We are are an experienced team of 8 landscapers with most of our
guys having 20 plus years in the trade.
I started myself at the age of 13 in the landscape industry working
weekends for a local garden centre, and then progressed over the
years. I’ve spent the last ten years running a team of 15 but now
we’ve downsized so we can specialise more in the design and
build element and being able to be more focused on fewer builds.
We have built gardens for Chelsea gold winners, installed in the
grounds of Chatsworth, worked all over the country building sensory
gardens, and we pride ourselves on quality and passion and
thinking out of the box!
Above: Be the difference. Foster.
Welcome to the March 2023 edition of The Halfway &
Westfield Doorsteppa!
February was another busy month for events in the local area.
We hope that receiving The Doorsteppa is helping you keep in
touch with community news, trades and services near you.
We have recently received a great level of feedback from both
readers and advertisers. It is satisfying to know that people
enjoy what we produce and look forward to receiving it each
month. It is also good to hear that people are regularly
contacting and using the local businesses and services who
advertise with us.
Team Fostering are a non-for-profit fostering agency and they
are raising awareness of the shortage of Foster Carers locally.
Each month they receive a high volume of requests for
children who require a home. Please turn to our Fostering
Section on page 18 to see how you can help an industry facing
crisis point.
We also look at the history of Westthorpe Colliery in this
edition, as March marks the 100 year anniversary of the
opening. See our History Section on page 30 for all the info.
As spring begins and the warmer months close in we do
become very busy, so please keep an eye on our deadlines to
ensure your place in next months issues.
Enjoy March!
ARIES 21 March - 20 April
The adventure starts here. A whole new direction and way
forward. There’s the suggestion of a change of location affecting
your living arrangements, or your business, and this should be
welcomed with open arms. It remains imperative to look after your
finances and hold onto all that you, and others, have worked hard
for. The past plays a part in current decisions but don’t be tempted
to wear rose coloured spectacles. It wasn’t all good!
TAURUS 21 April - 21 May
Potentially, you’re caught between a rock and a hard place
and can’t see a clear way forward. Be patient! This is a temporary
situation and you’ll soon be on your way again. Don’t let fears and
worries get the better of you but spend time resting and relaxing.
Home provides great comfort and solace. Something from the
past could be on its way back but remember you’re a different
person now and so much wiser!
GEMINI 22 May - 21 June
Career and finances are the main themes now with
investments in property ventures a distinct possibility. You may
find yourself caught in a fine balancing act as you try to get the
best out of money available to you but, with a little forethought, you
can succeed. Taking time out for you works wonders and simply
existing on your own terms brings welcome relief. Some tangles
will sort themselves out given nothing more than time.
LIBRA 24 September - 23 October
What goes around comes around and you’re encouraged to
offer help and support to others as you’ve been helped in the past
and will be helped again in the future. It’s this support which gets
us all through life. You and another can achieve much if you work
together, as a team, towards a common goal. Aim high, focus on
your dreams, put the effort in, and success will follow. The
Universe offers extra assistance!
SCORPIO 24 October - 22 November
The Universe provides an almighty push to achieve your full
potential so prepare to play your part. Learning and exams feature
largely, as do fresh starts in business and career. Don’t let the
worry of how this is going to pan out cause sleepless nights. That
doesn’t help and can drag you down. Female health can be a
cause for concern and any niggles require appropriate advice. An
older male will offer staunch, emotional, support.
SAGITTARIUS 23 November - 21 December
Something’s set to arrive in your world lighting it up with
vibrant, rainbow coloured, hues. There’s the potential for much joy
and happiness but there’s a caveat! It seems you’re too busy or
don’t feel you deserve this good fortune. The good news is that
you’re not too busy and you certainly do deserve it. Let go of
feelings of guilt, delegate where possible, not everything rests on
your shoulders, and stop holding yourself back!
CANCER 22 June - 23 July
Neck and shoulder issues could give cause for concern and it
would be wise to seek appropriate help. Alternatively, are you
shouldering too much responsibility? Then delegate! There’s no
shame in letting others pull their weight. We’re looking at balance here
and where redress can be sought. Be fair to all concerned
otherwise resentments fester but there’s no need for you to take sole
responsibility. A woman of wisdom and standing offers her full support.
