4 Thursday February 23 2023 ITM NEW ZEALAND SAIL GRAND PRIX CHRISTCHURCH SAILGP’s LONG-AWAITED NEW ZEALAND DEBUT In a few short weeks, SailGP will be hitting the shores of Whakaraupō, Lyttelton Harbour for the inaugural ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix | Christchurch 18 - 19 March. Thousands of fans are set to witness heart-pumping action and near misses just metres from the shoreline at Te Nukutai o Tapoa, Naval Point. GETTING AROUND: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW If you managed to secure tickets to the event, the best way to get to Lyttelton will be via official event shuttles. Shuttles will depart from the city centre live site, located opposite Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre each day, and return to Te Pae after racing. Additionally, SailGP tickets include free access to Metro buses and ferries across Christchurch to get to and from the shuttle bus location on the date of your ticket. Public access to Lyttelton will be limited with road closures and restrictions in place from 12pm - 6pm Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 March, with entry to Lyttelton blocked from Sumner and Governors Bay, and there will be no access to Lyttelton via Tunnel Road at Port Hills Road. Between the controlled period, only emergency vehicles, official event vehicles (buses and branded shuttles), taxis and vehicles with a clearly-displayed pass will be able to access Lyttelton. Lyttelton residents and businesses will be able to access their homes and workplaces during the controlled period via Bridle Path Road on both days using an allocated vehicle access pass, distributed via mail to all affected households. Cycle access to Lyttelton will not be affected by the restrictions and at all times traffic will be able to leave Lyttelton via the Tunnel, Governors Bay Road and Evans Pass Road. Emergency vehicles will be able to pass through road closures at all times, as will public buses. MISSED OUT ON TICKETS? HERE’S HOW TO WATCH The ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix Live Site powered by Enable will screen live racing on both days of the event (18-19 March), with some programming on Friday. The site is located at the Green between Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre and Cathedral Square. For fans tuning in from home, racing will be broadcast live on Sky Sport NZ and free-to-air on Three and ThreeNow. WANT TO KNOW MORE? South Brighton’s Skye Trist was once again a standout in the U17 category, winning the board race, surf race, ski race, run swim run, and iron events, as well as four team and relay events. Her board rescue teammate, Matilda Nolan, also impressed over the two days. She was in the winning team in five events in both the U17 and U19 categories, including the U17 board rescue with Trist. Smith said the weekend was a “great event” in the lead-up to the TSB New Zealand surf life saving championships on March 9-12, also at New Brighton. CHAMPIONS: South Brighton was awarded the top overall club at the southern region surf life saving championships. South Brighton dominates “We had some really great conditions for an awesome weekend of competition at New Brighton,” Smith said. Waimairi finished on 126 points in fourth place, while Brighton ended in seventh (68) and hosts New Brighton in thirteenth (24). The completion of the Canterbury surf life saving championships, where South Brighton leads the club points table, will take place this Friday with canoe racing. There are also plans to provide support to local businesses and community groups by promoting the work they do. Hill and Burrows have realised their vision with support from Wellbeing New Brighton, Renew Brighton, the Ministry of Social Development, Housing First, The Loft and the Christchurch Methodist Mission. Each of those organisations will have a strong presence at the centre, Hill said. Collaboration will be at the core of providing a safe, welcoming space that also provides a platform for ‘‘greater New Brighton to be showcased,” she said. “The result is exciting.” •The New Brighton Information Centre will be officially launched with a community event on March 2 at 11am. The centre will be open from March 6, Monday to Friday 10am-2pm, and Saturday and Sunday 10am-1pm.
