School
responds
to alleged
video of
teacher in
sex act
• By Tony Simons
A CHRISTCHURCH high school
is continuing to investigate the
circumstances surrounding a
video that appears to show a male
teacher in a sexually explicit act,
and has requested anyone who
has the video to stop sharing it
and delete it immediately.
In an email to parents, the
school principal said the board of
trustees had been informed of the
matter and confirmed it related to
a member of staff.
A parent, who said they have
seen the video, said parents and
students at the school have been
discussing who they believe is
involved, including a student. The
parent said the video has been
circulating for some time.
The principal said: “We know
there is some discussion in parts
of the community about the sharing
of a video . . . we can confirm
that at this early stage we are seeking
to understand the facts and
next steps.”
The school principal and board
chair met for much of yesterday,
then made a short statement
reiterating what was sent to
parents earlier.
RESIDENTS LIVING close to
land used for storing shipping
containers want the city council
to hurry up and do something
about them.
One has taken to emailing
Mayor Phil Mauger for help -
but she has had no response.
“I do think he has let the
community down,” said Melissa
McCutchan.
“We just don’t seem to be getting
anywhere . . . our concerns
are not being taken seriously.”
The containers are being
stored on industrial land in
Woolston, close to residents’,
including McCutchan’s, homes.
She said her house shakes and
reverberates when containers
are moved. It is not uncommon
for she and her children to be
woken in the night when containers
fall. She likens the sound
to an earthquake.
“If it’s not waking me up, it’s
waking up my children,” she
said.
“It’s taking a significant toll
on everything.”
Residents complained about
the site last year and in November
the city council determined
the operator had been stacking
containers higher than the 11
metres allowed, and was also
using a designated landscaping
and stormwater setback.
The operator applied for
resource consent in November
to be allowed to stack containers
higher than 11m.
Motorist allegedly ran down dog walker
• By Daniel Alvey
AN IRATE motorist is targeting
people walking their dogs – and
now it is alleged he used his car
to knock one of them over.
A person and their dog were
allegedly run down by a car after
the driver abused them and
made death threats.
Police have now released
CCTV footage in a bid to identify
the driver.
The incident happened late
afternoon on April 14. It may
not be the first incident where
people walking their dogs have
been abused by the motorist in a
dark grey sedan.
INFORMATION SOUGHT:
Police want to identify
the driver of this dark grey
sedan in connection with
an incident with a dog
walker.
The April 14 drama unfolded
when a person walking their
dog was verbally abused by the
Fresh face for clock tower
Darren
Moses
driver of the sedan on Springs
Rd near Southfield Dr in
Lincoln. The driver also allegedly
threatened to kill the dog
walker.
“He yelled that I abused my
dog,” the dog walker said. “He
also yelled out that he was about
to kill me several times and
he was going to grab my dog
off me.” The dog walker was
“chased” by the motorist into
Southfield Dr and then into
nearby Blunden Rd.
“He then ran his car at us
twice onto people’s front properties,
he succeeded the third
time hitting both my dog and
myself knocking us both over,”
years to come.”
Problematic areas of water ingress
have had protective membranes
applied, giving protection
from the elements.
The work has been labourintensive
and presented a number
of challenges due to the small
footprint, height of the structure
and age of some materials.
“With six levels up, it’s quite a
compact environment with up
to 10 people on site, so it’s been
a matter of co-ordinating the
spaces and the workflow,” said
Moses.
“Introducing modern materials
to extend the life of the structure
whilst maintaining the overall
aesthetic and integrity of the
original is another challenge and
the result is a credit to the whole
team who’ve worked on it.”
I think he stopped was that
people (were there) in the park.”
The person and the dog were
not badly hurt.
Senior Sergeant Rachel
Walker said more CCTV
footage has now been provided
by the public. “Police are
reviewing the information
received following the appeal
. . . and are following lines of
inquiry to identify the vehicle.
Walker said.
The school said not all the
information being shared this
week about the video is correct or
has been validated.
It is understood the school has
yet to launch an employment
investigation, because it was still
trying to understand the facts.
The parent said some students
believed the video could have
been doctored.
The school said, due to privacy
constraints and the need to work
through a robust process, the
it was unable to provide more
information. But the school
assured parents it was taking the
matter seriously.
It is seeking advice from the
Two-way street
stays for $1.2m
A PANEL OF city councillors
has recommended a central
Christchurch street remains twoway
– but it will cost an extra $1.2
million to go ahead with.
Developers Philip Carter and
Shaun Stockman last month
threatened to delay projects and
stop investing in the city if a block
of Lichfield St was to become oneway
with a 10km/h speed limit.
In response, city council staff
developed a new design that keeps
the street running in both directions,
but still sees it made safer
and with more space allocated for
people and outdoor dining.
On Monday, city council staff
revealed the new two-way design
would cost $1.2m more than the
original one-way plan. Later in
the day, a hearings panel consisting
of five councillors decided
to recommend the new two-way
option.
Banks Peninsula
MP Tracey
McLellan.
McMahon
has also emailed
Mauger and city
council chief executive Dawn
Baxendale.
Mauger was hailed a people’s
hero before he was elected
as mayor, when he used his
contracting company to dig a
trench in Bexley to stop flooding
which was upsetting people in
that area.
McCutchan was disappointed
he had not responded to the plea
for help.
Mauger didn’t respond to
questions put to him by The Star.
A spokesperson for the mayor
said it was a matter for city
council staff to deal with.
While the resource consent
is being considered, the city
council temporarily allowed
containers to be stacked six high,
meaning the stack could be
about 17m.
