Benidorm
Benidorm has gained a unique reputation as the city with the highest density of
skyscrapers in the world. With 345 buildings of more than 12 stories per inhabitant,
it is often referred to as “little Manhattan.” The city’s skyline is characterized
by a cluster of tall buildings, which are primarily used by the tourism industry.
This impressive feat of urbanization started in the 1950s when numerous highrise
apartment buildings were built to accommodate the influx of tourists visiting
the area. Today, Benidorm has become a popular tourist destination, and its skyline
of towering buildings is a testament to its success.
One of the most notable buildings in Benidorm is the Intempo skyscraper, which
was completed in 2021 after more than a decade of delays. With a height of 202.5
meters and 47 floors, it is the tallest residential building in the European Union.
Unfortunately, due to the Spanish real estate crisis of 2008, the Intempo building
stood empty for over a decade before finally being completed.
Benidorm’s skyline and urban landscape have not been without controversy, as
some argue that the concentration of high-rise buildings has had negative impacts
on the city’s environment and quality of life. However, the city’s government
has taken steps to address these concerns, such as implementing stricter
building codes and regulations.
Despite the challenges, Benidorm’s skyscraper-dominated skyline has become
an iconic part of the city’s identity and a testament to its success in the tourism
industry. As the city continues to grow and evolve, it will be interesting to see how
it balances its need for development with its desire to preserve its unique urban
landscape.
