Happy Spring Everyone,
I am hoping for a happy spring!! Have you seen
spring in your area? I am ready! We had the hardest
winter we have ever had since we moved to the
country twenty two years ago. There has never been
8 to 10 foot snow drifts covering our drive. I attribute
that problem to the 10 windmills they put just north
of our place last summer. It was so hard to get to the
barn to take care of our bunnies. Unloading feed was
a nightmare! So spring will be a welcome site!!
I finally got to go to a couple shows. However, the
last show ended with us getting hit by an animal on
the highway and wrecking the front of our van.
Therefore, we will not be attending shows right now
and that includes NMRRC nationals. If you are able to
attend please send me lots of pictures for the
newsletter.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my
husband Jerry for finding a new printing company to
print the last newsletter. I hope everyone enjoyed
their printed copy.
Happy Spring and may you have winners in your nest
boxes.
Greetings and Happy Spring!
Depending on where you live around the country I am
sure you are excited for brighter sunny days ahead.
Where I live in Michigan we were very fortunate this
winter. We had a what I would consider as a very mild
winter. I am however looking forward to longer days
and better conception rates in the barn. I hope you all
are having great luck breeding in preparation for the
100 Annual ARBA National Convention in Louisville.
As you may have read in last quarters NMRRC
Newsletter, the legendary Doug King has decided to step
down from his board position as secretary. I am
saddened by this news as I am not sure I recall a time
where Doug and I were not on the board together. I
would like to thank Doug for his many years of service to
the NMRRC and look forward to his continued
involvement and support relaxing in the show room as
an exhibitor. On the other hand, it is an exciting time for
the club as we welcome a new energized secretary with
new ideas to the board. Congratulations and Welcome
to Bridget Forman on her new appointment as secretary
of the NMRRC. Bridget will continue to use
nmrrcsecretary@gmail.com to manage club business.
In any organization the leadership is often looking at
succession planning and the NMRRC is no different. As
you just read Doug King has stepped down as the
NMRRC Secretary. Ethan Harvill has also decided to take
a step back as District Director as he works to finish up
his schooling. Mark Charles our current Vice President
has offered to take the District 6 Director in which will
open the position of Vice President. As I look forward
and think about my future within the organization, I
know my time as President at some point will come to
an end. When that time comes we need to be prepared
as an organization to have someone in line that is
interested in taking on the office of President. With that
being said, I am looking for an involved member that is
interested in taking on the office of Vice President with
the intention of becoming President in the future. If this
is of interest to you please let me know so we can
discuss further.
We are always looking for members to get involved.
Please reach out if you are interested in serving on a
committee or if you would like to learn more about
running for office.
We are just weeks away from our annual national show
in Columbus Ohio. The entry portal is open. The portal
can be used to enter rabbits and purchase banquet
tickets. I am excited once again for our awards from PM
Graphix. If you are in the market for awards look them
up! PM-Graphix.com. The Ohio Mini Convention has
decided to hold a double all breed show on Saturday.
The NMRRC would highly encourage you to NOT enter
the OSRBA shows on Saturday. National show judging
will take priority and any rabbits not in their coops will
be scratched from the show. National show classes will
not be held up due to animals showing in OSRBA.
OSRBA is also a carrying case show this year with the
option to coop. NMRRC National and Specialty show
animals have cooping included in your entry fee. You do
not need to reserve coops through OSRBA. If you have
any questions please email NMRRCnational@gmail.com
Looking forward to seeing everyone for a fun show.
Bridget Forman
secretary
Nmrrcsecretary@gmail.com
Hello everyone,
My name is Bridget Forman and I have raised Mini Rex
for a little over 20 years now. My husband and I, along
with our three children, two dogs and too many rabbits
(according to my husband) live on a farm in Wisconsin.
My mother, Marta and I show as a partnership and my
daughter is finally old enough to show in Youth. Like
many of you, I kind of grew up within this hobby and
now as a mother it’s quite special to be able to share it
with my children.
Over the years I have held a Youth Director position,
was extremely involved in our county’s 4H rabbit
project, held many positions within our local rabbit club
including Secretary, VP, and President along with being
the Superintendent of our annual youth show for many
years. I am currently a Director for the Midwest Mini
Rex Club.
I am looking forward to this new chapter as Secretary
and want to thank the Board of Directors for allowing
me this opportunity. Transition is never easy and there
may be some hiccups along the way so please be
patient as I learn the ropes.