“This was not a decision that
was made lightly by council staff
given the concerns being raised,”
the spokesperson said.
“An abatement notice was
issued for the activity. Most
aspects of the non-compliance
were addressed by the operator.
However, some aspects were
deferred to await completion
of processing of the resource
consent.”
The six-high container stacks,
obstruct residents’ views of the
Port Hills.
“We had such a beautiful view
of the area, and it’s just been
diminished,” McCutchan said.
The city council spokesperson
said the reason for allowing
the containers to be stacked six
high was due to a difference
in interpretation – whether a
container meets the definition of
a building, and is subject to the
height limit.
The property owner’s lawyer
also said regardless it would
lodge a resource consent for
stacks up to six containers high,
the spokesperson said.
“Council staff considered it
reasonable to allow those issues
to be thoroughly and properly
considered through the resource
consent process.”
McCutchan wants to see the
district plan enforced for safety,
noise, and the view from her
home.
McMahon wants the original
plan enforced.
“It really is not fair,” he said.
“It’s affecting people’s quiet
enjoyment of their own homes.”
With the increased height of
the stacks, McMahon said views
of the Port Hills are considerably
more obstructed.
“I was used to seeing this
beautiful view of the hills,” he
said.
While exercising discretion
is standard council practice,
McMahon wants to see
discretion in favour of the
community, instead of the
operator.
“I understand the council
must adhere to the law and
it’s very difficult when dealing
with wealthy developers, but
Woolston only has the council to
stand up for us,” he said.
“It is very complex and very
unfair that people’s right to the
quiet enjoyment of their homes
is being denied to them.”
McLellan thinks it would be
better if the city council focused
on enforcing the District
Plan.
“I’ve had a lot of feedback from
residents who are disappointed
and frustrated about this
development,” she said.
“They’re concerned about
the noise, the safety of stacked
containers, the loss of visual
amenity, and the impact of
industrial activity on the
sensitive ecological river
corridor.”
Update on Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor
released; Kerrs Reach changes proposed
THE NEXT swathe of
regeneration projects for the
Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor
are taking shape.
Preliminary designs and
information for the City to Sea
Pathway, proposed developments
at Kerrs Reach, and an estuarine
wetland at Bexley was published
yesterday.
City council
head of parks
Andrew Rutledge
said the new
information provides
more clarity
Andrew
Rutledge
and detail for a
prioritised group
of projects.
“We have done
a lot of work behind the scenes,
and it’s exciting to be able to
share more information about
these key projects with the community,”
said Rutledge.
“We’re preparing to progress
work on the City to Sea Pathway
and the Bexley wetland, and to
apply for a plan-change process
to make some significant
changes to Kerrs Reach.”
Details around one of the
centre-pieces of the OARC, the
City to Sea Pathway, are firming
up. The 11km-long shared-use,
all-weather route will largely
follow the course of the Ōtākaro
Avon River from Barbadoes St
in the central city to Pages Rd in
New Brighton.
“Due to the length of the
pathway, it will be designed and
constructed in three sections,”
said Rutledge.
“At an average of four metres
wide, it’s designed to be enjoyed
by everyone, and a surrounding
network of minor paths will
connect (it) to the surrounding
communities.
“This pathway is one of the
centrepieces of the OARC Regeneration
Plan, and we’re moving
closer to putting spades in the
ground. We anticipate construction
on the pathway will begin
next summer.”
As part of the City to Sea Pathway,
a new footbridge will be
constructed at Dallington, after
collaborating with students from
Canterbury University. This
work, and the development of
the upper terrace at Avon Park,
is funded by the Christchurch
Earthquake Appeal Trust.
existing Kerrs Reach flatwater
sports’ clubs facilities to the opposite
side of the river, are also
progressing, with artist renders
and preliminary plans published
yesterday. This proposal will trigger
a Christchurch District Plan
change process the city council
will apply for.
Rutledge said the proposed
Kerrs Reach developments will
be a significant project for the
OARC.
“By relocating the existing
flatwater sports buildings and
facilities across the river, we
can repurpose the current car
park, bridge, lighting and underground
services at Kerrs Reach
for a new Wainoni riverside
landing.”
Rutledge said the new landing
could include a pavilion that
can be booked for community
events, a seasonal kiosk, outdoor
spaces for markets and
gathering, an events space, riverviewing
platforms, boardwalks
and cultural design elements.
The creation of an estuarine
wetland at Bexley, complete with
improved stopbanks and stormwater
treatment capabilities will
be planned in conjunction with a
project to upgrade the Pages Rd
bridge.
New stopbanks will be constructed
further away from the
river’s edge, then the current
stopbanks removed to let the
land flood naturally and create a
new wetland.
New features planned for this
where the land is higher and has
less salt in the groundwater.
Emily Blythe, CEO and
Founder of aviation
company Pyper Vision
“Christchurch: Aerospace
Capital of New Zealand”
is a reality on the horizon
At 26 years old, Emily Blythe has been named 2023 Spark
New Zealand Innovator of the year for her work creating
safe visibility at airports by dispersing fog using a specially
designed, environmentally friendly drone. Emily, CEO and
founder of Christchurch company Pyper Vision, originally
pitched the idea as a 16-year-old high school student and has
aviation in her blood. Her mum is an air traffic controller and
her dad and grandad are both pilots who often got delayed due
to fog issues, so naturally she started thinking about solutions.
Fog delays and diversions are large costs for exporters, airlines
and airports — Pyper Vision estimated that fog disruptions cost NZ$18.5
billion a year globally. And diverted flights produce significantly more
carbon emissions.
