Berks Rehab Resident Experiences
“Sunny Side” of Phoebe
o you have a Phoebe pep song?” asked 93-year-old
“DFrances Dobb as she sat down at the grand piano
to play for residents of Phoebe Berks Village. Receiving
shrugs in reply, she launched into the upbeat jazz tune
“On the Sunny Side of the Street.” Without hesitation,
folks chimed in, “Leave your worries on the doorstep…”
Frances’ hip replacement surgery was postponed in
August when she fell and broke a rib. Her daughter,
Sarah Silverman, said they were referred to Phoebe
Berks by Assured Assistance, Inc., a service she uses to
help her mother. “I heard good things about this place,
and it didn’t disappoint me,” Sarah says.
One area of the Village both Sarah and Frances
enjoyed was its recreation room. Frances usually played
the piano when they stopped in, attracting an audience.
Her performances became so popular that before
Frances was discharged, Village Activities Coordinator
Diana Berstler arranged for her to give a concert in the
auditorium. Frances agreed, partly because of the
instrument. “The Baldwin is a fine piano,” she commented.
“Anyone would sound good on that!”

Frances had the good
fortune to share a
room at Phoebe with a
sister-in-law of the
man who taught her to
play the organ in the
1940s. Her teacher and
band mate, Reuben
Brossman, was himself
a resident at Phoebe Berks just before she arrived.
Frances played the organ to earn money when her
husband was too ill to work. She was allowed to practice
at Wittich’s music store in Reading. Because she
could not read music, she learned everything by ear.
During a recent concert in which at least 10
requests were made, Frances recalled all but one. From
fast, upbeat melodies to slower numbers filled with
longing, Frances played them all without sheet music.
She added flourishes to each ending, recalling the days
she spent with Reuben in the early ’50s, performing in a
local group called the Musical Wanderers.
“We are very proud of the progress Frances made in
rehab here at Phoebe Berks,” said Kendra Leffler,
Director of Rehabilitation. “In a little over a month she
was strong enough to be discharged for surgery.”
After her hip replacement, Frances hopes to have “a
happy tune in her step.” Without a doubt, her time at
Phoebe has been on the “sunny side of the street.” ■
