Residents
plead with
council
to fix
flooding
• By Daniel Alvey
AVONDALE RESIDENTS have
pleaded with the city council to
resolve their flooding issues.
After watching the flood waters
rise around her Tenby Place
property again on April 1, Tenby
Action Group co-ordinator Heidi
Oudemans spent
last Wednesday
presenting her
concerns to city
councillors.
A staff report at
the meeting stated
it was “not possible
to ‘fix flooding’
and some level of
Heidi
Oudemans
flood risk would be present even
if investment were significantly
increased”.
“There will always be a bigger
flood event, or areas that cannot
be practicably remedied.”
The report said the community
and council would have to accept
some surface water ponding
and private property flooding
that could be addressed through
physical work.
But Oudemans said there were
days when residents were unable
to leave their properties.
“There is a pregnant lady down
the road who is worried about if
the ambulance can get in, there is
an 81-year-old lady who can’t get
out at all, and I can only get to my
letterbox then I’m blocked in by
water.” •Turn to page 4
KAREN BRILL’S walking bike
has allowed her to get her life
back.
Karen was struggling with
her weight, had damaged lungs,
difficulty breathing and severe
arthritis.
“In 2020, I went to church and
couldn’t even walk five metres
without needing to take a rest. I
disliked not being able to walk
and live a normal life, and finally
decided that I’d had enough.”
So Karen bought a large
walking frame, hoping it would
extend her mobility. Despite
taking this step, she reached
another hurdle.
“The walker was so wide
I couldn’t even get through
doorframes with it. I put up with
it for a few months, but in early
2021 I thought it was ridiculous.
So I went online and stumbled
across the Alinker walking bike.”
Karen said before the Alinker,
any sort of exercise was hard.
“I was 150kg and I couldn’t
even get to the letterbox. My
neighbour brought in my mail
and took out my bins for me, and
friends picked me up to take me
to church.”
The new walking bike, created
by Dutch-Canadian inventor
Barbara Alink, allowed Karen to
out of her home and complete
her daily errands by herself.
The walking bike also helped
her lose enough weight to receive
gastric bypass surgery and
improve her quality of life.
“It came down to the social
aspect of it as well. People were
talking to me in the street and
my confidence was improving.
I’d even leave myself extra time
when I went out, so that I could
stop and chat to anyone who had
questions.
“Now, I’m walking about 6km
a day. While I still cannot bend
my knee, my lungs are healthy,
The city council’s Walking
people like Karen. A new
accessible walk, hosted by the
New Zealand Spinal Trust and
called Te Ara Ihutai Coastal
Pathway – Wheelie Wander will
take place on Sunday, April 23.
The participants will meet at
11am at Scotts Park off Main Rd
in Mt Pleasant before they walk
or wheel their way along the
Coastal Pathway.
The walk is open to those in
wheelchairs and their friends
and whānau. New Zealand
Spinal Trust community and
marketing coordinator Tina
Morrell said the organisation
was exited to host the walk.
“As staff, we like to live active,
healthy lives and encourage the
people we work alongside to
remain active too. The well-being
benefits of keeping physically
active are immense,” Morrell
said.
Whether you’re a fan of local
history, getting out into nature,
socialising or pushing yourself
to get that awesome view, there’s
something for all ages and
Four reasons why
we won't see
property prices
collapse in 2023
Caleb Griffioen
caleb.harcourts.co.nz
As we navigate through 2023, concerns
about the stability of the New Zealand
property market have been swirling.
However, there are several key factors
that indicate a collapse in prices is
unlikely.
1. Population growth
New Zealand is gaining more people.
Stats NZ net migration figures for January
show a net gain of 33,200 people. This is a
massive gain compared to a net loss of
17,500 in January 2022. As the population
grows, the demand for housing will
continue to rise, providing support to the
property market and helping to prevent a
collapse in prices.
2. Construction slowdown
We're seeing fewer homes being built as
developers struggle to obtain finance.