Emily and Pyper Vision’s success is just one example of the city’s
booming aerospace and aviation community that offers an abundance
of opportunity. The scale of growth is huge and incorporates not
just aviation and the obvious space flight and rocketry, but also
manufacturing, engineering, geospatial mapping, data analytics,
education, training and services.
Why Aerospace in Christchurch?
Canterbury is an ideal location for aerospace and aviation. It has a
generous expanse of skies, clear airways, remote seas to the south and
all with easy access to international sea and airports. And the Kaitorete
Spit is technically the best site in Aotearoa for aerospace and space
launch activity. The geographic advantage is backed by the city’s strong
innovation ecosystem and advanced manufacturing sector, both of which
help make Christchurch home to global leading companies working to
minimise environmental impact.
Pyper Vision themselves grew within the ecosystem, launching as a
startup through Te Ōhaka’s innovation programme. Study pathways
add strength to the sector with the University of Canterbury offering
Aotearoa’s first aerospace minor as part of an engineering qualification.
This is boosted by the strong network of aerospace companies nurtured
by industry body Aerospace New Zealand. It is on a mission to create an
aerospace business hub in Canterbury that exceeds $50+ million annual
revenue by 2030 and already has 200+ Christchurch–based members
including businesses and supporters.
The economic impact is significant:
Around the world innovation hubs associated with aerospace
generate an economic ecosystem around themselves
By 2050 the global value is estimated to be $2.7 trillion
In Canterbury, the economic impact is estimated to be
between $100 million and $1 billion already
Aerospace New Zealand
A not-for-profit industry body that promotes the interests of
our city, our region, and our nation. Their mission is to grow
a thriving Aotearoa New Zealand aerospace ecosystem that
is highly regarded around the world. An inclusive and
sustainable aerospace industry that aligns with Aotearoa
New Zealand’s values in enabling environmental and social
outcomes that improve the wellbeing of all New Zealanders.
that aims to increase launch capacity and space accessibility
in a sustainable way.
World leaders in end-to-end liquid hydrogen systems that are
currently being used to decarbonise the aviation, heav transport,
and mining. They are building systems for ground-based
infrastructure and on-board fuel tanks for zero emission flights.
Fabrum are partners with AIRBUS, AirNZ New Zealand, and
SPS Automation
A Christchurch-based R&D company specialising in tailored
airborne and ground-based automated robotic systems. Their core
technology is sensor-based artificial intelligence and the design/
integration of the robots that use it. SPS Automation has in-house
rapid prototyping facilities. If it flies, rolls or moves and needs to
Skybase
Since 2017, Skybase has driven local industry growth in uncrewed
aviation technology. With world-first regulatory approvals, they
have upgraded an existing aerial firefighting aeroplane to fly as
an autonomous drone with no pilot on board. This enables flight
at times and in places that would otherwise not be possible.
Orbica
Orbica’s Geospatial Platform has been designed to make data
Vivid memories of Parker – Hulme
• By Tony Simons
THE DEATH of 84-year-old
Anne Perry, who was convicted
in 1954 of one of Canterbury’s
most notorious murders,
has brought back some vivid
childhood memories for
Christchurch man, David
Bolam-Smith.
Juliet Hulme, as she was
known then, and her best friend
Pauline Parker
murdered
Parker’s
mother
Honora
Parker at
Victoria
Park on the
Cashmere
David
Bolam-Smith
Hills.
The 45-yearold
died after
being hit
about 20 times with a brick.
Bolam-Smith’s father worked
at Ilam Homestead, where the
Hulme family lived, and he knew
the two teenage girls.
Thomas Bolam-Smith (known
as Bolam because there were two
Toms in the family) was the fulltime
gardener at the homestead
at the time Hulme (aged 15), and
her best friend Pauline Parker
(aged 16) were plotting the
murder.
“I was just 9-years-old at the
PAST: Anne Perry, formerly known as Juliet Hulme, died in the United States
aged 84 on April 10. She was a teenager when convicted of helping to murder her
friend’s mother on the Port Hills.
time,” said Bolam-Smith. “But I
still remember us sitting around
the dinner table at our house in
Burnside Rd (Memorial Ave)
discussing my father’s gardening
work for the Hulme family.”
After the murder and when the
girls were charged, Bolam-Smith
remembers the talk around
the table and the shock of it all
happening.
“My parents didn’t say much
after that, perhaps because they
didn’t want to upset us,” said
Bolam-Smith.
But perhaps they remained
quiet because the Hulme family
circumstances were scandalous
for the time.
“I actually think my parents
talked about the murder and
the trial privately out of our ear
shot,” said Bolam-Smith.
After the trial, it is
believed Hulme’s father,
Dr Henry Hulme, 46, was
forced to resign his post as
rector of Canterbury University
College, not just because of the
trial, but also because of the
scandal of the affair his wife
was believed to be having with
Walter (Bill) Perry, who also
lived in the homestead at the
time.
Testimony at the murder trial
stated Perry’s relationship with
Hilda Hulme was known to her
husband and even accepted by
him.
After Juliette Hulme
was released from prison, she
moved overseas, changed her
name to Anne Perry and later
became a crime writer. The two
girls also became the subject
of the 1994 Peter Jackson film,
Heavenly Creatures, starring
Kate Winslet and Melanie
Lynskey.
At the time of the murder,
Bolam-Smith and his family
lived in a house on Burnside Rd.
It was an unsealed road leading
to the airport and the nearby
Ilam Homestead, owned by
Canterbury University College
(Canterbury University), was a
semi-rural property on the very
outskirts of the city.
The Hulme family lived there
and it was used by the college for
entertaining. It was described as
beautiful and renowned, with
an idyllic, spectacular garden
setting.
