Paddle to the metal
on the lake – and surf

DYLAN MONK only took up
flatwater kayaking to keep fit
for surf life saving.
But the 16-year-old is now
one of New Zealand’s most
promising sprint kayakers with
15 national, Oceania and Asia
Pacific titles 11 months after
taking up the sport.
“I only really started
kayaking over the winter to
improve my fitness and my
paddling for surf ski,” the
Shirley Boys’ High student said.
“I got into it through surf
life saving, which I’ve done for
seven years.”
The South Brighton surf life
saver won the under-17 surf ski
event at the Canterbury surf
life saving championships in
February – while training for
sprint kayak events.
Monk, who represents Arawa
Canoe Club, had 20 podium
finishes across under-16 and
under-18 events at the New
Zealand and Oceania canoe
sprint championships and Asia
Pacific Sprint Cup on Lake
Karapiro two weeks ago.

Architectural festival focuses on
opening doors to Greater Brighton
OPEN Christchurch, the
annual festival of architectural
excellence, is on this weekend,
with a celebration of the city’s
architecture and a special focus
on buildings in Greater Brighton.
The festival, presented by Te
Pūtahi Centre for Architecture
and City Making, takes a closer
look at the city’s coastal identity
through its architecture. Among
the 50 buildings to feature in the
programme are New Brighton
Surf Life Saving Club, South
Brighton Surf Life Saving Club,
He Puna Taimoana and St
Faith’s Church.
This selection prompts
attendees to consider the
different approaches –
historical and contemporary
– to the demands of the seaside
environment, in terms of design
and materials.
Each building has a
unique story to tell. St Faith’s
encapsulates the growth of
the area as its congregation
numbers swelled, leading
to the construction of the
current church, while He Puna
Taimoana is a key post-quake
catalyst building set to rejuvenate
the area and connect it to both
the coastal margin and the city
around it.
There are also activities
running at each site that allow
attendees to delve deeper into
the spaces they are visiting. Free
architectural tours are available
at the surf clubs and the hot
pools, in addition to team tours
at the latter.
In an effort to open the city to
more people during the festival,
Te Pūtahi has worked with
partners in the disability sector
and appointed an accessibility
advisor. The 2023 programme
features activities such as a
guided walk through three New
Brighton buildings, as well as
improved accessibility information
for all 50 buildings.
Festival organisers invite one
and all to come out and celebrate
Greater Brighton’s architecture
and the role these buildings play
in the culture and life of the area.
Apart from a handful of
limited entry buildings and
guided walks (which are $5
plus booking fees), Open
Christchurch is free. The
programme includes more than
30 activities – talks, tours and
exhibitions.

City walking tracks
added to app
A WEBSITE and app for walkers
to easily plan short and longdistance
trips has added city
council-managed tracks to its
database.
The parks and spatial teams
worked with the New Zealand
Mountain Safety Council to add
the tracks to planmywalk.nz
The MSC website and app
contains essential track information
such as length, terrain,
location and difficulty; suggested
gear lists; relevant track alerts;
weather forecasts and reviews
and advice from previous track
users.
City council head of regional
parks Kay Holder said it was a
valuable project to be part of.
“The more that councils and
other track and land managers
get involved, the more comprehensive
and accurate the walking
database becomes for New Zealanders
and tourists alike.
“We’ll continue to assist by
keeping MSC informed of new
tracks, track maintenance and
closures on the council’s track
network,” she said.
People can use it to plan their
walk, including what gear and
food to take and can share the
trip plan with others for safety
purposes.
The app is believed to be the
first of its kind, said MSC chief
executive Mike Daisley.

track alerts, gear lists, and then
being able to put all that into a
plan and share it with a trusted
contact – that’s a first. Plan My
Walk enables users to be more

more able to proactively
plan and manage their personal
safety,” he says.
The app is funded, owned and
run by MSC, which spent more
than 1000 hours on research and
development and launched it in
2021.
MSC recently gained funding
from Herenga ā Nuku, the
Outdoor Access Commission, to
complete further development
work over the next two years.