They're shedding staff, on-selling land
and even some are cashing up their
luxury cars. In February, the seasonally
adjusted number of new dwellings
consented fell 9.0 percent.
3. Shrinking Supply: Record-Low Listings
Realestate.co.nz has reported that just over
9,200 new properties were listed for sale last
month, which was the lowest number of
new listings for March since their records
began 16 years ago. Economics 101
suggests that when supply drops, prices
move up.
4. Interest Rate Clarity: Buyers Factoring
in Higher Rates
There is a general feeling that interest rates
are nearing their peak. While homeowners
will be feeling the pinch as they move off
their fixed rates, buyers now know what
they're in for and are factoring this into what
they're paying.
LUCKY ARROW…
Arrow, a 3 year old
Whippet is one lucky
dog. Whilst galavanting
out with his mate on a
Saturday, he dived into a
pile of rubbish and came
out with a huge rod of
bamboo sticking out of
his sternal area.
He was rushed to
McMaster & Heap and
on arrival Arrow seemed
quite bizarrely chilled out,
with no visible blood.
The nurses tried to get
hold of Steve and myself but we were deep into a 56km bike ride
to Godley Heads and back, so we didn’t hear our phones.
Luckily for Arrow, our surgeon Kirsty was in CHCH so she flew to the clinic to
assess the situation and remove the obvious foreign body.
Kirsty quickly assessed the scene in the car, made sure Arrow was stable before
moving him into our treatment area. Kirsty was worried the bamboo had
penetrated Arrows chest cavity, compromising ventilation and cardiac output.
Arrow was immediately placed on intravenous fluids, given pain medications,
blood work and radiographs performed to assess the extent of the damage.
Miraculously the 20cm rod of bamboo had not gone into the chest cavity ( no
pneumothorax), rather it had entered through the ventral chest, headed up
under the arm but not made its exit point.
Arrow was carefully anaesthetised and the bamboo was gently removed in
many sections, as it would have been dangerous to just yank it out. It was
attached to the subcuticular tissues and we didn’t want a massive bleed. The
area was thoroughly flushed and all the small fragments of bamboo removed.
A large grenade drain was placed to safely allow drainage of inflammatory fluid
and blood.
Arrow spent Saturday night at the CHCH Afterhours clinic where his ongoing care
and medications continued throughout the night. He was discharged the next
day and is doing so well.
This case highlights that McMaster & Heap are all about teamwork, great
communication and our patients coming first. Our two Saturday scheduled vets
were fully booked with consultations until 3pm so Arrows surgery would have
been delayed, possibly with consequences.
Dr Kirsty didn’t hesitate to stop what she was doing and race to work to take care
of Arrow.
Steve and I are so proud of our team - they all care so much about their patients
and their colleagues, going that extra mile, which in Arrows case was required.
Ironic really that Arrow had impaled a length of bamboo, in actual fact similar to
an “arrowhead”.
TRAPPED: Heidi Oudeman has put up with flooding outside her home on
Tenby Pl for more than a decade.
PHOTO: NZ HERALD
Some flooding
impossible to fix
•From page 1
For over a decade,
Oudemans has watched
floodwaters rise outside
her Avondale home and
trap her and residents of 40
other homes on her street,
potentially for days on end.
It happens every single
time it rains, and the locals
have had enough.
Oudemans told city
councillors it doesn’t take a
large weather event for the
street to flood, with only
a couple of hours of rain
leading to days of waiting
for the water to drain away.
A resident on Newport
St said the floodwaters can
be “quite confronting” and
was worried about sinkholes
and other hazards.
“We just want to turn our
pond back to pavement,”
the resident said.
Oudemans also expressed
concerns about
long-term damage to
house footings. Mayor Phil
Mauger is no stranger to
working in flooded areas,
having taken matters into
his own hands and digging
out a trench in Bexley red
zone in 2020, following
which the city council
voted to prioritise works
in the area to address the
problem.
