PlyWood Trail contract comes
in higher than anticipated
BY TOM LAWRENCE
Staff writer
LE MARS — After a brief
pause for sticker shock when
bids came in 20 percent over
the estimate, work on the next
phase of the PlyWood Trail will
commence.
The Le Mars City Council
approved a $2,307,862.58 contract
with Godbersen-Smith of
Ida Grove during its Tuesday,
May 16 meeting. The only
other bid was $2,355,961.15
from RP Constructors, LLC of
North Sioux City. Both were
well above the $1.93 million
estimate.
The bids were opened on
April 18 and discussed during
PlyWood Trail Executive Board
meetings on April 25 and May
2. The bid was to be awarded
during the May 2 City Council
meeting but it was pushed back
for two weeks.
Cody Forch, a McClure
Engineering team leader, said
the PlyWood Trail board
discussed ways to meet the
higher-than-expected cost.
Forch said after examining all
the bid specifications, it was
determined that the cost of a
retaining wall was more than
$400,000 higher than anticipated.
“We were trying to figure out
an avenue to fund the project,
find a way to bridge the overage,”
he told The Le Mars Sentinel.
In the end, the money was
located.
City Administrator Jason
Vacura said the city needed to
act within 30 days to ensure the
grant money was still accessible,
and May 18 was the deadline.
After a short presentation from
Forch and a brief discussion, the
council voted 5-0 to approve
the contract.
Forch said it may prove to
be beneficial that Godbersen-Smith
is working on Phase
1A of the project, which began
in late 2022. Work on Phase 1B
is set to begin soon, with a late
budget amendment
Lifestyles Editor
LE MARS — The Le Mars
Community School District’s
Board of Education opened its
Monday, May 9, meeting with
a public hearing concerning
amending the 2022-23 budget.
Superintendent Dr. Steve
Webner said for most school
districts, a budget amendment
is an annual occurrence.
“We do it many years as
well,” he said.
“By Iowa law, it states that
schools must annually amend
their budget if there is any
function code where we will be
spending more than what we
stated in the original budget,”
he told the board.
The 2022-23 school year
budget was approved in April
2022.
There are three areas where
amendments have to be made,
according to Webner.
The first was for Total Support
Services, which was budgeted
at $7,664,672.
Webner recommended
an amendment increase of
$100,000, due to property
insurance premiums increased
in the past year.
For Noninstructional Programs,
it was recommended to
increase the $1,033,174 budget
by $250,000. That increase is
needed due to an increase in
food costs for the lunch program,
he said.
In the Total Other Expenditures
category, a $250,000
increase was recommended.
“This is for facility projects,”
Webner said. “The timing of
bills has everything to do with
this. The fiscal year ends June
30, and for projects such as the
high school ventilation project
and middle renovation project,
we may not get those bills
until the following fiscal year.
Because of that, the costs are
higher than you budgeted for.”
The three category increases
brings the total amendment
increase to $600,000.
“This is not something to
sweat, we have the funds,”
Webner said. “It’s an accounting
thing where you have to
move money from one line to
another to make sure you have
enough on those lines.
“The other thing, this is
no increase in taxes. This is
money from miscellaneous
income or just funds that we
Supervisors move to join Home Base Iowa program to support veterans
BY TOM LAWRENCE
Staff writer
LE MARS — Plymouth
County is closer to joining the
Home Base Iowa program,
which would help attract veterans
to Plymouth County and
assist them in finding jobs and
homes.
The Plymouth County
Board of Supervisors approved
a resolution to join HBI during
its Tuesday, May 16, meeting.
That came two weeks after
Jathan Chicoine, Home Base
Iowa’s program manager,
asked the Board of Supervisors
to join. He said having the
county join the public-private
partnership was just one of
the steps needed to make it a
success.
It also needs local business
support, he said.
That could include discounts
for veterans and signing
bonuses for new employees
who are veterans and possibly
housing incentives, which can
match the funds from the HBI
program.
The plan also calls for the
county to erect Home Base
Iowa signs at well-traveled
sites. There is a modest cost
associated with that.
The last step is the most
enjoyable one, Chicoine said
— holding a dedication ceremony.
A local point person
would share the date and time
with the governor’s office, who
is very supportive of the program.
Auditor Stacey Feldman said
it’s a worthwhile idea but there
has to be a follow-up. Approving
a resolution and joining the
organization means nothing
without the necessary next
steps being taken, Feldman
said.
Plymouth County Veterans
Affairs Director Jim Jones was
pleased the supervisors voted
to join HBI.
“I think it’s one more tool
in our toolbox to help and
encourage veterans,” Jones
told The Le Mars Sentinel. “I
think Plymouth County is a
great place to live.”
As a veteran who served
30 years in the Navy, he said
assisting other veterans is both
his job and a personal priority.