In evidence during the trial,
Juliette’s mother, Hilda described
the place as big and oldfashioned
with grounds planted
in shrubs.
She told the court she knew
from Juliette’s diary that the two
girls had a secret place in the
garden they called the temple,
but they kept it to themselves,
and she had no idea of its
significance.
“I don’t think my father knew
anything about that,” said
Bolam-Smith.
“At least he never mentioned
it to us.”
Bolam-Smith’s father died
in 2011 after a long career as
an award-winning gardener
and garden designer, and
after working for a number
of companies, including
Associated British Cables, and at
the Cracroft Estate.
His wife, Bolam-Smith’s
mother, Dora is now 106 and
still remembers the turbulent
time.
“I was talking to her on Friday
about Perry’s death (on April 10)
and she remembers it clearly,”
said Bolam-Smith.
They have both seen the film
Heavenly Creatures.
“It was a bit weird trying to
connect it to my memories of
the time,” said Bolam-Smith.
“My memory and the film’s
interpretation don’t exactly
match, but my mother said she
thinks it will be a lasting record
of what actually happened.”
The clearest memory Bolam-
Smith has of the time was
being told by his father they hit
Pauline’s mother with a rock.
“I remember wondering what
would happen to them and
where would they go? From a
child’s point of view, that was an
awful thing to do.
“The fact that two girls could
have done that to the mother,”
he said.
Netball icon’s dream home sells for $4.65m
• By Diana Clement
CANTERBURY netball legend
Joan Harnett-Kindley has sold
her Wānaka dream home for
$4.65 million.
The four-bedroom
designer property was
snapped up at auction
last week by a local
family.
The waterfront
house was built by
Harnett-Kindley, a
former Silver Ferns
captain, nearly 15
years ago.
Harnett-Kindley
played 116 internationals in the
1960s and 70s, including three
world championships.
After retiring from netball,
Joan
Harnett-
Kindley
she built up a real estate business
in Christchurch, and
later became a director of her
husband’s real estate company
in Wānaka.
Ray White Wānaka agent
Anna Findlay said the buyers
were the only active bidders
at the auction.
“They walked into the
house and loved the whole
feel of it,” she said, adding
that Harnett-Kindley
was very happy with the
outcome of the auction. The
Albert Town home sold for
$400,000 above RV.
The property looks out
onto the river, has views of Mt
Gold and Mt Maude and comes
with a full-size tennis court.
Designed by architect Ken
Warburton, the house was built
in schist stone to ensure it was
in keeping with the environment.
“It just belongs here,”
Harnett-Kindley said.
The netball icon, who recently
celebrated her 80th birthday,
said she and her husband Don
had sold Wicklow Tce because
the property had become
too big for their current lifestyle.
They planned to build a
townhouse elsewhere in Albert
Town.
“We’re on half an acre of
land. As one gets older it’s a
lot of work. We’ve got to move
while we can still enjoy the new
(home),” she said.
Drowned teacher’s grieving
parents speak of ‘joyous’ son
• By Georgina Campbell
THE GRIEVING parents of
Christchurch primary school
teacher Isaac Levings say
he became separated from
his friends after a concert
in Wellington, got lost, and
accidentally drowned in the
harbour.
His parents Charles and
Margaret said the pain of their
youngest son’s death will remain
with them for years to come.
“It’s a hell of a shock. We’re
coming to terms with the fact we
won’t have Isaac, but it doesn’t
make it any better,” Charles Levings
said.
The 25-year-old’s body was
found by police in the harbour
on Friday.
Isaac Levings grew up in
Avonhead as a contented child
who developed a mischievous
sense of humour as he got older
and kept everyone on their toes,
Margaret Levings said.
“We just had joy for 25 years.”
Margaret had worked parttime
at Russley School and
Charles had worked at Avonhead
School after spending 34 years as
a principal at various schools.
But Charles said it was a
surprise to both of them when
Isaac decided in his final year of
high school that he wanted to be
a teacher.
He went on to study at Canterbury
University and got his first
job at Elmwood Normal School,
where he has worked for the last
five years and was adored by his
pupils.
Isaac had a lot of fun at school,
was allowed to be himself, and
could try different strategies to
work with the children, Margaret
said.
Floral tributes and other trinkets,
including a new basketball
with “you were the most wonderful
teacher, we will all miss you”
written on it, piled up outside
Isaac’s classroom door following
his death.
Isaac was particularly keen
on basketball and has been
described by one parent as an
incredible sportsman who often
went along to watch his pupils’
games at the weekend.
“As parents, it’s so heartening
to think that he was so much valued
and so much loved because
he had the same love for the
kids,” Charles said.
The tributes were removed on
Tuesday afternoon and given
to Isaac’s family so the children
could start fresh yesterday.
Charles said some of the pupils
were traumatised by the loss of
their teacher and will be receiving
professional support.
Isaac’s family have collectively
shared the painful grief of losing
him, but Margaret said she has
found strength in family and her
faith.
She said the Wellington police
were amazing and she was grateful
Isaac’s body was discovered
soon after he was reported missing.
Isaac was staying with friends
in Wellington when he disappeared.
He was last seen at Queens
Wharf after attending the concert
by band The 1975 at TSB
Arena on Wednesday night last
week. He became separated from
his friends after the concert,
became disorientated, and his
phone had gone flat.
The alarm was raised when he
didn’t return to where he was
staying.
A friend contacted Isaac’s older
brother James the next day and
James then got in touch with his
parents.
“That was so much out of character
for Isaac. Isaac’s really well
organised,” Charles said.
James then flew to Wellington
with a cousin to talk to police.