Mauger visited the flood
affected area around Tenby
Place and Newport St
during heavy rain. He told
residents he thought the
problem was to do with
a drain outlet at Porritt
Park not draining quickly
enough. He said the city
council will get a report
done and come back to the
residents.
The city council report
tabled at the meeting
said there may never be a
complete fix for some areas
that regularly flood.
The report intended to
present a wider view of
stormwater management
that will enable more
informed decisions to
be made. Mauger also
questioned city council
staff whether enough
material was being
removed from rivers and
whether more common
dredging could be an
option, something he said
was a common occurrence
pre-earthquake.
Council staff responded
by saying dredging is not
a simple process and that
multiple factors had to be
considered including bank
stability.
The city council decided
to develop a prioritised list
of works, but staff warned
the scale of the task limited
the city council’s ability to
address all areas at pace
and significant time would
be needed to complete all
the work.
FED UP: Tenby
Pl and Newport
St residents,
including Heidi
Oudemans
(middle),
presented their
concerns to city
councillors at a
meeting last week.
The footballing
lifestyle – and
a taste for coffee
BIG FUTURE: Zoe McMeeken’s busy off-season will
include a New Zealand under-20 camp, playing for
the Phoenix Academy and possibly finding a cafe job.
Below – McMeeken played for Halswell United before she
debuted for the Wellington Phoenix in 2021.
• By Jaime Cunningham
FOR ZOE McMeeken, football is
a lifestyle. She lives and breathes
the sport everyday and struggles
to name anything she enjoys
more – except maybe coffee.
“I guess a hobby is drinking
coffee? Everyone knows I like it a
lot, I kind of have a caffeine addiction,”
she said.
The 19-year-old former
Halswell United player is
currently taking a two-week
break from football following the
end of the Wellington Phoenix’s
second A-League season, which
finished with a 2-2 draw against
the Melbourne Victory a week
ago. McMeeken was the team’s
youngest squad member in their
inaugural season and started in
all but one of their games. She
was one of 13 players to sign on
for a second season with the club.
It was also the first season
the team could play their home
games at Wellington’s Sky
Stadium after the Covid-19
border restrictions prevented
any games being played outside
Australia last season.
“It was so much better. The
support from all the fans and
our families made such a great
atmosphere,” she said.
Although the Phoenix finished
at the bottom of the table for a
second year, McMeeken said
their draw, two wins and some
close losses over the last month
were promising signs going into
their third season.
“Compared to last year,
everyone in the team felt like we
were more competitive,” she said.
One of McMeeken’s highlights
was last month’s 1-0 win over
A-League leaders, Sydney FC on
March 11 – which also happened
to be her birthday.
“We beat Sydney, who are
one of the league’s top teams (in
Sydney), which was pretty cool.
It was such a good birthday,” she
said.
Over the last six months
McMeeken has been based in
Wellington.
“Moving to Wellington was
a big change, but I’m a lot more
used to it now.
“If my parents had a choice
they’d want me back here a lot
more though.”
The young fullback is staying
with her parents’ in Lincoln for
another week before travelling
to Auckland for an under-20
Football Ferns camp. After that,
it’s back to Wellington to play for
the Phoenix Academy until the
A-League re-starts in October.
Between her football duties,
she’s looking forward to watching
the Football Ferns play at home
in the FIFA Women’s World
Cup, which runs from July 20 to
August 20.
She hopes to play for the
Football Ferns one day. “I know
quite a lot of them playing now,
so I will definitely make my way
to the games,” she said.
Although she hasn’t extended
her contract with the Phoenix for
another year yet, McMeeken is
keen to continue playing in the
A-League.
“I’m planning to stay in the
A-League. I love all the coaches
and players at the Phoenix so
we’ll see.
“I just want to become more
of a consistent starter and make
a team over in Europe one
day,” McMeeken, who named
Barcelona’s Lucy Bronze as her
favourite player.
“The Women’s Super League
is growing so much and to see
(50,000 people) at one of the
games recently was just insane.”
