Hello & welcome!
Hooray it’s spring! As we slowly emerge from the
winter months, mother nature is awakening from her
Getting a dementia
diagnosis means
getting the right
support
If you or someone close to you is
experiencing significant memory loss,
confusion or language difficulties,
it’s a good idea to visit your GP for an
assessment.
Getting a diagnosis of dementia can provide a
better understanding of the condition and what
to expect, and a timely diagnosis can help you
make important decisions about treatment,
support and care.
Symptoms can include:
Memory loss - asking the same question over
again, forgetting recent conversations or events
and names of people; struggling to recognise
people; taking longer to recall information.
Language and communication - difficulties
following a conversation or finding the right
word for something/
Mood changes: difficulty controlling emotion,
becoming unusually anxious, irritable, sad
or frightened, losing interest in things and
personality changes.
Behavioural changes: can include confusion,
difficulty concentrating, planning and
organising, struggling to make decisions,
solve problems or follow a series of steps
(such as cooking a meal).
A diagnosis can seem daunting but help is
available. Alzheimer’s Society has produced a
new symptom checker, developed with leading
clinicians, which can be printed off and taken to
the GP to help people explain their symptoms
and get the support they need.
The King’s Church Amersham Lionesses
football has become much more than a
The excitement continues to grow following
England’s success at the UEFA Women’s
Champions League in 2022 and the Women’s
Super League (WSL) attracts the world’s best
With girls coming together from a number
formed, skills have developed, and they could
not be prouder of the effort the girls display
every week – even when temperatures have
hovered around zero!
Saturdays a month, with training at Hervines
COMMUNITY NEWS
Lots of fun on offer
Did you know your local Scout Group is
looking for some volunteers?
We are looking for more volunteers because of
the increased demand for children and young
people to learn “skills for life”. We have a wide
range of opportunities available: these include
volunteering with Squirrels (boys and girls aged 4
and 5), and Explorers (boys and girls aged 14 to
17); keeping the Group HQ in good condition;
or managing the Group’s finances. Some of the
activities children take part in range from archery
to holding birds of prey, cooking to hiking,
science to sleepovers, and first aid to overseas
expeditions. There are plenty of roles working
with children aged 4 to 17, managing people,
looking after the Group’s equipment or being a
trustee. Whatever skills you have, we can find
you a role. However, you might want to try
something different and we can arrange that
for you.
There is progression for all of the children;
Squirrels might make a fruit kebab whilst
Explorers might make a meal that incorporates
The Arts Society
The Arts Society is a national organisation
that hosts outstanding lectures on a wide
range of Arts-based topics; along with
Study Days and visits to museums and
historic buildings–often not open generally.
an ingredient for every letter of the alphabet;
Beavers might visit the fire station whilst Scouts
might visit the House of Commons.
Cub Scout Amelia Doyle said, “I’d never been
camping before, but the adults ensured we had
a brilliant time. We helped to pitch the tents and
then we had a game followed by hot chocolate.
On Saturday, we did some science experiments,
cooked on a real fire, and had a sing-song
around the campfire. On Sunday, we had a
water fight and did some climbing. The whole
weekend was terrific.”
Adult volunteer, Samantha Fabbro said, “I began
volunteering with Beavers but then decided to
go out of my comfort zone, so I volunteered
to take 36 Explorer Scouts to a World Scout
Jamboree. I had never slept in a tent before and
had to get used to it. I wouldn’t change any of
that experience, it was just brilliant.”
COMMUNITY NEWS
A multi-sensory
programme of
events at Milton’s
Cottage
From scratch-and-sniff cards to
dine-in-the-dark suppers, Milton’s
Cottage in Chalfont St Giles is offering
literature lovers a feast for all the senses
this season - providing immersive
opportunities to experience the museum
through touch, taste, sound and scent as
well as sight.
Reflecting the fact that Milton was blind when
he lived here, and wrote his best-known work
Paradise Lost, Milton’s Cottage is working
with Guide Dogs for the Blind and a range
of sensory experts - from master chocolatiers
to professional perfumers - to change the
way people interact with the museum and its
collection.
Each room in the Grade I listed, timber-framed
building – Milton’s only surviving residence
- will be complemented with a different
combination of multi-sensory stimuli to inspire
visitors to experience Milton’s Cottage, as well as
their literary garden, in new and more interactive
ways.
Launching with a chocolate-making weekend,
17th century style, and culminating in a multisensory
reading of Paradise Lost, Making
Sense of Milton will also make sighted tours a
regular feature of the museum’s programme.
Taking place on the first Thursday of every
month, these are free of charge to people with
vision impairment as well as sighted guides.
“Our whole programme is designed to
complement Milton’s remarkably multisensory
poetry and explore the history of the
17 th century in new ways,” says Kelly O’Reilly,
Director of Milton’s Cottage. “Milton lived in an
era when English people had the chance to drink
tea, coffee and hot chocolate for the first time
and we want to give our visitors a taste of this
fascinating period.”
