Acake, aparty, aMayor and the Wizard
By STAFF REPORTERS
There were Union Jacks, ahearty
amount of good cheer, creamed scones,
pikelets and hot cups of tea at a
coronation street party in Rangiora on
Saturday.
Held on the corner of King and
Charles Streets, residents joined
together to celebrate the coronation of
King Charles III, meet their neighbours,
and enjoy each other’s company.
There was asprinkling of special
guests including Waimakariri Mayor
Dan Gordon, and the Wizard of New
Zealand ,members of Alf’s Imperial
Army and aPiper helping set the scene.
Coorganiser, Sam Fisher, says he could
have gone on holiday for what the
celebration had cost him. ‘‘But this was
much more fun,’’ he says.
Christine Scott, Jan Herbert and
Kingsley Howie say they all
remembered the coronation of Queen
Elizabeth II and were happy Prince
Charles had finally ascended to the
throne after so many years waiting.
Sam’s helpers included Alan and
Linda Geeves and Keith Garlick, who
were keen to acknowledge the
uniqueness of the area around the
intersection of King and Charles
Streets.
Music and games kept the crowd
entertained before arambling speech by
wellknown orator, the Wizard of New
Zealand, a.k.a Ian Brackenbury
Channell, who says he remembered the
last coronation in 1953 when he was
working as sales rep in England.
The Wizard and Mayor Gordon cut a
special coronation cake supplied by
Artisan by Rangiora Bakery.
Sam has now declared himself the
selfappointed Rangiora’s official Town
Crier, and is keen to try and connect
people, through celebrations and
events.
‘‘The coronation party was about
community —get together and work
together.
‘‘That is how aTown Crier can make a
difference, by help get the community
back on the right footing after the trials
Covid19 created.
‘‘Let’s move forward.’’
Thereisscrubbing up to dine,asitturns
out, with the future King —Charles III.
But scrubbing askirt you planned to
wear to the dinner,afterfinding it
flattenedinthe middleofabusy
Christchurch streetatrush hour,takes
gettingspruced up to awholenew level.
It was 1994, and PennyZino, who is
well knownfor her beautiful Flaxmere
Garden in North Canterburywhich
covers 3.2 hectares of former farmland,
was mourning the lossofher husband
John,who had died two daysearlier,
when acallcame inviting her to dine
with Prince Charles.
The message wastaken by afriend,
who had come to helpPennythroughher
sad time.Neither women took it
seriously, until an invitation arrived
inviting Penny to the dinner with 10
others at the Park Royal in Christchurch
in amonths time.
Pennyand agood friend set off to town,
to get Penny ready for the eventather
innercity flat.
All was going well, until they couldnot
find the skirt she planned to wear. They
hunted high and low, in the flat, the
luggage, in the car, everywhere they
couldthinkof.
It was looking like Penny may have to
wear her gardening gear.
Then her friend thoughttocheck the
busy road outside. And there, sure
enough, was the skirt. It was in the
middleofthe road, having beenrun over
dozensoftimes.
It seems it had floated off the hanger
when they unloaded.
The twofell about laughing, before
setting to worktoscrub the flattened
skirt and ensure Penny made her very
importantdate on time.
Penny sat next to Prince Charles, or
King Charles as he is now, for at leastan
hour.
He initiated much of the conversation
and Penny foundhim very personable,
and easy to talk with.
He broughtupthe 1992 fireatWindsor
Castle, and Penny asked him about his
own garden and its organic practices.
She said if someoneoffered you abag
of apples full of codling moth, and abag
of apples without codling moth,which
would you choose? At which Prince
Charles only chuckled. His views since
have provedtobeprescient,and many of
his ideas which werethought of as
somewhat eccentric, have now entered
the mainstream and are widely accepted.
Highgrove House gardens are managed
organically, with anaturalpest control
programme that does not require the use
of harmfulchemical insecticides.
Biomass boilers are usedtoheat
Highgrove House, the Orchard Room,
stables and offices.Most of theelectricity
used elsewhere is sourced from a
renewable energy supplier, from solar
panelsonthe farm barns and ground
sourceheat pumps. Aspeciallybuilt
reed bed sewage system, muchloved by
dragonflies at its treatment end, is used
for all Highgrove’s waste.Gutter
rainwater is used to irrigate the garden.
