SIXTY FIVE community groups 

will take part in Saturday’s 

Mother of All Clean Ups – 

making it the biggest yet. 

Hundreds of people will clean 

the Heathcote River, the Estuary, 

Lyttelton Harbour Basin and 

Avon River. 

The first annual 

clean-up in 2015 

involved only 

five community 

groups, Avon 

Heathcote 

Estuary Ihutai 

Trust manager 

Tanya Jenkins 

said. 

The trust was 

one of the project’s founders.

Jenkins said the groups will be 

allocated a waterway and then 

will encourage members to get 

involved. 

The Mt Pleasant Yacht Club 

and Ferrymead Rotary Club are 

among those taking part. 

“It’s all about encouraging 

community groups,” Jenkins said. 

While the total waste collected 

has trended downward from 10.5 

tonnes in 2016 to 2.6 tonnes in 

2021, the amount of rubbish in 

waterways remains an ongoing 

issue.

Ballerina’s big dream a step closer

IZZY HOULT is heading to 

London in June to help make 

her dream of becoming a prima 

ballerina come true. 

The 15-year-old has been 

dancing since she was four. 

Now, 11 years later, she will 

attend the Rambert School of

summer intensive, a programme 

that only accepts 30 dancers a 

year worldwide. 

Alumni include Sir Frederick 

Ashton CBE, founding choreographer 

of the Royal Ballet in 

London, and ballerina Carolina 

Cortesi. 

In March 2017, Cortesi was 

offered a two-year soloist 

contract with Plzen Ballet in the 

Czech Republic. 

The Rambert School summer 

class will help Izzy on her 

journey to becoming a prima 

ballerina – a ballerina who is first 

in their company and performs 

lead roles. 

“My favourite ballets are the 

classics, Romeo and Juliet, Swan 

Lake and Giselle. So to dance the 

lead roles in those ballets would 

be an honour,” she said. 

“I just want to keep improving, 

striving to push my boundaries 

and limits.” 

Izzy has been to a summer 

intensive at the Dutch 

National Academy of Ballet in 

Amsterdam, making this her 

second international trip. 

She dances at Anna Lee 

School of Dance for 30-35 hours 

each week and attends Te Kura 

correspondence school. 

Izzy’s mornings are dedicated 

to schoolwork, but she will dance 

from 1-8pm most days. 

“My studio is my home, my 

happy place,” she said. 

“I remember when I was six 

and was at my old studio in the 

Tai Tapu hall and early Saturday 

morning I would have rehearsal, 

it was so cold you could see my 

breath, but leg warmers and all, 

it felt like home, ballet is where I 

belong.” 

But getting to London will be 

no easy feat. 

Last Wednesday, Izzy’s family 

held a fundraising night, with 

members of the Little River 

community coming to hear 

guest speakers talk about their 

life experiences and challenges. 

At $35 per person, plus 

donations from those who 

couldn’t be at the fundraiser, 

Izzy and her family raised $1300 

for her trip and course fees. 

When she was about 12, 

Izzy knew she wanted to be a 

professional dancer. 

She looks up to world-class 

ballerinas like Marianela Nunez 

of the Royal Ballet. 

“She’s just incredible to 

watch.” 

Another idol is Gillian 

Murphy, whom Izzy admires for 

her skill – and partly because she 

is a fellow redhead. 

Izzy’s last competition was 

the Alana Hains Australasian 

Awards in Wellington. 

She placed 25th out of 200 in 

her category and was one of the 

youngest in the group. 

“Being onstage with the lights 

and costumes feels amazing and 

so rewarding,” she said. 

“Having the opportunity 

to share my love and passion 

with the audience makes all the 

training and hours of rehearsals 

in pointe shoes all worth it.”

‘Pick up 5’ a new 

waste initiative

“We’re hoping every year to see a 

reduction in the amount of litter we pick 

up,” Jenkins said. 

“We do have an issue – let’s solve it.” 

Heathcote Ward city councillor Sara 

Templeton has been involved with the 

clean-ups since they began. 

“I helped out at the first clean up back 

in 2015 when I was chair of the (former) 

Hagley/Ferrymead Community Board 

and have been a big supporter ever since,” 

Templeton said. 

She usually cleans up around either the 

Tannery or Windsport Park on Dyers Rd. 

“It’s been amazing watching it grow 

year by year . . . The Heathcote Ward has 

many waterways. Smaller ones that come 

down from the Port Hills, the Ōpāwaho 

Heathcote River and, of course, the 

estuary.” 

The event will include a new initiative 

this year – the High Five, I Can Pick Up 

Five campaign. 

It encourages everyone to pick up five 

pieces of litter outside their home. 

