Benidorm

Benidorm has gained a unique reputation as the city with the highest density of

skyscrapers in the world. With 345 buildings of more than 12 stories per inhabitant,

it is often referred to as “little Manhattan.” The city’s skyline is characterized

by a cluster of tall buildings, which are primarily used by the tourism industry.

This impressive feat of urbanization started in the 1950s when numerous highrise

apartment buildings were built to accommodate the influx of tourists visiting

the area. Today, Benidorm has become a popular tourist destination, and its skyline

of towering buildings is a testament to its success.

One of the most notable buildings in Benidorm is the Intempo skyscraper, which

was completed in 2021 after more than a decade of delays. With a height of 202.5

meters and 47 floors, it is the tallest residential building in the European Union.

Unfortunately, due to the Spanish real estate crisis of 2008, the Intempo building

stood empty for over a decade before finally being completed.

Benidorm’s skyline and urban landscape have not been without controversy, as

some argue that the concentration of high-rise buildings has had negative impacts

on the city’s environment and quality of life. However, the city’s government

has taken steps to address these concerns, such as implementing stricter

building codes and regulations.

Despite the challenges, Benidorm’s skyscraper-dominated skyline has become

an iconic part of the city’s identity and a testament to its success in the tourism

industry. As the city continues to grow and evolve, it will be interesting to see how

it balances its need for development with its desire to preserve its unique urban

landscape.

History

Benidorm has a long history as a fishing village, but it

wasn’t until the 1960s that it began to become a popular

tourist destination. The city’s location on the Mediterranean

and its warm climate made it an ideal destination

for visitors seeking sun, sea, and sand. With the growing

popularity of the city, more and more hotels and apartments

were built, leading to the high skyline that is characteristic

of the city today.

Geography

Benidorm is a popular tourist destination located on the eastern

coast of Spain, in the province of Alicante. The town is divided

into five parts: Poniente, Levante, the old town (El Castell), La

Cala, and El Rincón de Loix. Each of these parts has its own

unique character and attractions.

Poniente and Levante are the two main beaches that front the

town. Poniente is situated to the west, and Levante to the east.

They are both long, wide beaches with soft golden sand and

clear blue waters. These beaches offer a range of water sports

activities, such as jet-skiing, windsurfing, and parasailing.

The old town of Benidorm is located on a rocky promontory,

occupying the area immediately inland. It is a maze of narrow

streets, lined with whitewashed houses, traditional shops, and

restaurants serving local cuisine. The old town is also home to

several historic buildings and landmarks, including the Church

of Saint James and the Castle of Benidorm.

La Cala is a small cove situated to the west side of Poniente. It is

a quiet and peaceful place, perfect for swimming and sunbathing.

El Rincón de Loix is located to the east side of Levante. It is

a more modern part of town, with many high-rise hotels, apartment

buildings, and shopping centers.

Between the two beaches lies a rocky promontory, which is

home to the port of Benidorm. The port is a busy place, with

fishing boats, yachts, and pleasure boats coming and going throughout the

day.

One of the most iconic landmarks of Benidorm is the Benidorm Island, also

known as Peacock Island. This uninhabited island is located a few miles

from the shore and provides a dramatic centrepiece to the seascape.

In 1954, Pedro Zaragoza Orts, the young Mayor of Benidorm, created the

Plan General de Ordenación, a city building plan that ensured every building

would have an area of leisure land. This plan has helped to prevent the

excesses of cramped construction seen in other areas of Spain. Benidorm is

the only city in Spain that still adheres to this rigid rule.

The streets in Benidorm are mostly named after places, such as Avenida de

Uruguay, Avenida del Mediterráneo, and Calle Pekín. Avenida del Mediterráneo

is a wide avenue that crosses Levante and links the old town with

Rincón. Avenida Europa crosses Levante at right angles, linking the western

city limits with the Levante beach.

Benidorm is well-connected to the rest of Spain, with a railway line operated

by FGV. The section between Alicante and Benidorm is now converted

to tram operation, with trams running at least every half an hour.

Trains run hourly from Benidorm to Dénia, connecting with the trams at

Benidorm station.

In conclusion, Benidorm is a vibrant and exciting town that has something

to offer for everyone. Its unique character and attractions make it a popular

tourist destination for people from all over the world. Whether you're looking

for a relaxing beach holiday, a cultural experience, or a lively nightlife,

Benidorm has it all.

Its climate is classified as a hot semi-arid climate, which means

that it has mild winters and hot summers. The city receives

slightly more than 300 mm in precipitation per year, and the

wettest season is the mid-late autumn, which prevents it from

being classified as Mediterranean.

Benidorm is blessed with more than 2,800 hours of sunshine

per year, making it an ideal destination for sun worshippers. The

average annual temperature is around 18.5 °C (65.3 °F), which

makes it a comfortable destination for tourists all year round.

During the winter months, the typical maximum temperatures

average around 17 °C (63 °F), while the typical lows average

around 8 °C (46 °F). The temperature oscillation is small, being

even smaller during summers.

During the summer months, the maximum temperatures

normally range from 28 to 32 °C, while the lows range from 20

to 24 °C. In almost all of the summer months, the average city

minimum temperatures at night remain above 20 °C (68 °F), a

phenomenon referred to as tropical night. This makes the summer

months in Benidorm hot and humid, with little relief from

the heat during the night.

Despite the high temperatures, the sea breeze helps to cool down

the city, making it a perfect destination for people looking to

escape the colder weather during the winter months. The
