offered US$100,000 

for information on Pratt’s 

whereabouts, this week told the 

NZ Herald he is “still awaiting 

extradition”. 

To persuade women to appear 

in the videos, Wolfe admitted to 

telling them the videos would 

never be posted online, would 

never be released in the United 

States, and that no one who 

knew the women would ever find 

out about their production. 

Women targeted by Wolfe said 

in a US$20 million lawsuit that 

he had promised them the videos 

would only be seen by private 

collectors in Australia and New 

Zealand. 

Many of those duped into 

filming were struggling financially 

and offered between 

US$3000-US$5000 as payment, 

as well as an “all expenses” trip 

to San Diego. They were taken to 

motel rooms where the footage 

was filmed. 

The videos were then posted to 

the company’s own subscriptionbased 

website, while shorter versions 

were posted to some of the 

world’s largest pornography sites, 

with the company profiting over 

$17 million in revenue according 

to court documents. 

The videos were viewed over a 

billion times – a conservative figure 

that doesn’t take into account 

pirated copies of the files. 

According to the United 

States Department of Justice, 

Wolfe admitted that he moved 

to the United States in 2011 to 

work for Pratt, the owner of the 

GirlsDoPorn and GirlsDoToys 

websites. 

The pair had been friends since 

childhood, growing up together 

in Christchurch. 

“Wolfe filmed approximately 

one hundred videos, he uploaded 

finished videos onto the internet, 

he oversaw the company’s 

financial books, and he operated 

various business entities that 

were used to promote the 

business,” the DOJ said in a 

statement. 

The promises were made, 

despite Wolfe knowing Pratt 

was also operating a separate 

site, pornwikileaks.com, set up 

to expose the “true identities” 

of women appearing in the sex 

videos. 

“Even after Wolfe became 

aware of this, he and others 

continued to assure prospective 

models that no one would ever 

find out about their video shoot 

or learn their identity.”

Mapping sea ice has global impact 

CANTERBURY University 

researchers are behind 

pioneering airborne technology 

that will map and measure a 

vast stretch of Antarctic sea ice, 

revealing more about the critical 

role it plays in the global climate 

system. 

UC School of Earth and Environment 

Professor Wolfgang 

Rack, a glaciologist, said it will 

be the most comprehensive study 

of coastal sea ice in Antarctica 

ever carried out, and the resulting 

data will be internationally 

significant. 

“Using an aircraft survey, 

we plan to measure the largest 

stretches of Antarctic sea ice in 

history,” he said. 

“If we want to be confident 

in our predictions of sea ice 

trends and better understand the 

vital role it plays in a warming 

climate, we need more accurate 

information on the thickness of 

current coastal sea ice.” 

Rack and his team, which 

includes research scientist Dr 

Daniel Price, have been awarded 

a three-year $929,000 Marsden 

Fund grant from Royal Society 

Te Apārangi for the project. It is 

a collaboration between UC, Lincoln 

Agritech, the Alfred Wegener 

Institute for Polar and Marine 

Research in Germany, Australian 

Antarctic Division, NASA, and 

ETH Zurich University.

The survey will be carried 

out in late 2024 in the Ross Sea 

and Western Pacific areas of 

Antarctica using a fixed-wing 

DC3 aircraft. An ‘EM Bird’ – 

an electromagnetic induction 

device provided by a collaborator 

from AWI – will be suspended 

80 metres under the aircraft to 

measure the thickness of the ice 

below. 

For this project, it will be combined 

with a built-in snow radar, 

developed with collaborators at 

Lincoln Agritech and integrated 

with the EM Bird system at UC 

and AWI. In combination, the 

technology can simultaneously 

measure ice thickness and the 

depth of the snow layer on top. 

Said Rack: “For the first time 

we will be able to directly assess 

the thickness and volume 

of complex coastal sea ice. We 

theorise this type of ice is a 

major factor in the global climate 

system – if it is changing, then 

there will be big consequences 

for our planet.” 

Sea ice helps sustain Antarctic 

‘bottom water’, which is the 

deepest, coldest and densest 

ocean water. This bottom water 

helps remove carbon dioxide 

from the atmosphere, storing it 

at the ocean floor for a long time. 