They and other family members
flooded the police station,
Charles said.
Police put out a public appeal
for information about Isaac’s
whereabouts and started searching
the harbour on Friday, where
his body was found later that day.
Charles it was an accidental
drowning.
In 2021, the body of 30-yearold
Sandy Calkin was also found
in the water near Queens Wharf.
Calkin’s father Roger has
advocated for balustrades to be
installed along the most dangerous
parts of the wharf area.
Charles agreed with him.
“If it was a swimming pool or
a construction site, you would
have health and safety people
coming around throwing fines at
you because it is potentially quite
dangerous.”
Wellington City Council has
confirmed it is investigating
enhanced edge definition and
further fencing to deter people
from accessing the wharf edge.
Isaac’s body was flown from
Wellington back to Christchurch
on Tuesday.
“We’re delighted to have Isaac
back with us in Christchurch.
It’s going to help with our grief
process,” Charles said.
Son threatens to
kill dad; drug bust
reveals cannabis
growing operation
PHOTO:
GETTY
• By Emily Moorhouse
A MAN who threatened to kill
his father before shooting up his
house truck and taking to it with
an axe said he was emotional at
the time.
Kyle Stephen Ord, 37, appeared
in the district court where he
was sentenced on a lengthy list of
drugs and firearms charges after
a drug bust revealed his cannabis
growing operation.
The summary of facts said a
breakdown in the relationship
between Ord and his father
began when they agreed to swap
vehicles. However, Ord decided
he should be paid a further
$2000, which his father didn’t
agree with.
Between October 2 and 10 last
year, Ord sent multiple texts to
his father saying he was going
to kill or assault him and his
father’s partner. He referred to
guns in his possession when
making these threats.
On October 3 last year, using a
shotgun, Ord fired several shots
into the outside of his father’s
Bedford house truck, which was
parked at his address.
He then damaged the interior
of the truck using an axe.
When police searched Ord’s
house they found cannabis plant
branches hanging from the ceiling
drying out as well as recently
harvested cannabis, utensils for
cutting it up, and a set of scales.
In total, including stalks, 1423
grams of dried cannabis were
found as well as 85 cannabis
seeds stored in various tins.
In Ord’s bedroom, a loaded,
modified 22 calibre Norinco
rifle and a Sako 26-06 rifle were
found in the wardrobe. Ammunition
was also found.
A search of Ord’s workshop
revealed a fake wall with a
small entrance door. Behind the
wall were two growing rooms
equipped with lights, fans, ducting,
water pumps, air filters, timers,
and transformers for power.
The walls and ceiling were
covered in white plastic sheeting
with timelines and diagrams
with dates written with a black
marker pen, outlining the plants’
harvesting dates.
There were 57 cannabis plants,
ranging in size.
A stolen 2022 Honda motorcycle
valued at $10,795 was also
found in a garage near the house.
In Ord’s vehicle, police found
two bags of methamphetamine
and 110g of cannabis stored in
resealable bags.
When questioned by police,
Ord said he used the guns for
shooting possums and for his
protection. After shooting up
his father’s house truck he broke
the shotgun up and stored it in
a box.
Ord said he shot up the house
truck because he was in a bad
head space and emotional at the
time.
He admitted being angry with
his father when he threatened
to kill him and his partner but
said he wouldn’t have followed
through with this.
Ord’s lawyer, Joshua Macleod,
said his client was thankful
for his time spent in custody
because he had been given the
opportunity to focus on himself.
Macleod said Ord had taken
full responsibility for his actions
and was an intelligent man who
had previously built businesses
before he became involved in
drugs, causing his downfall.
He said Ord accepted the end
sentence would be one of imprisonment
but despite that was
still focusing on being a better
man and keeping himself out of
trouble.
Judge Dominic Dravitzki said
Ord’s offending was very serious,
noting the fully loaded gun in
his bedroom with which he had
threatened his father and his
father’s partner.
Judge Dravitzki gave Ord
discounts for his guilty pleas, his
“difficult family background”
and the steps he’d taken to address
addiction issues while in
custody.
He sentenced Ord to two years
and five months imprisonment
and ordered the destruction of
all the drugs and firearms.
STYLE &
DESIGN IDEAS
FOR YOUR BRAND NEW APARTMENT
At Kevin Hickman Village we have brand new,
architecturally-designed apartments available that
are leading the way in how we Cantabrians live.
Although you might be downsizing, these
affordable apartments give you the chance to
showcase your personality & style. Senior Ryman
interior designer, Alex Armitstead, has come up
with seven clever ideas for apartment living.
A ROOM WITH A VIEW
The views from many Kevin Hickman apartments are
stunning, overlooking to the Riccarton Park Racecourse
and out to the Port Hills. Stylise & enhance your apartment
with a mirror that reflects and increases the light inside.
ESSENTIAL ORGANISATION
Bookcases let you add your own personal
touch with colour, and can be flexible
furniture pieces too. You can add rolling
drawers with covers for the storage of
linens, seasonal clothes & shoes. Add
storage for remotes, photos and more by
fitting your bookcases with baskets and tins.
UP HIGH
Instead of using low, solid and heavy
furniture in your apartment, bring in
sleek, tall pieces with high legs. Longer
legs on furniture helps accentuate the
floor space in your apartment.
SMART ART
Turn your television into art.
A smart TV (one that will
stream the internet) can be
used to display art for free using YouTube. Let your
imagination run wild - holiday images, pictures of family
& friends or get creative with colours and shapes.
CREATE DIVISIONS
Often dividing your apartment into
zones helps with organisation but
without the need for physical walls.
A see-through bookshelf, a screen
divider or even positioning furniture
a certain way are easy ways to
provide that break between areas.
