The provisions of the Pension Protection Act
of 2006 are still in effect until the end of this year.
That means if you are 70½ or older, you may want
to take advantage of giving IRA assets to Phoebe
before the close of 2007 through a qualified charitable
distribution.
A qualified charitable distribution is defined by
the IRS as a distribution of a traditional or Roth
IRA fund made directly from an IRA trustee to a
nonprofit organization. The donor must have been
age 70½ or older when the distribution was made,
and the donor’s total qualified charitable distributions
this year cannot exceed $100,000. In the
case of a joint return, each spouse may claim a
qualified charitable distribution of up to $100,000
from his or her IRA.
The advantages are clear for those meeting
the age and process requirements:
■ Qualified charitable distributions from a
traditional or Roth IRA are tax-free.
■ Donors may give all or a portion of their
Phoebe Terrace Resident Council
Provides Lift to Phoebe Home
Throughout the year, Phoebe Terrace residents host a variety
of fundraisers, including hoagie sales and a fall attic
treasure sale. According to outgoing Resident Council
President Naomi Schleicher, “When we got enough in the
Resident Council’s bank account, we discussed how we could
do some good with our proceeds.”
During her tenure as president, Naomi attended meetings
of the Lehigh Valley Strategic Advisory Council at Phoebe
Home. It was there she received a copy of the Nursing Department’s
wish list and immediately knew what Terrace residents
could do to make a difference at Phoebe Home.
Members of the Terrace Resident Council met and decided
a patient lift was an ideal gift for them based on their
budget and the value it would provide to the nurses.
Shortly after the lift arrived, Michell Staska-Pier, Director
of Nursing at Phoebe Home, took it to the Terrace to thank
the residents and demonstrate how it is used. She told them,
“The gift you provided is especially nice because it ensures
the safety of both residents and staff.” ■
Why consider an IRA distribution to Phoebe
if you are age 70½ or better this year?
mandatory IRA withdrawals up to $100,000
this year.
■ Donors who are not able to itemize their tax
deductions can give directly from their IRA
and achieve the same benefits as if their
gift were fully deductible.
Time is of the essence – so contact your tax
advisors and IRA administrator to see if this strategy
makes sense for your specific financial circumstances.
