AN IMPRESSIVE home in 

Avonhead has left the suburb’s 

previous record for dust, selling 

under the hammer for $2.2 

million, almost $1m more than 

its new RV. 

The five-bedroom, threebathroom 

home on Westall 

Lane was snapped up by out-oftowners 

wanting to secure it as 

their family home. 

There were 

11 registered 

bidders at 

the auction 

last week, 

but only four 

got a chance 

to bid as the

The biggest sale price for 

Avonhead last year was $1.5m 

for a home on Maidstone Rd – 

while the biggest sale price for 

the area overall was $1.95m, 

paid in 2017 for a house on 

Avonhead Rd. 

“And this sold for $2.2m, so 

a quarter of a million dollars 

more,” Heazlewood said. 

“Even through the boom of 

the market there wasn’t even 

anything that touched near this

Library and cafe close for upgrade 

UPPER RICCARTON Library 

and Red Cafe will be closing for 

three weeks while repair and 

refurbishment work takes 

place. 

The library and cafe on Main 

South Rd will be closed from 

Tuesday, April 11 until Sunday, 

April 30 as work to replace the 

bathrooms and upgrade the air 

conditioning, lighting systems 

and paintwork takes place. The 

doors to the learning centre will 

also be replaced. 

The upgrade has been planned 

to coincide with the Riccarton 

High School holidays, however 

some work will continue into the 

first week of the school term. 

The school, which timetables 

some classes into the library 

learning centre, has reallocated 

these to accommodate the work.

Riccarton Library during this 

period, but can be returned to 

any other library across the city 

network. 

The mobile library will visit 

Upper Riccarton Tuesdays 

10.30-11.30am and Fridays 3.30- 

4.30pm throughout the closure 

period. The nearest alternative 

libraries are Fendalton Library 

on the corner of Jeffreys Rd and 

Clyde Rd and Hornby Library on

Dining hall transformed for Grace appeal 

IN A JOINT initiative with St 

Margaret’s College, Christ’s 

College students have supported 

the Love Grace x Handbag 

Appeal 2023. 

In the college dining hall, instead 

of food being packed onto 

plates, essential items – such as 

hair products, tissues, toothpaste 

and sanitary products – were 

packed into handbags for the 

Christchurch Aunties as part 

of the recent Love Grace x Handbag 

Appeal. 

The aunties group mobilises, 

co-ordinates and donates to 

help domestic violence agencies, 

while the Love Grace x Appeal 

aims to empower victims of 

domestic abuse in honour of 

Grace Millane, a young British 

backpacker murdered in 

Auckland. 

Packed by about 30 students, 

the handbags will go to women 

in need of an escape from partner 

or family violence, supplying 

them with personal essentials for 

up to a month to help find safety 

away from harm at home. 

Enthusiastic comments were 

heard around the dining hall, 

with students remarking on the 

importance of knowing “it’ll 

help someone out” and suggesting 

“we should do this again.” 

A rhythm was soon formed 

as everyone started packing the 

handbags, and this continued 

until the very end, with exclamations 

at the sheer volume 

of packing, fist bumps, and 

inspirational comments from the 

aunties. More than 100 handbags 

were packed. 

“To be honest, by the time we 

were nearing the end of the essential 

items, everyone was a bit 

disappointed,” said Christ’s College 

head of service Elliott Grey. 

“We were right into it, and 

everyone loved knowing that 

they were getting stuck into 

something that’ll go a long way.” 

Said students: “We were impressed 

with the effort, and having 

the straightforward task of 

simply stuffing as much stuff in 

a handbag as possible and starting 

again was very satisfying for 

everyone.” 

“We should definitely run 

something like this again 

sometime – all we need are the 

handbags.” 

For Aunties Christchurch 

manager Karon Storr, it was 

great to see the students’ enthusiasm. 

“Set in the glorious college 

dining hall, the teams selected a 

bag and made their way around 

the bins of basic, extra, and 

luxury products until each bag 

was brimming with much aroha, 

support and hope,” she said. 

“It was awesome to find the 

students were so engaged in their 

task and made such a wonderful 

effort to present their filled bags, 

in honour of Grace Millane’s 

memory.”

