Keynote 1: Open the Box! Challenges in the Smart Home
Room : Despax (16:30-17:30)
Andre Bottaro, Orange Labs, France.
Keynote Abstract:
A new world of applications emerges in the home from the growing variety of sensors and actuators potentially
available. Several application domains are considered, e.g., security, energy efficiency, comfort, ambient assisted
living, multimedia communication.
However, the Smart Home market has still not taken off yet. This market remains divided into niche markets having
dedicated device manufacturers with proprietary solutions. Industrial partnerships are also built on each type of
application separately without embracing the big picture.
Several actors propose to exploit a new technical and economic opportunity to catalyze this market. This opportunity
is based on the re-use of the infrastructure that telecom operators have deployed for today classic Internet and TV
services. It raises technical and business challenges: Telecom operators have to open their home infrastructure to
third-party applications while guaranteeing application security and consistency to all home business actor using this
infrastructure.
Several technical disruptions are expected at several levels of the home telecom infrastructure. The main challenge
lies in the deployment and maintenance of a software environment embedded on an Internet gateway and open to
third party applications. Other technical issues remain on:
the application consistency based on heterogeneous sensor networks,
the homogeneous device management of numerous devices of various types,
the adapted remote user interfaces to be deployed on shared screens at home,
and the expected Home Application Store that will address the complex user home context and several device
targets.
The talk describes the smart home market and goes through technical challenges. It then shows innovation tracks
carried out by R&D labs worldwide.
Short biography:
Andre Bottaro has been working on several Research and Industrial projects in Home, Building and
City environments for the Orange labs since 2003. He is presently in charge of the Machine-to-Machine
Research Program of the Group, which shows great challenges in the integration of communication and
processing capabilities in constrained devices. His work mainly addresses service dynamic composition
in distributed embedded applications. His work is visible through publications and patents. He carried out
actions in standardization organizations, e.g., lead the Device Management Working Committee of the
UPnP Forum, lead standardization actions at ISO/IEC, and proposed new innovation tracks to the OSGi Alliance. He
holds a PhD from Grenoble University where he worked under the direction of Richard S. Hall and Philippe Lalanda,
an MSc from Telecom Paris, France, and an engineering degree from France's prestigious Ecole Polytechnique.

Keynote 2: Is Ethernet the rising star for in-vehicle networks?
Room : Despax (11:00-12:00)
Josef Noebauer, Continental Automotive GmbH, Germany.
Keynote Abstract:
The motivation of the automotive industry for investigations around the introduction of Ethernet as in-vehicle network
will be explained. These are e.g. to fulfill the continuously rising communication demands and because it has a very
high market penetration. However the automotive industry has strong requirements with respect to reliability; hence
the introduction of new technologies is commonly done in an evolutionary approach.
Continental is already working on the introduction of Ethernet as new in-vehicle network and some of the aspects that
are investigated, like Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC), Real-Time constraints and energy consumption will be
presented.
However several aspects that have not be the first thoughts like tool infrastructure, etc. are not fully addressed so far,
but need to be solved for a successful introduction.
An outlook on the short-, mid- and long-term future of in-vehicle networks will be given from the perspective of an
automotive supplier.
Short biography:
Manager at Continental Automotive GmbH and senior expert for the cross divisional usage of the
automotive network technologies MOST, FlexRay and Ethernet. In this role he is managing Continental’s
activities around the introduction of Ethernet as in-vehicle network. He is working at Continental
Automotive GmbH, Regensburg, Germany since 1998. In his previous business activities he was
involved in the development of vehicle system architectures, project management and development of
Infotainment Systems.
He started his professional career in 1995 in the area of software development for mobile phones at AEG Mobile
Communication, Ulm, Germany.
He graduated as electrical engineer in the area of telecommunications in 1995 at the University of Applied Sciences,
Keynote 3: Challenges of Wireless Communications in Industrial Systems
Room : Despax (12:00-13:00)
Stefan Svensson, ABB, Sweden.
Keynote Abstract:
The presentation will discuss challenges of wireless communication in industrial systems with examples from the
ABB portfolio of wireless products.
Industry customers want one standards but the dilemma is that no existing wireless radio system can satisfy all
requirements simultaneously and the same medium is used by all wireless systems for radio transmissions: the free
air space which surrounds them. In short, wireless solutions have to co-exist.
Short biography:
Stefan Svensson holds a M Sc in Electrical Engineering from the Technical University of Lund. He joined
ABB in Sweden in 2001 as researcher at ABB Corporate Research developing embedded systems for
different kinds of field level communication. From 2005 until 2008 Stefan worked as the coordinator for
ABB research in Wireless and Mobility. Between 2008 and 2010 he worked as a group leader at the
Acreo Research Institute in the area of innovative electronics. He returned to ABB in 2011 to take on the
position of manager for the industrial communication program. Industrial communication in the ABB
definition includes wired and wireless communication, device integration as well as embedded systems development.
As program manager Stefan Svensson manages a portfolio of around 40 projects (~62 people) and is responsible for
the ABB strategy in the area. The people working in the program is located in five countries, in addition to Sweden
also in India, Germany, Switzerland and Norway.