Jones said he will be involved
in this effort as it takes shape
and a structure is put in place.
Signs announcing the county’s
membership in the organization
will be put up, he said.
The most recent survey
showed there were 1,907 veterans
now living in Plymouth
County, Jones said.
Chicoine, who said it was
“outstanding” that the supervisors
approved the resolution,
said the other steps must be
completed to add Plymouth
County to the list of Home
Base Iowa counties.
“They’re not officially a
Home Base Iowa community,”
he told The Le Mars Sentinel
on Thursday. “I think it will be
a remarkable accomplishment
“We’re making real
start date set for June 19. It’s
expected to be completed in
75 working days.
The PlyWood Trail will be
a concrete path, primarily 10
feet wide, with some sections
8 feet wide. It was designed
for bicycle traffic, as well as
pedestrian use.
A bridge north of Merrill
on the west side of Highway
75 has been completed and
Forch said it’s an impressive
sight. Paving work will continue
this spring and summer.
The 18.5-mile-long Ply-
Wood Trail — named for
Plymouth and Woodbury
counties — will be part of
the Siouxland Regional Trail
System. It was awarded $7
million to develop five trail
projects and connect the
communities of Sioux City,
Le Mars, Hinton, Merrill, and
Sergeant Bluff with more than
100 miles of continuous trail
projects in the area including
the three segments of
PlyWood Trail, the 4.3-mile
Loess Hills Scenic Trail, and
the Cone Mountain Bike
Park.
The PlyWood Trail will
cost an estimated $23 million
when it is completed, Forch
said.
The first two sections,
Phases 1A and 1B, run from
Merrill to Le Mars. They will
cover about 3 miles and cost
a total of $3.8 million.
Hinton to Merrill is
Phase 2, but that is currently
unplanned, Forch said, with
Iowa DOT seeking a sponsoring
entity, such as Le Mars is
for Phases 1A and 1B and
Sioux City is for Phase 3.
The segment of the trail
from Sioux City to Hinton
is Phase 3. It is in the design
phase, Forch said, and bids
will be let in the spring of
2024 with construction set
for 2024-25.
When will it all be done?
Forch said that’s still up in
the air.
“Phase Two is going to be
the big unknown,” he said.
While the city of Le Mars
is serving as the contracting
authority for Phases 1A and
1B, no public dollars are
being spent. The project will
be paid for with funds from
a Destination Iowa grant,
the Le Mars Area Betterment
Foundation, money raised
by the Plywood Trail Foundation,
and a federal recreational
grant.
Councilman Clark Goodchild
said it’s important for
people to realize how this is
being paid for, and not think
it is coming out of their pockets.
“Whether you like it or
hate it, it’s private funds
that are funding that, not
house taxes, property taxes,”
Goodchild said. “Just a gentle
reminder.”
The council also approved
an agreement with McClure
Engineering for $194,300 for
work on the project. The city
will be reimbursed by the
same group of entities as with
the construction work.
education and/or continued
service; and service members
are valued in communities
which are welcoming,
affordable, safe and family-friendly.”
Home Base Iowa recruits
members of the armed forces
as they prepare to leave the
ranks, urging them to settle
in Iowa. HBI also seeks
to find jobs for them, since
many are highly trained and
skilled and can fill open jobs
in the Hawkeye State. By
becoming a Home Base Iowa
Community county, town or
city, it signals support for the
organization.
There are more than
200,000 veterans living in
Iowa and HBI wants to add
to their ranks. More than
2,400 businesses statewide
have pledged to hire over
16,000 veterans, and more
than 120 communities and
at least 30 colleges and universities
are partners.
It’s a formality, a compliance
The board unanimously
approved the amendment as
presented, and directed the
administration to notify the
appropriate county and state
officials.
The board had a number of
action items on the agenda for
the meeting.
The board consided bids for
milk and bread for the 2023-24
school year.
Webner said the school
district received only one bid
for bread, after sending bid
requests to three companies:
Casey’s, Hy-Vee and Sunkist.
Casey’s was the lone bidder
at $45,755.
“We could try and rebid it,
but it won’t make a difference.
We’re just not getting bids on
these,” Webner said.
When asked about how the
bid compared to last year, Webner
indicated it was quite a bit
higher, “It’s around $19,000
more than last year. It’s part
SRTS introduces partnership to
encourage shared rides for commuters
SIOUX CITY – As businesses
in the area continue to grow
and commute costs continue
to increase, Siouxland Regional
Transit System (SRTS) is
creating improvements to the
transit system to attract workers
to the area while reducing
expenses for commuters. In
partnership with Commute
with Enterprise, Siouxland
Regional Transit System is
helping to continue to provide
an innovative and sustainable
shared mobility option: vanpooling.