SLEEP
IN STYLE
Replace your bed base for
your apartment with one
that comes with handy
drawers for storage. This one
(pictured) from Sleepyhead
saves you storing items
underneath your bed
collecting dust. Pair it with a
matching headboard.
MULTI-PURPOSE
FURNITURE
Make the most out of
design pieces in your
apartment by turning them
into functional storage.
When it’s time to put your
feet up and watch TV, add
a stylish Ottoman foot
stool where you can stash
your throws or blankets.
Landmine expert inspires rest home
residents to get knitting for Ukraine
• By Daniel Alvey
UKRAINE MAY be 17,000km
from Christchurch, but rest
home residents are doing their
bit to help the war-torn country.
Russley Village residents have
knitted woollen goods to send
to Ukraine, including blankets,
hats and scarves, as well as
donated brand-new jackets
and jerseys.
The residents were inspired
to get crafting by former soldier
Tony Connell, who returned to
Christchurch this week and will
help deliver the much-needed
goods.
Connell has been living in
Ukraine since 2014, and
since 2016 has been helping
remove landmines,
as well as educating
locals on what to do if
they find one.
He is based in
Chernihiv, a
town about
140km north
of the capital
Kiev.
Back in
Tony
Connell
with his
mother
Moyra at
Russley
Village, with
knitted
goods for
Ukraine.
Christchurch for a holiday, he
gave a talk to rest home residents
where his mother Moyra lives.
Connell is the Ukraine
country director for the Swiss
Foundation for Mine Action, a
non-governmental organisation
which clears mines and
unexploded munitions around
the world.
While Connell has done the
actual removal in the past, he
now works in administration,
overseeing fundraising and
financing and liaising with other
agencies in the area.
For the first time in 22 years,
Connell attended the Christchurch
Anzac Day dawn service.
He was in the New Zealand
army for 24 years, finishing up in
1999 at Burnham.
Connell said he was surprised
by the cost of living in New
Zealand.
“I was shocked when I paid $6
for a coffee, in Ukraine $1 would
be an expensive coffee,” Connell
said.
“Some of the supermarkets in
Kiev are better stocked than the
ones here in New Zealand.”
Connell believed the Ukranians
would never give up, no
matter how hard the Russians
pushed. He said the Russians
targeted anything that produced
energy to make it harder for the
Ukrainians in winter.
“I think Putin made a mistake
doing that because it just made
them (Ukrainians) fight harder.”
Rising food prices: Readers share tips
My solution to rising fresh
food prices: I joined the St
Aidan’s Vege Co-Op (Bryndwr),
which has been a huge help to
having affordable fresh food.
For $18 dollars I receive a bag
containing a variety of fresh fruit
and veges every week, and very
good value for money.
They have enough volunteers
doing all the work and welcome
new people as it gives them
greater buying power.
Also, there are often items –
usually bread – donated from
the local supermarket, offered as
extras.
When I need other items than
the ones in the bag, I go to a
fruit and vege market, which is
usually much cheaper than the
supermarket, and also keeps
small local business alive rather
than feeding multinational
companies.
-D Downward
Bryndwr
What disturbed me was the
fact that teachers were not letting
children eat their lunches
from home if they did not have
healthy approved food in them.
Do we now have food police? To
me it is child abuse.
Instead of punishing the child,
help the mother. I am sure she is
not the only parent struggling, so
do as other schools and provide
lunches. Find out where the
nearest vege co-op is and direct
the parents toward this. There
are other ways to help until these
difficult times are over.
-Jean V. Smith
Parklands
For the last 13 years, I have
been saying we all need to grow
our own vegetables.
The easiest way is with a garden
bed.
Last year we made over 350 of
them.
-Selwyn Eagle
Just Dirt Trust
There is only one solution to
this problem and it’s called ‘boycott’
or ‘consumer’ power.
There is no genuine reason
why we should have to accept
these outrageous prices. As a lot
of us can’t afford to buy, there
is no harm done if everyone
chooses not to purchase until the
prices are lowered.
Choose one vegetable or
product per week, and let our
democracy speak.
Things have changed since
Gerry Brownlee’s day, the impacts
of climate change, water
deterioration, child poverty,
inequality and other challenges
are biting.
The Greens have been campaigning
on these issues for
years, now the traditional parties
are at least paying lip service to
the reality. TOP will support
change and with a strong party
Judy Bailey’s Bold Move: Shattering Ageing Stereotypes ADVERTISEMENT
KORU NUTRITION
As she enters her seventh
decade, journalist and former
news presenter Judy Bailey has
become aware that society’s
attitudes towards older people
need, in her words, ‘a rev up.’
“Once you pass 65, people
tend to think it’s a downhill
slide to the Zimmer frame. But
that’s far from the truth.”
“Many of us remain
physically
active,
paddleboarding, cycling, and
even tramping well into our
70s.”
With population of older
adults expected to double
over the next 20 years, Judy
is teaming up with Koru
Nutrition to change the way
New Zealander’s view and
experience ageing.
With a focus on holistic
wellness and a commitment
to excellence, Koru Nutrition
aims to empower individuals
to take charge of their health
as they age.
The New Zealand-owned
company specialises in natural
health products, including
Koru FX and Koru Joint.
As part of the project, Judy
will be interviewing health
experts and uncovering
practical steps that help us age
well.
“I’ll collaborate with
health professionals such as
nutritionists, physiotherapists,
dietitians,
doctors,
psychologists, and osteopaths
alongside the Koru Nutrition
team to bring the latest
research to the forefront the
conversation around ageing
well.”
