Westfield Doorsteppa! 

February was another busy month for events in the local area. 

We hope that receiving The Doorsteppa is helping you keep in

We have recently received a great level of feedback from both 

readers and advertisers. It is satisfying to know that people 

enjoy what we produce and look forward to receiving it each 

month. It is also good to hear that people are regularly

advertise with us. 

Team Fostering are a non-for-profit fostering agency and they 

are raising awareness of the shortage of Foster Carers locally. 

Each month they receive a high volume of requests for 

children who require a home. Please turn to our Fostering 

Section on page 18 to see how you can help an industry facing 

crisis point. 

We also look at the history of Westthorpe Colliery in this 

edition, as March marks the 100 year anniversary of the 

opening. See our History Section on page 30 for all the info. 

As spring begins and the warmer months close in we do

Community 

Preparation for Animals at War Remembrance Day 

Dogs and pigeons carried messages. Pigeons also 

had cameras strapped to their chests to take aerial 

reconnaissance photographs! 

Canaries were used to detect poisonous gas. Cats 

and dogs were trained to hunt rats in the trenches. 

Eckington Poppy Club have shown off their 

displays, that were put together for Armistice Day. 

Various other breeds of dogs were also trained to 

sniffed out land mines and found casualties under 

rubble and much more. 

Rainbow Playgroup planted purple poppies at the 

base of the solider with a dog in the grounds of St 

Peters and St Pauls Eckington Church. 

This is to make people aware of what a crucial part 

animals played in the war. 

There are many stories that point out how 

important animals were. Horses, donkeys, mules 

and camels carried food, water, ammunition and 

medical supplies to the men at the front. 

Lest we forget.

Fostering 

Foster Carer Shortage! 

Team Fostering are a local not for profit independent 

fostering agency, who are wanting to raise awareness of 

the shortage of Foster Carers in our Local Region. 

Team Fostering recently hosted an event at the 

Eckington Heritage Centre to answer any questions 

about fostering and to help increase awareness in our 

local area. 

Each month Team Fostering Yorkshire and East Midlands 

receive a high volume of requests for children who require 

a foster home, however the foster care industry is facing a 

huge crisis at the moment. There is a national shortage of 

over 7,500 carers and it is becoming increasing difficult task 

to identify a home that is best suited to the 

children’s/young people’s needs and that is why it is 

becoming more important to make people aware of the 

massive shortage not only in our area but nationally. 

Team Fostering believes that every young person 

deserves the chance to feel loved and get the chance to 

experience being part of a family in a safe and nurturing 

environment. 

What does not for profit independent fostering agency 

mean? At Team Fostering it means everything goes into 

supporting our Team Fostering Family (Foster Carers, 

staff and our children and young people) we provide 

24-hour support for foster carers, we have education 

team, family support workers, Psychologist, extensive 

training programme. Team also ensures our children and 

young people have access to a family holiday by 

providing and paying for a caravan holiday, providing 

various activities during school holidays for all our foster 

families (Jump, bowling, theme parks, pantomimes, 

festive parties) we have a life skills programme and 

independence residential for our older young people to 

help prepare them for adult hood and many more 

support groups. 

What do you need to become a foster carer? Everyone 

has the potential to become a foster carer if you are over 

21, have a spare room, and the ability to offer a safe, 

stable family life for a child/young person. Those suited 

to becoming a foster carer will allow young people to 

grow, become their own person, support them to go to 

school, support them to maintain any existing 

relationships that are important and provide the 

opportunity to develop new friends. We do request 

carers have access to a car to ensure all the child’s 

transport and care needs can be met) 

One of the current carers at Team Fostering, Helen, said: 

“You don’t need any experience, you just have to be the 

sort of person who wants to make a difference in 

children’s lives.” 

Do you receive payment to be a foster carer? We 

acknowledge it cost to run a house and provide for 

children and young people. Yes as a Team Fostering 

Carer you receive a fostering allowance which varies 

dependent on the age of the child, two thirds of the 

youngsters currently with Team Fostering are over 11 

and pay averages around £480 per week for looking after 

a teenager.

Council News 

15 new Shared Ownership 

homes for Owlthorpe 

The council’s new Shared Ownership scheme, which helps 

people buy part shares in a home they want to purchase, will 

see 15 new two, three and four-bedroomed homes become 

available between now and July 2023. 

The scheme, approved last year, saw the council become a 

provider and manager of Shared Ownership homes, which 

are built or acquired as part of the council’s programme for 

increasing the number of new homes in the city, the Stock 

Increase Programme. 

To be eligible for the scheme, buyers must: 

• Be first-time buyers 

• Use the property as their primary residence 

• Not able to afford to buy their home outright 

• Not own another home somewhere else unless their 

current home is in the process of being sold 

They will be able to buy a share of a house from the council 

and pay subsidised rent on the remaining share which is 

retained by the council. The properties will be advertised on 

Rightmove.

Those interested in finding out more about whether the 

scheme will suit them, should contact the council’s Shared 

Ownership Team at SharedOwnership@sheffield.gov.uk 

Prospective buyers will need to find out how much they can 

borrow and undergo affordability checks by a mortgage 

lender. They will also need to provide a deposit on the share 

that they will be purchasing. More information is at:

The council assesses the need for affordable housing every 5 

years and in the last Strategic Housing Market Assessment 

(SHMA) in 2019 it was found that Sheffield had an affordable 

housing shortfall of 902 homes each year for the next 5 years. 