But in 1994 whenPennyhad dinner
with the prince,the concept of
‘sustainability’ had hardly entered the
lexicon.
PrinceCharles was introducedto
Penny as having alargegarden, and it
was then he madethe comment: “How
are yourhands?” to whichPenny replied
“They have scrubbed up quite nicely to
see you!”
To which he agreed.
Gardeners speak acommon language,
and thestate of their hands, knees and
backs is arecurring theme.
New development ...
An artist’s impression of aproposed development on the corner of High and Ashley Streets, Rangiora.
IMAGE: WAIMAKARIRI DISTRICTCOUNCIL
Proposal evokes mixed reaction
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
News of anew twostorey development
in Rangiora’s town centre has been met
with amixed reaction.
The Waimakariri District Council has
announced vacant commercial land on
the corner of High and Ashley Streets
has been sold, along with the building
occupied by the BNZ bank.
The new owners, Cornershop
Investments, have released aconcept
image of atwostorey building with
office and retail space.
But residents have taken to social
media to question the need for more
retail and office space, and raised
concern about the lack of carparks.
Mayor Dan Gordon said the sale was a
good outcome for such ahigh profile
site, on the corner of two busy streets.
‘‘We are thrilled to be working
alongside developers and shaping the
ongoing growth and development of
Rangiora.
‘‘Residents often tell us one of the
things they value the most about living
in Waimakariri is the unique character
of our townships and we are really
pleased this project will continue to
build on Rangiora’s character, look and
feel.’’
Cornershop Investments is made up of
Eileen and Murray Irvine, Bridget Hope
and Gabe Rijpma, and Andrea and Jake
Gardner.
The Irvines had been involved in
other developments in Rangiora’s town
centre including the Good Street
laneway.
‘‘We all strongly believe in the future
of Rangiora and are proud to be able to
assist in its growth,’’ Mr Irvine said.
The response on social media has
been mixed, with anumber of people
expressing support.
‘‘Amazing, very exciting for
Rangiora,’’ said one comment.
One person said ‘‘very cool!’’, while
another said ‘‘looks great, nice work
Waimakariri District Council.’’
But others raised concerns about
empty office and retail spaces already
on High Street, alack of carparks, the
loss of greenspace and high priced
leases.
‘‘Looks great, but what will go in
there? The new building opposite this
site has been empty since it was built,’’
said one respondent.
‘‘Looks nice, but is it actually needed?
Ithink anice green space with seating
would be nice,’’ said another.
AFulton Hoganspokesperson says
about500m3 of unsuitable material,
including the demolished existing
structure,was removed fromthe site.
Five precast concrete box culverts,
weighingmore than 10 tonne each,
were then put in place.
The spokesperson sayslocal
propertyowners took akeen interest
in the works, and were
accommodatingand provided insights
into the surroundingarea.
‘‘Especiallywhenwediscovered a
area.
‘‘These were dealt with by amember
In addition, excavations uncovered
the piles from the original bridge
structure built over100 years ago.
Thesewere assessed and recordedby
an archaeologist.
The spokesperson saysanimportant
part was maintaining an unobstructed
stream diversion,allowingspecies to
travel up and down the stream.
Nearly complete ... Work continues on the Butchers Road culvert installation by Fulton
Hogan.
PHOTO:JOHN COSGROVE
To do this Fulton Hogan first built a
stream diversion to isolate the work
area, then had all the fish safely
removed from the workarea by an
ecologist.
‘‘The ecologist then placed all
removed fish back into the stream,
before the work area was dewatered
ready for work to start.’’
The culvert installation is expected
to be completed laterthismonth.
Problems with the old structure were
first drawn to the council’s attention
in earlyFebruary, 2022, whenahole
appeared in the road surfacedirectly
above the culvert on Butchers Road
following aheavy rain event.
Over the next twodays this
worsened and an inspection
highlighted buckling of the armco
culvert at key stress points, weakening
the structure.