Hi as I look forward to meeting more of our great
members. See you in Ohio!
Thank you,
Bridget Forman
Please send all correspondance to:
Email: NMRRCsecretary@gmail.com
Writing this actual is bittersweet because as much as I
look forward to representing the club as Secretary, it is
sad seeing Doug move on from a position he has held
most of my years in this hobby. Over the years he has
been a wonderful and supportive advocate for our
breed and invested countless hours into helping make
this club the success that it is, and I thank him for that.
With spring finally here, I hope mother nature will start
treating us all a little bit better because I for one am
ready for sunshine and warm temperatures. Nationals
is right around the corner so make sure to check the
website for updates and do not forget about the entry
deadline. Many of you have probably seen me around
at shows but if we haven’t met feel free to stop and say
Hello Mini Rex Friends,
It’s been a very long and snowy winter in MN. Calendar says spring is around the corner but the ground is still a
vastness of white. I’m looking forward to warmer temps and green scenery.
The 2023 National show in Columbus, OH will be here before we know it. I hope everyone is eagerly making
preparations. The NMRRC is hosting and it should be a well attended and fun event.
Greeting from the Pacific Northwest. I hope everyone is
well and you were able to fill your nest boxes with
seniors for convention! I tried to get ambers for the
first time in a while by breeding a castor to a chocolate.
I was trying to get a leg up on the agouti pattern. But
no, the genetic genie was in the barn that day. I got
castors, a black, a blue, and a blue otter. But no
ambers . Go figure!
The Pacific Crest Mini Rex Club held their first
specialty show of the year on February 24th at the
Wanderlust show in Stevenson, Washington. Even
though the weather in the west was more like the
weather in the east, many people attended.
Congratulations go out to Joe Kim for BOB with a senior
broken doe and Cassidy Shelton for BOSB with a senior
black buck. The club also hosted a hospitality booth for
all exhibitors to
include
complimentary
coffee and hot
chocolate, along
with all sorts of
other treats. It
was definitely
enjoyed by all.
That’s about all I
have for now. I
hope to see lots
of mini Rex
breeders at
upcoming shows
in the next few
months and keep
filling those nest
boxes.
Armando Cabrerra
mandojudg@aol.com
Arizona - California - Hawaii - Mexico - Nevada -
Greetings District 2:
I hope everyone is doing well and fairing well through this
Intense Winter. All of our District 2 States have been
overtaken by incredible amounts of rain or snowfall, and in
some cases BOTH! Thankfully, my part of California has
been spared by many of the major storms that have hit hard
all around us and hope that the rest of you and your animals
are doing well too.
I hope everyone is getting ready to fly or drive to Ohio for
our National Show, May 5-7, 2023. The Ohio Mini
Convention is always a great big show and I'm sure we will
have a great time showing our beautiful mini rex there.
Yours truly is hopeful I will have an entry for the first time in
YEARS! Now that I'm judging less, I hope to spend more
time in the barn breeding and showing rabbits! I'm very
excited about being an exhibitor again! :)
I hear rumblings that this Winter has been tough for getting
does bred, and those that do are having very small litters
that either freeze or moms decide not to take care of them.
As we all know, Winter is not a normal time for rabbits to
breed, so it's important that you provide proper shelter,
good quality feed, in slightly larger amounts, and plenty of
fresh water, along with loads of straw for nest boxes, to help
ensure moms stay healthy, comfortable, and willing to take
care of their young. If it's wide-spread in your heard, it
wouldn't hurt to reach out to your feed dealer, or mill, and
inquire if anyone else from your area is complaining about
the same thing; along with environment concerns, the above
issues could also be signs of nutritional deficiencies in bad
feed. Otherwise, the best advise I can give you is to keep
actively trying; the more attempts you make to breed
animals, the more possibilities for successful litters.
Please feel free to reach out if you have questions or
concerns with club business. I look forward seeing you all at
future shows.