It also helps circulate the world’s 

oceans. 

“The more sea ice is out there, 

the more Antarctic bottom water 

is created, so it’s a critical part of 

oceanic and atmospheric circulation 

with huge global impacts,” 

he said. 

Vast areas of Antarctic sea ice 

cover up to 20 million square kilometres 

in winter, reflecting sunlight 

and mitigating its warming 

effects on sea temperatures. 

Sea ice trends are poorly 

understood because satellites 

can only reliably map their area. 

Only a few thickness measurements 

are taken from the ground 

every year, and they cover a 

relatively small area. 

“Since the late 1970s, we’ve 

observed an increase in the area 

of coastal sea ice in Antarctica, 

which is the opposite of what one 

would expect,” Rack said. 

“Only very recently have we 

seen a decline, but also much 

more variability. We need to 

know more about the thickness 

of the ice and its overall mass to 

understand these changes.” 

The data collected will be used 

to develop a tailored satellitederived 

ice thickness product 

for Antarctica’s coastal region 

and will also provide observational 

datasets for computer 

simulations that will allow better 

forecasting.

TWO ROYAL New Zealand 

Air Force P-3K2 Orions have 

made their last flight over the 

city after nearly 60 years of 

service. 

The last pair of Orions fleet 

flew over the South Island in 

formation, setting out from 

RNZAF’s Woodbourne base in 

Blenheim on Tuesday. 

They were spotted over 

Christchurch about 11.50am. 

The surveillance planes first 

arrived in New Zealand in 

1966 and were operated by the 

No 5 squadron. The fleet of six

to locate hundreds of people 

missing at sea and drifting 

vessels. 

They were often the first

It also covers a large area 

– from near the mouth of 

the Hurunui River, across 

all of Banks Peninsula and 

12 miles out to sea. 

It has been busy recently, 

with five call-outs in January, 

assisting local boaties, 

swimmers and surfers who 

have got into difficulty. 

The organisation has 

about 30 volunteers who 

can respond to a call-out at 

any time. Its three vessels 

are equipped to handle 

almost all rescue missions. 

Coastguard Sumner also 

works closely with surf life 

saving clubs. 

It has a rich history, 

starting in 1898 with the 

first permanent rescue 

service and dedicated lifeboat, 

appropriately named 

Rescue. Despite the name 

change, Coastguard 

Sumner will retain strong 

connections to its heritage 

as Sumner Lifeboat, and 

will continue to promote 

its proud heritage.

Davis Cup singles players 

will be named tomorrow

NEW ZEALAND will confirm 

their two singles players 

tomorrow for the Davis Cup tie 

against Bulgaria at Wilding Park 

over the weekend. 

Team captain Kelly Evernden 

will chose from Rubin Statham, 

Ajeet Rai and KP Pannu ahead 

of the world group playoff 1. 

They will be joined by doubles 

specialists Michael Venus and 

Artem Sitak. 

Statham, who is world No 

454, has won 28 Davis Cup 

singles matches, more than any 

other New Zealander, and is 

likely to be named to play two 

of the singles rubbers. However, 

Rai (world No 455) and Pannu 

(world No 574) both impressed at 

the ASB Classic and its wildcard 

tournament. 

Rai defeated world No 95 Taro 

Daniel from Japan before losing 

in three sets to Brazilian Thiago 

Monteiro, while Pannu looked 

solid in the wildcard tournament 

but went down to eventual ASB 

Classic winner Richard Gasquet 

in the first round. 

Play will start at noon on 

Saturday with the first two 

singles rubbers, followed by the 

doubles and the reverse singles 

on Sunday. 

The tie will be a sell-out on 

both days, Tennis Canterbury

Rafter was a favourite with 

the ball kids that year (1993-94) 

when at the end of the tie, he 

stayed and hit with them. 

“I still have a letter from an 

Australian team captain John 

Newcombe thanking me for 

stringing the team’s rackets and 

saying the job I did was as good 

as anywhere in the world. That 

was special.”

individual score in club cricket 

history at the weekend. 