Three Waters reform
divides council
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Waimakariri’s councillors are divided
over whether to cooperate with the
Three Waters reform process.
The Waimakariri District Council
last week voted in favour of receiving
astaff report on aschedule of
properties to be submitted to the
Department of Internal Affairs (DIA),
but four councillors voted against it.
Three waters manager Kalley
Simpson said the schedule of
properties was to help the DIA’s
National Transition Unit identify
what land would need to be handed
over to the new regional entity, and
what would remain with the council.
‘‘The way the Water Services
Legalisation Bill is written, if we don’t
put together alist, the default position
is that all land wholly and partially
related to the provision of water
services is transferred.’’
The draft schedule identified 270
properties, including 74 which were
solely used for drinking water,
wastewater or stormwater services.
Afurther 112 properties were used
for multiple purposes, 18 were partly
occupied for water services assets and
66 properties were on road reserve,
Crown, private or Environment
Canterbury land.
Mayor Dan Gordon voted to receive
the staff report.
‘‘Hopefully this is just an academic
exercise, because there is alot of
water to go under the bridge,’’ he said,
in reference to the pending Court of
Appeal case about Three Waters
infrastructure ownership and the
October general election.
In ashakeup last month, the
government is now proposing 10 large
regional water service entities across
the country, instead of four.
It wants the new entities to own the
infrastructure, rather than local
councils, to better fund future
investment.
The National Party said it will
repeal Labour's changes if it comes to
power in October.
Deputy Mayor Neville Atkinson said
he was concerned about the council’s
ability to respond to anatural disaster
without the infrastructure and
associated staff.
‘‘We are going to have to respond in
the event of anatural disaster for
years to come even if we no longer own
the assets, because our community
will expect us too.’’
Cr Philip Redmond was among
those against cooperating with the
reform process.
‘‘We are acting in good faith and that
is all very well, but the government
hasn’t acted in good faith, it’s not
listening to us, so I’m voting against it.
Are you looking to build your dream
home in North Canterbury this year?
If so, the Build7 team would love tohear from you!
This month we share more about Build7 owners Fran and Jamie
Cowan’s own home build. “We know many of our customers love villas.
We also want to inspire people to think about what they would have
in their dream house, whether that is anew character home or one
with the sleek lines and shapes of acontemporary build,” Fran says.
Whatever your preference, Build7 is the perfect place to come if you
are looking for help with designing and building your dream home.
Fran and Jamie’s villa
Well things are steaming along with our new villa build, despite April’s
short weeks. When writing this column, our staircase was being
installed. Amomentous occasion in any building project, when you no
longer have to climb ladders, but can feel exactly what it is going to be
like living in your new home.
Wall panelling is also being added, giving astrong sense of what the
villa’s interior will look like. We have opted for wainscoting, which is
panelling that usually occupies one third of the wall, leaving the top
thirds to paint or wallpaper. This type of panelling was historically used
to protect walls from furniture and scuff marks but today it is primarily
added to bring that substance and character that we equate with
traditional family homes.
In our new villa we are using wainscoting in all rooms, except the two
children’s bedrooms, where we are adding board and batten panelling
to cover two thirds of the walls. The upper third will be covered in
wallpapers –achocolate brown, blue and white gingham style check
in one of our young son’s rooms and afresh blue and white rattan
textured paper in the other. Inour own room, the wainscoting will cover
half the wall with the other half papered in agreeny blue grasscloth
paper.
It’s all coming together now, and we can’t wait to share what it will
look like. Both the interior and exterior of our villa have been designed
to stand the test of time and last us well into the future asafamily. As
time goes by we may need to re-wallpaper or paint to freshen things
up but otherwise all aspects of this house are being built for the very
long term.
We hope you are drawing inspiration from our adventure and if you’d
like us to help you with your dream home, please don’t hesitate to get
in touch.
Build7 welcomes new building regulations
Building Code updates that will ensure the delivery of safer and
healthier New Zealand homes came into effect this month.
While many of the adjustments are standards that are already
incorporated into Build7 homes, we’ve been keeping awatchful eye
on these requirements and are here toanswer any questions you may
have.