It was during Milton’s tenure as Cromwell’s
Secretary for Foreign Tongues – and unofficial
spin doctor for England’s only republican
government – that the country’s first coffee and
chocolate houses opened. They quickly took off,
becoming such hotbeds of debate and dissent
that Charles II tried (unsuccessfully) to close them
down after the Restoration of the Monarchy.
EYE NEWS
More than a
reading lens
Often called office or degressive lenses they
are a great alternative to regular reading
glasses; like comfortable snug slippers or
a cosy jumper, they are the easy-but-hard
working hero of the spectacle world.
Most of us spend hours concentrating on close tasks.
This is challenging for your eyes when you shift your
gaze from very close to arms length.
Occupational lenses work for close-reading, and for
a fixed distance, making the computer screen clearer
and hobbies such as crafting, music, cooking and
DIY, easier. Reading glasses work within a fixed range
- ok when you are sitting, reading or writing. If you
want to see an item on a shelf whilst out shopping or
anything on a desk beyond reach - it will be blurred
and out of focus. With electronic devices such as
mobile phones, tablets and laptops most of us have a
varying range that we need to see clearly.
Occupational lenses can be customised and are
optimised for your visual needs. They don’t have
any lines and look just like a reading lens. As a
good value option you may wish you’d had them
years ago. Ask your optician to demonstrate how
they work.
Most important: always attend for regular eye tests,
and if you have any questions or concerns ask your
optician. They are always happy to help.
What’s been happening at
Beaconsfield Town Council?
As we start the new year,
we are also building up
to the start of the new
civic year which runs from
April 23 to March 24. The
council have been planning
and working on the budget
over the last quarter and at
the Town Council meeting
on 15th December, the
Mayor, Cllr Alastair Pike,
presented the final budget
proposal which the council
agreed.
The proposal is made
showing a calculation
of expected income less
expected expenditure,
which results in a figure
known as The Precept
which is funded by council
tax.
The Town Council
maintains playgrounds,
open spaces, football
pitches, woodlands,
Holtspur Bank Nature
Reserve and Butterfly
Reserve, provides public
toilets, maintains public
buildings like the Town Hall
and Holtspur Youth Club,
provides planters, hanging
baskets and benches to
enhance the town, and
the Christmas lights.
Currently preparations
are underway to put up
bunting in preparation for
the King’s Coronation.
This year we are undertaking
a restoration project of
the historic milestones in
Beaconsfield, we continue
to replace benches and
undertake new projects
plus we will be funding
traffic projects where
agreed such as sorting out
the congestion around the
schools in Wattleton Road.
And we do all that (and
more!) for about £1.50 per
household per week.
Welcome Back
Beaconsfield -
Limited Edition
Prints Now
Available!
This unique painting by
local artist Varvara Neiman
recalls the historic event
in July 2021 when local
residents were able to
come together again
following the significant
lockdowns during the
Covid pandemic. The
original work measures 1
metre x 1.5 metres and is
painted in oil on canvas.
The initial sketch took place
during the event with the
painting itself produced in
the artist’s studio. The work
was finally completed in the
Autumn of 2022 after some
250 hours of work!
The work features five
Town Mayors, Steve Jones,
Sandy Saunders, Alex
Dunlop, Anita Cranmer
and Alastair Pike together
with Deputy Mayor
Jackson Ng, Town Clerk,
Alexa Collins and Project
Manager Jeannette Buckle.
Leading Rotarians Ben &
Nikki Wright together with
prominent “locals”Deborah
& Peter Sanders, Phillip &
Susan Sheahan, Deirdre &
Lawrence Smaje and Caryn
Dunlop also appear in the
foreground.
The painting would not
be complete and so
historic without Town Crier
Richard(Dick) Smith and
the Town Hall itself in the
background. Dick Smith
has been our Town Crier
since 1969 and the
Neo-Georgian Town Hall
built in 1936 remains a
prominent feature in the
centre of the New Town.
Finally can you spot the
artist at work? She is a few
yards behind the Mayor
and working on a miniature
version!
Safe & gentle ear wax
removal at a clinic
near you
Microsuctioning
At Hearwego Clinic we provide instant and effective ear wax removal treatment. Microsuction is the gold
standard method of ear wax removal.
Unlike traditional ear syringing or irrigation, which uses water, microsuction uses gentle suction to remove
ear wax. This is a safe, gentle and effective method of ear wax removal and, in the majority of cases, provides
instant relief and immediately restores full hearing. Our Audiologists are trained in all methods
of ear wax removal, microsuction, ear irrigation (commonly known as ear syringing) and
instrumentation.
