YOUNG DAD’S CANCER BATTLE
‘I can’t give up, I just want
to see my kids grow up’

TIME IS fast running out for
Dan Morbey as the 36-year-old
battles stage four bowel cancer.
The father of two young
children was recently given
a prognosis of three-tosix
months to live by his
specialists. He and his family
are hoping a Givealittle page
will help raise critical funds for
treatment options.
The family – Morbey and
partner Sarah Noble along
with Dylan, 4, and Alyssa, 2 –
found out Morbey had cancer
in September last year, but it
wasn’t until December they
received the full diagnosis.
“Total shock” was the
family’s reaction when they
learned Morbey had been
diagnosed with Metastatic
Cecal Adenocarcinoma with
Peritoneal Disease, stage four
bowel cancer.
“I think we were in shock for
three or four weeks,” Noble said.
At the time of the diagnosis,
his specialist told Morbey
his cancer was incurable,
with no option for surgery,
chemotherapy or radiation
because of how far the cancer
had spread.

Brummie Dan’s fight to beat cancer

raised, the family is trying to get
as much equipment as they can
to help Morbey’s treatment.
“Overseas they have cancer
treatment centres, and we are
trying to create one in our home,
so we are buying things like
infrared sauna blankets, red
light therapy and ozone therapy,”
Morbey said.
The equipment needed can
cost thousands of dollars. For
example, for an infrared sauna
blanket, which can relieve stress,
help with joint pain, lower
blood pressure and improve
circulation, prices can range
anywhere from a few hundred to
thousands of dollars.
“We have to make radical
changes and can’t just hope,”
Noble said.
So far, they have used about
$20,000 of the $24,000 raised to
cover extra tests and treatments
that are not funded and to pay
for a trip for them to return to
the UK for Morbey to see his
family in May.
Morbey was just about to get
his food truck business off the
ground, which he had been
struggling with for three years
with ongoing Covid restrictions.
He had also set up a food truck
market in Rolleston, which
was tracking well. Both were
expected to take off in summer,
but never had the opportunity.
“My career as a food truck
vendor never really got a
chance,” he said.
Morbey, originally from
Birmingham in the United
Kingdom, met Noble when she
was on her OE and decided to
follow her back to New Zealand
in 2017, moving around the
country and eventually settling
in Rolleston as renters at the end
of 2021.
Noble has also had to give up
her job to become a full-time
carer for Morbey as his condition
worsens, and to look after the
kids.
“Up until six weeks ago I
was able to help out around the
house and do the cleaning and
groceries, but now I’m just too
tired,” Morbey said.
“It can be mentally challenging
for me not to be able to play with
my kids.
“I also have to watch out when
they get sick to make sure they
don’t pass it on, a cold he (Dylan)
brought home put me on my arse
for two weeks.”
While the family is receiving
some support, they feel that the
system has failed with them
having to battle for extra
care.
“When I injured my back, I got
more support from ACC than I
do now I have stage four cancer,”
Morbey said.
“I think it should be easier
for people in my position that
once you’re diagnosed it starts a
process of support.”
Said Noble: “It just adds
stress.”
The couple said they are
incredibly grateful for all
the support from the local
community, such as dropping off
meals or mowing lawns for free.
“Every little bit helps make a
difference,” Noble said.