From 1May 2023, home builds must meet new wall, floor, and roof
insulation requirements that promote energy efficiency and will deliver
long-term cost savings for property owners. Insulation requirements for
doors and windows will be implemented as part of astaged process.
Build7 co-owner Jamie Cowan welcomes the new regulations, saying
they will help to simplify building requirements across the industry.
“The minimum standard isbeing raised, which is definitely apositive
thing,” he says. “The changes will ultimately reduce power costs over
the lifetime of anew home.”
If you’re thinking of building and need toget your head around these
changes, give us acall. We’d be happy to discuss all the details of your
Anger at ECan report
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Environment Canterbury’s river
margins report should be retracted,
and an apology issued to landowners
of theBlythe Riverand all farmers,
says Groundswell NZ environmental
spokesperson Jamie McFadden.
Mr McFadden who is alsochairof
the HurunuibasedRural Advocacy
Network,says an investigationshould
also be heldinto how amultipeer
reviewed report couldbemade public,
with ‘‘such blatant misinformation’’ in
it.
He was commenting on areport by
Environment Canterbury (ECan),
whichidentifiedasignificant lossof
rivermarginacross the Canterbury
region, including an ‘‘80 percentloss
for the Blythe River’’, in North
Canterbury.
ECan,hesays, established thisby
comparingsatellite and aerial
imagery from 2012to2019.
Mr McFadden says farmers arefed
up with constantlybeingportrayed as
environmental villains,
‘‘They (farmers) do not denythat
farming has had detrimental impacts
on the environment, including rivers.
‘‘However, with yet another example
of gross misrepresentation from the
regional council, it is little wonder
people havelost confidence in public
agencies.’’
Mr McFadden says landowners,
some of them whose families have
farmed alongside the Blythe River for
over 50 years, are astounded at the
claims.
‘‘Analysing the different shades of
greenthe scientists established how
much land had been convertedfrom
undeveloped river margin to intensive
agriculture.
‘‘The problem was they got it
horribly wrong.
‘‘Last week Itravelledthe length of
the Blythe River and haddiscussions
withseverallocallandowners.
‘‘Wewereunable to findany
riverbed margin that had been
convertedfrom undevelopedto
intensive agriculture since2012.
‘‘Localsclaim either this was a
deliberate campaigntomislead the
public and attack farmers, or the
scientists had mistakenly assessed the
green fromanunseasonablywet
summer as conversiontointensive
agriculture, or both.
‘‘Eitherway, thepublic has been
massively misled, and the Blythe River
landownersare fuming,’’Mr
McFadden says.
He says river margin landhas been
farmed for well over 100 years, and
thatinvasive willows and stop banks to
protect infrastructureand urban areas
have hadasignificant rolein
constricting rivers.
Mr McFadden questionsifthose
advocating to allow braided rivers to
roam where they want,mean stop
banksshould be removed, such as
alongthe WaimakaririRiver that
protectsChristchurch from being
flooded.
‘‘Or are theyreserving that view just
for farms?’’
Willows were extensively planted to
control flooding riversduringthe
CatchmentBoard era, says Mr
McFadden.
‘‘However,they have been hugely
successful at selfspreading,and
rivers likethe Blythe, nowhave
willows spread along their entire
length. This has affected the Blythe
Rivermargin more extensively than
intensivefarming development.’’
Nature in enamel
By JOHN COSGROVE
Moving from streetart to formalnature
studies, hasn’t been aleap too far for
Kaiapoi artist Sam Young.
‘‘I love natureand my landscapes reflect
thatlove,’’ says the emergingyoung artist,
whose nature inspired landscapes have
beeninbig demand at recent shows.
Sam usesthe unusual medium of
enamel and paintsonboard, not canvas for
his paintings.
He didn't choose enamel, ‘‘enamel chose
me. It was ahappyaccident, itjust sort of
fellinto place’’.
‘‘I had some enamel spray cans and was
mucking arounddoing street art stencil
style paintings justfor fun, but Ireally
wanted to get into naturescenes and
landscapes.’’