Respectfully yours,
Armando Cabrera
Hello Everyone-
NMRRC Publication Quarter 2 April-May-June 2023
I hope everyone is having a productive year of Winter
litters! :)
It's very important that I make all breeders aware of an
important rule that may affect the future of some of our
mini rex varieties. Per page 31 in the SOP, at least 25 rabbits
in a particular breed/variety must be exhibited at ARBA
National Convention Shows (open and youth combined)
during the five year period immediately preceding January 1
of the final year of the existing SOP for retention in the next
SOP. Animals disqualified or Unworthy of an Award are not
counted. As the 2020 ARBA Convention was canceled, the
totals will include counts from the 2021-2024
Conventions. In reviewing the numbers after last year's
ARBA Convention, I am concerned the below varieties may
be dropped if we don't meet the 25 rabbit minimum
requirement:
11
Lynx - 16 Shown; we need 9 more shown
Sable Point - 8 Shown; we need 17 more shown
Silver Marten - 20 Shown; we need 5 more shown
If you own/show any of the above varieties of mini rex, you
need to show them at the ARBA Convention in Louisville, KY
this year. If you're not able to attend, please do your best to
arrange for someone to show them on your behalf or find
transportation for them and have someone care for them for
you at Convention. If you want your variety to remain an
active, showable variety, the minimum required animals
must be shown.
Please feel free to reach out to me if I can be of further
assistance to you on this topic. I will gladly make myself
available to care for your animals, of any of these varieties,
to help ensure we get the numbers we need at the ARBA
Convention in Louisville, KY.
Respectfully submitted,
Hello everyone and Happy Spring! I hope you all had a
good, quick Winter. I am very excited to say goodbye to
Winter and hello to Spring! Does are finally receptive,
babies are growing up, and Nationals is getting closer and
closer. I look forward to these next few weeks going by fast
to see everyone at nationals, but I know we all need the
extra time for coats to finish. I think we are going to have a
great turn out in Columbus, Ohio this year, especially being
a little more central. Even if you do not show, Nationals is a
great time to meet new breeders, grow connections, and
find some new stock. This is the best time to have
conversations with like-minded breeders and learn new
things. I always get home after Nationals, extremely
motivated and ready to keep putting the pieces of the
puzzle together.
In the Midwest, we have had some very successful
showings with at least 100 open and 100 youth in each
show. Most recently, the Midwest Mini Rex Club hosted
our Mini Rex Extravaganza Specialty shows in Jefferson, WI.
It was a huge success! One of the most exciting parts of the
weekend was seeing seven youth win a new rabbit from
our Youth Raffle. The smiles and excitement of these
kiddos never gets old. Thank you to everyone who donated
to the Youth Raffle and to the silent auction. Macy Tolley
donated a beautiful painting to our Open Raffle. If you are
interested in rabbit art or getting a special rabbit painted,
reach out to Macy Tolley! I am happy to connect you with
her. Overall, we raised a lot of money for our club. I hope
everyone had as much fun as I did!
sooner as you do not want them to pull a nail out, which
may not grow back in time. I know some fellow breeders
who will give extra supplements to their show team 4-8
weeks before each big show too. Also, when it comes to
feeding, I will take time to check weights often for rabbits
that might be close to max weight. Keep a close eye on how
rabbits look and feel before and after they eat. One of the
worst feelings at a National is when your rabbit gets DQ’d
for weight, and you kick yourself because you actually
could have put more effort into avoiding that happening. A
good trick for a rabbit that could go overweight before the
big day is pulling their water and food the night before. Do
not feed or water them on show day. If you really want to
give them something to eat, give them a little hay as it will
not make them gain weight. As always, if you have any
questions about Nationals, feel free to reach out.
I look forward to seeing everyone at Nationals!
Allyse
As I prepare for Nationals, there are a handful of things I
am focusing on. First, I like to worm my herd at least 6-8
weeks before each National and Convention. They might
blow coats, so this gives them enough time to finish. I will
also groom my entire show team every day for a month
straight to get them ready. I will cut nails the week before
as well. However, do not be afraid to cut them much
Nationals 2023 is approaching fast and everyone is
working on last minute preparations for their
Conditing, and selecting their entries. I want to wish
everybody good luck. With that being said I really
love seeing all my friends that I only see once or
twice a year. It is so much fun to look at other
exhibitors rabbits and compare what you need to
work on such as coat texture, density, type etc. one
judge might prefer one type and another prefers a
different type, the first to tenth place rabbits can go
in other parts of the country and receive a Bis or ris.
I never let a judge decide which rabbits I might keep
for breeding as I had a doe that I never got a leg on,
her coat was a little rough but she threw me more
grand champions than a doe I had that had 33 legs.