The Enterprise Commute
program, established many
years ago, is a coordinated vanpool
program available to people
who live inside or outside
of the service areas of Siouxland
Regional Transit System
and wish to access jobs in the
were provided a 6.5-horsepower
engine from Harbor Freight
Tools in Sioux City.
NCC heavy equipment
instructor Adam Obbink constructed
a banked track with
a pit area with the help from
some of his students.
The community college also
helped cover engine costs to
increase participation.
The rules for the contest
change each year. For example,
this year’s winner was determined
by the most laps completed
in one hour, and teams
had to switch drivers in the pits
every 15 minutes. If a go-kart
broke down, teams could get
their kart to the pit area and
make the necessary repairs to
amendment,” he said.
The board then moved to the
milk bids.
The district sent out four
requests for bids: Hiland Dairy,
Kemps, Anderson-Erickson
and Prairie Farm Dairy, and
received two back.
Bids came from Kemps
Dairy and Prairie Farms.
“Hiland sent a letter back
stating their route will not
allow them to service the way
they would need to, so they did
not submit,” Webner told the
board.
The Prairie Farms bid came
in at $41,085 and the Kemps
bid came in at $42,555, a difference
of $1,470.
“Now, the difficult part with
this is Kemps are 100 yards
from us, but by law, when you
put out bids like this, the school
board must approve the lowest
responsible bidder,” Webner
said.
“If you do not, and you do
not have a good legal reason
why, then the board would be
breaking the law. Right now,
we have no reason to believe
area. The program coordinates
participants who indicate their
interest through various channels
such as at their jobsite or
via an online portal. The program
then matches riders who
have similar work shifts in similar
areas and who are interested
in riding together. Once four
or more people are matched,
a Commute with Enterprise
representative will contact the
group to begin working out
the details. Commute with
Enterprise then provides a 7-15
passenger vehicle, insurance,
maintenance, and ongoing
support. Each vanpool is customized
to the specific needs
of its four or more vanpoolers.
The new partnership with
Enterprise allows Siouxland
Regional Transit System to
support the vanpool program
that they (Prairie Farms) are
not a responsible bidder. We
have had no issues with them.
They’ve done a fine job. By
law, the board must approve
the lowest responsible bidder,
which is Prairie Farms,” Webner
said.
While board members said
they did not feel good about it,
Webner said, “It’s close but it’s
a competitive bid for a reason.”
Webner recommended the
board approve the bread bid
from Casey’s and the milk bid
from Prairie Farms. The board
unanimously approved the bids
as presented.
The board also considered
a pay increase for the Le Mars
Community School District
Board Secretary Lisa Boehm.
She is in a non-contracted position
but does get paid, Webner
said. “She does an outstanding
job.”
“Historically, she will get
a bump, and a few years later
when the need arises, or we
feel we need to, we bump her
up again,” he said. The last
raise was approved in 2017, he
and employment needs of local
businesses in our community.
The vanpool program will be
partially subsidized by Siouxland
Regional Transit System
using local, state, and federal
grant funds. The remaining
cost is split among the employer
and/or participants, with
each vanpool rider paying a set
fee per month. Enterprise will
provide coordination services
and technology, vehicles, liability
insurance, scheduled vehicle
maintenance, and 24-hour
roadside assistance, as well as
best practices for cleaning and
Complete Clean Starter Kits for
new Commuters.
Participants can choose a
qualifying vanpool vehicle
from Enterprise’s selection
of makes and models that
includes crossovers, SUVs,
return to the track.
To participate, each student
provided a waiver signed
by their parents and were
required to wear helmets and
proper personal protective
equipment while operating
their machines.
All the judges for the Junkyard
Wars competition are
career and technical education
instructors, such as
Shane Peterson from West
Lyon, which had five teams in
the field, including an all-girls
team consisting of juniors
Shaylyn Van Veldhuizen,
Paige Larsen and Jana Ter Wee
and sophomore Courteney
LaFrenz.
While judges want the participants
to have fun with the
race, Peterson said they do
their best to make sure it is a
safe experience.
“We do have strict rules
about bumping or ramming,
and if students are purposely
hitting each other, they are disqualified,”
he said.
Awards were given to the
top three teams. The winning
team from MMCRU consisted
of senior Owen Alesch and
freshmen Evan Johnson, Gage
Johnson and Brandon Dreckman.
OABCIG took second
place while West Lyon ended
in third place.
The award for “Best Engineered”
went to the team from
South O’Brien.
added.
Webner recommended the
board give her a $700 increase
for the coming year.
“And then so we don’t have
to do these bumps every few
years, I recommend to then
each year give her the same
base increase as the support
staff gets,” he said.
That means for the coming
school year, she will receive
$5,700 for the year.
“She does a great job and we
need to keep her around,” he
said.
High School Principal Dr.
Mark Iverson presented the
board with the list of students
for graduation for the 2022-23
school year.