He thoughtabout doingitwith the spray
paint, which turnedout to fit withwhathe
was trying to achieve.
‘‘Peopleseemedtorespondtoitwell so
Ijust kept going.’’
The unusual techniqueiscertainly
working for him. It appeals to customers —
selling 17 paintings at the recent
Christchurch Art Show.
‘‘The best complimentIgetispeople
coming up to me at shows and saying, my
paintingsdon't looklike anyoneelse's.
Sam is this years guestartistfor the
annual Kaiapoi Art ExpoonJuly 8.
He has been painting for about15years
and saysheenteredthe Expo onceyears
ago.
‘‘Itwas my first opportunity to exhibit my
worktothe public,but then Ididn't reenter
againuntil 2018.’’ Developing his
style in the intervening years has paid off
as Sam incorporates many different
techniquesinto his paintings.
‘‘Whether that’s spraying directly on to
the panel or moretraditional brushwork,
or scraping with palette knives or using
sponges or pieces of cardboardand even
bicyclespokes.
Nature Captured ... Kaiapoi artist Sam
Young loves capturing the colour of nature
in his paintings using avariety of
techniques.
PHOTO: SUPPLIED
‘‘I think what Idoisfairly
unconventional and my toolkit reflects
that,’’ he says.
As for inspiration, it mostly comes from
nature.
‘‘I get my ideas fromthe natural world.
There's so much complexity and beauty in
nature that it'sanobvious source of fuel for
the creative fire.’’
Taking risks with his work and exploring
new waysofpainting has helpedSam
Youngfall into aniche where he’s very
comfortable.
‘‘Our evening walk is agroup event, and
all our scouts in attendance will earn their
‘‘We welcome any parents or siblings to
Jenefersays it’s achance for all the
Action urged on gulls
By RACHEL MACDONALD
The dangers posed by people,vehicles
and dogs to the nestingbirds in braided
riversand estuaries are well known,
and have beenwidelypublicised.
Less wellknown,says the Ashley
Rakahuri Groupoperations manager,
Grant Davey, is the threattowards
nesting birdsfrom native blackbacked
gulls.
The outlet of the Ashley Rivermouth
has changed location, says Grant,and
the colonies of blackbacked gullshave
expanded to the north.
‘‘In particular, theyare forcing
endangered specieslike banded
dotterills out of theirhabitat, and
whitefronted ternsare taking a
hammering,hesays.
‘‘The gulls go through the nests and
clean out the eggs, and eat the
nestlings.
‘‘Two of them can be disastrous —
just imagine the damage 500 can do,’’
Mr Daveysays.
He says the Department of
Conservation, Environment
Canterbury and the Waimakariri
District Council need to ‘‘step up, get
together and sort something out’’.
The gulls are not anew problem.
There is documentation of the issue
from the 20s.
‘‘So they've been athreat for almost
100 years.
‘‘However, the populationhas
expanded hugely since the onset of
arablefarming.
‘‘If you drive past apaddock after its
been ploughed,they’re thick on the
ground.’’
He says the only birdsthat seem to be
able to cope with the big blackbacked
gull colonies are the wrybills.
‘‘There’s aMasterofSciences student
from the UniversityofCanterbury,
Causing damage ... Blackbacked gulls
pose athreat to endangered river birds.
PHOTO: FILE
EleanorGunby, who has beenoffered a
scholarshiptostudythe causes of nest
failureinthe estuary,’’ he says.
‘‘She is lookingatthe role of human
disturbance, and also at the impact the
gulls are having.
‘‘She got abroad overview of how the
last nesting season looked, so it willbe
very interesting to see how the bird
count data has changed, in terms of
speciesdropoffaroundthese big
colonies, as we go into the nextnesting
season in spring.’’
■Understandingyourhomeloan
affordability
Understandwhatyou canafford:
That is,the regularrepayment
amount youcan committo, with
some room to breathe.
Create abudget that listsall of
at amonthlyaverage foryour
living costs –and don’tforgetto
include newexpensesyou’llincur
Next, add in anyregularsavings
An inspiring talk over breakfast
North Canterbury’s Mayors have come
away feeling inspired after the latest Big
Brothers Big Sisters breakfast.
Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon and
Hurunui Mayor Marie Black, say they
were inspired by the message from
internationally acclaimed barber and
hair artist Matt Brown, acampaigner
against domestic violence.
They were among the more than 200
people to attend the Big Brothers Big
breakfast in Rangiora last week.
‘‘I know Icould speak for everyone in
the room when Isay it was atruly
inspiring talk,’’ Mr Gordon said.
‘‘Matt is using his own experiences to
help others, particularly men.
‘‘It was avery raw, but hugely
insightful and inspiring talk and I
enjoyed meeting and talking with Matt.’’
Mrs Black said Mr Brown’s message of
‘‘changing the narrative’’ resonated with
her.
Mr Brown said he had forgiven his
own father for abuse when he was child,
because he wanted to be agood father to
‘‘I do it daily for my sake because what
we don’t deal with, we transfer.
‘‘When Ifirst held my child in my
He said family violence was a‘‘we’’
problem which existed across all
communities.
‘‘Monsters are not born, they are
created from years of trauma, systemic
failures, racism, the list goes on.’’
Family violence had cost the taxpayer
$80 billion in the last 10 years, he said.
The police received 111 calls about
family violence every four minutes
during Covid, but many people never
‘‘I’m tired of this narrative for people
What are we doing? What are we doing
people, being inquisitive and asking
them how they really are?’’
Big Brothers mentors were ‘‘super
heroes’’ in connecting with young
people, he said. Mr Brown is the author
Four teams vying for semi finals spots
RUGBY
Kaiapoi came from a015 deficit in the
first 20 minutes, to beat Saracens 3327 in
the latest roundofthe Luisetti Seeds
CombinedCountry rugby competition
playedonSaturday.
The result condensesthe race for asemi
final in the pool, with four teams —
including Kaiapoi and Saracens —
separatedatthe top by only one point.
Ashley had to work hard in the closing
quarter beforeheadingoff Southern 3429,
and Ohoka posted adeserved 4226 win
over West Melton.
GlenmarkCheviot beat long time rival
Southbridge 3824 after leading 265 at half
time, while Oxford broke its horror start to
the season with a4023 win over Lincoln
Rolleston.
Woodend always hadMethven in its
sight, but could not get the break it
desperately wanted, going down3439.
KaiapoivSaracens
Jacob Hurring is ayoung man who does a
huge amountofwork for the Kaiapoi
RugbyClub.
His reward came last Saturday, when, as
the Kaiapoi captain, and having just
playedhis 100th match for the team, he
held aloft the Deans Shield after his team
beat the previously unbeaten Saracens
side 3327 to put the seal on asuccessful
Club day.
The regard in which Hurring is held by
his teammates was apparent at the
aftermatch functionwhen they honoured
him with aparticularly spirited haka after
he was presented with his Centurions’
blazer.
While the matchwas pepperedwith
penalties, it was still an enjoyable
spectacle withboth teams havingperiods
of dominance.
For the first half hour it was all
Saracens who gained the lion’sshare of
possession. CalebPomareEdwards
openedthe scoring with apenalty and lock
Daniel Bateup wasonhandtobenefit
from some quick thinking by the Saracens
halfback, Marty Lockyer.
Then came what wasprobably the try of
the match whenSaracens launched a
counter attack from deep withintheir own
territory.
Almost half the team was involved in
some slickinterpassing, but it was No 8
Proud moment ... Kaiapoi captain Jacob Hurring holds the Deans Shield aloft after having
just played his100th match for the team against Saracens and beating them to secure the
shield.
PHOTO:PETER WILLIAMS
Willie Kerr who gave real impetustothe
movement with astrong diagonal run
before Kerran Jenkins finished off afine
try.
Kaiapoi had barelyfired ashot to this
point but suddenly the team, and in
particular, tighthead prop Zach Andrews,
burst into life.
Within the space of 7minutes he scored
twice with strong runs and Taine Jacobs
Lawson’s conversions closed the gap.