Christchurch’s housing and business development rules are changing
Ōtautahi Christchurch’s population is growing. Over the next 30 years, it’s predicted we’ll need more than 40,000
new houses to ensure everyone has a place to live, and Christchurch City Council is planning for that now.
Our growth challenge
We need to provide for the growth of housing and
business in the best locations in Christchurch, to
help address issues like climate change and housing
shortage. This means more houses where there’s good
access to shops, services, work, school, public transport
networks and infrastructure.
Where there’s good reason, we also need to ensure
development remains restricted or limited to protect
and maintain areas of value.
These changes won’t happen overnight. Over time the
look and feel of the city will change, and we want to plan
for that and keep what people value.
A new direction in urban planning
The planning rules have changed for New Zealand’s main urban areas. We need to
follow the new national direction to allow greater housing and business development
within Christchurch’s existing urban footprint.
There are new national standards for multi-unit housing developments called the
Medium-Density Residential Standards (MDRS). These aim to make it easier for denser
housing developments to happen. Once they come into effect, up to three dwellings
of up to three storeys can be developed on a property in Christchurch without needing
to apply for a resource consent, as long as all other rules have been met.
Not all parts of Christchurch are suitable for the MDRS, so we’re proposing special
rules, called Qualifying Matters, apply to recognise heritage and cultural features, to
protect major utility, infrastructure, and people in areas vulnerable to natural hazards,
among other things.
What we’re proposing
We’re proposing important changes to the city’s planning rulebook, the District Plan, via two plan changes – the Housing and Business Choice
Plan Change (Plan Change 14), and the Heritage Plan Change (Plan Change 13). Both plan changes were formally notified on 17 March 2023.
Replacing some existing residential zones in
the city with two new ones – a Medium-Density
Residential Zone and a High-Density Residential
Zone. The Medium-Density zone is the baseline for
increasing housing in our city. The High-Density
zone would allow apartment buildings and multistorey
flats in the central city.
Increased height limits for residential and
commercial buildings in and around the
central city, suburban centres and along public
transport routes, as well as enabling residential
development in some industrial areas around the
central city and larger suburban centres.
Special rules (Qualifying Matters) to limit greater
development of housing and business under
the MDRS, in order to better reflect our city’s
environment and climate. One proposes changing
recession planes to increase sunlight access from
what would be possible under the MDRS. This
applies citywide and means the MDRS won’t come
into effect for Christchurch until 2024, when Plan
Change 14 is decided on.
Heritage that should be protected, with a number
of new buildings, items and interiors added to
the Schedule of Significant Historic Heritage.

Dan’s dilemma as milestone looms

Dan Vann faces a dilemma this
weekend.
He is three wickets away from
reaching a milestone of 500 for
the club. But his team needs to
bat the majority of Saturday’s
match against Lancaster Park to
avoid relegation to division 1 next
season.
That means he may not get
much chance to bowl in the last
game of the season, and to complicate
matters, the 39-year-old
may not return next season.
He is thinking of playing less
cricket next season, and filling
in for the club’s top side when
needed.
The humble club man – who
is more than just a bowler – says
Saturday’s focus is on the team’s
result, not him. Vann is also the
team’s player-coach, vice-captain,
the club captain, and in charge of
the side’s gear.
“If we can win or draw this
week, we don’t get relegated,”
Vann said.
“Ideally we’ll bat for most of
the day, but hopefully I can get
some overs in later in the day.”
He didn’t bowl any overs last
week, but said this was due
to the tidy efforts by Nawid
Mohammady (4/38), Ben Hall
(2/7) and Boston Fielding (2/17) –
not because he was injured.
Going into the last week of the
season, Sumner are 8/1 in their
second innings against Lancaster
Park, after they were bowled
out for 168. Lancaster Park only
managed 108 runs, and face a
season in division 1 if they
are unable to chase Sumner’s
total.
If Vann can reach the 500
wicket milestone on Saturday he
will be finishing a memorable
season on a high note. He
brought up 400 appearances
for the club in October, and
has played for Sumner’s
championship and senior A
sides since making his debut in
2002.
He is also the club’s highestever
wicket taker.
Vann said playing, running
his cricket coaching business
and teaching physical education
part-time at Chisnallwood
Intermediate has become too
much to balance next season.
The life member first started
playing for Sumner as a 17-yearold
student at Linwood College
(now Te Aratai College), and 22
years later, is a prominent name
in club records.
As well as leading wicket taker,
Vann has also made the secondmost
appearances for Sumner
after Ray Steele’s 428.
He has taken five wickets and

scored a century on the same day
for Sumner, and has career-best

“I started off quite low down
the batting order and not
bowling heaps when I first
started, and it wasn’t until I was
21 that I was making some runs
and getting wickets,” he said.
“It took a while.”
Sumner will continue the
second day of their last match
this season at St Albans Park
from 10.30am on Saturday.
Geek eases technology woes with free clinic

Bureau Christchurch area has
been helping the community
with their tech troubles.
Run by Weonsuk Lee from
Geeks on Wheels for over a year,
the free help clinic is available on
the last Wednesday of the month,
from 1-2pm at the Salvation
Army building on Colombo St
in Sydenham. No appointment is
needed.
Lee helps people with a range
of issues, from smartphone setups
and account issues to faulty
laptops. He said running the help
sessions has been rewarding and
each clinic brings different people
with unique tech issues.
“It always feels good to help
someone and make their life a
little easier,” said Lee.
CAB Christchurch area
manager Kate Verpoorten said
they see many clients who are
facing access barriers to services,
one of the reasons for this being
digital exclusion.
“Last year over 140 clients
identified that they were digitally
excluded. Many of these were due
to a lack of confidence in using
technology,” she said.
The clinics are a great resource
for those less confident with
technology.
“Clinics such as these provide
a pathway to help these people
without cost,” Verpoorten said.