There were 131 students who
were approved to receive their
diplomas on May 21 during
the 3 p.m. commencement
ceremony.
Iverson said there were 30
students who graduated from
the Alternative High School
this year. Their graduation
ceremony was held May 17 in
the middle school auditorium.
minivans, and large passenger
to upgrade their vehicles with
optional high-end features
such as satellite radio and
Consumer Connection: Medicaid unwinding and looking for health insurance
BY SONYA SELLMEYER
Consumer Advocacy Officer for
the Iowa Insurance Division
DES MOINES — The
COVID-19 Public Health Emergency
allowed the Iowa Department
of Health and Human Services
to grant continual coverage
for Medicaid and Children’s
Health Insurance Program
(CHIP), also known as Hawki,
enrollees.
Beginning April 1, 2023, Iowa
Medicaid resumed reviewing
member eligibility. The process
is called renewal, or the unwind
of continuous coverage that
was required during the Public
Health Emergency. Some Medicaid
members have already
received their renewal letters and
responded to requests to verify
contact information from Iowa
Medicaid and/or from Iowa’s
managed care organizations.
During the renewal process,
letters will be sent to different
groups of members whose
scheduled renewal date is
coming up. This will continue
through March 2024. If you
have gotten a letter from Medicaid,
check the letter for the current
coverage status, and return
any requested information.
If you no longer qualify for
Medicaid/Hawki, there are
healthcare options available:
If you are under 26 years of
age, see about health insurance
coverage under a parent’s policy.
Inquire with your employer
or spouse’s employer about
options for health insurance.
Understand the type of policy
offered, its benefits, and the premiums.
You must request coverage
from your employer within
60 days from the date you lose
Medicaid eligibility.
If the employment coverage is
not affordable, consider a Health
Insurance Marketplace plan on
Healthcare.gov. For those losing
Medicaid eligibility, there will be
a special enrollment period from
March 31, 2023 to July 31, 2024.
“Marketplace” plans may offer
a subsidy in the form of a tax
credit that lowers your monthly
premium and cost-sharing
reductions that will lower your
deductible and copays. Ninety
percent of all Iowans receive
significant monthly subsidies
and the average monthly premium
in 2023 for Iowans is $105.
Marketplace plans cover doctor
visits, urgent care, hospital visits,
and prescription drugs.
To apply for a Marketplace
policy, visit Healthcare.gov as
early as 60 days before your
coverage ends, and pick the
option regarding lost Medicaid
or CHIP eligibility. After you
apply, compare insurance plans
before making a decision. Look
at the network to ensure the plan
has in-network coverage that
includes your doctors. Also,
review the prescription drug
coverage to make sure your prescriptions
are covered. You will
have 60 days after submitting
your application to enroll in a
plan, and coverage will start the
first day of the month after the
plan is selected.
During this period of uncertainty,
scammers will be lurking.
If you are considering purchasing
an ACA- compliant plan,
check to ensure that the plan
includes all of the ten essential
health benefits and does not
have annual or lifetime coverage
maximums. Use a navigator
or licensed insurance agent
to assist. Beware of unsolicited
phone calls and mailings that
appear to be from Medicaid
or Healthcare.gov, the official
Marketplace website. Advertisements
attempting to sell you
health insurance using a politician’s
face are not legitimate
healthcare plans. Don’t answer
your phone to unknown numbers,
or give out your personal
information like bank account
numbers, social security, Medicare
numbers, etc. Consider the
source, always go to the trusted
website, and don’t click on links
in emails or texts.
You may also consider other
options such as health coverage
through a health benefit plan
sponsored by a non-profit agricultural
organization or through
short-term limited duration
plans. The Iowa Insurance Division
has authorized the following
companies to sell short-term
limited duration plans for up to
364 days. No other carriers are
authorized to sell short-term
limited duration plans.
Contact the Iowa Insurance
Division at 877-955-1212 if you
need assistance determining
your healthcare needs.
End of Continuous
Enrollment and Actions
for Medicare, or
Medicare-eligible, Persons
If you are on Medicare (or are
Medicare eligible) your benefits
may also change during the redetermination
process that is currently
underway. You may be
removed from Medicaid, or your
level of assistance may change.
Depending on your situation
you may have several actions to
take including:
• Ensuring you have a prescription
drug plan.
• Ensuring your prescription
drug plan covers all your drugs.
• Finding additional coverage
through a Medicare Supplement
or Medicare Advantage Plan. If
you are 65 or older, and lost your
Medicare Supplement Open
Enrollment opportunity because
you continued your Medicaid
benefits due to the Pandemic,
you will have a guaranteed
issue to purchase a Medicare
supplement. This opportunity
will end 63 days from the date
of the change in your Medicaid
benefits.
