Due to the artist’s delicate use of colours and texture, it is advised to come to the gallery and 

see the works live. Our photographs cannot convey the nuance and subtle technique with 

which Robert Clicque constructed his art and serve merely as an adequate illustration. 

The gallery can provide the buyer with a photo certificate of a work, signed by the artist. 

All works come directly from the artist and are in good condition. However some works show 

traces of wear due to age and storage. On demand, condition reports can be provided.


Works 1974-1982 

The work of Robert Clicque has taken a new direction in 1974. 

The artist moves away from Pop Art and other influences, to come to an art where the 

depiction of reality becomes almost abstract. An extreme concentration of vision, when 

looking at nature as a subject, results in paintings that become minimal in their use of pictorial 

language. However, as Clicque states, nature is not static but in continuous flux. Therefore, as 

an artist, one must continuously examine the way in which one observes reality and the way 

in which one depicts one’s vision of reality. 

So parallel to the seascapes and landscapes, ‘Corrections’ and ‘Line paintings’ appear, which 

dissect the very fundamentals of drawing, painting and observing. 

By coming into contact with the drawings of Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci in London 

in the seventies, Clicque also starts questioning the way in which one sees and depicts space 

and objects which are seemingly ‘objective’. Cubes, circles, lines are traditionally elements 

which one uses to construct a painting. But as Clicque shows, these objective renderings are 

merely conventions, and one can depict cubes and circles in a different way. 

Thus lies open the path to a new reality, constructed through the use of alternative and 

personal pictorial building stones. In this way, Clicque constructs a personal view of reality, 

founded on his research on the fundamentals of painting in the 1970’s. 

We want to thank Robert Clicque for his relentless enthusiasm for this exhibition. 

Robert has personally designed and mounted the exhibition, true to his own ideas. 

It is a privilege having him and his work at the gallery and working with him has been an 

inspiring journey, resulting in an art environment at the sacristy of the chapel. 

Kabinet denominates a series of exhibitions, which can be varied in nature and will be held at 

the sacristy of the chapel of Gallery St-John, Ghent, Belgium, of which this is the first one.

About Robert Clicque 

I. 

The use of a recognizable image - from reality outside the canvas [-] can have the function of point of contact (a 

feeling) but here it is thus approached that the painted image recedes and refers to the painted canvas.

The paintings by Robert Clicque have, for the last few years, shown geometric elements. But one shouldn’t 

really situate this painter among the geometric-abstract painters. The border between imagery and representation 

is deliberately kept vague. 

The mathematically determined shapes he uses are rather a way to fool the eye about the category 

suggested. By introducing this play-ful element he crosses the borders of abstract inspiration… What is 

presented to the viewer must be interpreted, mentally reconstrued and completed. In this mental activity lies the 

real impact of Clicque’s work.

Last summer a series of paintings evolved with the ellips as their basic form. The ellips was drawn in a very 

spontaneous way and then crossed by a horizontal line, then by a vertical one and then by a diagonal line.