She has come a long way
from playing for Halswell and
Selwyn United boys’ teams in her
younger years, which McMeeken
really enjoyed.
“A lot of my coaches
recommended playing with
boys,” she said.
“I really liked playing with
them because they really cared
for me but I quite enjoyed
tackling them too.”
McMeeken is hoping to be
selected for next year’s FIFA
Under-20 World Cup, although
the tournament venue and dates
are still to be confirmed.
In the meantime, McMeeken
will be searching for a job in
Wellington in the off-season
while she plays for the academy
team and finishes studying a
psychology course this semester.
“This year (the contract) was
enough to fund everything it
needed to,” she said.
And if McMeeken lands the
job she has in mind, it doesn’t
look like her coffee addiction will
be ending anytime soon: “It’ll
probably be something to help
with my social skills, like maybe
a cafe.”
GREAT AUTUMN READS AT TAKENOTE FERRYMEAD
Second Chances
Facing my demons and finding a better me
by Hayley Holt
Hayley Holt grew up in the public eye. Now it’s time to share her side of the story.
After breaking free from the strict dance schedule of her childhood, in her late teens Hayley
found freedom at the bottom of a bottle. Before long it became a crutch. As her high-profile TV
career grew, Hayley spent nights drinking, getting kicked out of clubs, and blacking out. In this
vulnerable memoir, she describes the scare that led her to AA, her journey to sobriety, and an
ADHD diagnosis that brought everything into focus. Then, single, forty, and at the peak of her
career, Hayley embarked on a pregnancy that was cut short by a devastating stillbirth. Yet in the
darkest place of her life, she found hope in a blossoming new love. Heartbreaking and inspiring,
filled with Hayley’s wicked wit, Second Chances is about finding the courage to face up to your
mistakes, and learning that even the deepest pain can be followed by the greatest joy.
The McCartney Legacy
Volume 1: 1969 - 73 by Allan Kozinn, Adrian Sinclair
In this first of a groundbreaking multivolume set, THE MCCARTNEY LEGACY, VOL 1: 1969-
73 captures the life of Paul McCartney in the years immediately following the dissolution
of the Beatles. Beside his extraordinary, creative solo output, he has collaborated with the
most influential artists of his generation and the next: from Elvis Costello to Stevie Wonder,
from Michael Jackson to Dave Grohl, even with Johnny Cash and Kanye West. McCartney,
too, has explored new poetry styles with Allen Ginsburg and teamed up the NYC Ballet to
create Ocean’s Kingdom. And he has done all this post-Beatles and while maintaining a
mostly normal family life. Paul McCartney has lived ten lifetimes in the span of one and
become increasingly more relevant. The McCartney Legacy is the first truly comprehensive
biography, and the most finely detailed exploration of McCartney’s creative life beyond the
Beatles, ever undertaken.
SCHOOL OPEN DAYS
Thriving on the East
Shirley Boys’ High School
Shirley Boys’ High School – Ngā
Tama o Ōruapaeroa is a school of 1250
rangatahi that serves the eastern suburbs
of Christchurch. It has a rich history,
which continues at Ōruapaeroa. We have
a purpose-built school with first-rate
facilities designed to support the learning
of boys. Although our current site is new,
we still focus on the traditions, customs
and values of a school that has proudly
been part of the community since 1957.
Our staff are expert in the learning needs
and strengths of our ākonga. Teachers
deliver high quality teaching and learning
based on the New Zealand curriculum. The
learning is challenging, engaging and fit for
boys. It is directed by the teacher in a calm
and ordered environment. Our kaupapa
is on developing positive and strong
relationships, with a goal of producing
high levels of academic and personal
achievement in academic, sporting,
cultural and service endeavours.
At Shirley Boys’ High School, boys are
encouraged to participate in a vast array
of sporting and cultural activities that are
designed to prepare them for success at
and beyond school. The desired outcome
for our boys is that they enjoy school and
find it a positive and rewarding experience.