Sleeping rough raises 

$4k for City Mission 

CHRIST’S COLLEGE students 

have slept outside on the 

quad to highlight the issue of 

homelessness in the city, along 

with raising nearly $4000 for the 

City Mission. 

Organised by Christ’s College 

head of service Elliott Grey and 

head of boarding Lachie Short, 

the overnight sleep-out provided 

the boys with a taste of the 

reality of being homeless. 

A City Mission representative 

spoke about life on the streets 

during assembly in the lead-up 

to the weekend sleep-out, while 

an outreach worker visited 

the boys on the night to share 

his experiences of working to 

support those in need. 

The boys were also joined on 

the quad by executive principal 

Garth Wynne and teacher 

Graeme Swanson. 

“Twenty-five students 

gathered on the quad to sow the 

seeds of a new service tradition 

– Sleepout for Homelessness,” 

said Grey and Short. 

“Raising just under $4000 

for the City Mission, the simple 

goal of the event was to raise 

awareness and funds for the 

incredible efforts of the mission 

to support the homeless across 

Ōtautahi Christchurch. 

FUNDRAISER: Christ’s 

College students spent 

the night on the quad to 

highlight homelessness 

and raise money for the 

City Mission. 

“After mobile phones had been 

handed in, students were armed 

with nothing but warm clothes, 

a sleeping bag, and a tarpaulin, 

to strip away any contact with 

the outside world. 

“It was quickly made apparent 

that it was a rare but beneficial 

detox from the loud and busy 

digital world that surrounds us, 

with some initially finding it 

difficult to adjust.” 

With little sleep because of 

the cool temperatures and the 

lack of a pillow, the sleep-out 

provided a new perspective 

on homelessness for all the 

boys.

The Westall Lane home, which

an RV of $1.38m, was unique for 

the area and 72 groups visited the 

open homes, including families 

from around the city, emptynesters 

and out-of-towners. 

“It was a really lovely home, 

very flexible floor plan, private 

land – big section. People 

thought it was a great house. We 

had such great feedback about it.” 

Heazlewood said the same 

property in one of Christchurch’s 

more high-end suburbs such 

as Fendalton would be worth 

$3.5m. 

“So, I suppose that’s the real 

value for money, but for the area 

of Avonhead it’s a phenomenal 

sale – a lot of people have been 

talking about it over the last 

week.” 

Heazlewood said there seems 

to be increasing demand for good 

homes in Avonhead as a property 

at 24 Felstead Pl, which is in a 

much lower price range than the 

Westall Lane home, has also been 

getting a lot of attention. 

“I can’t put my finger on what 

the major change is – that was a 

good house and drew people into 

the market, but even Felstead Pl 

has had better numbers than we 

are used to seeing at the moment. 

“There’s definitely general 

buyer demand 

but no one 

specifically 

saying why.”

said. The close proximity to the 

airport also helped. 

“A lot of families move in and 

they just stay there because they 

can and a lot of the houses are 

quite substantial so you get some 

good longevity out of the homes.”

Students cap off a stellar summer

Triathlon 

Rangi Ruru’s Charlotte Chiles 

has capped off a successful few 

months with two national titles 

at the New Zealand secondary 

schools’ triathlon championships 

at Glendhu Bay, near Wānaka, 

over the weekend. 

The year 11 student continued 

her stellar form by winning 

the under-16 girls’ race in 

43m 50secs. Chiles was over a 

minute clear of the next fastest 

competitor in the event, which 

included a 500m swim, a 12km 

bike and a 3.75km run. 

She also won the under-16 

aquathon event, finishing in 15m 

42secs. 

Rangi’s mixed team of Chiles 

and Finella Guttmann secured 

silver in the girls’ under-19 super 

sprint event. 

Last month, Chiles came 

second in the intermediate 

girls’ race at the South Island 

secondary schools triathlon 

held in Oamaru, and won the 

under-16 girls’ secondary schools

secondary school champs over 

the weekend, racing home in 

36m 57secs. The under-14 event 

consisted of a 350m swim, a 

10km bike and a 2.5km run.

mixed team were second in the 

super sprint event.

Christchurch Girls’ High 

finished third at the volleyball 

nationals after beating St 

Andrew’s College in the bronze 

medal playoff. 

