Have you heard of the poetry cave of Puglia? Located just a 30 minute drive from the beautiful Baroque city of Lecce, Grotta della Poesia is a unique natural pool that National Geographic declared one of the world’s most beautiful natural pools. Fed by seawater, there are actually two natural cave pools of varying sizes that have the most extraordinary sparkling azure water, and where the views across the coastline are heart-stirringly beautiful. Both pools are part of the protected archeological site of Roca Vecchia, home to a large set of Mycenaean pottery, and a 16th century watchtower. As you’d expect, the larger pool is a more popular spot. Legend has it that the cave got its poetic name as a beautiful princess would swim here, and writers would come and compose poems dedicated to her. While this is only a folktale, there are ancient engravings on the walls dedicated to a deity, Thaotor Audirahas, who was said to heal diseases. Posìa also means freshwater spring in Greek. You can reach the cave by sea on a guided kayak or canoe tour, or by land. Be sure to don a comfortable pair of shoes, as it’s a rocky path from the car park to reach the grotto, and bring sun lotion, a sun hat, and drinking water, as there’s not a lot of shade in the archaeological park. With its surrounding limestone cliffs, locals enjoy heartpumping cliff diving here, so if you do choose to take a dip in the water, be sure to keep your wits about you. There’s a small entrance fee that’s in place to limit visitors. We recommend you try to arrive early in the morning or at sunset to avoid both the crowds and the heat, ideally in the quieter months of June and September. If you’re looking for a more tranquil swim, consider exploring the sea caves around the nearby medieval town of Otranto, which you can also swim through.
