It’s a bit nervewracking to be honest, we’ve seen the set lists of all the bands. It’s us then all these Kiwi legends really, so it is a bit nerve-racking to know these people are listening to us from back stage, waiting to go on.” Anderson said sharing the stage with musicians who have decades of experience in the industry will be both “exciting” and scary. “A lot of these people have been in the music industry for 20 to 40 years. It’s intimidating but also very exciting to be able to get that sort of exposure,” he said. After Rockquest, the group decided to change their name to Zephyr. Bass player Scarlett Robson, 17, (CGHS) said the members were never really happy with the old moniker: “We wanted to freshen our image,” she said. Cawood, 17, said they had always planned to change their name. “When we came up with the name (The Jehts) we quickly decided on it, but we wanted to expand a bit so decided a name change was probably the best idea.” Rockquest focuses on GIG: Reuben Anderson, Cleo Cavell, Scarlett Robson and Mya Cawood (inset) at The Bower last Sunday. PHOTOS: GEOFF SLOAN songwriting and musicianship, which prompted them to write three original songs – The Relay, She Ain’t Got No Shame and Someplace New. Said Anderson: “The way we’ve written our originals is that I’d come up with some sort of riff or idea then I’d take it to the band and collectively we’d all work on that riff and create different sections and Cleo would add lyrics and vocal melodies and we’d all work together on structure from the original idea.” The band has similar musical influences. “Led Zeppelin, we really dig The Doors and Jimi Hendrix as well. Just that classic 70s psychedelic rock,” Anderson said. He has been playing guitar for two years and was influenced by some of the great rock guitarists. “I just fell in love with that sort of guitar work. You know, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan – all these amazing guitar legends, their music was so interesting.” They are all in year 13 and are under the wing of Selwyn Sounds director David Parlane. Cavell said Parlane’s industry contacts have come in handy. “It came about through a family friend, Debbie Haywood. “She talked to (Parlane) and said we were a young rock group that were trying to promote ourselves and he was looking for a group to work with so we met through that.” Cavell was the last to join the band. “Thankfully we all just ended up liking the same music, we never have to argue about what style of music we play,” she said. Robson has been playing bass for four years. “For a few years before we started the band, we all separately had an interest in the same music. We just came together and it worked out well that we loved to play it as well,” she said. The band plays at The Bower in North New Brighton every Sunday afternoon, which means they need to increase their repertoire of cover songs. Thursday March 2 2023 5 Yarham makes junior White Sox CHALLENGE: Halswell’s Sophie Yarham is one of nine Canterbury softball players set to travel to the United States in June with two Junior White Sox teams. • By Jaime Cunningham HALSWELL’S SOPHIE Yarham is one of nine Canterbury players named in two Junior White Sox teams set to travel to a United States tournament in June. Sophie has been selected alongside McKenzie Bailey-McDowell, Caitlin Henderson, Kaiyah Ratu, Sydelle Sipiki-Samuelu and Trinity Mackley-Flutey (non-travelling reserve) in the under 18 team, while Maddison Parsons, Katerina Sumner, and Shyla de Latour (non-travelling reserve) have been selected in the under 16 side. About 250 teams are expected to attend the Top Gun invitational tournament in Kansas City, Missouri, including the New Zealand teams named last week. Sophie has travelled to Australia and Indonesia for softball tournaments before, but the 16-year-old said going to the country known as the “home of softball” makes the upcoming trip more exciting than previous ones. “This trip will expose us to some great softball against challenging competition which will allow us to grow as individuals,” she said. “I can’t wait to head over to America and embrace the whole experience.” Former White Sox captain and Olympian Kiri Shaw will resume her role as head coach of the Junior White Sox, but will be joined by new assistant coach, Carley Ratu. “You would have to say, American girls’ softball is the best in the world and we are lucky enough to get this opportunity to see and compete against the best,” Shaw said. “This whole experience is going to be massive, I can’t think of anything better than throwing ourselves into the firing line, so to speak.” The tournament is the start of the Junior White Sox’s preparations for the first world cup regional qualifers next year, ahead of the 2025 U18 softball world cup. City council transport operations manager Stephen Wright said the event will focus on getting to school safely. “Walking or wheeling to school helps reduce our carbon emissions and keeps our kids safe with a reduction of vehicle traffic at the school gate,” he said. It also shows children they can enjoy the health benefits of exercise, he said. There will be prizes during the week, including bikes, scooters and helmets. “We want to show children that there’s a bunch of alternatives to taking the car to and from school and ones that can be a lot of fun,” said Wright.