CGHS won the Canterbury 

and Mainland tournaments 

earlier this month, and went 

into the nationals as top seeds 

for Canterbury, up against 88 

teams. 

They lost one match in pool 

play against Bethlehem College 

(Tauranga), but qualified top of 

their pool due to a high set ratio. 

After a strong 3-0 win against 

Otumoetai College (Tauranga), 

in the quarter finals, CGHS faced 

Rangitoto College (Auckland) in 

their semi-final. 

CGHS started strong with a 

25-20 first set win but lost the 

next three sets to Rangitoto, who 

went on to win the tournament. 

In the other girls’ semi-final, St 

Andrew’s narrowly lost against 

Orewa College 3-1, meaning the 

two Christchurch schools would 

meet in the bronze medal 

match. 

St Andrew’s won the first set 

25-20 but CGHS proved too 

strong, winning the last three 

sets to finish third. 

Rangitoto was the first school 

to win both the girls’ and boys’ 

division 1 grade at the nationals.

The team faced Westlake Boys’

Although Westlake prevailed 

4-2 over Christ’s, two of the three 

matches lost by the Christchurch 

school went to three sets. 

Jack Hansen-Ratter and 

Franklin Barry comfortably won 

their doubles match 6-4, 6-3, 

and Hansen-Ratter also won his 

singles match 7-6, 6-4. 

Liam Barrett and Lucas Evans 

played doubles in the last match 

of the day, and after a hardfought 

three sets, went down to 

Westlake’s pair 6-1, 4-6, 6-10. 

Coach Josh Kim said the 

passionate team didn’t give up 

until the end. 

“I am so proud of their 

commitment. They have shown

rugby administrator Brent 

Goldsmid to help form the 

Canterbury Community Rugby 

Foundation. 

Goldsmid, who has played, 

coached, volunteered and 

administrated rugby for more 

than 40 years, said 

the choice between 

playing rugby or 

not due to financial 

pressures has become 

a real concern for 

him. He established 

the foundation 

to ensure more 

Cantabrians can play 

the game. 

“With a cost of 

living and travel on 

the increase, it’s all 

too often becoming 

a barrier to being involved in 

sport,” he said. 

“But I believe there’s 

plenty of people out there like 

me that have had a wonderful 

rugby experience and enjoy 

life-long friendships because of 

the game are willing and able to 

give back but aren’t sure how to 

do so.” 

The foundation accepts 

donations and bequeaths

grassroots rugby.

subs, boots, travel, anything that

has been opened at Holly Lea 

retirement village in Fendalton. 

The centre incorporates the 

latest advances in personalised 

residential care, including a 

specialised memory support unit.

Term 1 2023 has been an 

exciting start to the year. It was 

interesting to look back at this 

time last year. We had been 

rostering year levels off to cope 

with COVID during Term 1 in 

2022. How times have changed 

and we now seem to be back 

in full swing, albeit with some 

lingering COVID issues. 

We have really enjoyed having 

our full school on-site with lots 

of activities being resumed. 

Re-engaging with many parent 

on-site activities, including the 

BBQ welcome for all Māori 

and Pasifika students and Whānau, Year 13 student and parent evening, Year 

9 Divisional parents evenings, Year 11 NCEA parent evening and Year 9 and 10 

parent evenings. Meeting with whānau is really important as we re-establish 

those face to face connections and relationships. 

In Term 1 we analyse our previous years examination results. Our results continue 

to be strong. Our students perform well above National in their NCEA results. 

Our scholarship results are some of the best in the country, with a number of 

students gaining outstanding scholarships. 

Following the retirement of Phil Holstein, the Principal recruitment process was 

completed at the start of Term. We look forward to welcoming Scott Haines in 

Term 3 as our new Principal. Scott is a highly experienced educator and leader. 

He has served as Principal in two different New Zealand secondary schools 

during the last 14 years, including the past 7 years as Principal of Waimea 

College in Nelson.

With excellent results from Level 3 NCEA, these results were 

equally impressive. 