“The pick up five campaign is something 

people should be doing all year round,” 

Jenkins said. 

“If we all pick up five pieces of rubbish . 

. . that would be awesome. Then we’ll have 

the cleanest city in the country.”

New Brighton Library at 9am. Bring 

closed-toed shoes, appropriate 

clothing for the weather, and a 

reusable drink bottle. 

MARLEY, MAX 

And A PEnGUIn 

Marley 

The week started off with Marley, a sweet 

1 year old DSH that arrived from the 

after-hours clinic with an oblique right 

distal humeral fracture, no doubt a run in 

with a car. Marley didn’t seem to know he 

was in pain. He purred his way through 

the physical exam and blood testing, 

gobbled up his food and was a delight to 

care for. 

Marley’s owners adored him but their pet 

insurance hadn’t yet kicked in so surgical 

referral for a plate and screws was out 

of the question. Lucky for Marley, our 

new Veterinarian Jack, put his hand up 

to repair the fracture with pin and wire 

stabilisation. Surgery proceeded without 

a hitch and we were rapt with the 

post op radiographs. To date, Marley is 

doing really well, weight bearing on the 

operated leg, although going a little stir 

crazy with cage confinement. All going 

well, he’ll be watching the birds, climbing 

trees again in about 5 weeks time.

Next up was Steve’s second cataract 

surgery on another Yellow Eyed Penguin 

from the Dunedin Wildlife Hospital. 

Steve’s becoming a bit of a gun with bird’s 

eyes. It’s a great learning experience for 

our team as well as birds have different 

requirements under anaesthesia. His first 

successful cataract on Mr Sandymount 

was a huge success, with his vision being 

excellent. Here is a close up of his eye 

looking fantastic post surgery.

Max 

Lastly we diagnosed FIP ( Feline 

Infectious Peritonitis) in our own 

special 7 year old ginger “Maximus”. 

A real shock for us as FIP is relatively 

uncommon and affects usually 

younger, pedigree cats. Max didn’t 

fit the signalment. He was behaving 

weirdly - sleeping in the garage, 

growling at Atticus (and us) and then 

he completely stopped eating. He also 

had intermittent fevers. Max lives for his 

tucker so we knew this was serious. We 

carried out a series of testing including 

blood tests, abdominal ultrasounds, 

biopsies and then we got the dreaded 

diagnosis. 

Thanks to Covid there has been heaps 

of development with antiviral drugs and 

now we have a drug that can attempt to 

beat this usually incurable disease. 

We had to specially formulate 

Remdesivir for Max and order it in. 

72 hours after starting this impressive 

drug, Max was eating on his own, 

purring and for the first time in months, 

and attempting some interaction with 

Atticus. Plus he had moved back to 

sleeping with us. 

A total win.

high for bowls club

A function and trophy presentation was held at Burnside Bowling Club on Saturday 

to mark the end of the season. The club’s publicity officer Kerrie Bruce reports 

SEVERAL SPECIAL guests were 

among the crowd at Burnside’s 

annual closing day function. 

After the flag was lowered to 

mark the end of the summer 

bowls season on Saturday, club 

patron Mayor Phil Mauger spoke 

to members. 

He said the club was “a 

fantastic asset for the local 

neighbourhood and for our 

city”. 

“The level of success is a result 

of having such a strong club.” 

Canterbury Charity Hospital 

Trust chair Philip Bagshaw and 

Dame Sue Bagshaw were also 

invited to accept a $600 donation 

to the hospital. 

Other guests included 

city councillor Sam MacDonald 

and Bowls Canterbury general 

manager Lorraine McLeod. 

Several fun activities and games 

were held including a match 

between the men’s and women’s 

club championship winners. 

There was no trophy on the 

line, just bragging rights. The 

men won all of the games except 

one. 

A the prize-giving ceremony, 

Richard Hocking was named 

men’s player of the year. 

Hocking had a big season with 

a number of highlights including 

three Burnside championship 

titles, Canterbury Centre 

men’s singles runner-up, and 

Stewart Buttar Burnside pairs 

tournament runner-up. 

He also received a silver star 

for reaching 12 Burnside titles. 

Tayla Bruce was named 

women’s player of the year. 

Bruce’s highlights included two 

Commonwealth Games bronze 

medals, a world champion of 

champion women’s singles gold 

medal, and gold in the multinations 

women’s triples and 

national pairs. 

The Burnside women’s under-5 

singles winner was Jill Lee who 

also took out the Canterbury 

Centre champions of champions 

women’s under-5 singles.

IF A new Toyota Land Cruiser is 

on your wish-list but you have a 

few extra notes in the bank, the 

Lexus LX 500d is the next best 

option. 