It’s all about which 2 rabbits that you pair together to
complement each others faults.
I have done extremely good with my rabbits this
spring and it’s always nice to win but my competitors
have awesome rabbits and I am blessed each time
my rabbits win. That can always change when one
person raises that one awesome rabbit that’s a
ringer. Always tell the winner or winner’s
congratulations because when it’s your turn to win
you sure want to know that someone recognizes
your hard work.
Good luck my friends in the shows to come and I will
see you down the road.
Hi Everyone,
The arctic cold snap is behind most of us and the animals
and myself are enjoying the warmer temperatures.
Fortunately the well below 0 temperatures only lasted a
couple of days in Southern Illinois. I fed the rabbits a
little extra food during that time and they did fine. I don’t
have a climate controlled barn and dealing with frozen
water bowls is the hardest part during winter. I gave them
warm water to drink at least twice a day and no one went
off of feed. I am looking forward to consistent warmer
weather and having longer daylight hours to result in
consistent breedings and successful litters.
The spring show season has officially started and
Nationals will be upon us before we know it. Information
can be found in the newsletter, on the club website, and
on the club Facebook page. Donations are needed for the
silent auction. If you do not have an item to donate, you
can help by bidding and/or purchasing an item. Good luck
to all attending!
MARK CHARLES
nmrrcd6director@gmail.com
Alabama - Georgia - Florida - Louisiana - Mississippi -
March 2023
Hello everyone,
We are really looking forward to Ohio! It has been way
too long since we visited with our bunny family.
Everything seems to be quiet with the club right now.
We do have a new board member that will be joining us
shortly…please take a few moments and make them feel
welcome.
I have thought and thought about what a good topic for
this article would be. We haven’t attended many shows
lately so I really had nothing to report from that end.
The weather in our area has been fairly mild so that was
a moot point for us.
Then a few days ago we had to make one of the hardest
decisions there is to make when you own livestock.
When to know they have reached the point where their
quality of life is just not there. It becomes a decision
that can break your heart.
Sometimes you just have to do what is best for the rabbit
even when you would very much prefer they stay with
you…as selfish as it may seem. It is never easy to make
that call but sometimes they just let you know. We truly
love our rabbits and do everything that is in our power to
take the very best care of them we possibly can. In the
end though we try not to become too attached to any one
individual rabbit unless they have earned a long term
spot in our barn. In this case it was one of those special
ones, Kings Bluebell. When we made the decision to
begin raising and showing mini rex again we reached out
to Doug King. Needless to say, he helped us with no
hesitation to begin to rebuild our Castor breeding
program. Kings Bluebell ended up being one of the
most instrumental bucks in our herd, he not only was
one of the most personable bucks in our barn, but he was
also ALWAYS ready to breed and if we trace most of
the bunnies in our barn now, he is in there somewhere.
When we were missing a piece of the puzzle in almost
any breeding we did, Bluebell could fix it. That being
said…his legacy will live on in our barn for many
generations to come.
Over the years we’ve learned that it is best not to get too
attached to our bunnies, breeding rabbits and culling to
improve your line go hand in hand. You will breed, you
will make mistakes, you will have injured rabbits, old
rabbits, sick rabbits and in the end, culling must be a part
of the process. In our experience, to do our jobs
properly as herd managers we must be somewhat
detached to make the decisions that have to be made to
keep our breeding program moving forward.
Everyone has a little different way of operating their
rabbitry, we love our animals and take the very best care
of them. That includes getting them the best quality
food we can even if we must ship it in. Just for FYI that
is no chump change I promise you. The rabbits have
given us so much enjoyment that it’s hard to describe,
they have given us a hobby we can enjoy together,
travels to places we never would have gone to and
friends and family all over this country that we could not
even have imagined and that would not be possible
without them. So, the bottom line is it’s okay to fall in
love with your rabbits but know that your heart is going
to be broken somewhere down the line.
Remember it takes all of us actively participating to keep
our hobby and club alive, if you can please volunteer for
leadership roles and help the local clubs with the
enormous job it is to put on a show.
Also, if you see a new breeder take the time to answer
questions, help them out, introduce them to the Mini Rex
club, remember we were all that NEW breeder at some
point in our journey.
Looking forward to seeing everyone in Ohio!
Blessings,
New York - New Hampshire - Vermont - Massachusetts -
Hello NMRRC!