If Medicaid does make a
change to your benefits, you
can contact the Iowa Insurance
Division’s SHIIP/SMP Program
to find free Medicare counseling
services near you. SHIIP/SMP
can be reached at 1-800-351-
4664 or online at shiip.iowa.gov.
Iowa DOT begins traffic information
collection in Northwest Iowa
AMES — Investing your
tax dollars wisely to make
lives better through transportation
requires a great
deal of data to inform the
best possible decisions. Each
year the Iowa Department of
Transportation canvases a
specific quadrant of the state
to collect information on
the number of cars, trucks,
and other vehicles using the
state, county, and city roadways.
Using this data, we can
better predict traffic volume
and weight trends, allowing
us to plan improvements
that will give you the most
benefit for each dollar spent.
This year’s efforts are
concentrated in Northwest
Iowa, but occasionally
crews will work elsewhere
in the state. You may see
employees in DOT-marked
vehicles sitting at various
locations counting the
morning, noon, and evening
traffic. They count
and classify vehicles, record
vehicle turning movements,
and gather other data necessary
to assist in planning
the future of Iowa’s roadway
system.
Other employees will be
placing and checking portable
traffic recorders in the
same general areas where
you may notice a black rubber
tube running across the
road. When the recorders
are set, they usually record
data for one or two days and
Congratulations
LCSD Foundation 2023
are checked periodically.
Employees responsible for
the recorders work various
shifts, including hours outside
of a traditional business
day.
Additional statewide work
scheduled for this summer
includes the installation,
upgrading, and maintenance
of permanent traffic
recorders and weigh-in-motion
equipment at continuous
count station locations.
While this work is going
on, you can expect to see
Iowa DOT employees and
vehicles in your communities
all hours of the day. All
of this work is critical to the
future of the state’s transportation
system.
Yard and Garden: Planting sweet corn FAQs
AMES — Sweet corn
fresh from the garden
makes a tasty addition
to a summer picnic, but
gardeners need to plant
sweet corn soon to enjoy
this tasty treat throughout
the summer. In this article,
horticulturists with Iowa
State University Extension
and Outreach offer tips for
selecting the best cultivars
and planting sweet corn.
What are the differences
between the various types
of sweet corn?
There are five main
types of sweet corn available
to home gardeners.
These types vary in sugar
content, texture, length of
harvest period, storage life,
seed vigor and germination
requirements. The
five main types of sweet
corn are standard sugary
(su), sugary enhanced (se),
supersweets (sh2), synergistic
(syn) and augmented
supersweets (shA or aug).
Within each of these major
types are cultivars that will
ripen in the early, mid and
late seasons.
Standard sugary (su)
cultivars have been grown
for many years. These cultivars
have the traditional
sweet corn flavor and texture,
but don’t store well
and are only of the best
quality within the first
day after harvest, because
sugars quickly convert to
starch after harvest.
Sugary enhanced (se)
cultivars contain the sugary
enhanced gene that
produces ears with sweet,
tender kernels. Compared
to su cultivars, sugar levels
of se types are higher and
the storage life is 1 to 2 days
longer.
Supersweet (sh2) cultivars
contain the shrunken-2
gene. These cultivars
have very high sugar levels,
and convert sugar to starch
slowly, allowing for a longer
harvest period and a
storage life for up to one
week with refrigeration.
The seedcoats on kernels
are rather thick, giving the
corn a firmer, crunchy texture.
Synergistic (syn) sweet
corn cultivars possess su, se
and sh2 genes. Synergistic
cultivars are sweet, creamy
and tender. Augmented
supersweets (shA or aug)
are an improved type of
supersweet cultivars as they
also contain the se gene;
therefore, they are also
sweet and tender. Both syn
and shA cultivars have an
excellent storage life.
When should I plant
sweet corn?
Many gardeners want to
plant sweet corn as early
as possible to get an early
summer harvest. However,
when planted too early in
the season, soil temperatures
can be too low to
promote good, consistent
germination, increasing the
risk of seed rot in cold, wet
soil. Most seeds are treated
to help prevent rot and will
be dyed pink to indicate
that they’ve been treated.
Some types of sweet
corn more readily germinate
and grow in colder soil
temperatures and can be
planted earlier than others.
Standard sweet corn (su)
cultivars can be planted in
late April in central Iowa
(a little earlier in southern
Iowa and a little later
in northern Iowa). It is
recommended that sugar
enhanced (se) and synergistic
(syn) cultivars be
planted one week later than
standard sweet corn cultivars.
In general, supersweet
(sh2) and augmented
supersweets (shA/aug) cultivars
are the least tolerant
of cold soil temperatures.
As a result, these cultivars
should be planted later
than other types (mid-May
in central Iowa).
For a continuous supply
of sweet corn, plant
early, mid-season and late
cultivars. Alternatively,
the same cultivar can be
planted in blocks every two
weeks. The last practical
planting date for early cultivars
is July 1.
