Community 

Project to restore Chesterfield Canal’s 

missing link at Renishaw 

A disused section of the Chesterfield Canal is to be 

restored by Derbyshire County Council and Chesterfield 

Canal Trust for the benefit of local residents, visitors and 

wildlife. 

The mile-long section in Renishaw, which lies close to the 

original canal alignment, is land-locked and virtually 

empty of water. 

Work is needed, subject to planning permission, to make 

the structure watertight and rebuild the overflow-weir 

so it is ready to connect to further sections of the canal 

when they are restored. A temporary pumping system 

would need to be installed to supply water from the 

River Rother to the canal and the towpath resurfaced to 

make it suitable for pedestrians and cyclists. 

Further work is also proposed to resurface a further 915 

metres of towpath to provide a circular 2.5km surfaced 

route incorporating the Trans-Pennine Trail. And new 

picnic benches, signage and cycle stands would also be 

installed.

The original canal was completed in 1777 and stretched 

46 miles in total, providing navigation between the River 

Rother at Chesterfield and the River Trent at West Stockwith 

in Nottinghamshire. The section in Renishaw was 

rerouted in the 19th century with the building of railways. 

whole route from Chesterfield to Kiveton navigable with 

nine miles yet to be restored. 

Councillor Carolyn Renwick, Derbyshire County Council’s 

Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Environment, 

said: “The Chesterfield Canal is an important part of our 

county’s industrial heritage, built as a trade route at the 

dawn of the industrial revolution. 

“As well as improving the area visually, restoring the 

Renishaw link will bring opportunities for recreation as 

well as improving biodiversity. And it will take us one 

step closer to opening up the whole route to canal boats 

which would bring further economic benefits from the 

increase in tourism.” 

The restoration is expected to cost around £400,000 with 

the council contributing £200,000, the Trust providing 

£150,000 and the remaining £50,000 being funded by 

the Inland Waterways Association. The work will be done 

by volunteers from the Trust. 

Peter Hardy, Chair of the Chesterfield Canal Trust, said: 

“We know that local residents are keen to see the 

re-watering of the canal around Renishaw and this 

project has been made possible thanks to the close 

cooperation between the Trust and Derbyshire County 

Council. It’s also thanks to the enthusiasm of local people 

who will join with us to create an area they will be proud 

of for walking, cycling, fishing and watersports. 

This latest project – which is being carried out by the 

council and the Trust as part of the Chesterfield Canal 

Partnership – is part of a wider ambition to make the

Ridgeway Primary School 

How long has Ridgeway Primary School been 

with us? In 2024 it will be 150 years. 

To celebrate this achievement the school and 

the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) are 

seeking contact with ex-pupils and ex-teachers, 

or their families. We want them to tell us of 

their memories and experiences of their time 

at Ridgeway and maybe even to loan pictures 

or other souvenirs to display in school. 

Of particular interest would be information 

about the Armed service personnel whose 

names appear on the village war memorial. 

Also, of great interest would be if anybody 

knows of anyone of fame or infamy who went 

to the school, whether they be a ‘Vera Lynn’ 

or a ‘Blackbeard the pirate’!

During wartime were any of you evacuated or 

more likely had evacuees come to stay? Are 

you still in contact? What was the school like 

during the wars or the harsh winter of 1947? 

The 1959 or 1976 droughts? Were you 

affected by the 1963 gales? 

How did the school celebrate Royal events? 

The death of Queen Victoria, the Coronation 

of Queen Elizabeth II or the marriage of the 

Prince of Wales? 

Are you in touch with any former pupils or 

staff who may have emigrated to Australia, 

New Zealand, Canada, South Africa or 

anywhere else in the world. We would love to 

hear from them, how their time at Ridgeway 

Primary School prepared them for living 

abroad. 

The school at Ridgeway has been extended 

twice. Once on the uphill side to provide much 

needed office space and hidden away at the 

far end away from the road. This to provide 

classroom space for the Early Years learners.

The Eurovision Party is coming to Sheffield! 

Who said Liverpool is going to have all the fun? The official 

Eurovision party will be coming to Sheffield too! 

On Saturday 13 May 2023, as the world finds out who will 

be crowned Eurovision winners 2023 (and who ends up 

getting “nul point”) Sheffield will be hosting a its own 

Eurovision party, teaming up with the Sheffield Ukrainian 

Community to bring on a show like the city has never seen 

before.

Featuring a big screen on Devonshire Green, Sheffield’s 

free 2 official Eurovision Party will be jam packed with all of 

the Euro music glitz and glam you have come to expect 

including street performers, dance acts, traditional 

Ukrainian musicians and Sheffield will be playing host to 

Marina Krutь – Marina came second in the competition to 

be this year’s Ukrainian entry with 33,000 votes and will be 

travelling over from Ukraine to join the party. 

Some big surprises which will be announced in the coming 

weeks mean Sheffield’s Eurovision party is not to be missed. 

Chief Executive for Sheffield City Council, Kate Josephs 

said: “We are so excited to be hosting an official Eurovision 

party right here in the city centre alongside and in solidarity 

with the Ukrainian community of Sheffield. 

“We were disappointed to miss out to Liverpool, but this 

means that we are still going to play a huge part in the 

celebrations and everyone can be a part of it. 

“As an official partner of the BBC, the whole show will 

feature on our big screen on Devonshire Green and the 

team are working hard to make sure we have a jam-packed 

day of Eurovision fun. 

“Sheffield’s Ukrainian community are central to our party 

and we are incredibly excited to host some of Ukraine’s