But Saracens was not done. Toby Ashby,
who was particularly impressive on the
left wing, hit the line at pace and almost
scored.Saracens managed to recyclethe
ball and afew phases later Ashby got his
just reward by dotting down in the corner
to allow Saracenstotake adeserved 2014
lead to the break.
But the second half was averydifferent
story. Kaiapoi found its mojo.
Fullback Matty Joyita scored
immediatelyafter the resumption to give
his team alead it never surrendered.
The insertion of lock Connor Smith off
the bench after alengthyinjury break,
helped Kaiapoi to gain amuch more even
share of possession, and as the game went
on the forward pack, with hooker Kafu
Misiuata to the fore, gained the upper
hand over Saracens.
Saracens seemedtoget rattled and
started to make some uncharacteristic
errors.
Late in the matchhooker Jordie Smith
who impressed with afine allround game,
scored atry that gave Saracens abonus
point that could well proveinvaluable. But
with time almost up, Kaiapoiresponded in
the best way possible by surging back on to
attack, andJacobsLawson sealed the deal
by landing his third penaltygoal of the
half.Lance Taylor who had made agood
fist of playing at halfback, had also added
one while JacobsLawson wasinthe
sinbin.
So although Saracens scored 4tries to 3,
in the end it was theimpeccable goalkicking
of JacobsLawsonthat made the
difference. He landed all 6ofhis kicks at
goal. many of the them longrange efforts.
Kaiapoi 33 (Zach Andrews(2), Matty Joyita
tries,Taine JacobsLawson 3conversions,
3penalties, Lance Taylor 1penalty) beat
Saracens 27 (Daniel Bateup, Kerran
Jenkins, Toby Ashby, JordieSmith tries,
Caleb PomareEdwards 2conversions,1
penalty).
GlenmarkCheviot v
Southbridge
GlenmarkCheviotheaded south to
Southbridge, hopingtocontinue the
momentum built from the previous week.
But it was undernoillusions about the
challenge ahead. The match started at a
frantic pace with the opening try coming
in just the third minute.
The GlenmarkCheviot forwards rolled
up their sleeves, knuckleddown and were
rewarded with atry to captain Andrew
Hull.
Southbridgeresponded soon after with
atry of its own. Butonly minutes laterthe
Glenmark forwards were at it again with
Nick Hydebarging overclose to the line.
Both teams then set to their work with
neither side gaining areal stranglehold on
the gameuntil late in the first half.
The forwards were at it again, rewarded
with another try to lock Tom Blyth.
In the last play before half time winger
Matt Earl wasthe benefactor of atry, after
somestrongforward work. Half time score
265 to GlenmarkCheviot.
The secondhalf was acontinuation of
the first with Glenmark’sforwards again
musclingup, only 6minutes, for Ethan
McDuff to finish with atry on the wing.
But as was expectedSouthbridgeteam
wasn’t goingtolie downintheir own
patch. After aperiodofsome solid playit
was rewarded with apenalty try, and
GlenmarkCheviot. ending up with aman
in the bin for 10 minutes.
The pressure continued to be applied
and 10 minutes from full time another
playerwas sent from the field.
Southbridgemanagedtoscramble two
late tries to bring the game close. But a
finaltry to center to MattJensen sealed
the gamefor GlenmarkCheviot to finish
with acomprehensive 38 24 win.
Stand out players for combined were
Ben Anderson, playing his first
competitive gamefor the club in 18
months, while in the backs, Guy Jensen
continues to provehis value.
Pushing boundaries
By JOHN COSGROVE
For more than20years, two
Cheviot artistshave been
challenging eachotherto
pushthe boundaries of
their art, through lifein
North Canterbury.
Through their different
artistic practices, good
friends Roy Masonand Ana
Martineau havecaptured
the beautyofthe landscape
and the people
surrounding their homes.
Roy through his
landscapesofcoastlines,
rivers andmountains,and
Ana through her portraits
of the people on the land
and her intimate snapshots
of life as she sees it.
The friends continue to
challengeeachother
visually every day.