On why she chose to work
with Koru Nutrition, Judy had
this to say:
“I love Koru Nutrition
because it’s family-owned
New Zealand company whose
ethos aligns with my own.”
“They make quality products
with the best ingredients and
promote a holistic approach
to ageing. I believe that if you
can age naturally, that’s all for
the better.”
“I live an active lifestyle,
and as I get older, I would
hate to have walks with the
dog curtailed or not be able to
lift the grandchildren onto the
flying fox.”
Judy Bailey is all set to
uncover the most up to date
truths on what will help us
age well from some of the
Battle of the universities
among big club clashes
• By Jaime Cunningham
UNIVERSITY OF Canterbury
will mark a historic milestone
when they host Lincoln
University at Ilam Fields on
Saturday.
Although the clash between
the two teams is always a special
affair, UC will want to celebrate
its 150th year with a third
consecutive win on the metro
premier side’s home ground.
Lincoln University co-coach
Simon Livingstone is expecting
a large crowd for the historic
match-up.
“It’ll be great to be a part of the
game. The two universities have
always had a bit of history,” he
said.
Lincoln University go into the
match after beating Belfast 50-17
in round 2.
“The focus was purely down
to execution for us and looking
after the ball for majority
of the game, which we did,”
Livingstone said.
After a narrow 27-26 loss
to New Brighton in round
1, Livingstone said playing
consistent rugby was the key to
their win over Belfast.
“It was a good learning curve,
but we don’t win the competition
in the first game of the year.”
Several Crusaders are expected
to return to their metro club
teams again this week.
Noah Hotham (HSOB),
Melani Nanai (HSOB), Zach
Gallagher (Burnside), Jamie
Hannah (Lincoln University)
and Corey Kellow (Lincoln
University) all played for their
clubs last weekend and may do
so again on Saturday.
“Across the board last week
and this week there’s a lot of
them available,” Livingstone
said.
“It’s a week-by-week basis, with
us finding out on Tuesday or
Thursday if we’ll have the guys
playing on the weekend.”
In other matches, Sumner face
Belfast after beating title-holders
Sydenham at the weekend 34-28.
High-flying Marist Albion play
High School Old Boys in round
3 following two large wins over
Sydenham and Burnside.
Struggling Christchurch take
on Burnside at Christchurch
Park on Saturday, with Burnside
looking to back-up their round 1
win against HSOB.
Sydenham are yet to get their
first win. They take on Shirley
at Burwood Park. Shirley have
started the season with wins over
Belfast and Christchurch.
New Brighton and Linwood
both have a win and a loss
apiece. They play each other at
Linfield Park, with Linwood
set to wear a special Anzac Day
jersey for the match.
NETBALL
Kereru’s B team recorded
a large upset in the opening
round of the premier netball
competition, dominating last
year’s finalists. It was a close
game for the first 45 minutes
between UC A and Kereru B.
Although UC were just three
goals behind at the third quarter
break, Kereru B closed out
the game with a strong last 15
minutes, winning 58-45.
Head coach Wilson Rota was
thrilled with the result, although
just two players from last year’s
squad have returned to the side
and their build up has not been
“the greatest.”
“The girls rallied together
really well. Our defensive
structures, which we had been
working on, and the team’s
communication was fantastic,”
he said.
It was a full-court performance
for Kereru B, with the team’s
shooting at 85 per cent, the most
accurate team in the first round.
to pull away from the Eagles
on the points table when they
host Eastern on Saturday. The
32-4 victory over the Northern
FOOTBALL
Southern League leader
Christchurch United need to step
up a notch on Saturday if they’re
Kobori step closer to turning pro
TALENT: Kazuma Kobori scored 69,69,70,69 to win the Q
school final at Moonah Links in Melbourne last week.
• By Neville Idour
AMATEUR KAZUMA Kobori
stunned a strong field
at Moonah Links
in Melbourne,
winning the Q
school final in a
play-off.
The 21-year-old
Russley golfer
now has a best
category card for
the Australasian
Tour 2023/2024
season after
his 69,69,70,69
win over
Queenslander
Chris Crabtree
in the final
last week.
Playing
together in
the final round,
Crabtree had a
one shot lead. He and
Kobori went toe-for-toe
until Crabtree took a handy
two-shot lead with three holes
to play. But there was a two-shot
swing on the 16th when Crabtree
bogeyed and Kobori birdied. They
both finished par, birdie and -11.
They headed back to the 18th
hole for the play-off and Kobori,
the Australian Amateur champion,
again birdied the par 5 to
take the win.
As Kobori is an amateur, the
$10,000 winner’s cheque went to
Crabtree.
But there are some big opportunities
ahead for Kobori who is
due to head to the United States
in June to compete in the major
amateur events there. He is then
set to represent New Zealand
at the Eisenhower Trophy in
mid-October before returning
to Australia for the Asia Pacific
Amateur Championships at Royal
Melbourne. A win would open
the door to a start at both The
Masters and The Open, which
Kobori would find hard to pass
up if he turns professional after
these events. Following in the
footsteps of his older sister,
Momoka, Kobori feels he will be
ready for the professional ranks
when the time comes. It was an
outstanding week for the Kiwi
contingent at Moonah Links
which finished on Friday. Sung
Jin Yeo finished third, Kit Bittle
fourth, Rhys Thomas sixth and
Tyler Wood was 27th.
at the South Island Age Group
Outstanding 14-year-old
Cooper Moore (Clearwater) was
in scintillating form, beating a
strong under-16 field with rounds
of 70,68,69 to finish -9 at the
tournament last week. Moore began
the final round at the Ashburton
Golf Club four shots behind Ryan
Xie (Remuera) who played in the
NZ Open.
