Community food pantry
broken into five times
PHOTOS: DANIEL ALVEY
SMASHED: Volunteers Loretta Te Paa and Carmen Smith assess the damage after another break-in at The Pantry on Piko Cres in Riccarton.
• By Daniel Alvey
FRUSTRATED is one word to
describe how the volunteers at a
community pantry feel after five
break-ins in three weeks.
The Pantry is a free
community food distribution
initiative open two days a week
outside the Plunket building on
Piko Cres in Riccarton to help
people in need.
Co-ordinator Loretta Te Paa
said it has been difficult to keep
repairing the damage each time.
“I am frustrated. I don’t know
what else to do,” she said.
“It is just disheartening, we
are trying to feed people and
this happens to us all the time.”
She ruled out the rising cost
of food as a motive for the
break-ins. The pantry, which
has been operating since 2018,
was based at the Riccarton West
Community Garden on Peverel
St, 200m from its current
location.
The Pantry serves
40-50 people a week on
average while open on
Tuesday and Thursday from
11am-noon.
Te Paa said the break-ins
won’t stop them operating
the service. “Not on my shift.
My husband and I have decided
no one is going to get the better
of us. We’re not giving up yet.”
To break-in they ripped down
part of a wall which had just
been built.
“They smashed the new
pailings and ripped them off the
wall.”
They then smashed their
way into the storage room and
ransacked the ice cream and
drinks. When Te Paa arrived
to clean up she found they had
also smashed a table, snapping
its metal legs.
“It’s just a mess there’s
melted ice cream, rubbish, and
smashed bits everywhere,” Te
Paa said.
Te Paa has thought about
installing CCTV but is worried
the cameras would be targeted
too.
“I reckon they’ll just smash
them off.”
Te Paa filed an online report
with police but is yet to hear
back.
So fast to everywhere...
the park, the village, the community, the city
45-minute
workshops
sharing tips
and style tricks
on fashion
The Hub Hornby is again hosting a workshop series
focused on real fashion. This year it’s all about
wardrobe sustainability, trying to make the most
of what you have and how fewer items can create
lots of interest in your wardrobe. Reworking what
you have is a great way to save money, reinvent
items you may have overlooked and styling them in
a way that makes your wardrobe feel fresh and up
to date.
Vicki McMillan from Beauty & Style hosts these
workshops and takes you through different ideas
you can explore and get into the detail of style, such
as textures, shapes, colour and what makes your
personal style. You will be able to look at what your
style is - what different styles can be explored and
how to reinvent your wardrobe, reflecting where you
are at right now! It’s not all about restocking your
wardrobe with everything new but looking at what
you already have, and how items can be coordinated
and combined together, creating new looks with a
couple of well considered new purchases. Let’s all
shop smarter, so when you open your wardrobe, you
can never again say, ‘I have nothing to wear!’
Vicki will be running five different workshops
throughout the year - 45-minute sessions covering
a variety of clothing, beauty, makeup, lifestyle tips
and how to make you feel comfortable and stylish
while still feeling like yourself. The sessions will
cover capsule wardrobes, curvy (dressing beyond
a size 14), menopause, plus one on one single
store-style sessions.
All of the main sessions are free to attend,
however, if you want to come along as a style
VIP, you receive an exclusive ‘goodie-bag’ with
extra styling information to help you at home and
goodies!
As well as our Free workshops, Vicki will offer
individual Shopping experiences working with you
one-on-one. These are at the discounted price
of $100 and include fantastic discounts from
participating retailers giving you the opportunity to
redeem your booking fee back!
Remember fashion should be fun. Creating
wardrobe choices to represent your style and
lifestyle is key to a wearable collection. Whether
you need staple investment pieces to last a few
seasons or pops of fashion items to update your
current wardrobe, these sessions are designed
to get you inspired about your wardrobe again.
RANGI RURU Girls’ School
have come away with a
respectable fifth place to finish as
the top South Island school at the
New Zealand secondary schools’
water polo championships.
Rangi Ruru, alongside St
Margaret’s College, St Bede’s
College and Christchurch
Boys’ High, represented the
South Island at the division 1
tournament, held at Jellie Park
and Tairoa: QEII last week.
After a tough loss against
Diocesan’s second team
(Auckland), Rangi went on to
win four games to finish fifth in
a tournament often dominated
by North Island schools.
Rangi were challenged with
many tight games – a different
story from their dominance at
the South Island champs two
weeks ago, which they won
convincingly.
With eventual winners St
Cuthbert’s (Auckland) and
bronze medallists Baradene
College (Auckland) in pool B
FOCUS: South Island champions St Bede’s College finished
10th after a 7-6 loss against Christchurch Boys’ High
School.
with Rangi, the team did well
not to lose by more than six goals
in any of the games.