Magana Valdovinos, Le Mars,
What is the correct way
to plant sweet corn in the
home garden?
Plant only fresh seeds,
as planting old seeds will
likely result in poor germination
and irregular plant
stands. Sweet corn performs
best in full sun and
fertile, well-drained soils
with a pH between 6.0 and
6.5. Sow seed at a depth
of 1 inch in heavy soils. In
light sandy soils, the planting
depth can be 2 inches.
Space seeds 8 to 12 inches
apart in rows 2½ to 3 feet
apart. Sweet corn may also
be planted in “hills.” Sow
4 to 5 seeds per hill with
approximately 3 inches
between seeds. Hills should
be spaced 2½ feet apart
with 2½ to 3 feet between
rows.
Sweet corn requires high
levels of nitrogen and moderate
amounts of phosphorus
and potassium to grow
well. Prior to planting,
incorporate 2 to 3 pounds
of fertilizer per 100 square
feet by spreading an allpurpose
fertilizer, such as
10-10-10, uniformly over
the area and incorporating
it into the top 3-4 inches
of soil.
How much sweet corn
should I plant?
Plants typically produce
one good ear of corn per
stalk and at least one secondary
ear that is usually
smaller and lower in
quality. When good management
practices are
applied, such as adequate
fertilization and applying
approximately 1 inch of
water (either from rainfall
or irrigation) per week
and controlling weeds, the
expected yield should be 11
to 13 ears per 10-foot row.
Can sweet corn be planted
near popcorn or field
corn in the garden?
Sweet corn should be
isolated from popcorn
and field corn to prevent
cross-pollination, since the
quality of sweet corn will
be lowered if it’s cross-pollinated
by other types of
corn. For example, sweet
corn pollinated by popcorn
will be tough and starchy.
Different types of sweet
corn should also be isolated
from each other to prevent
cross-pollination, which
can lower the quality of the
sweet corn. In particular,
supersweet and augmented
supersweet cultivars
should be isolated from
standard, sugary enhanced
and synergistic sweet corn
types. Additionally, isolate
sugary enhanced cultivars
from standard and synergistic
cultivars.
Furthermore, cross pollination
from different
colors of sweet corn can
decrease color purity in the
kernels. White kernel cultivars
will develop yellow
kernels if pollinated by yellow
or bi-color corn, and
pollen from yellow corn
will lead to extra yellow
kernels in bi-color cultivars.
Pollen from white
corn will not affect yellow
or bi-color cultivars.
Isolation can be achieved
by planting different types
at least 250 feet apart; however,
this is not a practical
option for most home
gardeners due to limited
space. Another option is to
stagger planting dates or
select cultivars that mature
at different times. A minimum
of 14 days should
separate the tasseling time
of different corn types.
LIGHTER SIDE
Ask Annie
Baby Blues
Between Friends
by Kirkman
by Sandra Bell-Lundy
Dear Annie: I suspect my
son may be gay. He is a gorgeous,
smart, successful young
man in his mid-20s, who has
really never shown interest in
girls. I am perfectly fine with
him being gay, and I hope he
would realize that. I wish he
would just tell me if that was
the case. I’m really not sure
if he is because he seems very
masculine. But so did Rock
Hudson.
I would love your gay readers’
opinions. Do they wish
their parents would have
brought up the subject or just
let them come out when they
were ready? Is there a good way
to ease into the topic? I would
hate for him to feel the need to
hide it from me for whatever
reason. Maybe I’ve said stupid
gay remarks in the past?
(“Oh, that’s so gay,” or whatever.)
I might have, but I can’t
remember specifically. I am
very ashamed of myself if I did.
Is that the reason he feels he
can’t open up to me? Or maybe
I’m just totally wrong about
everything? Is it normal for a
man in his mid-20s to show no
interest in girls and not be gay?
I feel like I have a lot to learn!
-- Loving Mom
Dear Loving Mom: As more
people have come out of the
closet as gay, you should know
that you are not alone in asking
these questions. I welcome my
readers to write in with suggestions
for this mother and
answers to her questions.
SOCIALIZING AT THE SEAFOOD COUNTER
ANNIE LANE
Dear Annie: I own a seafood
retail business, and we
have a customer every Sunday
who is hearing impaired and
a little slow at the same time.
She is very nice and spends a
good amount of money every
week. Our issue is that we are
very busy on Sundays with long
lines, and she will take up 15 to
20 minutes of one of my worker’s
time while other people are
in line behind her.
After she finally chooses
what she wants, she will then
stand and start talking about
other topics. We have tried asking
the next customer in line
what we can help them with,
but she will still stand there and
continue to talk while being
in the way. We don’t want to
hurt her feelings, but other
customers behind her get agitated
waiting for her and don’t
understand that she is a little
slow.