Councillor Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: 

“Young families, couples or single people who can afford to 

buy part of a new home through either a deposit or a 

mortgage but who can’t get a mortgage for the full value of 

the property will see this progress as welcome news. It’s so 

important to open up these opportunities for households on 

limited incomes to part purchase their homes if they want to 

or if they cannot afford to buy in full. To see the first houses 

becoming available is so good to see, and whilst I know we 

need many more new homes, every bit of progress in the 

right direction helps.”

Purchasers will need to raise a sufficient deposit, usually 

between 5% and 10% and secure a mortgage to buy a share 

of the property. They will pay rent on the part of the 

property that is owned by the council. At first, they will be 

able to buy between 10% and 75% of the home based on 

their ability to afford the purchase and can keep buying 

shares until they own the property outright, known as ‘staircasing’. 

Purchasers will be able to buy a further 1% stake 

each year for the first 15 years or choose to buy a larger 

stake from 5% upwards at any time. 

Background information: 

• The Shared Ownership model provides a 10-year period on 

new build homes during which the costs of some repairs 

would be met by the council. Only after 10 years does the 

shared owner take on full responsibility for repairs costs. 

This 10-year period is in addition to any repairs or 

maintenance covered by the builder’s warranty and so it 

would cover any works required that the building warranty 

does not cover. 

• Shared Ownership not only provides a way for households 

to contribute towards meeting their housing needs it also 

helps relieve housing register pressures and reduce 

competition for social rented homes. 

• Sheffield City Council estimates that there are over 5,200 

households registered for a council or housing association 

rented home in Sheffield who have the financial ability to 

purchases a 25% stake in a 3-bedroom shared ownership 

property. 

• This scheme is designed to help people who want to start 

paying towards the purchase of a property. Social housing is 

a tenure of choice for many households, but at the moment 

households are registered for housing on average 8 years 

before being granted a tenancy.

History 

Marking the 100 years anniversary 

of Westthorpe Colliery this month 

Westthorpe Colliery opened in 1923 when the 

first sod was cut on the 17th of March. 

During its lifetime the Pit provided employment 

for many men and women and was successful in 

attaining many targets in coal production. 

Westthorpe Colliery played a huge part in the 

working and social lives of the people of 

Killamarsh and the surrounding villages and 

resulted in a very close community. 

In line with a decision taken jointly in November 

1983 by the National Coal Board and 

representatives of all the mining unions, 

Westthorpe Colliery officially closed on 31st 

March 1984. 

children, grandchildren and great grandchildren 

still live in the area and for them the memory of 

Westthorpe Colliery should be kept alive. 

On Monday 22nd September 2014, a memorial 

was erected by Killamarsh Heritage Society on 

Green Lane where the road went into the pit 

yard, to mark 30 years since Westthorpe closed. 

The memorial was made possible by the 

support of stonemason Gary Daynes at his 

premises in the Engineers’ Workshop which still 

stands on the site of the old Waleswood 

Colliery, on a machine used at the Colliery in 

1946. The memorial is made of Bretton Moor 

Derbyshire Stone. 

The decision had been taken in order to protect 

as fully as possible all coal industry employees 

within the northern sector of the National Coal 

Board’s North Derbyshire area. Apart from 

those men who elected to take early retirement 

or voluntary redundancy all the Westthorpe 

men were guaranteed jobs at other local pits. 

Many ex miners still live in Killamarsh and the 

surrounding villages although, of course, many 

are no longer with us. However, many of their

The memorial area is a pleasant place to sit, 

with colourful plants and grassed seating area. 

So when you are next passing, out for a stroll or

Sheffield Half Marathon 2023 

Starts from Arundel Gate, Sheffield City Centre

A major event in the UK’s running calendar and one of 

the headline events in Sheffield’s Festival of the 

Outdoors! 

Sheffield Half Marathon is one of the best attended Half 

Marathons in the country, attracting thousands of 

runners of all abilities to the city’s streets each year and 

raising many thousands of pounds for great causes. 

The roller disco’s are high energy combination of roller 

skating, thumping beats and awesome lighting shows. 

Every session has a dedicated beginners area where you can 

safely learn the basics of roller skating from experienced 

instructors. Once you have gained confidence you will 

be able to join the main section of the rink, where the fun 

really starts! 

In terms of roller skate hire, traditional quad type roller 

skates and also inline skates are available from junior size 8 

up to adult size 12. Sets of pads are also available to hire free 

of charge in both kids and adults sizes.

Tractor Fest 

Storforth Lane Industrial Estate, Hasland 

Sun 26 March 2023 10am - 3pm 

A host of entertainment, crafts, food and drink make 

Tractor Fest a great family day out. Over 100 tractors 

will be on display, including vintage tractors and more 

modern machinery. 

It's also one of the most scenic- with a route that starts 

and finishes in the city centre, but takes runners all the 

way out to the boundary of the Peak District National 

Park (so yes, it’s hilly!), and back again. 

The race even incorporates a 'triple test' giving entrants 

a chance to be crowned Peaks Challenge winners in a 

timed Outdoor City hill climb, triumph in a timed 10K 

downhill sprint section and cross the finish line first to 

lift the Sheffield Half Marathon title. 

The event attracts many spectators along the route too, 

so whether you’re running or spectating you can expect 

a fantastic atmosphere.

Ahead of Mother’s Day on Sunday 19 March, this session 

will celebrate all the people who take care of us and are

in support of Ashgate Hospice. Activities include mini 

tractor driving, colouring and arts and crafts.
