Traffic will be reduced to one<br />
lane heading northwest.<br />
Kevin Zhou and Sherry Che,<br />
who live on the western corner<br />
of the roundabout, have put up<br />
with vehicles crashing through<br />
their fence multiple times in the<br />
past five years.<br />
At the time of the last<br />
accident Zhou said the whole<br />
house shook and walls were<br />
taken out. He said he thought<br />
the roundabout<br />
was poorly<br />
designed.<br />

That will prevent two cars<br />
going through the roundabout<br />
at one time, which has been<br />
the cause of three of the five<br />
accidents, said Moore.<br />
It also means cars won’t<br />
be able to drive through at<br />
significant speeds.<br />
“I have spoken to the<br />
residents and they agree the<br />
solution makes sense,” Moore<br />
said.<br />

Wright said, once approved,<br />
the intention is to complete<br />
the work by the end of this<br />
financial year.<br />
There were also two similar<br />
accidents at the Whincops Rd<br />
roundabout in 2018, Moore<br />
said. The city council made<br />
changes to that roundabout at<br />
the time. In the five years<br />
since there have been no<br />
further cars through fences<br />
there, he said.<br />
“We have asked staff what<br />
those changes were. If they were<br />
similar to what is proposed<br />
at Hamill Rd that will give us<br />
even more confidence that the<br />
proposed solution is the right<br />
one,” he said.<br />

Growing the urban forest<br />
A FUTURE focused plan<br />
outlining how Christchurch can<br />
grow its urban forest has been<br />
released for public feedback.<br />
The Ōtautahi-Christchurch<br />
Draft Urban Forest Plan <strong>2023</strong><br />
sets out how to grow the tree<br />
canopy and sustain a thriving<br />
urban forest with healthy,<br />
diverse and resilient trees located<br />
on both public and private land.<br />
The latest survey results<br />
show had the city’s tree canopy<br />
had reduced from 15% to 13%<br />
between 2015-2019.<br />

communities<br />
equally, with<br />
some suburbs<br />
having more<br />
trees than<br />
others. We want<br />
to prioritise<br />
neighbourhoods<br />
which are lacking trees to ensure<br />
equitable tree coverage for all<br />
communities.<br />
“We want to grow our urban<br />
forest as quickly and sustainably<br />
as possible. Currently we plant<br />
approximately 400 trees in our<br />
parks per year of which 50 per<br />
cent are new and 50 per cent are<br />
replacing trees we have removed.<br />
“This coming planting season<br />
we’ll be planting about 2500<br />
additional trees. This number<br />
will steadily increase over<br />
coming years towards a goal of<br />
8000 trees per year. As part of<br />
this we’ll be looking at how we<br />
can balance the needs of our<br />
community, when using our<br />
parks, with prioritising growing<br />
our urban forest.”<br />
Actions to protect trees on<br />
private land have also been<br />
identified in the plan.<br />
“There is currently limited<br />
mechanisms to protect trees<br />
on private land. Growing and<br />
nurturing our urban forest will<br />
require continued support from<br />
a mix of sources, including<br />
developers, property and<br />
business owners,” said Rutledge.<br />
“As a council we’ll also be<br />
investigating ways we can<br />
incentivise and support private<br />
land owners to retain and plant<br />
more trees”.<br />

Sister city<br />
group visits<br />
from Seattle<br />
REPRESENTATIVES from<br />
Christchurch’s sister city, Seattle,<br />
have been welcomed by the mayor.<br />
The relationship between the<br />
two city’s stretches back 42 years<br />
but it has been 11 years since an<br />
official group last visited from<br />
Seattle.<br />
The city on the west coast of the<br />
United States in Washington has a<br />
population of about 740,000. The<br />
14-strong contingent was formally<br />
welcomed by Mayor Phil Mauger<br />
during the city council meeting.<br />
The last sister city visit from<br />
Seattle was in 2012 after the<br />
Christchurch earthquakes. The<br />
people of Seattle donated an<br />
ambulance to St John to help with<br />
the city’s recovery.<br />
The group includes members of<br />
the Seattle City Council and the<br />
Seattle-Christchurch Sister City<br />
Association. For the first time a<br />
First Nations tribal representative<br />
is also visiting on behalf of a tribal<br />
group from the Seattle area.<br />
A member of the group, Seattle<br />
councillor Sara Nelson, has a<br />
special connection to the city.<br />
She spent her honeymoon here<br />
in 2002, and says the two cities<br />
have a lot in common. “We both<br />
live on subduction zones and the<br />
city of Seattle benefitted greatly<br />
from the learnings following<br />
your earthquakes and how you’ve<br />
rebuilt your city and become more<br />
resilient from it,” Nelson said.<br />

Taxi subsidy for disabled welcomed<br />

THE HĀPAI Foundation and<br />
musician Eddie Low have<br />
welcomed a new subsidy to<br />
help disabled people in the<br />
community become more<br />
independent.<br />
Foundation chairman Bob<br />
Shearing said a big step has<br />
been made towards this goal<br />
with the Government’s approval<br />
to permanently grant a 75 per<br />
cent subsidy for Total Mobility<br />
customers using taxis.<br />
Shearing said the<br />
Christchurch-based charity,<br />
which promotes the Hāpai<br />
access card, welcomed<br />
the Total Mobility scheme<br />
announcement to subsidise taxis<br />
for disabled people who cannot<br />
independently use regular public<br />
transport services all the time.<br />
“The increased subsidy with<br />
the Total Mobility card is a huge<br />
plus for those with disabilities,”<br />
Shearing said.<br />
“Access to affordable and<br />
accessible transport plays a vital<br />
role in people’s participation in<br />
society and personal well-being.<br />
Enabling people with disabilities<br />
to still have full, enjoyable, and<br />
productive lives is a win-win for<br />
everyone.”<br />