Jacobs (left) blitzed 11 sixes 

and 12 fours for Sydenham on 

his way to 178 off 138 balls 

against Old Boys’ Collegians. He 

surpassed the previous record 

of 169, held by Burnside West’s 


Sam Noster in the 2015/16 season. 

It was Jacobs third century 

of the season in the rain-affected 

47-over match. OBC won the 

toss and elected to bowl first, 

but faced a strong batting performance 

from Jacobs and Ryan 

Wallace (52 off 75 balls) who 

combined for a 191-run partnership. 

Jacobs was eventually run-out 

towards the end of the innings, 

as Sydenham finished on 315/5. 

In response, OBC began well 

with Australian import Dylan 

Hunter (104 off 89 balls) bringing 

up his first century for his 

new club. But Sydenham’s bowlers 

closed out the match quickly, 

taking OBC’s last six wickets for

helped New Zealand qualify for 

the under-17 FIFA World Cup in 

Peru in November.

part in the New Zealand team 

that won the Oceania under-17 

championships on Saturday after 

a nail-biting 1-0 win over New 

Caledonia, which also qualified 

for the World Cup. 

Murphy and Cole currently 

play for Christchurch United, 

while Cashmere Technical’s 

Sugahara and Foord are also 

products of the Christchurch 

United Academy. Their presence, 

along with former Cantabrian 

Luke Supyk, shows a big shift in 

national team selection. Most 

national squads over recent years 

included only one or two or no 

South Island players at all. 

The change reflects the 

hard work Christchurch clubs 

have put in to improve youth 

development. Former All White 

Aaron Clapham, who lives in the 

city, is also the current assistant 

of the under-17 side – and has 

helped identify talented local 

players. Murphy, Cole, Sugahara 

and Foord all featured in the 

final. Goalkeeper Foord claimed 

man of the match after pulling 

off several stunning saves after 

New Zealand was reduced to 10 

men for the final 20 minutes. 

Foord also won the golden 

glove for best goalkeeper and 

was named in the team of the 

tournament. Murphy was part 

of the epic defensive effort in the 

final minutes. “My immediate 

reaction was just run and hug 

my nearest teammate. I was just 

filled with joy and to celebrate 

something as big as the win with 

my new brothers was a very

me.” After narrowly beating New 

Caledonia 3-2 in their opening 

game, thanks to a hat-trick from

tournament. “Playing with the 

fern on my chest was one hell of 

an achievement, but that feeling 

of walking my team out and

is a feeling that will never 

leave me. I was unbelievably 

honoured and proud to do so,” 

said Murphy. The team then 

faced a well-organised Vanuatu 

in the quarter-finals, but won 

in the 90th-minute after Supyk 

converted a penalty. 

In the semis, New Zealand 

comfortably beat host nation Fiji 

4-1 to qualify for the upcoming 

under-17 World Cup then won 

the final to claim the trophy for 

the eighth time in a row. Murphy 

said the team had to dig deep in 

the final. “The boys worked superhard 

and put in shifts day-in-dayout 

on and off the pitch, so for me 

it was well deserved.”

Duff eyes up another national title

THE NEW Zealand Sprintcar 

Championship at Ruapuna 

Speedway this weekend has 

attracted 46 competitors – the 

second largest in the event’s 

52-year history. 

Former winner Jamie Duff has 

been somewhat inconsistent this 

summer, showing lightening fast 

pace but having a string of minor 

mechanical issues. Last weekend 

the Christchurch driver returned 

to form, finishing second in the 

New Zealand Sprintcar Grand 

Prix at Cromwell, but he is under 

no illusions how tough this 

weekend’s racing will be. 

The 32-year-old is keen to grab 

another national championship 

win, but said it’s a tough 

proposition. 

“You really need everything 

to go your way. The 10-lap heat 

races will be tough, and every 

point on offer is vital. One 

mechanical issue, an untimely 

flat tyre or getting caught up in 

someone else’s crash can make it 

a tough road into the finals, but 

we have found plenty of speed 

in the car, and with the next 

nationals in Christchurch being 

six or seven years away we really 

want to give this a good crack,” 

Duff said. 

