The result condensesthe race for asemi final in the pool, with four teams — including Kaiapoi and Saracens — separatedatthe top by only one point. Ashley had to work hard in the closing quarter beforeheadingoff Southern 3429, and Ohoka posted adeserved 4226 win over West Melton. GlenmarkCheviot beat long time rival Southbridge 3824 after leading 265 at half time, while Oxford broke its horror start to the season with a4023 win over Lincoln Rolleston. Woodend always hadMethven in its sight, but could not get the break it desperately wanted, going down3439. His reward came last Saturday, when, as the Kaiapoi captain, and having just playedhis 100th match for the team, he held aloft the Deans Shield after his team beat the previously unbeaten Saracens side 3327 to put the seal on asuccessful Club day. The regard in which Hurring is held by his teammates was apparent at the aftermatch functionwhen they honoured him with aparticularly spirited haka after he was presented with his Centurions’ blazer. While the matchwas pepperedwith penalties, it was still an enjoyable spectacle withboth teams havingperiods of dominance. For the first half hour it was all Saracens who gained the lion’sshare of possession. CalebPomareEdwards openedthe scoring with apenalty and lock Daniel Bateup wasonhandtobenefit from some quick thinking by the Saracens halfback, Marty Lockyer. Then came what wasprobably the try of the match whenSaracens launched a counter attack from deep withintheir own territory. Almost half the team was involved in some slickinterpassing,but it was No 8 Proud moment ... Kaiapoi had barelyfired ashot to this point but suddenly the team,and in particular, tighthead prop Zach Andrews, burst into life. Within the space of 7minutes he scored twice with strong runs and Taine Jacobs Lawson’s conversions closed the gap. But Saracens was not done. Toby Ashby, who was particularly impressive on the left wing, hit the line at pace and almost scored.Saracens managed to recyclethe ball and afew phases later Ashby got his just reward by dotting down in the corner to allow Saracenstotake adeserved 2014 lead to the break. But the second half was averydifferent story. Kaiapoi found its mojo. Fullback Matty Joyita scored immediatelyafter the resumption to give his team alead it never surrendered. The insertion of lock Connor Smith off the bench after alengthyinjury break, helped Kaiapoi to gain amuch more even share of possession, and as the game went on the forward pack, with hooker Kafu Misiuata to the fore, gained the upper hand over Saracens. Saracens seemedtoget rattled and started to make some uncharacteristic errors. Late in the matchhooker Jordie Smith who impressed with afine allround game, scored atry that gave Saracens abonus point that could well proveinvaluable. But with time almost up, Kaiapoiresponded in the best way possible by surging back on to attack, andJacobsLawson sealed the deal by landing his third penaltygoal of the half.Lance Taylor who had made agood fist of playing at halfback, had also added one while JacobsLawson wasinthe sinbin. So although Saracens scored 4tries to 3, in the end it was theimpeccable goalkicking of JacobsLawsonthat made the difference. He landed all 6ofhis kicks at goal. many of the them longrange efforts. Kaiapoi 33 (Zach Andrews(2), Matty Joyita tries,Taine JacobsLawson 3conversions, 3penalties, Lance Taylor 1penalty) beat Saracens 27 (Daniel Bateup, Kerran Jenkins, Toby Ashby, JordieSmith tries, Caleb PomareEdwards 2conversions,1 penalty). GlenmarkCheviot v Southbridge GlenmarkCheviotheaded south to Southbridge, hopingtocontinue the momentum built from the previous week. But it was undernoillusions about the challenge ahead. The match started at a frantic pace with the opening try coming in just the third minute. The GlenmarkCheviot forwards rolled up their sleeves, knuckleddown and were rewarded with atry to captain Andrew Hull. Southbridgeresponded soon after with atry of its own. Butonly minutes laterthe Glenmark forwards were at it again with Nick Hydebarging overclose to the line. Both teams then set to their work with neither side gaining areal stranglehold on the gameuntil late in the first half. The forwards were at it again, rewarded with another try to lock Tom Blyth. In the last play before half time winger Matt Earl wasthe benefactor of atry, after somestrongforward work. Half time score 265 to GlenmarkCheviot. The secondhalf was acontinuation of the first with Glenmark’sforwards again musclingup, only 6minutes, for Ethan McDuff to finish with atry on the wing.