This year has seen the completion and start to building projects. The 

refurbishment of our swimming pool has been completed. At a time where water 

safety is a continuing priority, this facility is being well-used. It has been great to 

see both students and staff enjoying the new pool. We have also seen the start 

of building our 25 classroom Science and Technology block, Pukehinau. Naylor- 

Love are building this substantial building. This week we have seen the concrete 

pours happening and through time-lapse photography we have been observing 

the progress. This building is due for completion mid 2024. 

As I write this Summer 

Tournament week is in full 

swing. This is the first time 

in two years that we have 

been able to field full teams 

in competitions and send 

them around the country. It 

is a pleasure, once again, 

to see the fulfillment that 

the students get from these 

extra-curricular activities. A 

huge thank-you goes to the 

parents and staff that make 

these activities happen. 

As we begin the April 

holidays, we wish our families 

and communities a restful 

break over Easter time.

Ease into autumn with a pie and pasta 

Nigel Slater takes 

it easy with a tasty 

cheese and onion pie, 

and smoky veggie 

pasta supper 

Sauerkraut, fontina and 

walnut galette 

Serves 4 

Ingredients 

For the pastry: 

250g plain flour 

salt – a large pinch 

1 tsp caraway seeds 

150g butter, cold 

1 egg yolk, beaten 

2 Tbsp iced water 

For the filling: 

2 onions, medium to large 

3 Tbsp olive oil 

250g sauerkraut 

225g fontina, or other firm 

grating cheese 

10g parsley leaves 

100g walnuts 

1 Tbsp grain mustard 

1 egg, beaten 

Directions 

Make the pastry: Put the flour 

in a large mixing bowl and add 

the salt and caraway seeds. Cut 

the butter into small pieces, add 

to the flour, then rub the two 

together with your thumbs and 

fingertips. (Alternatively use 

a food processor.) When you

have a texture that resembles 

fresh breadcrumbs, stir in the 

beaten egg yolk and enough 

iced water (2-3 Tbsp) to bring 

everything together into a soft, 

rollable dough. Wrap and leave 

in the fridge to rest for about 30 

minutes. 

Make the filling: Peel the 

onions and finely slice them into 

rings. Set the oven at 180 deg C. 

Warm the oil in a deep pan set 

over a moderate heat, add the 

onions and let them cook until 

pale gold and soft. This will take 

a good 25 minutes, stirring regularly. 

Add the sauerkraut to the 

softened onions. Coarsely grate 

the cheese and set aside. Roughly 

chop the parsley and the walnuts, 

then stir into the softened 

onions with the mustard. Set 

aside while you form the tart. 

Line a large baking sheet with 

baking parchment. Remove the 

pastry from the fridge and roll 

into a circle 30cm in diameter. 

Carefully lift on to the lined baking 

sheet. Stir the grated cheese, 

reserving some for later, into 

the onions and sauerkraut, then 

season with a little salt and black 

pepper. Pile the filling on to the 

pastry leaving a large gap, about 

6-7cm, around the edge. 

Fold the edge of the pastry 

up and slightly over the filling. 

Brush the pastry rim with beaten 

egg. Scatter the rest of the cheese 

over the top, place in the oven 

and bake for 50-60 minutes until 

golden. 

Leave the tart to rest for 15 

minutes or so before slicing and 

serving. 

Pappardelle with greens 

and yoghurt 

If you want to go dairy-free, 

you could toss the pasta and 

greens with a little chilli oil 

instead. 

Serves 2-3 

Ingredients 

2 onions, medium to large 

3 Tbsp olive oil 

250g chard leaves, or use 

beetroot tops 

200g spinach 

200g pappardelle 

2 cloves garlic 

50g butter 

100ml natural yoghurt 

smoked paprika 

Directions 

Peel the onions and cut them 

into thin rings. Warm the oil in 

a flameproof casserole or a deepsided 

frying pan over a moderate 

heat, add the onions and let them 

cook for about 20-25 minutes, 

stirring occasionally, until soft, 

shiny and deep gold in colour. 

Remove the onions from the pan 

and set aside. 

Wash the chard leaves or beetroot 

tops, then return the onion 

pan to the heat (you can wipe 

it out if you wish, but you really 

don’t need to), then add the 

leaves, still wet from washing. 

Cover tightly and let them cook 

in their own steam for a minute 

or two, then turn the leaves over, 

cook for a minute longer, then 

remove and drain. 