Young kayaker sets
sights on Olympics

“It was such a good experience.
Hopefully I can just continue
with it,” the Shirley Boys’ High
student said.
The four-day event saw Monk
represent Arawa and New
Zealand against competitors
from New Zealand, Singapore,
Japan and Australia. Alongside
eight national titles, Monk
also won the 16-and-under K1
(single) 500m, K1 200m and K4
(four-person) 200m races at the
Oceania championships, and
the K1 500m and K4 200m for
New Zealand in the Asia Pacific
Sprint Cup.
Although Monk always
believed some of his team boats
would do well, he was surprised
by some of his personal results.
“In some of the individual
ones, like the 500m, and especially
the (individual) 200m race,
I didn’t expect to win,” he said.
Monk also won a national title
with his younger brother Lewis,
14, in the 16-and-under K2
(double) 500m race. “It was really
good – and obviously winning
was a bonus as well,” he said.
With the kayaking race season
over until December, Monk will
continue to train six days a week
in a bid to represent New Zealand
again in the summer.
“I’d like to qualify for the next
Asia Pacific championships, and
maybe the junior world champs
the year after,” he said.
Monk has taken a similar
path to five-time Olympic gold
medallist Lisa Carrington,
who also took
up to kayaking
as a surf life
saver. The idea
of representing
New Zealand at
the Olympics is
in Monk’s sights

and see where it takes me.”

to strike on
the world stage

BREANNA Sampson has become
the first bowler from Canterbury to
be selected for a New Zealand tenpin
bowling squad since Dan Ellis went to
the world champs in 2018.
Sampson, 19, (right) has been on the
radar of Tenpin Bowling NZ since last
year when she was selected to travel to a
training squad camp in Manakau. Since
then the Linwood resident has continued
to fine-tune her game.
She will join her New Zealand team
on May 18 for the Sydney Youth Champs
before heading to Bangkok for the Asian
Youth Championships from July 4-12.
“When (TBNZ chief executive)
Stephen Penney phoned I was nervous
but that turned to shock when I found
out I had been selected,’ Sampson said.
“I was super happy and felt like I
wanted to cry, happy tears of course.
“To follow in the footsteps of
some former team-mates of mine in
Christchurch and, of course, my coach
here is a huge honour.”
Sampson is aware of what lies ahead
for her.
“I know that I must work hard
and bowl the best I can now as I am
representing New Zealand. I see this as a
potential stepping-stone towards making
a full adult New Zealand team once I age
out of the youth ranks (at 21).”
Having coach Claire Gow with her in
Sydney certainly eases Sampson’s nerves.
“I have the confidence to turn to her if
something isn’t quite right because she
has been my coach for several years.”
It helps that some of her team-mates
are what she calls “lifelong friends” from
bowling tournaments she has competed
at around the country.

New Brighton Masterplan Update
City Councillor Celeste Donovan has
received a lot of feedback for council
to support the redevelopment of the
shopping mall as part of the New
Brighton Masterplan.
“I’ve asked council to bring forward
$300k of funding as part of this year’s
Annual Plan to get started on designs
to upgrade the pedestrian and public
spaces, linking with the $2.3 million
‘Village Green’ Greater New Brighton
proposal. The ‘Village Green’ concept
will turn 1000m₂ of vacant land behind
Marine Parade’s Pier side building into
a place where people can gather, with
a stage for music, a stall for events and
other activities including the market.
It aims to draw beach and hot pools
visitors into the commercial hub area.
Working with private landlords
and retailers is a key step towards
establishing this redeveloped space
as an activity centre for the eastern
suburbs.” Councillor Donovan says.
Donovan states that the current
vacant and derelict land contributing to
negative perceptions and holding back
development in the New Brighton Mall
has prompted her to ask Council to
consider extending a new rating scheme
to the New Brighton pedestrian mall.
This rating scheme currently trialled
in the central city, charges higher rates
on landowners within the retail space
making no attempt to develop, improve
or maintain vacant and derelict sites.
Another Coastal priority is getting
progress on the replacement of Pages
Road Bridge, Southshore and South
New Brighton Estuary Edge, as well as
long overdue repairs to roads, footpaths,
and basic infrastructure.
Councillor Donovan says the
completion of other stormwater and
flood protection works, including
the Waitaki stormwater basin and
flood management area beside Anzac
Drive and Pages Road, will also be an
important step forward.
She says: “Although the submission
period has now closed for the Annual
Plan, it’s really important that people
continue to make contact with
me or Coastal Community Board
representatives to have their say on the
issues that matter to them”.
