Some Tiny Morsels to savour in April
Take a 'Captain
Cook' at Mona Vale
Cook Terrace, Mona Vale Surf Club’s
bar, is offering casual eats on Fridays
after work and on Sundays from 3 to
7pm. Scan the QR code and the orders
come from the Basin Dining Room,
which is also located in the club. The
current menu features two classics,
beer-battered fish and chips and
American-style burgers.
New Av one-stop
sandwich shop
Avalon’s got a new sandwich bar.
During the day, Old Skool occupies LJ
Pizza Bar’s space to make a selection
of old-school sandwiches, hamburgers
and egg and bacon rolls. The chilled
cabinet also has room for containers
of Greek salad and one of those real
old-fashioned favourites, homemade
rice pudding.
Being flaky:
it's never
tasted so good
Be warned, Roti Pies’ Royal
Tiger beef rendang pie
packs a meaty bite. Pies
from this Newport hole-inthe-wall
are a little different
too. Instead of pastry,
each pie is encased in roti.
Fillings change weekly;
however the butter chicken
pie is a winner and has been
on the menu since opening
in 2018.
Stylish kiosk makes
waves beside Dunes
Dunes Kiosk is the much more casual
little sister to the stylish restaurant
next door. Depending on the time of
day, the Governor Phillip Park venue
has munchies like bircher muesli, vegan
hash browns or avo on sourdough
for breakfast and beer-battered fish
burgers, paninis and salads for lunch.
Three of a kind: Turning Japanese
Heaped teriyaki bowls are
a lunchtime drawcard at
Newport’s Sankaku Izakaya.
The restaurant’s $15 options
include teriyaki chicken
or eggplant (pictured).
Both come with shredded
cabbage, carrot, salad,
cucumber, rice drizzled with
a sesame dressing. There’s
also a mixed sashimi bowl
and chicken katsu curry.
Avalon’s Ninja Japanese
Restaurant has been an
Avalon stalwart since 2003.
Open in the evenings, its
menu has a selection of
popular entrees including
pork gyoza with dipping
sauce, sashimi and nigiri
sushi, assorted tempura and
inside out sushi rolls. There’s
a kids menu. BYO wine is an
option too.
Cafe Monaka has Mona
Vale’s Japanese food cravings
covered. This popular cafe
serves katsu curry bowls
and karaage chicken and
chips for lunch, but it also
has a typical Japanese-style
breakfast on the menu.
Asagohan features marinated
grilled salmon with steamed
rice, omelette, pickles and
miso soup.