Christchurch singer Eddie Low<br />
has been visually impaired all<br />
his life and is the foundation’s<br />
performing arts ambassador.<br />
His song I am Me is the<br />
foundation’s theme song –<br />
and was written for people<br />
with intellectual and physical<br />
disabilities. Low asks people for<br />
acceptance, even though they<br />
are“different”.<br />
Low, now 79 and still<br />
performing on stage, frequently<br />
uses taxis. He says the more<br />
popular, cheaper alternatives,<br />
such as Uber that rely on phone<br />
apps for bookings and tracking<br />
have become commonplace but<br />
do not suit most people who are<br />
visually impaired.<br />
“The Total Mobility card<br />
subsidy is another tool which<br />
helps me to stay independent, for<br />
as long as possible,” Low said.<br />

Snacks fit for the schoolyard<br />

are some suggestions to<br />
help prepare a healthy<br />
breakfast and fill up their<br />
lunchboxes<br />
Muesli slice<br />
Ingredients<br />
Makes 24 slices<br />
2 cups rolled oats<br />
1 cup wholemeal flour<br />
½ cup desiccated coconut<br />
2 tsp cinnamon<br />
¾ cup sultanas or other mixed<br />
fruit<br />
½ cup canola oil<br />
½ cup honey<br />
2 bananas, mashed<br />
Directions<br />
Preheat oven to 180<br />
deg C.<br />
Line a slice tray with non-stick<br />
baking paper.<br />
In a mixing bowl, add the<br />
dry ingredients and mix<br />
through.<br />
Add the remaining ingredients<br />
and mix with a wooden spoon<br />
until fully combined.<br />
Place mixture into a lined slice<br />
tray and press down firmly.<br />
Cook for 30 mins until<br />
golden.<br />
Allow to cool before cutting<br />

pudding<br />
Ingredients<br />
Serves 4<br />
2 cups coconut cream<br />
½ cup chia seeds (black or white)<br />
1 tsp vanilla extract<br />
1-2 Tbsp coconut sugar or maple<br />
syrup<br />

2 cups fresh or frozen berries<br />
2 Tbsp raw cacao powder, 6<br />
prunes<br />
Dried fruit such as<br />
apricots, dates, cranberries, seeds<br />
and nuts<br />
Directions<br />
Pour the coconut cream into<br />
a large bowl, add the chia seeds,<br />
vanilla extract and sweetener.<br />
Whisk together until combined.<br />
Pour into a sealable container<br />
and store in the fridge (ideally<br />
overnight).<br />
Whole-wheat and dulse<br />
crackers with za’atar<br />
Ingredients<br />
Makes 40<br />
Time 30min<br />
185g (1¼ cups) whole wheat<br />
flour<br />
2 Tbsp ground flaxseeds<br />
(linseeds)<br />
2 Tbsp za’atar<br />
2 tsp rapadura sugar<br />
2 tsp dried dulse flakes (see note)<br />
A pinch of fine salt<br />
80ml (⅓ cup) extra-virgin<br />
coconut oil, melted and cooled<br />
60ml (¼ cup) water<br />
Black sesame seeds to garnish<br />
Directions<br />
Preheat the oven to 180 deg C.<br />
In a large bowl, combine the<br />
flour, flaxseeds, za’atar, sugar,<br />
dulse and salt, and mix well.<br />
Add the coconut oil and<br />
use your fingers to rub the<br />
ingredients until they are all<br />
coated in the oil and start to<br />
clump together. Add the water<br />
and bring the dough together<br />
into a ball. It should clump and<br />
hold together but not be sticky.<br />
Add a little more water if the<br />
dough is too dry or flour if it is<br />
too sticky.<br />
Place a sheet of parchment<br />
paper on the kitchen bench.<br />
Take half the dough, place it<br />
in the middle of the paper and<br />
cover with another sheet of<br />
parchment paper. Roll out the<br />
dough until it is the thickness of<br />
a coin (about 2mm).<br />
Remove the top sheet of paper<br />
and sprinkle over the sesame<br />
seeds and a little salt. Return the<br />
top sheet and roll again to press<br />
the seeds and salt into the<br />
dough. Remove the top sheet<br />
and transfer the bottom sheet,<br />
along with the dough, to a<br />
baking tray.<br />
Score the dough into 20 or<br />
so squares and prick well with<br />
a fork. Repeat with the second<br />
batch of dough.<br />
Bake until golden, about 15-20<br />
minutes.<br />
Allow to cool a little before<br />
cutting along the score marks.<br />
The crackers will store well for<br />
a couple of weeks in a sealed<br />
container in a cupboard.<br />
Note: Dulse is a red seaweed<br />
that is available dried as whole<br />
leaves or in flakes. This recipe<br />
calls for the latter.<br />