St Margaret’s struggled in
the competitive pool A, and
suffered heavy deficits in the
pool play.
However, the team found some
form in the latter matches of the
tournament, narrowly losing
8-6 to Diocesan A in the plate
semi-final before finishing with a
5-5 draw against Westlake Girls’
High (Auckland).
In the boys’ competition,
neither St Bede’s nor
Christchurch Boys’ made the
championship quarter finals
after close losses in pool play.
St Bede’s narrowly missed out
on qualifying from pool C with
their win, loss and draw against
Western Springs, Rangitoto
(Auckland) and Hamilton Boys’
High respectively.
Similarly, Christchurch Boys’
finished third in pool D after
only managing one win, against
Kings College (Auckland).
Both St Bede’s and
Christchurch Boys’ went on
to win their three games that
followed pool play, and met in
the plate final on Sunday.
Although St Bede’s went
into the match as South Island
champions, Christchurch Boys’
found the net more in the ninthplace
playoff, winning the
game 7-6.
College to win the plate final.
ANZAC DAY
TUESDAY APRIL 25, 2023
Remembering our Anzacs
“The darkness, calm and chill of the early morning; the sound of
the single tap of the drum of the parade; the emotionless faces
of the catafalque guard, and the mournful notes of Last Post
sounded by a lone bugler, combine to give a feeling of deep
solemnity. It is the intensity of the symbolism which contributes
to its powerful impact upon participants; indeed what underlies its
popularity. In a country with few public rituals, the Dawn Service
continues to provide a sense of occasion as a meaningful ritual of
remembrance.”
rsa.org.nz
Every year Anzac Day is observed on April 25 by communities
throughout New Zealand and Australia to remember those who have
served and those who lost their lives in war. The term ANZAC is the
acronym for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, and was first
used in World War 1. These groups of soldiers back then were known
as ‘the Anzacs’.
Anzac commemorations may consist of one or more ceremonies –
one at dawn (timed to coincide with the initial landings at Gallipoli
by Australian troops who were the first ashore) and/or one later
in the morning. The ceremonies are rich in tradition and generally
begin with a parade of returned servicemen and military personnel
followed by cadets, youth groups and local dignitaries. War veterans,
proudly sporting their medals lead the parade, which leads to a local
cenotaph or memorial gate where the ceremony includes a service
with hymns, laying of wreaths, dedications, prayers and the Last Post
played on a bugle. Morning tea follows and allows people to share
memories and catch up with friends and neighbours.
Anzac Day was first observed by servicemen in 1916 to mark the
anniversary of New Zealand and Australian soldiers landing on the
Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915. It soon became a day where all New
Zealanders and Australians took time to remember the men and
women who perished in the Great War. In 1921, Anzac Day became
an official holiday and by 1922 it was declared a full public holiday
where shops, banks and hotels remained closed for the day.
Symbol of remembrance
The red (or Flanders) poppy is a symbol of remembrance and hope
all over the world and, in some countries, is worn on Armistice
Day, however in New Zealand the red poppy is commonly worn
on Anzac Day. The first Poppy Day appeal was on April 24 in 1922,
where funds from the sales of small and large silk poppies helped
relieve suffering in war-ravaged northern France. A paper version
of the poppy is now sold by the Royal New Zealand Returned
Services Association on Poppy Day to raise awareness for Anzac
Day and funds for returned soldiers and their families and local
communities.
‘They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.’
Energy and fibre dense, and able to store for long periods of time, these humble
biscuits helped give the New Zealand and Australian soldiers the energy they
off and delivered to their men on the front line.
Preheat oven to 180°C/355 Fahrenheit. Line a large
baking/oven tray with baking paper. If you don’t have
a large tray, use 2 medium sized trays and bake the
biscuits in two batches.
Place golden syrup, butter or coconut oil and brown
sugar in a medium saucepan and melt over a low heat,
mixing well.
Mix baking soda with boiling water to dissolve, then
add to melted butter mixture in the pot, along with
the rolled oats, coconut and flour. Stir all ingredients
together until well combined. If the mixture looks too
wet, add a tiny bit more flour. Leave mixture until cool
enough to handle and firm enough to roll into balls. You
can speed this up by placing the mixture in the fridge
for 5 minutes.
Roll heaped tablespoons of mixture into balls and
arrange on prepared baking tray (leaving them at least
3cm apart to allow them to spread during baking).
Flatten slightly with the back of a fork. Bake for 15-18
minutes or until light golden brown.
Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before storing
in an airtight container. They will crisp up as they cool.
Christchurch’s housing and business development rules are changing
Ōtautahi Christchurch’s population is growing. Over the next 30 years, it’s predicted we’ll need more than 40,000
new houses to ensure everyone has a place to live, and Christchurch City Council is planning for that now.
Our growth challenge
We need to provide for the growth of housing and
business in the best locations in Christchurch, to
help address issues like climate change and housing
shortage. This means more houses where there’s good
access to shops, services, work, school, public transport
networks and infrastructure.
Where there’s good reason, we also need to ensure
development remains restricted or limited to protect
and maintain areas of value.
These changes won’t happen overnight. Over time the
look and feel of the city will change, and we want to plan
for that and keep what people value.
A new direction in urban planning
The planning rules have changed for New Zealand’s main urban areas. We need to
follow the new national direction to allow greater housing and business development
within Christchurch’s existing urban footprint.
There are new national standards for multi-unit housing developments called the
Medium-Density Residential Standards (MDRS). These aim to make it easier for denser
housing developments to happen. Once they come into effect, up to three dwellings
of up to three storeys can be developed on a property in Christchurch without needing
to apply for a resource consent, as long as all other rules have been met.
Not all parts of Christchurch are suitable for the MDRS, so we’re proposing special
rules, called Qualifying Matters, apply to recognise heritage and cultural features, to
protect major utility, infrastructure, and people in areas vulnerable to natural hazards,
among other things.
What we’re proposing
We’re proposing important changes to the city’s planning rulebook, the District Plan, via two plan changes – the Housing and Business Choice
Plan Change (Plan Change 14), and the Heritage Plan Change (Plan Change 13). Both plan changes were formally notified on 17 March 2023.
Replacing some existing residential zones in
the city with two new ones – a Medium-Density
Residential Zone and a High-Density Residential
Zone. The Medium-Density zone is the baseline for
increasing housing in our city. The High-Density
zone would allow apartment buildings and multistorey
flats in the central city.
Increased height limits for residential and
commercial buildings in and around the
central city, suburban centres and along public
transport routes, as well as enabling residential
development in some industrial areas around the
central city and larger suburban centres.
Special rules (Qualifying Matters) to limit greater
development of housing and business under
the MDRS, in order to better reflect our city’s
environment and climate. One proposes changing
recession planes to increase sunlight access from
what would be possible under the MDRS. This
applies citywide and means the MDRS won’t come
into effect for Christchurch until 2024, when Plan
Change 14 is decided on.
Heritage that should be protected, with a number
of new buildings, items and interiors added to
the Schedule of Significant Historic Heritage.
Have your say on our growing city
You can make a submission on the Housing and Business Choice Plan Change (Plan Change 14) and Heritage Plan
Change (Plan Change 13) until 3 May 2023. Detailed information about the plan changes and everything you
need to make your submission is available at ccc.govt.nz/growingcity

HOME & HEATING
Get the balance
right this winter
Enviro Master has been helping Cantabrians
get the balance right when it comes to
choosing the perfect heat pump or air
conditioning system for their home or office
since 2002.
Their team of expert sales people, qualified
electricians, heating and refrigeration
engineers, help to supply and install
Christchurch’s widest range of heat pumps,
and because they have no affiliation with any
one brand, you can be assured their advice
on the benefits and differences between each
product is unbiased.
They will recommend the most energyefficient
and cost-effective system for your
individual situation, and will have you
regulating the heat in your home or office in
no time.
Nowadays, customers are often wanting
whole home solutions to be able to maintain
even temperatures throughout the home both
in Winter and Summer. This can be achieved
by using ducted systems or multi systems
and Enviro Master are experts in designing,
installing and commissioning these systems.
Help is currently available with a
government subsidy covering 80 per cent of
the cost of a new heat pump up to $3000.
The subsidy is part of the Warmer Kiwi
Homes initiative and is available to Home
owner/occupiers with a Community Services
Card, a SuperGold combo card or who live in
a low-income area as determined by deciles
8-10 on the New Zealand Deprivation Index.
The applicant’s home must also have been
built before 2008, have insulation up to code
(insulation subsidies also available) and have
no fixed heating in a living area, such as an
existing operational heat pump or fireplace.
With new regulations now in place for
Landlords to provide heating in rentals, it’s
time to ensure you are meeting the new
standards.
Inadequate heating and ventilation can
lead to mould growth and dampness in your
property, leading to costlier maintenance
and an unhealthy living environment.
Providing a fixed heater with a higher heat
output and lower running costs, like a heat
pump, will enable your tenants to heat the
area effectively. Enviro Master are well
experienced with the Tenancy Services
software to ensure that you are meeting your
requirements.