CAPRICORN 22 December - 20 January
A very happy time for you and you should be experiencing a
lightness of spirit not felt for a while. There’s a fly in the ointment
though and it comes from someone gossiping and making
mischief. Someone you wouldn’t have believed would do such a
thing! This could cause heartache but don’t let it get you down.
Ultimately, you’re well placed for a brand new start in one area at
least and you’re going places!
LEO 24 July - 23 August
A low mood can spiral out of control if you let it. Develop
good sleeping patterns, eat well, and be kind to yourself. There’s
cause for celebration with all manner of folk, for a raft of reasons,
and this sees you in your element as more than one glass is raised
to you and your achievements. BUT! They ‘aint seen nothin’ yet”
as the Universe pushes you further up the ladder of success. Aim
high!
AQUARIUS 21 January - 19 February
The future needs planning and heartfelt conversation with
those closest to you. You all need to talk, openly and honestly,
and you all need to actively listen. You have ideas aplenty and
cannot wait to be on your way but patience is advised. A new path
opening up will be full of adventure, thrills, and some spills, but
you’ll be fine providing you prepare! Take that leap of faith; you
don’t know where you’ll land.
VIRGO 24 August - 23 September
Your goals ARE in sight! However: it needs a final push
from you and you’re encouraged to keep going. Gather your
reserves of strength and you’ll soon shake off the things which
have held you back, or hindered you, and be assured that the way
forward is so much brighter and healthier for everyone. Keep tight
lipped about your plans as someone isn’t who they claim to be and
could cause disruption. Watch your back.
PISCES 20 February - 20 March
Hold tight as you may be in stormy waters. Patience will see
you through. More than one opportunity is on offer and whilst one
in particular appears to tick every box, be realistic! This may not
be as it appears. This isn’t the time for wishful thinking. You’d be
better to wait for everything to calm down before making your final
decision. Be considerate towards others and be prepared to offer
assistance where it’s required.
Preparation for Animals at War Remembrance Day
Dogs and pigeons carried messages. Pigeons also
had cameras strapped to their chests to take aerial
reconnaissance photographs!
Canaries were used to detect poisonous gas. Cats
and dogs were trained to hunt rats in the trenches.
Eckington Poppy Club have shown off their
displays, that were put together for Armistice Day.
Various other breeds of dogs were also trained to
sniffed out land mines and found casualties under
rubble and much more.
Rainbow Playgroup planted purple poppies at the
base of the solider with a dog in the grounds of St
Peters and St Pauls Eckington Church.
This is to make people aware of what a crucial part
animals played in the war.
There are many stories that point out how
important animals were. Horses, donkeys, mules
and camels carried food, water, ammunition and
medical supplies to the men at the front.
Lest we forget.
Fostering
Foster Carer Shortage!
Team Fostering are a local not for profit independent
fostering agency, who are wanting to raise awareness of
the shortage of Foster Carers in our Local Region.
Team Fostering recently hosted an event at the
Eckington Heritage Centre to answer any questions
about fostering and to help increase awareness in our
local area.
Each month Team Fostering Yorkshire and East Midlands
receive a high volume of requests for children who require
a foster home, however the foster care industry is facing a
huge crisis at the moment. There is a national shortage of
over 7,500 carers and it is becoming increasing difficult task
to identify a home that is best suited to the
children’s/young people’s needs and that is why it is
becoming more important to make people aware of the
massive shortage not only in our area but nationally.
Team Fostering believes that every young person
deserves the chance to feel loved and get the chance to
experience being part of a family in a safe and nurturing
environment.
What does not for profit independent fostering agency
mean? At Team Fostering it means everything goes into
supporting our Team Fostering Family (Foster Carers,
staff and our children and young people) we provide
24-hour support for foster carers, we have education
team, family support workers, Psychologist, extensive
training programme. Team also ensures our children and
young people have access to a family holiday by
providing and paying for a caravan holiday, providing
various activities during school holidays for all our foster
families (Jump, bowling, theme parks, pantomimes,
festive parties) we have a life skills programme and
independence residential for our older young people to
help prepare them for adult hood and many more
support groups.
