Michael Milne, a proud Offaly man has had a season to remember so far. The loosehead prop has played a pivotal role all season in the Leinster Rugby front row as well as earning a call up to the Emerging Ireland squad in October, made a first European appearance in January, and was given a call up to the Ireland Six Nations squad in February. Having missed most of last season through injury, it’s been exactly what the Offaly man was hoping for. “Last year, I missed nine months through injury. So to be honest, I just set out to have a good pre-season,” says Milne. “I just wanted to make sure my body was right to give me a chance. Then, when you start coming to the end of preseason, you start making new goals for the season. “But, my main goal was to stay fit and play games.” After a long layoff last season, it was against tonight’s opponents that Milne made his return towards the end of last season on our first URC trip to South Africa. “It was incredible getting to go over to Durban and Cape Town for the tour after the injury. Getting on against the Stormers was great. It was a nice way to finish the injury layoff. “It was such a class stadium. Things are done differently over there. I remember there were loads of cheerleaders on the pitch before the game and it was a party atmosphere. It was amazing to get back on the pitch.” With a solid pre-season under his belt, the Birr RFC man made the matchday squad for the season opener away to Zebre. Now up and running, he received a call to travel back to South Africa with the Emerging Ireland side. It was an opportunity for younger players to work with the senior Irish coaches and one which Milne relished. “Going over there and getting to work within the Irish setup was class. It really opened your eyes as to why Ireland are so good because they create a brilliant environment. “Everyone wants to be learning from each other and you can see why lads love playing for Ireland. “It was very much like that for us for the two weeks in South Africa. It was a lot of young lads so it was great fun too.” After starting in the 28-21 win over the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein, Milne hit the ground running on his return to Leinster. He played against Scarlets, Glasgow Warriors, Connacht and Ospreys, as well as touching down under the posts against Glasgow. It was the type of run he was hoping for. www.leinsterrugby.ie | 89