A 30-year veteran, Canterbury 

speedway driver Dave Kerr has 

made the switch to sprintcars 

and is upbeat about taking part.

Said Kerr: “(Sprintcars) are 

big fields, they are big powerful 

cars to drive, and a hell of a buzz 

too. There is a real neat bunch of 

people involved in the class too. 

Most of my team were ready for 

a change and a challenge – this 

is it.” 

Early in his career, Kerr 

won the national minisprint 

championship before moving up 

into the powerful midget cars. 

He went on to become the most 

successful South Island driver in 

that section of all time. 

Ruapuna club president Rob 

Roxburgh is confident that 

despite only two South Islanders 

winning the championship in 

the past 37 years – Bruce Hobbs 

in 1986 and Duff in 2015 – there 

is enough ability in the mainland 

ranks to get onto the podium. 

One driver who has returned 

home after spending most of 

the summer racing in Auckland 

is Canterbury’s Matthew 

Leversedge. He says the 

northerners may not have the 

advantage they normally do. 

“The weather up north has 

made it a really disrupted 

campaign. We are rapt to be back 

at Ruapuna. I’m pretty familiar 

with how the track changes as 

the two nights of racing go on,” 

Leversedge said. 

Roxburgh said other 

Canterbury drivers who have 

showed great form recently 

include Caleb Baughan, Steve 

Duff, Jayden Dodge and Connor 

Rangi. 

“They are all young and fast. 

Several years ago Connor was 

the second top qualifier for the 

championship at Cromwell. He 

registers to his old hometown of 

Nelson but he’s put in plenty of 

laps at Ruapuna,” Roxburgh said. 

“I think he has the temperament 

to do well and he is being 

mentored by American Jonathan 

Allard. 

“He’s really talented. We know 

that Caleb and Steve won’t be 

left wondering. They will give it 

there all while Jayden was very 

unlucky to be stripped of third 

place in last weekend’s Grand 

Prix on a technical issue. I 

wouldn’t write these guys off.” 

Roxburgh said three years of 

planning has gone into making it 

a memorable occasion.

WeeK four: upping the pace 

This week we will step it up a bit more. The beginners group will progress to the stage that most of the walking is replaced by 

slow jogging and the intermediate group are starting to incorporate some efforts in zone 2. Remember that zone 1 is perceived 

as an easy effort which you can maintain for very long periods of time. In zone 2 you will get slightly puffed but you can still have a 

conversation. You go from jogging in zone 1 to a proper running movement in zone 2 with the main difference being that zone 

1 has a slower rhythm, staying low to the ground where as zone 2 brings extra spring in your step combined with an increase in 

leg turnover (stride rate). The intermediate group introduces zone 2 pace as 2 minute repetitions alternated by 2 minute easy 

jogging. Zone 2 to 3 will be the recommended pace for the City to Surf event for the intermediate group while the beginners 

will mainly stay in zone 1 and 2. 

The difference between walking and jogging is not only decided by the rhythm of the movement but also how and where you 

land your feet. When jogging most efficiently you land on your mid-foot under the centre of gravity of the body, which, in the 

upright position, is located in the pelvis just behind the midline of the body. With a slight forward lean of the body you can use 

gravity to pull you forward while your legs keep you upright and push you in a forward direction. Walking is done in a more 

upright position and most of us land on our heel first and roll over the outside of our foot before pushing off with our forefoot. It 

helps to keep your core (lower abdomen, back, pelvis and hips) well supported by pushing your pelvis slightly forward. This will 

stop you from “sitting” and over striding.

3. What is the right intensity to train at? The 

good thing about the programme is that all 

your runs will be done at submaximal pace, 

also called conversation pace. That means a 

pace where you can still talk. If you can’t talk 

you are going too fast and you are likely to 

come to a grinding halt sooner or later.

fluids during exercise is generally not 

required until you start to exceed 90 minutes

of energy planning where we want to 

live, what we want to achieve during our 

lifetimes, but we don’t give much time or 

thought to what we would like to happen 

at the end of our lives. 