What to expect at your appointment
At Hearwego our practitioners will use a microscope to see a detailed view of your
ear canal and examine the potential build-up of ear wax. Ear wax and debris are
removed using a gentle device. Our appointments include an examination of your
ears and removal of ear wax using microsuction, which typically lasts between 10-30
minutes. Depending on the consistency of the wax, we may need to revert to ear
irrigation (commonly known as ear syringing) or instrumentation. In rare cases, a
follow-up visit may be required to remove particularly stubborn ear wax.
LEGAL ADVICE
Costs of Living Crisis and
Separation or Divorce
Nobody expects to find themselves planning
for separation or divorce – everyone hopes for
that ‘happy ever after’.
Sadly, this isn’t always the case and as family lawyers we know that one
of the most difficult aspects of a separation or divorce is the change in
financial circumstances for both parties, now more so than ever. One
of the factors that parties need to take into account when considering
separation, either privately to themselves or in discussions with their
current partner/spouse, is most certainly the current cost of living crisis.
There is no doubt this financial squeeze makes separating at this time
even more difficult.
Firstly, parties need to consider that, if they separate, will they be able
to afford to rent elsewhere while their divorce is finalised? The hike in
mortgage rates has correspondingly meant an increase in rent.
Further down the track, there is also the dilemma of being able to
afford mortgages at all for a new home, another real issue that we know
couples considering divorce often talk about. The economic crisis has
meant that many reasonable mortgage products were removed from the
market, making obtaining a mortgage incredibly problematic for many
people.
Coupled with the hike in energy prices and the price squeeze on goods,
services and food – parties that were relying on their joint incomes need
to consider carefully their financial steps in separation and as singles –
something that we are very mindful of when we talk through options
with clients.
They also need to consider, if an answer to the division of their
matrimonial finances RS_BEACS_AM_CHAL_CMYK_130X90_OUT_1.pdf is not swift, that proceedings through the court 1 04/10/2021 11:44
process may cause delays and costs: given that the court service is now
in a worse position than the NHS when it comes to funding and the
ability to provide an efficient cost effective service.
So we often guide our clients to look at alternatives to the lengthy
court process which we know can weigh heavy on their decision to
proceed. That need for swifter resolutions has certainly become more
prevalent – people’s mental health definitely suffers, we see this first
hand, and mental wellbeing also directly impacts physical health -
unhappy relationships, particularly in a difficult economic climate, are
intolerable.
There are options to make separation and divorce more manageable
and actually more financially palatable -
• Mediation: a skilled mediator will talk with both parties about the key
sticking points, mostly finances and children issues and hopefully get
both sides to agree a settlement without the need for long drawn out
court hearings.
• Collaborative Law: parties and their solicitors work together in a
non-positional way to reach an effective solution, swiftly.
• Arbitration: parties avoid court altogether and ask an Arbitrator, who
in effect sits as a judge, to determine how their case is to be resolved if
they are unable to do so themselves. This is a quick, bespoke process
aimed at swift resolution.
Whatever one’s circumstances always seek professional advice. And if
you think any of the above applies, do consider contacting us – not
only are we specialist family lawyers, we also have a team of qualified
Mediators, Collaborative Lawyers and Arbitrators.
The economic crisis does not appear to be going
anywhere, and people need to plan accordingly, not only
in terms of potential separation but also life generally.
FINANCIAL NEWS
Act now to boost
your State Pension?
You have until April 2023 to fill in missing
national insurance contributions, which
could make a difference to your retirement.
Buy ‘extra’ pension years
If you’ve had a career break, a low income or worked
abroad, you may not have paid national insurance. Under
the new state pension rules, you need 35 qualifying years
for a full rate pay-out. If you’ve spare savings, it’s possible
to replace some missing NI qualifying years.
Normally, you can fill in gaps going back six years, but
until 5th April 2023, those who reached or will reach
state pension age after April 2016 can fill in gaps
dating back to 2006-07, meaning you can make up for
a total of 16 years of missed contributions.
How to check that you are on track
1. Request a state pension forecast from gov.uk to
see how much you are on track to receive and at
what age you will get it. It should also advise you
if there is anything you can to do to increase the
amount.
2. Call the Future Pension Service helpline on 0800
731 0175 to make sure filling in gaps in your national
insurance record will boost your pension.
3. If you top up your national insurance contributions
by paying HMRC online or by cheque or bank
transfer. Include your national insurance number
as a reference. For help, call the national insurance
helpline on 0300 200 3500.
To determine whether it’s worthwhile, see how many
NI years you already have. If gov.uk shows you’ll
receive £185.15 per week, then this is a full pension,
and you don’t need to do anything.
Is it worth it?
The rate is £15.85 per missing week of NI
contributions – £824.20 for a full year. Paying £8,242
to make up a ten-year gap could give you an
additional £2,750 a year – this would be worth
£55,000 extra over a 20-year retirement without
taking inflation into account. So, if you live at least
four years after retiring you’ll earn back what you
paid, which is an investment return very
hard to find elsewhere!