To ensure you choose the right system
for your home or business, one of Enviro
Master’s experts will visit to assess your
individual situation, offer advice and
answer any questions you may have. This
consultation is at no cost to the customer
and is always provided before a heat pump is
installed.
Anyone wondering about their eligibility
for a subsidised heat pump are welcome to
get in touch for details and help with the
application process. To find out more, call
Enviro Master on (03) 366 0525 or visit
their website www.enviromaster.co.nz
Keep cosy with
RD Petroleum
this winter
RD Petroleum (RDP) is a familiar sight
for farm and rural residents around the
Canterbury region, however now days urban
residents also enjoy the same excellent
customer service for which RDP is known for
in rural communities, through their home
heating diesel.
RDP began its home heating diesel delivery
service to the lower South Island’s main urban
centres of Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin
and Invercargill a number of years ago.
Customer demand has continued to increase
year upon year, and RDP has responded
with specialised improvements to its delivery
equipment.
The trucks that deliver RDP’s home heating
diesel in each urban centre are drawn from
the company’s extensive vehicle fleet. This
means they have the latest communication
and GPS tracking technology on board, so
the operations team always know where they
are and how far away they are from their next
delivery stop.
RDP’s home heating diesel trucks come
equipped with a specially-designed hose,
through which the diesel is pumped from
the truck into house tanks. The length of
the hose allows the trucks to access tanks
without having to enter the property, avoiding
damaging the driveway. RDP is the place to
go if you require diesel conveniently delivered
to your home and as a loyal RDP customer
you’re offered discounted pricing and can
become eligible for value-added benefits.
For all enquiries please phone
Tiguan R offers speed, poise and balance
VOLKSWAGEN’S R series
of performance models has
received a significant boost with
three new variants joining the
line-up.
I’ve recently evaluated T-Roc
R and Golf R, they have been
joined by Tiguan R – a mid-size
sport utility vehicle.
The Tiguan R is rated at
235kW and 400Nm, it gets all
the trick gear that makes the R
(Race) series so desirable – fourwheel-drive,
adaptive dampers
and torque vectoring control.
Race mode is activated by a
steering wheel-mounted button;
once pushed, the entire
driveline goes into a manic state,
it is excitable and eager to blast
through any given highway. It
also imparts angry sound, the
engine and exhaust spit and bark
in unison, it’s infectious and
could be a trap because, like its
stablemates, the R series is biased
toward exhilaration on any given
journey, a constant watch on the
speedometer is recommended.
In terms of power outputs,
take note of where the specific
points of delivery are – 5600 to
6500rpm and 2000 to 5600rpm
for torque, that is a constant supply
of energy which means you
don’t have to hammer the engine
hard to make it work freely, the
flow of power is constant and
forceful at any given point. Drive
is through a direct shift gearbox.
Effectively it is a manual, but
there are only two pedals in the
car – brake and accelerator. Gear
changes are automated unless
the driver takes control through
a sequential shifting system from
the main gearshift lever itself or
through paddles.
Incorporating
best motorbuys
www.drivesouth.co.nz
Against the clock the Tiguan
R will scorch to 100km/h in
5.2sec and will make a highway
overtake (80-120km/h) in 4sec.
These are fast times and ones
that are very rewarding when
circumstances allow.
It’s on the open road that the
Tiguan R really struts its stuff,
powering out of a corner doesn’t
force any wayward cornering
motion, of course there are
those electronic and mechanical
systems working to correct any
physical force off-line; however,
the Tiguan R doesn’t rely on
these devices as it has poise and
grip provided by clever suspension
elements and, of course, the
transfer of power to each corner.
The test car was riding on
19in wheels fitted with Hankook
low profile tyres which, along
with the 4Motion driveline, vast
amounts of grip can barely be
tested. It must be said as well the
Tiguan R doesn’t handle like a
traditional SUV, it has poise and
balance which is quite unusual
for a vehicle well over 1.6m tall.
The Tiguan R also satisfies as
an all-round family wagon, it has
speed which stuns the senses, but
it also is a complete package in
terms of practicality. Those on
board are treated to a decent ride
and plenty of space; that’s the
ethos of SUVs and the Tiguan R
is no exception.
What the Tiguan R represents
well is the word sport in sport
utility vehicle, it’s a sensational
package and one that gives you
a relatively good bang for your
buck. At $80,990 ($85,990 high
grade) it’s not too wayward in
terms of pricing. However, you
can guarantee the Government
will come knocking for a few
extra dollars as part of its Clean
Car Programme fee.