What do you need to become a foster carer? Everyone
has the potential to become a foster carer if you are over
21, have a spare room, and the ability to offer a safe,
stable family life for a child/young person. Those suited
to becoming a foster carer will allow young people to
grow, become their own person, support them to go to
school, support them to maintain any existing
relationships that are important and provide the
opportunity to develop new friends. We do request
carers have access to a car to ensure all the child’s
transport and care needs can be met)
One of the current carers at Team Fostering, Helen, said:
“You don’t need any experience, you just have to be the
sort of person who wants to make a difference in
children’s lives.”
Do you receive payment to be a foster carer? We
acknowledge it cost to run a house and provide for
children and young people. Yes as a Team Fostering
Carer you receive a fostering allowance which varies
dependent on the age of the child, two thirds of the
youngsters currently with Team Fostering are over 11
and pay averages around £480 per week for looking after
a teenager.
If you have ever thought about expanding your family
and opening up your home to young people in need,
then now is the perfect time to get in touch with the
friendly staff at Team Fostering, who can help you with
your first steps to changing a child’s life.
Council News
15 new Shared Ownership
homes for Owlthorpe
The council’s new Shared Ownership scheme, which helps
people buy part shares in a home they want to purchase, will
see 15 new two, three and four-bedroomed homes become
available between now and July 2023.
The scheme, approved last year, saw the council become a
provider and manager of Shared Ownership homes, which
are built or acquired as part of the council’s programme for
increasing the number of new homes in the city, the Stock
Increase Programme.
To be eligible for the scheme, buyers must:
• Be first-time buyers
• Use the property as their primary residence
• Not able to afford to buy their home outright
• Not own another home somewhere else unless their
current home is in the process of being sold
They will be able to buy a share of a house from the council
and pay subsidised rent on the remaining share which is
retained by the council. The properties will be advertised on
Rightmove.
2
Those interested in finding out more about whether the
scheme will suit them, should contact the council’s Shared
Ownership Team at SharedOwnership@sheffield.gov.uk
Prospective buyers will need to find out how much they can
borrow and undergo affordability checks by a mortgage
lender. They will also need to provide a deposit on the share
that they will be purchasing. More information is at:
https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/housing/shared-ownership
The council assesses the need for affordable housing every 5
years and in the last Strategic Housing Market Assessment
(SHMA) in 2019 it was found that Sheffield had an affordable
housing shortfall of 902 homes each year for the next 5 years.
Councillor Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said:
“Young families, couples or single people who can afford to
buy part of a new home through either a deposit or a
mortgage but who can’t get a mortgage for the full value of
the property will see this progress as welcome news. It’s so
important to open up these opportunities for households on
limited incomes to part purchase their homes if they want to
or if they cannot afford to buy in full. To see the first houses
becoming available is so good to see, and whilst I know we
need many more new homes, every bit of progress in the
right direction helps.”
Above: A home at the Owlthorpe Shared Ownership Scheme
Purchasers will need to raise a sufficient deposit, usually
between 5% and 10% and secure a mortgage to buy a share
of the property. They will pay rent on the part of the
property that is owned by the council. At first, they will be
able to buy between 10% and 75% of the home based on
their ability to afford the purchase and can keep buying
shares until they own the property outright, known as ‘staircasing’.
Purchasers will be able to buy a further 1% stake
each year for the first 15 years or choose to buy a larger
stake from 5% upwards at any time.
Background information:
• The Shared Ownership model provides a 10-year period on
new build homes during which the costs of some repairs
would be met by the council. Only after 10 years does the
shared owner take on full responsibility for repairs costs.
This 10-year period is in addition to any repairs or
maintenance covered by the builder’s warranty and so it
would cover any works required that the building warranty
does not cover.
• Shared Ownership not only provides a way for households
to contribute towards meeting their housing needs it also
helps relieve housing register pressures and reduce
competition for social rented homes.
• Sheffield City Council estimates that there are over 5,200
households registered for a council or housing association
rented home in Sheffield who have the financial ability to
purchases a 25% stake in a 3-bedroom shared ownership
property.