“Even driving here to
Amberley today withRoy, I
spotted awonderful
northwest cloud formation
overhead, the mixture of
colours and shapes
inspired me,” saysAna.
Alifelong lover of art,
Ana has used many
different genres over the
years.
‘‘I am fascinated by the
processofcreativity in all
art forms, manyofmy
paintings are happy
challenges.’’
Despite the fact she finds
it hard to talk to people, she
loves portraitpainting.
‘‘It’s very nervewracking
talking to people, but Ilove
trying to capture their
Creative views ... Cheviot artists and long time friends,
essence in apainting.’’
Ana now lives and works
fromacaravanand says it
gives her the freedom to be
selfsufficient with her
lifestyle.
‘‘Ithas given me the time
and energy to paint
whatevercatchesmyeye.’’
Ron says he alsopainted
fromanearlyage.
‘‘I’m largely selftaught
but Ifind it is always about
the light,how it catchesthe
eye,works with shadows
and creates the amazing
coloursIsee allaround me.
‘‘That is what Ilook for in
ascene where ever Iam
travellingtoo.’’ He isn’t an
easy driving companion for
Ana as he is always asking
her to stopand lookat
things.‘‘I’m always yelling,
‘Stop Iwanttodraw this or
shoot that’,’’ says the keen
photographer.
This month the two
artists feature at the Back
Wall Gallery at the
Hurunui Libraryin
Amberley.
‘‘It’s the best thingthat
has happened here,asit
gives us an exhibition
space,’’ saysRon.
community…
Parking Update
Local businesses have raised concerns with us that a
number ofpeople are regularly moving vehicles from
one place to another every couple of hours in the
same carpark to avoid getting aparking infringement.
Billy Charlton, Environmental Services Manager, says,
“Having avariety of parking options available supports
local businesses and improves access for their
customers. We want to tighten up our parking in key
areas to make sure that we’ve got sufficient spaces
available, and they are being used fairly”.
New signage will be put in place in key carparks
and these parking spaces should only be used for a
maximum of two hours. New signage will be in the
following car parks:
• Kaiapoi Service Centre
• Rangiora Service Centre
• Blake Street Carpark
• Ashley Street Carpark.
Vehicles parked in these car parks for more than two
hours may be issued with aparking infringement by
Council staff. The fine for exceeding the time limit
currently varies between $12–$57 depending on the
length of time.
Parking infringements can be issued for:
• Parking in excess of atime limit orincontravention
of abylaw
• Parking in prohibited areas –broken yellow lines,
loading zones etc
• Inconsiderate parking or any other parking offences
designated bystatute
• Failing to display acurrent licence label
• Failing to display currentevidence of vehicle inspection.
BNZ Corner Plans Unveiled
Waimakariri District Council is pleased toannounce
it has settled on the sale of the vacant commercial
Thepurchase was negotiatedbyaCouncil SelectionPanel
chairedbyMayor Dan Gordon (other membersDeputy
Mayor Neville Atkinson,CrJoanWard and Rangiora-
into the vision of the Rangiora Town Centre Strategy.
With large traffic flow from both streets, the sites
have ahigh profile and provide an entry point to
the primary pedestrian area of the High Street of
Rangiora –Waimakariri’s largest town.
Mayor Dan Gordon says this is agreat outcome for
ahigh-profile piece of land, an important bookend
to Rangiora Town Centre and will further add to the
vibrancy of Rangiora.
“We are thrilled to be working alongside developers
and shaping the ongoing growth and development
of Rangiora –especially for significant sites like our
town entrances.
“Residents oen tell us one of the things they value
the most about living in Waimakariri is the unique
character of our townships and we are really pleased
that this project will continue to build on Rangiora’s
character, look and feel.”
Council Property Manager Rob Hawthorne says from
the Council’s perspective aquality development on
these two properties is very important.
“A very attractive two-story development is proposed,
that will complement the town centre and bring some
quality retail and business offerings to Rangiora,”
Hawthorne says.
The site has been purchased by Cornershop
Investments (cornershop.space) which is made up
of Eileen and Murray Irvine, Bridget Hope and Gabe
we have completed inthe centre of the town and are
