Wednesday March 15 2023 Selwyn Times Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz NEWS 13 New Kirwee pub opens . . . sort of • By Susan Sandys PEOPLE WANTING to quench their thirst at the newly-opened Thirsty Acres at the weekend had to stick to non-alcoholic drinks. That is because the tavern was still waiting for its liquor license to be issued. “Who’s hungry? We would love for that post to read ‘Who’s Thirsty?’ But we are yet to receive our liquor licence,” Thirsty Acres posted on its Facebook page on Saturday morning. “We are hopeful this will be issued this afternoon, but it’s not something we can influence.” However, the licence had still not been signed off by Monday morning. Jono and Jen Alve are the new publicans at the premises, rebuilt from the former Kirwee Tavern, still owned by the original owner David Nesbitt. The original two-storey tavern was almost completely destroyed when a fire broke out in the late hours of Christmas Eve, 2019. The cause was found to be an electrical fault due to old wiring. The Alves were not available to talk to the Selwyn Times earlier this week. Nevertheless, it seems patrons enjoyed dining at the new premises, regardless of there being no alcohol over the opening weekend. “Well done Jono and team, thoroughly enjoyed our last night. Food was amazing . . . warm welcome from the team made us feel very welcome. We will definitely be back for a Pimms and a Heineken,” said one commenter on Facebook. GREAT TURNOUT: About 8000 people attended Children’s Day, including 18-month-old Kennedy, of Rolleston, who embraced the ball pit. Thousands poured into Foster Park on Sunday afternoon to celebrate Children’s Day. Organised by Selwyn Parenting Network, the day attracted about 8000 visitors after it was postponed from the previous Sunday. Operations and events trustee Kate Webb said it had been wonderful to see many families from all walks of life enjoying Aidan, 7, of Hornby, delighted in finding dinosaurs to hang out with. themselves on the sunny afternoon. “Families and children are our purpose and our charity strives to identify gaps within Selwyn and work towards inclusivity for all,” Webb said. The free event had large bouncy inflatables, stage shows, free sausage sizzle, animal balloons, facepainting, pony rides, emergency vehicles and much more. Liam, 4, and Arthur, 2, had the best mode of transport around the event in their shaded wheeled wagon, while Rolleston Scouts led a rubbish clean up at the end of the day.