• This scheme is designed to help people who want to start
paying towards the purchase of a property. Social housing is
a tenure of choice for many households, but at the moment
households are registered for housing on average 8 years
before being granted a tenancy.
History
Marking the 100 years anniversary
of Westthorpe Colliery this month
Westthorpe Colliery opened in 1923 when the
first sod was cut on the 17th of March.
During its lifetime the Pit provided employment
for many men and women and was successful in
attaining many targets in coal production.
Westthorpe Colliery played a huge part in the
working and social lives of the people of
Killamarsh and the surrounding villages and
resulted in a very close community.
In line with a decision taken jointly in November
1983 by the National Coal Board and
representatives of all the mining unions,
Westthorpe Colliery officially closed on 31st
March 1984.
children, grandchildren and great grandchildren
still live in the area and for them the memory of
Westthorpe Colliery should be kept alive.
On Monday 22nd September 2014, a memorial
was erected by Killamarsh Heritage Society on
Green Lane where the road went into the pit
yard, to mark 30 years since Westthorpe closed.
The memorial was made possible by the
support of stonemason Gary Daynes at his
premises in the Engineers’ Workshop which still
stands on the site of the old Waleswood
Colliery, on a machine used at the Colliery in
1946. The memorial is made of Bretton Moor
Derbyshire Stone.
The decision had been taken in order to protect
as fully as possible all coal industry employees
within the northern sector of the National Coal
Board’s North Derbyshire area. Apart from
those men who elected to take early retirement
or voluntary redundancy all the Westthorpe
men were guaranteed jobs at other local pits.
Many ex miners still live in Killamarsh and the
surrounding villages although, of course, many
are no longer with us. However, many of their
A recent addition to the memorial site is a
bench in memory of ex Westthorpe miner
George Melvyn “cocky” Williams placed there
by his widow.
The memorial area is a pleasant place to sit,
with colourful plants and grassed seating area.
So when you are next passing, out for a stroll or
walking your dog, take a break and rest on the
bench and remember Westthorpe Colliery.
Explore the beautiful
island of Madeira
Besides the surprisingly mild climate
throughout the year, with moderate
pleasant average temperatures of 25ºC
in Summer and 17ºC in winter, the
archipelago also offers a wide variety of
activities for all ages and tastes. This
wonderful climate allows you to fully
enjoy the pleasures of the sea and
nature. There will be plenty of
opportunities to swim in volcanic pools,
stretch out in the sunny beaches, take
a boat trip to see whales or dolphins,
hike to waterfalls, experience a
mountain bike adventure or go
canoeing in the heart of the Laurissilva
Forest.
3 interesting facts at 30 words each
Did you know that Madeira has an
exclusive overland transport in the
World? They are called toboggans
(wicker-sledges).
Did you know that William Shakespeare
mentioned Madeira Wine in his works?
In the play about Henry IV,
Shakespeare puts John Falstaff selling
his soul "for a glass of Madeira and a leg
of a capon".
Did you know that Cristiano Ronaldo
was born in Madeira Island?
What-to-do activities
There are different experiences that
can be lived in nature, such as walks
around cascades and waterfalls in the
Laurissilva Forest, a UNESCO World
Heritage Site. You can choose between
relaxing activities such as golf,
birdwatching, trekking, jeep excursions
or the adrenaline rush of canoeing,
parachuting, trail running, BTT or
climbing.
Experiences
This is much more than a simple trip;
Madeira allows you to collect exclusive
memories of the destination: a ride in
the iconic basket cars, a stroll around
waterfalls, a cable car descent to the
fajã dos padres, or a climb to the
highest peaks of the island.
Activities
Madeira is proud to present various
events, literally throughout the year
(from January to December). The
Flower Festival, the Atlantic Festival,
Carnival, the Colombo Festival and the
Wine Festival are some of the most
popular events. They attract thousands
of tourists, year after year, in search of
joyous experiences, with a contagious
energy that culminates on New Year’s
Eve, with one of the largest fireworks in
the world.
The race even incorporates a 'triple test' giving entrants