If you have a major health event that 

deprives you of the ability to make your 

wishes known to your family or to the 

health professionals responsible for your

Under the Code of Health and 

Disability Services Consumers’ Rights

Suzuki with European flair and finesse 

When you think of Suzuki 

motor vehicles of all shapes and 

sizes, you immediately think of 

their origin from Japan. 

Well, all models are 

designed and engineered in 

Japan, but Suzuki has a global 

manufacturing infrastructure 

that sees it source variants from a 

wide periphery. 

The Suzuki S-Cross is built in 

europe, hungary to be exact, and 

I must say it is all quality and feels 

just so nice to be in. 

The S-Cross has just entered a 

new lifecycle, its shape is bolder, 

sharper and has a lot more 

presence on the road. It has also 

received interior attention that 

makes it completely state-of-theart, 

it is modern fresh and fitted 

with all of the character you want 

when buying a new-age SuV. 

I’ve long been a fan of the 

S-Cross, early in its production it 

arrived with the 1.6-litre engine 

out of the Swift Sport and it was a 

real cracker, I remember vividly a 

trip I took in it to Queenstown to 

watch an annual Gibbston Valley 

rock concert. 

In recent years the S-Cross has 

shared its four-cylinder engine 

with others in the Suzuki line-up, 

it’s a 1.4-litre turbocharged unit 

that first appeared here in Baleno. 

This engine is also noteworthy, 

it’s a strong unit at 103kW and 

220nm, but its biggest claim to 

fame is that of its economy. 

Well that’s no surprise, Suzuki 

has long been revered for its 

ability to produce feisty, free-revving 

engines that also sip fuel in 

acceptable amounts in this age 

where costs to fill up are forever 

on everyone’s mind. In part, the 

small capacity engines Suzuki 

build so very well hark back to 

the company’s motor-cycle heritage, 

gleaning decent horsepower 

out of small cylinders. 

even though the S-Cross’ engine 

likes to work freely, it doesn’t 

need to be hunting towards 

the top end. one of the major 

benefits from today’s turbocharging 

technology is the ability to 

produce maximum torque from 

low in the rev band. 

In the S-Cross’ case peak power 

is developed at just 5500rpm, 

while torque is maximised 

between 1500 and 4000rpm. 

SUZUKI S-CROSS: Fresh face for 2023. 

These figures mean the engine 

doesn’t need to work hard, it is 

a sweet unit that is honest and 

quiet. 

Acceleration is ushered in willingly 

and swiftly when required 

(0-1000km/h in 8.8sec) but such 

is the sultry way the turbo boost 

arrives it’s hard to tell there is 

forced induction. 

Drive is channelled through a 

traditional six-speed automatic 

transmission, if you want to be 

involved in the gearing process 

there is a paddle-shift sequential 

system. 

There are also variable drive 

modes, there are no surprises 

here, they are snow, normal and 

sport, the latter livens throttle 

response considerably. 

In terms of fuel use, the Suzuki 

claims 6.2-litre per 100km on a 

combined cycle average, which 

was very close to the 7l/100km 

figure showing constantly on 

the trip computer. At 100km/h 

the engine turns over slowly at 

1750rpm in sixth gear providing 

a 5l/100km instantaneous return. 

The evaluation car was what 

Suzuki describes as an All-Grip 

variant, it tops the line-up at 

$41,990. Put simply, that means 

drive is carried to all four-wheels, 

normally it’s the front wheels that 

do the work, power sent rearwards 

when traction up front is 

compromised.

are such that the suspension is 

firm enough to keep the tyres in 

constant contact with the surface 

when undulations off-road are

I covered more distance in 

the S-Cross that I had intended, 

showing up to 280km on the 

odometer when I returned it to 

the dealership. Most of that was 

on highway travel and I felt fresh 

and relaxed after a long inland 

journey. 

When spending a lot of time 

inside the car you become quite 

familiar with the layout of the 

controls and the specification 

built into the vehicle. I can report 

the S-Cross wants for nothing, it 

gets all the modern kit for comfort, 

convenience and safety. 

Suzuki builds cars for the 

masses and it sells well here. I’m 

sure with its dramatic new looks 

it will continue to lure those who 

want something just that little bit 

different from their SuV.