Our employees have tried
telling her that they have to
help the next customer, but
that doesn’t work either. Any
suggestions on how to possibly
rectify the situation? -- Confused
on What to Do
Dear Confused: This is a
tough one. Since this happens
every week, you have time to
experiment and come up with
a game plan. For starters, you
might think about assigning
one employee to come around
from behind the counter and
gently lead her away from the
line. The employee can have a
short conversation, make her
feel special and thank her for
buying the seafood.
If that doesn’t work, you
might consider having a coffee
with her and explaining
the problem from your perspective,
all the while telling
her how much you like her and
appreciate her business. She is
lonely and will look to you as a
friend, and, hopefully, be more
sensitive of the other customers.
Another approach would
be to put up balloons and a
welcome sign one week, letting
her know how important she
is, and giving you permission
to be firm in moving her out of
the other customers’ way.
Fifita of Le Mars, Akron-Westfield’s Blowe win state titles
By Allen Hamil
Sports Editor
Editor’s note — Results are
through Friday morning’s session.
Check out Wednesday’s Sentinel
for the rest of the results from the
state track meet.
DES MOINES — Plymouth
County’s athletes had a good
start to the state track and field
meet, including a pair of individuals
winning state titles.
Fifita wins high jump
Northwest Iowa had a stacked
set of athletes in the Class 3A
boys high jump. Sione Fifita
ended up taking third place at
the state qualifying meet, but his
jump was the third best entering
the state field. This time, Fifita
was able to beat out his fellow
competitors from this side of
the state, as well as the rest of the
state field, to bring home a title.
Fifita cleared 5-11, 6-01 and 6-03
all on the first attempt at those
heights. He reached 6-05 on his
second try and 6-06 on his first
attempt. All three of his attempts
to match his personal best 6-07
came up short as he ended at
6-06.
MOC-Floyd Valley’s Jesse
Van Kalsbeek, who won the
state qualifying meet with a
6-07 mark, ended up matching
Fifita’s 6-06 mark at state. Van
Kalsbeek needed one additional
attempt throughout the event,
giving Fifita the tiebreaker for
the state title. Fifita joins Judd
McDougal, who won the Class
A high jump title in 1953 with a
jump of 5-09.25, as state champions
for Le Mars in the event.
The other two to advance to
state from the state qualifying
meet at Orange City tied for the
third place spot, Jaron Bleeker of
Bishop Heelan and Dylan Stecker
of Spirit Lake, both at 6-03.
Fifita also ran in two prelims
on Thursday, but did not
advance to the finals in either
event. In the 200 event, Fifita ran
a time of 22.72 which was 13th.
The last time to advance to finals
was 22.49.
Fifita ran a time of 11.38 in the
100 prelims which was 15th. The
last time to advance to the finals
in that event was 11.10.
Blowe brings home championships
Akron-Westfield’s Ian Blowe
brought home a state title in the
Class 1A shot put on Thursday.
Blowe’s first throw of 52-06.50
was the best through the first
three throws as he advanced to
the finals. On his fifth overall
throw, he was able to reach his
best mark of the day at 55-11.50
which was enough to win the
state title as the next-best distance
in the field was a 53-05.75 from
Le Mars Community’s Sione Fifita clears the bar in the high jump competition at the state
meet on Thursday. He finished at 6-06 and brought home the Class 3A state title.
Wapello’s Ryan McDonough.
Blowe had finished fourth in the
event last year.
On Friday, Blowe added a
second title in the 1A discus.
He won the event with a toss of
161-08 to finish exactly one foot
in front of runner-up Koleson
Evans of West Harrison. Blowe
had the best distance through
the first three throws of 153-07
to advance to the finals. On his
fifth overall attempt, he got the
winning distance, overtaking
Evans who had surpassed him
on the first throw of finals.
Blowe finished third in the
event last year.
Blowe becomes the first
Akron-Westfield individual to
earn a state title. Akron had four
individual champions before
joining Westfield. That included
Dick Root, who won the Class
B discus in back-to-back years
in 1956 (138-09.375) and 1957
(134-04).
Events reach finals
Several Plymouth County
events advanced to Saturday’s
finals.
The Remsen St. Mary’s girls
shuttle hurdle relay started off
state meet Thursday morning
by advancing to the finals. The
group of Halle Galles, Mya Bunkers,
Whitney Jensen and Claire
Schroeder had the third fastest
prelim time in the 1A field at
1:08.58.
The Le Mars Community
girls shuttle hurdle team capped
off Day 1 by advancing. The
Bonderson advanced to the
finals in both of his sprint events.
He finished with the sixth-fastest
time of 22.50 in the 200. In half
the distance in the 100 meter
dash, he finished in half the time
at 11.25 to advance to the finals
with the fifth-fastest time.
Claire Schroeder advanced to
the finals of the 100 hurdles with
the fifth-fastest time of 15.48.
