History
After World War II, the nation found itself facing a mood of deep-seated
social segregation it could no longer tolerate or afford. Yet the South, confidently
W. D. Morrison, President
Horace Sudduth, Vice President
W. H. Hollins, Treasurer
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF
REAL ESTATTE BROKERS
proclaimed itself to be the new plus ultra (uppermost limits) of Southern tolerance. Thus, was born the
Civil Rights movement- a period of the most difficult but necessary struggle to topple the crumbling
walls segregation had erected between Americans who had fought- and died together.
The postwar years indeed gave African Americans inspiration, confidence, strength and hope for a
better America. The United Nations had been formed, and Ralph J. Bunche had become the United
Nations Division Trustee. African Americans were gaining better paying jobs, and the Supreme Court
had finally passed a ruling that restrictive covenants and private agreement to exclude persons of
designated race from the ownership of real property were not enforceable under the law.
Although the lives of African Americans were now changing for the good, and a few victories had
been won, schools were still segregated under the “separate but equal” theory- and equal housing
had yet to become a reality. This is what drove the men and women who met in Tampa, Florida, on the
sweltering night of July 29, 1947, to form the National Association of Real Estate Brokers- NAREB.
These twelve pioneers, one woman and eleven men hailing from seven states across the country are
NAREB’s recognized founders.
Nannie Black, Detroit, MI
Macco Crutcher, Detroit, MI
Carleton Gains, Detroit, MI
W. D. Morrison, Jr., Detroit MI
O. B. Cobbins, Jackson, MS W. H. Hollins, Birmingham, AL
George W. Powell, Jacksonville, FL J. R. Taylor, Miami, FL
F. Henry Williams, Jacksonville, FL Horace Sudduth, Cincinnati, OH
J. W. Sanford, Oklahoma City, OK A. Maceo Smith, Dallas, TX
On this night, these people dedicated themselves to fair housing for all. They began by electing
temporary officers as follows:
Word soon spread, and NAREB's first convention was held at the Convention Hall
in Atlantic City, NJ, on July 19-20, 1948. It was a resounding success-a moment of
synergy when men and women across the country were able to come together to
voice their opinions as one- and to take a stand against inequity and injustice.
Since then, NAREB and its REALTISTS® have gone on to win victory after victory in
support of equal housing opportunities for all. We are an association proud of our past,
relentless in our struggle, and 100% dedicated to the REALTIST® creed-
Democracy in Housing.
Greetings REALTISTS, Partners, and Conference Attendees!
When I joined NAREB in 2005, I never dreamed that I would one day be in a
position to work so closely with its leadership team. With a history in the real
estate, brokerage and banking sectors, I’ve always been vested helping others
attain the dream of homeownership, but I felt an even deeper sense of
commitment to its mission and values when I became NAREB’s Executive
Director last year. I also felt a deeper sense of urgency to make sure that we
never, for one minute, lose sight of our essential purpose.
The housing industry is in constant flux, and for REALTISTS® to make a lasting
impact on achieving housing equity through our ‘Five Pillar Strategy,’ we need to
be nimble, opportunistic, undaunted, and astute in building local and national
relationships; leading and participating advocacy efforts; serving and educating
our REALTISTS® and Consumers; and expanding our network.
This year’s Midwinter Conference is designed to ensure that you have a full
understanding of the challenges that face us and how to meet them. Building
Black wealth through homeownership is an important step in creating
intergenerational stability, strong communities and a more equitable nation.
Each of us understands this, but to be more effective, we all need to continually
sharpen our skill sets.
With this last point in mind, find ways to interact with other attendees as much
as possible; build new relationships; share your perspectives and thoughts; and
foster trust among us so that we can count on each other to get the job done! Be
sure to stay in touch with each other after the conference, and keep in mind the
following quote as you move forward throughout the year.
“Together we are stronger; together we are unbroken; together we can do anything.” – Unknown
With excitement and optimism for an impactful year ahead,
Greetings REALTISTS®, Partners, and Conference Attendees!
Let this be a year of unprecedented achievement!! As REALTISTS®, our
charge has always been to make sure that our messages are delivered with
bold clarity. We take every opportunity to ‘drive home’ our ‘Democracy in
Housing’ agenda! We are visionary and we are intrepidly resilient! And
because of that, I am filled with much enthusiasm for the year that lies
ahead!
to make sure that we never lose sight of our essential purpose.
For 75 years, NAREB has made tremendous strides throughout the
decades, but the work continues to be a frustrating, uphill path, and we will
not stop until housing equity becomes a trusted reality! Building Black
Wealth is an important step in creating intergenerational stability, strong
communities and a more equitable nation. Let’s pledge to share our
perspectives, support each other, and move forward on our unified
purpose.
Be sure to find ways to interact with other attendees as much as possible;
NAACP Image Award-winner and People’s Choice Award-winner, was
born on May 24, 1969 in the small town of Clinton, South Carolina. He
began working towards his acting career at a young age by studying at
the First All Children’s Theater, which was an off-Broadway repertory
theater company. He later attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School
of Music & Art and Performing Arts in New York City. Payne continued his
education and training at Howard University in Washington, DC.
Payne is best known for his recurring roles as Theo Huxtable’s best friend
“Cockroach” on the ever popular and classic NBC hit series, The Cosby Show and as “Cole Brown”
on the FOX network TV series Martin. Payne stays on top of his career by not allowing himself to be
stereotyped or pigeon-holed. He continues to display his versatility on screen by playing roles such
as Reynaldo St. James, on the popular BET series The Game, to renowned producer L.A. Reid in
VH1’s TLC biopic. He can currently be seen on the Nickelodeon Network TV series, Tyler Perry’s
Young Dylan and in the feature film “Strange Love” streaming on Amazon Prime, which he also
directed. He has directed and produced music videos, web series and short films, all while
continuing to showcase his stand-up comedy in numerous cities across the country.
Payne has remained relevant amongst his peers by his continued pursuit of excellence. Aside from
being on the big screen, Payne’s commitment to community enrichment and charitable
organizations is never ending. His advice to young aspiring actors & professionals: "Perseverance is
the hard work you do after you get tired of doing the hard work you already did.”