Xie lost the plot in the final round
and Moore ended five shots ahead
of him. Jonathan Fry (Russley)
finished fifth and Yuhan Shao
(Russley) was sixth.
Sora Kishida (Rangiora)
emulated Moore with an excellent
performance in the under-16 girls
with consistent rounds of 70,68,73
giving her a five shot win. Kishida
started the final round with an
eight shot lead. Aroha Minhinnick
(Waimairi Beach) finished fifth.
In the under-19 girls, Yuki Miya
(Russley) was very consistent with
ADD SOME
COLOUR
TO YOUR ADVERT!
Struggling to get on the property ladder
and feeling fed up? You’re not alone. Real
Estate Authority (REA) research has found
that more than half of all first home buyers
– even the ones who successfully buy a
property – find the process stressful and
overwhelming.
1. SORT OUT YOUR FINANCES
You’ll already know that saving is a big
part of getting ready to buy, but do you
know what else you need to do?
Getting financial advice from a qualified
advisor could be a useful step in your
planning.
“It’s also a good idea to get conditional
pre-approved finance arranged so you can
move quickly when you spot a property you
really like. Having conditional pre-approval
lets you know the price range you can buy
in and it shows agents and sellers that you’re
a serious buyer. It’s also crucial if you’re
planning to bid on a property at auction.”
Don’t forget to explore ways that
you might be able to get help from the
Government. There are various forms of
assistance available if you’re a KiwiSaver
member, buying in certain areas, want
to buy a former Housing New Zealand
property or are Māori and want to live on
your ancestral land.
2. NEEDS VS WANTS
Many first home buyers discover a big
gap between what they’d like to buy and
what they can afford when they first start
looking.
“Sit down and write a tight list of what
your absolute must-haves are, then work
out what you’re willing to compromise on,”
throughout Lampen-Smith Christchurch
says.
Advertorial
Tips for first home buyers
about how these will change your needs.
Will you need to be near to childcare or
schools? Will you need a fenced property?
3. DO YOUR HOMEWORK
Don’t let your desperation to find
somewhere blind you to a property’s faults.
“Do as much research as you can about
a property. That means getting a lawyer
on board to make sure all the paperwork
is in order and to help you understand if
there are any issues. We also recommend
getting a qualified building inspector who
has professional indemnity insurance to
prepare a comprehensive report on the
property.”
4. RECOGNISE YOUR LIMITS
Buying a ‘doer-upper’ is a Kiwi tradition,
especially for first-home buyers, but we’re
not all blessed with the right skills. Factor
this in before you make an offer on a
‘renovator’s dream’.
“Be honest with yourselves about how
much DIY you can really do, especially
if you’ve got pets and kids. Getting
professionals in to help will cost more, but it
will also make the process faster. It may also
be better in the long term when it comes to
selling the property if any work has been
done properly with the right consents.”
Christchurch’s best read and largest circulating newspaper
One teacher
per 20-25
pupils, say
retired staff
• By Adam Burns
SOME PARENTS and former
teachers in Christchurch
are skeptical on proposed
changes to class size ratios in
schools, and believe challenges
facing the sector are not
straightforward.
Education Minister
Jan Tinetti announced
changes last week
to help “improve
teacher and learning
outcomes”, reducing
classroom ratios from
one teacher per 29
pupils, to 28 by 2025.
Tinetti said reducing the
number of students in the
classroom would allow teachers
more one-on-one time with
their students.
Thirteen-year-old Amelia
Jan Tinetti
Preston is a year 9 student and
said she was in a classroom
where three teachers looked
after 80 pupils.
She said there was no time
for one-on-one with teachers.
“It was actually really big and
noisy and the teachers couldn’t
really handle the kids.”
Lexi Watson, 13, said the
classes were “a lot of people
for a teacher”.
“You couldn’t really
have much time with the
teacher.”
Mother Kate Grater
said there was not just one
solution to make learning
easier.
“I’m a parent and I wan the
best education for my son and
it’s hard.
“It’d be grea to send our
give them the best education
bu that’s not realistic for a lot
of us.
“And it’s also not realistic to
after you’ve worked a full day,
to sit down with your child,
who is tired and review all of
this (school work).”
Grandmother Linda Askew
though the changes were
futile.
She said a back-to-basics approach
was needed.
“Making sure that our
children can actually read and
write and that we pick up these
little ones who can’t, when
they’re six or seven, not eight,
would be much better.
“Getting one more teacher
ratio is not going to make
much difference at all, and
A Murchison mother, who
preferred to remain anonymous,
said her child was in a
small class at a rural school, but
some pupils still needed extra
support.
“In general, the teaching is
fairly good because of (the size
of the class).
“Part of the problem with big
classrooms is that all kids, no
matter what level they’re at in
the same age group, are put in
together.”
She doubted one less pupil
in the classroom would make a
difference.
“If there’s a lot of different
demographics and higher
needs in that class, they probably
need a couple of teachers
not going to happen.”
Father Michael Pacey
thought classroom sizes had
gotten smaller, bu teachers
had been provided additional
duties.
“I think the teachers do a lot
more than jus teach now,” he
said.
“Giving them the ability to
do the work tha they need to
do in the background, to be
able to teach effectively is a
good thing.
“There’s limited hours in the
day so with the extra responsibilities
there needs to be some
slack given somewhere else.”
RNZ spoke to retired
teachers last week, who said
children to a private school and
where are we going to find
these teachers?”
in each class . that would be
great.
“But in the real world that’s
the government needed to do
better, proposing a ratio of one
teacher per 20-25 pupils.