The Gehlen Catholic boys
4x400 team advanced to the
finals with a time of 3:28.37
from Chance Kallsen, Ryan
Augustine, Ashton Budden and
Keaten Bonderson. They had the
third-fastest prelim time.
Earning points
Several events finished in the
top eight to score points for their
respective teams.
Cole McCarty of Gehlen
ended seventh in the 1A long
jump with a 20-05 distance.
The top 11 all finished past 20
feet, but only two eclipsed 21
feet. Cam Huffington of Winfield-Mount
Union won with a
jump of 21-08. Newell-Fonda’s
Carter Sievers was runner-up at
21-03.75.
In the Class 2A girls shot put,
Hinton’s Lauren Kounkel and
KP-WC’s Allie Schweitzberger
finished back-to-back in the fifth
and sixth place spots. Kounkel
ended with a distance of 38-11,
just in front of Schweitzberger’s
38-09.25. The event had a strong
northwest Iowa flavor as West
Lyon, Sheldon and Estherville-
Lincoln Central individuals
placed in the top three spots.
Jana Ter Wee of West Lyon won
with a distance of 42-05, a foot
Grady.
Hinton’s Bailey Boeve finished
fifth in the 2A long jump.
She reached 17-01.50 on her best
17-10 distance.
Hinton’s 4x800 team finished
seventh to add an additional two
points to their team score. The
Blackhawks had the fastest time
in their heat by a wide margin,
finishing in 9:50.37 to beat the
next-best time by 23 seconds.
The time from the group of
Gabbie Friessen, Ava Lang, Kaci
Allen and Kadence Peters ended
up holding up for seventh after
the fast heat. Van Meter won the
state title with a time of 9:34.46.
On Friday morning, Gehlen’s
Miyah Whitehead competed in
the 1A discus. She hit 113-00
Pekin’s Anna Hadley won with
a toss of 134-10.
The Gehlen boys scored
points later on Friday morning
in the 4x200. Their team of Kale
Pearson, Aiden Spangler, Connor
Kraft and Keaten Bonderson
took fourth in 1:31.63. Lawton-
Bronson won with a state meet
the old 1A record of 1:29.62 set
by Panorama in 1997.
MMCRU’s Mitchell Schnepf
finished eighth in the discus
event which conference foe
Blowe won. Schnepf had a best
throw of 139-02.
Other events
Several other events competed
but did not make the top eight to
either qualify for finals or score
points.
MMCRU’s Kaden Galles was
11th in the 1A 3200 race with a
time of 9:55.71.
Barron reached 15-10.25. She
entered the field seeded 22nd.
In the boys 4x800, Gehlen
Chance Kallsen was 13th for
the Jays in the 400 meter dash
with a time of 51.57. A state meet
record was broken in the event
as Mount Ayr’s Ryce Reynolds
finished in 48.21. He was under
the 48.32 Class 1A meet record
which had been in place since
2007 when Jordan Cornilsen of
Preston-East Central ran.
The Gehlen boys shuttle
hurdle team came up short of
advancing from the prelims. The
group of Cole McCarty, Brandon
Gengler, Ethan Nuebel and
Jaxten Kramer finished 20th in
1:04.75. A state meet record was
also broken in that event. Lisbon,
who held the previous 1A record
of 1:00.20 set in 2021, broke their
own record with a 59.96 time in
the prelims. Now all four classes
have sub-1 minute record times
time of 12:07.61.
In the boys 200, Hinton’s
Daniel Blackwell ended 23rd in
a time of 23.71. A time of 22.75
was the last to qualify for the
finals.
Maya Hogrefe of Le Mars finished
22nd in the 400 dash with a
time of 1:03.96. She was the only
freshman in the 3A field in that
event. Hogrefe also competed in
the high jump. She did not clear
the opening height of 4-10.
In the boys high jump, Lucas
Braun of MMCRU finished just
outside the top eight. He finished
in a tie for ninth as he topped out
at 6-01.
The MMCRU boys distance
medley finished 19th in a time
of 3:44.52 from Gunnar Johnson,
Kaden Neddermeyer, Jace
Colling and Owen Alesch. They
were about 10 seconds behind
the winning time from Mount
Ayr.
Gehlen’s Cole McCarty
ended 10th in the 110 hurdle
prelims with a time of 15.29.
The last time to advance to the
finals was 15.22. A 1A state meet
record was broken in the prelims
of the event as Triston Miller of
Columbus crossed the finish line
in 14.12. The previous mark of
14.41 by Treynor’s Cory Woods
had stood since 1997.
MMCRU’s 4x200 team of
Xander Tentinger, Brayson
Mulder, Kaden Neddermeyer
The Gehlen boys 4x100 finished
22nd in the prelims with a
time of 45.60 from Kale Pearson,