Repeat with the spinach. 

Gently squeeze the water from 

the chard and spinach, then 

roughly chop and add them to 

the onions. 

Bring a deep pan of water to 

the boil. Salt it generously, then 

drop in the pappardelle and leave 

to cook for about 7 minutes or 

until the ribbons of pasta are 

tender. 

Peel and thinly slice the garlic. 

Melt the butter in the empty pan 

in which you cooked the greens 

over a moderate heat, add the 

garlic and let it cook for a couple 

of minutes until it starts to turn 

golden, then add the chopped 

leaves. 

Drain the pasta, leaving about 

50ml of water in the pan, then 

toss it with the onions and 

greens. 

Transfer the onions, greens 

and pasta to shallow bowls, then 

trickle with yoghurt and dust 

with a little smoked paprika.

Ground moisture barrier 

under low sub-floor 

Now with the colder and wetter weather on 

its way, home owners are focusing on ways 

to make their homes comfortable, warm 

and healthy for their families throughout 

winter. Rising damp is an issue that affects 

many of our older properties which suffer 

from poor, or no, ground moisture barrier. 

In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many 

people have relocated to homes that suffer 

from rising damp which can be associated 

with health problems. Independent tests have 

shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise 

from the ground and enter a house every day, 

leading to mildew, mould, condensation and 

musty smells. Moulds can produce various 

allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and 

very young are especially vulnerable.

ground and the inside air temperature falls 

close to the crawl space air temperature. 

Much energy is required to vaporize moisture 

that penetrates the structure. By avoiding 

underfloor condensation, foam concrete can 

reduce floor heat losses by up to 90%.

THERE ARE an ever-increasing 

number of plug-in EVs landing 

in our market, most of them 

sport utility vehicles, and that is 

what the market is demanding. 

However, if it’s a sedan you 

are after and want to explore the 

luxury market, then Mercedes- 

Benz may have the car for you – 

the C350 e – it is a plug-in hybrid 

with a 2-litre petrol engine. 

Even though it joins the C- 

Class series, it lands here in one 

specification only that lists at 

$111,200. It’s around $6000 and 

$23,000 more expensive than its 

non-hybrid counterparts, but it 

will give you fuel usage benefits 

and will travel up to 100km on 

purely electric. 

According to Mercedes-Benz 

the C 350 e will provide a combined 

cycle fuel usage average 

of 1.5-litre per 100km. That is, 

of course, at best possible usage 

– the readouts were listing 

around 7l/100km during my 

testing time, which in real-world 

terms is about as good as you can 

expect on a commute or highway 

run. At 100km/h the engine sips 

fuel at the rate of 5l/100km. 

Under the bonnet sits a fourcylinder 

turbocharged engine. 

This is much the same unit that 

is fitted to the C 200 and C 300, 

although the power outputs 

are down significantly to the 

latter at 150kW against 190kw 

and 320Nm against 400Nm. 

However, when you have another 

95kW and 440Nm from the electric 

motor it’s as strong under 

the bonnet as it needs to be. 

Cleverly, power is directed 

through a fairly traditional ninespeed 

automatic transmission. 

Such are the number of ratios 

drive is seamless and smooth, 

well the entire driving experience 

is smooth, but the point 

I’m trying to make as well is 

that the C 350 e is little different 

to drive than any of its C-Class 

stablemates. 

The C350 e is stunningly quiet 

and civilised and it has impeccable 

handling manners. Riding 

on high quality 18in Bridgestone 

rubber there is a solid footprint 

on the road surface that translates 

to a very pointy feel at the 

steering wheel. Turn-in is precise 

and any body movement over 

the suspension can be discounted, 

at just 1.4m tall gravitational 

forces aren’t high. 

The evaluation car was 

showing an almost 800km 

distance to empty (petrol) 

when I picked it up. After a long 

highway drive of 450km I took 

it back to the dealership still 

showing 500km to empty. That’s 

just an example of how thrifty 

the C 350 e is on the highway 

and associated commute. 

Both a fast charge cable (type 

2) and a domestic supply cable 

are included, the latter has good 

length at 8m, perfect for my 

unique charging situation at 

home.