We support this with our core values of
Whakaute -Respect, Whānau, Hononga -
Belonging, Tuakiri - Character and Better
than Before. These values contribute to
making our school strong across all areas.
Through living and demonstrating these
values, our boys will continue to learn and
grow, and will be positive role models,
contributing citizens.
Shirley Boys’ High School is committed
to preparing rangatahi to succeed in
their world by providing learning that is
designed to enrich boys and encourage
them to be Better than Before.
Christian Integrated
Schools in Christchurch
Working together for the good
of students and families has been a
successful recipe for Christian Integrated
Schools in Christchurch.
The Christian Education Network
has been in existence for over ten years.
Aidanfield Christian School, Emmanuel
Christian School, Hillview Christian
School, and Middleton Grange School
decided in 2005 that there was much to be
gained by working together cooperatively.
They recognised opportunities to share
successful teaching practice, curriculum
development initiatives across a wide
spectrum of school operations as well as
cooperatively strengthening their special
Christian Character. They recognised that
their ability to serve students and families
was greatly enhanced by working together
in a close and trusting relationship.
The success of the network has seen
other schools wanting to join in. Early
in the piece Rangiora New Life School
became part of the network. The schools
joined together to support the genesis
of Ashburton Christian School and also
culminated in the start up of the brand
new Rolleston Christian School in 2015.
The schools have developed interlocking
enrolment schools which assists in
providing transparent pathways in
Christian education from new entrant
through to Year 13.
A further strength has been a
cooperative engagement with the Ministry
of Education who have been pivotal
in assisting the network’s successful
development.
SCHOOL OPEN DAYS
Preparing students for their future
“Our aim is simple... to provide the best education possible for every student”
Giving students the opportunity to study from
an innovative and broad curriculum is critical
to providing each student a pathway that meets
their individual needs. We allow for a greater
range and flexibility in subject choice including
the utilization of the secondary/tertiary interface.
This reinforces the philosophy underpinning
personalised learning and is strongly supported
by understanding our students’ interests, passions,
talents, and ultimately their career aspirations.
We understand that for effective learning to
take place, it has to be implemented in such a
way that students will be highly engaged. The
school does this in a ‘forward thinking’ way by
creating learning environments that allow our
students to see value in what they do and achieve.
Papanui “PRIDE” is what we represent and we
demonstrate this by having young adults leave
our school as confident learners who have gained
the appropriate qualifications and social skills to
become valued contributing members of society.
All that we do here is reinforced by positive
relationships, an ethos of caring, cultural
responsiveness, inclusion, and high expectations
– what we call “Our Full-Service Model”. The
school highly values the connectedness of
curricular and co-curricular learning. We have
a philosophical understanding that the holistic
development of the student is critical to their
individual success.
The school has worked hard to consolidate
recent initiatives to ensure sustained and
continuous improvement. You are invited to view
our website, school charter, ERO report, and/or
contact the school for more information.
We look forward to welcoming all prospective
students and their families/whānau to visit our
school.
Polyfest 2023 – St Thomas
of Canterbury College
72 of our ākonga, tutored by five St Thomas’
old boys, took the stage to proudly represent our
College at this year’s Polyfest which was held at
Hagley Park on Saturday 18th March. With the
sun gleaming on a beautiful Christchurch day,
over 15,000 people enjoyed 26 Canterbury schools
showcasing the Pasifika culture, while enjoying the
numerous food stalls.
Our group was well supported by our parents,
old boys and staff who witnessed one of the best
performances of the day. The harmonious singing,
partnered with the powerful synchronized actions
on the big stage, was all on the back of the hard
mahi the group have put in.
Well done to everyone involved.
A centre of
creative excellence
When choosing the right school for our tamariki we often go by the
‘feeling’ we have when we visit, as much as by the programmes that
schools have on offer. The world demands fewer people who can do
repetitive tasks and more people who can think creatively and critically.
