From scroung<strong>in</strong>g for paper<br />

to exhibit<strong>in</strong>g worldwide: The<br />

artistic journey of Leeah Joo<br />

“Psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan observed that this<br />

myth revealed how animals are attracted to superficial<br />

appearances, but humans are enticed by what is hidden.<br />

My work attempts to appeal to both, our animal and<br />

human <strong>in</strong>st<strong>in</strong>cts,” says Leeah<br />

There were never enough draw<strong>in</strong>g<br />

papers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> house. Leeah Joo’s<br />

earliest childhood memories <strong>in</strong>clude<br />

search<strong>in</strong>g for scraps of paper to draw<br />

on. Her mo<strong>the</strong>r had to stow away all mails and<br />

bills so <strong>the</strong> toddler wouldn’t scrawl on <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

With a sculptor fa<strong>the</strong>r and an illustrator mo<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

leeah was exposed to artists and art-mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

early on. Born <strong>in</strong> Seoul South Korea <strong>in</strong> 1971,<br />

she grew up dream<strong>in</strong>g of becom<strong>in</strong>g a manga<br />

artist one day. At age ten, she moved to <strong>the</strong><br />

United States with her family. She studied<br />

pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g and art history at Indiana University<br />

<strong>in</strong> Bloom<strong>in</strong>gton, where she fell <strong>in</strong> love with <strong>the</strong><br />

traditions <strong>in</strong> Western pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g. S<strong>in</strong>ce complet<strong>in</strong>g<br />

her MFA <strong>in</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g from Yale School of Art <strong>in</strong><br />

1996, her work has been widely exhibited <strong>in</strong><br />

U.S. and South Korea. She lives <strong>in</strong> Connecticut<br />

with her family where she divides her time<br />

pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g and teach<strong>in</strong>g at Sou<strong>the</strong>rn CT State<br />

University and Paier College.<br />