Thousands of runners and walkers flooded the streets for the city’s most iconic fun run – the
Les Mills City2Surf. The event went back to the future on Sunday, returning to its original
pre-quake course. The 12km run started in the central city and the 6km at Avon Park. The
course winded through the east to Rawhiti Domain where prizes and certificates were
presented. Star Media regional manager Steve McCaughan congratulated everyone who
took part in the fun run. “The 2023 Les Mills City2Surf was a resounding success and the

One-pot green dahl
This is a one-pot wonder that
we often make for Sunday night
dinner at our house. Nourishing
and wholesome, it really sets
us up for the week ahead. I’ve
added extra greens here with
some Swiss chard, but you could
easily swap this for spinach,
beet leaves or even a couple of
handfuls of peas, if that’s what
you have to hand. Gluten free,
dairy free, vegan/vegetarian.
Serves 4
Ingredients
1 shallot or ½ medium white
onion, sliced
1 Tbsp coconut oil or mild olive
oil
1 large piece of fresh root ginger
(about 3cm), peeled and grated
2 cloves garlic, grated
1 green chilli, deseeded and
chopped
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp ground coriander
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp ground turmeric
300g dried black/brown lentils
1 × 400ml tin of coconut milk
200g Swiss chard, washed and
roughly chopped
Natural or dairy-free yoghurt,
to serve (optional)
Fresh coriander, chopped
Directions
In a shallow saucepan, fry the
shallot or onion in the coconut
or olive oil over a medium heat
for 5 minutes, until it starts to
soften and caramelise, stirring
occasionally.
Add the ginger, garlic and
chilli and all of the spices, and
fry for another 5 minutes, stirring
often.
Mix in the lentils, coconut
milk and 650ml water.
Bring to the boil, reduce the
heat and simmer for about 40–50
minutes, stirring occasionally,
until the lentils are soft and the
water absorbed. Add the Swiss
chard and cook for 5 minutes,
until wilted.
Season to taste with salt
and pepper. Serve warm with
a little yoghurt (or dairy-free
alternative) swirled through,
if you fancy, and coriander
sprinkled on top.
Best black bean burger
This is definitely the best bean
burger I have made and I’ve
made a lot. The recipe was
inspired by a wonderful bean
burger on Sally’s Baking
Addiction blog, but I’ve reduced
the number of ingredients.
Vegetarian, gluten free.
Makes 4
Ingredients
2 × 400g tins of black beans,
drained and rinsed
1 Tbsp olive oil, plus extra for
drizzling
½ red pepper, deseeded and
roughly chopped
1 shallot or small onion,
roughly chopped
220g mushrooms, roughly
chopped
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1½ tsp ground cumin
½ tsp sweet smoked paprika
½ tsp dried mixed herbs
65g breadcrumbs (use glutenfree,
if necessary)
80g feta, crumbled
1 large free-range egg
1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
Directions
Preheat the oven to 150degC
fan/170degC.
Spread the drained beans on
a baking tray and bake for 15
minutes until slightly dried out.
(This is important.) Add the oil
to a medium-large saucepan
over a medium-high heat. Add
the pepper, shallot or onion,
mushrooms, garlic, cumin,
paprika and mixed herbs and
saute for around 8 minutes until
soft. Remove from the heat and
set aside to cool a little.
Place the sauteed vegetables
and all the remaining
ingredients, including a good
pinch of salt and grind of pepper,
in a large food processor and
pulse until combined, leaving
some larger chunks.
Using wet hands (as it helps
prevent the mixture sticking),
shape the mixture into 6 patties
(each roughly 8–10cm). Line
a baking tray with parchment
paper and place the patties on
top. Put the tray in the fridge
for a couple of hours, to help the