That’s why our vision, our aspiration, as a school is to be ‘A centre of
creative excellence’ in everything that we do, whether visual arts or
chemistry, volleyball or music, management or curriculum organisation.
In doing this we haven’t forgotten the importance of building
strong relationships with all of our students, and the importance of
individualising learning pathways so that we come as close as we can to
meeting every individual student’s needs. Hornby High School’s feeling
is one of positive relationships that support learning. Students often
comment that we feel like whānau, like family. Visitors without exception
comment on the calm learning focussed environment that they see and
feel when they visit our learning spaces. This all takes place within our
wonderful facilities that are allowing us to develop a new curriculum
crossing old subject boundaries and catering for individual needs, that
support student passions, and help our students to grow their heart for
their community. The growing list of student achievements support
our students’ opinions that we offer a wide range of sporting and other
activities for them during
their time at school. And
we expect nothing but the
best from every student,
we expect every student
to create the best version
of themselves that they
can be. We emphasise
our values, promoting
the ethos of kindness, of
manaaki. We invite you
to come along and meet
with our skilled staff, and
the amazing young people
who make Hornby High
School such a wonderful
place to be. Robin Sutton.
GET IN quick is my advice.
That is if you want a performance
car with a high output
internal combustion engine. The
automotive world is changing
quickly, hybrids, electric vehicles
and models with low emission
engines will soon dominate the
global new car market.
At least for the time being,
Volkswagen is catering for those
who want power and performance
and in a standout package.
Sure, there’s the quintessential
Golf GTi, but Volkswagen
is marketing heavily the R series
of performance models – Golf R,
Tiguan R and T-Roc R (R meaning
Race).
The T-Roc sits in the smaller
side of the sport utility vehicle
range, it’s sort of a crossover really,
but what it lacks in stature it
certainly makes up for in practicality
and honesty, it will easily
cater for the small family and has
already established itself as a success
in the global marketplace.
The T-Roc here is priced from
$43,490, there are four models
(including the R), the latter sits
at $71,990, which if you stack it
beside other performance hatchbacks
and sedans around the
same size it is competitive, but
bear in mind the Government
will also have its hand out for a
$1660 fee to subsidise low emission
vehicles.
True to its R stablemates, the
T-Roc gets a 2-litre turbocharged
engine. I mentioned the Golf
GTi, well, the R series engines
in all three variants get a similar
engine as the GTi but with even
greater power outputs. In R form
the four-cylinder unit has power
outputs of 221kW and 400Nm.
Incorporating
best motorbuys
www.drivesouth.co.nz
T-Roc R adds to VW’s performance line-up
The engine is an absolute belter
with a strong mid-range surge
and dynamics which encourage
vigorous throttle use. That’s
because this engine has sound,
I’m not saying it is noisy, it’s
not, but it does emit shrieks and
howls under urgency that is a joy
to listen to.
Drive is channeled to all four
corners using Volkswagen’s
4-Motion system, the transmission
is a seven-speed direct shift
system which you simply treat
like any automatic. As you would
expect, there are paddle shifters
on the T-Roc, and if you still like
to hang onto a gearshift, manual
changes can also be carried out
at the main shifter itself.
When I refer to the entire
Volkswagen R series models as
being race ready, well, effectively
they are. Sure, you can’t go to a
track and start racing, but you
can have a decent amount of fun
in a closed circuit situation.
Hot hatchback buyers are
spoilt for choice with a plethora
of lively yet functional performance
models scattered freely
across several brands in New
Zealand. Volkswagen has not
made a choice easy, choosing
between any of the three R
variants would simply come
down to the practical aspect of
what each delivers, the T-Roc
also has the benefit of a sizeable
load area.
However, it’s what’s at the
other end that makes the R
models so special, let’s hope that
Volkswagen (and other car makers)
can continue building their
performance engines for many
years to come. I know that’s a
difficult ask when the world is
demanding lower emissions to
combat climate change, but I’m
forever the optimist.