Spring is finally on the horizon here in the Northeast
once we get past the snow storms of early March. But
the days are longer, the sun is warmer and hopefully our
breeding animals will be ready to roll for our Convention
juniors! Shows here in District 7 are going quite well over
the winter with the limited shows we’ve had put on for
us. Towards the end of February, and the Cayuga Lake
Rabbit & Cavy Festival in Auburn, NY we had over 100
open Mini Rex entries and near 50 youth entries which is
an awesome turnout for our breed in D7! There is a
great amount of energy for the Mini Rex breed in our
neck of the woods. Speaking of energy… there is a new
Mini Rex specialty club to put on everyone’s radar!
Spearheaded by Chris Mageles & Ryan Brehm, we finally
have a specialty club in D7 called the Northeast Mini Rex
Club. My mother (Chris Mageles) will have a little article
in this issue introducing the club, it’s goals, and any
other news or info we feel is important for the NMRRC
general membership to know.
Until next time,
Michael Mageles
Hello From district 8! Seems like winter is hanging on
Show season is picking up and I will share some fb posts
that I have seen from D8 members!
I am hoping to see many members and rabbits the first
Saturday in May at the mini Rex Nationals at the Ohio mini
convention in Ohio! It should be a great weekend
I am working on getting banquet etc lined out for
convention in Louisville in October! We will keep you
posted with banquet information and trio donators after
Greetings Fellow D9 Members!
I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and
the new year is off to a great start. We’ve had a mild
winter and it has been very nice!
Mini Rex numbers have been moderate at most district
nine shows. Youth numbers are a bit low. I think
numbers overall will pick up in the spring as there gets
to be more shows and less concern for bad weather
while traveling!
I hope everyone is getting excited for the 2023
National Mini Rex Show in Columbus, Ohio. Just a
reminder that the dates are May 5th - 7th. This
National is being held in conjunction with Ohio Mini
Convention. I hope to see lots of District 9 members
there!!
If anyone has any news to report, please do not hesitate
to contact me! Also, we are always looking for photos
to be included in the newsletter. So send them in! As
always, I am available to answer any questions or
concerns.
I hope everyone has a fabulous spring and I look
forward to seeing everyone at the National show!
Cheers,
Piper
Youth Corner
Spring is finally here, and hopefully everyone has
been having a good breeding season for Convention.
Along with Spring, now it’s time for us to work on
getting rabbits ready and finished for Nationals. As
you prep for Nationals, don’t forget to order your
banquet tickets. This year they are offering a
children’s buffet (under 10) option, or a youth plated
chicken tenders meal. You can get either option for
only $20, with it being only $40 for the adult option.
The Youth Committee is looking for several nice
quality mini rex to be donated to the Linda
Thompson Memorial Youth Scholarship fund. We are
also looking for a couple unique custom made items
to include in the auction this year. If you are
interested in donating, please contact me on
Facebook or email me (MBRMiniRex@gmail.com).
Just a reminder that this is a silent auction. We will
again be placing tags on cages of rabbits that are
donated, but we ask that you do not handle the
rabbits until after they are moved out of their show
coop and into the auction area.
Also, we will be doing something a little different this
year. For the silent auction we will be placing
pictures of the animals/items online and we will keep
the current bids updated as often as we can. This will
allow those that can’t go to the show an have an
opportunity to bid. All winning bids are due
immediately after the auction closes. Transport is the
responsibility of the buyer, and all rabbits must be
out by the time the Sunday Specialty ends. If you are
having trouble finding the group on Facebook, just
send me a message.
See you in Ohio!
Thank You Doug For your service and dedication to the
Secretary Report March 1, 2023
Hello Everyone,
This article brings a few emotions with it! After 27 years on the Board, but more
specifically over 20 years as secretary, I have decided to leave the Board. Hoping this
will free up a bit of time at Nationals and Conventions and I can enjoy both shows
with a bit less stress. I will still be available to assist our new Secretary Bridget
Forman. She is super capable and we will make the transition as seamless as
possible. Not sure what I am going to do with all my extra time at Nationals this
year….let alone in Kentucky for Convention, let the good times roll!
I would like to thank everyone who has supported me for the last 27 years on the
Board. This club means the world to me and I leave it in great hands.
Looking forward to Columbus!!
Be safe, be kind and I can’t wait for our next encounter!!!
Doug