It’s a Land Cruiser on steroids 

in terms of specification and 

luxury and it sits in a part of the 

market that has little competition 

in terms of prestige and 

ability than, say, Range Rover. 

What’s more, it’s an easy decision 

to make if you have decided 

on Lexus, there are just two 

models – F-Sport and Limited 

both are priced at $175,900. 

As its nomenclature suggests 

the F-Sport has design elements 

that are a little on the sporty side 

– black mesh grille, unique front 

and rear bumpers – while inside 

there are aluminium centre 

console panels and coloured seat 

coverings. The Limited has a 

chrome slatted grille, woodgrain 

shift panel, wood-rimmed steering 

wheel and full black leather. 

The only other real difference 

lies with the suspension, the F- 

Sport gets what Lexus describes 

as performance dampers. In 

effect, the ride is just marginally 

firmer, although I certainly 

couldn’t detect much difference 

between the standard settings 

and those fitted to the F-Sport; 

I climbed out of it and stepped 

straight into the Limited, there 

was no immediate feeling of 

change. 

Of course, if you were to 

explore all of the driveline settings 

and functions that make 

the Land Cruiser/LX 500d so 

capable, the chassis and suspension 

settings would then come 

into play. 

However, as capable as it is

Lexus models charging through 

the bush or high country tracks, 

it is far more of a civilised sevenseat 

family wagon that will lend 

itself to any challenge, especially 

in terms of towing, it is rated 

with a 3500kg figure. If towing 

a horse float or boat for your 

recreational pursuits is what you 

require, then the Lexus in this 

form is the vehicle for you. It is 

a true sport utility vehicle with 

luxury and quality elements that 

are true to the Lexus ethos. For 

the children in the second row of 

seats, each can be entertained by 

their own personal screens fixed 

to the rear of the front seat head 

rests. 

Under the bonnet sits a new 

V6 diesel engine that also comes 

courtesy of Land Cruiser. The 

best way it can be described is it 

is much the same design as the 

old V8 that powered previous 

generation models, but with two 

cylinders fewer. It does get the 

benefit of a twin turbocharging 

system which provides power 

outputs greater than previously, 

it is rated at 227kW and 

a stunning 700Nm. Add in the 

coupling to a 10-speed automatic 

transmission, the relay of power 

to each corner is seamless and 

constant, there’s never a point 

when accelerator input isn’t met. 

The LX 500d is chock full of 

the luxury ingredients you get 

with any model from the Lexus 

stable, that’s something the

A Christchurch car dealer is offering a new and 

innovative way to trade-in your old car and help those 

in need at the same time. 

Tim Koller Motor Company (TKMC) is offering car 

owners the opportunity to donate their old vehicles 

with the proceeds going to World Vision New Zealand. 

Mr Koller says the initiative saves car owners the 

arduous process of selling a second-hand vehicle and 

means they help people living in the world’s toughest 

places. 

“We know that most people hate the process of selling 

a car. It’s a hassle, it’s stressful and it’s hard work! This 

initiative means people avoid the pain of trying to find 

a private buyer or negotiate a trade-in. 

“Now, they can simply donate their car and the sale 

proceeds will be used to help World Vision deliver 

emergency food to hungry children; clean water and 

sanitation to improve the health of entire communities; 

and provide safe spaces for children fleeing from 

violence and conflict. It’s a win-win!”, Mr Koller says. 

He says he came up with the idea when dealing with 

an elderly client who was disappointed at the trade-in 

price offered for her old car. She said she’d rather “give 

it away”. 

“That got me thinking,” Mr Koller says. “What if there 

was a way we could avoid the disappointment of a 

trade-in offer, which is often a lot less than people 

are expecting, but still take the car and leave people 

feeling good as well. The car donation project is the 

answer,” he says. 

The proceeds from all donated cars will go to World 

Vision New Zealand. World Vision New Zealand 

International Partnership Director, TJ Grant, says 

partners like Mr Koller are invaluable. 

“World Vision is working with some of the most 

vulnerable children and families in the world and we 

see desperate need on a daily basis – children who 

are starving; families who are unwell because they 

have no clean water to drink; girls who are denied the 

right to go to school; and children who are forced into 

work. Donations from compassionate Kiwis can help 

these children to thrive and live life in all its fullness,” 

he says. 

Mr Koller says World Vision pursues the highest 

standards of stewardship and accountability with 

84.6 cents in the dollar going directly to international 

programming. 

“I love World Vision’s approach of giving people a 

hand up, not a hand out. They help to empower people 

out of poverty and build lasting change,” he says.
